Shoei J-Cruise II Review

The Shoei J-Cruise II is the updated version of the J-Cruise helmet. The helmet has a particularly unique design and comes with advanced tech found in Shoe’s modular and full-face helmets.

You’ll find a better field of view because of the wider visor, which also protects you from the sun. Also, it allows you to fit the Sena SRL2 BT kit, which is almost invisible when installed, offering you great communication. If you need deeper insights, you can check the complete Shoei J-Cruise 2 review below.

Outer shell and design

Fastening method, ventilation.

You’ll find the AIM shell construction tech in Shoei’s J-Cruise II. The AIM construction comprises organic and glass fiber offering a flexible, strong yet lightweight structure. The Shoei J-Cruise II is an open-face helmet with the benefits of a full-face helmet.

J-Cruise II comes with four shell sizes: MD, LG, XS-SM, XL-2XL, and weighs around 3.76 lbs. So, it’ll fit almost every head size and is lightweight too. When it comes to the color options, you’re going to get black, matte black, white, anthracite, and blue. So, there are a lot of good options available.

The fact that the helmet is Snell M2020D approved and DOT certified talks for itself. Both these standards mean a lot when it comes to helmet safety. So, when you buy a J-Cruise II, you can expect supreme safety.

Inner lining

When it comes to lining, Shoei J-Cruise II completely justifies the premium price. The J-Cruise II comes with an easily removable skull cap and cheek pads. Also, you’ll find press studs used for positioning and hidden tabs that allow a clean and snug fit around the neck.

Every lining material is a blend of silky fabric, fleece, and waffle weave. The silky fabric helps reduce friction, the fleece offers comfort and warmth, and the waffle-weave helps in better cooling and airflow. Also, the bottom of the check pad comes with a vinyl finishing which keeps the water at bay while driving in the rain.

And if that’s not enough, J-Cruise II has a sheathed strap with removable fleece. So, you can wash it whenever you feel like it. However, you won’t find any quick-release cheek pads as it’s easy to open an open-face helmet. Based on Shoei J-Cruise 2 reviews given by customers, the lining offers decent comfort and protection to the user.

shoei j cruise 2

The J-Cruise II comes with a micro ratchet fastener that offers five adjustment positions. You can adjust it further using the standard slide on your chin strap. Now, how can you beat that? You can easily lift the release tab for releasing the strap. It’s quite similar to releasing the seat belt in an aircraft.

When compared to the Double D-ring method, this method takes a bit more adjustment. However, once you adjust it, you can easily do the fastening even while wearing those winter gloves. Also, if you wish you wear balaclavas or buffs, there are enough adjustments available.

The CJ – 2 visor offers three detents:

  • Fully closed
  • Four-fifths closed

With a J-Cruise II, you’ll get pin-lock mounts for CJ-2 Pinlock Evo Insert. However, you need to purchase it separately. Also, there’s an inner sun-visor (QSV-2) which is retractable and protects you from the halo effect. So, you can expect decent protection from the sun.

The J-Cruise II features water and windproof visor seal. It’s definitely better than the previous variant, as Shoei has redesigned the visor seal in this variant.

You may think, why would an open-face helmet require ventilation. But it’s quite important. It’s because when you lock the full-face visor, very little air enters the helmet.

However, you’ll find ample ventilation with this helmet. Three top vents offer a 3-position slide action: close, open, and midpoint. These vents work pretty well in coordination with the exhaust vent found on the back.

Sometimes, you may find a quick mist buildup on cold mornings. However, a pin-lock insert will help you deal with it easily.

For an open face variant, J-Cruise II is surprisingly quiet. What’s the reason? Well, it’s because of the chin spoiler and compound curves. So, if you keep the visor down, you won’t experience unnecessarily loud noises.

In case you partially or completely adjust the visor, there’ll be quite a lot of noise, obviously. However, if you consider my advice, wearing earplugs while driving will solve this problem. So, in terms of noise, you can rely on this helmet.

One of the most striking features of J-Cruise II is its ability to fit the SRL Bluetooth intercom system by Sena. So, you can stay connected with fellow riders or maybe your wife on the go. However, you’ll have to purchase the Bluetooth communication system separately.

Shoei has never disappointed us when it comes to helmets. And Cruise II is enough to prove that fact. It offers everything a bike rider needs, whether you’re on a small route or a large one. From safety, comfort, and quality to communication, Shoei J-Cruise II comes with it all.

And this is everything you can expect from a good helmet. So, if you’re looking for a premium helmet that protects you from impact, sun, and air and is equipped with the latest tech, you must opt for Shoei J-Cruise II. I hope this Shoei J-Cruise II helmet review was informative enough to help you make the right choice.

  • The sun visor offers decent protection from the sun and also allows enough space for you to wear goggles
  • The helmet offers great ventilation which makes it good for sunny days
  • Some users find the helmet quite heavy and bulky
  • The helmet is not as safe as a full-face helmet.

Shoei J Cruise 2 helmet review

It was in 2013 that Shoei first introduced the world to its J-Cruise helmet. It replaced a helmet called the J-Wing that had, in turn, been in the Shoei range for many years. But, for 2020, Shoei has improved and updated the J-Cruise with an upgraded model called, somewhat unimaginatively, the J-Cruise 2.

But the motorcycle world is fast changing, and today the bike park is full of the kinds of bikes that were unheard of 10 years ago. Which begs various questions as to whether the J-Cruise is still a relevant style. What exactly is the J-Cruise? Who wears one? And why? What kind of bike do the people who buy the J-Cruise ride? And how and when do they ride those bikes?

These seem to us to be valid questions because helmets like this and the Schuberth M1 are hybrids that are difficult to categorise and pigeon hole. Clearly, a helmet like the J-Cruise falls short when it comes to considerations of safety and protection. Obviously, such helmets are going to provide greater protection from the elements than a traditional, café racer style, open-face helmet, but in an accident you cannot expect the external visor to provide much by way of physical protection as far as the face and chin are concerned. In fact, there’s a scenario in which a broken visor could even exacerbate injuries.

Schuberth M1 jet helmet

We understand, of course, that most motorcyclists understand the risks they are taking whenever they throw a leg over a bike, and that we all have different attitudes to risk. For me, personally, I’m prepared to wear an open-face helmet only when I deem the danger threshold to be low; when I’m riding locally, when I know that I won’t be on the bike for that long, and when I know that I won’t be exceeding, say, 50 mph. If these conditions don’t apply, then I’ll only put my faith in a full-face helmet.

Of course, some who ride in open-face helmets simply have not contemplated the dangers involved in their headwear choice. It’s possible that some lack the imagination to recognise the potential consequences of an accident. For others, of course, a classic, open-face, café-racer style of helmet is a statement; a fashion statement, perhaps. And we have no issue with this. Dressing up, these days, is part of biking. And most of us will acknowledge that considerations of style have played at least some part in the way that we dress for the bike.

Motorcycle hipster open-face helmet

But a helmet like the J-Cruise is scarcely a fashion statement. It is not a trendy style of helmet, and helmets like these are not bought by fashionistas. It is, we would suggest, a helmet for those who fully recognise and acknowledge the risks they are taking by wearing an open-face helmet. We are talking about the kind of biker for whom a full-face helmet represents almost an attack on their sense of personal liberty. These riders are prepared to trade the inherently increased risk for the wind in your face feeling that a full-face helmet simply cannot provide.

These people tend not to ride sportsbikes. Nor are they part of the hipster brigade, for whom an authentic look is sacrosanct. Commuters, other than those who ride almost exclusively in the urban environment, would not usually wear a helmet like the J-Cruise. And clearly you wouldn’t wear a helmet of this type off road.

We are aware that some people like to tour in helmets like this. They are also popular with some of those who ride cruisers. And we do often see riders of high capacity scooters in them. To wear a helmet like the J-Cruise is, once again, to make a statement. It is to raise a finger to conventional wisdom, to declare that whatever the logical reasons for not wearing an open-face helmet, the wearer wishes to assert the right to ride a motorbike in the manner that he or she wishes.

Cruiser motorcyclist

And, politically incorrect as it might be, we fully support the right of any biker to make such a choice. We cannot be so sanguine when we see people riding their sportsbikes in shorts and flip flops. By and large these people are simply dim. But the people who buy a J-Cruise are not dim. They are grown ups who know what they are doing, and they are prepared to face the consequences of their actions.

There was nothing wrong with the original J-Cruise, and there still isn’t. But time waits for no helmet manufacturer. Technologies change, materials improve, customer demands do not stand still. Recognising all these factors, Shoei set about improving the J-Cruise. And as is often the case in such circumstances, the new product does not differ markedly from its predecessor, although it is still the case that the J-Cruise 2 is undoubtedly an improvement in just about every respect.

The Shoei J-Cruise 1

Whilst visually very similar to its predecessor, the new helmet features a totally new shell. The design of the shell has a bearing on almost every aspect of the helmet’s functionality, but to the casual observer all that can be discerned is slightly more compactness and a differently profiled rear end that now acts more as a spoiler. But the new shell, apparently, contributes to the helmet generating less lift and drag. It also makes a contribution to the fact that with the new helmet there’s a 43% reduced yaw effect at speed, (sideways pull).

What is unchanged is that the J-Cruise still uses Shoei’s multi-composite AIM shell. Also unchanged, in concept, is an eps with different densities in different parts of the helmet.

Shoei will tell you about the differences between the softer fabrics and the more moisture-absorbing fabrics that are used on the internal surfaces of the new helmet. And about how the lower edges now look more like real leather. But all that really interests us is that you can still change both the headlinings and the cheekpads to help improve the fit.

The drop-down sun visor is now deeper than it was on the old J-Cruise. And, fascinatingly, we are told that the cut-out for the nose is also 5mm deeper. But the most interesting change in and around the internal visor is that Shoei has reduced the depth of the cavity into which the visor recesses in order to reduce noise.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 sun visor

The new CJ-2 visor is, of course, grade one optical quality. And it now has a thicker bottom edge to reduce buffeting. In truth, misting up doesn’t tend to be a major issue on helmets like this. Indeed, the J-Cruise 2 is one of the very few Shoei helmets that does not come with a Pinlock in the box. In reality, all you normally need to do to demist a helmet like this is raise your head a little. The incoming air tends to immediately eradicate any condensation. But, even so, Shoei has built into the new helmet a ‘crack’ position that effectively does the same job.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 visor lock

The visor locks down into position when riding, but you simply push on the lower left edge to release it. Historically, Shoei has often used a double-lip construction to seal the visor to the helmet, but on the J-Cruise 2, they have introduced an airtight window beading, which they claim is far more effective. There weren’t really many problems on the original J-Cruise, but let’s not be difficult; better is better.

Getting air onto the face in a J-Cruise is not, as we have suggested, a great challenge, but keeping the head cool is always important, and so, on the new helmet, an extra air intake increases airflow by 30%, whilst wind tunnel work on the top outlet has allowed up to 20% more air to be exhausted from the helmet.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 venting

One of the most visible changes to the new J-Cruise 2 is that it’s now configured to take Sena’s SRL comms. system, as already fitted to the Neotec 2 and GT Air 2. (This is not the same system as fitted to the new Shoei Neotec 3 which takes the SRL-03). Based on the Sena 20 unit, it’s a state of the art package. There’s no unsightly box on the side, and the boom mike is so discrete as to be barely noticeable.

Shoei J-Cruise 2 SRL comms

Most of the other stuff that there is to talk about would come under the heading of detail. A ratchet system for the strap. Four shell sizes. Six actual sizes. Three different thicknesses of headliner per size. Three different thicknesses of cheekpad. And so on.

The old J-Cruise was a great helmet. Clearly, the expectation is that the new model will be even better. Shoei doesn’t tend to mess up when they bring out a new helmet. Evolution rather than revolution tends to ensure that forwards is always the direction of travel.

But for us at Motolegends, the issue on any helmet is always fit. If a helmet fits properly, if the fitting has been professionally conducted, and if the helmet fits the way it should fit then you will have a great experience with your J-Cruise 2. But, even today, there are not many retailers who know how to professionally fit a helmet. There are even fewer who can be bothered. And fewer again who carry all the internals to enable the job to be done. On the J-Cruise 2 alone a dealer would need to hold more than 20 different lining pads. And very few dealers want to do so.

All we would say is that there’s no point in spending a lot of money on a premium quality helmet like a Shoei if it fits poorly. You might as well save money, and buy a cheaper helmet. A helmet that is too generous in its fit in either the cheeks or the forehead will move around and can block your vision. A generous helmet will be less quiet and will not do its job properly from a protection perspective. A helmet that is too tight can cause headaches, will exacerbate condensation issues, and will likewise not do its job properly from a protection perspective.

If you want to make sure you get the fit right on your J-Cruise 2, we recommend that you come to see us in Guildford. Here at Motolegends, we will always hold in stock the J-Cruise in all sizes, although not necessarily in all its colourways, although if ever we are out of stock of a design it can normally be obtained the next working day. And, of course, we will always carry the internal liners.

Finally, price. The J-Cruise costs £429.99 in white, but you can pay up to £519.99 for the most complex graphics. The SRL comms. costs £259.99, but you will save 20%, (£43), if you buy it at the same time as the helmet.

We do not, by and large, clutter the market with promotions, special deals, loyalty discounts and voucher codes. But our 10% Price Beat guarantee means that we will always be 10% cheaper than anybody who discounts any product we sell. And it seems to us that you cannot be fairer than that!

Shoei J-Cruise Helmet Review

Shoei J-Cruise Helmet

The Urban Feel Helmet from Shoei

Are you looking for an upgrade in as far as helmets are concerned? You need to take a look at the new Shoei J-Cruise helmet. Although this helmet doesn’t have a chin bar, it feels just like a full-face helmet. Let’s simply say it has all the incredible features you will expect to see in a Shoei helmet. Here is a look at some of the incredible features that make the Shoei J Cruise helmet so popular among urban bikers.

Shoei J-Cruise Helmet

Paint, graphics and the overall quality

Shoei is known for its quality helmets and that fact is true for this particular helmet. The Anthracite Metallic is one of the features that you pay for. Monster Energy design shown to the left.

As the Anthracite Metallic color is used in other Shoei helmets so are the features that carry the same design and styling themes. This helmet is special and you can judge that from the movement and feel of the large face shield and the vents.

Although Shoei seems to be a bit coy, when it comes to shell constructions of the J-Cruise helmet, the paint quality is just the best. The helmet has a thick-feeling clear coat that gives it a good protection for a long time. That’s why you are given the five-year warranty.

Just like in the GT review, this helmet also has a new internal sun visor design. With the optical grade quality sun visor, this is a big difference especially if you compare it to the rest. You will notice the difference in clarity making other sun visors look bad.

Shoei Solid J Cruise Motorcycle Helmet

Shoei J-Cruiser Liner

According to Shoei, the CJ-2 face shield on the Cruise has a totally different design. The new outlook makes it appear wider and taller than the J-Wing, its predecessor. This is an important factor since every rider wants to see much more in front and below. So if you have your speedometer and other instruments on the fuel tank, try out this helmet.

Shoei says that the helmet blocks 99% of UV light with its uniquely designed face shield. This also provides near full-face coverage in terms of wind protection. The bottom of the visor is almost even with the bottom chin. This is much better that most of the open-face helmets in the market.

The locking tab or button at the lower left side of the face shield holds it in position and the fact that it has no moving parts makes it unique. The small molded indent on the visor fits over a dimple in the receiver on the shell.

The special molding process is used to eliminate distortions across the wide surface. This is perhaps the reason why the clarity and optical quality of the face shield is just not ordinary. That’s not all, Shoei claims that the Ditto for the internal sun visor, which is also optical grade sunglasses quality, exceeds the ANSI Z80.3-2010 Standard for non-prescription eyewear. If you compare this to other helmets, you will notice a very big difference.

Ventilation

Another similarity that can be seen for both the J-Cruise and the GT Air is the outstanding ventilation system. You will be able to notice similar-looking top vents on both helmets. You will not notice anything unusual when you inspect the top vent on the Shoei J-Cruise. At first glance, you will notice that the helmet has a lower profile than most of the upper vent systems seen.

DJI Osmo Action 4

DJI Osmo Action 4 – The Ultimate Action Camera for Motorcyclists?

However, this really works when you try the helmet on. In fact, the air is directed down on the rider’s head through two huge vent holes though the EPS. This system is able to work since the liner is specially designed to match the vent holes. If the weather is cool, the air flowing in can be too much you will be forced to close the vent.

Just like the dual rare exhaust vents, the flat slider on the top/front vent also has two positions. Most riders leave them open most of the time whether the front vent is closed or open.

As expected for an open –face design, the Shoei J-Cruise allows a lot of air to flow from under the face shield. The good thing about this helmet is that the face shield is large enough to stop too much of the air flow. This means that the air coming from underneath doesn’t feel different from most of the full-face helmets.

Noise levels

Open-face helmets are known to be too noisy as compared to the full-face helmets. This noise is in most cases created by the open bottom or the too short visors. This noise has been reduced in J-Cruise thanks to the large face shield and the solid shell design. This makes it better than other open-face helmets.

If you consider most of the full-face helmets, you will notice that the noise levels in J-Cruise are better than most full-face helmets and this is good thing.

Tested: Shoei J-Cruise II Jet Helmet Review

Stephen Lamb - bio pic

By Stephen Lamb

Production Manager - Still considers himself a novice rider, despite passing his test nearly thirty years ago.

Once the preserve of scooter riding city commuters, does the jet style helmet give a realistic alternative to traditional full-face helmets?

While the idea of additional ventilation on an open-faced helmet may seem like overkill (I certainly did before wearing it), you soon realise that it's just as essential as on any full face helmet.

With the full-face visor in the locked down position, I was amazed at how little air entered the helmet from underneath, and on warmer days I was soon reaching for the large and easily accessible top mounted vents to get some air flow though the lid. On colder mornings, the visor is quick to mist when fully closed. This would be solved with a pin-lock insert, which surprisingly was not included with the helmet.

The three top vents have a three-position slide action – closed, open and a mid-point. On the move, they work very well at providing a strong flow of air through the helmet, working in conjunction with the rear exhaust vent.

Once the preserve of scooter riding city commuters, does the jet style helmet give a realistic alternative to traditional full-face helmets?

The large CJ-2 outer visor has three position detents – fully closed, fully open and a position which is best described as four-fifths closed, which is useful for slow speed use and avoids the above-mentioned visor misting. When closed, the left-hand bottom corner of the visor (which has a circular detent) locks onto a corresponding peg on the cheek of the helmet. Raising the visor when locked down requires outward force to 'unhook' the peg. It sounds more complicated than it is in practice, and soon becomes natural.

The visor is easily changed with a simple lever on each side which, when fully open, releases the visor's pivot mount. A range of visors are available for the J-Cruise II including clear (as shown), light and dark smoke (not legal for road use in the UK) and for that retro-vibe a smoke mirror finish (also not UK road legal).

All main visors are equipped with Pinlock mounts for, but unfortunately not supplied with, a CJ-2 Pinlock Evo Insert. If you are thinking of upgrading from the J-Cruise to the J-Cruise II, it's worth noting that the same Pinlock insert is compatible with both helmets.

The inner, retractable sun-visor (QSV-2) is shared with the GT-Air II full face helmet and provides a 5mm larger shaded area than the outgoing J-Cruise helmet. This goes some way to avoiding the bright halo effect that plague some helmets with a drop-down visor, though fit is important to ensuring that this is minimised as there is still a significant gap around the bottom of the visor. The inner visor is also replaceable and is easily removed. Two levers positioned between the shell and the cheek pads lock the visor in the lowered position, allowing the mounting clips to be carefully opened and the visor removed. The inner visor is available in dark smoke (as tested) or yellow, for enhanced contract in low light conditions.

The visor is raised and lowered by a side-mounted slider which, while large enough to operate with winter gloves, isn't quite positioned where you would expect it. Even after a nearly six months and over a thousand miles of use, I find myself feeling around for the lever.  Once found though, the visor is raised and lowered (the slider operates in reverse to the visor – lower the slider to raise the visor) with a smooth and easy operation and I found no issues with wearing glasses under the visor.

Once the preserve of scooter riding city commuters, does the jet style helmet give a realistic alternative to traditional full-face helmets?

The lining is really where the Shoei J-Cruise II excels and reflects its premium price point. The cheek pads and skull cap are easily removable from the J-Cruise II using both press studs for positioning, and hidden tabs along the edges to ensure a snug and clean fit around the neck skirt. Each lining element is made of a combination of smooth silky woven fabric for the high friction areas, fleece for warmth and comfort in areas that are likely to be exposed to airflow (the back of the neck and the cheek pads), and waffle weave for the skull cap allowing increased air flow and cooling. The lower surfaces of the cheek pads are finished in a water-resistant vinyl like material to prevent the liner from wicking water up from the base when worn in driving rain. Finally, the strap is sheathed with a removeable fleece liner which is held in place with press studs. While fiddly to remove and replace, at least these can be washed when needed.

As removal of the helmet in emergencies is easier than a full-face helmet, there are no quick release cheek pads in the J-Cruise II.

Once the preserve of scooter riding city commuters, does the jet style helmet give a realistic alternative to traditional full-face helmets?

The Shoei J-cruise II is fastened with a micro ratchet fastener allowing five adjustment positions. Further adjustment is possible via a standard strap adjustment slide on the chin strap. The release tab is simply lifted to release the strap, in the same way that aircraft seat belt releases and is easy and quick to use, even when wearing bulky winter gloves. This fastening method takes a bit more setting up compared to a traditional double D-ring, but once done, makes for much quicker and easier fastening while still allowing a range of adjustment should you wish to wear buffs or balaclavas under your lid.

Fit is very subjective and you should always try on a range of helmets before making your choice. This is especially true with the Shoei J-Cruise II where the combination of a deeper shell and the thicker brow (housing the internal visor) meant that I had to go up a size from my usual Medium to a Large.

Due to the compound curves and chin spoiler on the large visor, when down, the Shoei j-Cruise II is very quiet – surprisingly so for an open face helmet. Naturally when open, or partially open, there's a fair amount of wind noise as the visor mechanism and interior of the helmet are exposed to the airflow. I did notice a small amount of noise from the internal visor adjustor slider mounted on the left side of the helmet, but I'm really nit-picking now. I always wear earplugs when riding and made no exception for the J-Cruise II.

For more information on why earplugs are vital with any helmet, and advice on which are the best, click here .

I'd always dismissed Jet helmets as only being for scooter riders but I have to say that my opinion was totally changed by the Shoei J-Cruise II, which has quickly become my first-choice helmet when I'm out and about - no matter what bike I'm riding.

Clearly it's not  going to be a safe as a full face helmet and, for example, wouldn't be allowed on track days, but for the majority of daily riding this is great choice of helmet and well worth trying if are looking for a change from the norm.

shoei j cruise usato

SHOEI COMLINK

shoei j cruise usato

  • SHOEI COMLINK

J-Cruise 3(J

J-cruise 3(j

J-Cruise 3(J

J-Cruise 3(J

J-Cruise 3(J

AIM / AIM
  • 重量: 1,400g(Mサイズ/ヨーロッパ) / 1,431g(Mサイズ/日本)
SHOEI COMLINK / SRL/SRL2

shoei j cruise usato

Une nouvelle référence pour les casques Jet ?

Shoei J-Cruise 3
