Riverboats depart frequently from Frankfurt for day-trip excursions and pleasure cruises on the Main and Rhine Rivers in Germany.

Pleasure cruises on the Main and Rhine rivers are easy to enjoy from Frankfurt am Main. Primus and KD boats have several sightseeing cruises on the Main River – often with meals or after-work drinks – allowing passengers to enjoy views of the skyscrapers of Germany’s top banks and financial institutions. Longer day-trip cruises go to other destinations on the Main River and even on the Rhine. Buy tickets online for Primus or KD panorama one-hour cruises in Frankfurt.

River Boat Cruises from Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt is a popular departure point for riverboat cruises – both for multiple-day cruises and shorter day excursions. Several cruise lines call at Frankfurt but the biggest operators of day-trip cruises are Primus Lines and KD . It is generally easiest to use the line with the most departures, as prices are very similar.

Cruises on the Main River from Frankfurt are possible year-round — even a few times in January and February. The main cruise season is from April to October when cruises depart daily. During winter, except for the Advent Christmas market period, cruises are very limited and mostly on weekends only.

Day-trip excursion boats depart mostly from the northern shores of the Main River near the Eiserner Steg (pedestrian bridge). It is a short walk from the Römer square at the heart of Frankfurt’s old town .

Day-trip pleasure cruises from Frankfurt may be divided into four basic groups:

• Short circular sightseeing or panorama cruises beginning and ending in Frankfurt lasting generally an hour or two. (Very frequent)
• Half or full-day cruises on the Main River mostly to destinations upriver from Frankfurt. (A few times per month)
• Full-day cruises from Frankfurt to destinations on the Rhine River. (Very limited — using the train is a better option)
• Event and theme cruises (reservations are usually essential).

Circular Sightseeing Panorama Pleasure Cruises from Frankfurt

The classic Frankfurt am Main circular sightseeing panorama cruise trips are 50 minutes upriver turning back near Gerbermühle or downriver turning at the Griesheim Schleuse (lock). Combining the upriver (Mainaufwärtz) and downriver (Mainabwärtz) cruises is hardly more expensive than a solo trip.

From April to October, these cruise boats depart daily at least seven times (more on Sundays). In March, boats depart on most weekends as well.

These panorama cruises are easily booked online for either Primus or KD boats .

A similar hour-long cruise departs a few times per month late at night as Sky-Light Tours to show off the lights of Mainhatten (Main + Skyscrapers reminding of New York + a lot of wishful thinking!). Departure times range from 20:30 to 22:00 depending on the time of sunset.

Day-Trip River Cruise Excursions on the Main from Frankfurt

A few times per month, day-trip excursions are possible from Frankfurt am Main upriver to Seligenstadt and even all the way to Aschaffenburg.

Seligenstadt is closely associated with Charlemagne and the main sight here is the Romanesque basilica that dates partly back to 830. Aschaffenburg is much larger and more interesting. Top sights in Aschaffenburg include the largest Renaissance castle in Germany, the Pompejanum (a copy of a Roman villa from Pompeii), and a collegiate church.

Cruise times from Frankfurt are around 3h30 to Seligenstadt and five hours to Aschaffenburg (slightly faster coming back). Combination tickets are available to do one leg of the journey by train.

The ship usually returns from Seligenstadt and Aschaffenburg two hours after arriving. In between, the riverboat offers local circular sightseeing cruises on the Main.

Day-Trip Cruises to the Rhine from Frankfurt am Main

A few times per year, it is also possible to cruise from Frankfurt am Main to Rhine River destinations including Rüdesheim , the Loreley Valley , Mainz , Wiesbaden , and occasionally Heidelberg on the Neckar River . Often, for these excursions, a bus is used one way.

The most frequent cruise is from Frankfurt down the Main River to Mainz and then on the Rhine River to Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, returning a few hours later to Frankfurt. It is usually possible to change to another boat in Rüdesheim to cruise down the Loreley Valley and return by train from St Goarhausen.

Cruise traveling times from Frankfurt am Main are around 3h to Mainz, 3h30 to Wiesbaden-Biebrich, and 5h to Rüdesheim. The upriver returns are slightly slower.

On the whole, most travelers may find it better value (both time and money-wise) to take the train from Frankfurt to Rüdesheim and cruise on the more interesting part of the Rhein from Rüdesheim rather than take the boat down the Main.

Special Event and Theme Cruises from Frankfurt

In addition to the regular circular sightseeing and scheduled cruises, many special events and theme cruises also depart from Frankfurt. Reservations are usually required.

Special event cruises are available year-round including New Year’s Eve cruises , cruises to see firework displays, theater, and music performances. Meal cruises often celebrate the start of a new harvest season.

After Work Shipping cruises depart a few times per week with drinks and a disco. Similar cruises are occasionally also available for departures from Mainz and Wiesbaden-Biebrich.

Tickets & Deals on River Cruises from Frankfurt am Main

Primus Lines sells only return tickets – this means that the price is usually the same whether returning by boat or by train to Frankfurt (but around €4 more expensive from Aschaffenburg or St Goarhausen, where an additional ticket must be bought at the station). Indicate at the time of purchase whether the return will be by boat or train.

Ticket prices for Primus Lines and KD in Frankfurt often differ only by a few cents making it hardly worth waiting for a later boat if cruising spontaneously.

Combination tickets (RMV Kombitickets) allow one leg of the journey by train, which is faster and allows travelers to stay longer at a destination than the boat does. If the RMV Kombiticket is bought in advance from Primus Lines, passengers can take the train to the destination, cruise back to Frankfurt, and continue to use public transportation from the Main to home. Alternatively, buy the combination ticket with the boat ticket to return after the cruise by train.

Reservations for regular circular and scheduled cruises on the Main and Rhine are usually not necessary but it is easy to buy tickets online for Primus and KD panorama cruises . Special event cruises usually require reservations, although available tickets are sold until the boat departs.

Children under 6 years (4 for KD) cruise free (maximum three children per paying adult) and children 6 to 14 pay half price.

Dogs and bicycles are mostly transported for free. Primus does not have a free-cruise-on-birthday policy – for such savings try KD lines . KD also has a more generous discount policy for seniors – starting at 60 years rather than 63 as on Primus – and for students up to 27 years old.

Great tour guide in Michael. The actual river cruise was a disappointment - too short and could not hear the commentary. Perhaps going up stream would have been better.

This was a wonderful tour; well worth the money. You get a little bit of everything: - Bus tour to Rüdesheim am Rhein with comedic host (Michael); it's about an hour - Ski lift ride over the vineyards (in good weather ... which it was) - Lunch at a tavern down by the river (just the right size you will pay for your drinks) - Ride on the river where you get to see the beautiful scenery with quite a few castles; about 1 hour 20 minutes (would have liked this to be a little longer) - Bus ride back to tavern for a little wine tasting of a red, white, reisling and eis wine (this is a little sampling, not like when you go to a vineyard) - 30 minutes to shop or visit Rüdesheim (would have like this to be a little longer) Overall, a good experience and be sure to bring camera.

The Rhine tour.. eliminate the wine tasting sham. That is a total waste of time. Better to have more shopping time in Rudesheim.

Founded in 1794, the Deinhard house in Germany stands for sparkling wine. This 200-year tradition has its origins in the Koblenz headquarters in the middle of the unique cultural landscape between the Middle Rhine and the Moselle. Since last year, the city of Koblenz has turned it into a sparkling wine museum. Your A-ROSA host will take you to this historic headquarters on a small train. Here you will get to know the tradition of sparkling wine at close quarters and embark on an exciting journey back in time in the cellar museum. The hearts of wine and sparkling wine lovers beat faster here. The soul of wine culture can be felt in every part of the vault. Join us on a relaxed panoramic trip through the 'Vulkaneifel' near Koblenz and to the famous pilgrimage site Maria Laach. The 'Vulkaneifel' is considered a valuable natural heritage and has been designated a European Geopark by UNESCO. Drive along this beautiful nature and discover numerous 'Maare' - funnel-shaped volcanic openings filled with water. Your way continues to the 'Laacher Seetal'. The lake and its surroundings form the largest nature reserve in Rhineland-Palatinate. The medieval Benedictine monastery Maria Laach is also picturesquely situated on the banks of the lake. After a short stop, the bus will take you back to Koblenz on your panoramic journey.

The imperial town of Boppard is located close to the narrow horseshoe bend of the Rhine. In the 4th century the Romans replaced their citadel by a stone fortress with 28 towers, which however was soon overrun by Germanic tribes. The former free imperial city was subjugated in 1327 by the elector Balduin von Trier. Balduin immediately had the electoral Trier castle built, thereby forcing the uncooperative inhabitants to accept his rule.

The picturesque wine-growing town of Boppard is situated in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Even the Romans settled here. Today the town is not only known for its historical architecture, but also for its finest Riesling wine. The tour takes you to the medieval noble courts, the Roman fort, the Electoral Castle, the majestic Church of St. Severus and the beautiful Carmelite Church built around 1300.

This combination of a city walk and a bus tour takes you to modern boulevards and along the mighty bank skyscrapers, to the quaint district of Sachsenhausen with its apple wine taverns and the historic Römerberg (Roman Mountain). The eponymous 'Roman' has been the city hall since the 15th century. No less impressive is the Baroque Hauptwache (Main Guard House), the Old Opera and the magnificent neoclassical rotunda of St. Paul's Church.

Discover the financial and banking capital Frankfurt am Main and its green surroundings in comfort by e-bike. Pass the Main Tower and the beautiful old opera house and head into the countryside. Past Solmspark and over the Lohrberg, the destination is the Main Applehaus, where you can taste a glass of freshly pressed apple juice. Enjoy the view over the Frankfurt skyline while surrounded by the orchard meadows. After a short break, you can comfortably return to the ship via the Lohrberg and the Museumsufer.

The Taunus counts as a local recreation area for one of Germany's largest metropolises. On a tranquil panoramic drive, the route takes you past places like Kronberg and Königstein and along the Taunus High Road to the Feldberg, the highest peak in the region. You will then drive through picturesque climatic health resorts to the romantic Weintal valley and the Hessenpark, where you will briefly stop to visit a reconstructed historic market square. The journey continues towards the Saalburg Roman fort and Bad Homburg before returning to Frankfurt.

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre ’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. Rüdesheim is the best-known spot in the Rheingau and has plenty of cultural attractions, including stately homes and fortifications. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.

Let the Winzerexpress take you on a tour through vineyards and right into the centre of Rüdesheim. Here, the little lanes are too narrow for our trusty vehicle, so you’ll explore the old town on foot. You’ll find one of Germany’s most well-known streets here: Drosselgasse. Lined with wine taverns and bars with outdoor seating, it offers 144 metres of pure enjoyment. You’ll have the opportunity to stop off here to learn how the traditional coffee speciality ‘Rüdesheim coffee’ is made – and you’ll be able to try it for yourself, of course.

The Rüdesheimer Berg is home to several of Germany's best vineyards.
