What is a Cruise Ship?

A cruise ship is a luxury vessel that is used to take passengers on a pleasure voyage in a journey that is as much a part of the experience as the various destinations on the way.

In contrast to an ocean liner that transports passengers from one point on the globe to the other often across the oceans, a cruise ship or a cruise liner as it is known by most, takes the people on board to a round trip that is of varied duration, from a single day to possibly a week and culminates at the originating port.

This is a very refreshing mode of enjoyment and recreation, which relaxes the mind and replenishes energies to a great extent.

History of Cruise Ships

The present-day form of cruising can be traced back to the beginning of the twentieth century when transoceanic travelling was at its zenith.

The only mode of transport was the ships so the different companies that were in this business offered the best services to compete in the market.

These ocean liners with luxurious services offered what came to be known as line voyages. But because of the long journey, which at best would be no less than four days, there had to be huge storage for fuel and other necessities and that didn’t leave much room for luxuries.

With the advent of jet aeroplanes in the latter half of the last century, there was a shift in passenger preference and the long sea voyages were left for only the ardent sea fans.

The Advent of Cruise Ships

This situation was ideal for the launch of a cruise ship. It needed something strikingly different and exciting to bring back the interest of the people to sea voyages and this is where these trips gained popularity.

Considering the fact that the journey is relatively short with many stoppages at exotic locations, the ships are designed accordingly, thereby making more room and utilizing that space for an open design that exudes extravagance. It would be appropriate to liken a cruise ship to a floating hotel complete with a hospitality unit amongst other crew members.

Facilities on Cruise Ships

The facilities onboard these cruise liners include great dining services. Some liners offer open-air dining on the deck, whereas, there are others that have expensively designed dining halls with mouth-watering recipes to leave a long-lasting impression on the passengers.

In addition to this, there are casinos, fitness centres, spas, cinemas, and some ships even have a Broadway-like theatre. These cruise ships also boast swimming pools, hot tubs, lounges, libraries, gyms and clubs.

To put it in a nutshell, they pamper the passengers with the best of hospitality and services that can be imagined with some of the choicest natural views along the sea.

Over the last decade, cruising has become an integral part of the tourism industry contributing over $25 billion yearly to this booming sector. The major bulk of the business as expected comes from the North American and European regions but the other areas like the pan pacific are also catching up.

Top 10 FAQs From New Cruisers

Questions about cruises commonly asked by first-time cruisers.

Here we have assembled a list of answers to the top 10 cruise FAQs by customers who are new to cruising. If you have additional questions please give us a call by using the number at the top of the screen. You can also  visit our FAQ section  for more expansive cruise FAQs and answers.

1. What’s included that makes cruising a great value?

Your cruise fare includes accommodations, meals throughout the day including our 4-course dining rooms, entertainment, and an endless array of activities, including newly launched Discovery at Sea programs like Stargazing, kids crafts and more! Plus, you won’t have to pay for costly airfare, trains, or cabs to get you from one city to the next. When you take everything into consideration, you'll discover that you can actually save money by going on a cruise, as opposed to a land-based vacation.

Additional fees may apply for services such as specialty restaurants, shore excursions, laundry, etc.

2. Will I get seasick?

Our larger ships are more stable with heavier weight and therefore are less prone to rolling motion. Most ships are so large and well-stabilized that it doesn’t even feel like you’re moving, especially in calmer waters such as Alaska’s Inside Passage and the Caribbean. The middle of the ship tends have less motion, as it is the natural balance point.

If you are prone to sea sickness, consider itineraries with fewer sea days. Port intensive cruises will give you the opportunity to spend more time on land. Consult your physician for a drug or alternative solution. Guests find over-the-counter medicine, patches and special wristbands often remedy the situation.

3. What is a crew appreciation?

The crew appreciation is a daily (adjustable) amount added to your onboard account and pooled in order to recognize the many crew members in the Bar, Dining, Entertainment, Housekeeping, Guest Services, Galley and Onboard Revenue areas and entertainment areas throughout our fleet who contribute to the guest experience. The daily amount of the Crew Appreciation is based on stateroom category: $16 USD per guest in Interior, Oceanview and Balcony, $17 USD per guest in Mini-Suite and Reserve Collection, and $18 USD per guest in Suites.

4. What should I wear?

Casual sportswear, including shorts, lightweight pants and jogging suits, is the order of the day both at sea and ashore in hotter climates. We recommend you bring a sweater, a jacket or an all-weather coat for cool evenings, and for shore excursions, depending on your destination. You'll also want comfortable shoes for strolling on deck.

For evening dining, keep with what you would wear to a nice restaurant at home: skirts/dresses, slacks, and sweaters for ladies, pants and open-neck shirts for men. Cruises five days or longer include at least one formal dining night: evening gowns and cocktail dresses for ladies and tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits for men.

5. Are all princess ships alike?

Princess has a variety of ships, some that can carry over 3,500 guests. Every vessel in our fleet is designed to give you plenty of room to yourself with spacious decks, public spaces and balcony staterooms. Yet each also creates many opportunities to socialize through activities and entertainment to suit your mood.

6. Is there phone and internet access?

Mobile phone service is available for use when the ship is at sea, in international waters, and in other areas where such use is permitted. All charges will be conveniently billed to you directly by your mobile device provider.

Your mobile phone provider must have a roaming agreement with Maritime Communications Partner (MCP)or Wireless Maritime Services (WMS). Please contact your provider for more details on rates and availability.

Not only do we have the internet, we offer the best Wi-Fi at sea! With MedallionNet® and MedallionNet® Max Wi-Fi, you can stream your favorite movies and shows, video chat with family and friends back home and post photos of your vacation with ease. You can purchase a package before or during your cruise.

7. Will I be bored?

Nope! You couldn’t do all the activities or attend all the events on board if you tried. (And we don’t recommend it.) The possibilities are just this side of endless – culinary demonstrations, bingo, wine tastings, spa treatments, Encounters with Discovery at SEA™ featuring local experts, destination-specific onboard programs like North to Alaska, miniature golf, a book club, dance classes and that’s just for starters.

8. Is cruising safe?

1.7 million passengers sail with Princess annually. Your safety is our top priority. All of our onboard medical facilities meet or exceed the standards established by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Our onboard medical facilities are staffed by full-time registered doctors and nurses. In addition to twice-daily office hours, they are available 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency.

All ships must follow rules and regulations to protect passengers' (and crewmembers') safety while onboard. The Coast Guard conducts quarterly inspections of all ships that operate from U.S. ports, making sure they comply with emergency-response requirements. Ships operate under international rules that regulate everything from fire safety to navigation and maritime security. We were the first in our industry to have a virtual training facility for our bridge crew, which we call the SeaSmart program. We also have voluntarily installed fire sprinklers in all cabins and balconies on all our ships.

9. What are the rooms like and how do I choose?

The staterooms are comfortable as can be, whether you’re sailing in an interior or a suite. But of course the higher the category, the nicer the experience. It all comes down to what you’re looking for. If you are keeping an eye on your budget – totally fine! – try an interior or oceanview. If you want the freedom to go outside from your stateroom, go with a balcony. (No matter where we sail, there’s always a great view.) And if you want more space – and a larger bathroom with tub – we recommend a mini suite. Looking to indulge in the best? Try a full suite. It includes all sorts of extras, like laundry and professional cleaning services. And if you’re traveling with a group, we have connecting staterooms and family suites, which sleep up to eight guests.

10. What is a shore excursion and how do I make reservations?

Exploring ports of call will be one of the highlights of your cruise, and one of the best ways to do this is on a shore excursion. You will find a variety of options available to suit your taste including family friendly options with discounted rates for children.

Excursions offered through Princess are carefully selected and provided by reputable tour operators who meet the high standards of Princess. Your security and comfort are of paramount importance. Every effort is made to ensure that each tour operates safely.

Princess organizes your tours in advance so your time in port is maximized and worry-free. We closely monitor tour departures and returns and we are able to hold the ship in the event your tour is delayed.

You can  book your shore excursions with Manage Booking  from approximately 12 weeks before travel, and up to 5 days before you depart.  Learn more about our ports and excursions, or watch one of our  cruise destination videos.

Forward vs. Aft of a Ship: What’s the Difference?

Last updated: March 6th, 2023

Celebrity Edge sailing at sunset

  • Find a Cruise

When getting acquainted with your cruise ship layout, there’s some location-related lingo that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with first. For instance, the front of a cruise ship is known as the forward, while the rear of a ship is called the aft.

You’ll find stateroom options to choose from on both sides of the ship (as well as in between), with each section offering its own distinct benefits. Here’s everything you need to know about the forward and aft of a ship to help you choose the best stateroom for your needs.

What’s the difference between the forward and aft of a ship?

Celebrity Silhouette ship exterior

Celebrity Silhouette

The maritime industry has its own language when it comes to naming parts of a ship. The forward of a ship is just as it sounds: It’s the most forward side, at the front of a cruise ship, facing the bow. The rear of a ship, at the direction of a ship’s stern, is called the aft.

And what’s wedged in between the forward and the aft of a ship is commonly dubbed midship.

What are the benefits of booking a stateroom at the forward of a ship?

Couple on a cruise veranda

Staterooms set at the front of a cruise ship are not without their appeal. For many cruisers, they wouldn’t trade in the views of a forward-facing stateroom for anywhere else on a ship. Indeed, it’s nice to have a similar view to what the captain does in the bridge as your ship pulls into port or points its bow out toward the sea.

Plus, it’s not uncommon for forward staterooms to come with a little extra space to spread out, too, thanks to the alternative stateroom configurations owed to the angled shape of a ship’s bow.

Posh interior of Sky Suite

Forward-facing staterooms are subject to more movement than other parts of a ship. This is because as a ship forges forward through the seas, it faces the most wind and direct hits from rolling waves, translating to lots of motion and sea spray. However, some cruisers enjoy that sense of being so connected to the sway of the seas.

Oceanview Stateroom on Celebrity Edge

Oceanview Stateroom

Due to the elements, a veranda isn’t especially practical at the forward (if you’ve ever had your Leonardo DiCaprio/Kate Winslet moment at the front of a cruise ship, you know that the wind and sea spray there is strong). However, the few verandas that are situated at the forward tend to be oversized.

While verandas are a relative rarity, the forward’s oceanview staterooms take on some unique characteristics. Due to the more unusual configurations, staterooms at the front of a cruise ship sometimes swap out the standard picture window for more massive or even floor-to-ceiling window panels—which afford pretty incredible views.

What are the benefits of booking a stateroom at the aft of a ship?

Aft of a ship - Celebrity Cruises wake

Staring out at a ship’s wake can be downright hypnotic, and for many cruisers, taking in the spectacle of the churning seas below, with the expansiveness of the ocean stretching out toward the horizon, is the ultimate in relaxation.

That alone might be reason to book a stateroom at the back of a ship, but if that isn’t enough to sell you on it, consider this: Cruisers with staterooms at the aft also get some of the best views around when pulling out of port.

Celebrity Cruises L-shaped balcony

Suite veranda

Another major perk is that coveted rear-facing verandas typically run bigger than the ones found midship. Some special staterooms at the very rear corners of a ship might even feature verandas that wrap around the vessel in an L-shape, affording you views on two sides.

On many ships, at least one main dining room is set at the aft, too, so if you are looking to have meal access just a flight or two away by stairs, this might be the right pick for you. However, aft staterooms also tend to be situated a bit farther from the elevator banks, so factor in some extra walking to access them to reach other ship amenities.

Engine equipment is also placed at the aft of a ship, so be prepared for the possibility of some extra vibrations and sounds from the engine room, especially if your stateroom is located on the lower decks of a ship.

Do higher or lower decks matter when booking a stateroom at the forward or aft of a ship?

Luxurious interior of Celebrity Edge Villa

Whatever stateroom you choose , be sure to consult with a travel agent or do some independent study of the ship’s deck plan before you book to ensure you get a good gauge on what’s surrounding your stateroom—and that means what’s above, below, and directly next to it.

If noise is a consideration, you’ll likely want to avoid units too close to high-traffic areas that are potential noise sources, like elevator banks. And you probably don’t want to book right below the pool deck or above the nightclub or theater if you’re noise adverse or a light sleeper. The quietest staterooms tend to be the ones insulated by other staterooms above, below, and on either side.

On the flip side, there may be an amenity that you’d like easy access to. Maybe you love being steps away from the spa (often found toward the forward of a ship) or Oceanview Café (casual dining venues are typically located at the aft of a ship), for instance. Or, being close to the stairwell or elevator bank might be essential for you. So be sure to look at deck plans for these potential locational perks, too.

Couple eating on cruise veranda

Veranda Stateroom

Also keep in mind that whether you book forward or aft, lower-deck staterooms are typically priced lower than higher-deck ones. That’s because staterooms closer to the top of a ship are traditionally considered more desirable, especially on warmer-weather voyages, since alfresco attractions like the pool and sundecks are clustered on the ship’s top decks. Higher-deck staterooms also offer better vantage points and panoramas.

Read: What Deck Is Best on a Cruise Ship?

Which side is best for staterooms?

Veranda in the aft of a ship

The best “real estate” on a cruise ship really is subjective and based on your personal tastes and preferences. That said, there are benefits when it comes to booking your stateroom in either the forward or aft of a ship.

In short, if you’re not adverse to motion and are after a unique front-perch view, the forward of a ship might be the best bet for you. If you are keen on a view out over the ship’s wake and the potential for scoring a larger veranda (and don’t mind the potential for some extra vibration), then the aft of a ship is probably the right move.

Keep in mind, too, that there is a case to be made for forgoing both sides and simply booking a midship stateroom. You’ll be in the center of the action, within fairly equidistant striking distance of most ship amenities, which is a saving grace for those with mobility issues.

Elegant interior of Celebrity Summit suites

By contrast, when you’re tucked away off to the sides of the ship, it’s quieter. And in general, the staterooms at the forward and aft of a ship will have more unique layouts than the more standardized midship staterooms, which may or may not work in your favor.

Which side is best for sunrises and sunsets?

Celebrity Edge sailing at sunset

Celebrity Edge

If having a perfect perch for the daily spectacle of sunset—or, sunrise, if you’re an early riser—is high on your list, you’ll want to review your itinerary carefully. Of course, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so you’ll want a stateroom that faces primarily east for the duration of your itinerary if sunrise is what you’re after, or west if you’re more interested in sunsets.

If your itinerary is anything but a straight line, chances are that you’re likely to get at least a little bit of both on any one cruise vacation. Be sure to ask ahead to better ascertain the stateroom’s anticipated orientation and views out to sea. Keep in mind that there are ample public decks on the ship, so you’ll have access to the perfect sunrise/sunset spot no matter where you stay.

The forward is subject to the most movement out of anywhere on a ship. And the higher the deck, the more pronounced that rolling and swaying motion tends to feel.

Movement at the aft is a bit less drastic than the forward, but still isn’t the most stable place for those who are prone to seasickness. Instead, if you want to avoid motion sickness,  aim to book a stateroom set as close to the center of the ship as possible, on a lower deck, where you’re guaranteed the smoothest ride and most stability in the case of turbulent seas.

Eerie tale of abandoned cruise ship left to rot for 24 years after captain ‘deliberately’ rammed boat into tourist beach

  • Zeenia Naqvee , Foreign News Reporter
  • Published : 20:21, 18 Aug 2024
  • Updated : 7:55, 19 Aug 2024
  • Published : Invalid Date,

THIS is the sinister story behind a deserted cruiseliner that was intentionally run aground by its desperate captain, it is alleged.

Disaster struck when the MS World Discoverer hit an uncharted reef in the Solomon Islands and unwittingly established itself as a tourist attraction.

The ship remains moored on the stunning Solomon Islands

It's now a half-sunken  ocean liner visibly tipped to one side where it's left to rot in the very same Pacific spot where it was grounded in April 2000.

The German-made vessel has been abandoned for 24 years was originally built by Schichau Unterweser in 1974 and was able to navigate the  Northwest Passage .

It was first sold to the Danish company BEWA Cruises and then two years later to Adventure Cruises Inc.

In 1990 the ship was registered in  Liberia  and six years later underwent a complete refurbishment.

The globetrotting cruise ship featured an observation lounge, a library, a sun deck with a swimming pool and a small fitness centre.

Measuring 287ft (87m) in length, it was able to carry nearly 140 passengers.

But the fateful spring journey ended its seafaring career for good .

The ship began to list and captain Oliver Kruess had no choice but to  ground her  in the beautiful Sandfly passage of the Nggela Islands.

British passenger David Wright described the moment the ship was brought into Roderick Bay.

"It was just rammed into the beach, breaking trees in the forest, which stretches down to the shore," he told  The Herald .

"It was quite spectacular. And when we reached the beach, we could see a tree hanging from the prow of the ship."

Everyone on board was safely evacuated, but the ship has since been been  left to rust  and slowly crumble into the ocean.

Several salvage companies have made attempts to retrieve the ship, but to no avail.

The ship has become a popular tourist attraction for both locals and those who visit the Solomon Islands.

What is the SRN $ 80 charge line item for?

This is listed under the 3rd person (teen) for our room reservation.  What does it stand for?  Is it refundable if the teen doesn't come on the cruise?  Port fees would be refunded if the teen doesn't come right?

Ship? Sailing?  In Europe you pay the service charges up front so it could be that.  More info needed to help.

No, absolutely not. Only for cruisers from special markets who paid the port fees separated from the cruise fare. For other customers nothing will be refunded in case of a no-show.

Its a 4 night cruise out of Port Canaveral.

It just has a line item for SRN $80 listed for the 3rd person in the room (a teen).  Its lists the cabin price, that charge, then taxes and fees. cabin fares 119

Gov't fees and taxes 110.00

Wondering if this is for Non alcoholic drink package for teen.

$20/ day x 4

Promos are usually only for passengers 1 and 2.

Thanks

Quite likely!... Promos are just for pax 1 and 2 pretty much everywhere. If you have a drinks package, teen will need to pay for the teens non alcoholic version, even if it's a "teens sails free" promo, and port fees are bundled on your base fare.

Like

I had to call to ask a questions about something else and they told me it was just taxes.  That on their end they see it broken down that way for passenger 1 and 2 also (but I just see cruise fare on my end)?   but who knows, that's also an easy response so I don't ask more questions.

For fun, I priced out the 7 day one for the week before ours, and it listed the SRN fee as $159 for the teen.   So if it was just the $20 x number of nights it would have been $140??   We are paying it either way,  I was just curious what it was since its only listed under the 3rd passenger.

Mea culpa; US-centric here, thinking others are the Special Markets - like how Daily Service Fees (gratuities) are included in cruise fares for Brits but Americans pay it in addition.  (Like we pay sales tax on a bill,  but VAT is already in the price of goods.

Thanks for widening my perspective.  (I’m not being sarcastic).
