How the Homeless World Cup Soccer Tournament Inspired the Netflix Drama The Beautiful Game

The Beautiful Game is a fictional movie about the very real Homeless World Cup Tournament, which for two decades, has brought together hundreds of people for a soccer tournament. Starring Bill Nighy as a grieving widower who throws himself into coaching as a way to gain meaning from his life, the film, out March 29, aims to kickstart awareness about the real tournament and change viewers’ perceptions of the homeless and people in recovery .

In the film, Mal (Nighy) is a longtime coach of homeless English soccer players. The players he coaches see the Homeless World Cup tournament as a step toward redemption . The people who participate in the tournament have been homeless , are in recovery, or are asylum seekers. For example, one English player named Nathan (Callum Scott Howells) is a heroin addict whose mother has been told not to speak to him anymore. Another, Cal, (Kit Young) left his child home alone for 48 hours while he went on a bender. During the tournament, there’s one meet-cute to follow, as Jason (Sheyi Cole) on the English team has a crush on a female American player Rosita (Cristina Rodlo) and the two go on a running date to stay in shape for the games.

The filmmakers also cast real Homeless World Cup alums who play for the American team. Among them is Lisa Wrightsman, who coached the American team at the first U.S. Homeless World Cup in Sacramento in 2023 and played in the Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in 2010. Sporting a #3 jersey, she was one of the extras on the U.S. team, which scores a goal towards the end in a match against the English team for third place.

Wrightsman said she related most to the English player Vinny (Micheal Ward), who Coach Mal scouts for the team at the beginning of the film, as he’s showing off his soccer skills to a group of kid soccer players. Just as Vinny once had a promising professional soccer career that fell through, Wrightsman played soccer at Sacramento State. When she lost her opportunity to play professionally, she couldn't see another future in sight. She became addicted to drugs and alcohol, landing in jail when she hit rock bottom. While in a sober living facility, she met a case manager and a group of guys practicing for a Street Soccer USA tournament, backed by one of the social services organizations that refers players to the Homeless World Cup. She had a blast at the Rio Homeless World Cup, and ended up making a career out of teaching soccer to at-risk communities. Now she helps runs Sacramento chapter of Street Soccer USA, which introduces soccer to low-income youth.

Wrightsman hopes viewers will see the personal transformations that can happen when vulnerable people are given the right resources . As she describes what it felt like to be a player in the Homeless World Cup and how it gave her a new outlook on life: "We’re all terrified of dying, and we don't want to be in trouble, but nobody really sees the future being exciting. You're just like, I don't want to die anymore. The Homeless World Cup gave me a vision of life [that] I'm excited about. And if this is the result of me being sober and doing good things, I'm going to do more of those things."

An athlete that Wrightsman has sponsored in a recovery capacity also appears in The Beautiful Game : Angela Draws, who wears a #4 jersey in the film, can be seen playing soccer with the American team players and cheering enthusiastically on the sidelines. Draws met Wrightsman in a sober living facility when she was recovering from drug addiction, and Wrightsman tapped her to play. Draws had never played soccer outside of grade school, but she says it’s the reason why she hasn’t relapsed in 12 years. After competing in the 2014 Homeless World Cup in Santiago, Chile, she now works as a personal trainer in Sacramento.

Overall, she hopes the Netflix movie will inspire people to be nicer to the homeless and people recovering from addiction. “You never know the magic inside someone who's sleeping on the street," she says. You never know the beauty or potential that they have. We are not our circumstance. We are not the worst thing we've ever done.”

The next Homeless World Cup is scheduled for September 21-28 in Seoul, South Korea, featuring teams from 49 member countries.

The Beautiful Game: Where Was Netflix’s Sports Movie Filmed?

Under the direction of Thea Sharrock, ‘The Beautiful Game’ is a heartwarming sports drama film that follows an England football team as they travel to Rome and compete in the Homeless World Cup. Based on a true story, the film introduces us to Coach Mel and his team of homeless football players, who are preparing for an international competition in Rome. The Homeless World Cup advocates an end to homelessness by inviting teams comprised of hobos from all over the world to play at the tournament. At the last moment, Mel recruits Vinny Walker, a former professional football player who now sleeps in his car.

Vinny reluctantly joins the team but doesn’t gel with the other players, keeping the ball to himself. However, without teamwork, the Londoners struggle to compete at the tournament. Vinny must look past his insecurities to accept his situation and work with his teammates to embody the spirit of growth and unity that is advocated by the Homeless World Cup. The Netflix film takes us on a tour of the majestic historic sights around Rome as the characters arrive in the city and begin to play in the tournament. With such splendid scenery featured in the movie’s background, questions may be generated regarding the specifics of the shooting sites observed.

The Beautiful Game Filming Locations

‘The Beautiful Game’ was largely filmed in Rome, Italy, with some sequences being shot in London, England. Shooting for the film began on July 23, 2021, and was wrapped up in Rome by October 11, 2021. Allow us to take you through the exact locations seen in the background of this insightful sports drama.

London, England

While the majority of the film was shot in Rome, select sequences were captured in London to explore the characters, their backgrounds, and their experiences before the journey to the Homeless World Cup. Rome, Italy

The production team filmed most of ‘The Beautiful Game’ in and around Rome, as the capital city was the host of the actual Homeless World Cup depicted in the film, thus providing both authenticity and a picturesque backdrop. As the tournament progresses, we are treated to a cornucopia of cinematic shots of Rome’s antiquated relics, creating a vibrant yet contemplative atmosphere for the characters to rediscover themselves through their love for a beautiful game

As the English football team joins throngs of other players pouring into the city, aerial shots of Rome and its monuments are on full display. The Japanese team is photographed in front of the Colosseum, an emblematic testament to ancient Rome’s grandeur and power. We can also spot the Castel Sant’Angelo with a large crowd gathered at its gate while a stream of people trails on the St. Angelo Bridge. The castle was initially commissioned by the Roman emperor as a mausoleum for him and his family. Another famous landmark shown in the sequence is the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient Roman architecture that is dedicated as a temple to all the gods.

The football matches themselves are held on the tree-lined avenue of Parco della Mole Adriana Gardens. Castel Sant’Angelo looms over the matches in the background. The gardens are created in a star-shaped pattern against the River Tiber. The location served as the perfect site to hold the matches, an expansive territory populated by greenery and marked by an ancient monument.

When the teammates and their coach are exploring the monuments of Rome together, they walk up the Spanish Steps, a monumental staircase that connects the Piazza di Spagna with the Piazza Trinità dei Monti, located in the heart of Rome’s historic center. Built in the 18th century, the steps are named after the nearby Spanish Embassy to the Holy See. The teams also visit the Trevi Fountain, creating a memorable scene. The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome’s most famous and beloved landmarks, depicting Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The players toss a coin with their right hand and over their left shoulder into the fountain, as doing so is believed to ensure a return to Rome.

When Vinny is sitting on a bench by his lonesome at sunset, he is at the Terrazza Belvedere Aventino, a scenic terrace located on Aventine Hill that offers breathtaking panoramic views of Rome. It became an ideal spot to shoot Vinny’s internal conflict as Aventine Hill was one of the seven hills on which ancient Rome was built and is evocative of the protagonist building himself anew in the cradle of the prosperous ancient civilization.

The Beautiful Game is Netflix ’s new football drama film, starring Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward. But what songs are included on the film’s soundtrack? Read on for all the details.

The feature film was released onto the streaming platform last week (March 29), and tells the story of the England homeless team and their star striker Vinny (Ward) and coach Mal (Nighy), as they compete in the Homeless World Cup.

It is directed by Thea Sharrock, who also helmed the recent box office hit Wicked Little Letters , and was written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who is known for 24 Hour Party People , Millions and the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

Bill Nighy Goes for Gold at the Homeless World Cup in The Beautiful Game Trailer (Exclusive)

Produced by Colin Farrell and with the support of the Homeless World Cup, a real-life global street soccer tournament, The Beautiful Game is on Netflix March 29

The Beautiful Game , a new movie about the real-life Homeless World Cup , is ready for kickoff. 

Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward star in the upcoming sports drama (on Netflix March 29) about the global street football (or soccer) tournament that welcomes homeless athletes from around the world every year. 

PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at the trailer for The Beautiful Game , which counts Colin Farrell among its producers and is made with the support of the Homeless World Cup. 

Nighy, 74, plays Mal, a “manager of England’s homeless football team, taking his players to Rome with the hope of being crowned champions of the Homeless World Cup,” per the movie’s official synopsis. 

“At the last minute he decides to bring with them a talented striker” named Vinny, played by Empire of Light star Ward, 26. The goal scorer “could give them a real chance at winning, but only if he’s ready to let go of his past and become part of the team.”

“This competition brings us all together,” says Nighy in the trailer. “A second chance to be part of a team.”

Ward can be heard giving his fellow footballers an inspiring speech: “If you lose your way, the team will always come and find you.”

“ The Beautiful Game is a film about people and the best of humanity,” director Thea Sharrock tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It’s about finding yourself again under the warmth of the Roman sun.”

She adds that the cast, which includes Valeria Golino , Callum Scott Howells, Kit Young and Cristina Rodlo, “is truly international.” The film was shot in both London and Rome. 

“I didn’t know about the Homeless World Cup before reading the [Frank Cottrell-Boyce-written] script, which I still find hard to believe as it’s such a brilliant and inspiring organisation,” says Sharrock. “I’m so happy that we will be able to share it with people through the movie.”

The Homeless World Cup Foundation, an advocacy org, invites to its annual tournament teams made up of homeless players from dozens of countries around the globe. Its 19th edition will take place in September in Seoul, South Korea.

Nighy, fresh off his Oscar nomination for last year’s Living , was involved with The Beautiful Game before Sharrock signed on, the British director says. “Bill is the best of the best. He is also a football connoisseur, so I enjoy every moment with him.”

She jokes that although “he supports Crystal Palace” and she is a longtime Arsenal fan, “we found mutual respect for one another. He was also one of the few cast members I didn’t need to worry about their skills with a ball.”

Ward, she adds, underwent an intense football regimen to play the role of Vinny. “How he dedicated himself to the training was fantastic. He never gave up.”

Mel Young, president and founder of the Homeless World Cup Foundation, said in a statement in 2021 that the tournament “is our contribution to tackling the homeless problem across the globe but there is so much more to do,” per Deadline .

“We hope that the work we do being told in The Beautiful Game inspires more people to join in and support future Homeless World Cups and together we can all aim to end homelessness forever.”

The Beautiful Game will premiere on Netflix March 29.

Taylor Swift Still Hasn't Played These “Secret Songs” On The Eras Tour

There are 18 more shows — and almost 18 tracks from her catalog left.

Taylor Swift has played a whopping 131 shows on her record-breaking Eras Tour thus far, and each night, she chooses two tracks that aren’t already on the 45-song setlist to perform acoustically as “Secret Songs.” Somehow, she still hasn’t gone through her entire catalog yet.

In all fairness, Swift did release a whole new album, The Tortured Poets Department , in April, giving her 31 new songs to perform on tour both as “Secret Songs” and as part of the revised setlist . But there are quite a few songs from her previous albums, plus side endeavors, that Swift has still yet to touch by the time she ended her European leg on Aug. 20.

With just 18 more shows to go across the U.S. and Canada (at least so far) before she ends the tour on Dec. 8 in Vancouver, there are a surprising amount of tracks in her catalog that Swift has yet to perform. Here’s every song that she may still pull out before she wraps up.

Songs Taylor Has Yet To Perform

“beautiful eyes”.

Only die-hard Swifties remember the Walmart-exclusive Beautiful Eyes EP, which contains its little-known title track. Whether she performs it as a Secret Song or even re-records a “Taylor’s Version” is anyone’s guess.

“I Heart?” was the only other original track on the Beautiful Eyes EP. Perhaps Swift will do both songs in one swoop as a mash-up.

“That’s When”

Swift may be waiting for collaborator Keith Urban to perform “That’s When” with her, but she hasn’t let that stop her from performing previous collabs without her duet partner before.

“Bye Bye Baby”

Swift has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever by saving “Bye Bye Baby” for the final Eras Tour show. Let’s hope she takes the chance.

“Girl At Home”

“Girl At Home” is the only song that Swift completely re-invented for Red (Taylor’s Version), turning the campfire ditty into an electro-infused stomper. Perhaps she has no desire to bring it back to its acoustic roots, hence why she’s yet to perform it as a Secret Song.

Swift wrote this devastating ballad back in 2011 about a 3-year-old boy who died of cancer, inspired by his mother Maya’s blog. Given the emotional subject matter, it wouldn’t be surprising if she opted not to perform this at all.

“Forever Winter”

While “Forever Winter” can comfort you through any situation, the Vault track from Red (Taylor’s Version) is reported to be about one of Swift’s late friends , so it wouldn’t be surprising if she felt like it was too emotional to sing.

“Soon You’ll Get Better”

Swift has only performed “Soon You’ll Get Better” once, for Lady Gaga’s One World: Together At Home special in March 2020. Given that the Lover track was inspired by both of her parents’ experiences with cancer, it may very well stay that way.

“Beautiful Ghosts”

Sure, Cats was possibly one of the worst-received films of the century. But Swift’s original song for the film was still nominated for a Golden Globe, and given that she’s performed most of her soundtrack songs already, it’s only fair that this one gets a chance.

“Only the Young”

Swift wrote this politically motivated song for her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, which set the tone for that year’s presidential election. Her remaining U.S. shows all take place before the 2024 election, giving her the perfect opportunity to perform it for the first time.

“Cassandra”

Fans have long speculated that “Cassandra” will be played in a mash-up with Folklore deep cut “Mad Woman,” as both songs explore similar territory about her relationship to the media and public eye.

Other Possibilities

“you’ll always find your way back home”.

Swift wrote “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home” for Hannah Montana: The Movie , which she also made a cameo to sing “Crazier,” another song from the film’s soundtrack.

“Best Days of Your Life”

Swift co-wrote and sang background vocals for Kellie Pickler’s 2008 single “Best Days of Your Life,” when Pickler was an opening act on the Fearless Tour. Given how Swift sometimes likes to reclaim songs she gave to other artists, it wouldn’t be too surprising if this track was next.

“Two Is Better Than One”

Swift’s first-ever feature was with Boys Like Girls (remember them?) on “Two Is Better Than One,” a song you definitely heard on the radio but likely forgot about. It’s not likely that she’ll make you remember it, but you never know.

“Half Of My Heart”

Yes, Swift was featured in her ex-boyfriend John Mayer’s single “Half of My Heart” in 2009, when they were reportedly dating. She’s never performed it before, and it’d be a shock if she actually did.

“Highway Don’t Care”

Given that she only sings one line on this collaboration with Urban and Tim McGraw, which she didn’t even co-write, it’s highly unlikely that she brings it out for the Eras Tour.

“Renegade” & “Birch”

Given how often her collaborator Aaron Dessner has appeared at the Eras Tour to perform with Swift, it’s somewhat surprising that she hasn’t touched her 2021 songs with Big Red Machine, Dessner’s side project with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. But there’s still time.

“The Alcott”

Swift may only perform “The Alcott,” her duet with The National, if she can wrangle Dessner and the rest of the band to sing it with her, much like she did with Gracie Abrams on their collab, “Us.”

This week sees the end of the Global Swings section of the season ahead of the Back 9 starting at next week's Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo.

The Closing Swing comes to an end this week with last week's winner David Ravetto and the man he beat into second Jesper Svensson the only two players who can overhaul Robert MacIntyre at the top of the Rankings and take home the US$200,000 bonus.

The leading DP World Tour member (not otherwise exempt) will also qualify for the BMW PGA Championship , the third of five Rolex Series events this season.

But that is not all that is on offer on Sunday as a further $1million Bonus Pool will be shared among the leading ten players on the Race to Dubai who have played a minimum of eight ‘regular’ Global Swings events outside the Major Championships and Genesis Scottish Open.

Rasmus Højgaard became the first home winner of this event 12 months ago when he defeated Nacho Elvira in a six-hole play-off and he returns to defend his title, with identical twin brother Nicolai also in the field.

They lead a strong Danish contingent with event Chairman Thomas Bjørn also teeing it up alongside the likes of Søren Kjeldsen and Thorbjørn Olesen and rising stars Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Jacob Skov Olesen at new venue Lübker Golf Resort.

Fantasy Insight : As it stands, Nicolai Højgaard is the most-picked player this week, featuring in a whopping 88% of teams, making him the most popular pick for any event so far this season, overtaking Cam Smith's 78.89% at the season-opening Fortinet Australian PGA Championship.

Countryman Olesen would hold that honour were it not for Højgaard, as he is in 85% of teams, with Austrian Bernd Wiesbgerger the next most popular player in a distant third (41%).

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Nicolai Højgaard

It is a tight-run thing this week in terms of favouritism, with many bookmakers unable to separate the Højgaards, but we are giving the edge to Nicolai - just.

The World Number 48 is the highest-ranked player in the field and arrives off the back of a productive first full season on the PGA TOUR, while also playing in two Rolex Series events, all four Majors and the Olympic Games.

Following his victory at the DP World Tour Championship, he achieved a top ten in his next Rolex Series start at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and finished second at the Farmers Insurance Open the following week.

The Ryder Cup winner finished seventh in Paris at the Olympics two weeks ago and as one of the few players in the field with some knowledge of the new venue, it is no surprise Fantasy players are selecting him in their droves this week.

Form Horse - Bernd Wiesberger

Could Bernd be back?

If there is one thing Wiesberger has always been it is consistent and he has unsurprisingly brought that into the 2024 season, missing just one cut and recording only one other finish outside the top 25 in his first eight events.

A runner-up finish at the European Open in June suggested he may be ready to turn that good form into a win and he recorded a top ten in his next appearance at the KLM Open before making it three in six starts last time out the D+D REAL Czech Masters.

And while we may be at a different venue this week, the fact that two of his eight DP World Tour victories have come at this event has not gone unnoticed, certainly not by the 41% of players who have him in their team this week.

Wild card - Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen

Neergaard-Petersen is making just his tenth DP World Tour start but he has certainly made a splash in the game since turning professional after his graduation from the University of Oklahoma last year.

He recorded a top ten on debut at the BMW International Open and made the cut in each of the four other events he played in 2023, while also registering three top tens on the European Challenge Tour and making it to the Final Stage of the Qualifying School.

A maiden professional win at the Kolkata Challenge on the Challenge Tour in March of this year was followed by another at the UAE Challenge a month later as he recorded top tens in five consecutive events to top the Road to Mallorca Rankings.

He remains at the summit despite not having recorded a top ten since April but he will have a large and vociferous home crowd behind him this week and it is no surprise he features in 11% of teams.

Looking Back - D+D REAL Czech Masters

A huge tip of the cap to anyone who picked last week's winner David Ravetto as the Frenchman racked up an eye-watering 254 points. He arrived in the Czech Republic having made just six cuts in 16 DP World Tour events in 2024 but with a win on the European Challenge Tour and a top-three in the SDC Championship, which may have prompted his 636 picks (1.95%). And you really had a jump on your rivals if you were one of the five players (0.03%) who had him as your captain.

About the author

Chris ballard.

Chris Ballard is the author of four books and a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, where he specializes in narrative features. He's also written for the New York Times Magazine, among other publications, and his work has been anthologized in The Best American Magazine Writing and The Best American Sports Writing series. For the last two years, he's taught a class at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

Ballard joined SPORTS ILLUSTRATED in September 2000. He has covered the NBA and MLB, written two dozen cover stories, penned the back page "Point After" column and reported on everything from pigeon racing to Jake Plummer's post-football life to the Vancouver riots. He was one of five 2012 finalists for a National Magazine Award in profile writing and was the 2011 winner of The Joanie Award for a story about Cal Berkeley coxswain Jill Costello, who died of lung cancer after her senior year. Five of his stories have been optioned for feature films, including "One Shot."

Before joining SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, Ballard was an intern at the Courier-Post in Camden, NJ and attended Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. A native Californian, Ballard graduated from Pomona College, where he played basketball and was a mediocre high jumper. He lives in Berkeley with his wife, his two daughters, and two dogs. He thinks every restaurant should serve at least one quality IPA.
