Canada ends temporary public policy allowing visitors to apply for work permits from within the country

Ottawa, August 28, 2024— Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has ended a temporary public policy that allowed visitors to apply for a work permit from within Canada, effective immediately.

IRCC introduced the policy in August 2020 to help visitors who were unable to leave the country due to COVID-19 pandemic–related travel restrictions. Under the policy, visitors in Canada could apply for a work permit without having to leave the country. In addition, foreign nationals who had held a work permit in the previous 12 months but who changed their status in Canada to “visitor” could apply to work legally in Canada while waiting for a decision on their new work permit application.

While the temporary policy was set to expire on February 28, 2025, IRCC is ending the policy as part of our overall efforts to recalibrate the number of temporary residents in Canada and preserve the integrity of the immigration system. IRCC is also aware that some bad actors were using the policy to mislead foreign nationals into working in Canada without authorization.

IRCC will continue to process applications submitted before August 28, 2024 under the policy.

Please visit our website for information on how to apply for a work permit .

Prince Harry Will Travel to New York Without Meghan Markle Next Month

The Duke of Sussex "will be in town to advance a number of his patronages and philanthropic initiatives."

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in Bogota, Colombia on August 16, 2024.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently wrapped a four day royal tour of Colombia . During the trip, Meghan paid tribute to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana , by wearing some of her most iconic jewelry. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also met with Colombia's Invictus Games team , and spoke Spanish when meeting young students. Now, it's been revealed where Prince Harry will travel to for his next official engagement.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex told MarieClaire.com that Harry will travel to New York City during the UN General Assembly High-level Week and Climate Week. While Climate Week starts on September 22, High-level Week commences on September 23. During the visit, Prince Harry "will be in town to advance a number of his patronages and philanthropic initiatives," the Duke of Sussex's spokesperson said.

Perhaps most importantly, Harry will support many of his patronages and philanthropic organizations he holds dear. "He will participate in engagements with African Parks, The HALO Trust, The Diana Award, and Travalyst," the spokesperson explained. The Archewell Foundation, which Prince Harry founded alongside his wife, Duchess Meghan, will also play an important role in the Duke's trip to New York.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan visited Colombia in August 2024.

Prince Harry previously revealed his desire to travel widely in support of crucial causes and organizations. "It is hugely important for us to meet directly with people, supporting our causes and listening, in order to bring about solutions, support and positive change," the Duke of Sussex told People back in May.

Harry also noted that attending events virtually wasn't always as meaningful as attending in person. "There’s only so much one can do from home and over Zoom, so we look forward to traveling more because the work matters," he told the publication. "Whether it's the Archewell Foundation, Invictus or any of our other causes, there will always be reasons to meet the people at the heart of our work."

Prince Harry's trip also coincides with the third Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit , which will be co-hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies in New York on September 24. Prince William is the founder and president of the Earthshot Prize , although it's unclear if he will be in attendance.

Following the success of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's royal tour of Colombia, fans of the couple will be eagerly awaiting the couple's next joint trip.

Second Summer offers a unique charm that only Cape Cod can provide. The beaches, still warm from the summer sun, are less crowded, the roads are clearer, and there’s a peacefulness in the air that invites us to savor the beauty of our surroundings. It’s a time when we can enjoy the Cape in a more personal way—whether it’s a stroll along the shoreline, a visit to our favorite local restaurant, or simply taking in the stunning sunsets that paint the sky with hues of gold and pink.

Here at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce we started letting the rest of the world know about “Second Summer.” Instead of an economic dead-stop after Labor Day, we have rounded out the shoulder season, allowing the economic benefits of the summer to carry through the fall and into the holiday season.

As we transition into this special season, it’s also a moment to reflect on the incredible contributions of our summer workforce, particularly the J-1 students who have journeyed from across the globe to join us. These young people bring not only their skills but also their cultures, languages, and perspectives, enriching our community in countless ways. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment are essential to making our summer a success, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.

In celebration of our J-1 workers, the Cape Cod Chamber – in partnership with Cultural Homestay International and Intrax Work Travel – is hosting an Exchange Day event today, August 26th, at 3 p.m. at the JFK Museum in Hyannis. Exchange Day, a nationwide celebration of international exchanges, provides exchange program participants an opportunity to learn about American customs and culture, give back to the local community, and (most importantly) have fun. Attendees will get to enjoy a tour of the JFK Museum, scavenger hunt and complimentary dinner.

To the J-1 students who are now returning home, we thank you for your dedication and for being a vital part of our Cape Cod family. Your efforts have helped us create memorable experiences for visitors and locals alike, and we hope that your time here has been as rewarding for you as it has been for us. You will always have a special place on Cape Cod, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future – whether as workers, visitors, or friends.

As we embrace Second Summer, let us take this opportunity to appreciate the quieter moments, the lingering warmth, and the enduring beauty of our beloved Cape Cod. Here’s to a season of reflection, gratitude, and the continued celebration of all that makes our community so special.

State ferry workers, 16 unions that represent them make busy Labor Day travel weekend possible

  • Justin Fujioka , communications, 206-718-9298
  • WSF media hotline, communications, 206-402-8070

Travelers should plan for long vehicle boarding lines as 300,000 set sail Aug. 29 to Sept. 2

SEATTLE – Labor Day travel is expected to attract more than 300,000 people aboard Washington State Ferries from Thursday, Aug. 29, through Monday, Sept. 2. As many travelers hit the road, sea or air, the holiday is also a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of the workers who keep our communities and industries thriving.

Labor organizations are crucial to WSF’s operations, which include a workforce of nearly 2,000 employees represented by 16 unions.

“I deeply appreciate the dedication and hard work of our frontline staff, who often sacrifice time with their family and friends during holidays to keep our system running,” said WSF Assistant Secretary Steve Nevey. “We also extend our deepest thanks to the unions that represent them, advocating for the rights and well-being of our workforce.”

The crews have been especially busy during the peak summer travel season. So far this summer WSF has completed nearly 40,000 sailings and carried more than 6 million riders from the start of Memorial Day weekend travel (Thursday, May 23) through Sunday, Aug. 25.

Labor Day weekend travel tips

To help navigate the Labor Day weekend crowds, customers are encouraged to download and use the Washington State Department of Transportation’s mobile app or visit the WSF website before heading to the terminal.

The app and website allow users to:

  • See sailing schedules by route .
  • View live terminal conditions and traffic cameras.
  • Check for rider alerts that provide service updates by route.
  • Monitor a real-time map for the location of each operating vessel.
  • Make vehicle reservations for the Anacortes/San Juan Islands or Port Townsend/Coupeville route.

Busy travel times

The busiest sailings for vehicles will likely be westbound (or onto an island) Thursday, Aug. 29, through Saturday, Aug. 31, then eastbound (or off island) Saturday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 2. To reduce or eliminate waiting, riders may consider taking an early-morning or late-night sailing or using transit to walk or bike onto the ferry if possible.

Holiday schedules

On Labor Day, Sept. 2, there will be a few holiday changes to the daily schedules for the Anacortes/San Juan Islands, Edmonds/Kingston, Point Defiance/Tahlequah and Port Townsend/Coupeville routes. The Seattle/Bainbridge Island run will operate a Saturday timetable and the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route will use the two-boat weekend schedules. Holiday sailings are marked on the schedules for each route.

People using  state highways to get to the ferry terminal should plan for potential holiday travel backups and delays by checking real-time traffic information on the WSDOT mobile app or online using the  WSDOT travel map feature.

Labor unions represented at WSF

As part of running the ferry service, WSF partners with following unions representing ferries’ workers:

  • Ferry Agents, Supervisors and Project Administrators Association
  • Inlandboatmen’s Union of the Pacific
  • International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 79
  • International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers Local 104
  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46
  • International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen & Helpers of America Local 117 and Local 174

I Asked a Nurse What's in Her Amazon Cart, and It's Full of Comfy Items for Long Flights and Shifts — From $9

These 10 finds always stay in her bag for long travel days or 12-hour night shifts.

intrax work and travel

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Nurses, much like travelers, rely on an arsenal of tried-and-true products to get through the day, which is often long and grueling. One of my closest friends, Amanda Hyman, is a nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, so I know this firsthand. Her ability to stay organized and power through long night shifts is crucial. So, it’s no surprise that the products she relies on can fit seamlessly into both her daily life and travel routine.

Curious to know how the two interlap, I asked her to share the Amazon products that never leave her bag, whether she's headed to work or on a trip. Her wish list included travel essentials like a blackout eye mask that lets her sleep during the day after grueling 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. shifts, as well as the most comfortable shoes that keep her feet happy during those long hours. Below are the 10 products Hyman swears by for maintaining comfort, staying organized, getting quality rest on the go, and more. Luckily, you don't have to be in the medical field to benefit from her picks; they'll help you travel smarter and make your next adventure smoother and more enjoyable.

Weiman Electronic and Screen Disinfecting Wipes

Hyman is extremely cautious about spreading germs, especially since she works in a hospital and wants to avoid bringing them back to her apartment. To keep unsuspecting items like her cell phone clean, she uses these disinfectant wipes, which have more than 4,000 five-star ratings at Amazon, on both the front and back of it as soon as she gets home. She follows the same routine when traveling by plane, wiping down not just her phone but also the seatback TV screen, which is a high-touch area.

Coolover Copper Compression Socks

Like many other nurses, Hyman spends long hours on her feet during her 12-hour shifts. Standing for extended periods can lead to aching, tired, and swollen legs and feet, which can also happen when you’re traveling on a plane. To promote blood flow and reduce swelling at work and in the air, she "absolutely loves" the Coolover Compression Socks. "I'm prone to swollen feet, so these compression socks are a lifesaver," she tells Travel + Leisure . "They help relieve pain and improve circulation, which means less swelling not only when I'm at work, but also when I'm on a plane."

Alonefire LED Clip-on Flashlight

"Working the night shift means I have to be mindful of not waking up patients when checking on them during the night," Hyman explains. "This clip-on flashlight is perfect for seeing what I’m doing without turning on the room light, whether it's for drawing labs or administering IV medications." While it’s incredibly useful during her shifts, she notes that it’s also handy for travel as it can be clipped onto a book or anything else she might need on a night flight.

Simple Modern Tumbler

The Simple Modern 40-ounce Tumbler is a must-have for travel and everyday use — and Hyman loves that she doesn’t have to worry about her drink temperature changing throughout her shift. It's designed to fit in most cup holders, is leak-resistant, and keeps liquids hot for up to 12 hours or cold for 24 hours. With nearly 6,000 five-star reviews , it's earned high praise from customers, who rave about its long-lasting temperature retention, thoughtful design, ample size, and impressive durability. Also, since the water bottle keeps drinks cold for so long, it’s a great motivator to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Amazon Essentials Full-zip Fleece Jacket

Comfort is key when traveling, and this fleece jacket makes it easy to stay cozy at any destination with its layerable design. You can throw it on over lighter clothing if it gets chilly or add extra layers if you didn’t anticipate colder weather. Hyman also keeps it in her work bag for when the hospital gets chilly, enjoying the extra comfort it provides whenever she needs it.

MathCat Seamless Workout Shirts

During the chillier months, Hyman wears the Matchcat Workout Shirt under her scrub top to stay warm. She also loves traveling in these shirts because they’re incredibly comfortable and breathable. Whether you’re heading to the gym, going for a walk, or jetting off on a trip, these shirts are versatile enough to become a staple in your wardrobe. Plus, they’re currently 20 percent off.

Hatch Restore 2 Sunrise Alarm Clock

Getting quality rest is Hyman's top priority when she's off the clock, but it didn't come easy at first. "It took a lot of getting used to, learning to sleep during the day and be awake at night," she began. "What really helped me transition was the Hatch Restore Alarm Clock." Unlike a traditional alarm clock, this one allows you to customize your wake-up experience with soothing, gentle sounds instead of a harsh, jarring alarm. "The sunrise feature helps me wake up at unusual hours by mimicking natural daylight," she added. This feature can also come in handy for those early morning flights when it's still dark outside or for anyone trying to kick jet lag.

BeeVines Sleep Mask

Hyman’s sleep routine also includes her trusty eye mask, which ensures she gets the rest she needs even when it’s bright out. This can be a game-changer when traveling, as it blocks out any unwanted light or distractions on a plane, in a hotel room, and so on. Her favorite eye mask set is currently 40 percent off, so now is a great time to grab them for your next flight and enjoy peaceful, undisturbed sleep.

Amazon Basics Expandable Hardside Carry-on Luggage

For short-term traveling, Hyman swears by the Amazon Basics Carry-on Luggage. It’s perfectly sized to meet carry-on requirements for both domestic and international flights and has the option to expand if you need extra room for an additional pair of jeans or a backup outfit. With nearly 36,000 five-star ratings, it’s a well-loved choice. One reviewer shared , "This suitcase is fantastic. My mom uses it for every trip and won’t consider anything else. It’s incredibly sturdy and rolls smoothly."

New Balance Women's Fresh Foam Arishi V4 Running Shoes

Comfortable shoes are essential for both nurses and travelers, and Hyman highly recommends the New Balance Arishi V4 Shoes. They offer ample cushioning and provide the support you need for long days on your feet. Unlike most arch-support shoes, these sneakers eliminate discomfort without sacrificing style; their neutral color makes them easy to pair with any outfit (which means you can get away with packing fewer shoes). They’re also affordable with their under-$100 price tag, which is currently marked down to $63 for a limited time.

A strike vote is a normal part of the negotiating process and does not mean that any disruption will take place. Find out more about the bargaining process.

Ukraine war latest: Extra security at 'extremely exposed' nuclear plant - as Moscow takes action against US newspapers

Russian officials are stepping up security measures at a nuclear plant in Kursk, where Ukrainian forces have seized land. Meanwhile, Moscow has banned entry to more than 20 US journalists.

We'll be back with more updates and analysis tomorrow, but before we go, here's a recap of the key developments that took place today:

  • A Russian missile struck Volodymyr Zelenskyy's home town of Kryvyi Rih;
  • Ukrainian drones set oil tanks on fire at a depot in Russia's Rostov region and a depot in Russia's western region of Kirov, according to reports;
  • Russia said it wanted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take a "more objective and clearer" stance on nuclear energy after its chief visited Kursk's nuclear power plant;
  • Russian troops claimed to have defused an unexploded US-supplied missile that they said was shot down and found near the Kursk nuclear facility;

Pavel Durov, the chief executive of Telegram, has been charged with allegedly allowing criminal activity on the messaging app.

French judges have barred Mr Durov from leaving France pending further investigation, but he has avoided being held in custody with a €5m bail.

The billionaire was arrested in France on Saturday after his private jet landed at Le Bourget airport outside Paris.

The Russian-born entrepreneur - who became a French citizen in 2021 - is accused of operating a platform which is being used for child sexual abuse material and by organised crime gangs, for drug trafficking and fraud.

Telegram has insisted it abides by EU laws and its moderation is "within industry standards and constantly improving".

Its statement added: "It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for abuse of that platform."

Mr Durov's arrest in France, and four days of questioning, has caused outrage in Russia.

Paper planes - representing Telegram's logo - haver been placed in Moscow in support of the billionaire.

Some government officials claim his detention was politically motivated and proof of the West's double standard on freedom of speech.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call that Russia was ready to provide Durov with all necessary assistance given his Russian citizenship, but that his French citizenship complicated the situation.

We have been reporting today on Russia's advances in the direction of the key mining city of Pokrovsk, which sits in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region.

Moscow sees taking control of the city as an important stepping stone to annexing the entire Donbas region.

And Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned the situation near Pokrovsk is "difficult".

Now, security expert Maria Avdeeva has shared footage from inside Pokrovsk and said the city is "tense" and "preparing for the looming Russian offensive".

NATO members have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen Ukraine's defences at a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council today.

"Ukraine continues to intercept Russian missiles on a daily basis, saving countless lives. But Ukraine's ability to maintain their defences requires increased supply and more support," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement.

"In the wake of the latest Russian assault, allies today reaffirmed they are stepping up their military aid to Ukraine.

"We must continue to provide Ukraine with the equipment and munitions it needs to defend itself against Russia's invasion. This is vital for Ukraine's ability to stay in the fight."

The fear of escalation by Western allies is the "biggest problem" faced by Kyiv as it battles Russia, Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba has said.

"Ever since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, the biggest problem Ukraine has been facing is the domination of the concept of escalation in the decision-making processes among our partners," Mr Kuleba said.

The Ukrainian minister made the comment during a conversation with Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

He also said: "The war is always about a lot of hardware: money, weapons, resources but the real problems are always here, in the heads.

"Most of our partners are afraid of discussing the future of Russia. This is something that is very upsetting because if we do not speak about the future of the source of threat, then we cannot build strategy."

Ukraine has relied heavily on the West to supply it with weapons and hardware and financial assistance to hold out against Russia.

But Kyiv is pushing the West to give it the long-range weapons - and the authorisation - to strike targets deep inside Russian territory. It also wants help shooting down incoming missiles.

The United Nations Security Council are meeting to discuss the latest situation in Ukraine.

It comes after a Russian missile struck Volodymyr Zelenskyy's home town of Kryvyi Rih today.

You can watch the meeting in the stream above.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that a Russian airstrike earlier in the day on the eastern town of Kupyansk had resulted in some deaths, without providing a number.

The Ukrainian leader has also said in his nightly address that the West should lift restrictions on long-range airstrikes by Ukraine because it would help end the war.

"There was a strike with a guided aerial bomb on Kupyansk - right in the city centre, people were under the rubble. Unfortunately, there are fatalities," Mr Zelenskyy said.

Kupyansk, which is located 22 miles from the border with Russia, was hit in the afternoon, local officials said.

The strike injured 14 people and damaged the building of the city hall, the regional prosecutor's office wrote earlier on the Telegram messaging app.

Russian TV has begun filming for a fictionalised comedy series in which Joe Biden travels to Russia undercover.

The drama will centre around the US president travelling to the country to find out "why sanctions aren't working against Russians", the Moscow Times reports, citing the Russian television channel TNT.

While in Russia, Mr Biden loses his passport and ends up living in a Soviet-era flat and working as an English teacher so he can make money and return home.

Russian actor Dmitriy Dyuzhev is set to play the role of Mr Biden.

The comedy, which is entitled Goodbye, is set to premiere next year.

Russia has banned entry to 92 US citizens, including journalists, lawyers and the heads of what it claims are key military and industrial firms upholding "Washington's Russophobic stance".

The list, published on Telegram by Moscow's foreign ministry, includes 14 Wall Street Journal employees, five New York Times journalists and four from the Washington Post.

The ministry said it was targeting editorial staff and reporters from "leading liberal-globalist publications" involved in producing and disseminating what it described as "fakes" about the Russian armed forces.

It comes weeks after the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was freed by Moscow in an extensive prisoner swap after nearly 500 days in a Russian jail on espionage charges.

The ministry wrote: "In response to the Russophobic course pursued by the Biden administration with the declared goal of 'inflicting a strategic defeat on Moscow', an integral part of which has become 'carpet' sanctions against Russian politicians, representatives of the business community, scientists and cultural figures, journalists and media structures, entry into the Russian Federation is permanently closed for 92 US citizens."

For context : This is not the first time the Kremlin has banned dozens of media representatives from the West.

Since launching its war in Ukraine, it has cracked down on Russian and foreign independent news outlets.

Legislation was also introduced soon after the war to criminalise media outlets spreading "false information" about the Russian army.

Additional security measures will be introduced at Kursk's nuclear plant from tomorrow, authorities in the region have said.

The measures will see the entrance to the town of Kurchatov, where the plant is located, temporarily restricted, Alexei Smirnov, acting governor of the Kursk region, wrote on Telegram .

"Despite the fact that the security of the Kursk nuclear power plant is maximally ensured, the armed forces of Ukraine do not abandon their attempts to enter the city," he said.

"In this regard, and also in order to ensure additional security measures, the operational headquarters has decided to restrict entry to Kurchatov in the near future."

The statement comes after Russian troops claimed they had defused an unexploded US-supplied missile that was shot down and found near the Kursk nuclear facility (see post at 10.15am).

What do we know about the plant?

Yesterday, nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi issued a warning about the danger of a nuclear accident at Kursk's nuclear power plant.

Mr Grossi said the plant's nuclear reactor was "extremely exposed" to attack and the facility lacked the containment dome and protective structure that is typical of modern nuclear power stations.

"This is why we believe that a nuclear power plant of this type, so close to a point of contact or a military front, is an extremely serious fact that we take very seriously," he said.

OHSS | Office of Homeland Security Statistics

Nonimmigrants are foreign nationals admitted temporarily to the United States within classes of admission that are defined in section 101(a)(15) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

Examples of nonimmigrant classes of admission include foreign government officials, temporary visitors for business and pleasure, aliens in transit, treaty traders and investors, academic and vocational students, temporary workers, exchange visitors, athletes and entertainers, victims of certain crimes, and certain family members of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs).

Unlike people granted LPR, or "green card" status, who may live in the United States essentially without restrictions, nonimmigrants are authorized to enter the country for specific purposes. Nonimmigrants’ duration of stay and lawful activities, such as employment, travel, and accompaniment by dependents, are prescribed by their class of admission.

Temporary workers and their families

Temporary worker visas are for persons who want to enter the United States for employment lasting a fixed period of time, and are not considered permanent or indefinite. To work in the United States temporarily as a lawful nonimmigrant, temporary workers must qualify for the available visa category based on the planned employment purpose. The steps in the process before applying for a visa vary.

Students and Exchange visitors and their dependents

The United States supports international education and welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors. Students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsors before applying for visas.

Diplomats and other representatives

Diplomats and other foreign government officials traveling to the United States to engage solely in official duties or activities on behalf of their national government must obtain specific visas prior to entering the United States.

Temporary visitors for pleasure

Foreign travelers to the United States for short visits, for example tourism, vacation, visiting family and friends, or medical treatment, need visitor visas unless they qualify for entry under the Visa Waiver Program .

Temporary visitors for business

Foreign travelers coming to the United States to conduct temporary business, for example business meetings and consultations, attending conventions and conferences, or negotiating contracts, need visitor visas unless they qualify for entry under the Visa Waiver Program .
