History and description

In the first decade of the 20th century, Manchester United played their home matches at a 50,000-stadium at Bank Street, when then president Davies began planning for a new stadium with double that capacity. A site was chosen near Trafford Park industrial estate, and architect Archibald Leitch was appointed to design the stadium.

Old Trafford officially opened on 19 February 1910 with a match between Manchester and Liverpool (3-4). The stadium at that time consisted of one covered seating stand and open terraces on the other three sides. Capacity was slightly over 80,000.

Few changes were made to the stadium until the construction of a roof over the United Road terrace in 1934.

In 1939, Old Trafford recorded its highest attendance of 76,962 during an FA Cup semi-final match between Wolves and Grimsby Town.

Due to its proximity to Trafford Park industrial estate, Old Trafford got heavily damaged by German air raids during World War 2. It took eight years to rebuilt the stadium, the delays being caused by limited post-war resources, and during that time United played at Maine Road , the ground of rivals Manchester City.

In 1949, Man United moved back to a reconstructed, though smaller, Old Trafford. Incremental improvements and expansions were made in the following decades, which culminated in the complete renovation of the United Road (North) Stand in the 1960s. This stand also held the first private boxes to be constructed at a British ground.

Old Trafford was one of the playing venues of the 1966 World Cup, during which it hosted three group matches. In those years, the capacity of the stadium fluctuated around 60,000.

Old Trafford got gradually further improved in the 1970s and 1980s, including new and better cover, increased seating areas, and improved executive facilities. At the same time, however, the rise of hooliganism also resulted in the installation of security fences separating the stands from the pitch.

In the early 1990s, plans were made to convert the stadium into an all-seater. This involved the demolition and replacement of the famous Stretford End terraces and the placement of seats in the lower-tiers of the other stands.

Old Trafford got selected to be one of the playing venues of the 1996 European Championships, and as a result a new North Stand opened in 1995. By the start of Euro 1996 the stadium could hold about 56,000 fans.

During the Euro 1996 tournament, Old Trafford hosted three group matches, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between the Czech Republic and France (0-0).

In the years following, second tiers were added to the East and West Stand, raising capacity to 68,000 seats.

In 2006, the stadium reached its current capacity when stands got built in the upper-tier corners on both sides of the North Stand.

Old Trafford hosted its only European final in 2003, when the Champions League final between Milan and Juventus (0-0) was played at the stadium.

In 2011, the stadium’s North Stand got renamed Sir Alex Ferguson Stand in honour of the club’s long-time manager.

Old Trafford’s South Stand remains the only two-tiered stand of the stadium, but expansion possibilities are limited due to the railway line that runs behind the stand. While Man United has indicated that a further expansion to 95,000 seats remains a possibility, no concrete plans exist at the moment.

How to get to Old Trafford

Old Trafford is located just over 2 miles south-west from Manchester’s city centre and just under 3 miles from Manchester Piccadilly Station.

If arriving by car from the M60, take junction 7&8 and turn onto Chester Road (A56) northbound. Follow Chester Road for about 2 miles and turn left onto Sir Matt Busby Way (access closed on matchdays).

If using public transport, the stadium is best reached by Metrolink overground metro. From Piccadilly Station it is a 15-minute journey to Old Trafford station, which lies a 5-minute walk away from the stadium.

On matchdays a special train service is provided from most Manchester city centre stations to Old Trafford Stadium rail station.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Old Trafford

Old Trafford is located in an area that is a mix of residential housing and offices and light industry. The area lacks excitement, though there are a good few hotels around if you wish to stay close to the stadium.

Hotel Football Manchester , backed by a number of former United players such as Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, lies right next to the stadium and gets great reviews. Chesters Hotel , Victoria Warehouse Hotel , and Premier Inn are also at short walking distance and somewhat cheaper.

There are also various hotels a little further north around the quays, which includes such chains as Ibis Budget , Ramada , and Holiday Inn Express . There are naturally also many options in Manchester’s city centre , a short Metrolink journey away, though these hotels tend to be a little more expensive.

The few pubs close to the stadium fill up quickly on matchdays, which is good for the atmosphere, but if you want to sit down for some food, it may be wiser to do so in the centre. In particular the Deangate Locks and Castlefield area are perfectly situated on the Metrolink.

Match tickets for league games tend only to go on sale for club members. The cheapest membership in combination with a ticket costs £20.00 per year. Even though Manchester United almost always play for a full house, tickets for games against lower-profile teams will often be easily available for club members if bought in advance, especially for seats at the upper tiers.

Ticket prices range from £31.00 for a lower-tier seat behind one of the goals to £53.00 for a central seat at the Sir Alex Ferguson or South Stand.

Old Trafford stadium tours

Manchester United organise guided stadium tours that include the dugouts, players tunnel, and the Manchester United Museum. The tour lasts about 70 minutes, which does not include time spent in the museum.

Tours run seven days a week except matchdays and only run until 1:00 pm the day before a European home match. Tours run about every 30 minutes between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm, but opening times and frequency depend on the season. The museum is opened from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but closes on weekend matchdays and three hours before a non-weekend match.

i have been been to old trafford twenty times for matches/tours and i have to say it was an excellent experience.the last time i went i brought my two sons and my partner and we had an amazing time.we travel from ireland at least once a season.the stadium is amazing.

Been to Old Trafford on a number of occasions. But for all the money the club boast about making. I find they spend very little on the stadium. Very poor quality compared to some of there rivals in the Premiership & around Europe. Should think more about the comfort of the fans than the profit the share owners make.

When my family went there the ticket for the stadium tour sold out already and they offered us stadium looking which half the time but only 4£ less than the original stadium tour price (original stadium tour £18, stadium looking £14). I’ll tell you it is not worth your penny at all. You only get to see the stadium for 8 minutes with 5 minutes spent from the person doing unimportant chit chat or insignificant information regarding the stadium that they didn’t even come up with (they had to be asked to tell us the information). And then, after the unimportant chit chat, they only let us to take pictures for 3 minutes! With the Old Trafford person kept mentioning we don’t have much time, as if hurrying us to go! When I asked for a help from the guide to take a picture of us, at first he was saying there was no time at all to take a picture but he said, “Okay, just one picture”. And my father clearly asked him for help to take our picture with the Old Trafford Stadium writing on the back and he was saying a nonsense reason, “I’m not used to this kind of camera.” He didn’t need to do anything technical with that camera, it was only pointing to a good angle of four people standing with the field as the background and Old Trafford writing on the back and he can’t even do that?! After that he basically asked us to leave the field (bare in mind it was only 3 minutes after they let us started to take photos and we were the last slot of the day which meant they weren’t hurried by another slot coming in) and I complained but that guide just didn’t give any care whatsoever. Such a horrible, horrendous service from the guide. It was awful and I can say myself, the worst day of my summer because I expected so much from this great football club stadium service. But basically they only want money and don’t care if people is a fan or not. If they offer the stadium looking only, better not take it, it’s better to take the whole package of the stadium tour.

I went to Old Trafford 10 times so far. Great place to watch football. I am a fan of Manchester United and try to go at least one a year. There is a lot of parking options around the stadium. Tickets are usually available to members for most games.

Excellent pitch, nice dugouts and dressing room as well. Superb tunnel exit through tiers,a way also sitting in the manager’s sit (sir Alex Ferguson).confort seats headed around tiers.lastly Best among the Rest.

Old Trafford Tour: An Overview

History of old trafford.

Taking a throwback to the formative years, the Old Trafford Football Stadium was formed in the year 1902. The stadium was originally designed by an architect named Archibald Leitch who belonged to Scotland. The stadium was earlier designed to host 100,000 audience members followed by the different stands representing their own significant seating patterns. The estimated budget for the construction was calculated to 60,000 pounds. However, due to the increase in the budget during the construction, the capacity of the stadium was then reduced to approximately 75000.

The stadium hosted its first football match in the year 1910 when it became a host to the Liverpool Football Team. The stadium also became a depot for the Second World War during the year 1936 and faced damage due to the bombing. After suffering all such dreads, the stadium was then transformed into an all-seater during the 1980s after the government’s demand for the conversion. Since then, Old Trafford has undergone various other expansions including the development of different stands, The Trophy Rooms, and other attractions that were added in the 1990s and 2000s. Manchester United Museum and Old Trafford football stadium tour

Old Trafford is the UK’s second-largest football stadium after Wembley Stadium. Known as the Theatre of Dreams, it has been the home of Manchester United football club since 1910 (although the club shared Maine Road with Manchester City between 1941 and 1949 after Old Trafford was bombed during the Second World War).

In addition its role as Manchester United’s home ground, the stadium has hosted FA Cup semi-finals, England matches, the 1966 World Cup, Euro 96, 2003 Champions League Finals and 2012 Olympic Games football matches plus rugby league matches including the annual Super League Grand Final.

Visitors can take a tour of the stadium and also visit the Manchester United Museum.

Note: the Old Trafford football stadium is not to be confused with the Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground, which is a different stadium, a 10-minute walk away.

What to see at the Manchester United Museum and Old Trafford football stadium tour

In addition to actually watching a football match at Old Trafford, it is also possible to take a tour of the stadium and visit the Manchester United Museum.

Old Trafford football stadium tour

A tour of the stadium is a must for Manchester United fans and football fans in general. The 80-minute tour lets you see parts of the stadium that are normally off-limits to the public including access to the players’ dressing room, the tunnel, players’ dugout plus the press room and VIP room.

Areas covered by the tour are subject to change as this is a working football stadium and the tours need to fit in with match preparations and the stadium’s maintenance schedule.

Manchester United Museum

Stadium tours also give you access to the Manchester United Museum. The museum has displays depicting the club’s history and the tour allows you to go behind the scenes at Old Trafford stadium.

Visiting Old Trafford football stadium

Old Trafford is located immediately south of Salford Quays and 4.8 km (3 miles) southwest of Manchester city centre.

Stadium tour tickets include admission to the Manchester United Museum and it is not possible to buy a ticket to just visit the museum without also taking a tour.

The Old Trafford Experience is a premium package that includes the stadium tour and museum admission as well as a meal at the stadium’s Red Cafe.

The Legends tour is a much more expensive option where you take the tour with one of the team’s legendary players who can give you inside information and answer questions about the team.

Even if you haven’t booked an Old Trafford Experience ticket, you are still able to have a bite to eat at the Red Cafe on the third level of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. The cafe is open to the public throughout the year, and not just on match days.

Visitors to the stadium are also able to visit the 1,580m² (17,000 sq ft) Megastore, which has a huge range of Manchester United merchandise with over 800 different product lines. On match days over 10,000 people pass through the Megastore, although it will be less crowded if you visit after your tour.

Stadium tours last for around 80 minutes, although you should also allow extra time to visit the museum. Most people allow around two hours for their visit.

Stadium tours do not operate on match days.

Manchester United to access £77bn with revolutionary tech inside new Old Trafford

An exciting insight into the new technology expected to be used in the new United stadium.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s plans to either remodel Old Trafford or build a new stadium is possibly the biggest changes he’s instigating since becoming a minority owner at Manchester United.

The INEOS owner is keen to develop the infrastructure at United where it’s been relatively unaltered for two decades under the complete Glazer ownership.

Since 2010, United have spent £98 million on their infrastructure with all the Big Six, and Brentford, Brighton and Leicester spending a considerable amount more.

A good marker of how little has changed over time is the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid in 2010 and returned in 2021, noticing very little change with the facilities.

Already, Ratcliffe has stepped up and authorised a £50 million refurbishment of the Carrington training groups which has seen the men’s first team move into the women’s section of the training complex.

However, this is nothing compared to the next instalment in the upgrades to United’s infrastructure.

Manchester United’s new Old Trafford

Whilst there have been a few plans in mind with United’s home ground, including developing Old Trafford further or demolishing it to rebuild a new stadium, the new most likely way forward will be keeping the iconic ground.

The INEOS owner is now looking at scaling down Old Trafford to become a 30,000 seater venue hosting matches for the Women’s team and the academy squads, whilst building a completely new stadium next door.

Doing this will preserve the history of Old Trafford, such as the iconic player and coaching statues of Matt Busby, Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Denis Law and Jimmy Murphy, as well as the tributes of the tragic Munich disaster in 1958, such as the Munich clock and the Munich tunnel.

However, the stadium next door is due to be a state of the are, 100,000 seated venue, being billed as the “Wembley of the North”.

It’s expected that the development of the ground will cost around £2 billion, however, that’s nothing compared to the gold mine their going to be tapping into in a revolutionary way.

Revolutionary Technology at the new Old Trafford

Whilst designing the new stadium, it’s understood that Ratcliffe’s team have visited a number of stadia and architecture firms to help with their plans.

One stadium they visited was the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which just so happened to host one of the pre-season tour fixtures. The LA stadium saw United’s opening tour game against Arsenal, with the Red Devils suffering a 2-1 loss.

The 70,000 seater home of the LA Rams NFL team is considered one of the best multi-purpose venue in the world, regarded this way from their ground breaking facilities.

One of their unique features which United want to replicate is the use of Augmented Reality, or AR.

Augmented Reality allows for technology to enhance the reality your seeing, with a screen or camera adding extra objects or information to what’s in front of you.

A great example of this is Snapchat or Instagram filters which add things to the image before a photo is taken, or games like Pokemon Go which augment Pokemon into the real world through screen.

But how is this going to be used in the new stadium?

Well, the SoFi Stadium has an on-site screening venue which allows fans to watch all manner of sports fixture as though they were actually in the stadium.

Much like with the camera filters on your phone of Pokemon Go, the technology makes other features appear to be right in front of you and in the world around. In this case, it’s a whole football game, with you pitch side.

This means that fans from around the world can watch the United games as if they were sat pitch side at Old Trafford themselves.

Recently footage has emerged of this in action, with the SoFi stadium broadcasting the United game against Fulham in to United’s LA-based fans which you can see below.

The footage shows the venue at the SoFi stadium with everyone appearing to be sat right behind Andre Onana’s goal for a corner, with screens in the rafters to show the televised angle of the match.

This impressive piece of technology is incredibly profitable, with the current augmented reality market being worth £17 billion, however with developments in reality technology such as the metaverse, augmented and virtual reality, the market is expected to rocket to £77 billion by 2030.

Several stadiums across America now use AR by allowing fans to view player stats, and game information through their phone cameras, appearing to be overlaying the information over the game.

It’s expected that this technology is going to be the future of fans matchday experience, and clubs like United are keen to get in on the action first, allowing to capitalise on their oversees fanbase.

It’s expected that with the new stadium, through the use of AR, naming rights, hospitality and other commercial ventures, the Red Devil are predicted to earn up to £230 million per season. This is a huge jump up from their current £136 million, which is already the highest in the Premier League, with Spurs in second place with £118 million thanks to the facilities of their new stadium.

Thankfully as well, the cost of the stadium is PSR-deductible, meaning the development won’t count against the club PSR expectations.

History of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.

In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.

In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.

In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.

More Historical Facts…

In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.

In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.

Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century

From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.

After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.

On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.

By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.

During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.

From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.

On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.

Ulyanovsk after the Second World War

In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.

In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.

With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.

On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.

Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.

This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).

The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.

Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.

It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.

Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.

The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.

Novy Venets Boulevard - a pedestrian street in the center of Ulyanovsk located on the highest point of the city. From here you can see the Volga, Imperial Bridge, and city districts. Museum of Local Lore named after Ivan Goncharov . This museum occupies a beautiful mansion with an elegant tower built as a monument to the great Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. Historical and Memorial Museum of Ivan Goncharov - a magnificent building, which is a historical and architectural sight of Ulyanovsk. A separate hall is dedicated to the history of the building itself, in the remaining halls there are thematic exhibitions related to the personality of the writer and his family. Museum “Simbirsk Classical Gymnasium” . Simbirsk was one of the first Russian cities to introduce secondary education for children. Historical and architectural complex “Simbirsk Fortified Line” . At the time of the foundation of Ulyanovsk, the Simbirsk line protected the Russian land from the raids of nomads from the east.
