Complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi

A complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi – the last point of India!!

Dhanushkodi is the last land or as it’s fondly called the “ Land’s end ” on the Pamban Island, the Island in South India that connects to the mainland Tamil Nadu via the famous Pamban Bridge. Also, Pamban Island hosts the town of Rameswaram – one of the most important Hindu Pilgrimage destinations in India, one of the Char Dhams . But more on Rameswaram later. Today, we will provide you a complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi which is emerging as one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.

History of Dhanushkodi – a ghost town of India

Historically, Dhanushkodi is the place where Sri Rama instructed Hanumana to construct the “ Ram Setu ” bridge to Sri Lanka.

Dhanushkodi is the second ghost town in India that we have visited. The first one being the ghost town of Kuldhara on our trip to Jaisalmer , Rajasthan. Once upon a time, it was a flourishing town and an important trade center in India, just 24 kilometers north of Sri Lanka. But in 1964 when a strong cyclone hit Rameswaram and Pamban Island, the residents of Dhanushkodi were forced to abandon their houses. And move further inland. Since then, Dhanushkodi remains an uninhabited town.

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

At the time when Dhanushkodi was a prosperous town, it had beautiful temples, houses, a lighthouse, it’s own school, hospital, church, hotels as well as shops and even a railway station with the rail tracks reaching literally upto the southern most point of India!! People traveled here by rain from Chennai and then took ferries to Sri Lanka from Dhanushkodi. There are ruins of all these places in the ghost of town of Dhanushkodi as of today. A testimony to the past. And a reminder that nothing is static. In fact, a visit to Dhanuskhodi reminded me of my visit to the Kadaikudi houses on my trip exploring the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu . Which narrates a similar story. With abandoned and empty houses from a flourishing past era, telling numerous stories.

Things to do in Dhanushkodi – how to go about exploring Dhanushkodi

Lets start our complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi with a list of things to do in Dhanuskhodi. Until I myself visited Dhanuskhodi, I thought visiting the Dhanushkodi beach was the only thing to do here. But when I finally visited here, I came to know there are so many things to do in Dhanushkodi. You should definitely set aside at least half a day to spend in Dhanushkodi.

Driving through the Rameswaram – Dhanushkodi Road

A complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi

A drive through the Rameswaram – Dhanushkodi Road is definitely one of the most picturesque drives of India . And it is also one of the most exciting drives. For the last 10 kilometers of this drive, you drive through a road with hardly any land on either side. The road is flanked by the turquoise blue Indian Ocean on one side and the blue – green Bay of Bengal on the other side. Until it comes to an end on the Dhanushkodi Beach at Arichal Munai (Erosion Point), with no land beyond – only water on all three sides !! So, driving through to the Dhanushkodi beach is definitely the top thing to do as per our complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi.

Exploring the ghost town of Dhanushkodi

Nearly 5km before the Dhanushkodi beach lies the Ghost town of Dhanushkodi. As per our complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi, this is a must visit spot. Afterall, when you have come so far, you must visit the ruins of the old town of Dhanushkodi once. On our own trip to Dhanushkodi, we first drove straight through the Rameswaram – Dhanushkodi road to reach the Dhanushkodi beach. Then, on our way back from there, we stopped by the Dhanushkodi ruins.

We parked our vehicle by the road side. And then went on foot to explore the ruins of Dhanushkodi. There is not much left here. The first sight that you see is that of the old railway station. It is visible right from the road.

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

As you move further behind it, there are many huts in the area, of local vendors and local people. Couple of them host temple of Sri Rama. One of the temple has the famous floating Ram Setu stone to see.

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

After visiting these temples, we proceeded beyond them, to find the ruins of the original old Dhanushkodi Temple and some of the old houses of Dhanushkodi in dilapidated condition.

There are a few houses and temples by the beach as you continue watching. And the ruins of the old church But, it was the evening hours, almost sunset time. And there was hardly a soul here. However, I did encounter a lot of beautiful peacocks roaming around freely in this area, which was a delight to the eyes!!

A complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi

Near the road, there are some stalls selling items made of sea shell and local handicrafts. Overall, within 15-20 minutes I was able to explore the whole area and be back in my car.

Interesting Fact: Many parts of the ghost town of Dhanushkodi remain submerged under the sea. In December 2004, when the sea had receded around 500 meters, a lot of these submerged ruins could be seen from the roadside! Even the wreckage of the half submerged Rameswaram – Dhanushkodi train lies here. This train was hit by the same cyclone that turned the town of Dhanushkodi into a ghost town.

Dhanushkodi Beach

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

One of the most unique beaches in India, the Dhanushkodi beach is the last beach of India. It is surrounded by water from all 3 sides. This is where you can see the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meeting together. While one side is calmer, there are huge waves crashing against the shore on the other side. And the uninterrupted wind is insanely strong.

You can cross the boulders and reach the fine sand beach. But it is not advised to go in the water here. For, the sea gets suddenly deep here. And also, the weather is very unpredictable here, you can expect strong waves anytime.

Viewing of Sri Lanka from Dhanushkodi

Yes, it is possible to get a glimpse of Sri Lanka from Dhanushkodi on a clear day. And also there are vendors with telescopes setup where at a nominal cost you can get a very good view of the Sri Lankan mainland, which is just 24 kilometers from Dhanushkodi!!

Enjoy seafood in Dhanushkodi

As you approach the Dhanushkodi town and Dhanushkodi beach, you will see numerous stalls on both sides of the road selling sea food. Although being a vegetarian, I can’t comment on the quality and taste. But I have heard good things about the food here from my friends. So, we put enjoying the sea food in Dhanushkodi as one of the main things to do in our complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi. Do time your visit in such a way that you can stop here for lunch.

Visit The  Kothandaramaswamy Temple

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

The Kothandaramaswamy Temple is located on the way to Dhanushkodi, at a little deviation of around 250meters from the main road. Located amidst the sea, this temple is the only structure that remained intact during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone. The idle of God Rama inside this temple holds a “ Kothandam ” which literally means a bow. And hence the temple is named the Kothandaramaswamy Temple.

This temple is believed to be over 1000 years old. It is said that as per Ramayana, this is the place where Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana, took refuge and surrendered to Rama.

Enjoy birdwatching in the bird sanctuary on way to Dhanushkodi at Gulf of Mannar

There is a bird sanctuary called “Gulf of Mannar” on the shallow lands besides the Bay of Bengal where you see a lot of local and migratory birds while driving to the Dhanushkodi beach. It is a feast to the eyes. Not just the birds sitting on the shallow land, waiting to catch a fish. But at times, you even see huge batches of birds gliding through the clear skies above the sea!! Some of the birds include flamingoes, curlew, gulls, terns, sandpipers, plovers, reef herons and egrets.

Try your hands on some excellent photography in Dhanushkodi

I will not be exaggerating if I say Dhanushkodi is a photographer’s dream. Anywhere you turn your head, you see picture perfect scenes. I myself stopped my vehicle and jumped out at least 5 times to take photographs while on my way to and from Dhanushkodi at random spots. Apart from the endless effort to capture the beauty of the beach itself. See some of the pictures below and you will understand what I am talking about.

One of the beautiful boats on the Dhanushkodi beach

A sight of horses on the beach side – resonates with something you would expect to see in Leh & Laddakh!!

A beautiful sunset at Dhanushkodi

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

Apart from the above things to do, you can do a lot of things on your trip to Dhanushkodi. For example, you can get an instant photo printed from one of the many photographers flocking the beach. Or, enjoy a snack of fruit salad or “jhal murhi” or other Indian snacks from one of the street vendors lining the sides of the beach. Or, just sit on one of the spots with beautiful views of the ocean and relax. (That would be my personal favourite thing to do in Dhanushkodi)

How to reach Dhanushkodi

The Rameswaram – Dhanushkodi road is an excellent road connecting the town of Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is located almost 19.5 km from Rameswaram. And the Dhanushkodi beach is located almost 5km further. You can reach Rameswaram, located on Pamban Island by both road and rail. The famous Pamban Railway Bridge connects Pamban Island from Ramnathpuram in Tamil Nadu mainland. Lots of trains comply from Madurai. By road, NH 87 connects Madurai to Rameswaram and is in excellent condition. It takes around 3 hours to reach Rameswaram from Madurai by road. And if you are coming from far, you can fly into Madurai and then take either the rail or road from there.

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

On our own trip, we drove from Bangalore to Madurai on day 1 and then from Madurai to Rameswaram on day 2. After reaching Rameswaram around 2:30pm and checking-in into our hotel, we proceeded to Dhanushkodi on the extension of NH 87 , on the Rameswaram – Dhanushkodi road.

Where to stay near Dhanushkodi

The town of Rameswaram has several hotels and hostels of all budget range to stay. We have personally stayed in the Daiwik Hotel on our first visit to Rameswaram. And in S S Grand hotel on our second visit. Both the hotels were comfortable with good food options. And both of these are located right on the main highway as you enter the town of Rameswaram. There are also some hotels and resorts near the beaches in Rameshwaram that you can try. Here’s a list of hotels for you to browse through in Rameshwaram.

Where to park on Dhanushkodi beach

When visiting Dhanushkodi, you can park by the side of the road as you reach Dhanushkodi beach. There is no large parking space as such given there is no land only!  My advise, park a little further to the beach because as time passes, the space near the beach gets super crowded. And it takes a lot of effort to navigate through the crowd. When we arrived at Dhanushkodi beach around 5 pm in the evening, it was already crowded. So, we parked on the side of the road, almost the beginning of the line. And then walked around 500 meters to the beach.

What to wear when visiting Dhanushkodi

There is no dress code as such to visit Dhanushkodi. But given it is mostly hot here all through the year, wear comfortable breathing cotton cloths and comfortable walking beach appropriate slippers. Have your sunglasses with you and wear sunscreen generously. Also carry a water bottle with you and keep yourself hydrated.

What is the best season to visit Dhanushkodi

Although the region is hot and humid all through the year, best time to visit will be from November to February when it is moderately hot. When we visited Dhanushkodi in the third week of February, the temperature was hovering between 26 – 30 degrees celcius. Which was hot, but bearable.

Over the years, this region has started seeing frequent cyclones in December and sometimes in January. So, be aware of the weather conditions before you plan your trip. On our first trip to this region, we couldn’t visit Dhanushkodi as it was raining like crazy. While we visited the temples of Madurai , the Ramalingeshwara Temple in Rameswaram, Brihadeeshwara temple in Tanjore and Karaikudi Tourist places on our year end trip, we couldn’t visit Dhanushkodi. Because that one afternoon it rained insanely. We still took an attempt to drive to Dhanushkodi beach, but nothing was visible. And we had to turn back when we were half way through. Little did we know then that we will come back here within an year!!

What is the best time to visit Dhanushkodi

As per our complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi, Morning and evening hours are best time to visit Dhanushkodi as per our complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi. As, it is an excellent spot to see both sunrise on one side and sunset on the other side. If you want to visit at a time when there is almost no other soul on the beach, visit in the morning hours. While if you want to enjoy the buzzing beach, visit in the evening hours around 4:00pm. You can as well pack a picnic bag and enjoy a day here if you don’t mind the sun that much!!

The official Dhanushkodi visiting time is 6:00am to 5:00pm.

Also, there is an INR 20 entry fee to Dhanushkodi per vehicle.

Hope this complete guide to visit Dhanushkodi helps you plan your own successful trip to Dhanushkodi!!

Dhanushkodi Travel guide: The Haunting of a Forgotten Town by the Indian Ocean

About the blog: Traveling to Dhanushkodi, often touted as India’s ghost town, located by the south of Pamban island, Tamil Nadu (also known as Rameswaram) is an intriguing experience. Highly regarded as a holy site among the Hindu pilgrims visiting Rameswaram temple, Dhanushkodi is also a place where the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal merge together. Ram Setu from the Hindu epic Ramayana is proven to exit where the lands end at Dhanushkodi.

The scenic stretch of motorable highway connecting Dhanushkodi with Rameswaram makes for one of the best road trips in India.

Dhanushkodi Travel Guide: at a glance

It is incredibly easy to do a day trip from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi!

From Rameswaram town to the tip of Dhanushkodi, a government bus runs every 30 minutes.

Bus fare to Dhanushkodi is INR 30.

Shared van visits Dhanushkodi, as well as you can hire an auto.

Noone lives in Dhanushkodi, barring a few fishermen folks.

Visitors are allowed at Dhanushkodi from 8am to 5pm. It is impossible to shoot sunset pictures from Dhanushkodi.

A few shacks and fruit vendors sells snacks and local meal, fried fish for visitors.

The best time to travel to Dhanushkodi is from October to March, though the weather is tropical. Midday suns scores high.

If you walk at the backwaters and offbeat places, be careful of tidal waves. You may be stranded in the middle of the sea, with not a soul to help. Dhanushkodi has extreme nature conditions.

Traveling to Dhanushkodi opened up a new world for me! I recall this day with fondness and joy!

Dhanushkodi, Where Life Stood Still

In an alternate world, Dhanushkodi lives and thrives as a picturesque town, set amidst the gentle green and blue hues of a bay and an ocean! In this southernmost island of India, men wake up at the wee hours and venture into the deep of the sea to find day’s catch.

Womenfolk conduct household chores and ready the shacks that sell the seashells by the seashore. Children walk the way to nearby primary school, their reflection shining pretty of the backwaters. Seagulls sneak in with waves of Bay of Bengal.

A church made of corals (yes, you read that right) stands tall. The tip of India’s eastern coast, the Pamban island also houses a rail line, bringing in the world.

But man proposes, nature disposes…

Reality is scary, if you take a lingering look, you know the rail tracks are nothing but the mirage play of a cruel nature, that engulfed the little town of Dhanushkodi. During the horrendous 1966 Rameswaram cyclone , the sea soared like never before, brought in the scourge of 7 meters high waves, and washed away the very last trace of life.

The Last Train to Dhanuskodi

… an eventful night that wiped away life from the town of Dhanushkodi, forming India’s abandoned ghost town from the South.

Pamban Railway bridge

Train no 653, the Pamban to Dhanushkodi passenger train was crawling towards the destination amid horrid weather, the dark of night and almost no signal. The driver hesitated before igniting the engine, not having any idea what was looming in front. At this point, a huge tidal wave washed away the train along with 150 passengers that night. Not a single one was found alive.

The rail station at Dhanushkodi stood erect in the face of gutsy cyclonic wind and housed the few survivors of the island for that night.

It was hardly a decade after independence. Where was the rest of the world? Far away and difficult to get connected.

Mainland India came to know about the tragedy only after a couple of days. Later, only the nose of the rail engine was spotted from aerial surveys.

The government of India rehabilitated the survivors and declared the area abandoned.

“Look, I got Mobile signal from Sri Lanka!”

The remains of Dhanushkodi sits close to the international border between India and Sri Lanka. In fact, at just 45 metres in length on a shoal in Palk Strait, Dhanushkodi is also one of the smallest land borders in the world. In friendlier times, there was a ferry service between India and Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) which stopped for politics. And, the Rameswaram cyclone of 1966.

I tried to look for Dhanushkodi later while my two weeks journey across the island nation of Sri Lanka.

Where is Ram Setu at Dhanushkodi? Or you call it Adam’s Bridge?

The Indian epic Ramayana indicates an existing bridge at Dhanushkodi, also called Ram Setu, over the sea using which Ram’s army went to conquer Lanka and bring Sita home.

It is hard to believe that an army of monkeys can actually help build a bridge, that too over a sea! However, the epic Ram Setu appears to be a reality by the end of Dhanushkodi island.

Hindu Rituals being performed at Dhanushkodi

Temple documents of Rameswaram suggests the existence of a bridge, fit to be crossed by feet and existing above sea level connecting India with Sri Lanka, then Bharat and Lanka.  For the uninitiated, Rameswaram’s temple is one of the most prominent and oldest pilgrimage sites in India. Hints are pitted against another catastrophic cyclone from 14 hundred century which caused the bridge to go down under the sea.

However, nature is whimsical. Rameswaram cyclone gobbled up a substantial landmass but caused the Ram Setu to reappear. It is basically a series of limestone shoals, coral reefs and sandbanks. GSI has researched to find that the Ram Setu, also known as Adam’s bridge in the medieval western world is close to 125,000 years old!

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

I must disclose before you get your hopes very high, Ram Setu is hardly visible through bare eyes. Sattelite images so far have been able to capture many photos and confirmed its existence.

Besides, no matter how romantic it sounds, you cannot walk up to the tip of the sandy stretch, the area believed to be the starting point of Ram Setu. The sea is rough and may swell without prior notice. The area is heavily guarded by men in uniform.

Taking a dip in the sea is prohibited at Dhanushkodi, however some people manage to work their way around the guards

Arichamunai: Is not it a Beautiful Name?

Despite Ram Setu being an almost mythical legacy, there was never any dearth of pilgrimage to Arichamunai, the easternmost point, where lands end.

Faithfuls visit this place to take a dip at the Bay of Bengal, considered a sacred ritual.  Before the construction of the national highway, a part of the Ramayana Circuit, many minivans would ply. There is a thrilling youtube video where the minivan seems to be sailing over the sea! Otherwise, a lot of them would earlier walk the miles as well.

The newly constructed road to Dhanushkodi has used the latest technology ensuring a robust stand against tidal waves.  You can easily bike around with your own vehicle until sunset.

Bus to Dhanushkodi from rameswaram

Dhanushkodi, as I saw it…

As the bus moved towards the salient land of Dhanushkodi leaving behind the bustle of Rameswaram temple town, I could not but gape at the beauty of abundant nature. School of flamingoes by the shore, mangroves standing still by the rugged terrain, lifeless arid land and not a soul to spot, what is not there to like?

Arichamunai is considerably busy with the plight of pilgrims, tourist vehicles and guards. Indian ocean looked rather dirty with plenty of roots and hyacinth floating around. The Bay of Bengal was crowded, like any other beach in India is. The hues of water are visibly different. While the Indian ocean retains its royal blue tone, Bay of Bengal is greenish blue and calmer.

Soon after, I left for the coral church …

Whispers of the Lifeless Village

The church and surrounding area stand witness to the gruelling night of the cyclone, even after half a century. It is empty, devastated, broken into pieces and destroyed beyond any repair. Not just the church but a few buildings, apparently school, the office by the railway station are scattered lifeless. Three pillars stand like a skeleton as the remnant of the Dhanushkodi railway station.

Tourist vehicles make a quick stop here. A few stalls serve fresh fish on banana leaves. Seashells make for perfect souvenirs.  Men and women buy, rest, drink tender coconut.

A few meters ahead of the stop, I had spotted a backwater area dotted with beautiful birds. I wanted to get close by and click a few pictures. Upon asking locals if I can go, I learnt that is where the Ghosts stay! “Bhoot”, said the Tamilzhan Da!

The Ghost of Dhanushkodi

South Indian Mask: Dhanushkodi Travel blog

I am a brave girl until the Sun sets. I had to walk towards the forelorn livelihood of ghosts.

Behind the pillars of railway remains at Dhanushkodi, I found a backwater where a father and son were searching for fishes. A school of cranes were giving them company. I walked past the backwater, met a herd of goats, clicked a few abandoned ships until I found I am walking on a dicey, very dicey land.

Dhanushkodi Backwaters: an offbeat guide to Dhanushkodi

There were tiny conch shells lurking behind muddy earth. One absent-minded step may result in a bloodied toe. A stretch of white sands was lying at a distance with an alluring view of Bay of Bengal. Soaking my feet in the Indian ocean was out of the question. The roar reminded me of thunder! “I have to make it to the Bay of Bengal at least!”  I thought in my mind.

Dhanushkodi Backwaters: things to do in Dhanushkodi

On the other hand, the clock reminded the backwater will welcome the tide in a while. I do not know swimming. There is no other way to make it back either!

It also stuck in my mind, I was walking on the land that buried an entire town! Suddenly the wind fell heavy. I felt tiny, minuscule and nervous in front of a profound presence of nature.

Dhanushkodi Backwaters: Dhanushkodi travel guide and things to do in Dhanushkodi

Far away, a man in a white mundu was walking with a fishnet in his hand. I followed his trail and finally made it to the shore.

Lifeless? I have my doubt. The land was filled with small glass bottles of alcohol. Cheap thrills, I laughed. Fishnets were left to dry, still bearing numerous conch shells inside.

Goats of Tamilnadu: Dhanushkodi, how to visit from rameswaram

According to local fishermen’s testimony, the 2004 tsunami of the Indian Ocean, the sea receded about 500 meters and had uncovered the ruins of the forgotten habitat of Dhanushkodi.

Of life and death: ruins of Dhanushkodi

The Tandav Nritya of Ratnakar and Mahadhadhi wiped away every trace of Dhanushkodi, leaving behind a barren stretch of salient land, one side stepping down to the deep of the ocean, the other side harbouring backwaters where migratory birds alight without a fear.

How to reach Dhanushkodi?

You can either hire an auto or rent a jeep to reach Dhanushkodi, the tip of India’s far off land. Private jeep or auto will take anywhere between 600 to 2000 INR.

Public transport runs from as early as 7 am. the Tamilnadu state bus services run those massive yellow buses that ply the tourists and local fishermen with day’s stock to and fro. You will get a bus at every 30 min interval.

The bus also smells a lot like a moving fish bazar. My Bengali nose is well conditioned with all types of fish “perfume” and I did not have any issue. However, this may be a put off to some.

What to eat at Dhanushkodi: fried fish by the settlers. A few fishermen folks live in Dhanushkodi.

Everything you should remember before visiting Dhanushkodi

  • Reports suggest that the place being an abandoned one becomes a breeding ground of anti-social activities, especially during the dark of night. Do not think of camping at Dhanishkodi beach. Not just the smugglers, a potential hightide can also take no mercy for your life!
  • The best time to visit Dhanushkodi is anywhere between the relatively (and that’s the key word here) colder months of November to February. midday sun at Dhanushkodi is extremely punishing and may cause serious damage like sunstroke, migrane etc. Take necessary precautions like an umbrella, a cover/dupatta for your face, ample water in a recyclable bottle and sunscreen.
  • I suggest visiting Dhanushkodi after 2 PM since the heat gets bearable ..
  • If you are off to explore the backwaters of your own, be responsible. There are quicksands. There is not a soul anywhere around. If you lose the way back (unlikely) or get stranded at a sandy shore behind backwaters fueled by hightide (very likely), you will not be in a position to access immediate help.

Dhanushkodi Hut: who lives at Dhanushkodi?

  • Dhanushkodi is accessible to visitors from 7 am till 6 pm. Sunrise or sunset is wishful thinking however can only be a profound experience if at all you can manage to stretch your time limit a bit. Dial the sun to set a bit early for one day? Just maybe?

Who lives in Dhanusjkodi

  • Also not fit for habitat, as declared by the government of India, Dhanushkodi houses a few fishermen’s huts. They ideally leave early morning with their fishing vessel. the huts are makeshift as most of them have a home back in Pamban island.

Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram 3-Day Itinerary – Visit to an engineering marvel

Rameshwaram (also called as Rameswaram), is one of India’s southernmost cities. A city known for its beautiful ancient temples and mythology, this is slowly becoming an offbeat destination for many travellers. Rameshwaram is a city revered by Hindus, being the birthplace of the famous Ramayana epic. Every temple in this city and its surrounding areas have an interesting story behind it and the various mythological events that took place . It’s incidentally one of the two places in  India where you let go of your sins and desires, the other being Kashi.Hence a post on Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram 3-Day Itinerary 🙂

Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram 3-day itinerary Pamban Bridge

If you’re wondering that Rameshwaram is just a city of just temples, you are so wrong. In fact, Rameshwaram is famous  for several other things:

  • The amazing Architectures and sculptures inside temples,
  • 1000+ pillars inside RamanathaSwamy Temple
  • The mighty Pamban Bridge
  • Surfing(Yes you heard that right) in Ariyaman Beach
  • Danushkodi(the tip of the Indian Peninsula) & Adam’s Bridge

So if you have a planned visit to South India, this is a must visit place you should definitely try. Here’s a short 3-day itinerary that should work out perfectly for your trip.

Travel to Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram is connected from the Indian Mainland by the Pamban Bridge. The Pamban Bridge is definitely an engineering marvel that one should never miss and definitely a crown jewel in India’s architectural and engineering talents. In order to witness in different ways, take any train that goes from Madurai to Rameshwaram. This train goes through the bridge that’s built on top of the sea between mainland and Rameshwaram. The stunning views from the window can blow your breath away and something you can never witness anywhere else. On your way back, hire a cab to drop you back to Madurai. This allows you to stop in the middle of the bridge and click yourself some beautiful pictures with the sea and the train bridge as background.

Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram 3-day itinerary Pamban Bridge

There are two passenger trains from depart Madurai to Rameshwaram at  6.50 AM and 12.40PM, and this should be ideal for your onward trip(Roughly 4 hours journey). Requires no seat reservation and costs just 35 Rs (0.5$) for a 1-way ticket, available directly at the station.

Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – ramanathaswamy temple & surroundings.

1212 corridors in Rameshwaram

Towards afternoon, head to the famous RamanathaSwamy temple. The temple has 1212 pillars and innumerable sculptures, ancient architectures and paintings adorned in walls. These paintings describe the events that took place in the Ramayana era and the significance of this city. (Min time required is 2-3 hours) though some spend even an entire day to revel in this beauty and study about it.

Spend your evenings walking around this beautiful city, purchase some souvenirs and even visit a nearby beach.

Day 2 – Dhanushkodi & Adam’s Bridge

A trip to Rameshwaram doesn’t end without a trip to this once beautiful village called Dhanushkodi. Being at the tip of India, this village was completely swept by a Tsunami several decades back and all’s left is the remains of an ancient city. Nevertheless, it’s a must visit place, to travel to the tip of Southern India, literally a few nautical miles away from the country of Sri Lanka. A short 20 min bus ride from Rameshwaram to the starting point of Dhanushkodi.

From here, just get it in one of those mini vans and they’d drop you right in the epicenter of the town. You can witness a beautiful island, where once stood an ancient village. A few broken walls, ruins and a temple is all is left. Just meters away is Adam’s bridge(Ramar Sethu Palam), a bridge that once connected Pamban island to Sri Lanka. Mythologists believe that this was built by Lord Rama himself during the times of Ramayana, while some scientists strive to dispel this as myth (I still prefer to believe the former). You can spend roughly half a day here.

Dhanushkodi Ramar Paalam

Day 3: For the Temple Seekers

For those religious people, go for the 1 day Rameshwaram Ramayana tour from a nearby travel agency. A tour that covers several temples in surrounding villages. This includes:

Devipattnam, Uttrakosai, Thirupullani, Thiruvadanai, Kilakarai,Sethukarai, Uthirakosamangai,Villuvandi Theertham, Vivekandakendram and Ekanthiramar Temple.

Or for the adventure seekers, head to Ariyaman beach and try your hand at Wind surfing and other water sports available there

Head to Madurai directly from here and catch your return train/flight.

Hope you liked this Dhanushkodi Rameshwaram 3-Day itinerary. Feel free to drop in your suggestions or any questions on the same.

Dhanuskodi Beach Rameswaram – “Natural beauty and historical ruins – An Experience like no other”

Attractions & Sightseeing Beaches Ecotourism

Dhanuskodi Beach Rameswaram, Situated at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the Tamil Nadu state, is a place that exudes natural beauty. You can wonder how the place would have been long ago by looking at its historical ruins and at the same time relax your mind by looking at its ever natural beauty.

The story of Dhanushkodi dates back a long time when god walked along with the humans

“Lord Ram had to rescue his wife from evil forces of ravana and hence had to cross the ocean. It is said that he built a bridge or crossway called Ram Sethu which literally means Rama’s bridge. After his victory over evil the new king of Lanka named vibishana wanted to destroy the bridge. Accepting the request of the king Lord Ram broke it with one end of its bow. Hence the town got its name “Dhanush – Bow and kodi meaning end”

Even now there seems to be a series of rocks and islets which could be the bridge built by God himself!!

It is also a popular belief that this very bridge was an intact and passable on foot until a cyclone in 1480 CE destroyed the region.

Dhanushkodi is a pilgrimage and one of the most important sites for the followers of hinduism. The Place where lord Ram started his journey to lanka is marked by the Kodhandaram temple.

A spiritual bath is usually taken by the pilgrims after their visit to rameshwaram pilgrimage to kashi is deemed incomplete without the bath at dhanushkodi. One of the scenic moments in life would be the sight of two different water bodies, with all different characteristics having a confluence at a place. And one of that place would be Dhanushkodi.

The ocean near Dhanuskodi Beach Rameswaram is the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. The Bay of Bengal is called Mahodadhi and the Ratnakara is the Indian Ocean. This confluence makes it a holy site and also a scenic beauty. The Indian Ocean is usually rough and deep while the Bay of Bengal is usually shallow and calm. The shore near Bay of Bengal is shallow and hence one could walk and witness a rich marine life thriving in it.Corals, fishes, seaweeds and starfishes adorn the shallow shores of Bay of Bengal.

There is also a proud event that people here cherish. This is the very place where, in January 1897 Swami Vivekananda a great philosopher from India set foot on Indian, after his famous speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions held in the United States.

Lo Behold!! It is a ghost Town. The reason for it is the 1964 cyclone commonly referred as the “Dhanushkodi cyclone”. Dhanushkodi was once a busy fishing village and a thriving tourist spot as well. The sand generated by cyclone covered the whole landmass.

A visit to Dhanushkodi would definitely give it a lot of thought. The confluence of the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean, The divinity and the town in ruins covered by sand is sure to remain in your mind for a long time.

In relation to Hinduism, it is regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage towns because of its mythological references in Ramayana. A spiritual sanctuary is not what Rameswaram offers only, but also a great place for friends who want to see unique environments and experience rich cultural traditions. Discover the best places you should visit when you are with your friends.

1. Ramanathaswamy Temple

The Ramanathaswamy Temple, a focal point of Rameswaram, astonishes people with its architectural finesse and spiritual forcefulness. 2. Dhanushkodi

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

Dhanushkodi ghost town lies about 20 kilometers away from Rameswaram at the south-eastern end of Pamban Island. However, after it was destroyed by cyclone in 1964, the town became an otherworldly attractive place for exploration purposes only. There are remnants of churches, railways stations half underwater among other structures which offer very emotional sights too occasionally rippling softly through the waters . This narrow piece of land between Bay o f Bengal and Indian Ocean leading to Dhanushkodi provides some thrilling views that you would not want your friends to miss.

3. Pamban Bridge

The Pamban Bridge links mainland India with Rameswaram and was India's first sea bridge as well as held this record until Bandra-Worli Sea Link was completed in 2010. This bridge provides a great opportunity for taking perfect photos due to its blue water that is spacious. Ensure you do not miss the amazing experience of trains going across this bridge.

4. Agni Theertham

rameswaram dhanushkodi tourist places

Amongst 64 sacred bathing locations in India, Agni Theertham is located on the beach fronting Ramanathaswamy Temple. It is believed that cleansing one's soul requires jumping into it. Moreover, the seaside here is peaceful and can be spent chilling under the sun or even playing beach soccer with friends.

5. The Five-faced Hanuman Temple

It showcases worshiping Hanuman in his five-headed forms as its main deity. There exists also a floating rock which supposedly formed part of Bengal and Lanka connection according to Ramayana legend or myth . This shrine becomes fascinating for individuals who like Hindu epics when these two combine.

About Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi is the southern tip of the Rameswaram Island in the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu. Dhanushkodi used to be flourishing town on the tip of Indian peninsula, but a massive cycle swept through the town in 1964, killing hundreds of people and destructing the town. After this incident, government declared Dhanushkodi as unfit for human habitation and it has become a 'ghost' town since. Today only few fishermen venture on its beaches.

Tip of Dhanushkodi which is a point of confluence of Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea holds a religious importance. Mysterious Adam’s Bridge is believed to have been constructed by Lord Rama to cross over to Lanka. There are series of rocks floating in the setu that are the remnants of the Rama Bridge formed in the Ramayana. The metal road simply ends here and one can simply get engulfed in the vastness of the ocean standing in front.

Jeeps still ply here from Rameswaram, and tourists can still see the remains of old railway station, government office buildings and some houses.

Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi : A trip to the tip of India

Photo of Prachi

Due to a minor mishap, our arrival in Rameswaram was delayed by almost 5 hours.

Reaching Rameswaram at around 12 noon, we checked into our hotel, ordered food and had a bit of rest since my parents were tired by the night long journey.

The hotel was really good, just 5 minutes walking distance from the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

One could also see the sea from higher floors.

The in-house food was also very good and tasty.

Later in the evening we visited the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

One of the grandest Shiva temple in India, is simply stunning. Due to security restrictions mobile phones and cameras are banned inside the temple premises now, so we could not capture the beauty of the temple. But one google search and you will know what a grandeur Rameswaram temple is.

One among the 12 holy Jyotirlingas, Rameswaram is a major pilgrim town.

Paying our reverence to Lord Shiva, we visited the Rameswaram beach and enjoyed some really nice Vadas and coconut water by the beach. Being a fishing town, there were a lot of fishing boats docked at the harbor.

One can also shop for local handicrafts at the shops adjoining the beach and the temple.

We later roamed around the town in search of local cuisine, and found a really nice place offering thalis for dinner in just ₹70 per person. (I do not remember the name the hotel, but it is nearby to the temple, Also there are many small hotels you can try) .

Dhanushkodi

The next day, we had to cover a lot of places and just had half a day.

Early morning we began our road trip towards Dhanushkodi. It was raining the earlier night, so we were sceptical about the weather, but this morning it was a clear sunny day and we were happy.

One can easily hire a rickshaw(3 seater/6 seater) or a van or a local car for a trip to Dhanushkodi. Bargain with the rickshaw-wallah or car rental as they tend to quote a very high price.

It takes about an hour to reach Dhanushkodi from Rameswaram town.

The view enroute is simply stunning. (follow me on Instagram @indiatrotter_prachi, to see the video on my road trip). Sea waves crashing on either sides of a well constructed National Highway, wind blowing, just amp up your favourite song and enjoy the ride.

The journey itself is worth all the hassles to reach the southernmost part of India and the destination is all the more awesome.

On reaching Dhanushkodi end point, the view of Bay of Bengal on one side and Indian Ocean on the other, leaves you speechless.

The windy beachfront, is clean and not much crowded.

One can also shop for handicrafts at the shops lining the beach.

You will also visit the abandoned ghost town of Dhanushkodi, the village which completely destroyed by tsunami.

There are just some ruins remaining now.

Lands End - last point of mainland India , you even get Srilankan cellular network in your phone here.

Pamban Island

After enjoying the Dhanushkodi islands, we returned to Rameswaram to visit the Pamban bridge.

An engineering marvel, the bridge was the longest bridge of India since it's construction in 1964 to 2010.

Also we visited the Villoondi Theertham.

Legend has it that this was created when lord Rama shot an arrow to get fresh water from the sea to quench his wife Sita’s thirst. A long platform leads you to this holy well and it is magical to walk on it as you see the sea from both the sides. The water in the well is quite mysteriously sweet in spite of being surrounded by salt sea water all around and devotees believe it will do them good if they take a sip of this holy water. Truly one is amazed how the water can be sweet.

Next we visited the APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial.

India's beloved president was born in the town of Rameswaram. Hence a memorial stands here in his name, where we can see his famous accomplishments, his personal items, a short documentary on his life and much more.

A visit to this place leaves you highly inspired.

View from the Pamban bridge - endless expanse of sea!

This was the end of our day.

After lunch we boarded reached the Rameswaram railway station to board our train to Madurai.

The train will travel from the iconic Pamban bridge.

This was one of the items in my bucket list - travelling in a train atop the Pamban bridge.

There are just 4-5 trains which travel from the famous bridge, so book your ticket in advance.

Photo of Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi : A trip to the tip of India by Prachi

Do visit the Rameswaram island for some peace, serenity and fun!

The best time to visit Rameswaram is from October to April. The Monsoons (July to September) are humid with average rainfalls, but, the scenic view of the coastal region during these months is enjoyable, that is when we visited this place!

The roads are well maintained, nearest airport is Madurai.
