The Best White Sneakers

Zoe Vanderweide

By Zoe Vanderweide

Zoe Vanderweide is a writer focused on style and accessories. She has personally tested nearly 300 bags, jeans, bras, shoes, and more.

Cool, comfortable, and perennially in style, white sneakers are a wardrobe must-have, and the best ones have MVP potential. Like a crisp button-down shirt or a just-right pair of jeans, these shoes are true closet chameleons—supporting actors one moment, showstoppers the next. But there are countless options to choose from, so finding the white sneakers that simultaneously fit your vibe and your feet is no cakewalk.

Since 2019, we’ve laced up 30 contenders (and considered 120 pairs), in men’s, women’s, and unisex sizes. With help from a panel of testers, we’ve landed on six terrific, highly varied options: classic, trend-proof canvas low-tops ; a slim and sporty pair with soccer roots ; iconic streetwear sneakers with a confident silhouette ; off-white retro tennies ; a sophisticated, minimalist pair in full-grain leather ; and a pair of mesh sneakers with a distinctive look and decadently cushiony feel .

How we picked

We searched for great-looking sneakers that would stand the test of time.

We wanted shoes that fit well and felt good. We also preferred those with an easy break-in period (or, ideally, none at all).

We looked for shoes with durable materials and well-executed details, plus other signs of superior craftsmanship.

The shoes we recommend are perennial models sold by major retailers, in a wide range of women’s and men’s or unisex sizes.

The research

Classic canvas kicks: converse chuck taylor all star (low-top), streamlined and sporty sneakers: adidas samba og shoes, iconic streetwear sneakers: nike air force 1 ’07 (low-top), retro tennis shoes: reebok club c 85 vintage shoes, elevated all-leather sneakers: greats the royale 2.0, cool and ultra-comfy mesh sneakers: nike air max 90, other good white sneakers, how we picked and tested, the competition.

A pair of white canvas, low-top Converse Chuck Taylor All Star.

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star (low-top, unisex)

Legendary low-tops.

The least expensive of our picks, these iconic canvas sneakers go with everything, and they look cool whether they’re worn in or squeaky clean. But they may not offer enough support for everyone, and they do tend to make feet look longer.

Buying Options

Nothing beats the effortlessly casual look of Converse Chuck Taylor All Star (low-top. unisex) sneakers. From Michelle Obama to supermodel Gigi Hadid , everyone has been spotted rocking these canvas kicks. They’re cool, inexpensive, built to last—and they come in a wide range of sizes.

Take your pick of outfits—Chuck Taylors work with your favorite midi dress, shorts, or even a full suit. Or lean into the brand’s skater history, and pair these shoes with ripped jeans and an oversize sweater. Just keep in mind that Chucks are long, so for the best fit, go half a size down.

They’re eternally fashionable. Chuck Taylor low-top sneakers are as instantly recognizable as they are pleasing to the eye; it’s no wonder they’ve been going strong since 1957. (The high-tops are older still, dating back to 1917 ). These tennies have an ultra-low profile and a narrow, foot-elongating shape (which some of our testers liked but others didn’t appreciate), with a rubber sole and distinctive rubber toe cap. And if you have wide feet, they also come in wide widths. The canvas uppers are bright white—though they don’t stay that way for long—with contrasting red and blue bands of rubber foxing around the soles; an all-white option is also available.

They’re a bargain. Usually priced around $60, Chuck Taylors are cheaper than most of the white sneakers we tested. And they can last anywhere from a year to nearly a decade, depending on how much mileage you rack up in them. One Wirecutter staffer, who treks across New York City in his Chucks almost daily, replaces them annually. But senior style editor Jennifer Hunter, who lives in less-walkable Los Angeles, says that the rubber on hers didn’t start peeling until year seven of light wear.

Close-up of a person wearing a pair of white canvas Converse Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers.

They don’t have a ton of cushioning. Chuck Taylors have canvas uppers that aren’t padded around the collars and tongues. (We didn’t have any issues with blistering.) The foam insoles are firm and comfortable, but they are completely flat. So some people may not find them supportive enough, especially if they’re spending a full day on their feet.

The pared-down construction has its upsides. Chuck Taylors are the lightest of our picks (weighing just 9 ounces each, in a women’s size 7½). And their pliable, unlined uppers—which have eyelet holes for ventilation on the inner sides—don’t overheat in warmer weather.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Chuck Taylors sneakers have a long, narrow shape, so they can make feet appear longer than they actually are.
  • In our experience, white Chucks get dirty quickly; Converse advises against machine-washing them , though multiple staffers report they’ve had good luck putting theirs in the machine (in a mesh laundry bag) and air-drying them. (That said, we think Chucks look cool when they’re a bit grungy.)
  • These shoes don’t have much padding or arch support, so they may not work for some feet.
  • Shoe sizes: unisex/men’s 3 to 16; women’s 5 to 18 ; also available in wide
  • Sizing advice: These shoes are long and narrow; Converse recommends buying half a size smaller than your usual size.
  • Color options: more than a dozen colors; create your own design

A pair of Adidas Samba OG Shoes.

Adidas Samba OG Shoes (unisex)

Pitch perfect.

Slim and stylish, these flexible leather shoes have graced fashionable feet for decades, on and off the soccer field. Most of our testers found them comfortable, but some people aren’t fans of their tall, rigid heel tabs.

Adidas Samba OG Shoes are as enduring as they are on-trend. Although they’ve become fashion fixtures in recent years, these leather sneakers can trace their origins all the way back to a German soccer pitch in 1950. Since then, Sambas have undergone numerous redesigns. But their DNA—that sleek silhouette, flexible support, and durable construction—has remained the same.

Sambas look great peeking out from beneath pooling trousers or rolled jeans; in warmer weather, we like to style them with crew socks and a breezy dress or shorts.

They’re chic. Sambas have a slender, low-profile shape, similar to our previous, much-beloved Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 pick (sadly, no longer available in the US). These shoes are versatile: sporty and casual yet still dainty enough to pair with a skirt. They have plenty of visual flair—the leather uppers are embellished on either side with the signature trio of Adidas stripes (usually in a contrasting color, though there is a white-on-white version ). The toes are reinforced with T-shaped suede overlays, and their grippy rubber soles range in color from buff to deep brown. Note that material construction can vary depending on the colorway you choose; some have nylon or mesh uppers rather than leather ones.

They’re built to last. The Sambas we tested felt pliant yet sturdy, with soft leather and secure stitching. Indeed, due to their reputation for durability , these shoes are a popular choice for soccer, skateboarding, and all-day pavement-pounding. Customers have reported their Sambas lasting anywhere from two to 10 years. And these sneakers usually ring up at around $100—not bad for a pair of well-built leather shoes.

Close-up of a person wearing a pair of Adidas Samba OG Shoes.

They’re light yet supportive. These shoes are flexible and lithe (weighing just 10 ounces each, in a women’s size 8); most of our testers praised their out-of-the-box comfort. And while they notably lack bulk, they’re still stable and supportive enough to keep you comfy for a full day on your feet. That’s thanks to their gently contoured insoles and rubber soles.

The heels may take some breaking in. The Sambas have tall, rigid heel tabs. One of our testers struggled (a lot) with them: They dug into the backs of her ankles, causing painful blisters. It’s hard to predict whether you’ll have this issue—we did find similar complaints online. If you fall into that camp, and you’re willing to make the effort, the internet is full of hacks for breaking in the heel tabs, suggesting everything from hair dryers and hammers to metal water bottles to help soften them up.

  • Some people may find the tall, structured heel tabs to be irritating (or even painful) to their ankles.
  • Shoe sizes: unisex/men’s 4 to 14; women’s 5 to 15
  • Sizing advice: These sneakers run true to size.
  • Color options: more than a dozen colors; various collaborations

A pair of white, low-top Nike Air Force 1 ’07 sneakers.

Nike Air Force 1 ’07 (low-top, unisex/men’s)

Hardtop haute.

These tried-and-true leather shoes have a storied history, both on the court and on the street. They're heavier than most sneakers, but they’re also comfortable, and they make a statement.

The chunky, confident profile. The ultra-bright leather. Ask any sneakerhead to name their essential shoes, and we guarantee that Nike Air Force 1 ’07s (low-top, men’s and women’s ) will be on that list. These sneakers command attention—without sacrificing wearability. They’re supportive, well cushioned, and durable, to boot. Even testers who weren’t initially drawn to their large-and-in-charge style had to admit it: There’s a reason the AF1s sit atop the pantheon of iconic white sneakers.

Pair your AF1s with a white T-shirt, dark jeans or joggers, and crew socks. And don’t forget to go down half a size; these shoes run notoriously large.

They have tons of cred. “The white-on-white Air Force 1 is by far the best shoe ever made,” said Alan Vinogradov, co-founder of the traveling sneaker convention Sneaker Con .

AF1s were born on the basketball court. The original high-top version launched in 1982, and it was embraced by some of the NBA’s biggest players, including Moses Malone of the Philadelphia 76ers. A year later, the low-top silhouette hit the streets, taking off as an emblem of hip-hop culture.

Despite the popularity of these shoes, Nike nearly discontinued all AF1s in 1984. Luckily, sneaker enthusiasts—spearheaded by a group of Baltimore retailers —convinced Nike to reissue the shoes. Since then, the design has seen hundreds of collabs and variations while remaining true to its roots.

They’re big and bold. AF1s have stocky, air-filled rubber soles, wide, perforated toe boxes, and prominent Swoosh branding. At first, some of our panelists—none of them die-hard Nike fans—struggled with the chunkier style. They quickly came around. “A little thick, a little loud, but I love them,” said one tester. He also told us this is the pair he gets the most compliments on: They stick out, in a good way.

Close-up of a person wearing a pair of white, low-top, Nike Air Force 1 ’07.

They’re structured on the outside, cradling on the inside. Sliding into a pair of AF1s is easy, thanks to their solid construction. We were able to put them on hands-free without a struggle, and we didn’t worry about creasing the leather as we wiggled our feet in. Inside, these sneakers have generous cushioning and supportive foam insoles. And their collars are well padded, so they didn’t chafe or cause blistering on our heels.

AF1s are the heaviest of our picks (weighing 13.8 ounces each, in a women’s size 7½), but due to their ankle-hugging design, they stayed snugly on our feet as we walked. Some panelists found them a bit too hefty. “They felt almost boot-like out of the box—stiff, structured, and kind of tight—especially around the very tops of my ankle bones,” one panelist remarked. “But the sensation is of being squeezed rather than rubbed.” If this bothers you, try leaving the top eyelets (the upper holes through which the laces are threaded) unlaced during the break-in period.

They’re tough. AF1s offer a lot of shoe for the price. They have a hardy build and solid craftsmanship, so if you take good care of them , AF1s should last season after season. “They’ve held up well over the past couple of years,” one staffer confirmed. Another reported that after five years of occasional wear, their AF1s remained perfectly intact, with only minimal creasing.

  • These shoes may be too hefty for some people’s liking.
  • Shoe sizes: unisex/men’s 5 to 18 ; women’s 5 to 12
  • Sizing advice: These shoes run large and have a relatively wide toe box; Nike recommends buying half a size down.
  • Color options: more than a dozen colors; various collaborations; create your own design

A pair of Reebok Club C 85 Vintage Shoes.

Reebok Club C 85 Vintage Shoes (unisex)

Tennis club cool.

These well-priced leather tennis shoes serve up loads of old-school style. Their lightweight foam padding and delightful terry lining make them comfy for casual wear, but they don’t offer much arch support—and they might be too narrow for some feet.

There’s no shortage of ’80s- and ’90s-inspired sneakers out there—the trick is finding the ones that deliver just the right amount of nostalgia. The Reebok Club C 85 Vintage Shoes ace that challenge. With their worn-in, off-white hue and retro styling, these slim kicks recall tennis attire of yesteryear, but their simple, low-profile shape keeps them feeling current. Plus, they’re sturdy, light, and modestly priced for a pair of leather sneakers.

Wear Club Cs with vintage jeans and an easy button-up , or take a cue from their sporty heritage and opt for a tennis skirt.

They’re serving 1980s sports-club vibes. Club C sneakers—the ‘C’ is for Champion—first arrived on the tennis scene in 1985, and their unfussy, low-cut silhouette embodies the sport’s preppy-chic aesthetic.

We tested the “Vintage” version of these sneakers, which features yellowed rubber soles and cream-colored leather uppers punctuated by green Reebok branding. This seasoned color scheme proved to be super-wearable, and also more scuff-resistant than pure white. But if you prefer, the Club Cs are also available in a true, bright white version , which cost around $15 less; unlike the “Vintage” Club Cs, these don’t have a terry lining, and the leather isn’t quite as soft.

They’re delightfully tactile. OK, so we didn’t exactly expect to fall in love with these sneakers’ terry cloth lining. And yet, there’s something undeniably appealing about the soft, spongey, towel-like fabric that covers their interiors, including the collars, heels, and flexible foam tongues. Of all the things to remark on about Club Cs, this terry bonus—the sweatband for your ankles that you never knew you wanted—received the most positive feedback.

Close-up wearingReebok Club C 85 Vintage Shoes.

They’re comfortable, for fashion sneakers. Club Cs have sturdy foam insoles and ultra-light, shock-absorbing EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) midsoles. One tester who has low arches particularly enjoyed these sneakers' flat footbeds: “They’re like the shoe equivalent of a firm mattress.”

We felt fleet-footed in these lightweight sneakers (each one weighs just 9.6 ounces, in a women’s size 8), and we happily sauntered around town in them all day. They’re cushier than, say, our Converse Chuck Taylors pick, though they’re not as plush or supportive as our Air Force 1 or Nike Air Max 90 picks. But performance shoes they are not. As one tester put it, “I can’t believe that people used to play tennis in these.”

They're a lot of bang for your buck. At under $100, Club Cs are one of our least expensive picks (only the canvas Chuck Taylors are cheaper). We were happy to discover that their quality is excellent, too: the leather is soft and supple, the rubber soles are sturdy, and the overlays and decorative stitching are well-executed.

  • Club Cs have a narrow toe box, and they may not be comfy for people with wide feet.
  • These shoes don’t have much arch support.
  • Shoe sizes: unisex/men’s 3½ to 15; women’s 5 to 16½
  • Sizing advice: These shoes run true to size but are notably narrow; if you have wider feet, consider buying half a size larger than your usual size.
  • Color options: five unisex/men’s colors (Vintage); six women’s colors (Vintage); six classic colors

A pair of white Greats The Royale 2.0 sneakers.

Greats The Royale 2.0 (men's)

Sophisticated sneakers.

Made from supple full-grain leather, these minimalist sneakers feel broken-in and soft from Day One. They’re the most polished style we recommend—and the most expensive.

white travel sneakers

Greats The Royale 2.0 (women's)

Robust yet refined, Greats The Royale 2.0 ( men’s and women’s ) are versatile and well-made full-grain leather sneakers. While some all-leather shoes are a beast to break in, these are soft and supple right out of the box.

Their minimal aesthetic plays nice with any casual outfit, and this shoe can also hold its own with slacks, wide-legged pants, or a flowy dress. Keep in mind: If you wear men’s sizes, you’ll want to size down half a size; the women’s version runs true to size.

They’re sleek, not stuffy. The clean-lined Royale 2.0s are quietly on point. Panelists described their simple shape and smooth, full-grain leather as “classy” and “really nice.” Contrasting tan interiors, white tack stitching on the upper panels, and unobtrusive gold foil branding add subtle visual pops.

Of course, there are plenty of minimalist white leather sneakers to choose from—the Common Projects Original Achilles Sneakers are among the most popular and oft-imitated. (We chose not to test the Common Projects sneakers for this guide, since—at $400—they exceeded our price cap.) But Royale 2.0s stand out from the crowd. They have a slightly beefy, streetwear-inspired silhouette, lending them a laid-back cool that other, dressier sneakers of this ilk lack.

They’re comfy from the get-go. All-leather shoes can be stiff and unforgiving at first. Not so the Royale 2.0s: Their leather is soft and inviting from the start, and it gets even more flexible with wear. These sneakers offer a notable improvement in comfort over the original version of The Royale shoes (our former pick), which required a grueling break-in period.

We easily pounded miles of pavement in these shoes. They have supportive, well-cushioned insoles and ample padding around the collars. Perforations in the leather offer a bit of ventilation—but be sure to pair these shoes with socks to avoid slippery, swampy feet (and potential blisters).

Because of their substantial construction, these sneakers are on the heavier side (weighing 13 ounces each, in women’s size 8); this is our second-heftiest pick, after the Air Force 1s . The Royale 2.0s are lighter than the original Royales, though—by 0.4 ounces—and they don’t feel too clunky on your feet.

They’re pricey, but worth it. Although these are the most expensive of our picks (at close to $200), they’re a good value for this style of handcrafted, full-grain leather sneakers. (They’re half the price of the aforementioned Common Projects sneakers.) And due to their high-quality materials and construction, the Royale 2.0s should hold up to years of regular wear.

Close-up of a person wearing a pair of Greats The Royale 2.0 white sneakers.

They require some upkeep. Since these sneakers are made from full-grain leather, they’re prone to developing creases. To minimize the creasing, the uppers should be cleaned properly ; we recommend gently buffing out dirt with a Magic Eraser .

  • The all-leather construction can make feet hot and sweaty.
  • This is our priciest pick.
  • Full-grain leather is prone to creasing and requires maintenance.
  • Shoe sizes: men’s 7 to 22 ; women’s 6 to 10
  • Sizing advice: In men’s sizes, this shoe runs large; the company recommends buying half a size smaller than your usual men’s size. In women’s sizes this shoe runs true to size.
  • Color options: 13 in men’s; six in women’s

A pair of white Nike Air Max 90 sneakers.

Nike Air Max 90 (men’s)

Cloud-like comfort.

These mesh and leather sneakers are the comfiest ones we tested, with soft, breathable uppers and air-filled soles that cushion your every step. They feel blissfully breezy and bouncy, but mesh can be harder to keep clean than other materials—particularly when it’s white.

white travel sneakers

Nike Air Max 90 (women’s)

These mesh-and-leather sneakers are the comfiest ones we tested, with soft, breathable uppers and air-filled soles that cushion your every step. They feel blissfully breezy and bouncy, but mesh can be harder to keep clean than other materials—particularly when it’s white.

Nike Air Max 90s ( men’s and women’s ) were originally conceived—decades ago—as running shoes. But these mesh-and-leather sneakers—arguably the best-loved members of the sprawling Air Max family —were quickly adopted as streetwear and lifestyle staples. As soon as we put them on, we understood why: They’re wonderfully cushioned, breathable (even in hotter temperatures), and oddly attractive.

Their athletic profile fits right in with casual sweats or a pleated mini; for an attention-grabbing look, pair these dazzling monochromatic sneakers with an all-white ensemble.

They’re airy (literally). As the name implies, Air Max 90s arrived on the scene around 1990—about three years after the original Air Max 1s debuted with literal windows into their air-filled soles (the Nike Air cushioning technology for which the brand has become famous). Air Max 90s upped the ante even further—their soles contained more air than those of their predecessors, making them feel springier underfoot. Over 30 years later, they’re still among the cushiest sneakers we’ve found.

They’re oh-so-comfy—and well ventilated, too. Air Max 90s have a well-deserved reputation for comfort . Those air-filled rubber soles are stable and shock-absorbing, with waffle-iron-inspired traction for extra grip. Cloud-like cushioning surrounds the low collars and tongues, and the removable insoles have ample arch support. Wirecutter supervising style editor Ingela Ratledge Amundson reported, “When I’m forced to leave the house before morning coffee, these are the sneakers I reach for, because I know they’ll put an artificial spring in my step.”

Despite their generous soles and padding, Air Max 90s weigh only 11.3 ounces each (in a women’s size 8). They’re our only pick with breathable mesh uppers, so they’re an excellent choice for warm, active days; they’re also moisture-wicking and quick-drying. And because they’re both lightweight and supremely supportive, they make a terrific option for travel (bring on the sightseeing).

Close-up of a person wearing a pair of white Nike Air Max 90 sneakers.

They have a striking profile. If you’re peering down at them from overhead, Air Max 90s have a fairly standard, running-inspired shape, with a wide forefoot that tapers at the toe. From the side, their cool-factor comes into focus. The uppers are a patchwork of mesh panels, leather overlays, and textured TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) accents, configured to give the impression of forward momentum. And their famously lofty heels—which showcase those substantial units of air in wave-like swells—add about 1½ inches of extra height (welcome, if you’re looking for some lift).

Panelists found Air Max 90s surprisingly versatile and flattering. “I’m used to my feet looking like boats in most sneakers, especially white ones,” remarked one tester, who tried them in a women’s 12. “But in these, my feet came across as—dare I even say it?—almost petite.”

They need some TLC. Mesh confers lots of benefits; easy upkeep isn’t one of ’em. Because of their material, these shoes show stains easily, and can be tough to clean. If you want white Air Max 90s to look good for the long haul, they’ll need gentle but thorough scrubbing .

One of our testers received a new pair of Air Max 90s that had some yellowish stains around the borders of the mesh (possibly from misplaced glue)—presumably a quality-control oversight. Should you encounter a similar issue, these shoes have a 60-day return window when purchased directly from Nike.

  • Mesh uppers can be trickier to clean than materials like leather and canvas.
  • They're pricey.
  • Shoe sizes: men’s 6 to 15 ; women’s 5 to 12
  • Sizing advice: These shoes run true to size.

If you want cute canvas sneakers (that aren’t Chuck Taylors): The Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneakers (men’s, women’s) —a former pick in this guide—are simple, versatile, and stylish. “They’re sporty but cute, practical, and attractive, regardless of what you’re wearing,” enthused one tester. Cotu Classics are made from a nubbier fabric than our top canvas pick, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars , and they’re noticeably heavier (by about 3½ ounces per shoe). They also expose more ankle and have shorter, rounder toe boxes, which some testers preferred; they shorten your feet visually rather than elongating them, like Chucks. But Chuck Taylors are way cushier (yep, you read that right). The Cotu Classics have especially thin, unforgiving insoles, so they’re not particularly comfortable for all-day wear.

Our six favorite pairs of white sneakers, shown side by side.

On our quest to find the finest white sneakers , we left no shoe unturned, scouring editorial and customer reviews, sneakerhead forums, brick-and-mortar stores, and online retailers.

For the purposes of this guide, we focused on lifestyle sneakers (versus shoes intended specifically for athletic performance). And to keep the scope manageable, we limited the pool to low-top pairs.

Guided by these parameters, in 2019 we researched 79 pairs of men’s, women’s, and unisex shoes, and we settled on 22 to test. In 2024, we considered a further 31 pairs, and we tested another eight.

Throughout, we weighed the following criteria:

  • Aesthetics: We wanted attractive low-top sneakers—in various materials and styles, to suit a range of tastes—with enduring appeal.
  • Comfort: The objective was to find sneakers that felt good right out of the box. We sought shoes that would fit well and be comfortable for walking and light activity. We also took note of cushioning and arch support, as well as any literal pain points, such as rubbing or blistering.
  • Quality: We looked for indicators of longevity and craftsmanship—like uniform stitching, neat overlays, and durable materials—and appreciated special design touches. We also considered customer reviews and long-term-testing feedback from staffers.
  • Availability: All of the shoes we recommend are perennial models sold by major retailers, in a standard range of women’s and men’s or unisex sizes.
  • Price: Though we entertained some pricier options, we decided it’s possible to find a top-notch pair of white sneakers for $200, usually less. Our picks range in price from around $60 to $190 .

For the initial round of testing, the author of this guide ordered shoes according to the manufacturers’ sizing charts and wore each pair for at least a few hours (some for much longer). Any sneakers that were uncomfortable, unsightly, or poorly made were dismissed.

The remaining contenders were additionally tested by a panel of Wirecutter staffers. In 2019, three testers (women’s size 8, men’s size 11, and men’s size 13) put the finalists through their paces; in 2024, two Wirecutter editors (women’s size 8 and women’s 12) did the honors. Testers assessed the sneakers for style, fit, comfort, and overall performance.

Where applicable, we’ve also included the input from other Wirecutter staffers and testers, many of whom have been wearing these picks for years.

Canvas sneakers

The canvas Bensimon Lace-Up Tennis Shoes ( men’s , women’s ) have a rounded rubber toe that gives them an oddly duck-like silhouette. We found them to be uncomfortable, and their flexible soles made us worry that they’d wear out quickly.

At first glance, the Converse Chuck 70 (unisex) sneakers could pass for our Chuck Taylor pick. There are differences, though: The Chuck 70s have yellowed midsoles and toe caps, a chunkier profile, and substantially cushier insoles. We prefer the look of regular Chucks, which are also $25 cheaper. But if you want more padding, these shoes are worth considering.

We tried the lace-up version of the Keds Champion Originals (women’s) and the Vans Old Skool Canvas Shoe (unisex) . Both pairs are long-standing classics with loyal, ever-renewing fanbases. Our testers had fit issues with these shoes—their feet hung over the sides, stretching out the canvas. The Keds sneakers come in wide and extra-wide sizes, and the Vans shoes come in a wide option. So with that in mind, we may consider retesting these in the future.

Testers deemed the Vans Classic Slip-On Shoe (unisex) uncomfortably tight and scratchy.

Leather sneakers

Even when we sized up, the shell-toed Adidas Superstar Shoes (unisex) were too tight and constricting.

You’d be forgiven for mistaking Adidas Gazelle Shoes (unisex) for our similar-looking pick, the Adidas Samba OG Shoes . Compared with their cousins, the Gazelles have blockier soles and wider, more-rounded toes, which aren’t quite as elegant or flattering. But they have a slightly lower and more padded heel tab, so people who find the Sambas’ heel tabs uncomfortable might like these better. The Puma Palermo Leather Sneakers ( men’s , women’s ) also have a Samba-adjacent vibe, with a T-toe design; we found them stiff and less graceful than the lean, sinuous Sambas.

The refined, minimalist Koio Capri sneakers ( men’s , women’s ) have a dressier look than the Greats The Royale 2.0 sneakers (which are in the same vein). And they feel more like dress shoes, too (read: stiff and unforgiving). The Koios also cost nearly $60 more.

The chunky, ’90s-throwback New Balance 550 (unisex) sneakers have enjoyed a fashion renaissance in the past several years. Unfortunately, they were stiff around the forefoot and bulky at the collar, and our feet ached after a day of walking in them.

The Nike Blazer Mid ’77 sneakers ( men’s , women’s ) are basketball classics—as well as a Wirecutter staff favorite —and they’re the only mid-top pair that we tested. While they’re undoubtedly cool, the stiff leather collars made them feel like orthopedic ankle boots: awkward and nearly immobilizing.

Testers found the leather uppers of the tennis-inspired Nike Killshot 2 Leather sneakers ( unisex , women’s ) uncomfortably thick.

The Veja Campo ChromeFree Leather (unisex) sneakers look good—as well they should, since they run close to $200. But they creased easily and didn’t feel nearly as supple as our all-leather Greats Royale 2.0 pick. They also don’t have much padding or support; our feet ached after a few hours of wearing them. And one tester, who ordered them in her usual size (women’s 12), said they ran short.

Faux leather sneakers

Sneakerheads love Adidas Stan Smith Shoes ( men’s , women’s ); we’ve taken some heat over the years for not making them a pick here (sorry!). We love them too—aesthetically—but, sadly, none of our testers found them especially comfortable. They were tight around the bridges and arches, and even with socks, the rigidly curved tongues rubbed some panelists’ feet raw.

The pricey Veja V-10 (unisex) lace-up sneakers—made from vegan leather with rubber soles—have tongues that aren’t burnished at the edges, causing them to chafe uncomfortably against feet.

Reebok Club C 85

Reebok Club C 85

Reebok has had a resurgence in the past few years, and its Club C 85 sneakers are leading the charge. Playing off classic tennis shoes, these perforated leather low-tops work with any comfy-chic outfit and offer full-foot support so you can wear them all day long.

“Ever since I bought myself a pair of Reebok Club Cs during a Black Friday sale, all other white sneakers have been collecting dust in my closet,” says Anna Moeslein , deputy editor at Glamour. “These have carried me through fall, winter, spring, and now summer, because they really are that good. It’s because they’re so versatile—they sit perfectly just below the ankle, which makes them work with just about any pants style, cropped or otherwise, as well as skirts, dresses, and shorts.” ( Glamour contributor Andrea Navarro is also a big fan.)

Sporty kicks are at the top of the heap for 2024, and Salomon sneakers reign supreme right now. Superga 2750 Cotu Classic

Superga 2750 Cotu Classic

Beloved by Kate Middleton , the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic, which she’s worn on repeat over the past few years. “Superga’s canvas shoes are so easy to clean, which is great, because they’re also so comfy you’ll want to wear them every day,” Glamour ’s Navarro says. “I wear mine with everything from jeans to dresses.” They’re endlessly versatile and run a bit wider than Keds and Converse if your feet need the extra room. Plus, the lightweight canvas makes it an excellent summer sneaker .

  • Material: Canvas
  • Sizes: 5–11.5
  • Styling tip: Because of their low-top silhouette, these sneakers are especially easy to wear with straight-leg jeans that hit right at or just below the ankle.

Best Canvas Sneakers: P.F. Flyers Center Lo Classic

P.F. Flyers Center Lo Classic

P.F. Flyers Center Lo Classic

P.F. Flyers

One of the very first American sneaker brands, P.F. Flyers just underwent a major brand refresh—but thankfully, the shoes are just as reliable (and affordable) as always. This model was introduced in 1944, and it’s still holding its own in 2024. “These sneakers got me through my first-ever Coachella unscathed, pulling a 12-hour day with ease,” says Glamour shopping editor Jake Henry Smith . “I didn’t slip once, and I loved the way the white canvas aged during the festival. (Snow-white sneakers are boring.) While I would have preferred more padding out of the box, my feet were completely fine after more than 10 hours at Coachella and Revolve Festival. I might opt for insoles next time, but as far as music festival shoes go, these are A1.”

  • Sizes: 5.5–17.5
  • Durability: Fair
  • Styling tip: We love the look of crew or above-the-ankle socks with white sneakers, and this pair works especially well with that pairing. Try them with jean shorts to show off your favorite socks.

Best Leather Sneakers: Tory Burch Howell Court

Tory Burch Howell Court

Tory Burch Howell Court

Like in the case of its ever-so-popular designer bags , Tory Burch sneakers are instantly recognizable, but not too in-your-face. We’re longtime fans of the Howell sneaker, which comes in a long list of colors and patterns, including this delicious white leather upper, all of which serve major Billie Jean King energy. They’re a hit among online reviewers, too, who praise their endless versatility and comfortable design.

  • Sizes: 5–12
  • Styling tip: These kicks are a true blank canvas, so wear them with anything. On a grocery run, try black leggings paired with a loose T-shirt; on dressier occasions, try overalls or maxiskirts .

Best High-Top Sneakers: Nike Blazer Mid ’77

Nike Blazer Mid 77

Nike Blazer Mid ’77

These Nike classics come in two heights, but we especially love the high-top option paired with skirts and cropped jeans. “I wear my Nike Blazers every day,” says Glamour contributor Brigitt Earley . “I'm entirely obsessed with them because they go with everything—jeans or leggings—and offer such a clean look that’s casual yet cool. I typically pair them with crew socks. My favorites are a pair that has a little embroidered heart on them—it’s the cutest combo. Pro tip: These shoes can be tricky to get on. If you don’t have the patience for that, swapping out the laces for an elastic pair really helps. Now I can slip them right on.”

  • Material: Leather, suede
  • Styling tip: Wear them with crew socks that just poke out of the top; white and black look cleanest, but don’t be afraid to try other colors or patterns.

Best Low-Top Sneakers: Tretorn Nylite Plus

Tretorn Nylite Plus

Tretorn Nylite Plus

Canvas sneakers will never go out of style, and Tretorn’s time-honored take is a no-fail pair of shoes for running errands or grabbing a bite to eat. (They also have just enough personality to wear with dresses and statement trousers.) “Nylites have been my go-to sneakers for the better part of a decade now—and they’ve proven to be completely trend-proof, even as my style has changed drastically around them,” Glamour ’s Smith says. “Each pair features a grippy rubber sole and breathable canvas uppers, and they last about a year before I have to replace them. Since there’s no toe cap, they’re hard to keep clean, especially during rainy weather, but they’re so much cooler with a layer of grime, anyway.”

  • Styling tip: Lean into the retro vibes with a sweatshirt and leggings or pair these timeless kicks with a sundress.

Best Sneakers for Travel: Kizik Athens

Kizik Milan

The brand with the three stripes has a range of popular white sneakers, from the puffed-up Superstars to the designer-approved Stan Smiths—but you can’t go wrong with a pair of Sambas, which are more popular than ever right now. “I normally don’t go for super-flat sneakers because of my height, but I can’t help but love the retro look of Sambas and have to credit Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid for making them look impossibly cool with just jeans and a T-shirt ,” says Talia Abbas , a Glamour contributor and senior commerce editor at Vogue. “I wouldn’t say these are my 10,000-step sneakers, but they’re comfy enough for shorter walks or commuting to work.” (Pro tip: Order one size down from your usual if you buy a men’s pair.)

New Balance

One of New Balance’s most iconic silhouettes, this is a dad sneaker with some serious street cred. “These are probably my most-worn shoes,” says Glamour beauty editor Danielle Sinay , who prides herself on her collection of cute yet comfy footwear. They’re tricked out with cushy, supportive midsoles and durable, shock-absorbing outsoles, ensuring that every step is as comfortable as possible. The look leans a little maximalist and sporty, but that shouldn’t be an issue if you’re okay with making a bit of a statement.

These Hokas are super-supportive to wear on my weekend runs—no blisters or uncomfortable friction,” says Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle . “They have plenty of cushion for shock absorption, they’re super-lightweight, and they give me a nice bounce when I walk in them. Most Comfortable Sneakers: Birkenstock Bend

Birkenstock Bend Sneakers

What is the most comfortable shoe? According to our research, it’s Birkenstock’s underrated sneakers. If you love the support you get form your Arizona slides or Boston clogs , then these wide, supportive sneakers will be right up your alley. “I love these Birkenstock sneakers,” says Pamela Russo, senior vice president of consumer revenue at Condé Nast. Like the brand’s other wide-foot-friendly shoes, “they are comfortable, provide nice arch support, and look decent.” (Squint and they look almost like the Common Projects Original Achilles , but for a mere fraction of their near-$500 price tag.) She notes that these unisex gems are also some of the best white sneakers for men, and we’ve found that Birks make great shoes for pregnancy .

Nike Air Force 1 ’07

In need of a wear-everywhere shoe with some built-in street cred and arch support ? We love Nike’s (arguably) most iconic sneaker. “This silhouette will never truly go out of style, whether I’m pairing mine with sweatpants or a full suit,” Smith says. “I have a few gripes—the break-in period lasts a while and the wide toe box creases unless you add extra hardware—but you can’t do much better when you’re in the market for all-white leather sneakers that last forever.” On top of going with everything, they have a cushioned heel tab and comfortable insoles to accommodate hours of walking—and they hold up well through drizzle and can easily be wiped clean.

  • Styling tip: Air Forces famously look great with anything, but we think they’re best with light-wash denim, whether it’s in the form of jeans, shorts, or skirts.

This list wouldn’t be complete without these machine-washable wool sneakers, which are ubiquitous on either coast. (Walk around New York for a few minutes and you’ll probably spot several.) In our Allbirds review , Glamour contributor Halie LeSavage says that they’re “supportive enough for all-day wear,” meaning they’re ideal for anyone who’s constantly on their feet, whether that’s at a hospital or an office. Best of all? “You can forget to wear socks and make it through the day without sweaty swamp feet.” Sold.

Best Sneakers for Wide Feet: New Balance 577v1

New Balance 577v1

New Balance 577v1

These New Balance kicks come in a whopping four widths, including both wide and extra wide. “I have very wide feet, which limits my choice of footwear, so I’m incredibly loyal to New Balance,” says Talley Sue Hohlfeld , Glamour ’s copy director. “The 577s are classic-looking and comfortable for everything I do (now that I’ve stopped jogging). They have enough curve to the sole to provide support for walking. But they’re sedate, which is what I want in my sneakers. I’m on my seventh pair, I think—when the sole gets worn, I go online and search for the best price, and the replacements come in the mail. That’s how much I trust them. Then I rotate the old pair into the ‘painting clothes’ bin.” The retro, sporty look means they’re guaranteed to look good with just about anything, including low-key black leggings.

Converse high-tops are synonymous with “classic white sneakers” at this point, and they’re one of the few styles that get everyday wear from celebs both off-duty ( Bella Hadid ) and on the red carpet ( Millie Bobby Brown ). “This is the pair I reach for when I need something comfortable enough to walk miles in,” says Glamour commerce director Brie Schwartz . And that’s not all: “These attention-grabbing Comme des Garçon Play high-tops are the perfect affordable collab where edgy fashion design meets the perennial American youth brand,” says Glamour visuals director Kathryne Hall . “Wearing them makes me feel both like I’m back in high school in 1994 and part of the current cool-kid club.” You’ll be unstoppable once those canvas uppers get a little beat up.

When you can’t be bothered with laces, there’s one obvious choice: Vans. “How much do I love Vans slip-ons? Let me count the ways. These have been my staple sneakers since I was a teenager,” says Chantal Waldholz , Glamour ’s senior global director of audience development, social media, and analytics. “Not only are they comfortable, but they’re stylish and practically go with everything . I’ve worn them with jeans, shorts, dresses, and even to a wedding (well, I changed into them after I showed up in sandals, but that still counts in my book). There’s a reason why they stand the test of the time—Vans is a company that exudes cool and authenticity. To quote Taylor Swift, they never go out of style.”

“Everyone should have court sneakers in their rotation since they’re so easy to wear,” Glamour ’s Smith says. “I love this pair from Cole Haan—a trendy brand that actually delivers on its promise of high-quality leather—because it’s a little busier than your usual court kicks. Design details like zigzag leather, quilted stitching, and slightly contrasting suede make these feel truly special. My one complaint: I wish the branding were a little less noticeable.”

  • Styling tip: The right sneakers can punch up even the most basic pieces in your collection, and these fit the bill. Wear them with a sweatsuit and you’ll feel like a tennis star, not a slob.

Best Off-White Sneakers: Puma Palermo FS

Puma Palermo FS

Puma Palermo FS

The power of off-white sneakers is simple: Because they’re not quite so stark as blindingly white options, there’s no rush to scuff them up. This pair has been popular for years now, and it recently got some love from Dua Lipa . “I lived in Pumas in high school and in college, I wore all my Pumas out during study abroad in Europe, so I was pleased to see these become trendy again this year thanks to an influx of celebs wearing them,” Glamour ’s Schwartz says. “These are versatile enough to wear with dresses, or jeans, which is what makes them a fab travel pick. The toe bed is a bit stiff, and requires breaking in, and the tongue sits high, so you’ll need to wear the right socks, but after awhile, they’ll start to mold to your feet.”

  • Sizes: 5.5–11

Swedish brand Axel Arigato was founded only in 2014, but these vintage-inspired kicks look like they’ve been on the market forever. Inspired by old-school models and made with recycled materials, these handsome shoes combine white and ivory leather for a stylish pairing that’ll stand the test of time. “Right now we are seeing clean and ’90s-inspired sneakers on the rise at Shopbop,” says Caroline Maguire , Shopbop’s fashion director. “This pair has a retro feel while still looking fresh and modern.” Pair yours with an oversized blazer and wide-leg jeans .

  • Material: “I recommend clients choose quality materials like leather or canvas for durability and easy cleaning,” says Stitch Fix’s Lloyd. Pay attention to the soles too; if they’re worn down, it’s time to look for a new pair, says Chanel Perkins, DPM , a board-certified podiatrist.
  • Design: “Make sure they have a cool shape and style, so when they eventually get scuffed up, they’re still wearable,” Maguire says. (Don’t sweat the scuffs, though: “Sometimes I think the more lived in the sneaker is, the better!” she says.) Lloyd agrees, recommending “timeless and versatile designs” that can be worn with plenty of different outfits.
  • Comfort: If you’re mostly walking, Dr. Perkins recommends shoes that offer stiff arch support and flexibility at the forefoot; if you’re running or jogging, look for the opposite. Cushioned soles, memory foam midsole, and thick outsoles are ideal shoe features for nurses shoes . Otherwise, kicks that are lightweight and made with breathable materials are great if you’re on your feet all day.
  • Price: Since sneakers must be replaced semifrequently, we love a relatively cheap pair. But that doesn’t mean a splurge is out of the question—as long as the design and the quality justify a higher price point. We split shoes into three categories: $ for pairs $100 or less; $$ for pairs $101 to $175; and $$$ for pairs over $175. (And don’t worry: We have plenty of sneaker promo codes to save you some money on your purchase.)

Picking the right pair of white sneakers comes down to understanding how you want to wear them. They need to fit in with your existing capsule wardrobe , whether that includes elevated basics, statement-making pieces, or a whole lot of athleisure. For example, retro, sporty sneakers like Reebok Club C 85s look great with tailored trousers and button-downs. If you’re hunting down a pair that looks good with dresses , pick something a little more minimalist, like Veja Campos. And anyone who wears gym-ready outfits most of the time should have a great pair of workout shoes on hand; we suggest the super-popular Lululemon Cityverse.

Cleaning white sneakers is often as easy as throwing them in the washing machine and dryer. If you have canvas shoes, they can be washed in the machine; if you have leather or suede shoes, stick to spot cleaning. We recommend using a toothbrush and dish soap to spot-clean stains like mud, grass, and spills—a little patience goes a long way.

For especially big jobs, you can also try to take your shoes to a professional, like a dry cleaner or a cobbler. With the right mix of cleaning agents and scrubbing, even dirty pairs can look brand-new. And remember: White sneakers often look best with at least a little scuffing and staining.

Styling white sneakers is as easy as throwing them on with whatever you’re wearing—they’re that versatile. But if you’d like to go a little more elevated, the experts have a few tips: “I like to style classic white sneakers with unexpected pairings,” says Caroline Maguire , Shopbop’s fashion director. “For example, I’ll throw a pair on with a white T-shirt , a black Sandy Liang tulle skirt, or a midi slip dress. I love the contrast and comfort all in one.” (Call it wrong-shoe theory .) Of course, you can also just throw on some Amazon leggings and call it a day—we promise you’ll look good.

Although the heydays of athleisure and normcore have come and gone, white sneakers are still super popular among everyone from office workers to creative directors. They go with everything—even more than black sneakers do—and feel timeless. And every sneaker silhouette, from high-tops to court sneakers, works well in white, a color that pairs well with blue jeans, black trousers, and floral dresses. White sneakers also show the world a little bit about who you are, whether it’s an explorer with tons of scuffs or someone a little neater with perfectly crisp kicks. You’ll see them in schoolrooms and boardrooms alike—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

10 Best Travel Sneakers To Make Your Feet Feel Like They’re Sitting in First Class

white travel sneakers

As exciting as it is to pack your bags, grab your passport, and jet off to your destination, travel takes its toll on your body —especially your feet. Whether you're sprinting to catch a train or nursing swollen ankles mid-flight, the right pair of travel sneakers makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

Not every sneaker cuts it when it comes to travel. While rigid tennis shoes are supportive, they aren't the easiest to haul around after you've arrived at your destination. Slip-on sneakers are great, but the wrong pair can wreak havoc on tender ankles and sensitive arches, if you're not careful.

  • Suzanne Levine, DPM , aesthetic podiatrist and podiatric foot surgeon

What to look for in a travel sneaker

Support, support, support.  "If you’re going to be walking a lot when you get to your destination, you’ll actually want to stretch your feet (and body) as you would before a run or workout as the first line of defense to prevent foot exhaustion," says board-certified podiatrist Dr. Suzanne Levine , D.P.M., RPT, PC. "Additionally, look for a travel sneaker that’s lightweight with a good sturdy heel, and well-cushioned with arch support to help absorb the natural impact on your feet." The extra cushion and arch support will also better distribute your body weight when you're standing waiting for baggage claim and allow you to propel forward with greater ease as you walk around.

{{post.sponsorText}}

It's also important to consider the shoe's material, especially if you want to avoid a case of having smelly feet. Dr. Levine recommends breathable fabrics like cotton, which is naturally absorbent and helps to wick away moisture from your body. However, if your vacay destination is located in a wet climate like southern Florida, a polyester-based material is a better option. Not only is it breathable, but it's extremely lightweight and dries quickly.

Pro tip from Dr. Levine: "Try and wear your new sneakers for a week or two before you embark on your travels. If you find an area of the sneaker that is rubbing, try adding a small piece of moleskin (any kind will work) to get some extra cushioning in the areas you need to ensure a comfortable journey."

Finding the perfect travel-friendly sneaker is hard work—which is why we've done it for you. Before you board your next flight, checkout these ridiculously comfortable kicks, guaranteed to keep tired feet happy wherever you roam. Below, 10 of the best sneakers for travel to wear on your next adventure .

What makes these shoes travel-friendly is how lightweight and stretchy they are, says Dr. Levine. The flexible knit upper fits securely on your foot while still giving you enough stretch for that ultimate Goldilocks fit. Not to mention, the shoes also have EVA inserts throughout the midsole for added cushion and flexibility as you walk.

Originally $65, now $55

At airport security), make sure the sneakers you choose are easy to take off and put back on,” says Dr. Levine. And these New Balance kicks do just that. The Fresh Foam is super soft and helps to reduce impact as your foot strikes tough roads, fields or any surface.

Are White Sneakers Versatile?

What I Iove most is that white sneakers are incredibly versatile for women. They go with literally EVERYTHING – jeans, skirts, dresses, shorts, exercise sets – you name it!

Their versatility is what makes white sneakers the perfect travel shoe. I am always struggling to keep my shoe choices to a minimum on trips so that I can pack in only my carry on bag. Having a white sneaker like these is my top travel essential since they match with so many outfits allowing me to pack less shoes. Shoes take up the most space in my luggage.

Are White Sneakers Still in Style?

White sneakers have very much been in style over the past several years. You will see them here in the United States and all over the world as well! I have noticed everyone wearing them as I’ve traveled throughout Europe and South America lately. Men and women alike where them with anything from jeans to shorts to dresses/skirts.

The Everyday White Sneakers

First up, my number one go to pair of shoes!

Soludos Ibiza Classic Leather

I have worn these Soludos shoes all over the world. Truly, I purchased them last summer for a trip to Greece, Egypt and Switzerland and they were perfect. I wore them with a dress seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza and with jeans/leggings as I explored Switzerland – even to the top of a mountain peak! They have made the trip to Chilean Patagonia with me and as I explored Rome while pregnant! They are super comfortable and still look great after several years of wear.

I’ve since taken them on more trips and wear them to work almost every day with dresses. So in conclusion, YES, I’m obsessed with this pair of white sneakers!

Size Note: Size up half a size! I didn’t listen to the reviews and had to exchange them. Learn from my mistakes. Sometimes, I find it helpful to order two sizes so I can compare them at the same time and return one that doesn’t work!

The Platform White Sneaker

Soludos ibiza platform.

An elevated look to the classic Ibiza sneaker, these Soludos platform ones will take your look to new levels (pun intended! 😉). They feature recycled laces, responsibly sourced leather, and hand stitching on the back tab.

I recently purchased this platform pair in the sand color and have to say they are SO comfortable . The platform provides extra support and the soles are well cushioned. I bought the sand color and it’s perfect for fall.

The Trendy White Sneakers

Veja womens campo sneaker.

Veja as a brand has been super popular in the past few years. Their shoes are sustainably manufactured with high quality recycled materials like organic cotton and sustainably sourced leather. Clearly, you can feel good about protecting the environment with this pair of shoes! Plus, they are super cute! So many of my friends have these and recommend them.

The Athleisure White Sneakers

Apl techbloom bliss sneakers.

APL is a hot brand right now and for good reason. I love how sleek these tennis shoes look. They are lightweight so perfect for light activity like traveling through airports. Since there are no laces, I feel like these look great with any outfit without looking too athletic. Bonus points because you can toss these in the washing machine and they come out looking new!

I’m so glad that I finally splurged on these and I’m loving them so far! I recently wore them on my babymoon around Europe in Copenhagen, Italy, and Switzerland! They were super comfortable and even better for pregnancy because I can slip them on easily. NOTE: I did size up to a 9 from my usual 8.5. This allowed a bit more room to wear socks with them.

Leisurely Tip: I found mine on sale for almost $100 off by googling “APL sneakers on sale”. I got mine at Dick’s Sporting Goods!

The Cute White Sneakers

Sam edelman ethyl sneaker.

Sam Edelman is one my favorite footwear brands. They make great shoes that last! I love this bright white pair for how simple and perfectly cute they are! Additionally, you can choose between regular or wide to find the best fit for you.

These Steve Madden shoes are great sneakers for travel especially when you are on the go since you don’t have to worry about laces. I actually have a black slip on pair and love them for winter to wear with black jeans or even spanx leggings!

The Nike White Sneakers for Travel

Nike women’s court royal tennis shoes.

You can never own too many pairs of Nikes so add these classic ones to your wardrobe next! I love the white swoosh mark against the white leather shoe! I have not seen many people wearing these around so I think it would be a great option to separate yourself from the super trendy options right now.

The Affordable Classic Sneakers

We’ve all worn Keds at some point, right?

Ked’s Women’s Champion Sneaker

white travel sneakers

I have owned a pair of Ked’s throughout every stage of life. In high school, I had a fabulous pale pink pair and now own a pair of solid white and the gold glittery ones, too! I wore them for miles walking around Paris a few summers ago and had zero complaints.

They are fully canvas with a rubber sole and are built to last. Importantly, they can be thrown in the washing machine easily so you’ll have these for years to come. They are priced well in my opinion so it’s easy to justify a refresh when you wear through them.

The Selena Gomez Approved Sneaker

Puma carina.

Selena Gomez was recently spotted wearing these PUMA sneakers in NYC. If this style icon likes them, then you know they must be worth checking out! Plus, they have over 20,000 5 star ratings on Amazon. The Carina sneakers feature an elevated platform and SoftFoam+ sockliner which provides extra cushioning for optimal comfort on long travel days. Inspired by California beach towns of the 80’s, you will be on trend in these white sneakers for travel days.

To sum it up, you can not go wrong adding a classic pair of white sneakers to your wardrobe. They are truly a timeless wardrobe staple that compliments so many outfits. Which pair will you choose for your next trip?

  • Why Trust TripSavvy

TripSavvy / Zackary Angeline

Whether you’re packing for a business trip or your annual vacation, space and weight are usually limited. One way to make the most of your luggage allowance is to carefully choose which shoes you take. A lightweight, comfortable pair that can fulfill several different functions (from providing support on your city walking tour or hiking excursion to looking good at dinner afterward) is ideal.

Our travel experts tested 22 of the best women’s shoes for your next adventure, rating each pair for comfort, fit, quality, and value, then choosing winners for a range of categories from “Best Sandals” to “Most Sustainable.”

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Knit textile upper, Cloudfoam midsole and outsole | Sustainability: Primegreen recycled materials

Superga Cotu Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Sizes: 5 to 15.5 | Materials: Cotton upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Mesh upper, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Recycled polyester, rubber, and bio-based foam

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: PET straps, EVA midsole, jute-infused rubber outsole | Sustainability: Straps made from recycled plastic bottles

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Sizes: 5 to 12 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Polyester straps, PU midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Vegan-friendly construction

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

TripSavvy / Erica Finamore

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

8 of the Best Travel Sneakers for Women (Tried & Tested!)

I wear sneakers all the time, including when I’m traveling (especially to Europe), so finding the perfect pair is crucial to me. Since I’m going on a lot of city breaks, I need shoes in which I can walk for hours, but I also want them to be stylish and durable. So after trying and testing all kinds of shoes over the years, here are 8 of the best travel sneakers for women.

Table of Contents

What I Am Looking for in a Women’s Travel Sneaker

Flexibility, support, lightweight, and comfort:  As I’ve mentioned, I need to know I can walk in them all day long (without having blisters and overly sore feet and back that will make me cry at the end of the day), so they need to tick all of these boxes.

Durability:  Yes, I’m addicted to sneakers, but that doesn’t mean I want to have to buy a new shoe every couple of months.

Style:  When I’m traveling, my sneakers are in full use, and I almost always wear them during the entire trip, including at the airport. That’s why I look for timeless, classic shoes that match all kinds of outfits, from jeans and a t-shirt to a fun mini dress.

Sustainability and vegan-friendliness:  I’m trying to be a more environmentally conscious and responsible person in general, so I love to find vegan and sustainable shoes.

Waterproof(ish):  If I’m traveling in winter , I’ll prefer wearing a boot, and if there’s a chance it’ll rain a bit ( in spring or fall), I’ll avoid wearing canvas sneakers.

Don’t forget to wear suitable socks and break in your new shoes! I can find the most comfortable sneakers for travel, but I always like to wear them a couple of times before going on a trip. Some use a hairdryer and other methods, which I don’t.

How to choose the best sneakers for travel

When buying sneakers for traveling, it is imperative that you choose a pair that is sturdy, comfortable, technology-integrated and has lots of reviews online to judge it best.

Below are some points to consider before making your final choice.

Consider where you are going to wear them

Sneakers that feel comfy on the concrete city streets might not be a practical choice for hiking in the uneven and muddy countryside.

Therefore, it is imperative to consider your travel destination when buying sneakers for travel.

Prioritize comfort

A slew of stylish sneakers is available today at an affordable price. They are attractive but are they comfortable? That is the question to ask yourself.

Whether you are going sightseeing or hiking, you want a pair that is comfortable and does not make your feet feel tired easily.

It’s no fun standing under Eiffel Tower in head-turners when your heels are covered in blisters.

The best sneakers for travel are comfortable on all kinds of terrain

Consider the weight and material

When finding the right pair of sneakers for traveling, choose the material that keeps the build of the shoe light.

The bulkier a footwear, the sooner you get tired, and the higher are the chances of getting sore feet.

On the other hand (feet?), lightweight sneakers for travel feel more comfortable even on long walks.

When looking for the best sneakers to travel, it is recommended not to prowl for sales or better deals .

Spend extra bucks on shoes that are dependable and hard-wearing.

Observe the material, sewing, quality, and technologies used in the soles.

Another indicator of durability is whether the sneakers are weather-proof. No one wants to get stuck indoors when on vacation just because it gets cloudy!

Versatility

Carrying multiple pairs of sneakers to match with your holiday outfits is neither practical nor feasible.

It is best to buy one that goes well with casuals and semi-casuals.

Good sneakers for travel do not make your feet feel tired easily

Set your budget

Always buy sneakers for travel from reputable brands.

But big tags can mean big prices, which is why planning a budget is a must.

While you do not have to spend hundreds on a pair, don’t hesitate to pay a little extra either. Buy sneakers that last a long time, and the extra price is worth added durability.

There is a great deal of thought that goes into buying the best sneakers for travel. This guide will help you to understand your requirements and choose a pair that meets them.

Traveling is great and becomes memorable when everything goes your way. You might not control the road quality of your travel destination or the weather that week.

But you can prepare for even the worst, prevent possible travel-dampening disasters by wearing weather-proof sneakers that are comfy, snug, and lightweight.

And that is what this blog will help you find – the best sneakers for travel.

Added to this travel blog is also a guide to choosing the best one out of them (and others). A 5-minute read will ensure an ultra-comfy trip for your feet.

As the writer behind this guide to the best white sneakers, it’s fascinating to see what the sneakerheads are chasing — from Air Force 1s to Stan Smiths. There’s a style for everyone these days, from easy slip-ons to trainers made cool by Shaolin monks. To find the very best white sneakers for women, I turned to in-the-know shoe obsessives and sneaker collectors about what they’re wearing, from understated low-tops to can’t-miss high-tops. I’ve also been trying some of these sneakers for myself — including taking them out on walks and cleaning them up with daubs of Tide To-Go . If you’re looking for more of the Strategist’s shoe coverage, we have guides to the best walking shoes and best running shoes .

Update on August 21, 2024: Updated prices and checked stock for all products.

What we’re looking for

In general, sneakers for women come in a size range of five to 11. Some brands will follow European sizing and not offer half-sizes (see French label Veja , which makes an appearance here). Others use unisex sizing, where the men’s size equivalent is listed alongside the women’s — this often means the shoes (a) come in a wider numerical range and (b) run slightly bigger. I listed all the sizing-related details I could for each pair, including wide and narrow options wherever available.

Two of the most popular materials in sneaker-making are leather and canvas. Leather is usually going to be longer-lasting, though scuffs can happen. Canvas is not the best to wear in the rain, but spot-cleaning the fabric can be easier. As shoemaker Lauren Brinkers explains, natural materials like cotton and linen are better for their breathability while synthetics like polyester hold more moisture, making them less airy by comparison. “As a general rule, the less synthetic materials, the better,” Brinkers says.

From a practicality standpoint, white sneakers can be a bit of a chore. The material they are made will determine the proper maintenance process, whether that’s a sneaker solution or a waterproof wax — especially if you hope to keep them as close to the box-fresh state they came in. (Like Alexa Chung , I subscribe to the philosophy that you should dirty them up a bit before your first wear.)

What counts as a well-designed sneaker will be different for anyone you ask. To judge the sneakers recommended to me, I searched for the standout details that might make you pick one over the other. Is there a large logo on a side that lets everyone know these are Nikes? Do they have a chunky, in-your-face sole or are they sleek and minimal, one step up from going barefoot? Whatever those special features are, I noted them.

The sneaker market is fraught with high price tags — the more fashion-forward, the more expensive (usually). So in coming up with this list, I focused on worth-it brands and made sure to include many budget-friendly kicks throughout. Every sneaker here is denoted as either $ (under $100), $$ (under $150), or $$$ (over $150).

Best white sneakers overall

Nike Air Force 1 ’07 Sneaker

Sizes: 5–13 with half-sizes | Material: Leather | Design: High-foam midsole, toe perforations | Price: $$

The iconic Air Force 1 is instantly recognizable with its clean lines, swoosh logo, and low-cut collar. These have a slight platform, unlike shier Supergas or basic Keds. They’re super comfortable, with plenty of cushioning and a breathable toebox with a sunburst of perforated holes for extra airflow. I can stand in AF1s for hours and walk thousands of steps without a problem. There’s a lightness about them; they never cause me to drag my feet or trip over myself. Because AF1s are a real do-it-all sneaker — and do the doing for just over $100 — they are my top pick.

They also take the superlative of “most mentioned,” a true feat considering I heard about close to 50 pairs of sneakers while reporting for this guide. “You can’t go wrong with Air Force 1s, and as a native New Yorker, I would feel embarrassed not to own a pair,” says stylist Christel Langué . Michelle Silva, co-founder of content-creation agency Con.cept , and Leigh Plessner, creative director of fine jewelry label Catbird , are fans too.

Best white low-top sneakers

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star

Sizes: 5–15 with unisex sizing and wide options | Material: Canvas | Design: Converse red outlining, All Star “license plate” in back | Price: $

Equally iconic are the Chuck Taylors from Converse, which date back to 1917 . I wore the low-tops throughout junior high and high school (though mine were covered in marker-made doodles). Even now, “there’s something inherently cool, nostalgic, and rebellious about Converse,” says Vogue vintage shopping columnist Jenny Walton . She’s had her Chucks since middle school and likes their low-profile, as she feels she’s too short to pull off high-tops.

But the high-top version is just as noteworthy and a favorite of artist Shantell Martin and senior editor Simone Kitchens . Another low-top Converse sneaker you can’t go wrong with is the Jack Purcell . “If they’re cool enough for Steve McQueen , they’re cool enough for me,” declares Dominique Porter, founder of the Glad Hours .

Best minimalist white sneakers

Adidas Stan Smith Shoes

Sizes: 5–11 with half-sizes | Material: Made from recyclables | Design: Perforated sides in three-striped logo pattern | Price: $$

Named after the tennis star , Stan Smiths are an archetype in the category of minimalist sneakers. It’s their endearing simplicity that’s made them “eternally popular,” according to stylist Jessica Cadmus . From an almost inconspicuous Adidas logo to a low-to-the-ground sole, Stan Smiths are meant to be wear-anywhere sneakers. Though Cadmus thinks they look best when spotless: “This is where a Magic Eraser comes in very, very handy,” she says. Strategist columnist Chris Black is another on-the-record fan, and so is designer Jonathan Adler . “I have a closet groaning, groaning, with couture footwear,” Adler says, “all ignored in favor of my beloved Stan Smiths.”

Best canvas white sneakers

Superga 2750 Canvas Cotu Sneakers

Sizes: 5–11 with half-sizes | Material: Canvas | Design: Small logo tag on one side | Price: $

The 2750s from Superga are more minimal than the Stan Smiths from Adidas — made from plain canvas that’s unlined on the inside, with a branding tag as their lone adornment. (Superga did start out on the tennis shoe scene after all, with its sneakers best described as spartan.) They are a sneaker you can get a lot of use out of. Photographer Louise Parker often chooses her Supergas over her Converse when she knows she’ll be walking around a lot, as these offer a bit more support and a comfortable cushioned footbed. Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo puts hers on when she doesn’t want to wear sandals or socks in the summertime. “They feel like slippers you can wear outside,” she says.

Best retro-style white sneakers

Adidas Superstar Shoes

Sizes: 5–11 with half-sizes | Material: Leather | Design: Shell toes, side stripes | Price: $$

To me, the Superstars from Adidas feels retro but not outdated — debuting in 1970, the low-tops were a hit on the basketball court and then the hip-hop scene . The sneakers are known for their distinctive shell-shaped toe and three-stripe trademark. There have been different versions of the Superstar over the decades, with this version close to the originals. “They are such a throwback,” says Nadine Abramcyk, co-founder of the salon Tenoverten . While she’s found them to be true-to-size, she suggests those with narrower feet wear the sneakers with a thicker sock , as they’re a little generous width-wise. And unlike some of the other styles on this list, the sneakers are available in both a “cloud white” and off-white — Abramcyk likes the latter because it’s not as stark.

Best white trainer-style sneakers

Feiyue Fe Lo 1920

Sizes: 4–12 | Material: Canvas | Design: Gum rubber sole, gripped sole for traction | Price: $

Strategist contributor Anna Fielding describes these canvas trainers from Chinese shoe brand Feiyue as “the kind of shoes that would skip across a suburban lawn in a Sofia Coppola film .” Joanna Fu , New York correspondent for Vogue Hong Kong (and former associate editor at Hypebeast ) says the remarkably affordable $35 shoes are the most comfortable pair she owns. That’s a big reason why the trainers have a following that includes martial-arts practitioners, parkour enthusiasts, and Shaolin monks. These are also good for weight-lifting and light-cardio , according to Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa — who counts them among the lightest, most packable workout shoes .

Best white high-top sneakers

Vans Sk8-Hi Core Classics

Sizes: 5–17.5 with unisex and wide sizing | Material: Canvas | Design: Triple-collar stitching, reinforced toe caps | Price: $

The SK8-His are everything a high-top should be — with a height that skims the hem of a cropped pant and a defined platform. If you’re wearing a high-top sneaker, you want to show them off — and these flaunt quilting-like stitching on the top. “These sneakers have been by my side since my freshman year of high school,” says artist Camille Lanham , noting that no matter how dirty they get, there’s “nothing a little bleach can’t do.” They are also much edgier than Converse high-tops, with a touch of “ delinquent teenager who frequents the mall, ” according to Strategist editor Maxine Builder . (Another Vans classic: checkered slip-ons, which come in tonal white-on-white or a plain white , too. Rony Vardi, founder of Catbird , wears hers until they have holes — and replaces them soon after every time. “They look effortlessly cool with just about everything you can think of,” she says. “Pretty much the perfect shoe.”)

Best white platform sneakers

Keds Triple Kick Canvas

Sizes: 5–11 with half-sizes | Material: Canvas | Design: One-inch platform | Price: $

Washington, D.C.–based organizer Nina Sarhan turns to platform Keds for protests that involve walking for hours . She says they have the right amount of cushion and arch support, with the platform and foam footbed helping to absorb the shock of each step. “Keds also have sturdy construction, so they’re great for miles on the roads,” she says. The rubber soles have traction, so Sarhan doesn’t slip on slippery crosswalks when it rains.

Best white leather sneakers

Veja V-10 Sneakers

Sizes: 35–42 (equivalent to US 5–11) | Material: Leather | Design: Chunky sole | Price: $$

Vejas have a storied history at the Strategist, but the V-10s are the most popular by far. For artist Maggie Meiners , their easy vibe makes them a staple, while Michelle Li , former fashion and beauty editor at Teen Vogue , calls them “supernova white shoes.” Langué says they “bring out my inner French gal.”

But the V-10s aren’t the only Vejas I heard about. Former Credo Beauty CEO Dawn Dobras goes for a velcro version . Stylist Erica Ball prefers the Esplars and pairs hers with dresses topped and moto jackets. “There’s something about the juxtaposition of the feminine mixed with the masculine,” she explains. I’m also currently trying another style from Veja, the newer V-90s , which are more retro-looking than the court-inspired V-10s, and will update accordingly once I’ve given them a true test.

Best (less-expensive) white leather sneakers

Reebok Club C 85 Vintage Sneakers

Sizes: 5–11 with half-sizes | Material: Leather | Design: Removable footbed, green vintage logos all over | Price:  $

Reebok’s Club C 85s are a more affordable and athletic-looking alternative to the Vejas. The Club C 85s have been a favorite with the Gen Z crowd ; “maybe I’m biased because I’m so in love with them, but I feel like it’s such an essential in everyone’s closet,” says digital creator Jasmine Farinas . While they haven’t quite reached the see-them-everywhere level of the AF1s, they’re definitely getting there. Brittany Nims, associate director of e-commerce partnerships and business development at Vox Media, bought her own Club C 85s after seeing them on this very site. She calls them the right combination of a dad-sneaker aesthetic and normcore, noting that “they’re perfectly average in the best way.” Nims admittedly considered looks above all else when choosing the shoes, but says her Club C 85s have molded to her feet and become more comfortable the more she has worn them — including on trips through California and Arkansas and around her neighborhood in Brooklyn. Strategist associate editor Jenna Milliner-Waddell also vouches for their comfort, saying they’re easy on her feet no matter how many miles she logs on her walks around New York City. And Vardi is another Reebok devotee, having come around to the brand as a “comfort-seeking mom.”

Best white slip-on sneakers

Rothy’s The Original Slip On Sneaker

Sizes: 5–13 with half sizes | Material: Knitted from recycled plastic bottles | Design: Brand’s signature stripe in the back | Price: $$

These slip-ons from Rothy’s are comfortable from the get-go, with little to no breaking in required. Knitted from a thread that’s spun from recycled plastic bottles , the sneakers are breathable and never make my feet sweat, whether I wear them with or without socks. They fit my wider feet well, without rubbing at the sides. These have the same selling point as all Rothy’s-branded shoes: They’re machine washable. I followed the instructions to wash mine, popping out the insoles and putting the shoes through a cold cycle, then letting them air-dry, and they came out looking fresh and bright. Some reviewers say they’ve had the shoes shrink, and though I haven’t had that problem, I’ll be keeping an eye on the sizing through more washings. That said, I think spot cleaning does the trick most of the time — removing most marks, from odd dirt smudges to an unexplainable blue blot.

Best (less expensive) white slip-on sneakers

Naturalizer Marianne Slip-On Sneaker

Sizes: 4–12 with half, wide, and narrow sizes | Material: Leather | Design: Perforated upper | Price:  $

Naturalizer’s Mariannes, which have appeared twice in our archives, are a cheaper alternative to the Rothy’s above. New York deputy editor Alexis Swerdloff packed these slip-ons on a trip to Portugal when she wanted slip-ons that were Vans-like but “totally innocuous (in that you wouldn’t be able to tell what brand they were, and would kind of blend in with any outfit).” The Mariannes delivered, plus they were cushioned enough to wear on cobblestone streets while sightseeing. These sneakers were also name-checked in our guide to best shoes for hard-to-find sizes , as they come in narrow and wide widths.

Best white step-in sneakers

Kizik Athens Sneaker

Sizes: 6–13 with half-sizes | Material: Made from a knitted fabric | Design: Hands-free with spring-back heel | Price: $$

Start-up Kizik specializes in hands-free shoes. I was impressed with how easy they are to put on: You really do just step right in. As author Diksha Basu explains, “There’s a little springy plastic part at the back that allows the shoe to fold and unfold as your foot enters.” They are well-suited for people who don’t have the physical ability to bend over to put on shoes, but they are also practical for just about anyone who’s always in a rush — the laces are already tied, and there’s no bunny-ears technique necessary. Plus the sneakers are comfortably cushioned with foam throughout the inside. Though ease is the big thing with these shoes, you’re getting a smart-looking pair as well. The cagelike frame in the back reminds me of the futuristic Nike Huaraches below.

Best chunky white sneakers

Nike Air Huarache Sneakers

Sizes: 5–12 | Material: Leather and neoprene | Design: Low-cut collar, perforations, logo on tongue | Price: $$

For a little more fashion-forward twist on the traditional dad sneaker, try Nike Huaraches. Elizabeth Tamkin, content director at Kule , likes that these are unisex (you can find men’s sizes here), meaning she can pair them with girlier dresses and tracksuits alike. The cushioned, thicker sole especially works well with her shorter figure, giving her a little height (and making these look cooler, too). Fair warning: Strategist senior editor Crystal Martin , who’s an avid Huarache wearer, recommends going up half a size, since these can be tight — she has a high instep, for reference. If you want more of a mix between chunky and minimalist, Theta Gallery director Jordan Barse offers another recommendation: These “dance” shoes that she’s worn on her art-handling adventures across Manhattan, whose slim-fitting arched design resembles Louis Vuitton’s Archlight .

Best white dad sneakers

HOKA Bondi Sneakers

Sizes: 5–12 with half sizes | Material: Mesh and memory foam | Design: Foam collar and midsole | Price: $$$

Hokas look like sneakers your dad would wear — and that’s part of the appeal. It’s all about comfort nowadays, and gone are the days of orthopedic shoes being uncool (support and stability are big — even President Biden has been seen sporting Hokas lately). Cookbook author and recipe developer Molly Baz was an early adopter of the brand , embracing it before the dad-shoe trend even began on the recommendation of an orthopedist. Meanwhile, Dazed executive editorial director Lynette Nylander reaches for the Bondis because she’s a purist, preferring her sneakers to be all white — unlike some of the others on our list, the logo sort of disappears into the design. The Bondis’ chunkiness even gives her a little boost of height (and confidence) as well, Nylander says.

31 Best Walking Shoes for Travel The Sneakers Boots and SlipOns Our Editors Always Pack

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveler writers and editors (as well as shopping writers from other Condé Nast titles) to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers , boots , flats , or sandals , we have recommendations for you. Below, more than 30 of our favorite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel—all cushy, supportive, and versatile—that will take you just about anywhere. Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for over three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later—they've made it through two NYC winters so far with minimal wear and tear.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Riding Boot, and Boot

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

Adidas Sambas have been around since 1950, but for the last year or so, they've been having a street style moment . Editorial assistant Kat Chen says she can't recommend them enough: “They are my ride or die. I got this newest pair last summer, but the ones I had before I wore for literally a decade until they finally wore down. These are the shoes that watched me grow up.”

“This is my first Kizik sneaker, but I’m just getting started on my collection,” commerce writer Paris Wilson says. Wilson appreciates the shoe's hands-free design that gives off the look of a sneaker with the ease of a slip-on shoe. The design is great for young kids, anyone who's always in a rush, and those who suffer from back pain or have limited mobility. “The Milan has a very chunky retro design,” Wilson says. “I have the Naval Academy colorway, which is easy to colorblock outfits with. The shoe comes in nylon or leather; I opted for nylon for a more breathable option in the summer, but I’m already looking to get a leather pair once the temperature drops. I’ve worn them to work, all across New York City and New Jersey , and recently took them to Maine. I haven’t complained once about my feet thanks to the ultra-cushioned foam insoles.”

Earlier this year, Lululemon launched its first casual sneaker, joining the brand's collection of running and performance shoes . Traveler contributor Rachel Chang put them to the test and had great things to say about the impressive outsole grip, cool silhouette, and comfortably wide toe box. “I wore them zig-zagging around New York City, running up and down subway stairs on icy days, and walking to a coffee shop in my hometown of Hoboken,” Chang says. “I've worn them on both warm sunny days and in freezing temperatures—good news: they kept my toes warm.”

white travel sneakers

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two and a half years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped last year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Sneaker

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to a light impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort. Associate editor Matt Ortile has worn them for at least eight years. “I buy a new pair roughly every 1.5 years and I rotate between nearly identical pairs,” Ortile says. As for where he's taken them? “Paris, always; exploring the ancient sites of Hegra in AlUla , Saudi Arabia; and walking through the jungles of Angaur, the southernmost state in Palau .”

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colors are easy to keep looking new.

Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction. Most recently, she wore them on a trip to Disney .

Hokas deserve every bit of hype, Kenny says. “I snagged these Clifton 9s with light runs and workouts in mind, and while they certainly are my everyday sneakers for the gym, they also have become my most-worn pair of walking shoes. They have a pretty thick sole, which might make you think they’re clunky or heavy, but all that extra cushioning makes them so comfortable to walk in for hours and they are surprisingly lightweight. They even fit nicely in the shoe compartment of my weekender bag and don’t weigh down my whole bag. I’ve worn them hiking in the Poconos , shopping in Montauk, and moving into a new apartment—all of which were days that earned me over 10,000 steps. Supportive, comfortable, and versatile, they are a must-pack for me on every type of trip.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, Running Shoe, and Sneaker

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

white travel sneakers

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you—two have made this list alone. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

white travel sneakers

Recommended by Calle, these On sneakers boast the brand's biggest layer of CloudTec ever for top-tier cushioning and energy return, as well as reduced muscle fatigue. “I’m not a runner by any means but I like to do a steady three-mile jog around Liberty State Park when the mood strikes,” Calle says. “I’ve been using old Nike sneakers for the last few years, but gave On shoes a try last year, and let me tell you, I didn’t know my feet could feel so much relief while running. I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

white travel sneakers

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three and a half years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

white travel sneakers

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

Comfortable sneakers are fairly easy to find; comfortable dress shoes, not so much. I've had these classic Cole Haan penny loafers for about six months, and they've proven to be a great work shoe, comfortable enough for my walk to and from the subway and to wear throughout the day thanks to a shock-absorbing footbed with layers of cushioning and built-in arch support. Since they're slip-ons, they'd be a nice airport shoe if you're looking to dress up a bit; I've worn them with slacks, jeans, and dresses, usually with a thin pair of ankle socks.

white travel sneakers

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

white travel sneakers

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

white travel sneakers

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who has called them “a permanent fixture on my packing list” for years. They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, and Sneaker

“I got my hands on these sleek loafers last fall and wore them non-stop to work, dinner parties, and any other situation when I wanted to look polished without putting on a heel,” Kenny says. “A good pair of loafers is much more practical to walk in for a special occasion and these are lighter and more packable than any pair I’ve owned in the past. They don’t pitch my feet and are easy to slip on and off.” Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black or teak herringbone, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, and Sandal

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which are the first shoe I pull out of my closet once the weather warms up in New York, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails. I've had them for a few years and they are by far the comfiest walking sandal I've worn—I've never gotten a blister from them.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Apparel

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

white travel sneakers

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “I’ve had these comfy slides from Rothy’s for a year now,” Kenny says. “From strolls on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore to grabbing gelato in Florence, they were my go-to sandal last summer. They’ve never given me blisters and the neutral beige shade matches all my summer clothing staples perfectly—linen pants, silky skirts, maxi dresses—you name it. I plan to pack them on all of my upcoming warm-weather trips that require a decent amount of walking while also still looking put together. A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's for the past three or so years, these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell wears them most regularly to the beach, but has also put them on for bike rides, long walks, and dinners in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

white travel sneakers

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Available in more than a dozen colors from lollipop red to boysenberry and dark emerald, there's a hue for every kind of traveler and outfit. All of Rothy's shoes are made out of recycled plastic, and cut using the same technology as Suav, meaning there's less waste throughout production. The shoes were recently redesigned to be even more comfortable thanks to a cushier insole and more spacious toebox. Of Rothy's flats , Florida–based travel writer Terry Ward says this: “They instantly upgrade any outfit; you can smush them up tight into a suitcase and they never lose their shape. Definitely worth the money—mine have held up for years.”

News, notes and thoughts:

4 April, 2011   / Free travel on new high-speed trains should allay fans' fears about long journey to Ekaterinburg - the most far-flung city on Russia's list of sites for 2018 World Cup. Let's hope the train will not break down in the middle of nowhere.

1 February, 2011   / Today is the 80th anniversary of the birth of Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russia. President Medvedev today unveiled a monument to Yeltsin in his home city Ekaterinburg. First one in Russia.

History of Yekaterinburg

Foundation of yekaterinburg.

The territory along the Iset River, which served as a convenient transport route from the Ural Mountains deep into Siberia, has long attracted settlers. The oldest of the currently discovered settlements on the territory of present Yekaterinburg was located next to the Palkinsky Stone Tents rock massif and dates back to the 6th millennium BC.

From the 7th-3rd centuries BC, ancient metallurgists who mastered the smelting of copper lived in this settlement. Copper figures of birds, animals, people, arrowheads, various household items were found here. Later they learned how to make iron products. All discovered settlements were destroyed as a result of fires, possibly during raids of the conquerors.

The territory occupied by present Yekaterinburg became part of Russia in the middle of the 17th century. At that time, it had practically no permanent population. The first Russian settlements were founded in the second half of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, the first ironworks were built here.

In the spring of 1723, by decree of Emperor Peter I, the construction of the largest iron-making plant in Russia began on the banks of the Iset River. Construction began on the initiative of Vasily Tatishchev (a prominent Russian statesman). He was supported by Georg Wilhelm de Gennin (a German-born Russian military officer and engineer), on the initiative of which the fortress plant was named Yekaterinburg in honor of Empress Catherine I (Yekaterina in Russian), the wife of Peter I.

More Historical Facts…

The historic birthday of Yekaterinburg is November 18, 1723. On this day, a test run of the plant equipment was carried out. Its main products included iron, cast iron, and copper. In 1725, the Yekaterinburg Mint began production on the territory of the fortress and became the main producer of copper coins in the Russian Empire. Until 1876, it produced about 80% of the country’s copper coins. In the 1720s, the population of Yekaterinburg was about 4,000 people.

Yekaterinburg - one of the economic centers of the Russian Empire

In the middle of the 18th century, the first ore gold in Russia was discovered in this region, which was the beginning of the gold industry in the country. As a result, Yekaterinburg became the center of a whole system of densely located plants and began to develop as the capital of the mining region, which spread on both sides of the Ural Range.

In 1781, Catherine II granted Yekaterinburg the status of a county town in the Perm Governorate. The population of the town was about 8,000 people. In 1783, the town received a coat of arms depicting an ore mine and a melting furnace, which symbolized its mining and metallurgical industries (similar images are depicted on the current coat of arms and flag of Yekaterinburg).

In 1783, the Great Siberian Road was opened - the main road of the Russian Empire that passed through Yekaterinburg. It served as an impetus for the transformation of Yekaterinburg into a transport hub and a center of trade. Thus, Yekaterinburg, among other towns of the Perm Governorate, became the key town for the development of the boundless and rich Siberia, the “window to Asia”, just as St. Petersburg was the Russian “window to Europe.”

In 1808, the Yekaterinburg plant was closed, and the history of the town entered a new stage related to the development of a large regional center with a diversified economy. At the beginning of the 19th century, the gold mining industry flourished. At the same time, deposits of emeralds, sapphires, aquamarines, diamonds, and other precious, semiprecious, and ornamental stones were discovered in the Urals. Yekaterinburg became one of the world centers for their artistic processing.

After the abolition of serfdom in 1861, the mining industry of the Urals experienced a severe crisis, a number of plants were closed. In 1878, the first railway was constructed across the Urals and connected Yekaterinburg with Perm. In 1888, the Yekaterinburg-Tyumen railway was built, and in 1897 - the railway to Chelyabinsk, which provided access to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Yekaterinburg became a major railway junction, which contributed to the development of the local food industry, especially flour milling. In 1913, the population of Yekaterinburg was about 69,000 people.

Yekaterinburg in the first years of Soviet power

On November 8, 1917, Soviet power was established in Yekaterinburg. On April 30, 1918, the last Russian emperor Nicholas II and his family members with a few servants were transported from Tobolsk to Yekaterinburg. They were placed in the “House of Special Purpose”, the mansion of engineer Nikolai Ipatiev requisitioned for this purpose, and transferred under the supervision and responsibility of the Ural Regional Soviet.

In July 1918, units of the White Siberian army approached Yekaterinburg, under this pretext the leadership of the Ural Regional Soviet decided to shoot the imperial family. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, it was done in the basement of the Ipatiev House.

10 days later, units of the Czechoslovak Legion entered Yekaterinburg. Over the next 12 months, it was under the control of anti-Bolshevik forces. On July 14, 1919, the Red Army reoccupied the city. Soviet authorities and the Yekaterinburg Province with a center in Yekaterinburg were restored. In 1920, the population of the city was about 94,400 people.

The political center of the Urals moved from Perm to Yekaterinburg. In 1923, Yekaterinburg became the administrative center of the vast Ural Oblast, which in size exceeded the territory of the present Ural Federal District of Russia. In 1924, the city council decided to rename the capital of the new region to Sverdlovsk - in honor of Yakov Sverdlov, a Bolshevik party administrator and chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee.

Sverdlovsk - a Soviet industrial giant

During the years of Stalin’s industrialization, Sverdlovsk was turned into a powerful industrial center. The old factories were reconstructed and new large factories were built, including giant machine-building and metal processing plants. In 1933, the construction of the future flagship of Soviet engineering (Uralmash) was completed. The population of Sverdlovsk grew by more than 3 times, and it became one of the fastest growing cities in the USSR.

January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was divided into three regions - Sverdlovsk Oblast with a center in Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast with a center in Chelyabinsk, and Ob-Irtysh Oblast with a center in Tyumen. By the end of the 1930s, there were 140 industrial enterprises, 25 research institutes, 12 higher educational institutions in Sverdlovsk. In 1939, the population of the city was about 425,500 people.

Along with other Ural cities, Sverdlovsk made a significant contribution to the victory of the USSR in the Second World War. In total, more than 100,000 residents of the city joined the Red Army. 41,772 people didn’t return from the war: 21,397 - killed in battles, 4,778 - died from wounds in hospitals, 15,491 - went missing, 106 - died in prisoner of war camps.

Sverdlovsk became the largest evacuation point, more than 50 large and medium enterprises from the western regions of Russia and Ukraine were evacuated here. During the war years, industrial production in Sverdlovsk grew 7 times.

After the war, this city became the largest center for engineering and metalworking in Russia. During the Cold War, Sverdlovsk, as a key center of the defense industry, was practically closed to foreigners. In 1960, in the sky above the city, Soviet air defense shot down the U-2 spy plane of the US manned by Francis Gary Powers.

On January 23, 1967, a millionth resident was born in the city and Sverdlovsk became one of the first Russian cities with a population of more than 1 million people. In 1979, Sverdlovsk was included in the list of historical cities of Russia.

On October 4, 1988, a serious accident occurred at the Sverdlovsk railway station. The train carrying almost 100 tons of explosives rolled downhill and crashed into a coal freight train. An explosion occurred, aggravated by the proximity of a large warehouse of fuels and lubricants. The funnel at the site of the explosion had a diameter of 40-60 meters and a depth of 8 meters, the shock wave spread 10-15 kilometers. The explosion killed 4 people at the station and injured more than 500 people. About 600 houses were severely damaged.

Yekaterinburg - one of the largest cities of the Russian Federation

On September 4, 1991, the Sverdlovsk City Council of People’s Deputies decided to return the city its original name - Yekaterinburg. The population of the city was about 1,375,000 people. The restrictions on foreign visitors to the city were also lifted, and soon the first consulate general was opened here - the United States of America (in 1994).

The transition to a market economy led to a reduction in production at industrial enterprises, inert giant plant found themselves in a particularly difficult situation. In 1991, the construction of the television tower was stopped. The city was flooded with chaotic small retail trade in temporary pavilions and markets. These years were the heyday of organized crime, Yekaterinburg became one of the “criminal capitals” of Russia. The economic situation began to improve by the end of the 1990s.

In 2000-2003, the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land was built on the site of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. In 2008-2009, the Koltsovo Airport was reconstructed. In June 15-17, 2009, SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and BRIC (Brasilia, Russia, India, China) summits were held in Yekaterinburg.

In 2015, the Presidential Center of Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russia, was opened in Yekaterinburg. On March 24, 2018, the abandoned unfinished television tower was dismantled. It was the tallest building in the city (almost 240 meters) and became one of the symbols of Yekaterinburg. 4 matches of FIFA World Cup 2018 were played in Yekaterinburg.

Today, Yekaterinburg is the largest center of attraction not only of Sverdlovsk Oblast, but also of the surrounding regions. By some socio-economic indicators, this city ranks third in Russia, after Moscow and St. Petersburg. Along with the development of trade and business, the city lost the status of the country’s largest industrial center.

Yekaterinburg - Features

Yekaterinburg is located in the floodplain of the Iset River on the eastern slope of the Middle Urals in Asia, near its border with Europe, about 1,800 km east of Moscow. Since the Ural Mountains are very old, there are no significant hills in the city.

This relief was a favorable condition for the construction of the main transport routes from Central Russia to Siberia (the Siberian Route and the Trans-Siberian Railway) through Yekaterinburg. As a result, it has become one of the most strategically important centers of Russia, which still provides a link between the European and Asian parts of the country.

Yekaterinburg is located in the border zone of temperate continental and continental climates. It is characterized by a sharp variability in weather conditions with well-defined seasons. The Ural Mountains, despite their low height, block the way to the masses of air coming from the west from the European part of Russia.

As a result, the Middle Urals is open to the invasion of cold Arctic air and continental air of the West Siberian Plain. At the same time, warm air masses of the Caspian Sea and the deserts of Central Asia can freely enter this territory from the south.

That is why the city is characterized by sharp temperature fluctuations and the formation of weather anomalies: in winter from severe frosts to thaws and rains, in summer from heat above plus 35 degrees Celsius to frosts. The average temperature in January is minus 12.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.

The city has a rather unfavorable environmental situation due to air pollution. In 2016, Yekaterinburg was included in the list of Russian cities with the worst environmental situation by this indicator. Car emissions account for more than 90% of all pollution.

Yekaterinburg ranks third in Russia (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) in the number of diplomatic missions, while their consular districts extend far beyond Sverdlovsk Oblast, and serve other regions of the Urals, Siberia, and the Volga region.

In terms of economy, Yekaterinburg also ranks third in the country. It is one of the largest financial and business centers of Russia. The main branches of production: metallurgical production and metalworking, food production, production of electrical equipment, electronic and optical equipment, production of vehicles, production of machinery and equipment, chemical production.

Almost all types of urban public transport are presented in Yekaterinburg: buses, trolleybuses, trams, subways, taxis. Yekaterinburg is the third largest transportation hub in Russia: 6 federal highways, 7 main railway lines, as well as Koltsovo International Airport, one of the country’s largest airports. The location of Yekaterinburg in the central part of the region allows you to get from it to any major city of the Urals in 7-10 hours.

Yekaterinburg has an extensive scientific and technical potential, it is one of the largest scientific centers in Russia. The Presidium and about 20 institutes of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 66 research institutes, and about 30 universities are located here.

This city is a relatively large tourist center. A significant part of tourists visit it to honor the memory of the last Russian emperor and his family killed by the Bolsheviks in the basement of the Ipatiev House in 1918.

There are about 50 different museums in Yekaterinburg. One of the world’s largest collections of constructivist architectural monuments has been preserved here. In total, there are over 600 historical and cultural monuments in the city, of which 43 are objects of federal significance. The City Day of Yekaterinburg is celebrated on the third Saturday of August.
