Collin Morikawa had a good grip on the Race to Dubai title coming into the DP World Tour Championship, regardless of his play over the weekend in Dubai. And yet, the 24-year-old American didn’t want to hear anything of it, instead focusing on winning the tournament proper, which as he said would take care of everything else.

Come Sunday at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, Morikawa did just that, posting a bogey-free six-under 66—propelled by five birdies on the back nine—to win the title in the European Tour season finale by three shots. In the process, he made history by becoming the first U.S. player ever to win the tour’s season-long points title.

To the winner goes the spoils. The RtD title comes with a $1 million bonus for Morikawa. But the tournament win was even more lucrative. The overall purse for this Rolex Series event in Dubai was $9 million with the winner claiming a $3 million prize money payout.

Below are the prize money payouts (in Euros) for each player in the field as they conclude the 2020-21 European Tour season.

Morikawa makes history as first American to win European Tour money list

C ollin Morikawa became the first American to win the European Tour’s money list after chalking up a three-stroke victory at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

A truly stunning 2021 season for the 24-year-old, which had already yielded a maiden World Golf Championships title, a second Major trophy, and a winning debut appearance in the Ryder Cup, was given a fairytale ending at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Morikawa, whose last bogey of the tournament came on the 13th hole during round two, had to be patient in the final round as he picked up only one shot on the front nine. But his round took flight from the 12th, when a birdie three kicked off an incredible run of five birdies in the final seven holes.

With the Californian piling the pressure on third round leader Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irishman suffered a horrid stroke of bad fortune at the 15th, his approach hitting the pin and rebounding into a greenside bunker, resulting in the first of three bogeys coming home for the two-time Race to Dubai Champion.

Morikawa’s exhibition round continued to delight the fans down the stretch, as the reigning Open Champion drained a lengthy birdie putt for a two at the 17th, before coming within inches of a closing eagle at the 18th hole on the Fire Course.

A tap-in birdie, however, was enough for a six-under 66 and a 17 under total, bookending a week which began with his receiving Honorary Membership of the European Tour.

Matt Fitzpatrick, last year’s The 2020 DP World Tour champion, had earlier given himself a shot at a successful title defence, but he had to be content with a share of second spot alongside Swede Alexander Björk, with respective final rounds of 66 and 70 leaving them on a 14 under total. Nicolai Højgaard and Robert MacIntyre shared fourth on 13 under par, while McIlroy finished in a share of sixth alongside Ian Poulter and Dean Burmester.

Speaking about becoming the first US player to win the Race to Dubai point lists, Morikawa said:  “It’s very special and an honour. To be the first American to do that, to put my name against so many greats is very special.   To have this chance, and close it out with a win in the DP World Tour Championship, what a great way to finish that.”

He added: “Starting off with six pars, especially with some birdie holes, wasn’t fun. I felt like I was hitting some good shots, but I wasn’t getting the breaks I needed. When I looked at the leaderboard after nine, I knew that I was still in there and I just needed one spark. And at 12, I got a great break, thinning my second shot, made the putt, and that got the momentum started and from there on in the putts somehow started dropping, and that’s always fun.”

The tournament marked the end of the European Tour, as it will become the DP World Tour from the start of the 2022 season – which begins at the Joburg Open on Thursday – and features a total prize fund in excess of  £147m across 47 events in 27 countries.

Rory McIlroy clinches DP World Tour money crown without playing

SUN CITY, South Africa -- Rory McIlroy sealed the top place in the DP World Tour rankings Sunday without hitting a shot, as none of his closest challengers can now catch him following the penultimate event of the season at Sun City.

McIlroy, with 5,164.5 points going into the DP World Tour Championship at Dubai this week, has now finished top of the European tour's money list five times, along with 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2022.

After making more than 7 million euros ($7.48 million) in prize money in nine tour events this year, McIlroy is 2,083 points ahead of second-place Jon Rahm , the Masters champion, with Adrian Meronk third.

Meronk played in this weekend's Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, where he added 94.5 points after finishing 15th.

The tournament in South Africa was won by American Max Homa , who finished 4 shots ahead of Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard .

The top 50 finishers in the Race to Dubai rankings will compete for a $10 million purse at Jumeirah Golf Estate starting Thursday.

2024 Tour Championship money: Here’s how much every player made

  • Follow on Twitter

Scottie Scheffler on Saturday at East Lake Golf Club.

Getty Images

Scottie Scheffler, the man who’s made more money than any other PGA Tour player this season, is talking about cash.

It’s a trendy topic in golf, of course, and Tuesday, ahead of this week’s Tour Championship , the Tour’s highest-paying event, Scheffler had been asked this question by a reporter:

“If the Tour came to you — you said you’ll play how the sponsors want it. If the sponsors or Strategic Sports Group came in and wanted to completely change things up and make it a match-play event or under the lights, how open do you think Tour players would be to deviating from 72-hole stroke play? Obviously not every week, but in something like if they made the playoffs and they went way outside the box?”

In response, Scheffler labeled it “a really in-depth conversation,” and the rest of his answer reflected that.

He said he hoped to be paid fairly. He said he didn’t care what he’d he get for winning the Masters .

Here’s his complete response:

“Well, it’s a really in-depth conversation,” Scheffler started. “At the end of the day in terms of sponsors, I would play a lot of the tournaments I play throughout the year if the purses were significantly less. I would pick and choose a bit more, but if it was — if it’s the Masters, I’m going to play the Masters. I want a chance to win a major championship. I do not care what you pay me for winning the Masters. I really don’t.

“But at the end of the day in terms of a lot of those tournaments, you just want to get paid what you think would be fair. And then in terms of what sponsors want, if you’ve got FedEx putting up the kind of money they’re putting up for this event, people are going to show up to play.

“It’s a business at the end of the day. It’s part of the game. This is a product that appeals to a lot of people. Sports is entertainment, but at the end of the day I still stand on the side of the fence of my golf clubs will always be my entertainment. If you want to come watch me play golf, that’s what we’re going to see. If you’re showing up, you’re going to watch me play golf. I’m not going to go out on the first tee and do dances and celebrate like crazy. I am going to do my best to compete in a golf tournament. Wherever the best players are competing, I am showing up to those tournaments because I love the competition. That’s really what I enjoy the most.

“As far as the format goes, golf is a funny game. You’re not always going to — there’s no perfect system in order to play a golf tournament that’s the most entertaining product and also the product that gets the best player each time. A lot of times in golf, the guy that plays the best may not even win that week. In terms of little bounces, it’s a fickle game. It’s a challenging sport. I’m open to suggestions. I do still think that 72 holes of stroke play is the best format for a golf tournament, but if a sponsor wants to come in and change it up a little bit, I love competing, and I want to win when we go home and play Wolf for four hours, and I’m giving 20 strokes to a guy.

“I do not want to be giving him money at the end of the day whether it’s $5 or $500. I do not want to take out my wallet and hand him money at the end of the day. That’s just not in my blood. I want to win, whether we’re playing Ping-Pong or whatever it is.

“Whatever the format, I’m going to show up and try and do my best. That’s really all it is.”

With that, here is the complete payout breakdown for this week’s Tour Championship, played at East Lake Golf Club.

Scottie Scheffler had a season for the ages.

The 28-year-old won the 2024 Tour Championship on Sunday , shooting 4-under 67 in the final round to finish at 30 under for the week, four shots in front of Collin Morikawa. The win was his seventh on the PGA Tour in 2024, the first player with seven victories in a season since Tiger Woods in 2007.

With the win, Scheffler earned $25 million in bonus money, adding to the almost $30 million he earned in official money through the regular season. In fact, everyone who played this week in the Tour Championship had a solid payday.

FedEx Cup earnings: How much each golfer in 2024 Tour Championship field has made in his career

A $25 million grand prize goes to the winner of the tour championship on sunday.

rory-mcilroy-scottie-scheffler-2024-us-open-g.jpg

The 2024 Tour Championship may not be the biggest event on the calendar, but it does boast the largest prize fund in professional golf. With the FedEx Cup Playoffs collectively shelling out $100 million in bonuses , players will vie for their slice of the nearly $83 million prize pool with $25 million going to the eventual winner at East Lake Golf Club.

Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley each collected $3.6 million for their respective victories over the first two playoff events, but that is just a fraction of what will be hitting the FedEx Cup champion's bank account once the Tour Championship concludes. In fact, all competitors will clear at least a half million dollars for making it to the season's final playoff event with those inside the top 12 all cashing seven-figure paydays and those inside the top five clearing at least $5 million.

The $83 million pool represents an increase compared to last season when $75 million was up for grabs. Viktor Hovland claimed $18 million for his FedEx Cup crown . While that is $7 million less than what the eventual winner will collect this season, it was still more than the $15 million rewarded back in 2019 -- the first year of the staggered start format.

To contextualize the $25 million winner's purse, only one player on the PGA Tour season (Scottie Scheffler, shocker !) has surpassed that money total entering the Tour Championship. The seasons put together by Robert MacIntyre, Billy Horschel, Shane Lowry and Collin Morikawa would roughly add up to this figure.

Providing even further context, CBS Sports dissects just how much $25 million would mean to each participant in the Tour Championship. Looking at golfers' career on-course earnings -- excluding past FedEx Cup winnings, as those are considered bonuses -- the prize money becomes even more obscene.

Importance of winning the Tour Championship

Looking at what winning $25 million would meant to each golfer remaining in the FedEx Cup chase.

Scheffler has been on a tear the past few seasons, climbing inside the top five in career earnings following the FedEx St. Jude Championship to now trail only Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, McIlroy and Dustin Johnson. McIlroy and Scheffler are not the only two players to rank highly on that list, though, as Justin Thomas, Schauffele and Matsuyama all stand inside the top 15 as well.

A $25 million check wouldn't be a drop in their buckets, but it is safe to say others may feel it a little more. In fact, nearly half the field would double their career earnings with a victory. Tommy Fleetwood and Lowry are among this group of 13 players and would almost exactly double their totals.

Matthieu Pavon, a DP World Tour journeyman turned PGA Tour rookie, would make the biggest splash by quintupling his earnings. Similar increases could be achieved for players like MacIntyre, 22-year-old Akshay Bhatia, Aaron Rai, Taylor Pendrith and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

Perhaps the most bizarre outcome would be if Ludvig Åberg won the FedEx Cup but didn't tally the low 72-hole score (without the starting strokes). Winless this year, the young Swede could be crowned the season-long champion without technically ever finishing first in a tournament.
