If your father is alive, chances are he likes Jack Reacher . Reacher is the stereotypical "man’s man". He’s intelligent, decisive, and vigilant–oh, and he’s a trained killer. Reacher plays the mysterious stranger, roaming around the nation and running into wrongs only he can right. The behemoth military veteran–written as a six-and-a-half-foot hunk of muscle–with a strong moral center was surprisingly written as a subversion of trends in the written crime thriller genre at the time. Jack Reacher started as a Lee Child novel that spun into a series that numbers closer to 30 than 20 volumes now. The written character mirrors the invincible action hero embodied classically by actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone , and yet when he made his feature debut, he was played by Tom Cruise . Cruise, for lack of a better word, freaking killed it as the no-nonsense tough guy in both films– Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher : Never go Back –but since then the franchise has remained silent.

Six years later and Reacher is resurrected for a television series, this time starring Alan Ritchson ( Titans ). Ritchson definitely fits the look as a late 30-something beefcake himself. Fans dissatisfied with Cruise’s casting last decade finally have their hulking blonde hero, as Ritchson has starred as multiple superheroes and even a ninja turtle. When speaking with Empire , Ritchson talked about leaning into his size for the role saying:

Barefoot, I’m six [foot] three and a half-ish. When I put the boots on, I’m six [foot] five. And we decided we’re gonna come in at 235lbs. I walk around at 205, so I wanted to put on some weight–and it shows on screen. I look like an ox!

In a conversation with the Toronto Sun , author Lee Child heaped praise upon Ritchson saying, “It was all about the very first impression…Immediately, he nailed it.” He continued, “If you loved Reacher [the book series], Alan [Ritchson] nails it, and he just gets better and better.”

Where is Reacher Streaming Online?

Anyone with an Amazon Prime account has access to Reacher , which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Amazon Prime continues to position itself as the home of Tom Clancy ’s adaptations with Jack Ryan already approved for a fourth season, Without Remorse reaching almost 5 million households in the first 30 days of release, and a fresh reboot of Reacher arriving imminently.

Amazon Prime Video released the official trailer for Reacher on December 2, 2021. The video starts off with a prison fight scene that's very reminiscent of the iconic elevator scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier . It's quite clear from the 2-minute clip that Reacher is going all-in on the character's almost-superhuman physical capabilities but playing it mostly for comedic effect. How Long is the First Season of Reacher?

Reacher debuts with an eight-episode story arc adapting Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel, The Killing Floor . In The Killing Floor , Jack Reacher is framed for murder, and he vengefully seeks out those who sought to imprison him. It’s essentially the introductory story of the Reacher mythos, showing how Jack becomes the man we know and love. Additionally, that makes this both the perfect jumping-on point for new fans and a return to the classics for old ones. Each episode runs about an hour-long according to early reviews, so expect more Reacher in more ways than one. The first eight episodes are as follows:

Critical Reception

Early reviews of Reacher (including our own ) have been more or less positive, and it's been described as a faithful-if-flawed adaptation of Lee Child’s knight errant. Ritchson is as intimidating as he is wryly comedic as Reacher, and the supporting cast, including Malcolm Goodwin ( American Gangster ), Willa Fitzgerald ( Little Women ), and Hugh Thompson ( Sea of Love ) bring depth and warmth to the series. The show currently averages 82% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reacher was developed for TV by Nick Santora, a writer, director, and producer known for his work on the shows Prison Break and Scorpion . As one of the writers behind 2008’s Punisher : War Zone , Santora is no stranger to darkly comedic tales of fury and justice. Santora is joined as an executive producer by Reacher creator Lee Child and the director of the first Jack Reacher film, Christopher McQuarrie , among many others.

How to watch the Jack Reacher TV show

Move over, Tom Cruise. A new Jack Reacher reaches out in the trailer for an Amazon Prime Video series based on Lee Child's best-selling action thriller novels.

In this TV version, Alan Ritchson plays the ass-kicking literary hero. Appearing in 26 books, Reacher is a decorated former military policeman who roams the US looking for trouble. The debut season is based on the first book in the series, Killing Floor, in which Reacher tackles a conspiracy in a small town. 

All eight episodes are set to premiere on Prime Video on Feb. 4, 2022.

Tom Cruise played Reacher in two movies, in 2012 and 2016, but he drew criticism from fans of the books for being a fraction of the size of the 6-foot-5-inch, 250-pound character described by Child. Ritchson, who previously starred as superheroes Aquaman in Smallville and Hawk in Titans, is clearly much closer to the man-mountain of the books, popping zip ties, taking on all comers in a prison brawl, and giving XXL T-shirts a run for their money.

Reacher raised the stakes in the most recent season, with bigger and tougher fights than ever, but throughout both seasons 1 and 2, there are plenty of scenes that highlight the best of the show. While Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is usually the character that gets the most iconic moments, his team always comes together to help him defeat the bad guys by any means necessary. Though many of the greatest hits from the series come from the epic battles, there are also quiet scenes that develop Reacher as a character.

Premiering on Prime Video in 2022, Reacher has taken the television landscape by storm with its faithful adaptation of the book series. 8 Bathroom Fight Scene

Season 1, episode 1, "welcome to margrave".

The pilot of Reacher was an important episode of the show. It needed to introduce Reacher as a character and establish that he's a force of nature who's not to be trifled with. Placing Reacher in prison early in the episode also shows the audience that though he's one of the good guys, he's not afraid to step outside the law when he knows that justice isn't being served. Unfortunately for the other inmates, they picked the wrong man to start a fight with.

In the bathroom scene, a group of men corners Reacher to intimidate him, but of course, this backfires immediately. In true Reacher fashion, he handles the men easily, towering over them and breaking more than a few bones along the way. They enter and Reacher takes them down with practically one hit each. It's not only an example of what he's capable of, but a teaser for the inventive fight choreography that the show is known for.

7 Stairwell Chase

Season 1, episode 6, "papier".

No matter how many times Reacher proves that he shouldn't be challenged, no one ever learns. Though it never gets old watching him crack skulls the old-fashioned way, season 1, episode 6, "Papier" utilizes the set piece of a fire escape to include dimension to the stakes of the fight. This particular fight also sheds light on Reacher's intelligence as well as his physical strength. He uses tools from his environment, like a bike wheel, and his tie to aid him in the fight, making the setting feel purposeful and giving him a challenge despite having only one opponent.

6 Conversation With Roscoe

Season 1, episode 8, "pie".

Throughout season 1, the relationship between Reacher and Roscoe (Willa Fitzgerald) is a compelling undercurrent as they work together to finish the investigation. Roscoe is one of the few people that Reacher can open up to and occasionally listen to. Their bond of mutual trust and affection comes to a head in the finale of season 1 when Reacher reaches his limit and can no longer stay in Margrave. The pair have an honest heart-to-heart that makes their separation all the more heartbreaking. Though Roscoe wasn't in season 2, based on their goodbye, there might be hope for the couple.

Dixon replaces Roscoe as Reacher's romantic interest in season 2, but one line from the finale proves she's also the better match for him.

5 Reacher Goes To Church

Season 2, episode 1, "atm".

Season 2 of Reacher comes back with a vengeance as he comes face to face with the consequences of his lonely existence. When contacted by another former member of his military police unit, it quickly becomes clear that this season is going to be about getting revenge on whoever's been targeting his friends. In the course of the investigation, Reacher finds himself somewhere he doesn't frequent, a church, and comes face to face with a priest he has a couple of questions for.

Hearing Reacher say "I need to go to church" is just about the last thing audiences would expect to come out of his mouth, but his hunch pays off, and the priest gives him a clue as to where the investigation is leading. Though no fights break out, and it's a small moment in the overall episode, Reacher uses his cunning to get the information he needs. Additionally, seeing a man so linked to violence in such a peaceful place is a stunning juxtaposition in the show.

4 Cement Fight

Season 2, episode 2, "what happened in atlantic city".

There may not be any Roscoe in season 2, but that doesn't mean Reacher doesn't have a love interest. Karla Dixon (Serinda Swan) is another member of the 110th MP, and though her past with Reacher wasn't romantic, the chemistry between them becomes too obvious to ignore. In season 2, episode 2, "What Happened In Atlantic City", the group's hunch leads them to an abandoned construction site with plenty of wet cement. They prove to be an amazing team when it comes to fighting together, even if Reacher and Dixon don't stay together after season 2 .

3 Biker Gang Fight

Season 2, episode 4, "night at the symphony".

The biker gang that ambushes Reacher and the rest of the team might have been intimidating to another group of less skilled fighters, but they didn't leave a scratch on the 110th. Reacher does the most damage with gruesome moments of bone breaking and skull cracking, but it's all in the name of protecting his friends and putting an end to the corruption at work. However, as with much of season 2, he couldn't have made it out without his team, and every character shines in a moment of beautiful action.

2 Homemade Silencer

Season 2, episode 6, "new york's finest".

Deception and stealth are two key features of being military police, and while Reacher might be too tall to always be the most stealthy, he makes up for it with strength and his powers of persuasion. When the need arises to interrogate someone without making a sound, any screaming or gun shots are off the table. Instead, Reacher makes a silencer for his gun out of a water bottle and convinces the man to tell him everything. Of course, there's no such thing as a water bottle silencer, but Reacher's convincing, and formidable, enough to make him believe anything.

1 Rocket Launcher

Season 2, episode 8, "fly boy".

Reacher season 2's Little Wing weapon was teased in episode 4 and is finally used in the finale of the season. There are many unbelievable moments in the season 2 finale, but when Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) uses a rocket launcher to take down a helicopter, it's not something that will ever be forgotten. In true Reacher fashion, the moment is casual, a typical day at the office for everyone involved. Of course, the explosion is on an epic scale and their actions play a crucial role in saving the day, but that's par for the course for Jack Reacher.

Beyond that, it's interesting that "Never Go Back" is trending above the first film in the franchise since the sequel was not as well received critically or commercially as its predecessor, with "Never Go Back"  director Ed Zwick personally taking a percentage of the blame for its perceived shortcomings . It's entirely possible that audiences who missed the sequel are now taking the opportunity to get caught up with something that passed them by several years ago. In any event, it's further proof that Cruise remains one of the most bankable stars we have.

There are very few actual butts-in-seats movie stars left in the world. Cruise, however, has proved time and time again that he can motivate the masses to turn up for one of his films. Not only as Ethan Hunt in the "Mission" films, but let's not forget that "Top Gun: Maverick" now ranks as one of the biggest box office hits in history . That's a credit to Cruise, who believes very strongly in releasing these movies on the big screen before they ever make it to streaming.

We see all the time that movies released in theaters tend to perform better on streaming after the fact, even if they weren't hits at the box office. Case in point, "Never Go Back" made $162 million worldwide against a $60 million budget, far less than its predecessor. Yet, here we are, with the film standing tall above nearly everything else on Netflix right now. It's the same thing that allows movies like the sci-fi flop "Reminiscence" to thrive on streaming even though they didn't perform well in theaters. The big screen release helps give the movie an edge when it comes to enduring in the public consciousness.

It also certainly doesn't hurt that the "Reacher" TV show has provided a big boost to the franchise in recent years. Audiences are currently waiting for "Reacher" season 3 on Prime Video , and that's opened the door for Cruise to get a little bit of a second life as the character — at least in terms of Netflix views.

Tom Cruise is one of the most well-cast actors in Hollywood history. It’s hard to imagine the Mission: Impossible franchise continuing once he’s decided he’s hung from his last airplane; he’s incredible as a misogynist motivational speaker in Magnolia ; and his villainous turn in Collateral deserved an Oscar. But one of the few exceptions to Cruise picking the right role is Jack Reacher . He was the wrong person — and the wrong height — to play the character in 2012’s Jack Reacher and in 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

Even Lee Child, the author of the Jack Reacher book series, has said as much.

“Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality,” he shared in 2018 (Cruise is 5′ 7″; Reacher is 6′ 5″). “I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy… But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is. The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality.”

That being said! The Reacher movies are pretty fun. If you’ve only seen Prime Video’s kick-ass Reacher series, starring height-appropriate Alan Ritchson, they’re worth a watch, especially since they’re now both streaming on Netflix.
