LIV Golf Tour Boston: Date, field, teams, payout info, course

This is everything you need to know about LIV Golf Boston, the fourth event of the fledgling circuit's controversial series.

LIV Golf Boston is the fourth $25million event of the controversial series ' inaugural season.

It is the first tournament after golf's civil war finally made its way to the courtroom after several LIV players were named in an antitrust lawsuit .

Originally, there were 11 players who took legal action. Three of those players, Hudson Swafford, Matt Jones and Talor Gooch also attempted to force their way into the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Playoffs .

A federal judge denied their request. Subsequently, two players decided to withdraw their names from the lawsuit. Pat Perez, who previously turned heads when he worse a t-shirt made out of dollar bills at a LIV draft party, and Carlos Ortiz, have opted out of legal action .

LIV Golf Boston also comes at a time when the PGA Tour revealed their masterplan to deal with LIV.

They have announced dramatic increases to prize purses, jacked up their Player Impact Program and have pledged guaranteed cash of $500,000  for fully exempt PGA Tour members that go against their tournament winnings.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have also confirmed they will be starting a Monday night golf league, called TGL, in partnership with the PGA Tour.

Greg Norman, the LIV Golf chief executive, reacted to the news by claiming that the PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan was "copying" their homework.

2022 LIV Golf in Boston leaderboard: Talor Gooch takes slim lead over Joaquin Niemann into final round

Gooch remains atop the leaderboard and looks to become the first american to win a liv golf event.

LIV Golf Invitational - Boston - Day Two

The cream has risen to the top of the leaderboard at the 2022 LIV Golf event in Boston. The Oaks Course at The International was defenseless on Saturday as players took advantage of accessible pin locations and a hefty dose of wedge shots around the Tom Fazio redesign. While Friday belonged to Matthew Wolff, Saturday was all Talor Gooch. The overnight co-leader backed up his opening round of 7-under 63 with a 5-under 65 to maintain his spot atop the leaderboard by himself.

Looking to become the first American to win in the LIV Golf Invitational Series, Gooch stands at 12 under with just 18 holes to go. Consistently on the first page of the leaderboard throughout his short tenure with LIV Golf, Gooch will attempt to fend off LIV Golf newcomer Joaquin Niemann at 11 under, as well as a friendly face in Dustin Johnson -- his fellow 4 Aces teammate -- at 10 under.

Just as they have done in the past two LIV Golf events, the 4 Aces are well-positioned to claim the team title. With Gooch and Johnson leading the way, Phil Mickelson's Hy Flyers and Kevin Na's Iron Heads will hope to provide drama in the team portion of the event. Between the individual race among three of the biggest names in LIV Golf and a tight team competition, the final round is set up to provide fireworks outside Boston.

1. Talor Gooch (-12)

The 2021 RSM Classic winner looks to capture his second professional victory in less than a year. Gooch has been one of the most consistent players since the onset of the LIV Golf circuit, finishing ninth in London, seventh in Portland and T6 in Bedminster. While these strong performances have produced team titles, he has yet to truly contend individually.

The biggest area of concern with Gooch is often his inaccuracy off the tee. With tree-lined fairways at The International, we should know early in his final round if there are any nerves in his system, as he has a tendency to hit a quick hook when in contention. If that shot is nowhere to be seen, the 30-year-old should love his chances to win his first LIV Golf event and lead his team to its third.

Talor Gooch didn't slow down as the outright leader after round 2 #LIVGolf #LIVGolfBoston pic.twitter.com/Us7KyM7UMh — LIV Golf (@LIVGolfInv) September 3, 2022

Other contenders

2. Joaquin Niemann (-11)

3. Dustin Johnson (-10)

4. Anirban Lahiri (-9)

T4. Matthew Wolff, Jason Kokrak, Kevin Na and Bernd Wiesberger (-8)

Unless Wolff can recreate the magic from Friday's round, this event has turned into a three-horse race between Gooch, Niemann and Johnson. Despite being the elder statesman among his peers, Johnson is currently in the midst of a massive drought in terms of victories; he last raised an individual trophy at the 2021 Saudi International when he was world No. 1.

With Gooch and Niemann capturing wins during the 2021-22 PGA Tour season, one has to wonder if the nerves will reside in the veteran Johnson. Finishing T3 at LIV Portland and T2 at LIV Bedminster, the two-time major champion has been trending to the top spot and should take solace in knowing he is the most prolific winner on the first page of the leaderboard.

Sihwan Kim wins most improved

Kicking off his LIV Boston event in a nightmare fashion, Kim more than struggled on his inward half in the first round at The International. Carding three double bogeys and a 10, Kim came home in 15-over 50 and ultimately signed for a 17-over 87 on Friday. Perhaps changing his breakfast or his typical morning routine, Kim was born anew on Saturday.

The two-time winner on the Asian Tour improved by 24 shots in Round 2 and signed for a 7-under 63 -- tying Johnson for the lowest round of day. In the process, Kim aided the Iron Heads in their quest for the team trophy. They are currently on the podium in solo third, just one stroke behind the Hy Flyers in second.

Is a 4 Aces dynasty in our presence?

Since adding Pat Perez and Patrick Reed, the 4 Aces have gone undefeated, raising trophies at the LIV Golf events in Portland and Bedminster. Despite their team's success, no member of the 4 Aces has gone onto to win the individual title in unison with the team portion of the event.

Johnson and Gooch are firmly in the mix to win the solo crown and with three of four scores counting towards tomorrow's team competition, both players will need to balance the urge to attack pins with the need to maintain the team's margin over the rest of the squads.

LIV Golf Continues to Try New Ways to Be Noticed

Whether it’s the team concept or a decision to allow its golfers to play in shorts, the breakaway Saudi-backed series so far sees itself as the anti-PGA Tour.

boston liv tour

By Bill Pennington

BOLTON, Mass. — The LIV Golf event outside Boston was minutes from beginning on Friday, and Greg Norman, the frontman for the insurgent Saudi-backed circuit, needed a new, showy way to make an entrance in the rancorous battle for the future of men’s golf.

How about jumping from an airplane and parachuting onto the first tee? Surely, Norman’s nemesis, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, had never done that?

So it was that the hundreds of fans crowded around the first tee lifted their eyes to the sky to watch as Norman, who was harnessed to a retired military parachutist, dropped across the backdrop of a clear blue sky until he touched down in front of the tee.

Separated from his escort, Norman bolted upright and raised both fists triumphantly. As he marched toward the tee, a fan yelled: “Greg, the PGA Tour is done. You did it, baby!”

Looking a bit stunned, if delighted, Norman turned in the direction of the voice. He pointed a finger and flashed the widest of smiles.

The scene could have been a metaphor for the most turbulent season in modern professional golf history: When LIV Golf suddenly appeared on the horizon this spring, the risk was manifest as the circuit searched for a welcoming place to drop into an occasionally inhospitable sport. In a surprise, LIV Golf has not only landed on its feet, it is defiantly celebrating.

Despite the volume of one fan’s shout, the PGA Tour is far from done or even from losing the clash with its rival. Last week, it began a muscular counterattack. But as the fourth LIV Golf event concluded at the International Golf Club on Sunday, the evidence was mounting that the rebel tour was not retreating either. In fact, it continues to find new ways to be noticed.

Consider the great dump-the-trousers crusade that unfolded here in Saturday’s second round. In its unceasing effort to be the anti-PGA Tour, which includes not having large tournament crowds or a broadcast TV contract, the LIV Golf leaders decided Saturday to allow players to wear shorts.

The PGA Tour does not allow its members to show legs in competition. The LIV Golf decision moved players on the circuit to say they felt freer, an odd choice of words for a group guaranteed at least $120,000 (with expenses paid) for their appearance at the tournament.

“This is a long time coming in the game of golf; I think it just takes a disrupter like LIV to get things done,” Phil Mickelson said of wearing shorts.

There was only one snag in the dress code golfing revolution that LIV Golf was hoping to ignite: The majority of the golfers kept their pants on. Maybe these guys like golf tradition more than anyone suspected.

I have now spent six days (two tournaments) inside the LIV Golf bubble since late July, and there are certain evident, noteworthy truths. One is that the rival circuit is clearly attracting a younger, more boisterous crowd than the typical PGA Tour gallery, portions of which can be reserved and sometimes removed, i.e., watching from an air-conditioned corporate box. LIV Golf’s chief motto is “Golf, but louder,” and with a recurring thunderous soundtrack of Beastie Boys, Twisted Sister and AC/DC, the circuit is living (no pun intended) up to its billing.

Asked about the thumping music that can be heard on all 18 holes, Sergio García quipped, “I’m trying not to dance too much.”

Cameron Smith, who is ranked second in the men’s worldwide rankings and who was the breakaway tour’s splashy new acquisition last week, refuted the suggestion that the music is a diversion or a gimmick. “To me,” Smith said, “it feels like the course has a bit of heartbeat.”

The LIV Golf leadership is also convinced that the key to the tour’s success is its team concept, which is new to golf. The goal is to replicate the success of the Formula 1 team model. But the LIV Golf teams had a clunky rollout earlier this year when team members kept changing, which further confused potential fans who already could not identify or remember the 12 team names, let alone their four-man rosters.

As an example, I stopped 10 fans on the golf course Sunday and asked them to name just one LIV Golf team. Three could do it, six could not, and one grinning guy astonishingly started rattling off the team names one by one until I realized he was looking over my shoulder at a scoreboard with all the team names and scores.

But next year, LIV Golf, whose major shareholder is the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, will expand the number of tournaments, and the four-player teams will remain unchanged tournament to tournament, barring injury. Players on each team may even wear matching outfits of some sort, like a uniform, to drive home the team concept. The plan is also to make teams have a unifying theme: four Australians led by Smith, a South African team headed by Louis Oosthuizen, and other teams bound by nationality. LIV Golf has heavily recruited Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, in hopes of heading a Japanese team.

The LIV Golf crowds at events are still sparse despite tickets being exceedingly cheap on the secondary ticket market. The attendance, which LIV Golf does not announce, is roughly one-fourth of what would be expected for a PGA Tour event.

The LIV Golf version of a fan village alongside the golf course has considerable energy, with myriad golf skill contest booths and food trucks that might evoke a county fair. There also seems to be a bar, with a line, at every turn.

But there is something else noticeable about the fan village. A giant screen was showing the golf taking place over on the course. I checked several times over three days, and while there were hundreds of fans standing and sitting around inside the village, it was rare to see anyone even glance briefly at the screen.

The competition, for all its newness, does resemble an elite golf tournament with the kind of booming drives and deft short games that only the world’s best players hit. Dustin Johnson won the 54-hole event on Sunday in a playoff over Joaquin Niemann and Anirban Lahiri.

But especially early on, some of the usual tension of a PGA Tour event, where the understanding is that a victory can be career-changing, was missing. On the driving range and the practice putting green before play begins, the atmosphere was unusually light and carefree — as if most of them knew that they had already been paid handsomely with guaranteed, upfront money. Which, of course, is the case.

But LIV Golf is in its infancy, and its baby steps have included the successful, stunning recruitment of a sizable number of prominent golfers — a flock that very few thought could be assembled so rapidly. The circuit has now played half of its scheduled tournaments, and it is not going away.

Monahan, the PGA Tour chieftain, is highly unlikely to consider Norman’s jumping out of an airplane a challenge that he must respond to in kind. But gaudy gestures aside, the new reality of men’s golf is that neither LIV Golf, which seemed to drop out of nowhere, nor the established PGA Tour is backing down.

LIV Golf Boston: How to watch the fourth tournament this weekend in Massachusetts

With the PGA Tour’s season now over, the LIV Golf Invitational Series is back for its fourth tournament this weekend outside of Boston.

LIV Golf will play at The International this weekend about an hour west of Boston in perhaps the Saudi Arabian-league’s biggest event yet. Though the controversy hasn’t died down, and there are now lawsuits involved and a plan from the PGA Tour to fight back, LIV Golf will debut a much stronger field in Massachusetts.

[ Set, hut, hike! Create or join a fantasy football league now! ]

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the tournament this weekend.

How to watch

LIV Golf still doesn’t have a television deal in the United States. The tournament will be streamed for free on the league’s YouTube and Facebook pages, as well as LivGolf.com .

The tournament will run from Sept. 2-4, and will start at 1:15 p.m. ET each day.

Who are the team captains?

There are a few new team captains this week in Boston.

4 Aces - Dustin Johnson

Niblicks - Harold Varner III

Majesticks - Lee Westwood

Iron Heads - Kevin Na

Stinger - Louis Oosthuizen

Cleeks - Martin Kaymer

Crushers - Bryson DeChambeau

Hy Flyers - Phil Mickelson

Fireballs - Sergio Garcia

Smash - Brooks Koepka

Torque - Joaquin Niemann

Punch - Cameron Smith

How much does the winning team make?

Each regular season LIV event has a purse of $25 million.

Of that, $5 million will be split between the top three teams, with the top team receiving $3 million. The remaining $20 million will be split individually, with the first-place winner earning $4 million and the last-place finisher receiving $120,000.

By comparison, The Players Championship offers a purse of $20 million, which is the most in any single event on PGA Tour outside of the Tour Championship.

Who is new in the field this week?

LIV Golf got a new batch of members this week after the Tour Championship officially wrapped up the PGA Tour’s season on Sunday.

Reigning British Open champion and World No. 2 Cam Smith finally confirmed what had long been a rumored move on Tuesday morning, something that now gives LIV Golf its best player by far. Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale, Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri also officially left for LIV Golf.

Both Cam Young and Hideki Matsuyama said after the Tour Championship that they will be sticking with the PGA Tour instead. The two had been rumored to be considering leaving for LIV Golf.

With the latest additions, LIV Golf now has 12 of the past 26 major championship winners.

What about the BMW PGA Championship?

Once LIV Golf’s tournament ends on Sunday, 18 players will make the trek from Boston to Europe for the BMW PGA Championship — one of the biggest tournaments on the DP World Tour’s schedule.

While LIV Golf members have been suspended by the PGA Tour, they are allowed to compete in this specific event at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The DP World Tour will still hit them with a fine.

It will mark one of the first times that the two groups of golfers will mix on the course since LIV Golf’s inception.

“I hate what it's doing to the game of golf. I hate it. I really do,” Rory McIlroy said of LIV Golf after his win at the Tour Championship . “Like it's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn't sit right with me.
“So yeah, I feel strongly. I believe what I'm saying are the right things, and I think when you believe that what you're saying is the right things, you're happy to stick your neck out on the line.”

Phil Mickelson laments his 'atrocious' results since joining LIV Golf

1420242681

Phil Mickelson plays his shot from the 18th tee during the first round of the LIV Golf Invitational Boston.

Charles Laberge/LIV Golf

BOLTON, Mass — Phil Mickelson did not mince his words Friday at the LIV Golf Invitational Boston. His scores have been terrible since returning to golf in June—which he did at LIV Golf’s opening event in England—following a personal break he took to allow the dust to settle from inflammatory comments he made about how the PGA Tour conducted its business.

That first LIV round outside London was a solid, one-under-par 69. But Mickelson has not broken 70 in 13 rounds since then, which includes missed cuts at the U.S. Open, the Open Championship at St. Andrews and Friday’s 74 at the par-70 course at The International outside Boston. The score put Mickelson fourth from last in the 48-man field and 11 shots behind leaders Matthew Wolff and Talor Gooch.

“I'm certainly frustrated because I'm playing well at home and I'm not bringing it out here; I feel I'm closer than it looks even though the scores have been atrocious,” Mickelson told Golf Digest on Friday.

The six-time major winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member said he was playing great golf at the handful of courses he plays in his native San Diego. But translating that to tournament rounds is the issue.

“It's the little things,” he said. “I'm forcing it a little bit out here. [For example] hitting a great shot on the very first hole today to 25 feet and three-putting [for bogey]. Just little mistakes like that, I'll have to clean up.”

The 52-year-old, though, is optimistic about things on and off the course going forward.

Outside the ropes, Mickelson has been credited with being the catalyst for recent changes to the PGA Tour’s schedule that will see bigger purses and its top 20 stars committing to a schedule in 2023. On Thursday, he told Sports Illustrated that the PGA Tour’s changes would not have occurred without a rival golf circuit, but did not take credit.

Inside the ropes, Lefty said better scores would come soon. He cited his ability to overcome slumps in his career, including a largely poor stretch that lasted from March 2019 until May last year. That slump ended when Mickelson became the oldest major winner in history at the PGA Championship at Kiawah.

“I've had lows in my career, and I fought through them. I'm excited to fight through this one, too,” Mickelson said. “I'm motivated. I'm having fun. I'm enjoying playing. I'm working on my game and I'm excited to compete. I'm hitting a lot of shots that make me optimistic. Back home, I've been playing well, and I just need to bring it from home out here.”

If there’s any consolation, Mickelson’s LIV team, Hy Flyers GC, is leading the LIV Boston event at 11 under, courtesy of teammates Wolff (63) and Bernd Wiesberger (66). “The great thing about this teams [concept] is we've got Matt and Bernd who have put us on top of the leaderboard even though I played terrible today,” Mickelson said. “[But] I can contribute tomorrow and I'm going to see if I can turn it around and do that.”

Liv golf: mixed feelings outside boston about saudi-backed golf tournament, share this article.

BOLTON, Mass. — A town divided.

That appears to be the case in Bolton, Massachusetts, a small town of roughly 5,600 residents and the site of the LIV Golf Boston event over Labor Day weekend at The International Golf Club that could bring daily crowds in excess of that number.

Some in town are concerned about potential traffic jams from the event that runs from Friday through Sunday, wrapping up the day before Labor Day.

But the division is largely centered on LIV Golf, the entity that runs a new series that includes The International. LIV is financially backed by the government of Saudi Arabia.

What bothers some residents is that country’s reported human rights abuses, and the potential message it sends to outsiders that Bolton somehow condones those abuses.

“I was disappointed when I heard the tournament is coming here,” said Joe Myerson, a Bolton homeowner for nearly 40 years who has served on town boards and committees.

Some Bolton residents raised a total of $1,100 to pay for opposition messages during the event, said Patrick Mahoney, who is part of a group that doesn’t want the event in town. Mahoney put the number of people who donated the cash at more than 20.

Protesters will have their say in a designated area near a parking lot that is normally used for the Bolton Fair, said Bolton Town Administrator Don Lowe.

That lot is the only authorized parking area for tournament visitors, and shuttle buses will operate between the lot and The International.

Division in Bolton

Lowe acknowledged the division in town, where he has worked as town administrator for the past 13 years.

“There are differing opinions,” he said. “Some are strongly opposed, and some residents see it as beneficial, that it will help businesses, given the economy.”

Bruce Slater, owner of Slater’s restaurant on Main Street, said he sees the tournament as an economic boost for businesses in Bolton and surrounding communities.

“This is a world-class event that is a great thing for the town,” said Slater, who traces his family’s roots in Bolton back to the 1950s.

When asked about the event’s connection to Saudi Arabia, Slater said The International is a private business doing business with another country.

“There are other private companies doing business with other countries that are equally as bad,” Slater said.

He continued: “There’s a lot of hypocrisy in this country. This event will bring people in. I’m hoping it doesn’t bring a negative light on the town.

“I love this town, and this tournament is a great thing.”

Several businesses on Main Street declined to comment because they didn’t want to be caught in the middle of a controversy.

Sue Loring, owner of the Quilted Crow, doesn’t think the tournament will bring much business to her fabric and quilt shop but there could be traffic backups outside her store on Main Street.

As for the tournament’s connection to Saudi Arabia, Loring said she didn’t know much about it, adding, “I don’t want to go there.”

In a prepared statement from The International, the club said it’s excited to bring “big-time” golf to the area.

“LIV Golf wanted to come to our area in its first year and we’re excited to be bringing big-time golf to our region. We’ve been tracking the fan experiences at each of LIV Golf’s previous tournaments and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, consistently showing that fans have been thrilled with the experience and eager to attend again in the future. Golf fans, sports fans and entire families are sure to have a blast.”

Escalante Golf, the Texas company that owns The International , did not respond to a Telegram & Gazette request for comment.

Crux of the division

The crux of the division is the financial backer of LIV Golf, a rival league to the established PGA Tour.

That backer is Mohammad bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince and chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The fund is reportedly the majority shareholder in LIV Golf Investments, the entity that puts on the LIV tournaments.

boston liv tour

Protests have marked the LIV tournaments since the inaugural event held outside London in June.

Last month, 9/11 Families United protested at a LIV tournament at the Trump National Golf Course in New Jersey, where they expressed outrage about the Saudi-backed league and the country’s ties to the 9/11 attacks.

The Saudi regime is also linked to violent crackdowns on dissidents, including the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A declassified U.S. government document indicated bin Salman ordered the murder.

Earlier this month, a Saudi court sentenced a mother to 34 years in jail after she tweeted messages in support of women’s rights.

Those developments concern Mahoney, who also spoke of a reported “Tiger Squad” that hunts down bin Salman’s opponents.

“I prefer the town do business with those that adhere more to basic, core American ideals, like freedom of expression,” Mahoney said. “The kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for us, we can’t forget the bad stuff that it’s doing.”

Can’t stop it

Both Mahoney and Myerson acknowledged there is nothing to stop The International and Escalante Golf from hosting the event because it’s a private business.

However, they see it as a case of “sports washing” by bin Salman and the Saudi regime, a term to describe investing in sports properties that generate public enthusiasm in order to divert attention from human rights abuses.

“[LIV] is trying to polish up the sinister image of bin Salman, showing him as a sports benefactor,” Myerson said.

Public safety and security

Keeping residents safe and secure during the three day event is Lowe’s focus.

Local police, state police and fire department details will be on the scene that will allow a maximum of 6,500 attendees daily. That includes golfers, volunteers and media, according to Lowe.

LIV Golf will pay for those details, plus a 10 percent administration fee.

Lowe made it clear that Bolton’s municipal government isn’t making a penny from the tournament, to dispel any notion the town is being bought off by LIV.

Some opponents, including Mahoney, feel the event was a done deal before residents caught wind that it was happening.

Lowe said he got a courtesy call in March from Steve Brennan, general manager at The International, three hours before a news release from LIV that announced the tournament was potentially coming to Bolton.

Meetings involving the town, LIV and The International started in March, according to Lowe. The town’s Select Board didn’t take up the matter in open session until early June, and in another open session later that month, the board issued the necessary special permit to move the event forward.

All permits issued by the town were done through standard channels that all local businesses and residents must adhere to, Lowe said.

$1 million payment?

There’s also a matter of a LIV payment to local nonprofit organizations, and Lowe said he heard the total payment could reach $1 million.

Lancaster is interested in getting some of that money because the tournament’s parking lot is located in that town. That comes with security expenses to maintain traffic flow and public safety.

LIV Golf Bedminster

Lancaster Town Manager Kate Hodges said Mike Goggin, the tournament’s director, told her last week that several entities in Lancaster are going to get cash donations.

“(Goggin) said he would send me a list of those entities, and I haven’t received it,” Hodges said Thursday morning. “I’m holding my breath.”

A LIV spokesman stated in an email that LIV Golf will soon announce details of its charitable support for the local community.

LIV to Give, the entity’s charitable arm, announced in June a $100 million commitment to support programs centered on education, environmental sustainability, golf development and the well-being of communities.

As for how Lancaster feels about the tournament, Hodges pointed to two issues.

“Number one, there’s the issue with the sponsors of the tournament and where they receive funding,” he said. “That’s personal to folks here.”

The other issue is the designated protest area which is causing some nervousness in town. But residents are feeling much better on that point, Hodges said, because local police updated the Select Board this month on security plans.

Lancaster police meet weekly with state police to make sure the security and traffic plans are in place. Bolton police also meet weekly with state police, Lowe said.

Some to attend — others won’t

Lowe’s staff will attend the tournament because they have jobs to do. But Lowe won’t, because he said it could be a distraction for his staff.

“I serve no role there,” Lowe said.

Slater said he hopes he can find time in his busy schedule to watch some of the golfers in action.

If he can, he’ll bring his camera, because he would like to get a picture of superstar Phil Mickelson, a former PGA Tour headliner who is now affiliated with the LIV series. Mickelson reportedly signed a $200 million contract to join LIV.

“If I can sneak out and take a picture of Phil Mickelson, then I would be happy,” Slater said.

Happy is not a word to describe Myerson and Mahoney — they will not set foot at The International.

“It’s regrettable the town is being used to burnish bin Salman’s murderous regime. Bolton can’t do anything about it. Except, not to go,” Myerson said.

“If other places act like we act, then (the Saudi government) will not succeed in rebranding themselves,” Mahoney said of those in Bolton who oppose the tournament.

“We’re a small town, and we don’t want this here.”

Simone Biles , from Spring, Texas, is the undisputed greatest gymnast of all time. The four Olympic medals she won in Paris were just icing on the cake for a career that has spanned three Games.

“You know, it's bittersweet,” Biles said. “You’ve worked your whole life for moments like this and you almost take it for granted how fast it goes. Last night I definitely had a good cry about it, because I couldn’t believe it was over I called my mom and my sister and I was like, ‘It’s done’. But they were happy tears.”

She also talked about why it is so important for her to be open about her mental health.

After 54 years, Aerosmith announces retirement from touring

  • Jim Sullivan

The news came as both a shock, and yet not, on Friday, Aug. 2: Aerosmith, long dubbed the Bad Boys from Boston, announced their retirement from touring.

It came down to singer Steven Tyler’s voice, and the damage done to his vocal cords and larynx last year. (Aerosmith has been vague about how the injury occurred.) A statement posted on the group’s website and social media accounts read: “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before the injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

Is it over for good?

It seems so. But a keyword in the release could be “touring.” The statement did not address the possibility of a residency situation down the road, as they have done in Las Vegas previously, starting in 2019. Nor did it address their status as a recording band, and in interviews conducted before last week’s announcement, co-founding guitarist Joe Perry had always left the door ajar.

Given the description of Tyler’s current situation, though, both scenarios seem unlikely. Their last album of original material, “Music from Another Dimension,” was released in 2012, their first in over a decade. Still, frequent Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas cryptically posted on Facebook: “Keep in mind, the Beatles quit touring in [19]66 after which they did their finest work.”

Responding to a request for comment, Perry’s wife and manager, Billie Perry, texted, “He doesn’t want to talk,” indicating the band’s public statement would suffice. (Perry will undoubtedly crank up his off-and-on The Joe Perry Project; he also plays in the Hollywood Vampires with Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Tommy Henriksen.)

“This only happened a few days ago and I’m basically trying to deal with that,” said Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton in an email. “Most of my focus has been on recording bass parts for a band I’ve been playing with. We have a bunch of great songs."

The now-canceled 40-city farewell North American tour, called “Peace Out,” was slated to start in Pittsburgh on Sept. 20 and run through Feb. 26, 2025, including a New Year’s Eve performance at TD Garden. Since the 2019 “Deuces Are Wild” residency at Park MGM in Las Vegas, Aerosmith’s planned engagements have been problematic, stop-and-start affairs. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down the residency in early 2020. A return in the summer of 2022 was scrapped, with Tyler checking into rehab for his addiction to opiates after foot surgery. They played Fenway Park on Sept. 8, 2022, and then resumed the Vegas residency.

The “Peace Out” tour was announced May 1, 2023, and began in September of that year. They played three shows – in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Elmont, New York – but were forced to the sidelines under doctor’s orders: Tyler was instructed not to sing for 30 days. The injury was then deemed more substantial, and the tour was scrapped.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, Aerosmith has sold over 150 million albums worldwide. Formed in Boston in 1970, the band developed a sound that was clearly blues-based, revamping old blues and R&B songs much like its heroes the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds initially did. In 2021, Perry told me of these early days, “I thought it was the kiss of death to sit around and play slow blues. If it was a blues song that rocked, that was another story.”

While Aerosmith established a growing fan base in the early- to mid-1970s, the group stumbled as the late ‘70s and ‘80s rolled out. Tyler and Perry were nicknamed “The Toxic Twins,” a sobriquet that fit the “bad boys” tag and one they didn’t slough off. But drug addiction took its toll, prompting Perry’s famous quote in the 1997 autobiography the band wrote with Stephen Davis, “Walk This Way.” "We were drug addicts dabbling in music rather than musicians dabbling in drugs.” Then came rehab, relapses and more rehab.

Over the years, there were other numerous near-crippling issues, including various disputes among band members and management conflicts, illnesses and injuries. Perry exited the band in 1979 and guitarist Brad Whitford did the same in 1981.

“We got caught up in our party routine,” Perry told me in 1986. “Our music suffered. The whole band was creatively in a slump. When I look back on it now, I guess I’m embarrassed, but that’s the way it had to go. That’s us. We’ve always been masters of our own destiny and it was kind of on autopilot for a while and kind of broken down.”

boston liv tour

Both guitarists rejoined in 1984 and the band had something of a career renaissance. They collaborated with Run-D.M.C. for a rap/rock crossover remake of “Walk This Way,” something Perry said “sounded fresh and streetwise, a great adventure.” Following that was the MTV hit “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” which Tyler and Perry co-wrote with Desmond Child, and “Janie’s Got a Gun,” co-written by Tyler and Hamilton. By the ‘90s, Aerosmith felt confident enough to open and co-own a rock club on Lansdowne Street in Boston, Mama Kin, which operated from 1994-1999.

Musically, Aerosmith has also had a lot of well-documented highs and lows. The first four albums catapulted them to the top of America’s hard rock pile. Commercially speaking, a collaboration with pop songwriter Diane Warren in 1998 yielded the power ballad “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” It was an anomaly in Aerosmith’s oeuvre, but their only No. 1 hit, staying there four weeks on the Billboard chart. Aerosmith had a career resurgence.

But one of the best high points was that early period, getting signed to Columbia Records and releasing that first album. It was the summer of 1973. Aerosmith was gigging around Boston and the suburbs, playing original music, but the dam had yet to burst.

“I remember being at a gig — I think it was Shrewsbury. It was a 2,000-seat place and it was packed. It was like, ‘Wow, what happened here?’” Perry told me in 2018. “Our manager at the time walked in and said, ‘Boys, we came to play!’ and he had this wad of one-dollar bills. We weren’t in it for the money or the ride-around in limos or anything like that; we just wanted to not have to worry about the rent so we could keep doing it.

“To this day, it’s really about that. The money just gives you the freedom to do what we do. But that was it, that day it felt like something switched, something changed.”

boston liv tour

“Dream On,” the hope-springs-eternal power ballad that first displayed Tyler's high-pitched scream and catapulted Aerosmith to early fame, has become a touchstone for multiple generations. In the beginning, the other four guys weren’t keen on recording the song, which Tyler wrote as a teenager. With its piano-based intro and slow build, “Dream On” was something of an outlier and, Perry said, they envisioned themselves as a band where “rock ‘n’ roll was key. But we also knew ‘Dream On’ had something to it.”

Perry said Tyler had the song pretty much together when he came into the Commonwealth Ave. apartment in Allston the band shared at the time. “He had a piano in there. I’m not sure how we got a piano into that apartment. But we heard the riff over and over again and it became part of our DNA and we built it up. We also knew it was really hard to get a rock ‘n’ roll song on the radio past a certain point and with that ballad, we didn’t know where it was going to go, but it worked.”

At the 2022 Fenway concert, Aerosmith started their encore segment with “Dream On.” Whitfield, Hamilton and John Douglas (the former drum tech filling in for sidelined drummer Joey Kramer) were on the main stage. Tyler had ascended to a spot atop the Green Monster, hitting the high notes while sitting at a white grand piano, Perry playing guitar at his side. The guys on main stage pumped out a psychedelic jam while Tyler and Perry made their way back down, closing the night with “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.”

Recalling that encore almost two years later, from the viewpoint of ironic, wistful hindsight, you can’t help but think: Yes, dreams live on, but the emotion is bittersweet, and Aerosmith won’t be walking this way again.
