Hotel Director

Other Job Titles: Hotel Director (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruise Lines, Carnival Cruise Lines), Hotel General Manager (Princess Cruises), Purser, Chief Purser (past cruise industry title)

Note: Royal Caribbean also has a position called Associate Hotel Director that consists of two months in the capacity of acting Hotel Director (while permanent Hotel Director is on leave) and two months as Food and Beverage Manager.

Job Description: The Hotel Director oversees the whole Hotel Operations including the Guest Services department, the Food and Beverage department, the Housekeeping department, and the Entertainment department.

Experience and Skills Required: For example, Royal Caribbean expects their applicants to have at least 10 years of senior management experience on a cruise line or in a luxury hotel.

Chief Purser

Contracts are another factor. Onboard positions are short-term, based on contractual agreements. For new employees, job length ranges from three months to one year. Thankfully, contracts are renewable, granting longer employment terms to those who serve with excellence.

Additionally, crew members have a low cost of living since their meals and cabins are free. Some cruise lines also cover laundry expenses and uniforms. These benefits translate into major cost-savings. Still, some jobs are especially lucrative. Here are five that pay top dollar.

1. Executive Chef

This position requires both culinary and managerial expertise. An executive chef oversees all menu planning, meal preparation, and galley staff. Both the hot and cold galleys are under the chef’s skillful leadership. The hot galley creates mouthwatering cooked meals, while the cold galley offers scrumptious buffet foods and pastries.

Also on the chef’s plate is supervising meal service in a ship’s restaurants, formal dining rooms, and buffets. Of vital importance is safe food handling. Accordingly, the executive chef ensures that all galley staff is thoroughly trained in sanitation practices. Staying within the department budget can be tough. To avoid overspending, the chef collaborates with the food and beverage manager.

Typically, executive chefs work six days a week on a shift schedule. Time off can be spent either shipboard or on land during port stays.

2. Cruise Director

Charismatic and engaging, a cruise director arranges and orchestrates social events, such as musical performances, comedy shows, guest parties, and youth activities. As “the friendly face of a passenger ship,” a cruise director is among the first to greet embarking guests. As a gracious Master of Ceremonies, they preside over Welcome Aboard Shows and Captain’s Cocktail Parties.

To produce spectacular events, the cruise director researches and books top performers, such as bandmasters, musicians, actors, dancers, and choreographers. They also rehearse with cast members. In preparing for shows, the cruise director consults with stage managers and technical crews, ensuring ideal acoustics, lighting, and set props.

While entertaining is certainly fun, the job has a serious side, too. Office work includes number crunching, tracking the entertainment budget and bills.

Currently, the cruise director salary ranges from $5,800 to $7,500 per month. The highest-paying cruise jobs require at least five years in the recreation or entertainment industry, preferably shipboard. Additionally, employers favor applicants with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality.

3. Chief Purser

As head of a ship’s accounting department, this senior officer handles all financial transactions concerning guests. For example, when passengers allocate tips, the chief purser ensures they’re awarded to intended departments and crews. When voyages end, the chief purser updates all guest accounts.

Onboard employees receive their pay from the chief purser, either in cash or via direct deposit to their bank accounts. Likewise paid are concessionaires, such as shops and kiosks. However, their earnings are commission-based. The chief purser also receives and counts cash delivered to a vessel by armored car.

This supervisory role includes managing crew pursers, a ship’s money collectors. Crew pursers gather money from Internet Cafés and vending machines, restocking them as needed. The Purser’s Office resides in a ship’s main lobby. From this central location, the office coordinates guest boarding and departure, including customs clearance.

4. Hotel Director

Also called a hotel manager, this officer is largely responsible for guest satisfaction. Several departments are under their wing, namely Food Service, Entertainment, Housekeeping, Concessions, and the Purser’s Office. In this capacity, the director tracks departmental inventories, revenues, and budgets.

When service issues arise, the hotel director assists in resolving them. For instance, working with the Purser’s Office, they help to reconcile guest billing and payment problems. Since job happiness affects crew performance, the hotel director strives to maintain pleasant working conditions.

Cruise Staff Department

Our Cruise Staff make a dramatic impact on each guest’s cruise experience by conducting a variety of onboard activities for them to enjoy. Activities range from trivia games and contests to themed parties and dance lessons. This team is also responsible for hosting an array of special events onboard, including guest performers, group exercise classes, and even the occasional conga line.

Junior Assistant Cruise Director

The Junior Assistant Cruise Director is an entry-level position on the Cruise Staff team. This team provides fun and exciting activities for guests, like trivia games, Zumba® classes, ice sculpture demonstrations, dance lessons, and arts and crafts. In this role your goal is to help the Cruise Staff provide a premium entertainment package and make our guests’ vacations memorable. You contribute to these memories by actively participating in all events with enthusiasm and dedication.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in the entertainment and hospitality field, including direct experience hosting activities for large groups. Confident/strong microphone experience is required. Entertainment talents such as dancing, singing, stage performance, hosting sports events, and arts and crafts are a plus, but candidates must be willing to participate in any/all such activities onboard as part of a team environment.

Assistant Cruise Director

In addition to the regular Cruise Staff responsibilities, the Assistant Cruise Director-DJ provides entertaining, engaging, and memorable DJ and emcee services throughout various shipboard venues.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years' DJ experience at corporate parties, weddings, or similar events; experience hosting karaoke; and a thorough knowledge of a variety of musical genres from 50s classics to today’s popular music. Deck & Technical

The Deck department is overseen by the Staff Captain and is responsible for navigating the ship as well as managing all safety-related matters, including environment and public health. This team works closely with the Technical department to ensure that all equipment is well maintained and meets international laws and regulations. The Technical department includes a variety of positions that range from entry-level roles, such as Deck Clerk, Trainees, and Cadets; to highly qualified seafarer roles, such as Environmental Officer, Security officers, and navigating officers all the way through to the ship’s Captain.

The Technical department is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operation and maintenance of all onboard machinery and equipment, covering a wide range of areas including power generation and propulsion; heating and air conditioning; and deck, hotel, and entertainment support systems. The Technical department’s mission is to provide a safe, secure, and environmentally sound operation at all times. It is a dynamic department with a wide variety of roles and career opportunities.

Deck Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for safe navigation of the ship, maintaining a 24-hour watch by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Every ship employs three Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Officer, Senior 2nd Officer, and 2nd Officer to cover the three watches. Each watch is supported by a Junior Watchkeeper in the rank of 3rd Officer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Chief Mates Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Environmental Officer

The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring the highest possible levels of compliance by shipboard staff with all established environmental standards, in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must be a licensed Deck or Engineer officer holding a minimum of either a 2nd Deck Officer or 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence, or at least five years' experience with environmental management systems.

Security Officer

Security Officers are responsible for leading a team of security personnel in monitoring guest and crew activities, investigating security matters that arise, and promptly reporting and correcting security issues in order to maintain a safe and secure shipboard environment in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a law enforcement officer or service in a maritime military/LE organization. Criminal Investigation experience is preferred as well as knowledge of ISPS code and experience with security surveillance and screening equipment.

Technical Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for maintaining a 24-hour watch in the ship’s Engine Room, by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Depending on vessel size, each ship employs either three or four Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Engineer and 2nd Engineer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Hotel Services Engineer

The Hotel Services Engineer leads an onboard Hotel maintenance team in achieving the highest standards appearance for guests and crew area, prompting defect correction in a cost-efficient manner while in line with our company strategy and core values.

The Hotel Services Engineer is responsible for all aspects of Hotel maintenance utilizing the services of the tradesmen within his/her sub-department, as well as the electrical and ventilation departments. This position works closely with the Staff Electro-Technical Officer and the Ventilation Officer when required.

Requirements Applicants must have Technical qualification at OND or HND level or equivalent; a minimum of two years' experience in hotel or hospitality industry maintenance; the ability to read and understand technical drawings and manuals; and excellent technical knowledge to be able to manage, supervise, and guide officers and tradesmen of varying levels of expertise.

Second Plumbers

Second Plumbers are responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the onboard water, sanitary, and heating systems in a cost-efficient manner that is in compliance with company safety standards.

Requirements Applicants must have experience with small repair, evacuation pumps, and welding. Prior experience in a hotel or shipboard environment is preferred.

3rd Engineer

Third Engineer Officers are responsible for operating, inspecting, and maintaining engines, machinery, and equipment in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner to the highest professional standards.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Engineers Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

2nd Electro-Technical Officer

Second Electro-Technical Officers assist in leading a team of Electro-Technical staff in the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation, inspection, and repair of all shipboard electrical systems in compliance with company safety standards to ensure the protection and safety of all guests and crew members.

Requirements Applicants must hold an HND qualification in the electro-technical field and have a minimum one year's sea-time experience.

Information Technology

The onboard Information Technology team manages and supports all shipboard IT systems and operations while also providing maximum system use. The onboard team works closely with our shoreside IT department to continually improve our shipboard systems and technology. The focus is always on the guest experience and maintaining safe operations. We do this by keeping informed of the latest technological advancements, and providing service excellence in all aspects of technology.

The IT Officer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and support of all onboard computer systems, mobile devices, physical and virtual servers, networks, point-of-sale terminals, network equipment, and peripherals. This consists primarily of level 1 and 2 support as well as system monitoring and troubleshooting. The IT Officer works closely with the shoreside IT group to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

Requirements Applicants must have at least two years' related experience in areas of user support within a medium-sized LAN; a thorough knowledge of computer systems including but not limited to Linux, MS Office, Windows Client and Server editions; and experience troubleshooting PC hardware, software applications, and network connectivity. Additional requirements include the ability to meet deadlines and maintain an attention to detail and accuracy while working under pressure in a team environment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to lift and carry IT equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Management or supervisory experience and a BS or higher in computer science, MIS, or related field is strongly preferred.

Computer System Specialist

The Computer System Specialist is responsible for the level 1 support of all onboard computer systems. This includes installing and configuring new PC system hardware, upgrading existing hardware, and supporting mobile devices. The Computer System Specialist works closely with the IT Officer to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

As a Public Health Officer you will monitor shipboard public health and infection control procedures and assist both shipboard Management and Corporate Public Health Director in overseeing the implementation and compliance with shipboard prevention and control activities at all response levels including for COVID-19, AGE, and other communicable diseases.

Additionally, you will participate as a key member of the shipboard Outbreak Management Team (OMT), coordinate the implementation and compliance with OMT decisions and oversee the correct and safe storage, par levels, condition, and use of all infection control related PPE, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and other supplies and related equipment.

Photography & Video Departments

Onboard photography is primarily centered on portrait and event photography, using both natural locations and onboard studio setups with backdrops and studio lighting. Some potential cruise workers don’t want to be away from home or at sea for that long, however. So generally some workers do prefer an arrangement called ‘work your passage’ in which you may go on shorter trips and enjoy many of the amenities that passengers do, but not take home pay or be obligated to participate in future voyages.

The third distinction involves differences in how pay is structured between roles on cruise ships. Common positions that rely on gratuity (tips) as part of income include massage therapists, bartenders, waiters, busboys and concierges. Other positions are salaried, with more common positions such as deck hands, housekeeping and cabin stewards often filled by applicants from lower income regions including Eastern Europe, parts of Asia, South America, and Africa. These roles, and particularly these roles who serve the staff such as staff waiters and snack stewards are most commonly non-tipping positions. These positions are often reserved for those without as much experience or without a good command of English. Those in non-tipping hospitality roles, however, have a good chance of being promoted to tipping roles in the future if they continue their work. One final note about income on cruise ships is that income earned on cruise ships is not subject to income tax unless you are from a country that requires you to report income earned abroad.

One final note is that in many ways the cruise industry is like other hospitality fields. Those with additional schooling or experience in hospitality positions will have a greater chance of being hired onto cruise ships and to accelerate through the ranks of the ship more quickly. People who work in this field are professionals who create positive, and sometimes memorable, experiences for their guests. They typically have a strong understanding of what it takes to run a successful business. They also understand how tourism, marketing and leadership can affect a business’s potential for growth.

This work may go unnoticed by guests. However, without it, even the most acclaimed resorts, restaurants and cruises might have trouble operating. Those who thrive in this role typically deliver outstanding service that leaves lasting impressions and may drive repeat business for their brands.

What do people with careers in hospitality management do? 

Professionals in this field foster high levels of client satisfaction in hotels, restaurants and similar establishments. They oversee the business’s daily operations to keep them running smoothly. These professionals typically have both client-facing and “back-of-house” responsibilities. Their regular job duties include the following tasks:

  • Hiring and onboarding new staff members
  • Ensuring excellent service
  • Monitoring revenue
  • Ordering necessary supplies

Effective hospitality management relies on a mixture of hard and soft skills to do the job well. In-demand skills you need for management can include the following:

  • Financial literacy
  • Time management

How to work in hospitality management? 

There are a few ways to start work in this field. The first is through a relevant bachelor’s degree. The second is with an associate degree or certificate specializing in business or hospitality. The third is by working for several years in the field and earning promotions.

Let’s explore how a relevant bachelor’s degree can impart necessary skills for a career in the hospitality sector:

1. Earn your high school diploma or its equivalent. This is a typical admissions requirement for all universities.

2. Decide whether to pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree. Associate degrees can take roughly two years to complete, while bachelor’s programs usually take four years. In addition, consider whether to pursue online or in-person classes. Online business degree programs can offer flexibility, such as the ability to work a full-time job and take classes at the same time.

3. Determine which specific bachelor’s program to pursue. An online business degree can often introduce you to many of the fundamentals of managing a business. In addition, you can choose to specialize in leadership and management via additional certificates.

4. If you have already earned a four-year degree, you may consider pursuing a Master of Management. In this program, you can fine-tune your leadership skills, strategic management competencies and ability to analyze and evaluate business data and research. 

A business degree to learn management skills

A: The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on the hospitality field that’s still being felt today. The sector experienced severe labor shortages, especially in hotels and restaurants, resulting from layoffs. Many of these locations have struggled to replace those workers.

These staffing concerns have led to stronger incentive initiatives to recruit and retain staff. Those same incentives can make a hospitality management career more appealing. If you love providing excellent customer service, creating memorable and personalized client experiences, hospitality management can be a great fit.

Q: What is the highest salary in hospitality management?

As part of our amazing Housekeeping and Laundry Team our on-board tailors are responsible for repairing Team Member uniforms, minor repairs to Guest clothing and all hotel linen.  You will be an expert with a sewing machine and a tape measure and have a keen eye for detail.   

Job Functions:

  • Maintain the threads, buttons, needles etc. at par level at all times.  
  • Order supplies as needed.  
  • Maintain sewing and other machines clean and sanitized. Report malfunctions to Laundry Manager.  
  • Maintain Tailor workshop area and surrounding spaces clean and organized.  
  • Report the tailor revenue to Laundry Manager.  
  • Repair any torn or damaged linen for the hotel department.  
  • Repair/alternate guest cloths. (Minor repairs and alternations).  
  • Make alterations to any company issued uniforms as required.  
  • Carry out repairs on soft furnishings to extend the life of such items where possible.  
  • Minor repairs of curtains and drapes.  
  • Assist with all linen and cabin supply inventories.  
  • Assist with the issuing and checking of laundry, linen and cabin supplies.  
  • Ensure the supply of rags and mop heads is always available.  
  • Ensure that duties are carried out safely and effectively.  
  • Distributing laundry detergent to crew members.  
  • Cook uniforms tracking and exchange.  
  • Crew linen exchange and tracking as scheduled.  
  • Assist Laundry Manager with new items test wash projects (measuring, quality check, etc.).  
  • Assist Linen Valets on embarkation day, - included but not limited to - Count of received bathrobes, beach towels, etc.  
  • Adhere to all Carnival Values at all times .  
  • Extend appropriate greeting to all guests and crew at every opportunity.  
  • Apply hospitality standards at all times in guest and crew areas.  
  • Follow all safety regulations (boat drills, laundry lint procedure etc).  
  • Follow all environmental, USPH and HESS - MS procedures as applicable for position.  
  • Follow up Time and Attendance policy.  

Undergo assigned trainings to develop skills & knowledge for the future positions.

Report any equipment malfunction, difficulties & concerns to the supervisor on duty.

Follow additional duties, other than listed in the job description, assigned by management due to the operational needs/shortages/changes.

Ensure beverage stations are full at all times and cleaned daily.

Engage in light conversations with guests always greet them with a smile.

You should have at least 1-2 years of experience in a similar role.

Fluency in spoken English to connect with guests is required.

Minimum guest interaction might be required.

You must pass a Seafarers Medical Fitness Examination.
