Simala Shrine Guide 2024: Your Guide to Cebu’s Miraculous Church

Cebu Insider Team

  • October 29, 2023
  • January 14, 2024

Tourists flying to Cebu province mostly look for these experiences— encountering whale sharks in Oslob , swimming with the sardines in Moalboal , and canyoneering to Kawasan Falls in Badian . But Cebu is also home to several other attractions that may not be as popular, but definitely deserve your visit. One of them is the glorious Simala Shrine.

Located in Barangay Lindogon in Sibonga town, Simala Shrine is known for its castle-like architecture, as well as the alleged miraculous events associated with it and taking place inside the church.

For one, the church was credited for the healing of many dengue fever patients during its outbreak in the province in the late 1990s. Also, the Virgin Mary inside the church is known to cry tears of blood every September 8th, her birthday. This made it earn the moniker, the Miraculous Mama Mary Church. It is also known as The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist.

Also, here’s another fun fact. Simala Shrine is built and owned by the Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration, whose members serve as the guardians of this church.

Simala Shrine will remind you of other beautiful places of worship like the mosques in Kuala Lumpur, or perhaps even the cathedrals in Europe. Its intricate architecture and interior design are testaments to the influence of Catholicism on Cebu province, not to mention this church being important for devout believers because of the many miracles associated with it. It is recommended that you include Simala Church on your itinerary.

Heading to Simala Shrine in Sibonga, Cebu? Our Simala Shrine Tourist Guide 2023 breaks down everything you need to know about visiting this beautiful church, including the fees and how to get there.

➡️From Moalboal

To reach Simala Shrine from Moalboal, you must take the city-bound bus, specifically the Cebu via Barili bus. Tell the driver or conductor to drop you off at the Carcar intersection.

Then, ride another bus with a route to Argao or Oslob. If you are taking Ceres Liner, you shall get off the bus terminal in Sibonga. If you are taking other buses, tell the driver or bus conductor to drop you off at the 7-Eleven at the intersection going to Simala Shrine. From there, take a motorcycle to Simala Shrine. This trip would take 2 hours and cost you 150 PHP (~3 USD).

➡️From Oslob

On the highway, flag down a bus going to Cebu City. Tell the driver or conductor you are heading to Simala Shrine so they can drop you on the access road going there. From the intersection, take a habal-habal or tricycle to Simala Shrine. This trip would take 1 hour and cost 100 PHP (~2 USD).

Simala Shrine Fees

Since it is a church, you don’t have to pay anything to enter Simala Shrine. Everyone is welcome to visit this place. However, donations are also welcome, which will be used for its maintenance.

Simala Shrine Opening Hours

Simala Shrine is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. It also has scheduled masses daily.

Day Trip to Simala Shrine

Passing through security checks at the first gate, you will instantly be greeted with some bits and pieces of Simala Shrine’s grandness. After a minute of walking, Simala Shrine’s castle-like architecture will blow your mind.

Simala Shrine Guide

As you walk inside the church premises, you will be greeted by an overwhelmingly magnificent view of its interior. It is a vast structure filled with columns and terraces around the building. You may also want to take a look at the letters posted on a board at one part of the church. These letters are from people who say their illnesses were healed by the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As you approach the altar, you will see how it has images of various saints surrounding the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary which is placed in the altar’s topmost middle area. Gaze up the ceilings and you will see paintings that will remind you of those at the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

Simala Shrine Guide

Further exploring Simala Shrine, you will also chance upon an area where you can write letters to the Blessed Virgin Mary if you like. Just beside it is a prayer room that preserves a replica of the Virgin Mary. Now this image is important for the devotees, as it is the one believed to be miraculous, shedding tears.

Also, you may also want to visit the museum that showcases the many forms of the Virgin Mary, as well as her clothes, including those she wears each time she cries.

As you walk around, you will also see a dedicated area where visitors can light candles, and utter their prayers and wishes. The candles sold here are color-coded depending on what type of prayer you want answered. For instance, white candles are for purity and guidance, and gold candles are for healing, plus many other colors.

Simala Shrine Guide

Travelers can also shop in the souvenir store inside the church. The items sold in the shop are images of the Virgin Mary, saints and angels, crucifixes, bibles, rosaries, and prayer guides. There is also a dedicated part where visitors can light candles and say their prayers/wishes. The candles sold here vary in colors that correspond to a specific need.

Friendly Reminders

  • Wearing shorts, crop tops, tight-fitting clothes, caps, and sleeveless and revealing outfits is strictly prohibited. To give you an idea on what to wear, you can wear what you usually have when attending worship services, or your Sunday dress.
  • While sandals and slippers are allowed, it is best to wear a comfortable pair of shoes that will allow you to walk around the area easily. However, take note that you will have to remove your footwear when you enter the church’s adoration area.
  • While in the vicinity, observe silence as people visiting this church come here to pray. Be mindful of your actions. Avoid disturbing others.
  • Photography is allowed, provided that this won’t disturb anyone.
  • Simala Shrine souvenirs are available in a store inside that also sells sacramentals and other religious items.
  • Eating is not allowed in the vicinity. Be sure you have eaten before your visit if you don’t want to feel hungry during your tour. Otherwise, you may eat after your visit to this church.

Best Time to Visit Simala Shrine

Since Simala Shrine is an indoor tourist spot, every day of the year is perfect for visiting this church. But, if you wish to avoid the crowds coming to visit the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray, you may opt to schedule your visit on a weekday and as early as possible.

Simala Shrine Outside View

Simala Shrine Photo (outside)

Nestled amidst the lush hills of Sibonga, Cebu , the Simala Shrine stands as a beacon of faith and devotion. This sacred site draws pilgrims and tourists alike, seeking solace, blessings, and a glimpse of the divine.

Simala Shrine History and Significance

A marian devotion hub.

Simala Shrine History, officially known as the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its roots trace back to the early 1990s when a group of devotees claimed to witness miraculous events at the site. Word spread, and soon pilgrims flocked to this remote hilltop, seeking healing, protection, and spiritual renewal.

Miracles and Mysteries

The shrine gained fame for its reported miracles, including weeping statues, answered prayers, and inexplicable healings. The faithful believe that the Virgin Mary actively intercedes for those who visit, granting blessings and graces. The shrine’s reputation as a place of divine intervention continues to grow, drawing thousands each year.

Architecture and Design

A blend of styles.

The Simala Shrine’s architecture is a fusion of Gothic, Byzantine, and Romanesque influences. Its grand facade features intricate carvings, stained glass windows, and soaring spires. The central altar houses a life-sized statue of the Virgin Mary, adorned with jewels and gold.

Ornate Details

Inside, visitors are greeted by a profusion of religious art—paintings, sculptures, and mosaics—all celebrating the Virgin Mary. The shrine’s halls and chapels exude an otherworldly aura, inviting contemplation and prayer.

Pilgrimage Experience

The journey.

Pilgrims ascend the winding path to the shrine, passing through lush gardens and Stations of the Cross. The journey itself becomes a spiritual exercise—a time for reflection, penance, and hope.

Prayer and Petitions

At the shrine, visitors light candles, offer prayers, and write petitions. The scent of incense mingles with the rustle of leaves, creating an atmosphere of reverence. Many come seeking healing, guidance, or simply a moment of connection with the divine.

The Labyrinth , a 25-meter-diameter pathway with a complex design that is difficult to navigate, is located next to the church. The labyrinth is used for meditation. relaxation and rosary recitation. Pray and contemplate before heading back to your accommodation.

Simala Parish Church

History and Background

Foundation of the monastery.

The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist was established in 1998. A group of Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration (MMEA) founded it. The monks aimed to create a sacred space for prayer and to house the Marian Shrine, a revered image of the Virgin Mary. The monastery was quickly embraced by the local community, which actively supported its construction and maintenance.

The Apparition of the Virgin Mary

One of the most compelling aspects of Simala Shrine’s history is the reported apparition of the Virgin Mary. The monks and devotees believe that the Virgin Mary made her presence known during the construction phase. This event bolstered the faith of the Marian Monks and local Catholics, setting the stage for future miraculous occurrences.

Development of the Shrine

Over the years, the Simala Shrine has seen significant development. Initially a modest structure, the church has transformed into a grand, castle-like building. The architecture aims to inspire awe and devotion among visitors. The site now includes extensive facilities for prayers and gatherings, making it a focal point for pilgrims in Cebu.

Tears of Blood Phenomenon

The “Tears of Blood” phenomenon is perhaps the most famous event associated with Simala Shrine. Some statues of the Virgin Mary reportedly wept what appeared to be blood. This attracted thousands of faithful believers and curiosity seekers. Many consider this occurrence a divine sign, reinforcing the shrine’s status as a place of miracles and deep spiritual significance in Sibonga.

The combination of these events and developments has made the Simala Shrine a revered destination for those seeking spiritual solace and divine intervention.

This majestic structure is reminiscent of European cathedrals, creating a powerful visual impact.

Visitors often marvel at its expansive façade, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The stonework and large stained glass windows add to its grandeur. This style not only sets the church apart from other religious buildings but also serves as a fortress of faith for its visitors.

Simala Church Altar

Interior Design Elements

Inside, the Simala Shrine is equally impressive. The ceilings are high, echoing the grand design of historic cathedrals. Elegant chandeliers hang from above, casting a warm light that enhances the solemn atmosphere. The floors are tiled with intricate patterns, guiding the way to the altar.

The altar itself is a masterpiece, decorated with gold accents and religious statues. Wooden pews provide seating for worshippers, aligned perfectly to face the altar. Paintings depicting scenes from the Bible and the life of the Virgin Mary adorn the walls, offering both inspiration and reflection.

Simala Shrine: The Magnificent Castle-Like Church in Cebu

Simala Shrine

The Simala Shrine is an iconic church in Cebu that welcomes thousands of visitors every day.

Cebuanos regard the Simala Shrine as one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines. Located atop an uphill area in the southern town of Sibonga, this Catholic church is famous for its castle-like design and the alleged miraculous incident that took place inside.

Locals and tourists have gone in and out of the church to witness its magnificent structure. Every day, devotees visit the site to offer their prayers to the Virgin Mary, while non-devotees take their time admiring the impressive architecture.

This castle-like structure is considered one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines.

HISTORY OF SIMALA SHRINE

Altar at the Simala Shrine

Though it is commonly known as the Simala Shrine or church, its original name is the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist. It was built in 1998 by the Marian Monks of Eucharist Adoration (MMEA) so they could house an image of the Virgin Mary known as the Marian Shrine .

Simala is a miracle church attributed to Mama Mary.

The shrine is associated with a number of miraculous events, including the healing of several dengue fever patients during its outbreak in the late 90s.

The most important among them, however, has to be when the image of the Virgin Mary inside the church was said to have cried tears of blood during her birthday, which is on September 8. This miraculous incident gave it the moniker of the Miraculous Mama Mary Church .

The miraculous feats continued until the 2000s and 2010s, with many accounts of people reportedly healing from diseases and disabilities after praying to the Virgin Mary at Simala.

The church dedicated an area to store items like crutches and wheelchairs used by devotees who were healed after praying at the Simala Shrine. They also have letters, stories, and photos recalling these moments.

WHAT IS INSIDE THE CHURCH?

One of the main features of the Simala Shrine is its enormity, a rare sight when compared to other historical churches in the country. Its uphill location was intended for visitors to take a penitentiary walk before entering the church.

We Love Mama Mary sign at Simala Shrine

As you climb up the steps, you will see the enormous structure and the bright green gardens below it. You will also find bushes that were cut and aligned to spell out WE LOVE MAMA MARY .

The intricate architecture complements the beautiful scenery outside, leaving people in awe once they step foot on the premises. It goes without saying that the enormous structure and impressive design are enough to captivate visitors and tourists alike.

The interior is reminiscent of older churches, like the ones in southern Cebu . Stone walls and ceilings, with paintings similar to the Sistine Chapel, create a mesmerizing atmosphere.

The Crown of Our Blessed Mother at Simala

The Crown of Our Blessed Mother is the newest addition to the church’s architecture, built during the pandemic in 2020. It stands 25 feet in height and 14 feet in width, and it was handcrafted by one of the pioneering monks of the church.

The sign along the bridge going to the church says that it was made as an offering for Mama Mary.

Simala Shrine has a candle lighting area that uses color-coded candles based on specific prayer intentions.

There is also a candle lighting area where you can use color-coded candles based on your prayer intentions. Here is the list of colors and their specific prayer requests:

  • White – Purity, guidance, or the right path
  • Black – Praying for loved ones who passed away
  • Green – Prosperity or success (financial or business, passing exams)
  • Gold – Healing or good health
  • Orange – Reconciliation with partner/enemy/family
  • Pink – Blessing or forgiveness
  • Yellow – Peace, strength, courage, or hope
  • Gray – Deliverance from evil ways/things/spirits
  • Brown – Vocation
  • Blue – Perseverance
  • Violet – Achievement

You can also buy some souvenirs at nearby shops that sell religious items, like rosaries, crucifixes, and prayer books.

PROHIBITIONS

There are a few things that you have to remember before visiting the Simala Shrine.

They are very strict about what you wear when you enter the church. Security personnel will check your attire before you enter. Here is a list of the pieces of clothing that you are not allowed to wear inside:

  • Short skirts
  • Shorts above the knee
  • Sleeveless or backless clothes
  • Sleeveless tank tops
  • Cropped tops showing your stomach
  • See-through/transparent clothes
  • Tight-fitting clothes
  • Baseball caps

You are also not allowed to use flash photography while you are inside the church.

No matter how beautiful the structure may be, visitors will be reminded that it is mainly a place of worship, so you are expected to be on your best behavior so as to not disturb those who are there to pay their respects.

The Simala Shrine has cemented itself in history as one of the most magnificent churches in Cebu and in the Philippines. Not only is it a major attraction, but it’s also a symbol of hope for many Filipinos who are devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and believe in the splendid miracles that help strengthen their faith.

You can visit this miracle church as a devotee or worshiper, or as a tourist who simply wants to witness the breathtaking monument. So if you’re curious, don’t hesitate to give this place a visit the next time you travel south.
