2. Banaue Rice Terraces

Often tagged as the 8th Wonder of the World, the Banaue Rice Terraces in the Ifugao Province is a breathtaking masterpiece carved and built by hand by the Ifugao people. Believed to have existed more than 2,000 years ago, it is considered the oldest and most extensive rice terrace in the world.

Seeing this wonder up close was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences we’ve had. This is one of the top Philippine tourist spots you have to see in your lifetime.

3. Hundred Islands

We’ve been to Hundred Islands in Pangasinan on two different occasions, and each visit was uniquely incredible. A Hundred Islands island hopping tour will take you to the many islands dotting the Lingayen Gulf, although only a few islands were developed for tourism.

4. Chocolate Hills

You don’t have to be a chocolate lover to appreciate the beauty of Chocolate Hills , one of the top Bohol attractions . The name came from its color that changes from grassy green to chocolate brown during the dry season.

More than a thousand hills are sprawling over a 50 sq km area in Carmen, Bohol. After seeing this geological formation right before our eyes, we can’t help but wonder how on Earth did they exist here? It is a postcard-worthy attraction you have to see for yourself.

5. Kayangan Lake

Kayangan Lake is probably the most photographed and well-loved tourist spot in Coron, and we can easily see why. With its crystal-clear brackish water (a combination of saline and freshwater), majestic karst landscapes, and rich ecosystem, it is a slice of paradise on Earth. Not to mention its reputation as the “cleanest and clearest lake” in the Philippines and the whole of Asia.

6. Hinatuan Enchanted River

Hinatuan Enchanted River in the Province of Surigao del Sur is the clearest river we’ve ever seen! We initially thought that eye-catching photos we saw online were highly edited, but we were surprised that it was really enchanting to see in real life.

Legend has it that this deep spring river is enchanted by deities who added jade and sapphire colors to the water. Urban legend aside, we absolutely enjoyed swimming in its clear waters and witnessing the fish-feeding session at 12pm.

Kawasan Falls is one of the top tourist spots in Cebu where you can have a picnic and take a dip in its ice-cold waters. You can kick your adventure up a notch by going on a thrilling canyoneering adventure .

We did it and we must say that it was indeed bucket-list worthy. We screamed our hearts out as we jumped off cliffs and splashed on natural pools. Our trail ended with a sumptuous feast in Kawasan Falls.

8. Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano in the mountains of Zambales. It is called a “beautiful disaster” because even though its tragic eruption in 1991 destroyed so many lives and livelihoods, it has now become one of the top tourist spots in the Philippines, especially for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

9. Mayon Volcano

Mayon Volcano or Mount Mayon in Albay in the Bicol region is an iconic volcano famous for its perfect cone shape. Although it is an active volcano, it is greatly considered one of the top Philippine tourist spots.

10. Paoay Sand Dunes

Paoay Sand Dunes is one of the top Ilocos Norte attractions where you can hop on a 4×4 vehicle and go sandboarding . It is also a popular filming location for several films like Panday, Himala, Born on the Fourth of July, and Mad Max.

When we made our way here, we immediately felt like we were in a desert in the Middle East. It’s a rare sight you won’t normally encounter in our country so we cannot not include it in our list of top Philippine tourist spots.

11. Cloud 9, Siargao Island

If you love surfing, there’s no other place to go than Siargao, the surfing capital of the Philippines. One particular Siargao attraction that draws many travelers and surfing enthusiasts from around the world is Cloud 9 . It is touted as the best surf break in the country with its classic right-hand waves breaking over a reef.

We’ve been to many beach destinations in the Philippines but there’s nothing quite like El Nido in Palawan. The beaches and lagoons here are truly unparalleled. You have to join island hopping tours categorized as Tour A , Tour B , Tour C , Tour D , to reach specific islands where you can dive, swim, snorkel, kayak, or frolic at the beach.

The top El Nido attractions include the Small Lagoon, Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Secret Beach, Paradise Beach, Hidden Beach, 7 Commando Beach, Nacpan Beach, Shimizu Island, and Snake Island. 13. Boracay Island

Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan is consistently included in the list of the world’s best islands and one of the famous Philippine tourist spots. We aren’t even surprised. With its long stretch of white sand beaches, clear waters, and sunny vibe, you can easily fall in love with this tropical paradise.

It’s an all-in-one destination for all types of travelers. As foodies, our taste buds were pleased with the range of food choices here. Of course, we had to try the famous calamansi muffin and Jonah’s fruit shake.

Adventure-seekers will also enjoy water sports activities like parasailing , paraw sailing , jet skiing , and helmet diving . As Cebuano locals, we always regard Bantayan Island as a world-class beach destination that can rival Boracay. The four-hour road trip up north is definitely worth it, and we would always recommend it to friends who visit Cebu.

Bantayan Island features white sand beaches like Kota Beach and Sandira Beach and other unique natural attractions such as caves and mangroves. 15. Alona Beach, Panglao, Bohol

We can say that Alona Beach in Bohol’s Panglao Island is a smaller, less crowded version of Boracay Island. It’s our go-to beach destination outside of Cebu as it is just a two-hour ferry ride away. 16. Pink Beach, Santa Cruz Island, Zamboanga City

The Pink Beach of the Great Santa Cruz Island in Zamboanga City continues to be on our travel bucket list. We haven’t been there but some of our friends and relatives who are locals of Zamboanga City and Basilan recommend visiting so we can see its beauty ourselves.

We can’t wait to actually dip our toes in the pink coralline sand and swim in its crystal-clear waters. We’ll brush up on our Chavacano language , too, before going there.

17. calle crisologo, vigan city.

Calle Crisologo is one of the top Vigan City tourist spots . In fact, it is almost always the starting point of every Vigan City tour . Strolling around the area felt like we were living in the Spanish colonial era with its cobblestone street, ancestral homes, and old shophouses.

18. Intramuros, Manila

Another place that transports you back to the Spanish colonial times is Intramuros in Manila. Intramuros literally means “inside the walls” in Latin, hence the name “Walled City of Manila”, which defended the city from invaders in the late 16th century. Today, it houses the Fort San Santiago and Jose Rizal shrine.

We learned so much about Philippine history just by exploring Intramuros and entering the museum dedicated to Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero.

To make your trip even more magical, ride a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) for ₱350-500 per 30 minutes. And maybe practice your Filipino language before you go.

19. Magellan’s Cross, Cebu

Magellan’s Cross is one of the top historical attractions in Cebu where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his troops planted the cross to signify the birth of Christianity in Cebu. Look up and you’ll see ceiling murals depicting the baptism ceremony.

20. Rizal Park and Shrine, Dapitan City

Aside from Rizal Park (Luneta) and Rizal Museum in Intramuros, another historical place to learn more about our national hero is Rizal Park and Shrine in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte. This 16-hectare protected landscape was where Jose Rizal was exiled for four years.

The native casas (houses) originally built by Rizal that served as his residence, clinic, and other quarters were reconstructed and preserved. When we came here, we were so amazed at how Rizal lived a meaningful life full of talent, passion, and love for the country. This is really a great place to relive the life of our national hero and get inspired by him.

Also within the gorgeous province of Palawan is the municipality of Coron . With crystal clear waters perfect for snorkelling, powdery white sandy beaches and innumerable picture-perfect landscapes, Coron is a beach bum’s dream. As in El Nido, travellers can charter a small boat or join organized tour groups for day trips around the many islands and lagoons here. Architectural Landmark, Historical Landmark

Intramuros, nestled within today’s restless Metro Manila, is a walled area that played an important role in the country’s history. The heart of old Manila , the area packs a lot into its 0.5sqkm (50ha) size and with cobblestone streets, preserved ruins and colonial architecture, Intramuros is a must-see for visitors to the capital. Visitors can go on walking tours to learn about Intramuros and the country’s history and take kalesa (horse-drawn calash) rides around the historic zone.

Gaining more and more popularity in recent years is the country’s surf capital of Siargao . Strategically located on the east coast, Siargao receives strong winds and currents that flow in steadily from the Pacific Ocean. To the delight of surfers, this gives the island solid swells they can enjoy, including the famous Cloud 9 .

Mount Mayon

One natural wonder that locals are truly proud of, Mount Mayon sits in the Filipino province of Albay. Mayon is an active volcano (the most active in the country) that is famous for its seemingly perfect symmetry. Standing at nearly 2,500m (8,200ft), its flawless conical shape captivates anyone who sets eyes on it. This deep spring river in the province of Surigao del Sur takes its name from the mystical qualities locals believe surround the body of water. With its enchanting shades of deep blues and greens, the river is believed by locals to be guarded by fairies and other spirits known as engkanto . Contributing to its mystical nature is the unexplained source of its clear saltwater.

Batanes offers an escape like nowhere else in the country. Perched at the northernmost tip of the Philippines, Batanes is surrounded by picturesque landscapes of rolling hills, big sky and azure seas. A tranquil, slowed-down vibe permeates life here, with locals known for their pleasant and amiable nature. They are also proud of their province’s virtually non-existent crime rate.

The Most Beautiful Islands in the Philippines

Perhaps the second most popular Philippine island next to Palawan is the island of Boracay . Known for its powdery white sand, spectacular sunsets and vibrant nightlife, Boracay has long been a tourist hotspot Filipinos like to brag about, but the island was shut in 2018 due to a large-scale sewage problem, which dramatically affected tourism. With a long list of activities and watersports available, visitors will never run out of things to do on the island.

Kalanggaman Island

While the luxurious island of Pamalican may sound divine, a trip here does end with quite the hefty bill. For those seeking out a tropical escape with a more feasible price tag, the country has a remarkable lineup of undeveloped virgin islands, too. One of these is Kalanggaman in Leyte. While the island itself isn’t all that large, two dazzling sandbars extend into the sea on either side. There are no hotels on the island, nor is there electricity – two enticing features to campers. There are basic facilities however, such as toilets and cottages for rent, so choosing to spend the night wouldn’t be too rough. Kalanggaman might not be the easiest to get to but its picturesque sandbar alone makes it a must for anyone travelling around the Visayas.

Malapascua Island

Like Apo, the island of Malapascua, north of mainland Cebu , is also famous for its excellent dive sites. As Apo boasts regular turtle sightings, Malapascua boasts that of majestic manta rays and thresher sharks. And while this island’s allure extends far beyond its coast, its beaches don’t make coming back to shore seem too bad either. Peaceful beaches like Guimbitayan and Langob are inviting havens after long days out at sea.

Malcapuya Island

With El Nido and Coron crowning the island province, northern Palawan is any beach lover’s utopia . Another of its islands worth a trip is Malcapuya, sitting between the municipalities of Coron and Culion. As you approach, it won’t seem like much but, as you’ll quickly find out, it’s only because you’ll be docking at its backside. This gives its exquisite powdery white sand beach unobstructed views and keeps its shores swimmer-friendly and free of boats. Not only does this island have an immaculate, virgin beach, but its clear waters are also great for snorkelling. Interesting rock formations adorn one end, while the other has a viewing point from which to revel in all its natural beauty.

Camiguin Island

The island province of Camiguin is another one of the country’s more underrated tourist destinations. While nearby White Island and Mantigue Island are great spots, mainland Camiguin is not to be overlooked. Majestic waterfalls, hot and cold springs, volcanoes and the famous sunken cemetery – this island presents a long list of sights and activities to fill out an exciting itinerary. And while travellers would come in more moderate numbers in the past, the province is currently working on expanding and promoting their tourism industry, so an influx of visitors is expected in the near future.

Siquijor Island

Just east of Camiguin is the mystical island of Siquijor. Despite being wrapped in folklore and tales of witchcraft, this island is much more than its age-old legends. White sand beaches and marine sanctuaries with splendid diving spots abound but the star of the island is Cambugahay Falls, a series of gently cascading waterfalls that form a number of enchanting turquoise pools. Surrounded by lush green rainforest and dotted with wooden rafts, it looks like it could have been designed for a luxury waterpark – we’re talking honeymoon-photos gorgeous. Of course, Cambugahay Falls is popular, so for a quieter and more rugged waterfall to wallow in, try Lugnason Falls which is usually much less crowded.

Palaui Island

The famous TV franchise Survivor set four seasons of the show in the Philippines. The first two were filmed in Caramoan, with the other two in remote Palaui. Located in the north of the country, off the coast of Luzon , Palaui is an adventurer’s playground. Because of distance, it isn’t frequented by most travellers, which also keeps the island’s rustic character intact. In and around lush terrain are beaches, mangrove forests, hiking trails and waterfalls to explore. The island also houses a historic lighthouse from the Spanish occupation which is now considered a national cultural treasure. Its lone residential village of Punta Verde serves as a camping ground for visitors who wish to rough it out and stay a while.

Strictly speaking, Calaguas is a group of islands, east of Manila in the province of Camarines Norte. While a handful of islands make up the area, Tinaga is the best known and most frequented for its pristine 3km (2mi) stretch called Mahabang Buhangin. Not nearly as distinguished as Boracay or Palawan , the islands of Calaguas remain unadulterated. Fancy accommodations are also not an option in Mahabang Buhangin, so it has become a popular camping ground for the adventurous islander. Surrounding rolling terrain and hiking trails also present a more active alternative to lying on the beach.

Matukad Island

Once hidden jewels, the islands around the Caramoan peninsula in Camarines Sur were brought into the limelight after being featured on several seasons of the long-running reality competition, Survivor. The show’s typical setting is remote and isolated, a look very much had by the Caramoan islands. One of these islands is Matukad, which boasts a gorgeous fine-sand beach, lush forest backdrop and hidden lagoon. The lagoon is obscured by a tall limestone cliff, that, when climbed, presents a superb view of the natural pool below. The waters are calm and clear, perfect for swimming, but pack some courage for the climb as the rock wall is steep and jagged, which many contend is also worth the view.

Lahos Island

Another impressive Caramoan island is Lahos. A striking image, the island is characterized by two major rock formations opposite each other, allowing a small beach to stretch between them, creating shorelines on either end of the island. This untainted piece of paradise makes for a great place to simply lay back and bask in its raw beauty. It also goes without saying that Lahos is a perfect location for stunning new photos to add to your social media feeds.

White Island

This bare island just off the coast of Camiguin’s capital is a favourite for more than just its accessibility. More a sandbar than an island, it is free of any trees or structures, save for a meagre shack that sells snacks and rents out umbrellas. What surrounds it, however, are exquisite views of the horizon and Mt Hibok-Hibok on the province’s main island. Because there is not much shade, it’s best to come early in the morning or late into the afternoon to avoid the day’s scorching hours. Try to chance upon either sunrise or sunset for an even more remarkable scene.

Apo is a unique one on the list because perhaps even more famous than the island itself are its surrounding waters. A protected marine reserve, the waters around Apo Island hold magnificent coral gardens and bustling marine life. Turtle sightings are especially commonplace even close to shore, making it an exciting site for both snorkelling and diving. There are also accommodation options on the island for those who want more time exploring its marine reserve than a day trip allows.

Mantigue Island

Mantigue Island, also known as Magsaysay Island, sits just off the eastern coast of Camiguin. It’s usually much less crowded than the accessible White Island and offers more activity than the picturesque bare sandbar. More than just a beautiful beach, the island is rich in vegetation and even has a little forest trail for visitors to explore. It is also known for its marine sanctuary, a fantastic spot to do some diving or snorkelling.

Sabtang Island

Journey an hour southwest of Batan and you reach the island of Sabtang. Here, Batanes showcases even more masterpieces of nature, like the Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint and Nakabuang stone arch on Morong Beach. But an impressive man-made treasure that also renders this island worth a visit is the traditional Ivatan house, built to withstand the tempestuous weather the province sees, due to its geographic location. Made of limestone and coral walls and thatched cogon grass roofs, these sturdy houses line the local villages of Savidug and Chavayan, which are wonders to stroll through.

Cresta de Gallo Island

Near the centre of the Philippine archipelago is a small untouched paradise that still flies below the tourist radar, leaving it in its pure, spotless state. It also helps that it isn’t the easiest to get to and that there is virtually nothing on the island except for whatever nature bestowed. Anyone who decides to make the trip must have all necessities in tow, from water and food to camping gear. But for the trouble, they’ll also very likely have this precious island all to themselves.

Islas de Gigantes

And finally, rounding off this list are a group of lesser known islands in the province of Iloilo. Collectively known as Islas de Gigantes, some 10 islands sit unspoilt and uncrowded at the country’s centre. A basic tour around the islands makes stops at Cabugao Gamay, a picture-perfect islet with a vegetated rock hill at one end and a prime viewing point over Bantigue Island, Bakwitan Cave and Antonia Beach at the other. Seafood , especially scallops, are also abundant, so seafood lovers can feast to their heart’s content. This is one for your list of places to hurry to before it’s reached by commercial development.

The Most Beautiful Towns in The Philippines

A Unesco World Heritage Site , Vigan is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. Calle Crisologo, the town’s historic center, is closed to vehicular traffic. This beautifully-preserved cobbled street is lined with colonial-era merchant houses and Baroque churches. Horse-drawn carriages, called kalesa, add to the beguiling atmosphere. Most of these elegant buildings are private homes, but a few have been converted into B&Bs and museums, allowing visitors the opportunity to see their equally-stunning interiors. Established in the 16th-century, the town’s unique architecture brings together elements of local, Chinese, and European architecture. It’s considered to be Asia’s finest example of a planned Spanish colonial town.

Baclayon was the first municipality to be founded on the island of Bohol, established by the Spanish in the late 16th century. This charming town’s main attraction is Baclayaon Church, which is a National Cultural Treasure as well as a National Historical Landmark. Although this historic church was severely damaged during an earthquake in 2013, its adjacent museum remains open to explore. Aside from the church, the town is home to dozens of lovely colonial Spanish homes, dating back as far as 1853. Baclayon is an ideal base for whale-and dolphin-watching excursions to nearby Pamilacan Island.

Known as the ‘Philippine Shangri-La’, Sagada is a stunning town set 5,300 feet above sea level in north-central Philippines. The town’s landscape of caves, hiking trails, sculpted rice terraces, and lush karst mountains looks particularly stunning shrouded in the mists often present at its high altitude. According to traditional local culture, the spirits of the dead like to be close to the sky, and as a result, ancient coffins can be seen interspersed along the limestone cliffs. Established by Episcopal missionaries in the early 20th century, the town’s cooler climate is ideal for growing a variety of fruits that are challenging to grow elsewhere in the country, including lemons.

Although Silay doesn’t initially look as lovely as the nearby provincial capital of Bacolod, it’s a city that quickly draws in those who linger long enough to discover its rich history. Once known as ‘the Paris of Negros’, Silay was at the heart of the island’s thriving sugar industry in the 19th century. During the industry’s Golden Age, the town was dotted with grand sugar mansions. A number of these historic mansions survive today, and some have been converted into interesting museums. The town is particularly wonderful to visit during the Charter-Day anniversary, which takes place each June. This colorful annual event features an exciting street dance competition.

Daraga is a quaint market town located in southeast Luzon. This rural town sits in the shadow of Mount Mayon, with Daraga Church perched dramatically on a hill overlooking the volcano. Constructed in 1773, the church was built using volcanic rock and features some intricately sculpted reliefs on its columns. Just northwest of town is Cagsawa Church, one of the region’s most iconic sites. In the early 19th century hundreds of people sought refuge in the church during a devastating eruption of Mount Mayon, but were killed when lava engulfed the building. The remains of the church look quite haunting against the backdrop of green fields and towering Mount Mayon.

Nicknamed the ‘Summer Capital of the Philippines’, Baguio was originally designed as a vacation destination for Americans in the early 20th century. Set 5,200 feet above sea level, Baguio’s climate is distinctly cooler than most other areas of the country, making it a favorite getaway spot of both tourists and locals. Dotted with pretty parks, pine trees, and heritage buildings, the town is a pleasant place for horseback riding and hiking. It’s also an excellent shopping destination, with dozens of thrift shops (called ukay-ukay) found along Session Road, as well as handcrafted goodies available at the downtown market.

Alaminos is home to the Hundred Islands, a group of 123 islands located off its coast. Each of the islands is distinct, with many known for their unusual mushroom-like appearance caused by tides eroding their bases over the years. Island hopping boat trips are a popular activity, with some islands home to pretty beaches, caves, and interesting bird-life. In addition to touring the islands, many visitors stop to hike the islands’ often-hilly terrain or camp overnight. Alaminos itself features a number of elegant heritage homes, and it is well-known for a special type of longganisa made with a flavorful type of local garlic.

With its cobblestone houses, craggy seaside cliffs and rolling hills, Basco looks more like part of the European countryside than the capital of the Philippine’s municipality of Batanes. Pretty Basco Lighthouse is located about 0.7 miles north of the town, and offers fantastic views over the coast. Basco is an excellent base for exploring the Batanes Islands, or you can simply stroll through its charming flower-filled streets. Basco is also a good starting point for hikes to the top of nearby Mount Iraya, a 4,977-foot dormant volcano which can be reached in a three-hour trek from the town.

The Philippines is an island nation located in the Western Pacific. The region boasts one of the world’s longest combined coastlines due to the nation’s seven thousand tropical islands. These islands have beautiful coral reefs and spectacular diving, wildlife like whale sharks and dugongs, and mountainous tropical rainforests.

Filipino people are smiling, warm, and generous. Flights can be found to Manila or Cebu, and interisland travel is easy to find via plane, car, train, or ferry. Here is a look at some of the best places to visit in the Philippines :

10. Vigan [SEE MAP]

A visit to the Crisologo St region of this town is like a step back to colonial times. Horses pull carts along cobblestone streets, and dark-wood mansions flank the sides, as a reminder of the grand life that many enjoyed in this colonial Spanish trading post. At the time, many goods like beeswax and gold were traded to China for exotic Asian items.

Today, the main income for this port is tourism, though the splendor from its trading history remains. Vigan has two hearts, a shopping center in the North, and a business district in the South. Tourists will enjoy the museums that have been created from several mansions, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Mestizo district.

The huge orange eyes and tiny fingers of the miniscule tarsier serve as the spokesmodel for the island of Bohol. Just a short trip from Cebu, this area is one of the few remaining homes for this tiny primate. The unique geologic oddity of the chocolate hills serves as the second draw for the non-divers to the region.

The mogul-like hills come with a legend of being formed by the rocks thrown by an angry giant. Most of the visitors to this region are, however, here to partake in the breathtaking dive opportunities that the region has to offer. It is the jumping off point for the marine reserves off of Pangalo and Pamlican islands.

This Asian megacity is the capital of the Philippines, the fly-in point for most tourists, and a bustling opportunity to appreciate bounds of culture new and old. From tall gleaming buildings on the skyscraper gazing tour to the turn-of-the century landmarks on the self-guided downtown tour, there is much to see in Manila.

Food, whether from a street cart or high cuisine restaurant, is excellent and diverse, representing much more than the blend of Spanish, indigenous, and Chinese heritages that have found their way to this island nation. There is never a bad time to go to Manila, as there are almost two-dozen annual festivals to keep the city celebrating.

7. Donsol [SEE MAP]

Located in the province of Sorsogon, a place of pristine beaches, stunning waterfalls and unexplored caves, the sleepy fishing village of Donsol is the place in the Philippines to see whale sharks. They like tropical waters, which makes Donsol Bay a great habitat for them.

The protected species migrates through Donsol between November and June, with the numbers peaking between February and May. This huge fish is not shy about approaching boats; indeed, some carry scars from encounters with propellers.

6. Tagaytay [SEE MAP]

The Taal volcano that sits majestically above the town of Tagaytay is a combination of active and extinct craters that create a beautiful tapestry of must-sees. Lake Taal is nestled inside the old Taal volcano crater, and the central island for the lake is the currently active volcano craters, which can be seen steaming on certain days.

Those who have never seen the pristine waters of a crater lake in person will be astonished at their pristine beauty. The long town of Tagaytay sits along this ridge, and is known for being clean, laid back, and a haven for foodies. Tourist attractions in town include the Punta de Santiago lighthouse, St Anne Shrine, and the large local flower farm.

5. Cebu [SEE MAP]

Cebu is an island province in the Philippines, consisting of the main island itself and 167 surrounding islands. Its capital, Cebu city, is the oldest in the Philippines, and home to the nation’s second international airport.

The city is a smaller but similarly busy version of Manila, with many of the same urban benefits of new, old, cutting edge and cultural. One advantage that Cebu has is Matcan island, featuring a premiere dive site that is a short drive from an international airport. Another diving gem, the island and resorts of Malapascua, is about a four hour drive to the port town of Maya, and then must be accessed by boat. It is well worth the trip, however, as it is often considered the number one dive site in the country.

4. Mindoro [SEE MAP]

Mindoro is an island that consists of two different regions, Mindoro Oriental and Mindoro Occidental, which are separated from one another by a high mountain range. The north of the region is mostly remote, and home to the primitive Mangayan tribe. This trip is well worth it for divers, however, as the town of Sablayan is the doorway to the island of Pangan and the pristine Apo Reef Marine Natural Park.

There is only one resort on the island, so reservations are recommended. In Mindoro Oriental, the main tourism location is the town of Puerto Galera. This is the ideal beach town, with resorts and white sand beaches for the water lovers, as well as jeep trips, orchid-filled rainforests, kayaking rivers and waterfalls for the trekkers in the group.

3. Banuae [SEE MAP]

The mud-walled rice terraces in Banuae are reason enough to take the bus trip from Manila to this unique indigenous town. The agricultural engineering system represented here was built 2000 years ago and passed on from generation to generation.

Though the serene and impressive flats would be enough to make this a must-see, the spectacular wood-carved rice guardians make the trip even more worthwhile. The ancient, crude sculptures are reminiscent of tikis, and believed to protect the crops from harm.

Though tourism has brought the Western world to an ancient way of life and created a large tourist market here, there are opportunities to visit less touristy towns whose rice crops are still the main staple of their economy for those seeking a more authentic experience.

2. Boracay [SEE MAP]

Endless white sand beaches, colorful outrigger sailboat rides, and beautiful resorts grace this island that has been consistently in the top three beaches in the world by travel review sites. The most populous region of Boracay is the central part of White Beach, which has the most opportunities for food, adventure, shopping, and public merriment.

Moving further away, more remote options are available, but they come with reduced amenities. Lodging ranges from budget shacks to high-end full-service resorts, but the white sand beaches, turquoise water, and romantic ambiance are open to all.

One of the best places to visit in the Philippines, Palawan is an island province that stretches from Mindoro to Borneo between the South China and Sulu seas. Puerto Princesa, which is close to large karst formations with an underground river, is the provincial capital.

Coron Reefs on Busuanga Island is a popular diving spot, drawing divers who want to explore Japanese shipwrecks from World War II. Another popular destination is El Nido, a town sandwiched between towering limestone karst cliffs and the beautiful Bacuit Bay.

Interesting list. I know someone who just spent 6 months in the Philippines (Cebu), and she loved it so much that she’s returning very soon to live there. I’ve got to admit, it has kind of intrigued me to go there as well.

25 HISTORICAL PLACES IN THE PHILIPPINES in Araling Panlipunan / HEKASI Books

The very first travel flame in my young mind was sparked by textbooks. My first intense desire to go places was lit by HEKASI — Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika (Geography, History and Civics), which is now called Araling Panlipunan . In grade school, I was so fascinated by the photos of historic places. I’ve marveled about the lives of prominent personalities and notable events that shaped history.

Now that I’m a travel blogger, there’s always a sense of fulfillment whenever I set foot in a place that was featured in my elementary history books. Though it may sound privileged, travel is a great history teacher, and it reignites the lessons about the past that we learned when we were kids and those we need to relearn today.

If you are a history buff and looking for places in the Philippines to cross off your travel bucket list, here’s a list featuring some of the monumental sites in the country.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Intramuros, Manila

Considered the political, educational, and religious center of the Spanish Empire in the Philippines and the historic core of Manila, Intramuros used to be an opulent walled city, strategically located along the Manila Bay. It was the seat of Spanish rule from the late 16th century to the 19th century. The walls were constructed between 1590 and 1872, encompassing what was then the entire city of Manila.

Up to this day, it houses many significant landmarks like the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Casa Manila, Baluarte de San Diego, and Fort Santiago, where the national hero Jose Rizal was incarcerated.

The original campuses of the University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila used to be within the fortified city until the first half of the 20th century. There are still well-preserved structures like the cobblestone streets, parts of walls, and other buildings.

2. Rizal Park, Manila

Situated on the southern border of Intramuros, Rizal Park is a 58-hectare historic urban park, one of the largest in Asia.

Its history dates back to 1820 when Paseo de Luneta was built on the former location of Bagumbayan . During the Spanish rule, especially in the 19th century, the park was the site of numerous public executions, the most notable were that of Rizal and the GomBurZa (Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora) priests. Other historic events held here were the declaration of Philippine independence from the United States in 1946 and the 1986 EDSA Revolution.

The most outstanding landmark of the park is the Rizal Monument , where his remains lie and marked by a statue made of bronze and granite. Declared a national park in 1955 as Luneta National Park , it was then renamed Rizal Park in 1967 in honor of the country’s national hero.

Other points of interest within the park are the National Museum Complex (National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of Anthropology, National Planetarium), Independence Flagpole, Musical and Dancing Fountain, Botanical Garden, Quirino Grandstand, and San Lorenzo Ruiz Plaza.

3. Binondo, Manila

Driving further north of Intramuros, across the Pasig River through Jones Bridge, the huge and intricate New Binondo Chinatown Arch greets and bids commuters and city dwellers.

Established in 1594, Binondo is the first and the oldest Chinatown in the world. That alone makes this a worthy historical destination. The location just outside Intramuros was strategic in the sense that the Chinese Catholic immigrants could still continue trading while being monitored by the Spanish government in the 16th century. Up to this day, the area is a hubbub of trade and commerce, mostly run by Filipino-Chinese residents.

One of the main draws of Binondo is its colorful and delicious food scene. There are so many gastronomic gems scattered around this extensive food hub, most of which cannot be found anywhere else but in Binondo. Other famous products have branched out, but local tourists still visit the origin of their favorite Binondo grubs.

Other places of interest are Ongpin Street, Escolta Street, Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz, and Binondo Church.

4. Rizal Shrine, Calamba, Laguna

Declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as a national shrine, the structure stands on the same location of the Rizal family’s ancestral house.

It is a reconstructed version of the original two-story Spanish-era bahay na bato . Using similar materials like hardwood, adobe stones, bricks, and capiz shells among others, the reconstruction began in 1949, as ordered by then-President Quirino, and was launched to the public on the 19th of June 1950, in time for the 89th birthday celebration of Rizal. The only deviation from the original exterior appearance is the walls painted in green instead of the original white.

As the birthplace of Rizal, it features collections and memorabilia that center around his childhood. The shrine also cradles the remains of Jose Rizal’s parents. The property also houses a library, a gallery, an audio-visual room, and a souvenir shop. Other landmarks near the shrine are St. John the Baptist Parish Church and the City College of Calamba.

5. Banaue Rice Terraces, Ifugao

Built by the ancestors of the indigenous people of Ifugao centuries ago, the Banaue Rice Terraces was declared by the government as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973.

These terraces embody the culture of the Ifugao people, which was largely influenced by rice cultivation and agriculture. The importance of these terraces is evident in the many agricultural rites connected to rice production. The traditional and indigenous techniques applied in building the terraces reveal the extensive knowledge of the Ifugao people in earthwork, stonework, irrigation, and the preservation of the integrity of the rice terraces.

Interestingly, the Banaue Rice Terraces is not included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras due to the presence of modern structures in the area. However, two of the five listed are located not too far away — the Batad Rice Terraces and the Bangaan Rice Terraces. The Banaue Rice Terraces are the ones that can be seen from different view decks along the main road (Nueva Vizcaya-Ifugao-Mountain Province Road).

6. Tabon Cave Complex, Palawan

Situated on Lipuun Point in the town of Quezon on the southwestern part of Palawan Island, the cave complex is part of the Lipuun Point Reservation , protecting and preserving the cultural and historical artifacts within the area.

Cradling numerous important archeological artifacts like the Tabon Man , the oldest modern human bones in the Philippines; and the Manunggul Jar , a National Cultural Treasure and one of over a thousand burial jars discovered in the cave complex.

Designated as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum in 2011, the complex is said to have 215 caves, but only seven of these are accessible to the public including Tabon, Igang, and Liyang among others.

7. Mactan Shrine, Cebu

Located along Punta Engaño Road on the northern part of Mactan Island in Cebu, the Mactan Shrine encompasses two monuments: the Lapu-Lapu Shrine on one end and the Magellan Marker (also Magellan Monument) on the other.

The site faces the Magellan Bay, a reminder of the Battle of Mactan, which took place in April 1521 between the Spanish troops led by Portuguese explorer Magellan and the Mactan natives led by Lapu-Lapu. The battle led to the defeat of the Spaniards, causing them to retreat.

If you get hungry while exploring the shrine, try the traditional Visayan sutukil from the nearby Sutukil Seafood Market Restaurant Chain.

8. Magellan’s Cross, Cebu City

Located adjacent to Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in the heart of Cebu City, the Magellan’s Cross is one of the most visited historical landmarks in Cebu.

The site is said to be the exact location where Portuguese Magellan planted the cross upon his arrival in Cebu in March 1521. As stated on the marker at the bottom of the cross, the original artifact is encased inside the wooden Tindalo cross. The painted ceiling illustrates this historic event.

9. Sandugo Shrine, Bohol

In March 1565, a blood compact between Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and Bohol chieftain Sikatuna took place as a symbol of friendship between the Spaniards and the Filipinos. This was famously called the sandugo , a tribal tradition sealing allegiance and confirming solidarity between tribes. Both representatives cut their arms and pour their blood into a cup, divide the mixture equally, and drink them until both cups are emptied.

The moment is immortalized by the Sandugo Shrine (Blood Compact Shrine) in Tagbilaran City. But the truth is, this monument does not mark the actual spot where the historic treaty was made. In 2006, the government of Bohol determined the actual site where it happened to be in Loay, the municipality between Alburquerque and Loboc.

The actual site, now called Blood Compact Marker , is situated along Bohol Circumferential Road/Tagbilaran East Road.

10. Barasoain Church, Malolos, Bulacan

“Baras ng Suwail”

The dungeon of the defiant. The 19th-century Barasoain Church witnessed many monumental events in the history of the Philippines. It served as the headquarters of the illustrados who were against the Spanish rule and was the site of one of the most pivotal events in Philippine democracy — the Malolos Congress , also known as the First Philippine Congress.

The Malolos Congress was formed in June 1898 by Emilio Aguinaldo in defiance of the Spanish regime. Although this one was short-lived, this was a testament to the Filipinos’ passion for democracy.

This Baroque church is made of adobe and concrete materials and is centrally located in Malolos.

11. Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite

Declared a National Shrine in June 1964, the Aguinaldo Shrine encompasses the whole ancestral house and grounds of Emilio Aguinaldo and extends to the park across the main house.

This was the site of the proclamation of Philippine Independence from Spain on June 12, 1898 with the unfurling of the Philippine flag. This was also the event where the instrumental music of the Philippine national anthem was first heard. Every year, a flag-raising ceremony is held during the Independence Day celebration.

Completed in 1845, the mansion has undergone renovations in 1849 and 1919. It was donated to the government by Aguinaldo himself and is currently being managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. The lush garden behind the mansion nestles the final resting place of Aguinaldo. The main house functions as a museum now.

12. Leyte Landing Memorial Park

“I shall return.”

Proclaimed a national park in July 1977, the MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park (also called MacArthur Park) was also designated as a national historic landmark by the National Historical Commission in 1994.

This park was established in celebration of a significant event in history, the A-Day Landing in October 1944, where Douglas MacArthur, together with his entourage, finally fulfilled his promise to come back and help the Philippines gain back its independence from the Japanese. A few days later, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle of World War II erupted.

The memorial national park features a shallow manmade pool with seven bronze statues representing General Douglas MacArthur, President Sergio Osmeña Jr., Brigadier General Carlos P. Romulo, Major General Courtney Whitney, Lieutenant General Richard Sutherland, Sergeant Francisco Salveron, and William J. Dunn. The memorial park faces the San Pablo Bay/Leyte Gulf.

13. Dambana ng Kagitingan, Bataan

Established in 1970, the Dambana ng Kagitingan , also known as the Mount Samat National Shrine or Shrine of Valor, is a memorial complex honoring the fallen Filipino and American soldiers who fought against the Japanese in the Battle of Bataan in 1942.

Mount Samat was the last bastion of freedom where many lost their lives fighting for independence against the Imperial Japanese Army. It was declared as a National Shrine in April 1966.

The complex also harbors the Colonnade , stretching wide and welcoming visitors from the parking lot. The Colonnade houses a war museum. The most dominant feature is the colossal white Memorial Cross with the Cross’s arms serving as a viewing gallery. Further behind the Colonnade are paths leading to the base of the cross. The whole complex offers a panoramic view of Bataan and Corregidor Island.

14. Bataan Death March Markers

Three months after the Battle of Bataan , the Japanese army decided to transfer about 75,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war from Bataan to Camp O’Donnel (now Capas National Shrine) in Capas, Tarlac. This was called the Bataan Death March because this long, brutal walk claimed the lives of thousands of Filipino soldiers and hundreds of American soldiers.

Each kilometer is marked by a modest white obelisk stand with illustrated Death March sign and plaques. There are a total of 138 Death March Markers — 97 in Bataan, 33 in Pampanga, and 8 in Tarlac — dotting the roads between Bataan and Tarlac with the one in Mariveles, marking the Kilometer 0.

These markers are managed by the Filipino-American Memorial Endowment (FAME), a non-stock and non-profit foundation. They are also raising funds for the continuous maintenance of these historical markers.

15. Corregidor Island

Strategically situated at the mouth of Manila Bay and facing the West Philippine Sea, Corregidor Island played an important role as a military base during World War II. Nicknamed “The Rock”, this fortified island was part of the harbor defenses, protecting Manila Bay from enemy attacks. The island suffered massive destructions after the war.

Most people assume that Corregidor is a part of Bataan because of its close physical proximity and historical ties, but it is in fact under the jurisdiction of Cavite City.

Today, the whole island and its ruins remind visitors of the past and serve as war memorials. Here are some of the significant historical sites on the island: Pacific War Memorial, Malinta Tunnel, Filipino Heroes Memorial, Corregidor Lighthouse, Japanese Garden of Peace, and Mile-Long Barracks. 16. Rizal Park and Shrine Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte

The four-year exile of Jose Rizal in Dapitan was one of the most eventful periods of his life. Rizal’s work and activities were deemed subversive by the Spanish regime, prompting them to send the Laguna-native to Mindanao for exile.

The places where he lived and worked are preserved as part of the José Rizal Memorial Protected Landscape, also called Rizal Park and Shrine. Aside from this, Dapitan’s map is dotted with several historic landmarks including Liwasan ng Dapitan, Punto del Desembarco de Rizal, Casa Real, Cotta de Dapitan, and St. James the Greater Church. Dapitan is nicknamed the Shrine City in the Philippines.

17. Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte

The island is historically significant because it said that it is where the first-ever mass in the Philippines was held in March 1521 by Father Pedro de Valderrama.

Located off the southern tip of Southern Leyte, the municipality of Limasawa used to be under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Padre Burgos until 1978. With six barangays on the island, Limasawa officially became a separate town in 1989 through a plebiscite.

18. University of Santo Tomas, Manila

Originally named Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, the University of Santo Tomas dates back to the early 17th century when it was founded by the third archbishop of Manila Miguel de Benavides in April 1611. The name was changed to Colegio de Santo Tomas and eventually elevated to university status in November 1645.

Over four centuries later, the university stood the test of time and is regarded as the oldest university in the Philippines and in Asia. It was originally located inside Intramuros, the walled city of Manila during the Spanish colonial period, before transferring to its current location.

Prominent alumni are Jose Rizal, Apolinario Mabini, Jose P. Laurel, Diosdado Macapagal, Sergio Osmeña, Manuel L. Quezon, and Nick Joaquin among others.

19. Cagsawa Ruins, Albay

Remember the iconic photo of a church’s tower (or what’s left of it) buried in volcanic ash with the temperamental but picturesque Mayon Volcano in the background?

The late 16th-century Cagsawa Church was established by the Franciscan missionaries. The first structure was burned down by the Dutch pirates in the 17th century. It was reconstructed in the 18th century. However, the eruption of the Mayon Volcano destroyed the church along with the rest of the town in the early 19th century. What we see today is what was left of the church — a portion of its tower.

The Cagsawa Ruins Park is co-managed and co-maintained by the municipal government of Daraga and the National Museum of the Philippines. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Albay. While there, visit the Cagsawa National Museum , showcasing photos of the Mayon eruptions and other related collections. And since it’s a popular attraction, there are several souvenir shops and stalls in the vicinity.

20. Calle Crisologo, Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Named after a well-loved Ilocano politician and writer Mena Crisologo, Calle Crisologo is a well-preserved Spanish-era street lined with heritage houses or bahay na bato . The cobblestone street, stretching from Plaza Burgos to Rivero Street, was historically the business and trade center of North Luzon in the pre-colonial and Spanish colonial Philippines and where most of the residents were affluent Filipino-Chinese traders and merchants.

Today, the street is still flanked with old structures and heritage houses, the majority of which were converted to museums, restaurants, shops, or hotels. You can sample some of Vigan’s signature food like Vigan empanada and longganisa. Whether visiting during the day or at night, Calle Crisologo definitely transports you back in time.

21. Baguio City

The highly urbanized City of Pines is perched in the highlands of the Cordilleras. This elevation gives it the chills, something that attracts tourists from other parts of the country.

But Baguio is more than just a popular tourist destination. It is also rich in history. During the Spanish colonization, the area was never fully under Spanish control because of the effective defensive strategy of the indigenous Igorot.

After the Americans defeated the Spaniards, the Philippines fell into the hands of the United States. And at the turn of the 20th century, the foundations for the development of Baguio City were laid when the Americans established Camp John Hay in 1903, the only hill station in Asia. It jumpstarted the development of the city, which would become Baguio. Most of the historical structures in Baguio were built under American rule.

22. Sultan Kudarat Monument, Sultan Kudarat

Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat , famously known as Sultan Kudarat , was revered and hailed as the greatest sultan that ever ruled in Mindanao. He was a celebrated warrior, fearless in the face of the Spanish conquistadors who threatened to occupy his ancestral domain. He tenaciously defended the Islamic faith and steadfastly held his ground against the Spanish invaders.

Monuments were built honoring him for his bravery and valor. There is one in Makati (Ayala Triangle) and another in Cotabato City, Maguindanao (Tantawan Park). But the most photographed stands in front of the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Capitol in Isulan.

23. Malacañan Palace, Manila

Malacañan Palace is the official residence and office of the President of the Philippines. It has served numerous leaders, from the Spanish Governor-Generals to the Presidents of the Republic of the Philippines.

The vast palace complex, the result of numerous renovations and expansion, encompasses many office buildings, mansions, parks and gardens. Most of them follow the neoclassical and bahay na bato architectural styles. The most prominent buildings are the main Malacañan Palace, the New Executive Building, Mabini Hall, Bonifacio Hall, and Kalayaan Hall (Old Executive Building), which houses the Presidential Museum and Library and the Former Presidential Museum.

The history of Malacañan Palace dates back to the mid 18th century when it was built as a private summer house for the Spanish aristocrat, Don Luis Rocha. In the first quarter of the 19th century, it became the summer residence for the Spanish Governor-General. It survived the destruction caused by World War II.

24. Biak na Bato, Bulacan

The Republic of Biak na Bato was officially established in November 1897 by a revolutionary movement led by Emilio Aguinaldo. Although short-lived, this move sparked hope among other revolutionary leaders in other parts of Luzon.

The Biak na Bato National Park nestles the site where Aguinaldo and his comrades planned and initially formed the revolutionary government in May 1897, months before its official declaration. The national park encompasses over 2,000 hectares of lush forest and rocky gorge.

Because of its historical importance, it gained the status of a national park in 1937. It is presently managed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The park also features rivers, waterfalls, and caves, making it a good option for a quick weekend getaway destination near Manila.

25. Cinco de Noviembre Memorial, Negros Occidental

Also known as the Negros Revolution, it was the greatest political movement bluff by the Negrense people that blindsided the Spanish colonizers and resulted in the establishment of the Negros Republic on November 5, 1898.

To commemorate this monumental event, a memorial landmark with a replica of a drugstore building that served as a hideout and the place where the Negrense revolutionaries plotted the revolution against the Spaniards. It also features an authentic Spanish-era cannon.

It is located close to Balay Negrense and the other ancestral houses in Silay City. Signed in 1989, November 5 (Negros Day) is a special non-working holiday in the province.

In honor of those who died when Supertyphoon Yolanda (international name: Typhoon Haiyan) struck Tacloban City in 2013, a memorial was constructed near the Tacloban City Convention Center. Also known as the Astrodome, this indoor arena played a vital role during the storm's onslaught as it served as an evacuation center for over 8,000 people at the time. 

The monument is an abstract metal structure that resembles strips of metal intertwining together into a vertical pillar. The bridge began construction in 2006 so vehicles could avoid a mountainous section of Agas-Agas that was prone to landslides during the rainy season. It was eventually finished in 2009. 

Two years later, a zipline facility was opened by the bridge to provide a fun experience for tourists. The twin zipline measured up to 880 meters from above the bridge to the riverbank below, making it one of the longest ziplines in the Philippines. However, the operations for the zipline were eventually halted, and the extreme sports facility has yet to reopen. 

Alto Peak towers at about 1,332 meters above sea level, making it one of the tallest points in Eastern Visayas and one of the most notable geographical features of the Philippines . It stands inside the Lake Danao National Park in Ormoc City. The park is also a common jump-off point for those planning to hike up to Alto Peak.

As you make your way through the grassy paths, you will also come across various flora and fauna that thrive within the area, thanks to the cooler climate the abundance of trees provides. You will also pass by another serene body of water called Lake Hanagdan. This is also a great spot to rest and catch your breath before continuing the trek to the summit.

After passing by a local campsite area, you will eventually be able to get a clear view of the peak. As the climb generally takes more than a day to complete, it is recommended to spend the night at the campsite before starting your final ascent to the peak. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the surrounding lakes and forests. 

Known as one of the most notable historical tourist spots in the Philippines and Leyte, the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park in Palo features bronze sculptures of General Douglas MacArthur and his fellow officers as they landed in Leyte Gulf during World War II. MacArthur arrived to help the United States and the Philippines drive away the Imperial Japanese forces that had occupied the Philippines since 1941. 

Before his famous landing in Leyte, the general had initially fought against the Japanese forces months after the occupation began. However, the Japanese army eventually overpowered him and his staff in 1942, forcing them to escape to Australia, where he promised, "I shall return." 

Following his return, the Battle of Leyte Gulf commenced, which ended nearly three years after with the surrender of Japanese forces. Aside from the statues sculpted by Anastacio Caedo, visitors can also visit the nearby museum, where you can read MacArthur's speech upon returning to the Philippines. This landmark is usually one of the highlights of a Tacloban City tour .

These two islands are located off the shore of Hinunangan town in Southern Leyte. Each islet is named after patron saints of the region. Both islands boast two of the best Leyte beaches and pristine waters teeming with marine life.
