There are bizarre rock formations, canyons, the Gurvan-Saikhan mountain range and sand dunes 185km long, as well as forests of small saksaul trees and other desert vegetation. Apart from a few villages and small towns that we pass through on the way, most of the population have a nomadic lifestyle, frequently moving with their round white felt yurts ("Gers") and herds of camels, goats and horses.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

THIS ITINERARY IS SUITABLE FOR EXPERIENCED RIDERS, PREFERABLY WITH SOME OFF-ROAD EXPERIENCE.

Arrive in   'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Evening meet the tour leader and rest of group for Technical Briefing. The meeting talks about day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.

Make an early start to get out of Ulaanbaatar city and onto the road leading south to the Gobi. The road is black-topped for a while, then soon becomes a rough jeep track as it crosses the green rolling hills of Tuv (“Central”) Province. Ride on to   'Baga Gazriin Chuluu' , a mountain of unusual granite rocks which are home to ibex, marmots, steppe fox and plenty of birds of prey. Overnight ger camp.

Ride through Mandalgov, the capital town of Dundgov Province and continue across the open steppe of Middle Gobi to   'Tsagaan Suvraga' , an amazing series of cliffs, white and pink limestone rock formations taking the appearance of stalagmites up to 30 meters high. It is an excellent site for some out-of-the-ordinary photography. Overnight ger camp.

The track to Dalanzadgad, capital of Umngov Province (“South Gobi”) has little traffic, even though we are travelling on the main road. This is Mongolia as one imagines it – distant horizons, dry rocky earth and a huge blue sky. The town appears like a mirage and it takes nearly two hours of riding to reach it after seeing it from a far. Overnight ger camp situated within view of the   'Gobi Gurvansaikhan' mountains. Overnight ger camp.

Ride up into the mountains of the Gurvansaikhan Uul (“Three Beautiful Mountains”). This national park is so unexpected in the middle of the desert and it is a delight to feel so cool in the deep canyon where sunlight reaches for only a few minutes each day. After walking into   'Yolyn Am' (the “Vulture’s Mouth”) we ride westwards at the foot of the mountains to   'Khongoryn Els' where huge sand dunes meet the end of the Altai mountain range. Overnight ger camp.

Leaving the golden dunes behind us we ride through a wonderful mountain pass and on to Bulgan village. Not far from here is Bayanzag, a forest of rare   'Saksul' trees and the   'Flaming Cliffs' where many dinosaur remains have been found and Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs during his expedition of the 1920s. Overnight ger camp.

Today we travel north-east to Mandal-Ovoo and then to Saikhan-Ovoo. Here, on a bend in the Ongi river, are the remains of   'Ongii Hiid' monastery on each bank of the river. Overnight ger camp.

Continue northwards through Middle Gobi to reach   'Zorgol Khairkhan' , a dramatic granite mountain with bizarre rock formations jutting out against the skyline. Continue on to Ovorburd Els where there are small sand dunes amongst the rolling hills. Overnight ger camp.

As we return to Ulaanbaatar, the landscape becomes gradually greener and more mountainous. Even close to the city people still live the   'Traditional Lifestyle' there are more horses and less camels than we encountered in the Gobi. We expect to arrive in Ulaanbaatar in the early afternoon.   Overnight in hotel .

SANDS OF GOBI

DSC09735.jpg

GENERAL INFO

The Gobi desert is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Mongolia. You will enjoy a combination of big sand hills, rocky mountains with old canyons, as well as wide forests consisting of small saxaul trees, riding all the way back to Ulaanbaatar through endless steppes. The Gobi is the fifth biggest desert in the world and is home to a wide range of animals such as antelopes and Bactrian camels, of which you will see lots! The highest part of the Gobi is 1,580 meters and the entire area has over 1.2 million km2, a true enduro paradise. The first dinosaur fossil eggs have been found at the red "Flaming Cliffs" of Bayanzag, where you will probably experience one of the most beautiful sunrises you have ever seen. Riding through the hidden ‘ WHITE STUPA ’ rock formations which are millions of years old, all in all an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

You will be picked up at the airport and taken to UB Grand Hotel (or alternative hotel of choice), right in the city center next to Chinggis Khaan Square. By the end of the day, all riders will have tried their gear, received a safety briefing and are ready to leave Ulaanbaatar early next morning. There will be a welcome dinner with all riders that night.

DAY 2 – BAGA GAZAR ROCKS (220km

The astonishing granitic formations of Baga Gazariin Chuluu, translated as ” stone of the little place ”, are located in the northwest of the province of Dundgovi, at a height of 1751 meters , they form a granite canyon erected in the heart of the steppe. The erosion polished the rock faces of the cliffs.

DAY 3 – WHITE STUPA (230km)

Exciting day ahead! Once a floor of the ocean, this scarp looks like a white stupa, hence the name Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa). This white limestone rock formation is 400 meters long and has been shaped strangely as a result of thousands of years of wind and water erosion. After a rain, the water pouring down the scarp makes it look like a huge waterfall.

DAY 4 – ONGI MONASTERY (220km)

The location of the monastery is spectacular among the Gobi Desert mountains, nestling on the south and north banks of the Ongi River bend, Ongi was one of the important monasteries in the Gobi desert. The monastery had 4 religious institutions and housed by over 1000 monks at its height. Beautiful hiking with a spectacular view from the sacred mountain top.

DAY 5 – SAND DUNE (265km)

Elsen Tasarkhai is a part of the Mongol Els sand dunes, that continues 80 km long 5 km wide. It is around 80 km east of Karakorum - the ancient Mongolian capital. The area is surrounded by sand dunes, hills covered with rare bushes and a small gobi forest. Together this presents a very unique combination of Mongolian mountains, forests, breathtaking sand dunes and even a river crossing by all-in-one location.

DAY 6 – LOOP Day ar0und 90km

We are staying over at the same camp that night or alternatively camp in the open wild. It depends a little on weather conditions. It will be a day to enjoy the sands, in fact we will have a drive all along the edge of the dunes and enjoy a proper bon fire evening that same night.

DAY 7 – HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK (250km)

We will head to our final destination, the HUSTAI NATIONAL PARK . It was declared as National Park in 1993. Initially established for the first reintroduction of the Przewalski’s Horse the park covers more than 50,000 hectares. We will set up our camp close to some stunning rock formations. We will visit a Nomadic family along the way and experience their way of living, which has barely changed in the last couple of hundred years.

DAY 8 – Ulaanbaatar 160KM

After having returned to Ulaanbaatar, you will have a short break and shower time at your hotel. There will be time to do some cashmere shopping if desired, later we will meet at Ulaanbaatar’s best hot pot restaurant for a farewell dinner. Whoever has the energy to continue is welcome to enjoy the city’s nightlife, we will show you the best places to go to.

DAY 9 – DEPARTURE

Departure day, we will take you to the airport. Have a great flight and we hope to see you again during one of our other trips.

During the trip, it takes approximately 2-6 hours driving (80-280km) from one to next destination depending on road and weather condition on each driving day. But it is not nonstop drive! We can take a short stop frequently everywhere along the road for photographs, toilets, stretch and meet with local nomads.

The trips are demanding, designed to test experienced riders, but prove an exhilarating journey for those with off-road skills.

Middle Gobi Motorcycle Trail

On this circular route of 4 days riding we travel more than 1000 km's and will visit the unusual granite mountain at "Baga Gazar" Chuluu, temple remains at "Ongi Khiid" and another beautiful mountain, "Zorgol Khairkhan" nearby the sand dunes at "Ovurburd Els". Most of the population in the countryside still live a nomadic or semi-nomadic existence, moving frequently with their herds of animals. In recent years many families have moved to the city, so we may ride for a considerable distance across the wild and beautiful land without encountering any people or vehicles.

The Gobi Desert Motorcycle Travel Guide

No trip to Mongolia is complete without seeing the Gobi Desert. It’s not as hard you might think getting there and is worth the ride. This article will show you how to travel there on a motorcycle, what the roads are like, which part to visit and what you need to know to experience the best of Mongolia’s Gobi Desert.

Guide to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia walking on sand dunes

The Gobi Desert is the largest desert in Asia and acts as a natural border between Mongolia and China. It has a total surface area of 0.5 million square miles and one of the world’s most volatile climates, changing from -50C to +40C through the year.

Guide to the Mongolian Gobi Desert

Choosing the best bit of the Gobi

The Gobi is split into five different ecosystems; you’ve got the Eastern Gobi, Alashan, Gobi Lakes, Dzungarian Basin and Tian Shan range. As you travel through the south of Mongolia you’ll likely be riding or driving through parts of the Gobi without even realising it. It’s not all sand and desert.

To get to the quintessential image of the Gobi – you want to visit the Khongoryn Eels area, located in the Gurvansaikhan National Park.

Adventure Motorcycle Travel in Mongolia Gobi Desert

Riding to the Gobi Desert

The Gurvansaikhan National Park is probably the most famous part of the Gobi region, it holds the Flaming Cliffs, Yolyn Am Ice gorge and Khongoryn Eels dunes. Those three are the reason you’ll want to make the trip south. Check the map out below to find the location of all three. You can find more about the Flaming Cliffs and Yolyn Am in our  Top 10 things to do in Mongolia Guide .

Adventure Motorcycle Travel Guide for Gobi in Mongolia

Assuming you are making your way south from Ulaanbaatar, you will want to head towards the city of Dalanzadgad. The road to Dalanzadgad from UB is well paved and quick riding (but boring). It’s a two day ride and a good halfway stop off-point would be Mandalgovi, where there are a couple of hotels.

Adventure Motorcycle Travel Guide map for Gobi desert

Once you’ve reached Dalanzadgad, turn west and head to the town of Bayandalai, where you can stock up on fuel, food and water (goes without saying that there aren’t any shops in the desert past this point). That road will be a little bit more rough. Once you leave that town and continue west towards Khongoryn the going will get a lot more tough. There are a few mucky swamp areas, big ruts, sand pits and very, very poor gravel roads. It is doable though, and can even be done with two people on one bike. It is hard going, but worth it once the dunes come into view.

Adventure Motorcycle Travel in Mongolia Gobi Desert

To get to the dunes you will need to cross a river by using a small bridge. The exact coordinates for the bridge are  43.776096, 102.255259 . Once you’re in Bayandalai, we’d recommend putting those exact coordinates into Maps.Me. Once you’ve done that, the app will show you the trails, which lead to the bridge – and the trails are surprisingly accurate. It’s easier to use the app in that area as a GPS map instead of as a sat-nav. As long as you’re following it in the right direction you’ll eventually make it.

Adventure Motorcycle Travel in Mongolia Gobi Desert

Once you cross the bridge, you will have a bit of sand riding to do. It’s not deep sand and doable, just take your time and plod through. You’ll eventually exit the sand area and come to a long green patch and the dunes will be in front of you.

You can ride your motorcycle onto the dunes. We saw plenty of Mongolians on little 125s blasting around right at the top.

off-road adventure biking in Mongolia

Accommodation

As you close in on the dunes you will see plenty of yurt camps and herds of camels. You can stay at these camps (there are loads for you to pick and choose from) and they will also offer camel rides and food.

If you’d rather camp, then once you cross the bridge at the coordinates we supplied, just head straight towards the dunes and you’ll see a little camping sign.

We wanted to camp right in front of the dunes and decided to pitch our tent on the grass in front of them. Your call.

motorcycle camping in Mongolia Gobi Desert

You can go to the Gobi any time of the year. But if you’re overlanding and travelling in your own vehicle, chances are that you won’t be travelling through Mongolia in winter. The best times of year to go are from June to August, we visited early September and saw no tourists, only locals.

Loving the Gobi Desert in Mongolia

Flaming Cliffs

You’ll probably hear a lot about the Flaming Cliffs while you’re in Mongolia. Unfortunately, there aren’t any fires or eternally burning flames there (like the natural fires in Turkey and Azerbaijan ) . Instead, an American palaeontologist named it when he visited in the 1920s. It’s famous for the world’s first discovery of dinosaur eggs. In fact, Mongolia in general and the Gobi specifically, have produced incredible dinosaur fossil remains.

Travel in Mongolia Red Cliffs

But anyway, it’ll be on your route if you’re heading to Khongoryn Eels and worth a stop. It’s a short ride from the Bayandalai village and easy off-road single tracks to get there. You can’t really miss it and can pinpoint the exact location using Maps.Me. It can get busy in summer with tourist busses stopping at the top. It’s prettiest at sunset and make sure you take a long walk into the valley, just watch out for dinosaurs. There’s no payment to enter the valley and you can ride or drive right to the top.

Adventure Motorcycle Travel in Mongolia Red Cliffs

Yoyln Am Ice Gorge

The Yoyln Am Ice Gorge (try ‘Yoylin’ if your navigation device isn’t picking it up) is on your way from Dalanzadgad to Bayandalai. It’s a deep gorge in the Gobi and famous for being filled with ice all year round. While this was once potentially true, it’s no longer the case. The ice tends to melt away by September, so plan accordingly.

Ice Valley in Mongolia guide

It’s still a nice walk and a very beautiful ride. You will need to pay to enter the national park, should be about £1. From the ticket office it’s a tricky off-road ride. The route can be a bit treacherous with deep slushy mud in places, dependent on the time of year. You’ll eventually reach a car park where you will need to leave your vehicle and walk.

Guide to the Ice Valley in Mongolia

Do not try camping in Yolyn Am . We tried camping near the car park and were awoken late at night and told to move. We said no because it was dark and dangerous to ride the mucky route at night. The park attendants got aggressive fast and a lot of them turned up, pulling and tugging at our tent. We had to pack up and ride in the dark to get out of there. You can camp in a field next to the main road instead. It was the only one time in Mongolia where we were told to move. We pretty much camped everywhere and anywhere in Mongolia, so don’t let that put you off. We believe officials just don’t like people camping in national parks that require payment to enter.

Day 2-July 13

Baga Gazrin Chuluu 245km (100 km paved/145 km gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

Our Mongolian riding experience starts by heading south for about 100 km on paved roads towards the Gobi Desert. This allows us to get used to the bikes before we hit the dirt track and continue west for 150 km to our ger camp for the night. Baga Gazrin Chuluu is a picturesque mountain in the Gobi Desert. At an elevation of 1751 metres, it is located in the granite belt and hosts ibex, Siberian argali, vultures, hawks and eagles.

Day 3-July 14

Tsagaan Suvraga – White Cliffs 255 km (170 km paved/85 km gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

After about 50 km, we refuel in Mandalgobi, the provincial capital of Dundgobi province. We continue south on paved roads for another 100 km and then east on dirt tracks for about 50 km before arriving at our ger camp near Tsagaan Suvraga, better known as the White Cliffs.

Tsagaan Suvraga is a unique formation of sheer cliffs, 30 meters high and 100 meters wide. From a distance, the north facing sheer slope resembles the ruins of an ancient city.

Day 4-July 15

Yol Valley 220 km (140 km paved/80 km gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

The day starts with a short ride to the White Cliffs, then riding around this interesting archaeological area. This leaves us with another 50 kms (approx.) of dirt track, giving us the opportunity to truly experience the extreme remoteness of the Gobi Desert.

A stretch of paved roads delivers us into Dalanzadgad (DZ), the provincial capital of Umungobi for a quick refuel and resupply. After DZ another 40 km (approx.) of enjoyable desert riding brings us to our ger camp for the night.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 5-July 16

Khongorin Els – Singing Sand Dunes 210 km (all gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

Today promises to be one of the riding highlights of the trip. The Gurvan Saikhan mountains are the first sizeable mountains we get to play in. As today’s route is entirely on dirt, we see the gradual change of landscape from steppe to mountain range, to eventually reach Khongorin Els, one of the largest formations of sand dunes in the Gobi Desert.

On our way to the dunes, we ride through the Yolin Am Canyon via the Vulture’s Nest, a pass in a deep, narrow gorge in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains where finding ice sheets in the bottom shadows is not unusual. Exiting the canyon delivers us to some of the best open-steppe riding on the tour—wide open landscapes and dozens of tracks to choose from. Stand up, look up, and open up!

Day 6-July 17

Khongorin Els – Singing Sand Dunes No Riding. Rest Day. Accommodation in ger camp.

Khongorin Els is also known as the “singing sands” because of the sound that the howling northwest winds cause when passing over the tips of the dunes. Today we have a free day to spend in this magnificent place – dune climbing, camel riding, or just relaxing to catch up with your diary entries.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 7-July 18

Bayanzag – Flaming Cliffs 130 km (all gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

Up for an early start from the dunes, we head towards the tiny village of Bulgan to refuel. We cross a few dry riverbeds while riding through the northern side of the mountains in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park.

Our ger camp for the night is located close to Mongolia’s famous Flaming Cliffs – a place renowned for one of the richest collections of dinosaur remains on the planet after Roy Andrew Chapman discovered dozens of paleontological artifacts here in the 1920s. The high red gravel cliffs and the surrounding emptiness make it well worth the visit.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 8-July 19

Saikhan Ovoo – Ongi Monastry 230km (all gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

A relatively flat ride through the expanse of the Gobi Desert takes us from Bayanzag to Saikhan-Ovoo. A famous camel-herding area, we are likely pass many Bactrian camels. Our overnight stop is near the Ongi Monastery, established in the mid 16th century and once one of Mongolia’s largest monasteries.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 9-July 20

Khujirt – Orkhon Eco Camp 270 km (all gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

Today is usually a fairly long day, so we will start early. After a short ride to refuel in Saikhan-Ovoo, we return to dirt tracks through the desert. After leaving Dundgobi province, the landscape gradually transitions to small river crossings, alpine trees, and eventually mountain passes, promising more great riding.

Our accommodation is an eco-camp in the beautiful Orkhon Valley overlooking the Orkhon River.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 10-July 21

Tshenkher Hot Springs 280 km (all gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

We start the day in search of a suitable spot to cross the Orkhon River. Once on the other side a delightful ride awaits through forests, up and down hilly mountain roads, and many little river crossings at the bottom of valleys.

Our ger camp for the next two nights is at the Tshenker Hot Springs, enabling us to enjoy this area.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 11-July 22

Tshenkher Hot Springs Rest Day. No Riding. Accommodation in ger camp.

Today is a rest day to do as you wish. Choose to start off with a soak in the hot springs, catch up with laundry, or hire a local guide and explore the area on horseback.

Day 12-July 23

Kharkhorin 120 km (90 km paved/30 km gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

Only a short day (distance wise) awaits. After a short but fun ride along the flat river valley and crossing several shallow streams, we resupply in the town of Altan Ovoo. From here we ride pavement to the city of Kharkhorin where the main attraction is the Erdene Zuu monastery—one of Mongolia’s largest monasteries before the Communists destroyed it.

Today, the monastery is active and holds around 100 monks. We also have time to visit the new Erdene Zuu Museum which displays many unique artifacts of the Khubilai Khan era.

Day 13-July 24

Hustai National Park 295 km (275 km paved/20 km gravel). Accommodation in ger camp.

Today is one of our longest days of riding on a paved road. For some it will be a source of great joy after long days on a dirt tracks. We start by riding towards Hustai National Park where Przewalski’s horses, the last surviving subspecies of wild horses, were introduced after near extinction in late 1950s.

gobi desert motorcycle tour

Day 14-July 25

Ulaanbaatar 85 km (15 km paved/70 km gravel).

Our last day on the bikes, unfortunately! A short ride takes us from Hustai to Ulaanbaatar with the option of returning via a paved road or dirt track. The track is beautiful and follows a valley right up to the city. We return the bikes in the afternoon and then clean up for our last group dinner in this magnificent country.

DAY 2:  Ulaanbaatar - Baga Gazriin Chuluu

Make an early start to get out of "Ulaanbaatar" city and onto the road leading south to the Gobi. The road is black-topped for a while, then soon becomes a rough jeep track as it crosses the green rolling hills of Tuv (“Central”) Province. Ride on to    'Baga Gazar' ,  a mountain of unusual granite rocks which are home to ibex,    'Marmots' , steppe fox and plenty of    'Birds'  of prey. Overnight 'Ger' camp.

DAY 3:  Baga Gazriin Chuluu - Saikhan Ovoo

Ride through "Mandalgov", the capital town of Dundgov Province and continue across the open rolling hills and steppe of    'Middle Gobi'   to the rocky cliffs beside the "Ongii" river where the    'Ger Camp'   is located. Overnight 'Ger' camp.

DAY 4:  Saikhan Ovoo - Uvur Burd Els

DAY 5:  Uvur Burd Els - Ulaanbaatar

As we return to Ulaanbaatar, the landscape becomes gradually greener and more mountainous.
