Lifestyle programming gets trendy

tlc travel and living channel

Come September 1, it will adorn a ‘hipper’ look and don a new name TLC (Travel & Living Channel). And the fact that India is part of its initial launch, globally it will be known as TLC in about 75 countries by next April-May. This shows the importance India has in Discovery’s scheme of things, especially because of the growing popularity of its channels in the nation’s market. And it’s not going to be just another makeover — the channel, which spends $800 million a year in production of fresh programmes, will come in with 15 new shows, six new hosts, 11 new seasons of existing series, and a promise of much more. Among the new shows will be Everyday Exotic, Fun Asia, Sea Nation and Bob Marley – Freedom Radio. But why this change in name? Explains Rahul Johri, Senior Vice-President and General Manager (India) of Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, “It is the culmination of the first phase of the channel’s existence, and with the new name, the channel will come in with a new dimension to lifestyle programming in innovative formats, spunkier hosts and swankier locales.” Of course, the core focus of the channel, which is lifestyle-based factual entertainment on subjects like travel, cuisine, adventure, environment, home improvement and human interest stories, will remain to be the same, he adds. In the Indian context, the channel has quite a few plans, especially local programming. “We did the groundbreaking Living With a Superstar with Shah Rukh Khan last year, which became highly popular not only in India but in Malaysia too where it was a top-rate show, and large parts of south-east Asia. We plan to take such concepts forward. India is one of the priority markets for Discovery, so having local content is very important for us,” says Johri. Included in these plans is the idea of taking the Living With a Superstar forward, with the possibility of featuring not only movie stars but also stars from other streams of society. “Discovery Travel & Living has recorded the highest growth among all Indian channels in the last six months compared to the previous six months. Among the English channels, we are positioned only after Star Movies and HBO in terms of popularity. We now plan it to take it to the next level,” he says. In fact, among Indian programmes, Vir Sanghvi’s Asian Diary has been quite popular in other countries too, he points out. The channel’s new look will be complimented by quite a few scintillating shows. For example, in Shimmy, belly-dance instructor Kim Pechet will unravel the secrets of the exotic dance form, including how it can be converted into an energetic, low-impact aerobic choreography to burn the extra calories. In Everyday Exotic, host Roger Mooking will talk about food through an interesting mix of music and gourmet, and in Fun Asia, bubbly Janet Hsieh will take the viewer on a tour of destinations beyond the regular tourist haunts. The new programming line-up also features interesting concepts like living at  sea (Sea Nation), taking up the most extreme culinary challenges (Glutton for Punishment), visiting the world’s biggest festivals, parties and events (World Party) and trying out outrageous tasks like holding molten lava in the hands with just a pair of gloves on or driving an undersized car in the world’s deadliest demolition derby. TLC sure believes in taking its viewer to the world lived in the fast lane, and with its new look and feel, it sure wants to make it even better.

Why some athletes choose to leave Olympic Village while others stay

tlc travel and living channel

PARIS -- After the first weekend of the Olympics, Coco Gauff's tennis teammates were dropping out. Not of competition, but the Olympic athlete village. According to the U.S. women's flag bearer, just two days after the Opening Ceremonies, most of her American tennis teammates have checked into hotels.

"I'm the only one really [left at the village]," Gauff said. "Like, at first I was going to move, and then when I kept meeting all these amazing athletes staying in the village, and then Rafa [Nadal] is staying in the village. So I was like, if he can do it, I can do it. But I understand why my teammates left."

It's a classic conundrum for Olympic athletes. The village, a cluster of dorms for thousands of athletes from across the world, is an unparalleled opportunity for camaraderie and community building. But it's not necessarily conducive for competitors who rely on routine and have one opportunity to perform at their best.

With a keen eye on environmental sustainability, Olympic organizers in Paris are trying to do right by the world. The beds are 100% recyclable cardboard, the food is locally sourced, and instead of air conditioning, the rooms feature geothermal cooling systems. While some athletes cherish every second of the experience, others find the environment less than ideal.

That's especially true for those who play professionally. The U.S. men's basketball team has been staying at hotels since 1992.

A USA Tennis spokesperson did not respond for comment when asked how many of its athletes left, and why, though Emma Navarro admitted to reporters that she had issues with the beds -- which became internet legend -- and said she had had a hard time sleeping since arriving.

It's not just the highest-profile (or highest-paid) athletes who are lodging complaints.

Over the first weekend, Australian water polo player Matilda Kearns posted to social media that she "already had a massage to undo the damage" from sleeping on the mattress -- which is billed as having varying levels of firmness. U.S. men's gymnast Fred Richard is proud to talk about the mattress he prearranged to have delivered ahead of the Games. Richard explained that at the Olympics his mindset is "to live like a king" -- which is hardly guaranteed in communal accommodations. USA Gymnastics quickly executed a partnership with BedJet, to provide its athletes a cooling, warming and sweat-drying system for beds to help them stay cool at night.

A U.S. Olympic Committee spokesperson said it's not uncommon for its athletes to choose not to live in the village for a number of reasons. Some start in the village and leave for training, to stay with family, or go to their competitions further away. A majority, however, stay in the village -- until they are kicked out 48 hours after their competition ends.

One issue the Americans flagged early was the lack of air conditioning. Experts had warned that 2024 could be the hottest Games in history. To be environmentally conscious, organizers installed geothermal cooling systems that maintain rooms at least 10 degrees cooler than outside temperatures, and no warmer than high 70s at night. But several federations, including the U.S., took matters into their own hands and provided portable AC units.

Then there were complaints about the food. France is known for culinary precision, and Paris organizers recruited Michelin-starred chefs Amandine Chaignot, Alexandre Mazzia and Akrame Benallal for menu input. The village prepared to serve 13 million meals and snacks between the Olympics and Paralympics, but upon arriving, athletes across several countries reported not enough of what they wanted (protein) and subpar quality.

With environmental concerns in mind, Paris 2024 wanted to source its produce locally and seasonally, and incorporate more plant-based options. The British received publicity over opening weekend when their Olympic association's chief executive Andy Anson was quoted in The Times of London as saying the food was "not adequate," included raw meat and needed to improve "dramatically." Anson said many of their athletes were relying on British-provided boxed meals instead.

A Team Great Britain spokesperson downplayed the issues to ESPN, saying that the team had always planned on having a private chef at its performance center in Clichy -- which is in the suburbs. The spokesperson said there were no instances of British athletes leaving the village as of this week.

Paris 2024 Organizers told ESPN that while the Olympic Village dining hall experienced significant demand over its first few days -- specifically eggs and grilled meats -- they've worked with suppliers to "significantly improve the quality of service." They've upped the quantity of grilled meats to 900 grams (just under 2 pounds) per athlete per day. Paris 2024 said it is now providing more than 700 kilos per day of eggs (1,543 pounds), 500 kilos (1102 pounds) per day of poultry for grilling and 200 kilos (441 pounds) per day of beef. And, as is the French way, on Monday the IOC reported that it had distributed more than 1,000 baguettes per day.

Another complaint has been transportation. While the Paris organizing committee has strongly urged media and fans to utilize the city's public transportation system, private buses charter athletes to competition. That has led to some logistical headaches with events spread across the metropolis -- specifically swimming, where the competition pool is in Nanterre, a western suburb. Six South Korean swimmers have checked out of the village and into a hotel, according to the Korea Times . The article quoted swimmer Kim Woo-min, who complained about overheating on a bus with no air conditioning and windows taped shut. Woo-min also said one of the buses got into a minor accident and "wasted time on the road after the driver had missed the turn." The swimmers' hotel is now a five-minute walk from the arena.

According to CoStar, a global provider of real estate data, Parisian hotels have been booked at much higher rates than last year's normal tourism season, but there still is availability. CoStar's data said as of Monday 84.7% of hotel rooms in Paris were occupied. So if other athletes choose to make the move, there are options.

But there are plenty of reasons to stay in the village -- and a large part centers around convenience. The IOC said Monday that more than 150 athletes were visiting the village's beauty salon. There's laundry service, coffee shops, dental clinics, free bike rentals and virtual reality studios, not to mention plenty of swag.

And of course, there's the whole concept of the village itself: camaraderie. British tennis player Andy Murray won't stop gushing about how he absolutely adores the village. It's one of the reasons he wanted to return for one more Olympics before retiring. Murray has been known as the pin king, hunting down fellow athletes to trade pins in one of the Olympics' most time-tested traditions. The younger generation, like Gauff, is taking note.

"Just the tidbits, just talking to other people and seeing their mentality," Gauff said. " I was talking to Suni Lee [on Saturday] and she said she was a little bit nervous and obviously I think she's such a GOAT, and obviously Simone [Biles.] But they're all like, still nervous. I'm like, these people are incredible and probably are going to win, but they still feel those nerves. I've learned that it's OK to feel that, and it's normal."

ESPN's Coley Harvey contributed reporting.

VIENNA (AP) — Both suspects in a foiled plot to attack Taylor Swift shows in Vienna appeared to be inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, Austrian authorities said Thursday, and investigators found bomb-making materials at one of their homes. Officials said one of the two confessed to planning to “kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue.”

Three sold-out concerts were canceled Wednesday because of the plot, devastating Swifties from across the globe. Many of them had dropped thousands of euros (dollars) on travel and lodging in Austria’s expensive capital city to attend the Eras Tour shows at the Ernst Happel Stadium, which sat empty Thursday morning.

Europe is enamored with the American superstar: The German town of Gelsenkirchen renamed itself “Swiftkirchen” before its mid-July concerts.

Concert organizers in Austria said they had expected up to 65,000 fans inside the stadium at each concert and as many as 30,000 onlookers outside, where authorities said the suspects planned to strike. The foiled attack was planned for Thursday or Friday, according to Austria’s interior minister, Gerhard Karner.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer defended the decision to cancel the concerts, saying the arrests of the suspects took place too close to the shows, scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Image

“I understand very well that those who wanted to experience the concert live are very sad,” Nehammer told a news conference Thursday. “Moms and dads are looking after their daughters and sons, who were full of enthusiasm and anticipation for this concert. But it’s also important that in such serious moments as now, it’s inevitable that safety comes first.”

Swift is also scheduled to perform at London’s Wembley stadium in five concerts between Aug. 15 and 20 to close the European leg of her record-setting Eras Tour.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that while he understood Vienna’s reasons for canceling, “We’re going to carry on.” Khan said the capital’s authorities were prepared for shows there following lessons learned from a 2017 attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, that killed 22 people.

Image

A suicide bomber had set up a knapsack with explosives in Manchester Arena. The bomb detonated at the end of Grande’s concert as thousands of young fans were leaving.

Last month, an attacker in England killed three girls and wounded 10 people in a knife attack during a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class. Swift at the time said she was ‘’completely in shock’’ over the violence.

In Austria, the main suspect confessed that he had started planning the attack in July, authorities said. The 19-year-old just a few weeks ago uploaded to the internet an oath of allegiance to the current leader of the Islamic State group.

He was “clearly radicalized in the direction of the Islamic State and thinks it is right to kill infidels,” said Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence.

Haijawi-Pirchner added that the suspect “wanted to carry out an attack in the area outside the stadium, killing as many people as possible using the knives or even using the explosive devices he had made.”

Image

During a raid of the suspect’s home in Ternitz, south of Vienna, investigators found chemical substances and technical devices that indicated “concrete preparatory acts,” said Franz Ruf, director general for public security at the Ministry of the Interior.

Authorities said they also found Islamic State group and al-Qaida material at the home of the second suspect, who is 17. That suspect, who has so far refused to talk, was employed a few days ago by a company providing unspecified services at the venue for the concerts. The 19-year-old is an Austrian with North Macedonian roots. The 17-year-old is an Austrian with Turkish and Croatian roots.

The North Macedonian Interior Ministry released a statement Thursday saying that it had received a request from Austria to look into the 19-year-old.

Both teens were arrested Tuesday. Neither of their names was released in line with Austrian privacy rules.

The suspects had undergone clear social changes recently, authorities said. The 19-year-old had quit his job but said he “still had big plans,” while the other broke up with his girlfriend. Neither suspect appeared to have a ticket to any of the shows, Haijawi-Pirchner said.

Karner said that Austria’s intelligence service had worked closely together with foreign intelligence services to capture the two teens. He did not identify the agencies, but added that the help was needed because Austrian investigators, unlike some foreign services, can’t legally monitor text messages.

The CIA declined to say Thursday whether U.S. intelligence agencies played any role in the investigation. The U.S. State Department and the broader U.S. government have been in contact with Austrian officials about the alleged plot, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

No other suspects are being sought, though a 15-year-old who had been in contact with both suspects was also interrogated by police, Karner said.

“The situation is serious. But we can also say: A tragedy was prevented,” he said.

Concert organizer Barracuda Music said in an Instagram post late Wednesday that it had “no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.”

Barracuda said all tickets would be refunded. The same message was posted under the Vienna dates on Swift’s official website . Austrian rail operator OeBB in the meantime said that it would reimburse fans for unused train tickets for the concerts.

Swift has not spoken publicly about the plot or canceled shows. “Taylor Nation,” a verified Instagram page widely believed to be run by her team, reposted the announcement from Barracuda Music in a “story,” which is only visible for 24 hours. Her main account has not posted anything.

Swift’s biggest fear has always been that such large-scale violence could take place at her concerts, the superstar told Elle magazine in 2019 ahead of her Lover Tour, which was ultimately canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The attack at Grande’s concert, as well as a 2017 mass shooting at an outdoor country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip where 58 people were killed, worried Swift as she prepared to circle the globe.

“I was completely terrified to go on (the Lover Tour) this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” she told the magazine. “There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”

An official inquiry reported in 2023 that Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, didn’t act swiftly enough on key information and missed a significant opportunity to prevent the Manchester bombing, the deadliest extremist attack in the United Kingdom in recent years.

Terrorism expert Magnus Ranstorp, based at the Swedish Defense University in Stockholm, told The Associated Press by phone that any mass public event constitutes a potential threat now.

“So we shouldn’t be surprised that these extremely popular iconic popstars that attract a massive audience will also attract terrorists that want to create fear and destruction and mayhem,” he said.

Warner Bros. Discovery takes $9-billion write-down from TV networks amid struggles

Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Warner Bros. Discovery’s rough ride continued through its most recent quarter, with the company taking a $9-billion write-down to reflect the diminishing value of its struggling television channels.

The David Zaslav-led media company posted disappointing second-quarter earnings Wednesday, sending its shares tumbling 10% in after-hours trading on Wall Street. The company continues to grapple with cost cuts to rein in its $38 billion in debt, a legacy of its 2022 takeover of the larger WarnerMedia from AT&T.

Wednesday’s earnings report, along with the massive write-down, brought into sharp focus the rapid decline of the cable television business as viewers and advertisers shift to streaming. Wall Street’s reception of its quarterly results became the latest setback for the company, which is grappling with the expected loss of its NBA contract for its TNT cable channel after next season.

The New York company generated revenue of $9.7 billion, which marked a 6% decline compared with the same quarter a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell 16% to nearly $1.8 billion compared to $2.1 billion in the year-earlier period. Last year, the company spent less on programming because of the Writers Guild of America strike. The company also introduced a popular Harry Potter video game, “Hogwarts Legacy” last year, while this year’s “Suicide Squad” game missed its mark.

But the immediate takeaway was the company’s staggering $10-billion net loss, which it said included the $9.1-billion impairment charge from its TV networks division as well as $2.1 billion in “acquisition-related amortization of intangibles and restructuring expenses.”

Warner Bros. Discovery executives told analysts that, after a rigorous review, they concluded that the company’s networks were worth $9 billion less than they were just two years ago. The company owns some of the industry’s best-known traditional channels, including CNN, TNT, HGTV, Food Network, Animal Planet and TLC.

The potential loss of TNT’s NBA contract prompted the company to conduct a review of its assets, Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels said.

“There is no one factor that is driving this impairment, Wiedenfels said. “It’s really a full reevaluation.”

The company blamed continued softness in advertising revenue coming to its linear television business. It also noted the “uncertainty related to affiliate and sports rights renewals, including the NBA.”

The earnings come less than two weeks after Warner Bros. Discovery filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the NBA , asking a judge to prohibit the league from awarding a television contract to Amazon Prime Video.

The suit, which was filed July 26 in New York State Supreme Court, alleges that the NBA breached Turner Broadcasting’s current deal by allegedly refusing to honor the cable programmer’s rights to match an offer from Amazon for the contract period that begins with the 2025-26 season. In its lawsuit, the company underscored the magnitude of the loss of the sport it has broadcast since 1989.

“NBA telecast rights are a unique asset that cannot be replaced,” the company said in its lawsuit.

Warner Bros. Discovery failed to reach an agreement with the NBA during its exclusive negotiation period earlier this spring. Last month, the league announced that it had bypassed Turner, while striking deals with Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN, NBCUniversal and Amazon. The NBA is expected to respond to Turner’s lawsuit later this month.

The league has said the lawsuit lacks merit.

David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery

Hollywood Inc.

Benched by the NBA, Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav faces tough questions

“They can’t go on like this,” Bank of America analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich said, referring to the lagging stock and string of missteps by Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav.

July 26, 2024

On the call with analysts, Zaslav declined to discuss the lawsuit, saying the matter was now in the hands of the lawyers.

“The judge will decide, and off we’ll go,” Zaslav said.

But the expected loss of the NBA contract has raised concerns among investors and analysts that Warner Bros. Discovery will not have the programming heft it needs to compete in the media landscape with better-resourced rivals.

Bank of America analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich asked a pointed question: whether Warner Bros. Discovery’s other sports rights and streaming growth would be enough to offset the declines in the traditional TV business.

“There is no doubt to us as a management team that the answer to that question is ‘yes,’” Wiedenfels said. “We believe there is tremendous upside opportunity both in the direct-to-consumer business and studio business. ... We have a strong plan that supports this.”

But Wiedenfels added that he couldn’t “perfectly predict” when the company’s turn-around efforts would take hold.

“There’s been talk about recovery... and it hasn’t really happened,” he said. “It is what it is, and we are managing it the best that we can.”

Zaslav interrupted Wiedenfels to say that key company executives have an “attack plan meeting every week — all hands on.” The quality of upcoming programming gives the company confidence that it will grow its streaming business and profits, he said.

The number of global direct-to-consumer subscribers grew to 103.3 million by the end of the quarter, which was boosted by the second season of HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” The company said its ongoing European rollout of streaming service Max was successful, with the offering now available in 65 countries and territories.

JB Perrette said, chief of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Global Streaming and Games, told analysts, “We feel great about the content slate, which is clearly a driver for us.”

The company said it repaid $1.8 billion in debt during the second quarter. It ended the April-through-June period with $3.6 billion in cash on hand.

The company has slashed its workforce. It disclosed nearly 1,000 additional job cuts late last month.

“The market conditions within the traditional business are tough,” Zaslav said. “But we feel good about where we are ... the No. 1 priority is to run this company as effectively as possible.”
