Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Travelers love flocking to Europe to relax and recuperate at one of its many beaches .

It's no wonder why. Europe's diverse coastline is full of natural beauty, from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean to the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast. These beaches are set against the backdrop of charming coastal villages and host iconic European beach clubs (Aperol Spritz, anyone?).

To help travelers find the perfect beach for their next Euro-trip, U.K.-based travel insurance comparison site Quotezone ranked Europe's most popular beaches, considering factors such as sea and air temperature, calmness of the water, TripAdvisor reviews and average cost to visit (including food, drink and an overnight stay). The beaches spanned beloved destinations like Greece, Spain and Italy but also included lesser-known locales such as Slovenia.

"Anyone planning a vacation to Europe should be sure to visit these beauty spots featured in our index, especially our top three hidden gems Cyprus, Malta, and Slovenia," CEO and travel insurance expert at Quotezone, Greg Wilson, told USA TODAY in a statement.

10. Plage de Palombaggia in Corsica, France

Located in the Mediterranean Sea just south of mainland France, Corsica offers beaches comparable to the Caribbean, and Plage de Palombaggia is one of the most popular beaches on the island, with crystal-clear water, soft white sand and secluded coves. The beach scored the 10th spot on the ranking for its gentle waters and its more than 3,300 five-star reviews. Visiting the beach won't come cheap, however. Plage de Palombaggia is the most expensive beach on the ranking at €233 (about $260) for an overnight stay with food and drink.

9. Bournemouth Beach in Bournemouth, England

Tucked beneath cliffs, sprawling Bournemouth Beach has been voted the top beach in the U.K. on TripAdvisor, offering rare warm waters for the country, a bustling pier and calm surf. Visiting the beach is a bit costly – the beach is the second-most expensive on the index – clocking in at an average of €180 (about $200) for a one-day stay.

8. Playa de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Spain

Spain's Canary Islands are idyllic, offering diverse beaches made of black or golden sand. Playa de Maspalomas on the island of Gran Canaria is well-known for its lighthouse, rolling dunes and warm waters, which earned it a spot on QuoteZone's index. The beach is surrounded by restaurants and hotels, and visiting costs, on average, €151 (about $168).

7. Praia da Falesia in Algarve, Portugal

One of Portugal's most famous beaches, Praia da Falesia is worth the hype. The beach has an array of natural beauty on display with its sandstone cliffs and bright blue water, but it also offers a lot to do. Visitors can check out the tide pools at low tide, swim or surf. Visitors can expect to pay about €137 (about $152) for a one-day stay.

6. La Pelosa Beach in Sardinia, Italy

Located on the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a picturesque escape for travelers, and its beaches are no different. La Pelosa Beach's tranquil waters and white sands have made it so popular that you need to book your visit in advance, which will cost €3.50 (about $3.90). Staying near the beach is pricey at €166 (about $185).

5. Zlatni Rat in Bol, Croatia

Translating to "Golden Horn," Zlatni Rat is a famous triangle-shaped beach on the Croatian island of Brac that extends into the ocean. As the tides and swells change, the beach also shape-shifts. It's stunning, but it's also relatively inexpensive to visit, coming in as the second-least expensive on the index. For food, drink and a one-night stay, the average price is €96 (about $107).

4. Elafonissi Beach in Crete, Greece

Crete is beloved by travelers, and Elafonissi Beach is one of the Greek island's famous beaches. Depending on the season, you may encounter the iconic pink sand, and year-round, the beach is beautiful with calm azure waters. The beach isn't exactly tranquil, however; it gets quite crowded as the day goes on. To visit, the average cost is €184 (about $205).

3. Portoroz Beach in Portoroz, Slovenia

Nestled against the Adriatic Sea, Portoroz Beach is a gorgeous pebble beach fronting Portoroz's resort area, so you can take a break from the sun and stroll the promenade. The beach is also the cheapest on the index at €93 (about $103) on average for a one-day stay.

2. Mellieha Bay Beach in Mellieha, Malta

Not only is Mellieha a sheltered bay that provides gentle and warm waters, but it's also the largest sand beach in Malta, which makes it the perfect place for families. The beach scored high on the index for its warm temperatures and water. Visitors can rent sunbeds, swim, kayak and more. To visit, it will cost €117 (about $130) on average.

1. Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Earning the top spot on the index is the picturesque Nissi Beach in Cyprus – and rightfully so. The beach seemingly has it all: warm weather and water temperatures, and calm waters because it's in a bay. Close by is a small island, which adds to the beach's natural beauty. "This destination ranked in the top spot across all factors, including water and air temperatures, waves, value for money and the number of 5-star reviews left by visitors," Wilson said. To visit for one night, it will cost €103 (about $114).

AP PHOTOS: Pope Francis’ Asia trip marks 60 years of papal visits to the region

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — Pope Francis’ visit to Southeast Asia, the longest trip in his papacy, is the latest in decades of regular papal visits to the Asia-Pacific region.

Papal travel is a thing of the modern era, starting with Pope Paul VI, who became the first pontiff to leave Italy in more than 150 years when he made his famous pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1964, shortly after becoming pope.

His next visit was to India later that same year, marking the first time a pope had ever visited Asia. It was one of many firsts for Paul VI, who was also the first pope to fly in an airplane, the first to leave Europe and the first to visit countries on six continents, earning him the nickname “the Pilgrim Pope.”

Others by Paul VI, according to the Vatican, included a 1970 trip with stops in Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ceylon — today Sri Lanka — and the Philippines, where a would-be assassin unsuccessfully attempted to stab him at Manila airport.

His successor, Pope John Paul I, never got the chance to travel, dying just over a month after he ascended to the papacy.

But Pope John Paul II, who followed in 1978, picked up where Paul VI left off and by the time of his death in 2005, was the most traveled pope in history; a title he holds to this day.

He made his first of two visits to the Philippines, one of Asia’s most Catholic countries, in 1981 in a trip that also took him to Pakistan, Guam, Japan and Anchorage, Alaska, according to the Vatican.

Over the years he would visit Asia many times, including trips to South Korea, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

In a notable moment from his 1986 trip to India, he was accompanied by Mother Teresa to her home for the poor in Kolkata, meeting and blessing its residents. Reports at the time said the pope was visibly moved by the visit, and Mother Teresa later called it “the happiest day of my life.”

John Paul II also visited Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific island nations of Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

His successor, Benedict XVI, became pope at an advanced age and did not travel as frequently or as far afield, but did visit Australia in 2008 for World Youth Day, according to the Vatican.

Francis, who took over from Benedict after he resigned in 2013 due to declining health, has already been to the Asia-Pacific region several times, with visits to countries including South Korea, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Thailand, Japan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

In his 2017 visit to Myanmar, also known as Burma, Francis famously met with Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Ky i, the democratically-elected leader who was ousted in the military in 2021, which has given rise to today’s civil war.

This time his Sept. 2-13 trip takes him to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.

Of interesting historical note: the last pope to have left Italy before Paul VI was Pius VII, though he did so involuntarily.

Captured by French forces in Rome in 1809, Pius VII had been captive for three years when the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, ordered him moved near Paris in 1812. As Napoleon’s empire crumbled, he was released and returned to Rome in 1814.

Travel Constipation: Why It Happens And How To Fix It

Travel constipation is an unpleasant sensation that can ruin a fun trip. Here is the reason people get it and how to avoid it.

Sarah Rand • Sep 3, 2024

Travel constipation is an issue that many people silently endure. Here are some reasons and solutions. Pictured: Black woman holding stomach in pain

While there are many different things for travelers to worry about during travel, being physically prepared is a big concern. Many people plan ahead for their airport look or even bring along their favorite snack, but do not plan around their bathroom breaks. Travel constipation is an experience that can really damper a trip. It can be caused by many different things and hit travelers suddenly . Here are a few tips worth knowing about the unfortunate feeling of travel constipation and how people can avoid it in the future.

How Travel Constipation Happens

ez travel trips photos

There are an array of reasons that world travelers may become constipated while they are getting to their destination. The main reasons that people get constipated during travel are dehydration, changes to their diet, change of routine, or a lack of movement. Lack of sleep, stress or anxiety, taking medications in a new time zone, and more can also impact bowel movements. All the different ways the body can be disrupted depends on the person.

However, regardless of the reason that someone feels constipated during travel, it is equally uncomfortable. Travel constipation can lead to infrequent bathroom breaks, straining during a bathroom break, and feeling unsatisfied after using the restroom. These things can make relaxing during a vacation or immersing in an unfamiliar culture harder to enjoy.

Technically, having fewer bowel movements than usual counts as constipation. When people do not have one for three days or more, it is considered significant. Although this typically will go away on its own in a couple of days or when travelers settle back home, travelers should not have to just endure and wait for it to pass.

How To Avoid It and Solutions

World adventurers can take their experience into their own hands. One of the easiest ways to avoid constipation while on the road is to stay hydrated . This can relieve the feeling and make a trip to the bathroom easier. If straight water is not a favorite, fruit is another way to consume more water since many varieties typically have a high water content.

Foods high in fiber are a great way to keep the body regular too. People on the go or planning to be in more rural areas during a trip can pack high-fiber snacks like apples, whole grain crackers, and nuts. Probiotic supplements can help with healthy digestion and even soothe symptoms of constipation. If holistic solutions are preferable, yogurt and fermented foods do the same thing as supplements.

Being active while abroad can also encourage the body to keep the digestive system moving. Between planes, trains, or car rides, travelers should stay physically active. If it comes down to it, over-the-counter laxatives or stool softeners are another option.

Travel Tip: The laxative MiraLAX is a popular over-the-counter option that people can mix into their beverage. Depending on the dosage, it can gradually soothe constipation and make a trip to the bathroom more likely.

some hotels could have been better

It was jam packed with every place I wanted to go and see. I especially love my photo of us setting out on the night time river cruise in St Petersburg and the Peter...

I really did not buy much and what I did buy was small gifts for others .

Good hotels, some better than others. Interesting itinerary

Too rushed. Optional tour rather too short

110/2024 An unpaved dirt road over here, very confusing where to go at dark hours. Regular Gas $4.79/gallon. Very clean restrooms. Merchandise well stocked from snacks, accessories, beverages, souvenirs and more.

This gas station has significantly lower gas prices for gas as compared to the gas stations near Kettleman city. We paid one dollar less at this gas station compared to the ones near the In-N-Out in Kettleman city per gallon of gas! Highly recommended. we found it by checking the gas buddy app.

This place is a one stop shop everything so yummy. The subway is really good and fresh. The place is really delicious as well and the gas station part has so many different options to pick from snacks.

Stopped for dog rest a little bit of shade with some trees. Easy off and on freeway. Get gas get some snacks or food your good to go

Vianca informed us that they unfortunately don't accept any manufacturer's coupons, except for those for cigarettes. She couldn't point or speak to a specific policy about it and seemed exceptionally unhelpful, coming off as passive-aggressive and making up barriers on the spot to flex her hostilities on wary travelers.

Nice place to use the restroom or shower , but if you want to eat at the Mexican place or the Subway forget it!!! $14 for a burrito that worth $5, and Subway there stuff is overpriced by $5 to $6. Most truck stops raise the price a couple of dollars but these guys are crazy. Last time I will ever stop here.

What a great discovery! And even better because the previous two public rest stops were closed. Quality/Quantity - Convenience food choices. Pizza, breakfast, lunch, beer, lol. Also Mexican, Subway, Cinnabon, etc. See pictures. Atmosphere - Open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Very clean organized location. Caters to both truck drivers and road trippers, like myself. 6 showers, clean bathrooms. Gas pumps are also well kept with reasonable prices. Love the huge bucket with the squeeze and paper towel dispenser, see picture. Other Pilot locations have = laundry service, game rooms, truck washes, etc. Paid wifi. Reserved parking for truck drivers. Prime parking for $17 a night. 70 parking spaces. Service - Good. Price - Gas price $4.59, only 10¢ more than my San Leandro Costco. Not bad! Owner Comment - Part of the Pilot Company family. Congrats on your success since 1958.

One of the better rest stops on the 5. Lots of food options and clean bathrooms. Pumps were all working and the squeegee's all were set up. Everything you want in a gas stop

Photo of Juan D.

There are plenty of pumps and parking here. The men's and women's bathroom are clean and like most truckstops, there are tons of stuff to buy inside. The place seems safe, if your worried about that.

Ukraine war latest: Zelenskyy sacks air force chief; girl among six killed in Russian bomb attack that hit Kharkiv playground

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has dismissed the country's air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk after claims an F-16 pilot was killed by friendly fire. Six people have died, including a 14-year-old girl on a playground, in a Russian guided bomb attack on Kharkiv, officials say.

  • Big picture: Everything you need to know as war enters new week
  • Analysis: Why Putin's arrest in Mongolia is unlikely
  • Watch: Who are Ukraine's secret resistance?
  • Your questions answered: Strategic consequences for Ukraine if Pokrovsk falls

Good afternoon - we don't have live updates today, but here's everything you need to know as the war enters a new week.

This morning Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv, the Ukrainian military said - with witnesses in the city hearing several loud explosions that sounded like the work of air defence units.

It came after another weekend of Ukraine and Russia trading drone attacks. Ukrainian air defences shot down 24 of 52 drones during overnight attacks, the air force said on Saturday.

And Kyiv hit back yesterday, launching a wave of attacks targeting power and refinery plants in the Moscow region and neighbouring Tver, sparking fires, while scores of drones were destroyed across other parts of the country, Russian officials said.

Today Vladimir Putin is due to begin a visit to Mongolia, a country that is a member of the International Criminal Court, which last year issued a warrant for his arrest. In theory, it means he should be put in handcuffs as soon as he lands - but he won't be. Our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett explains why here...

These maps show the latest situation on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine and the Russian region of Kursk, invaded by Kyiv's forces in a surprise incursion last month. On Saturday, Moscow's defence ministry claimed another settlement, Kirove, in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, had fallen under its control.

Here are some other key developments from the past seven days:

Russian attacks 'cost £1bn':  Moscow launched one of its biggest air attacks of the war so far last Monday, with drones and missiles fired into more than half of Ukrainian regions. At least seven people were killed and power facilities were damaged, Kyiv said. The "cowardly" air attacks cost Moscow almost £1.14bn, the UK representative to the UN James Kariuki said, citing figures come from a report by Forbes Ukraine and Ekonmichna Pravda.

Pokrovsk : Russian forces have been closing in on the strategically important city of Pokrovsk in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, prompting some residents to evacuate for fear it will fall in the coming weeks.

The region lies on a key road used by the Ukrainian military to supply other embattled Ukrainian-held outposts, such as the towns of Chasiv Yar and Kostiantynivka in Donetsk.

Moscow says it has annexed Donetsk, a claim Kyiv rejects as illegal, and sees taking control of Pokrovsk as an important stepping stone to incorporating the entire region into Russia.

Our military analyst Sean Bell answered a reader's question on the strategic consequences for Ukraine if the city falls in our Your Questions Answered series - read what he had to say here .

Belgorod:  Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region is ongoing, but there were Russian reports last week that Ukraine has attempted to break into the neighbouring Belgorod region, with Moscow's defence ministry saying the situation "remains difficult but under control" on Tuesday.

Andrei Belousov, the defence minister, said later that Russia had formed three new military groupings to bolster security in regions bordering Ukraine.

In a strike on the city late on Friday, five people were killed and 46 injured, the local governor said, with seven children among the 37 taken to hospital.

Zelenskyy's home town struck : A Russian missile struck Volodymyr Zelenskyy's home town of Kryvyi Rih on Tuesday as Ukraine was observing an official day of mourning for an attack that killed four people the day before.

The attack on the city struck civilian infrastructure and wounded eight people, local administration head Oleksandr Vilkul said on social media.

The attack was part of a barrage of dozens of missiles and drones across Ukraine that Russia launched.

Sacking after F-16 crash:  Mr Zelenskyy dismissed Ukraine's air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk on Friday. He gave no immediate explanation but it comes days after a Ukrainian pilot was killed when his US-donated F-16 jet crashed on Monday, with a possible reported cause being friendly fire.

Kharkiv strike : Six people, including a 14-year-old girl, died and at least 55 others were hurt after a Russian missile hit a residential building and playground in Kharkiv on Friday. Kharkiv has been the focus of heavy Russian bombing throughout the war, though there had been a drop in intensity in recent weeks, possibly related to the shock incursion into Kursk.

We'll be back with more updates and analysis soon, but before we go, here's a recap of the key developments that took place today:

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sacked Ukraine's air force commander, days after a pilot died when an F-16 jet crashed
  • Six people have died and at least 55 others hurt following a Russian guided bomb attack on the city of Kharkiv;
  • Two women died and 11 people were injured by an attack which struck a factory in Sumy that manufactures packaging for baby food, juices and household products;
  • The Kremlin announced that Vladimir Putin plans to visit Mongolia - a member of the International Criminal Court which has an issued an arrest warrant for him;
  • The Ukrainian pilot killed when his F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday was shot down by Ukraine's own anti-aircraft missile system, an MP has claimed;
  • Mr Zelenskyy said today's attack on Kharkiv could have been avoided if Ukraine had permission to strike Russian military targets with Western weapons;
  • The EU rebuffed a request from Kyiv for the bloc to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the country's air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk.

The sacking was announced on Friday in a presidential decree.

There was no immediate explanation from Mr Zelenskyy for his decision but it comes days after a Ukrainian pilot was killed when his F-16 jet crashed on Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Oleksiy Mes was killed while defending Ukraine's skies in a Western-donated warplane.

Ukrainian MP Mariana Bezuhla has claimed the jet was shot down by the country's own anti-aircraft missile system.

In response to Ms Bezuhla before his sacking, Lieutenant General Oleshchuk said her comments were a "tool to discredit the top military leadership".

"Mariana, the time will come when you will apologise to the entire army for what you have done, I hope in court!", he added.

Six people are now known to have died following the Russian guided bomb attack on Kharkiv, local authorities have said.

Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said one child was killed in a playground and three people were killed in a 12-storey apartment block that caught fire as a result of the strike.

The Ukrainian authorities did not give the circumstances in which the two other people died in the strikes, which hit four areas of the city.

As well as those people who died, at least 55 others were injured, officials said.

About 20 of the injured were in severe condition, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Top Ukrainian officials have begun a visit to Washington, the Ukrainian presidential office has said.

The delegation includes economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko and defence minister Rustem Umerov.

"We are working in Washington... We are grateful to our partners for their support," the president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on Telegram .

The visit comes amid Volodymyr Zelenskyy's renewed a call on Western allies to allow Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons to attack Russian military air bases.

Kyiv says that the most effective way to counter Russian strikes is to target Russian planes, not the bombs themselves.

The US ambassador to Ukraine has called on Russia to be "held accountable for these war crimes" in Kharkiv.

In a statement on X, Bridget A Brink said "Russia struck an apartment building in Kharkiv with a guided aerial bomb, killing several and injuring many, including children".

Kharkiv has been the focus of heavy Russian bombing throughout the war, although there had been a drop in intensity in recent weeks, possibly related to a surprise invasion launched by Ukrainian forces into Russia's Kursk region.

Ukrainian authorities said today's attack involved five aerial guided bombs launched from planes in Russia's Belgorod region, also known as "glide bombs" which are fitted with a navigation system taking them to their targets.

The footage below shows the aftermath of the attack in Kharkiv.

The EU has rebuffed a request from Kyiv for the bloc to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country, but will train them as close as possible to Ukrainian territory, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said.

The EU has trained some 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers inside the economic union's borders since Russia's invasion of the country and will aim to train 15,000 more by the end of the year, Mr Borrell said.

Kyiv has asked the EU to consider some training inside Ukraine, arguing this would be faster, more cost-effective, and logistically easier than inside the EU.

But multiple EU countries are reluctant to deploy troops inside Ukraine, expressing concerns about their safety and questioning whether such a move would divert Ukrainian forces from their core mission, in order to protect trainers.

Mr Borrell told reporters: "Some member states were ready, others reluctant.

"Finally, we decided that the training will be as close as possible to Ukraine, but not in Ukrainian territory."

Ukraine has urged Mongolia to arrest Vladimir Putin on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant when he visits next week.

The court issued an arrest warrant in March of last year against Mr Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

The Kremlin has dismissed the accusation, saying it is politically motivated.

The warrant obliges the court's 124 member states, including Mongolia, to arrest Mr Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.

Now, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has called on the ICC to arrest the Russian leader when he visits Mongolia on 3 September.

"We call on the Mongolian authorities to comply with the mandatory international arrest warrant and transfer Putin to the International Criminal Court in the Hague," the ministry said on Telegram.

Asked earlier today whether Moscow was concerned that Mongolia was a member of the ICC, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "No, no worries about this. We have a great dialogue with our friends from Mongolia."

Asked whether there had been discussions with Mongolian authorities about the ICC warrant, Mr Peskov added: "Obviously the visit, all of the aspects of the visit have been thoroughly discussed."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he held a meeting with the top military commanders of Ukraine this afternoon.

The president said that three key issues were discussed, starting with the situation on the frontlines.

Kursk invasion

Ukraine's top commander says Kyiv's forces have advanced up to 2km in their invasion of Russia's Kursk region.

Oleksandr Syrskyi briefed Mr Zelenskyy via video link and said Ukrainian forces took control of 5sq km of Russian territory.

Discussions were also had over the next set of reinforcements in the area, which Mr Zelenskyy said was "extremely important for strengthening our positions".

General Syrskyi also briefed the president on the ongoing fighting near Pokrovsk, which Ukraine is trying desperately to hold in the face of advancing Russian troops.

Preparing for new academic year

The meeting also covered how Ukraine will deal with the new academic year for schoolchildren, which starts next week.

Mr Zelenskyy heard reports from Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, internal affairs minister Ihor Klymenko and education and science minister Oksen Lisovyi.

The president said discussions covered security issues, as well as the construction of bomb shelters.

Energy problems

The third key issue addressed was the current state of Ukraine's energy grid following a week of heavy Russian strikes.

Mr Zelenskyy heard analysis of energy issues, including the potential construction of protective structures around key energy infrastructure.

Images are emerging of the aftermath of today's attack on Kharkiv.

Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians, but thousands have been killed and wounded in its strikes during its invasion.

The scenes come as Volodymyr Zelenskyy renews a call on Western allies to allow long-range attacks on Russian military air bases after the attack.
