Visiting Pearl Harbor: 22 Things You Need to Know First + Helpful Tips

Last Updated: September 2, 2024 //  by  Ashley Smith Leave a Comment

Visiting Pearl Harbor is a must for any visitor to Hawaii , whether you’re a history buff or not. Being the location of Japan’s attack on the United States Navy that essentially triggered World War II for the U.S., this is one of the most historically significant sites in the entire country. But what is “Pearl Harbor” and what all does visiting Pearl Harbor entail?

This post will cover all of that and more. If you’re searching for how to visit Pearl Harbor, what all there is to see and do here, and pick up some super helpful tips along the way, you’re in the right place. I’ve visited Pearl Harbor multiple times, most recently in August 2023. Let me make visiting Pearl Harbor as easy as possible for you!

Why visit Pearl Harbor?

As one of the most historic locales in America (and the world actually), visiting Pearl Harbor should be on every Oahu itinerary . Japan’s attack on the U.S. Navy here on December 7, 1941 was the event that launched the United States into World War II . (And we all know what happened next.)

Beyond the significance of that , the attack in and of itself remains one of the most tragic events in U.S. history. Japanese attackers killed 2,403 American Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, and civilians in an attack that lasted just 1 hour and 15 minutes. Of those, 1,177 died aboard the USS Arizona after the battleship was hit by four bombs, exploded, and sank to the bottom of the harbor with its crew trapped inside.

So why should you prioritize visiting Pearl Harbor on your next visit to Hawaii? That’s easy:

  • Visiting a place you’ve read/heard so much about your entire life adds an entirely new dimension and appreciation to the history . (The way books and movies can’t.)
  • To keep the lessons of the Pearl Harbor attack alive ; that whole “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” thing.
  • To honor this massive loss of life and the many, many more who risked theirs so that we could live in a world free of tyranny.

You should also consider some of the interesting WWII hikes on Oahu while you’re here to check out some of the former pillboxes and other defense remains around the island. If hiking isn’t your thing, check out these other great WWII sites on the island.

Visiting Pearl Harbor: How to Prepare

The Pearl Harbor attack was an extremely complex event—one I’ve studied in depth as a World War II historian. To try to simplify it here would do both you and the history a great injustice. (Plus, chances are I would get wildly carried away.)

Instead, take a look at this list of Pearl Harbor books I’ve put together and choose one (or a few) that sounds the most interesting to you. If you’d rather wait to learn until you get there, that’s fine too. You already know enough to be interested, and if that’s enough to get you here, then that’s plenty. So, let’s get to planning your Pearl Harbor visit!

Visiting Pearl Harbor: Map of sites

This map contains all the sites listed in this post, including all the Pearl Harbor memorials and museums plus where to eat in the area. To save: Click on the star ⭑ next to the map’s title to save in your Google Maps. To use: When you get there, open Google Maps on your phone, click “Saved” at the bottom, then click “Maps.”

What actually constitutes “visiting Pearl Harbor?”

Well, I guess the first thing you need to know about visiting Pearl Harbor is that…

1. “Pearl Harbor” is not just one thing.

Visiting Pearl Harbor isn’t as simple as just showing up to a single museum or historical site. That’s because “Pearl Harbor” isn’t just one thing; it’s actually a handful of different sites that relate to the Pearl Harbor attack .

Many of these sites are run by the National Park Service and are collectively known as the Pearl Harbor National Memorial . There are also some additional privately-run sites that make up “Pearl Harbor.” As such, visiting Pearl Harbor can actually entail visiting any or all of the following sites: (Click on each one for more information, or skip to the list of things you need to know for visiting Pearl Harbor.)

  • Pearl Harbor Visitor Center
  • USS Arizona Memorial
  • Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (USS Bowfin Museum)
  • Battleship Missouri
  • Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

Other Ford Island sites

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center will be your first stop when visiting Pearl Harbor. This open-air complex of buildings contains a museum, a ticket and information booth, restrooms, a book store/gift shop, baggage storage, film theater, a virtual reality center, a handful of various memorials and art pieces, and a short walking trail with historical information panels.

This is also where you’ll catch the boat to the USS Arizona memorial and the shuttle bus to the other sites over on Ford Island.

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is run by the National Park Service and there will be park rangers on site to answer any questions you might have. Regardless of how interested in history you are, at the very least you should check this place out.

Pearl Harbor Visitor Center Information:

  • Hours : 7 days a week from 7:00am – 5:00pm
  • Closed : Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day
  • Admission : Free
  • Parking : $7/day
  • How long to budget : 2 hours

The USS Arizona Memorial is the small white building that sits on the water over the ruins of the sunken battleship. This is what most people think of when they imagine visiting “Pearl Harbor.”

Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial is a solemn but meaningful experience as you learn about and pay your respects to the 1,177 men who died (and still rest) here. If you visit only one Pearl Harbor site, it should be this one.

How to get to the USS Arizona Memorial

The only way to access the USS Arizona Memorial is by boat —provided and operated by the U.S. Navy (but managed by the National Park Service). Each visit includes a brief introduction, a short boat ride to the memorial, 15 minutes aboard the memorial, and then another quick ride back to the Visitor Center.

Some websites will tell you that a visit to the Arizona also includes an introductory film . And while there is a 23-minute film you can watch beforehand, you don’t need a USS Arizona ticket in order to see it. You can do this with or without a reservation to take the boat over. (And you should definitely do this!) Films start at the :15 and :45 minute mark of each hour, all day.

How to get USS Arizona Memorial tickets

Tickets to visit the USS Arizona Memorial are free* but require advance reservations due to capacity limitations. (Big demand, small memorial) To reserve your USS Arizona tickets, head over to recreation.gov . (You’ll need to start an account if you don’t already have one.)

* Admission to the USS Arizona Memorial is free, but there’s a $1 “reservation fee” on the online platform that’s mandatory for making reservations. Whatever. And parking is $7. For more on all the Pearl Harbor ticket costs and fees (plus a bunch of ways to save money) see my full post in that link!

Tickets can be reserved up to 8 weeks (56 days) in advance. However, if you don’t tend to plan ahead that far, they do release additional tickets every day at 3:00pm (HST) for the following day. For example, tickets for tomorrow (Sunday, Nov 5) will be released today (Saturday, Nov 4) at 3:00pm Hawaii time (9:00pm Eastern).

This is how I reserved my ticket in August, and they sold out for the next day within a few minutes. I’m just saying, if you plan to go this route, you better be on it . There are no walk-up tickets or day-of releases.

USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Information:

  • Hours : Daily from 8:00am – 3:30pm, boats leave every 15 minutes
  • Closed : Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and in bad weather/high winds
  • Admission : Free-ish
  • Parking : $7/day at the Visitor Center
  • How long to budget : 2 hours – though the actual boat ride and memorial visit last just 45 minutes, they recommend you plan to arrive early to ensure you can find parking and get checked in with plenty of time. If you miss the boat, there are no do-overs.

  • Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum

Next door to the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center is the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, sometimes referred to as the Bowfin Museum. If you want to learn more about submarine warfare while visiting Pearl Harbor, this is the place for you.

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum includes an indoor museum, outdoor artifacts and information panels, a waterfront memorial, a restaurant, a gift shop, and restrooms. But the star of the show here is the USS Bowfin —a World War II fleet submarine.

With a combined 4,000 artifacts, the indoor museum and outdoor areas are great at painting some interesting pictures of naval warfare during World War II. You can look through a submarine periscope and even inside a Japanese Kaiten! (A manned torpedo, basically the underwater version of a kamikaze plane, which I’ve never seen anywhere else before.)

But definitely spend a good chunk of your time here aboard the Bowfin. You can tour the entire 312-foot interior as well as walk all along the top. And if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll see a sea turtle eating barnacles off the side like I did. (It’s the small things.)

The USS Bowfin didn’t enter service until 1942 so it wasn’t actually present during the Pearl Harbor attack. However, it was launched on December 7 to mark the 1-year anniversary of the attack. During its wartime service in the Pacific, it sank over 30 enemy vessels and damaged 7 others, earning it the nickname “ Pearl Harbor Avenger. ”

Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum Visitor Information

Despite its location, the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum is not one of the sites operated by the National Park Service. Separate admission is required.

  • Hours : Daily from 7:00am – 5:00pm
  • Closed : Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
  • Admission : Adults : $21.99 general / $16.99 military and Hawaii residents / free for active military in uniform. Children (4-12) : $12.99 general / $8.99 military and Hawaii residents. Children under 4 : Free, but not permitted on the submarine. Self-guided audio tours are included with admission.

The USS Missouri is a battleship that not only saw service in WWII but also served as the location of the surrender ceremony that ended the war . It was here that American and Japanese officials met to finalize Japan’s surrender documents on September 2, 1945.

The Missouri was decommissioned in 1955, brought back into service in 1986, decommissioned for good in 1992, and eventually parked here at Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor so we could all take tours of her and be utterly amazed.

In addition to the main surrender deck, you can also tour most of the ship all on your own . You’ll see things like the maze of sleeping quarters, medical rooms, officers’ rooms and lounges, mess halls, and tons more on multiple ship decks. There are also a number of informative exhibits throughout the ship.

On the main deck, you can see the damage done by a kamikaze plane that hit the ship in April 1945, the spot where the surrender ceremony took place, and the absolutely massive guns this thing used to fire.

But first, I highly recommend starting your visit with one of the free tours that’s included with your admission —they’re fantastic!

Battleship Missouri Visitor Information

  • Hours : Daily from 8:00am to 4:00pm
  • Admission : Adult : $34.99 general / $26.74 military. Children (4-12): $17.99 / Children under 4: Free
  • Parking : $7/day at the Visitor Center, then you’ll have to take the shuttle bus here
  • Need to know : Battleship Missouri is partially accessible to wheelchair users and others with mobility impairments. See their accessibility info here .

Also over on Ford Island is the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum which contains an incredible collection of World War II aircraft (and more). You can see a Japanese Zero, hang out in historic Hangar 79, tour the Bob Hope exhibit (one of my favorite parts actually), and even try out the 360° flight simulator in case you weren’t too keen on keeping your lunch down.

  • Hours : Daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm
  • Admission : Adults: $25.99 / Children (4-12): $14.99 / Children under 4: Free

Beyond the five main “attractions” here, there are a handful of other sites worth checking out when visiting Pearl Harbor. These include:

  • USS Oklahoma memorial – Another battleship that was sunk in the Pearl Harbor attack on which 429 Sailors and Marines lost their lives. More information here .
  • USS Utah memorial – Yet another battleship that was sunk that day, killing 58 men. More information here .
  • Ford Island Historical Trail – History-focused walking trail around Ford Island where you can see homes where the officers were living during the attacks, the scars of Japanese strafing, bomb craters, and other significant sites and memorials related to the Pearl Harbor attack. More information here .

Need to know: In order to see the Ford Island sites when visiting Pearl Harbor you’ll need to either have military access or a reservation for the special Ford Island tour (more on that below).

Things to know before visiting Pearl Harbor

I totally understand if you already feel like visiting Pearl Harbor is about as complex as the event itself. But it doesn’t have to be! Now that you know what actually constitutes “Pearl Harbor,” here are the rest of the most important things to keep in mind when planning your visit.

2. Visiting Pearl Harbor can be whatever you want it to be.

As I mentioned, “Pearl Harbor” isn’t just one site; it’s a collection of sites. But that doesn’t mean you have to visit them all. You should definitely plan on visiting Pearl Harbor while you’re in Hawaii, but that will mean something different for everyone .

On my first visit in 2007, I visited only the Visitor Center, the USS Arizona memorial, and the Battleship Missouri in about half a day. On my most recent visit in 2023, I visited all of the 8 sites mentioned above over two days.

If the history really interests you , it’s definitely worth setting aside a couple of days in your Oahu itinerary to visit all the sites. It’ll be a long couple of days, but totally worth it. Otherwise, you can simply pick and choose which museums you want to see.

If you’re only casually interested in the history but still want to say you’ve visited Pearl Harbor, at the very least you should check out the Visitor Center and take the boat ride to the Arizona memorial.

3. Pearl Harbor is still an active military base.

Pearl Harbor’s use as a military installation didn’t end with the attack in 1941; it’s just that today it’s known as Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam —a mashup of the U.S. Air Force’s Hickam Air Force Base and the U.S. Navy’s Naval Station Pearl Harbor.

Because Pearl Harbor is still an active military base, you will need military access (or know someone who does who is willing to escort you) in order to visit some of the historical sites.

In case you’re wondering–no, I don’t have military access myself. But, my gracious friends in the Navy who live on Oahu were happy to show me around Ford Island.

4. Some of the Pearl Harbor sites are off-limits to civilians.

Visiting Pearl Harbor as a civilian means some of the sites will be off limits to you . These include (but are not limited to) some of the ones located on Ford Island. However, there are a few here that you are still allowed to visit, with conditions .

Visiting Pearl Harbor as a civilian

If you’re not an active military member and/or do not have military access, here’s what visiting Pearl Harbor looks like for you:

  • Pearl Harbor Visitor enter – No restrictions
  • USS Arizona Memorial – No restrictions (other than you have to take the NPS-provided boat over; you can’t drive your own boat up to the memorial)
  • Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum – No restrictions
  • Battleship Missouri – Must park at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and take the shuttle bus to the battleship on Ford Island. No leaving the battleship premises. You must return to the Visitor Center via the shuttle bus.
  • Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum – Must park at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and take the shuttle bus to the museum on Ford Island. No leaving the museum premises. You must return to the Visitor Center via the shuttle bus.
  • USS Oklahoma memorial – You can walk from the Battleship Missouri to the Oklahoma memorial which is right outside the entrance. You must arrive and return via the Visitor Center shuttle bus.
  • USS Utah memorial – Must have military access or a reservation for the Ford Island Bus Tour.
  • Ford Island Historical Trail – Must have military access or a reservation for the Ford Island Bus Tour.

Visiting Pearl Harbor as active-duty military

If you’re an active member of the military with military access, you’ll be able to visit any and all of the Pearl Harbor sites without any restrictions. (Just don’t forget your ID, obviously.) You’ll be able to drive right over the Admiral Clarey Bridge to Ford Island and park for free in front of both the Battleship Missouri/Oklahoma memorial and the Aviation Museum. You won’t need to take the shuttle bus anywhere.

You’ll also be able to drive over to the USS Utah memorial, park your car, and freely explore the Ford Island Historical Trail without restriction.

And I can’t say this enough, but thank you for your service !

5. Here are the discounts available for military/veterans.

If you’re active-duty or retired military, there are a handful of discounts available to you while visiting Pearl Harbor. Here’s where you can save some cash:

  • Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum – Reduced admission for military ($16.99 instead of $21.99) in-person only. Military personnel in uniform get in for free.
  • Battleship Missouri –  $10.70 off admission for active duty or retired military (+ everyone else in your party) and veterans (but only you). In-person only.
  • Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum – Reduced admission for military ($21.39 instead of $25.99 for adults and $10.69 instead of $14.99 for children), in-person only. Military membership discounts also available.
  • Hangar Café – The restaurant inside the Aviation Museum offers discounts to active military and DOD employees.
  • Pearl Harbor Visitor Center gift shop – 10% discount for active-duty military personnel and veterans.

6. You must take the shuttle bus to certain sites.

Even though some of the stuff you’ll do when visiting Pearl Harbor is located on Ford Island—the active military base— you’ll still be able to go as a civilian . In order to visit sites like the Battleship Missouri, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and the USS Oklahoma memorial, you’ll need to take the (free) shuttle bus from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

This bus makes 3 stops only:

They depart from the Visitor Center every day, every 15 minutes or so from 8:00am to 5:00pm. I don’t know what happens if you miss the last shuttle back to the Visitor Center and you get trapped on the military base, so just don’t do it.

The ride from the Visitor Center to the Missouri takes about 10 minutes, from there to the Aviation Museum less than 5 minutes, and then about another 10 minutes to get back to the Visitor Center. But, waiting for the bus, waiting for everyone to get on and off the bus, etc. will still add considerable time to your itinerary. Plan accordingly if you have a reservation somewhere at a certain time.

If you don’t have military access and you want to visit either of those two museums, this is the only way you can get there . I repeat, you cannot drive yourself to Ford Island.

7. The Ford Island Bus Tour is a loophole for civilians.

If you don’t have military access but would still like to check out the Pearl Harbor sites on Ford Island, there’s still a way around that ! Enter: the Ford Island Bus Tour . (This is not the same thing as the free shuttle between the Visitor Center and Ford Island.)

I actually found out about this cool offer after I returned from my trip. It’s fairly new and, I guess, still not very well promoted.

The Ford Island Bus Tour is operated by the National Park Service and takes civilians (or really just anybody who wants to take it) over to the military access-only Ford Island sites. You’ll visit:

  • USS Oklahoma memorial
  • USS Utah memorial
  • Six historic officer bungalows

  • Hours : The tour is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:15pm – 5:00pm

8. Some Pearl Harbor sites are free; some are not.

If you skipped the section above that described each of the different Pearl Harbor sites, then you missed this very important information: Some of the Pearl Harbor sites are free, and some are not. This is because some are operated by the National Park Service while others are privately operated.

Free Pearl Harbor sites

When visiting Pearl Harbor, these are the sites that offer free admission:

  • USS Arizona memorial
  • Ford Island Bus Tour
  • USS Utah memorial – military access required if not on the bus tour
  • Pearl Harbor Historical Trail – military access required

The boat to the Arizona and the shuttle bus from the Visitor Center to the sites on Ford Island are free services. The USS Arizona documentary film and the museum at the Visitor Center are also free.

Keep in mind that while admission is free, you still have to pay the $1 fee to reserve your ticket and $7 per day for parking at the Visitor Center.

best time to visit hawaii pearl harbor

Pearl Harbor sites that you have to pay for

These are the sites that charge admission when visiting Pearl Harbor:

These paid sites don’t require reservations, but you’ll still have to pay the $7 parking fee at the Visitor Center. (If you have military access and can drive yourself to Ford Island, you can park at the Battleship Missouri and the Aviation Museum for free.) The virtual reality programs at the Visitor Center are paid experiences as well.

However, these paid sites do include some “free” things:

  • The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum provides a free audio guide.
  • Battleship Missouri admission includes a free 35-minute guided tour.
  • Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum includes a free audio tour.

9. Pearl Harbor tours are not what they seem

It makes sense that you might want to book a Pearl Harbor tour for your visit. But, you should know right now that Pearl Harbor tours are basically scams. They charge you incredible amounts of money to visit the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and the USS Arizona Memorial… that are already free!

I can really go on about this because it irks me so much, but instead, read this post about it: Don’t Book a Pearl Harbor Tour Until You Read This! (Buyer Beware!)

best time to visit hawaii pearl harbor

10. Want to save some money? Do this…

Depending on the size of your group, visiting Pearl Harbor can get really expensive really fast. But there are a few creative ways that can help you save a little bit of money. (And in a destination like Hawaii, every dollar counts!)

I cover all of this in my post on how much everything at Pearl Harbor costs and how you can save money. I’ll give you a brief rundown here, but that link has ALL the details (and even math formulas if you like that sort of thing). All my best Pearl Harbor money advice is in that post!

Buy a membership instead of a one-time ticket

Depending on the size of your group, you could actually save money if only one of you purchases a membership instead of a one-time admission . Both the Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum include discounts for guests or free guest passes that could end up saving you a lot. Get all the details and my entire price breakdown here.

best time to visit hawaii pearl harbor

Pass on the Passport

The Passport to Pearl Harbor you see advertised a lot does not save you money. It includes admission to the three paid museums, an audio tour, and a virtual reality “experience.” But the passport actually costs more than if you bought the three museum tickets individually.

The only bonus is the multimedia programs but, not only are they unnecessary, the reviews of them are terrible. It’s clearly just a way to get you to commit to all three museums. Get all the details and my entire price breakdown here.

Consider an Oahu GoCity pass instead

The Oahu GoCity pass is an all-inclusive sightseeing pass that covers all the most popular attractions and activities on the island of Oahu. It covers all three paid Pearl Harbor museums plus other stuff like luaus, snorkeling excursions, catamaran cruises, and more.

And this one actually saves you lots of money! (And if it somehow doesn’t, they will literally refund you the difference.) It’s a no-risk purchase, really. I get these sightseeing passes all the time and love them. Get all the details on the Oahu GoCity pass here .

11. You MUST make reservations for certain sites.

When planning to visit Pearl Harbor, it’s important to remember that certain Pearl Harbor sites require advance reservations . This mostly has to do with capacity limitations. (Small boat + big demand.)

The Pearl Harbor sites you need to make reservations for are:

  • The Top of the Tower tour at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (but not for the museum itself)

At all other Pearl Harbor sites you’re free to walk up and enter as you wish, no reservations required.

USS Arizona Memorial reservations

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial sees almost 2 million visitors a year , and almost all of them take the boat ride to the Arizona Memorial. Don’t forget to reserve your tickets as soon as you can. (You’ll need to create an account on Recreation.gov if you don’t already have one.) Make Arizona reservations here .

Reservations can be made up to 8 weeks (56 days) in advance, and they fill up fast. For last minute planners, they do release additional tickets every day at 3:00pm (HST) for the following day. For instance, tickets for Sunday, Nov 5 will be released on Saturday, Nov 4 at 3:00pm Hawaii time (9:00pm EST).

This is how I reserved my ticket in August, and they sold out for the next day within a few minutes. So, if this is your plan, be sure to be online at 3:00pm (HST) on the dot. Make your Recreation.gov account beforehand so you’ll be ready to go. There are no walk-up tickets or same-day releases.

Ford Island Bus Tour reservations

These tours max out at 25 people each, with just one tour a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Space is super limited here so be sure to make your reservation as soon as tickets are released if you have your heart set on this tour.

Reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance and you’ll need a Recreation.gov account to make one. On the reservation page, click on a tour date on the calendar and it’ll show you when tickets for that date will be released. Make bus tour reservations here .

Top of the Tower reservations

The new Top of the Tower tour at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (which I’ll talk more about in a minute) is not included in your general museum admission and does require a separate reservation. (Nor is admission to the museum included if you book a Tower tour.) However, you can save money by booking your Tower tour as an “add-on” when you pay for museum admission. Make Tower reservations here .

Reservations can be made anytime, for as far into the future as their online calendar will go. (I stopped looking after I reached a whole year in advance.) Space is limited—only 120 tickets per day—but I booked my tour just the day before and I had lots of spots to choose from. If there’s a certain time slot you want/need, make your reservation ASAP. Otherwise, this is one you don’t need to stress about.

12. The Top of the Tower tour is fantastic!

Now that you’re wondering what the Top of the Tower tour is , let me share this little secret. In 2022, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum opened the Ford Island Control Tower to visitors. This tower survived the Pearl Harbor attack and served a variety of purposes after the war. You can now book a spot on the museum’s Top of the Tower tour where you’ll get to see all of Pearl Harbor from an epic aerial view .

You’ll be able to go out on the exterior viewing platform and see all of Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, and the surrounding landscapes from up there. All the battleships and memorials, and then some.

Your guide will then detail the events of the Pearl Harbor attack in such a way that you can actually see (in your mind) the Japanese fighter planes zooming past you. You’ll get the best possible handle on exactly how it all played out, who came from where, and more. This is, by far, the best way to learn about the attack while visiting Pearl Harbor.

These tours are capped at 14 people total with 12 tour times throughout the day. (I chose the second to last tour of the day and I was the only one! My “private” tour was incredible.)

You must make reservations for this tour. It’s not included with admission to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, nor is museum admission included with a tour. You can book the tour on its own if that’s all you want to see, or as an “add-on” to your museum visit.

I loved my tour so much I wrote a whole post about it! Check out my post on why the Top of the Tower tour is so awesome plus all the important stuff you need to know about it.

Top of the Tower tour visitor information

  • Hours : Daily from 9:40am – 4:20pm
  • Admission : Just the Tower tour: $34.99 each for both adults and children / As an add-on: $19.99 + museum admission
  • Parking : $7 at the Visitor Center, then you must take the shuttle bus (or free on-site if you have military access)
  • How long to budget : Tours last about 40 minutes, but add another 1-2 hours if you want to visit the museum as well.

13. The boat to the USS Arizona can be canceled without warning.

The National Park Service/U.S. Navy boat is the only way you can visit the USS Arizona memorial. It’s a short ride and, most of the time, there aren’t any issues. However, it can be canceled at the last minute due to high winds.

There’s nothing you can do about this, obviously, and you can only predict it up to a point. But knowing that this is a possibility helps you manage your expectations . You probably won’t have any problems on your Arizona visit, but just know that high wind cancelations are possible.

(And maybe don’t leave this memorial a 1-star review if it does get canceled; they’re just trying to keep you alive and safe.)

14. Pearl Harbor has a No Bag policy.

While visiting Pearl Harbor you’ll have to comply with their No Bag policy. Basically, no purses, diaper bags, fanny packs, backpacks, etc. are allowed. However, there are a few exceptions:

  • This applies to bags that “offer concealment.” So, your clear bag should be good to go.
  • Smaller bags are allowed as long as they measure less than 1.5” x 2.25” x 5.5”. At the entrance there will be a guard with an example. Your bag has to be smaller than that. (See pictured)
  • Water bottles are allowed, even if they aren’t clear.

For my visit, I made sure to wear shorts with pockets and I kept my ID, credit card, and chapstick in the microfiber bag that came with my sunglasses. I also carried in my steel water bottle . Next time, I’ll bring a small clear purse though so I can bring my sunscreen along with me. ( Something like this , so I don’t have to keep going to my car to reapply.)

Bag storage at Pearl Harbor

Should you forget this rule, if they feel your bag is too big, and/or if you’re coming straight from the airport, Pearl Harbor does offer bag storage (even luggage). This is located at the Visitor Center and costs $7 per bag (smaller) and $10 per larger bag/luggage.

15. Know where to eat at Pearl Harbor.

The Pearl Harbor museums and memorials are somewhat spread out and not in that convenient of a location in the first place. But even though you’re pretty out of the way as far as the rest of Honolulu is concerned, you’ll still need to eat while visiting Pearl Harbor.

However, there are a handful of restaurants, cafes, and concession stands available to you in and around the historic sites. Knowing where these are can help you plan out your day at the sites which can also save you lots of time and money.

Check out my post here on Where to Eat Near Pearl Harbor which has all the details : the full list of places to eat, where to find them, links to their menus, some helpful food and drink tips, and more.

16. Get a head start with these books.

Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor is so much more than what it appears to be on the surface. In fact, I actually find this to be one of the most nuanced and interesting historical events once you dig into it. Get a head start on all the stuff you’re going to learn in Hawaii by reading a book or two on the events of December 7, 1941.

I’ve put together a list of some of the best books on Pearl Harbor that has something for every kind of audience (in that link). It includes memoirs, historical fiction, children’s books, books that explain the details of the attack, and those that examine all the stuff that led up to it.

I’ve included my personal favorites (as a recent graduate with a master’s degree in World War II Studies) and even a little bit of commentary.

17. Most of Pearl Harbor is fully exposed.

The fact that most of the Pearl Harbor sites you’re going to visit are fully exposed is one of the key things to know when visiting Pearl Harbor. I mean it–this is CRITICAL.

While the museums are indoors, most of the stuff you’ll want to see is outdoors… in the scorching Pacific sun and heat. My advice: prepare for this like your life depends on it. I did see someone at the Visitor Center (probably in her 20s) being carted off by paramedics after suffering heat stroke.

When visiting Pearl Harbor, definitely plan to:

  • Wear high-SPF sunscreen and reapply as often as you can. (And make sure it’s reef-safe as per Hawaii regulations. I use Badger sunscreens .) And don’t forget your ears, the back of your neck, the tops of your feet, and any exposed parts of your scalp.
  • Wear a sun hat , or baseball cap, or even one of these . (Everyone will be jealous.)
  • Bring an umbrella for sun protection if you don’t want to wear a hat.
  • Bring a small portable fan to stay as cool as possible.
  • Cover your body – Wear long pants and long sleeves in light materials and colors.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and prevent headaches from squinting all day. Polarized is the way to go.
  • Drink tons and tons of water all day long. Bring your own refillable water bottle and fill up at the water fountains at all the sites. You can even go the extra mile (like I do) and add some Liquid IV to it for some electrolyte replenishment.
  • Rest when you need to. Don’t overexert yourself; there are plenty of ways to escape the sun. The indoor museums (Bowfin, Aviation) are air conditioned. The shuttle bus is air conditioned. You can find shade everywhere.

18. Wear good solid shoes.

I know this is Hawaii and all, but flip-flops are not ideal while visiting Pearl Harbor . Besides doing a ton of walking, you’ll also be climbing up and down steps on battleships, submarines, and buses; and walking around on boats and gangplanks (possibly wet ones).

I wore my Teva sandals with all-around straps. (Similar brands like Chacos and Keens are great options too! All three of these brands are also available on Amazon .) Most other visitors wore something similar or just went with comfortable sneakers.

19. Bring tissues.

Make sure to save enough room in your tiny little bag for some tissues while visiting Pearl Harbor. Obviously , you’ll feel all the emotions here given its tragic history. But really, nothing can prepare you for the 23-minute film on the USS Arizona or even the 5-minute explanation from the park rangers before you board the boat to the memorial. Seriously, within 5 minutes of us sitting down the whole room was wiping their faces on their shirts.

20. The Pearl Harbor gift shop is weird.

You’re not wrong, the Pearl Harbor gift shop is… weird. First of all is the fact that a place like this even has a gift shop. “Here’s the gift I got you, from that place where 2,403 people were killed.” But it’s the items in the shop that will really make you think.

I visit WWII sites all over the world and many of them do have some sort of “gift shop.” Though, they’re most often referred to as “book” shops and sell mostly books on related topics. T-shirts are standard at most places too.

But the Pearl Harbor gift shop also sells things like toys, cartoon-ish stickers of the memorial and ship anchor, and—brace yourself—an entire line of Hello Kitty/Pearl Harbor merchandise . Is it weird to see a Japanese icon dressed as Rosie the Riveter , symbol of American WWII home front efforts? Yes. Or how about a Japanese icon dressed as a U.S. Navy sailor? YES! They have their rationale behind this, but I can’t help but feel icky when I see it.

It’s also worth noting that the Pearl Harbor gift shop is not part of the National Park Service site. Instead, the gift shop is operated by an independent organization known as Pacific Historic Parks. However, this is still a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps fund educational programs at the park. So at least there’s that.

21. Visit the U.S. Army Museum before visiting Pearl Harbor.

The museum at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is fine for learning about the events of the Pearl Harbor attack. But… the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is much better ! I highly recommend going here first.

In my opinion, this museum does a much better/clearer job of presenting the facts surrounding the Pearl Harbor attack including the lead-up to it/why Japan attacked and what happened afterwards/as a result. There are also more physical artifacts here, while the Visitor Center museum is mostly informational panels and photos.

The real drawback to the Visitor Center museum is that it just gets so crowded (and hot). This makes it hard to see/read much of the information, and there’s no real flow so it’s easy to get out of order and confused. It’s not an ideal learning environment at all.

best time to visit hawaii pearl harbor

The U.S. Army Museum, on the other hand, is going to be mostly empty when you go so you can take your time reading all the info and looking at all the artifacts. Plus, it’s dark and air conditioned. There won’t be sweaty people bumping into you.

The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is free to visit and located in Honolulu , just minutes from Waikiki. There’s a parking lot directly across the street and they validate parking. If you’re looking to actually learn more about the Pearl Harbor attack and see some cool artifacts, visit this museum first!

U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii visitor information

  • Hours : Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00am – 5:00pm
  • Closed : Sundays, Mondays, federal holidays, and the Tuesdays following federal holidays if they fall on a Monday
  • Parking : Parking is across the street at the Hale Koa Saratoga lot. The museum validates parking so remember to take your ticket with you. After validation, parking will cost $4 for the first hour and $3 for each additional hour.
  • How long to budget : I concentrated on just the WWII stuff and I was back in my car in time to pay just $4. But if you want to explore the whole thing/all of Hawaii’s military history, budget for 1.5-2 hours.

22. Make sure your kids are ready for Pearl Harbor

When considering whether to visit Pearl Harbor with kids, there’s much to think about. I discuss this in depth in my post on visiting WWII sites with kids and I highly recommend you read that first.

The Pearl Harbor sites welcome children of all ages. There are even programs for children here like the National Park Service Junior Ranger program. They can even get their National Park Passports stamped at all the sites. (Who am I kidding, I totally have one of these!)

There are two main things to consider here:

  • How well do you think your child(ren) can handle the material?
  • Can your child(ren) behave appropriately in such a serious memorial space?

Thankfully, I haven’t seen any rambunctious children running amok here the way I have at many other WWII sites , but it’s still a very important thing to consider before visiting Pearl Harbor.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Pearl Harbor

Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions about visiting Pearl Harbor:

Does Pearl Harbor have a dress code?

No, there’s no official dress code for visiting Pearl Harbor. However, it’s important to remember this is a place of tragedy and you’ll be visiting both memorials and graveyards.

Dress respectfully. Don’t wear anything offensive or inappropriate. If you’re unsure if what you plan to wear is offensive or inappropriate, then just don’t.

Can you just how up to Pearl Harbor?

Yes and no. You will need advance reservations for:

  • Top of the Tower tour at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

You do not need reservations for / You are free to just show up to:

  • USS Utah memorial and Ford Island Historic Trail (if you have military access)

How much time do you need to see Pearl Harbor?

Pearl Harbor is not just one thing; it’s actually a collection of many individual sites. How long it takes to see Pearl Harbor is going to be different for everyone. You can “see Pearl Harbor” in a half day, or over two full days, depending on your preferences.

For just visiting the Visitor Center and the USS Arizona memorial (the two most popular sites), it will take around 3 hours. If you also plan to visit the Battleship Missouri, add another 2 hours. (And so on.)

Where do you park for visiting Pearl Harbor?

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center has a couple of large parking lots. You’ll park here to visit almost all of the Pearl Harbor sites, even the ones on Ford Island (that you’ll take a shuttle bus to from here). Put “Pearl Harbor National Memorial” or “1 Arizona Memorial Place” into your GPS, otherwise you might end up on the military base.

Parking is $7/day and you have to pay it online when you arrive. There will be signs posted around the parking lots with instructions on how to pay with your phone. (Yes, it’s annoying.)

Where to stay for visiting Pearl Harbor

This island of Oahu does not lack in fantastic places to stay, the most popular of which is going to be Waikiki. (There aren’t a lot of hotel options near Pearl Harbor, and definitely not any decent ones.) Here are some great Waikiki options for your trip:

  • Sheraton Waikiki – My personal favorite place to stay in Waikiki. Gorgeous views, great amenities, walking distance to everywhere in Waikiki.
  • Wayfinder Waikiki – A hidden gem outside the main Waikiki tourist area.
  • Prince Waikiki – On the marina, gorgeous property with great views, lots of dining options.

10 Essential Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Honolulu, Hawaii

This article may contain affiliate/compensated links. For full information, please see our disclaimer  here .

Table of Contents

On December 7th of the year 1941, the naval base Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii would never be the same again. That day, which “is a day that will live in infamy” Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese Navy Air Service early in the morning.

The Pearl Harbor attack killed over 2,400 people, injured 1,000 (including civilians), and destroyed over 20 American Navy vessels located on the base. These vessels had 8 battleships and over 300 airplanes on them. After the gruesome event at Pearl Harbor, war was declared on Japan.

Because of the significance of the attack, Pearl Harbor is a highly visited site for tourists and locals alike in Honolulu. Let’s review a little bit more about Pearl Harbor for context then dive into the 10 essential tips for visiting Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii.

zoomed out photo of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

About Pearl Harbor: an Overview

Pearl Harbor is located basically in the center of the Pacific Ocean. It’s approximately 2,000 miles from mainland United States (lower 48 contiguous) and about 4,000 miles from Japan.

The base at Pearl Harbor, when attacked was relatively undefended as no one believed that the Japanese would attack here. The Japanese attack plan was simple, to destroy the Pacific Fleet so the Americans couldn’t fight back.

Over the course of the two hour attack, the plan was successful. All battleships except the USS Arizona and USS Utah were salvaged and repaired from the attack. However, the United States was able to rebound quickly as all of the aircraft carriers were away from the base at the time of the attack and the onshore resources (oil storage, repair shops, shipyards, and submarine docks) were all intact.

December 8th, the day after the attack the United States Congress approved the declaration of war on Japan. Three days later, Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. Two years after the World War II conflict had begun, the United States entered the conflict. Pearl Harbor was significant as it was the catalyst for the involvement in the war.

Things to do at Pearl Harbor

Before visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial site, I will cover what to know in the subsequent tips I share to hopefully have you feel prepared prior to your visit.

Pearl Harbor is denoted as a National Historic Monument and is managed by the NPS (National Park Service).  Be sure to bring your National Park Passport to stamp it! Once you arrive at Pearl Harbor in the Aloha Court area you can receive more information there but it’s always better to be prepared!

There are many different Pearl Harbor attractions and things you can do while visiting Pearl Harbor so let’s review the many different things to help plan your Pearl Harbor Itinerary!

USS Arizona Memorial

To get to the memorial you will have to take a boat ride. The boats are operated by the United States Navy. If wind and wave conditions become unsafe, they have the authority to suspend, modify, or cancel regular operations.

Regular operations or the USS Arizona Memorial Program run at 45 minute intervals if you don’t make a reservation, but the time slots for reservations are at 15 minute intervals. Both include a boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, 15 minutes to spend in the memorial, and a boat ride back to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

If you book your time spot in advance, it is advised to show up an hour prior to your time slot. You can book these USS Arizona Memorial Tickets (or rather guaranteed time slot) online in advance.

Visiting the memorial, and the exhibit galleries explained below as well as the memorial theater show is free of charge. Donations are always accepted.

Review Exhibit Galleries

There are two exhibit galleries available, “Road to War” and “Attack”. These two immersive exhibits give visitors to Pearl Harbor a better idea of the sights, sounds, and specific events before the attack and then the aftermath. There is historic memorabilia, battle artifacts, and much more to experience.

A model of the USS Arizona Memorial compared to what the original ship looked like prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater

The memorial theater adds additional context to the exhibit galleries of the before and after events of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This is also a free attraction in addition to visiting the USS Arizona Memorial.

Wayside Exhibit

As you get off of the boat after visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, the wayside exhibit snakes around the waterfront area. There is signage and additional information on landmarks that are before you and their significance. This is aimed at connecting the past, and its events, with the present.

View of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor from the wayside exhibit on shore.

Remembrance Circle

Near the wayside exhibit but farther inland front the water is the remembrance circle monument. This is a monument recognizing and remembering those who were killed in the December 7, 1941 attacks at Pearl Harbor. There are men, women, and children’s names inscribed recognized as lives lost both military and civilian at Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Historic Sites

Additional Pearl Harbor Historic Sites are NOT managed by the NPS (National Park Service.) These include the Battleship USS Missouri Memorial (USS bowfin submarine), the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, Pearl Harbor Pacific Aviation Museum, and the USS Oklahoma Memorial which is located on  Ford Island. Another additional charge is for an audio tour.

All of these have additional costs but are perfect for WWII history buffs or those interested in the United States military.

Bookstore & Shop

On your way out, check out the bookstore and shop for something to bring home with you to remember your visit. There are many different things to choose from. However, they do not have a specific sticker for your National Parks Passport. (I looked!) This is near the entry and exit to the other items listed above.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Get there early

With a few exceptions, (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day) Pearl Harbor is open to visit all other days of the year from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Getting there early as close to opening time as possible (especially in high tourist season) will result in the best visit with the least amount of people. We arrived around 8:30 AM in late September and it was already getting very busy.

Keep in mind that tour buses and groups also come closer to mid day and afternoon.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Book in Advance?

You aren’t required to book in advance. But keep in mind that Pearl Harbor is one of the top three visited locations on the island of Oahu. However, especially during times of peak traffic, the National Park Service recommends it.

There isn’t really a time of year that’s “slow” at Pearl Habor, but booking in advance is essential if you plan to visit during the summer, winter holidays, and spring break.

During times of high traffic, standby and on-demand availability could be limited or not available at all.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Transportation & Parking

Parking in the lot is a $7 fee. You can pay it at the kiosk in the Aloha Court area upon entering.

However, you can easily navigate to Pearl Harbor using public transportation. There is a bus stop right out front. Here’s a Pearl Harbor Map to acquaint yourself with where everything is for planning.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Be Bag Conscious

Bags are not allowed inside. It’s best to leave it safely concealed and out of sight in your vehicle or leave it at home. If you don’t feel comfortable doing either of those options, there is a bag storage option near the parking lot that you can use for a fee.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Tickets and tours

Depending on when you plan to visit, booking a time slot for the USS Arizona Memorial is a great idea! You don’t have to visit with a tour, but if you’re in Honolulu without a car a tour is a great way to explore and visit Pearl Harbor, have reliable transportation, and possibly explore other attractions on Oahu beyond Pearl Harbor. Check out some of the best tours to explore Oahu without a car !

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Know Your Plan

Ensure you have a rough idea of everything you want to see while visiting Pearl Harbor. Ensure you have plenty of time to see them. And secure any admissions and timeslots in advance to be certain you’re able to see them.

Most visitors want to see the USS Arizona Memorial and experience the free exhibits, Remembrance Monument, and the Wayside exhibit. This will take roughly three hours, but anything additional adds on more time.

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Sun Protection

Hawaii is a sunny and warm destination year round. No matter what time of year you visit, be sure you bring a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen as well as bring additional sunscreen with you.

Pearl Harbor has a lot of direct sunlight, not much shade, plus is near water so the intensity of sun exposure is higher. Plan accordingly!

Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor: Be Respectful!

Pearl Harbor is still an active military base.

Listen, learn, observe, be thoughtful and quiet. Especially when visiting the USS Arizona Memorial as it’s a site where many brave Americans lost their lives.

Pearl Harbor aims to ensure the dignity and respect of those Americans whose lives were lost as well as their families who have lost loved ones here. Please keep this in mind when visiting!

Pearl Harbor’s location is on the Hawaiian island of Oahu near the Honolulu International Airport west of downtown Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach area. It is about a 45 minute drive from Waikiki area hotels. The address for the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is 1 Arizona Memorial Place; Honolulu, Hawaii 96818.

What is the best day of the week to visit Pearl Harbor?

During the week and offseason, it’s generally quieter to visit Pearl Harbor. I would avoid weekends if you can. Summer, winter break, and spring break are typically the busiest times regardless of the day of the week. Outside of those time periods, early to mid week Monday-Wednesday are on average less busy.

Can you visit Pearl Harbor without a tour?

Yes, you can visit Pearl Harbor independently. However, for many people booking a tour from their accommodation to Pearl Harbor and back is the most convenient option for them. You will also receive additional context from a local guide’s perspective. Check out some of my recommended tours if you don’t have a car for your time on Oahu.

Can I bring a water bottle to Pearl Harbor?

Yes! It is recommended to bring your own water bottle. There are facilities where you can fill it up. Help to create a sustainable earth by using reusable water bottles whenever possible! Pearl Harbor can be warm since it isn’t well-shaded, so you will definitely need water during your visit.

How much time do you need at Pearl Harbor?

At least three hours. Three hours will allow you the time to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, see the exhibits, view the memorial video, and take a walk around the grounds to see the wayside exhibit and Remembrance Circle. If you choose to do any additional tours or experiences, add more time.

Do you need a tour to visit Pearl Harbor?

No. You can visit Pearl Harbor on your own. However, for many people booking a tour from their accommodation to Pearl Harbor and back is the most convenient option for them. Check out some of my recommended tours if you don’t have a car for your time on Oahu. You can also get to Pearl Harbor using public transportation.

Do you need tickets to visit Pearl Harbor?

Yes and No. You do not need to purchase tickets in advance. However, if you’re visiting during summer (June-August) it’s best to secure them in advance. There is a processing fee for the timeslot for the USS Arizona Memorial, but the experience is otherwise free. Especially if you’re visiting at peak times this will ensure your spot in line.

View out up above the USS Arizona Memorial with the sun shining down over the raised United States flag

What to wear to a Pearl Harbor tour?

There is no official dress code, but it is a memorial so dress with respect. Do not wear swimwear flip flops. It’s also in a lot of direct sunlight so ensuring you’re covered for sun exposure is important as well. It’s not strict where you will be denied admission but just be mindful of your clothing decisions.

Do you need reservations to see Pearl Harbor?

Not always. During peak travel periods (summer, winter vacations, and spring break) they are highly advised so you won’t spend the majority of your time waiting in line. It’s also not guaranteed that there will be standby availability. It’s best to make a reservation to ensure you’re able to experience it.

During these times, the weather is great, and there aren’t too many tourists.

If you want to avoid big crowds, it’s a good idea to visit on weekdays, especially Tuesday through Thursday. Mornings, right after opening, are usually the quietest.

Now, how long should you stay?

To see everything and really understand the history, it’s best to set aside a whole day . There’s a lot to explore and learn.

By spending the day, you can take your time at each site and get the most out of your visit.

How to Reserve Tickets for Pearl Harbor

Are you wondering how to get tickets for Pearl Harbor? Don’t worry; it’s pretty easy!

There are two main ways to grab them. First, you can buy them online before you go. This is super handy because you can plan ahead and make sure you get the tickets you want.

Or, if you’re more of a last-minute planner, you can grab it right there at Pearl Harbor when you arrive.

Now, let’s talk about the cost. Prices can vary depending on what you want to see.

USS Arizona From a Helicopter

There are different attractions like the USS Arizona Memorial , USS Missouri Battleship , the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum , and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum . Each has its own ticket price.

Tickets for the USS Arizona Memorial are FREE if you get them in person. However, they have a limited amount and they usually get snapped up quickly.

However, you can pay $1 and reserve them online .

Ford Island Bus Tour

Want to see the USS Oklahoma and USS Utah Memorials on Ford Island? If you don’t have a Military ID, you’ll need to get a spot on the Ford Island Bus Tour.

Why? Ford Island is a working military base, so we need to make sure visitors are guided safely.

This tour is led by park rangers who know lots about Pearl Harbor. They team up with the US Navy to make sure everything goes smoothly.

So, what’s in it for you? A cool bus ride from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to Ford Island. There, you’ll get to see some special spots that not everyone visits.

The whole trip takes about 90 minutes and is full of neat stories and sights. It’s like getting a VIP pass to some hidden treasures at Pearl Harbor! Make reservations HERE .

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center: Your Starting Point!

Before you dive into the history of Pearl Harbor, there’s one place you should definitely start: the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center . Think of it like the front door to all the amazing stuff you’re about to explore!

So, what’s at the Visitor Center? A lot!

First, there are cool exhibits. They have pictures, artifacts, and stories that give you a sneak peek of Pearl Harbor’s past. It’s like a mini-museum that sets the stage for everything else you’ll see.

Information Desk

Then there’s a super helpful information desk. If you’ve got questions (like where to go first or how to find a restroom), the friendly folks here have answers. They’re like your personal tour guides, ready to help!

Want to grab a souvenir or maybe a book? The gift shop has loads of neat things you can take home. There’s everything from t-shirts to model ships, so you can remember your visit long after you leave.

But the best part of the Visitor Center? The feeling. It’s a place that welcomes you, teaches you, and gets you excited for your Pearl Harbor adventure.

It’s also a spot to relax, grab a snack, or sit on a bench and soak in the views of the harbor.

Tip: Don’t rush through the Visitor Center! Spend some time here. Check out the exhibits, chat with the staff, and maybe even watch a short film they show. It’s the perfect way to kick off your Pearl Harbor experience!

Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is home to many historical sites, but the USS Arizona Memorial stands out as one of the most touching.

It’s not just a place on a map; it’s a place that tells a deep story of bravery, loss, and remembrance.

The USS Arizona Memorial is the most well-known spot at Pearl Harbor.

It’s built directly over the final resting place of the USS Arizona ship, which was tragically sunk during the 1941 attack.

The sailors and marines on board that day are still within the ship, making this memorial incredibly significant.

Image of USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor Aerial Shot

Now, to get to the memorial, you’ll hop on a boat ride. As the boat gently moves across the harbor, you might feel a mix of excitement and reflection.

The water around you holds so much history, and soon, you’ll be floating right above a part of it.

As you approach, you’ll notice a stunning white structure that seems to float gracefully on the water. That’s the USS Arizona Memorial.

Once inside, it’s almost like the world goes quiet. The atmosphere is calm, peaceful, and you can sense the reverence of the place.

You might feel a lump in your throat or even shed a tear thinking about the events of that fateful day and the brave souls who were there.

Tip: When you’re on the memorial, try to find a quiet spot and just listen. Often, there’ll be a guide or park ranger sharing stories about the ship, the attack, and the people involved. These tales can bring history to life, making your visit even more impactful.

In the end, the USS Arizona Memorial is more than just a tourist spot; it’s a place of reflection and honor.

When you visit, take a moment to pay respects, think about the stories, and appreciate the sacrifices made for freedom.

Other Must-See Monuments and Attractions

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial has a lot more to offer in addition to the USS Arizona Memorial.

There’s the USS Battleship Missouri, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (formerly the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum).

USS Battleship Missouri

This huge ship has a big history! It’s where World War II officially ended. You can take a tour, walk the decks, and see where the surrender documents were signed.

We usually like to take a photo on the deck in front of the giant cannons because it really puts things in perspective!

USS Battleship Missouri Cannons

One of the most fascinating exhibits inside the USS Battleship Missouri is Divine Wind: Kamikaze and the Battle for the Pacific .

It’s a huge display of letters written by Japanese kamikaze pilots before they did their mission at Pearl Harbor and it’s a perspective that we don’t normally hear about when learning about WWII.

Tip: Wear comfy shoes because there’s a lot to explore on this massive ship!

There’s also a place to get grab-and-go food if you need to refuel. We always stop here to get fresh Dole Whip. It’s the perfect way to cool down after walking around the USS Battleship Missouri in direct sunlight.

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

If you love planes, this is your spot. The museum has old warplanes and tells stories about the pilots who flew them. There are hands-on exhibits and even a flight simulator!

Outside of the main museum area, there’s a cool stand-alone exhibit about Bob Hope. There’s also a separate hangar where you can see the actual bullet holes from the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tip: Ask questions. The staff here know a ton and can share some awesome facts!

There’s also a sit-down restaurant inside the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum that has fun, retro paintings on the wall. And the food is classic American stuff like burgers and fries.

Image of the Ford Island Control Tower at Pearl Harbor

One of the newest things to do at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is climb up the Ford Island Control Tower. You’ll take an elevator up a few floors and then climb up the spiral staircase to the observation deck.

The views from the top are really cool!

Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum (formerly the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum)

Have you ever daydreamed about being on a real submarine? Dive into history at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum!

This isn’t just any submarine – it’s a window to World War II.

Climbing inside, you’ll see exactly how sailors lived and worked during those intense times. It’s like hopping in a time machine!

USS Bowfin Submarine at Pearl Harbor

Walking through the narrow hallways and tiny rooms, you’ll be amazed at how sailors managed in such close quarters.

But a quick heads-up: Watch your head! Submarines weren’t built for tall folks, so there are low ceilings and tight spots.

While exploring cool spots like the Bowfin is super fun, remember this isn’t just about the ‘wow’ factor. It’s about the stories of bravery and sacrifice from years ago.

So, as you wander through, take a moment to think about the heroes who once stood where you stand.

What to Wear to Pearl Harbor

It’s really important to remember that many people lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and it’s a place to pay your respects to the fallen soldiers.

This means you should skip the flip-flops and beach attire and wear something a bit more respectful. My husband usually wears an Aloha shirt and I usually wear a long dress or lightweight pants.

Military Visitors

Military visitors to the memorial are within the bounds of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and military regulations relating to military dress are enforced by Navy personnel.

According to COMNAVREG Hawaii Instruction 1020.2N, military visitors in uniform are required to dress in Class B or better in order to gain access to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. However, military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting.

Logistics of Visiting Pearl Harbor

So you’re ready to dive into the history of Pearl Harbor? Great! But first, let’s figure out some of the practical stuff so your trip goes smoothly.

Getting to Pearl Harbor

Public transport.

If you’re staying in Honolulu, there’s a public bus that goes directly to Pearl Harbor. It’s affordable and convenient, but remember to check the schedule !

Driving yourself? It’s pretty easy to get to Pearl Harbor from Waikiki . There’s a big parking lot right outside the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, and guess what? It’s free! But try to come early to grab a good spot.

Do not take the “Hickam AFB / Pearl Harbor” exit. This will take you to the active military base, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, not to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

Many tour companies offer trips to Pearl Harbor. This can be a great choice because they handle all the driving, and often, the guide will share fun facts on the way! THIS is the tour that I recommend .

What You Can (and Can’t) Bring to Pearl Harbor

No big bags.

Bags bigger than 1.5″ X 2.25″ X 5.5″ aren’t allowed. This includes things like purses, backpacks, and camera bags. You are allowed to bring in clear bags like THIS ONE if you need to.

Bag Storage

Near the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center entrance, there’s a place to store your bags for a small fee. You can use this same storage for all the Pearl Harbor sites you visit.

Just remember, Pearl Harbor is very serious about safety, so all the rules are there to protect everyone. We always store our bags here.

Food & Drinks

You can bring food and non-alcoholic drinks to the area, but you’ll need to carry them in your hands if you won’t have a bag.

Inside the museums, theaters, and on certain ships and the USS Arizona Memorial, you can only have water.

And a quick tip? Please take all trash with you when you leave to help keep the place clean.

Medical Bags

If you have a health condition and need a special bag, you’ll need to tell security. They’ll check the bag to make sure it only has the medical stuff you need.

The final decision is up to the Park Security Rangers, so give yourself some extra time for this.

On-Site Stuff

Where to eat at pearl harbor.

Feeling hungry? There’s a snack shop near the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center with sandwiches, drinks, and more. You can enjoy your meal while looking out over the harbor.

Laniakea Café at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is a casual restaurant with a menu of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and island favorites. There is also a kids’ menu and a selection of sides and beverages.

There’s also a snack shop outside the USS Battleship Missouri with lunch items and Dole Whip.

There are also lots of places to eat near Pearl Harbor if you want more options.

Yep, there are clean bathrooms available for when nature calls. There are options near all the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites.

Accessibility

Pearl Harbor is wheelchair-friendly, and they’ve thought about visitors with other needs too. If you have special requirements, just ask a staff member for help.

Things to Remember

There are a few rules to keep the place respectful and safe. Big bags or backpacks aren’t allowed, so leave them in your car or at your hotel.

Also, remember this is a place of remembrance. It’s a good idea to keep things quiet and respectful.

Making the Most of Your Visit to Pearl Harbor

Ready to explore Pearl Harbor? Here’s how to make sure your visit is both fun and meaningful!

Guided vs. Self-Guided Tours

Guided pearl harbor tours.

With a guide, you get to hear stories and facts that you might miss on your own. The guide can answer questions and show you special spots. The downside? You have to stick to their schedule.

Self-Guided Tours

If you like to explore at your own pace, this might be for you. You can spend as much time as you want at each place. But remember, you’ll need to do some extra homework to know what you’re looking at.

Prep with Some Reading

Want to understand things better? It’s a great idea to read up before your visit. There are lots of books and websites about Pearl Harbor.

You’ll get to know the stories behind the places you’ll see, which makes everything more interesting.

Chat with Veterans or Docents

If you see any veterans (people who served in the military) or docents (trained guides) around, don’t be shy! Say hello and ask them questions.

They have personal stories and insights that can make your visit extra special. Imagine hearing about Pearl Harbor from someone who was actually there!

In the end, whether you go with a guide, read a bunch of books, or chat with veterans, the most important thing is to be curious.

Ask questions, imagine what it was like back then, and remember the stories of bravery and sacrifice. That’s how you make your Pearl Harbor visit truly unforgettable.

Why Visit Pearl Harbor

The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, brought the US into the Second World War.

At 7.48 a.m. local time on that Sunday, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service launched the surprise attack, with more than 350 aircraft.

There were eight US Navy battleships in the harbor at the time. All were damaged, and four were sunk.

A total of 2,403 Americans were killed in the attack, and 1,178 more were wounded. It was the most deadly event that ever occurred in Hawaii.

On the next day, December 8, the United States declared war on Japan.

Of the eight battleships that were damaged on that fateful day, six were returned to service and went on to fight in the war.

The USS Arizona and the USS Utah remain where they sank in Pearl Harbor.

Things to Do in Pearl Harbor

There are four main sites to visit in Pearl Harbor: the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.

In order to plan your visit to Pearl Harbor, you’ll first need to zoom in on the sites that interest you!

1. Visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is the main draw for most visitors.

This Pearl Harbor site is managed by the National Park Service and includes the USS Arizona Memorial, by far the most-visited site in Pearl Harbor.

Step Inside the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center

Start your visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial at the Visitor Center.

Here you can view two exhibit galleries: Road to War and Attack .

The galleries are fascinating and include photos, artifacts from the battle, personal items, and other exhibits that take you back to the time of the attack and the events before and after.

You’ll find interpretive exhibits scattered about the facility, and if you have the time, they bring to life the events of that fateful day in 1941.

Pearl Harbor Visitor Center Oahu

In the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater, you can watch a 23-minute documentary on the Pearl Harbor attack. Aside from the USS Arizona Memorial, the movie was at the top of our Pearl Harbor experience.

Pay Your Respects at the USS Arizona Memorial

The USS Arizona Memorial, with its graceful lines and pristine white facade, stands in the ocean, right over the spot where the battleship lies sunken in the water.

It was completed in 1962, and stands across the hull of the sunken battleship. The remains of the battleship are a National Historic Landmark.

Looking out from the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Oahu

Thousands of visitors take the boat ride to the memorial each day to spend a few minutes paying their respects to those that perished.

Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor is one of the best things to do in Oahu .

On the USS Arizona Memorial, the devastation that war wreaks feels very close, and the minutes of somber reflection here were incredibly moving for me.

There’s an opening in the floor, through which you can toss flowers onto the decks of the sunken ship. A marble wall bears the names of those that died in the attack, and a small plaque the names of the few that survived.

Oil still leaks from the ship, 80 years after it sank, and you can see it on the surface of the water.

The USS Arizona Memorial Program takes about 45 minutes, inclusive of check in.

You’ll ride a US Navy vessel to the memorial — the boat ride takes about 10 minutes — and you get 15 minutes at the memorial before taking the boat back to the visitor center.

Because the program is hugely popular, the USS Arizona Memorial Program requires advance reservation , which can be made online at Recreation.gov. There is a reservation fee of $1.00 per ticket.

Slots are released daily at 3 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time in two swathes: eight weeks in advance, and 24 hours in advance.

If a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial is high on your Oahu itinerary, we suggest reserving your desired time slot as soon as your date is open.

The program begins at 8 a.m. each morning, and runs every 15 minutes, with the last program at 3.30 p.m.

Note that the boat service to the USS Arizona Memorial can sometimes be suspended or canceled due to high winds.

Be sure to check in (with a printed or digital version of your reservation ticket) at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater at the visitor center, 10 minutes before your program start time. You do not want to miss the boat!

Good to know: Proper attire is expected, since you will be visiting a memorial site.

Take the Ford Island Bus Tour

Want to visit a couple of less visited sites at Pearl Harbor? Take the Ford Island bus tour (run by the park service) to see the USS Oklahoma and USS Utah Memorials!

The USS Oklahoma and the USS Utah were two of the eight battleships in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Both ships sank in the attack.

The USS Utah was never recovered and remains in the waters where it sank. 58 service members aboard the ship perished.

The USS Oklahoma capsized and sank after it was hit by a torpedo. 429 service members aboard the ship died. It was later brought up, but deemed unfit for further service and sold for scrap.

Today you can visit the USS Utah Memorial and the USS Oklahoma Memorial, both of which are on Ford Island, an active duty military base.

The USS Oklahoma Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Oahu

You can also see six historic officer bungalows from the WWII time.

Visitors without an active-duty military ID have to join a bus tour, with advance reservations made at Recreation.gov. The tour is escorted by National Park Service rangers, who provide commentary.

There is one bus tour on any given day, and it runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The program time is 3.15 p.m. to 5 p.m. and there are only 25 seats per bus tour.

Tickets are snapped up as soon as they become available, so make sure to reserve your spots as soon as your date opens up. Slots are released two weeks prior, and there is a reservation fee of $1.00 per ticket.

There is no fee for the Ford Island bus tour.

Commercial tour companies aren’t allowed, so the only way to do this tour is to reserve ahead and arrive independently at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, from where the tour departs.

Good to know: Bring ID, like a driver’s license or a passport — it’s required for check in. Also have a digital or printed copy of your reservation ticket available when you arrive for check-in, at 2.30 p.m.

2. Tour the Battleship Missouri Memorial

World War II ended on the Battleship Missouri, when General MacArthur accepted Japan’s formal surrender on “the surrender deck” on September 2, 1945.

The USS Missouri was commissioned in June 1944. In January 1945 it left for the Pacific Theater from Pearl Harbor, whereafter it participated in many attacks and battles in WWII.

In August 1945, it was decided that the USS Missouri would be the “surrender ship.” The ceremony, which lasted just 23 minutes, brought World War II to a formal end.

The USS Missouri went on to fight in the Korean War and the Gulf War before being decommissioned in 1992.

The last battleship ever built was then transported to Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii, where it became a floating museum, managed by the USS Missouri Memorial Association.

The USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, Oahu

Today you can visit the Battleship Missouri Memorial on your trip to Pearl Harbor. The Mighty Mo is one of the most popular sites in Pearl Harbor!

The Battleship Missouri Memorial is open daily from 8 a.m.to 4 p.m., with last entry at 3 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

After the guided tour you can continue to explore the ship on your own if you have the time and the interest.

You can buy tickets and tours online .

For aviation and WWII buffs, the museum makes for a great stop on a visit to Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Aviation Control Tower in Oahu, Hawaii

Exhibits in Hangar 37 are mainly focused on US involvement in the war, starting with the attack on Pearl Harbor to other events like the Battle of Midway from 1942 and beyond.

The museum’s collection includes several dozen restored historical aircraft, both from the American side and the Japanese side.

Hangar 37 also houses a couple of 360-degree flight simulators, and for an additional charge you can take the controls for a dogfight over the Pacific!

Hangar 79, which actually withstood the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, documents the history beyond WWII, and includes an aircraft restoration “shop.”

You can also browse the museum’s outdoor collection of helicopters, both historic and modern, and watch a film in the museum theater.

For a memorable experience, you can also ascend to the top of the Ford Island Control Tower, for views over the WWII aviation battlefield at Pearl Harbor.

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., other than on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

General admission at the time of writing is $25.99 for an adult and $14.99 for kids 4-12. You can buy tickets here .

4. Tour the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum is home to the USS Bowfin , a submarine from the World war II fleet.

The USS Bowfin went on multiple war patrols during WWII, and sank numerous ships, both large and small.

A view of the USS Bowfin in Pearl Harbor, with the Ford island Bridge behind. Oahu, Hawaii

The museum also offers many other outdoor exhibits, including the Waterfront Memorial, which honors the more than 3,500 personnel lost during WWII.

The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum is open daily from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., but closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

General admission at the time of writing is $21.99 per adult and $12.99 for children aged 4-12. You can buy tickets online .

Passport to Pearl Harbor Combined Ticket

If you plan to visit several of the Pearl Harbor sites in one day, you may want to consider the Passport to Pearl Harbor, a combined admission ticket.

The passport does not provide cost savings but it is convenient if you do not want to worry about purchasing individual tickets.

We got our admission tickets to the Battleship Missouri and the two museums in person on the day of our visit. This gave us flexibility in the event we had to change our plans for the day, and we did not encounter long lines anywhere.

The Passport to Pearl Harbor includes admission to the fee museums at Pearl Harbor: the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.

It also includes a one-hour self-guided narrated tour of the USS Arizona Memorial (but not the actual tickets, which have to be obtained at Recreation.gov), and admission to the USS Arizona Virtual Reality Center in the courtyard of the visitor center at Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

At the time of writing, the Passport to Pearl Harbor costs $89.99 for an adult and $44.99 for a child aged 4 to 12. There are discounts for military personnel and Hawaii residents: $67.99 per adult and $34.99 per child.

Where to Eat in Pearl Harbor

The small snack shop in the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center offers sandwiches and drinks.

Dining Options at Battleship Missouri Memorial

Among the Pearl Harbor sites, the Battleship Missouri Memorial offers the best food options.

Battleshop offers snacks and drinks, and ice cream for warm afternoons.

Sliders Grill, a truck on the pier just outside, offers a decent menu, with Hawaiian plate lunch options, sandwiches and burgers, family meals, and salads.

There is seating by the water, where you can lunch with views of the water and the USS Arizona Memorial.

Sliders Grill is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. everyday other than on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

Nearby is Wai Momi Shave Ice, which offers pizza and churros in addition to shave ice.

The stand is open 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday, other than on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

Food + Drink at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

Hangar Cafe is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the grill closes at 3 p.m.) and the menu features burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and rice bowls.

Food and Drink at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum

Jake’s Food Truck is open from 10 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. The menu includes Hawaiian plated lunches, tacos, nachos, burgers, and garlic fries.

How Long To Spend in Pearl Harbor

If you have just half a day to spend in Pearl Harbor, you should be able to visit the most iconic sites.

Tour the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and watch the film, take the boat tour to the USS Arizona Memorial (with prior reservation) and tour the Battleship Missouri Memorial. This will take you about 4 hours, exclusive of travel time.

We suggest choosing a morning option for the USS Arizona Memorial. This will free you up to decide which other sites to visit.

Plus, the wind usually kicks up in the afternoon, making it more likely that the boat tours will be suspended or canceled.

If you have a full day to spend in Pearl Harbor, you can do the above, plus do the Ford Island Bus Tour or visit the aviation museum and/or the submarine museum, depending on your interests.

Here Are The Main Attractions To Visit At Pearl Harbor

The Arizona Memorial, which honors the 1,177 people who lost their souls when the ship was bombed and sank, is the main attraction at Pearl Harbor. Here, people will learn about what happened through various presentations.

  • What to see: At the Arizona Memorial, visitors will watch a 25-minute movie detailing the increased tensions between the United States and Japan and the buildup of America’s involvement in World War II. After the movie ends, people will ride a boat to the Arizona Memorial. The latter consists of a stationary platform built over the sunken remains of the U.S.S. Arizona. People will spend between 15 and 20 minutes at this spot.
  • Cost: People visiting the Arizona Memorial can get free tickets to the movie and the boat ride. However, they have to make reservations before visiting. Those can be made online.
  • Operating times: Tours for the movie and boat ride at Arizona Memorial are offered every 15 minutes from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. People who have made a reservation online must come to the National Park Service ticket counter at the Visitor Center one hour before their tour’s time to pick up their tickets.

The U.S.S. Missouri is another essential attraction to see at Pearl Harbor. Battleship Missouri can be found on nearby Ford Island. This is where World War II ended in September 1945, when Japan surrendered on the deck of this historic ship. Naval admirers and history lovers will be stunned by visiting the U.S.S. Missouri and exploring the remains of the 900-ft ship.

  • Cost: People wishing to visit the U.S.S. Missouri will have to purchase tickets to explore this attraction. Prices start at 29.99$. People who want a guided tour will have to pay an extra 25$. These tickets can be purchased at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center or online.
  • Information: People visiting Battleship Missouri in Ford Island must know that it’s an active military base where private vehicles are not allowed. As a result, a bus provides transportation for visitors from the Visitor Center to Ford Island and the Missouri. People will not have to pay for the bus ride because the price is included in the ticket.

Other attractions that people enjoy visiting in Pearl Harbor include the U.S.S. Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and the U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial.

As Hawaii sits in the tropics, the weather is always great for the beach and a swim. But there is a best time to visit Hawaii due to the crowds, the wet season, and the high costs.

The best time to visit Hawaii is during the shoulder season months: April, May, September, October, and November (before Thanksgiving). The best month to visit Hawaii is September. During these periods you will find good weather, fewer crowds, and the best prices.

After living on Oahu and Maui, we used data and our own experience to determine the best time to visit Hawaii. While the data can tell you the cheapest time to visit, the atmosphere on the islands requires one to be there for the experience.

Even with the best time to visit Hawaii, we are still adamant that you should come over whenever you can get away from school and work. With flexibility comes rewards so below you will find all the details on why there is a best time to visit Hawaii.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii Data

To determine the best time to visit Hawaii we looked at the data. We call our analysis the three Cs: Clouds, Crowds, and Costs. The three criteria overlap to determine the best time to visit Hawaii.

We collected data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority Research , Weather Channel , and NOAA to determine the best time to visit Hawaii.

The data doesn’t tell the whole story. While December is a rainy month and expensive, we still recommend planning a Hawaii Christmas vacation . We share the worst times to visit Hawaii but with things to consider!

The Best Month to Visit Hawaii

September is the best month to visit Hawaii . October is a close second for the best time to visit Hawaii.

In September, you will find the best weather, the fewest people on the islands, the best prices for lodging, and the best ocean conditions for swimming and snorkeling. Plus, the vibe is more laid back after the summer busy season. For all those reasons, it is the best time to visit Hawaii.

October is also a great month to visit but we have found the ocean conditions are not as favorable for snorkeling, swimming, and boat trips. October can experience large swells making ocean conditions dangerous, compared to September. This isn’t every day, but a higher probability of occurring compared to September.

When you choose to visit Hawaii, make sure you know what to pack for the time of year. See our Hawaii packing list !

Let’s dive into the details as there is a lot more to know about the best time to visit Hawaii.

The Best Months to Visit Hawaii

While September is our favorite month to visit, we really think that any of the shoulder months are excellent for visiting. These months are:

  • April : after any spring break crowds have left
  • May : before Memorial Day
  • September : after Labor day
  • October : pretty much anytime!
  • November : earlier in the month before the Thanksgiving rush arrives

When is the Best Time to Visit Hawaii?

We’ve already established that overall, the best times to visit Hawaii are the shoulder seasons of September through November (before Thanksgiving) and April/May . But what if you’re looking for the best time to visit Hawaii based on specific criteria? We have you covered.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for the Weather

Hawaii has two seasons compared to four on the mainland of the USA. For most of Hawaii, there is summer between May and October and winter between November and April.

Hawaii is in the tropics, where the length of day and temperature are relatively uniform throughout the year.

While we did say that the temperatures are warm year-round, Hawaii does still get rain. And while you are heading to a beach destination, you probably want to minimize your chances of rain.

The Best time to visit Hawaii even if it rains

As you can see from the chart below, Hawaii experiences peak rain from November through March. Though to be fair, rain varies on different sides of each island — we are showing average rainfall for one popular visitor destination on each island.

If you do get stuck in the rain in Hawaii, see our What To Do in Hawaii When It Rains for a list of rainy day activities.

Therefore, to avoid the rain and cloudy days the best time to skip Hawaii’s rainy season visit Hawaii is during Hawaii’s summer or dry season.

The rains are warm in Hawaii and don’t last long. It may rain in the morning and then clear up for a beach day. All-day rains are rare, even during the winter. Plus, rain brings rainbows! We think you should still keep Hawaii in November in the running if you’re still not sure.

best time to visit hawaii weather rainfall graph

The popular places to stay on each of the major Hawaiian Islands are located on the leeward sides. The leeward side of the island gets less rain and has more sunny days compared to the windward side. The leeward side gets most of its rain during a few winter storms.

The coldest temperatures in Hawaii are from January through March where the average low temperature is the high 60s to low 70s.

The summers can get too hot for some, especially along the ocean on the leeward sides of the islands. Lahaina translates to “cruel sun” in Hawaiian due to the hot and dry weather. But, it is rare to get temperatures in the 90s even during the summer.

best time to visit Hawaii temperature highs graph

If you’re looking for warm temperatures but not too hot, the shoulder seasons are the best time to visit Hawaii. We prefer September for the best weather in Hawaii as the hot days are waning and the rainy season hasn’t started yet. September is the end of Hawaii’s summer.

Kauai is a little more complicated when it comes to weather. See Erica’s article on the best time to visit Kauai if you’re planning a Napali Coast Cruise or other activities.

Hurricanes causing destruction in Hawaii are rare. The last three hurricanes that caused damage on Hawaii are Hurricane Lane (2018), Hurricane Iniki (1992), and Hurricane Iwa (1982). The majority of the  damage from Hurricane Inkiki was on Kauai.

Even if a hurricane doesn’t cause destruction or harsh weather (many of them veer off the path of Hawaii), it can still be disruptive to your vacation. When you get a hurricane warning while on your trip, you can expect to have things disrupted for a few days until the threat passes. For example, if you have a boat trip planned, it will likely be canceled as they wait for storm warnings to pass.

The Best Time to Go Swimming in Hawaii

The ocean temperature around Hawaii varies from 71 degrees in the winter to 80 degrees during the summer. You can go swimming year-round in Hawaii without a wet suite.

ocean temperature data hawaii best time to visit

While the ocean stays warm year-round in Hawaii, the ocean conditions change a lot from the summer to the winter. The best time to go swimming in Hawaii is in the summer as you will have a higher probability of calm conditions on the north and south shores of the islands.

Large waves and strong currents are caused by storms thousands of miles away in the Pacific.

During the winter, storms from Alaska create large waves (and big wave surfing) on the north shores of the Hawaiian Islands. Storms from the southern hemisphere are blocked by other islands but you can still experience large swells during the summer on south shores of the Hawaiian Islands.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for The Fewest Crowds

If you’re worried about the islands being to busy during your vacation, pick a month when the daily visitor census is low.

January, February, September, and October have the fewest people on the Hawaiian Islands. To avoid the crowds, these months are the best time to visit Hawaii.

September and October are the least crowded as visitor counts drop to the islands after Labor Day.

While the pandemic and fires have caused visitor counts to vary dramatically from previous years, the trends in the ebb and flow of visitors remained the same. September and October consistently bring the least number of people to Hawaii. When we lived on Maui, those months were a nice break from the summer crowds.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for the Cheapest Costs

Lodging will be your biggest expense when you visit Hawaii. Hotel and vacation rental rates vary by supply and demand. Hence, the busy periods of the summer and winter experience a surge in average daily rates.

The lowest hotel rates were in September in 2019. From 2021-2023, hotel rates also experienced a dip compared to the summer and winter months. FYI, Oahu is the cheapest Hawaiian Island to visit thanks to hotel prices.

Vacation rental daily rates are also low in the fall. The lowest rates for vacation rentals are found in September, October, and early November (prior to Thanksgiving). October had the lowest vacation rental rates in 2019 and 2021-2023.

Car rental rates track with lodging rates as they base the price on the amount of demand. Hence, you will find the lowest car rental rates in September and October.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for Whale Watching

If you’re hoping to get a glimpse of the majestic humpback whales that migrate to Hawaii each year, plan your trip sometime between December and the end of March . While you can start spotting whales as early as October or as late as May, the peak whale watching season is during those four months.

If you want to get really specific, the peak months for whale watching are mid-January through March. This is when you’ll find official whale counts happening. And if you’re trying to figure out what island is the best for whale watching, that would be Maui !

To give you an example, the data from the whale counts on February 24, 2024 is below. These are the total number of whale sightings on each island for that day:

  • Maui: 948 whales
  • Oahu: 363 whales
  • Kauai: 239 whales
  • Hawai’i (Big Island): 466 whales

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii by Island

Oahu is the most popular island to visit — it receives over 50% of the total visitors to Hawaii! And for good reason — Honolulu is a vibrant city, there are so many cultural and historic sights, and it is the cheapest Hawaiian island to visit . You’ll save big on a hotel room to Oahu, even during the peak summer travel season:

  • Kauai: $458

Oahu is great to visit year round, but since it does get so busy, we really like to avoid the summer months. The main area of Waikiki is on the leeward side of the island, so it receives relatively little rain year round. And if you head out to Ko Olina, you’ll be met with sunny skies practically year round.

One thing to note is that you won’t want to visit the North Shore of Oahu during the winter months is you’re hoping for ocean conditions you can swim in. The North Shore of Oahu is home to big wave surfing competitions like the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. During those winter months the Pacific Ocean shows you just how powerful it is. While you won’t get in the water, it’s amazing to watch the big wave surfers.

The best time to visit Maui

The best time to visit Maui again is during the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October. Unless you’re coming for whale season, because Maui is the best island for whale watching!

In the summer Maui can get hot, especially the leeward side of the island, where you will likely be staying (Ka’anapali/Napili/Kapalua or Wailea and Kihei). Things in the summer can get jam-packed, especially on the Road to Hana. And prices surge over the summer, especially for accommodations. The average daily rate for a hotel room on Maui was $656 in July of 2023 , compared with $609 in April 2023.

If you are looking to make a trip during whale season, the best time to visit is after the new year crowds go home. Maui is extremely busy the week before Christmas through New Years, so plan your trip for mid-January to head out on your whale watching tour.

The best time to visit Kauai

Kauai is called the Garden Isle thanks to its lush landscape. The northernmost island is stunning, but rain is a requirement to keep the island so beautiful. Kauai gets a bit more of the extreme weather during winter in Hawaii, which means you should expect a little rain for at least part of your trip.

The best time to visit Kauai is May, August, September, and the beginning of October, when skies are usually blue and the ocean swells aren’t as big as during the summer months. We love spending the summer months up on the North Shore of Kauai, in Hanalei. (Check out some of the best things to do in Hanalei ).

And if you’re hoping to visit the Napali coast, summer is the best time to do so. While the ocean always seems to be a little bit rough on that side, it is significantly calmer during the summer months. And if you are staying on the north shore, there are boats that leave directly from there, making the trip out shorter! You’ll definitely want to see our review of the best Napali Coast boat tours before deciding where to go.

The best time to visit the Big Island

The Big Island is unique in that it sees its biggest surge in visitors over Christmas and New Years, so if you can, that’s the time to avoid that island. But we love going pretty much any other month of the year. The best time to visit the Big Island again is during those shoulder months of April, May, September, and October. You likely won’t see big swells on the Kohala coast during those months, which means some of the best beaches on the Big Island are easily accessible.

If you’re headed out to the Big Island to go Manta Ray night snorkeling, you’re in luck.

Unlike whale watching, you can go manta ray night snorkeling any time of year. There is no “season” as far as seeing these beautiful creatures — they live in Hawaii year round.

That said, during the winter months the ocean conditions can be rougher so you’ll see a higher number of tours cancelled thanks to dangerous conditions. If you’re planning to visit during the winter months and you want to go manta ray night snorkeling, be sure to book your trip at the beginning of your visit so you can reschedule if it gets cancelled due to bad weather or bad ocean conditions.

Before you book, check out our review of the best Manta Ray night snorkeling tours . There are a lot to choose from but we did our best to find a range of options that we think provide great experiences.

The Worst Times to Visit Hawaii

While you can figure out the best time to visit Hawaii using the charts above, you can also deduce the worst times to visit Hawaii.

The busy times to visit Hawaii are the winter and summer. The winter brings snowbirds who wish to escape the cold. Many annual travelers to Hawaii stay in timeshares or vacation rentals. Hence, vacation rental prices are higher than average during the winter.

The summer is the peak season with school being out and summer vacations. Hawaii hit a million monthly visitors in July 2019. Post-pandemic, the numbers are returning as July 2023 experienced 932,713 visitors.

Hotel rates skyrocketed compared to previous years ( why are Hawaii hotels so expensive (plus clever ways to save) ) in 2023.

The best time to visit Hawaii - Christmas

The Christmas season is another expensive time to visit due to the popularity of the islands for the holidays. While we say it is the worst time to visit Hawaii , Christmas is a special time on the islands. In fact, the holidays are our favorite season on the islands.

Best Times To Visit Honolulu - Oahu

The best time to visit Oahu is from mid-April to early June or between September and mid-December. During these shoulder seasons,  attractions are less crowded, festivals are plentiful and airfare and room rates are at their lowest. Average temperatures comfortably sit in the mid-60s to high 80s year-round, but rain showers are less prevalent from mid-June to August (Oahu's summer season), so tourists flock to the island to take advantage of the sunnier weather. Another popular (and pricey) time to visit is between late December and early April, when surfers head to the North Shore to catch waves or watch professionals compete in various surfing events.

No visit to Hawaii is complete without a day trip to Pearl Harbor National Memorial. It’s a somber break from the beach, but it’s well worth it to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1941 attack that marked the beginning of America’s involvement in World War II. Here are some important things to know about the memorial — and a few reasons why you should make time to visit this remarkable place.

The entrance to the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites

How To Get There

Pearl Harbor is located on Oahu’s southern shore, 9 miles northwest of Honolulu. If you’re staying in Honolulu or near Waikiki, it’s about a 25-minute drive away, straight up I-H-1. Public transportation is easy, accessible, and cheap ($5.50 for a day pass; $2.50 one way) on TheBus ; however, expect to spend about an hour on board with all of the stops. You can also buy a tour package that includes tickets to the site plus transportation from your hotel, or ask your hotel if they offer a shuttle; many on Oahu do. Of course, rideshare options are also plentiful on the island.

The Battleship Missouri memorial site at Pearl Harbor.

What To Know

There are 4 different museums.

Pearl Harbor, which was attacked by Japanese kamikaze pilots on December 7, 1941, is now a memorial to the 2,403 sailors, soldiers, service members, and civilians who lost their lives in the attack. While most of us associate the site with the USS Arizona (more on that in a moment), there’s much more to this hallowed place. In fact, the Arizona is only one of four different sites at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

At the Battleship Missouri Memorial , located on nearby Ford Island and accessible by shuttle bus, you can tour the ship where Japan surrendered, ending World War II.

At the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park , you can see what life was like deep under the sea during the war. The Bowfin was launched one year to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger,” so it’s fitting that it is now permanently housed at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum , the area’s newest historic site, focuses on the battles that took place in the skies during World War II. You’ll get to check out vintage warplanes and other exhibits.

While visiting the USS Arizona and the visitor center is free (but does require tickets and a $1 reservation fee), there are admission fees at the other three museums. If you want to make a full day of Pearl Harbor and tour all four sites, your best bet is to purchase a Passport to Pearl Harbor , which costs $89.99 for adults and $44.99 for children. It covers entry to all of the museums.

The USS Arizona Memorial site

The USS Arizona Is A Must-See

The most moving part of any visit to Pearl Harbor is ferrying from the visitor center to the USS Arizona . The battleship was bombed 15 minutes into the attack, and 1,177 sailors and Marines were killed onboard. More than 900 of them could not be recovered and remain on the ship, submerged in 40 feet of water near the coast of Ford Island.

The USS Arizona Memorial was constructed on top of the sunken ship in 1962. It honors the crew of the USS Arizona as well as the other service members and civilians who were killed in the attack. You can clearly see the outline of the battleship in the waters below, and you’ll be struck speechless by the names of the fallen on the marble wall — and by the oil that still seeps from the wreckage today.

The USS Arizona Memorial Program lasts 45 minutes and is facilitated by the National Park Service in partnership with the US Navy. Programs run daily, every 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It includes the US Navy-provided boat shuttle to the memorial, time on the memorial, and a return trip back to the visitor center. They are capacity limited, so you will want to reserve your tickets in advance. It’s also important to keep in mind there are no restrooms on the shuttle boats or the Arizona , so plan accordingly.

You Might Be Moved To Tears

It’s impossible to visit Pearl Harbor and not be struck by the incredible weight of what happened here, and what the tragedy ultimately meant for America. We had a hard time reconciling the natural beauty of the place, with its swaying palm trees and sparkling seaside, with the ugliness and awfulness of the surprise attack that shook our country to its core.

Expect to become emotional, even if you don’t typically wear your heart on your sleeve. We saw families who were clearly personally connected to the victims: Many brought flowers; others pointed out names on the memorial wall. We were especially moved by the small, newer list to the front of the wall. Our guide told us that these were the names of Pearl Harbor survivors who had chosen to be interred with their comrades who died on that fateful day. Navy and Park Service divers delivered their ashes directly to the USS Arizona , a poignant indicator of how the event forever haunted and changed those affected by the attacks.

We were also moved to tears by the Remembrance Circle, the outdoor exhibit that pays tribute to the men, women, and children — military members and civilians — who lost their lives that day.

Our advice: Bring tissues and large sunglasses. You will likely need both during your time at Pearl Harbor.

Entrance to the USS Missouri Memorial site

It’s Best To Plan Ahead

There are a few choices you’ll need to make before your visit, and it’s important to plan ahead. The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and the documentary about the attacks are free, as are the ferry ride and visit to the USS Arizona . However, you must present a ticket issued by the National Park Service. The tickets are issued for specific time frames and are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Consider booking them in advance online to make sure you can access the sites on the day you want to visit. The no-cost experience (movie, ferry, and Arizona stop) takes about 90 minutes.

If you decide to go for the other three experiences, plan on spending the entire day at Pearl Harbor. You will need the Passport to Pearl Harbor mentioned earlier, which can be purchased at the visitor center.

We opted to explore only the visitor center and the USS Arizona , since we had a flight to catch. We wish we had had more time to explore, but we were so glad to have seen the memorial.

There are several concession stands and cafés around the memorial to keep you fueled for the day. Because it is still a military base, bags are not allowed. Keep them in the trunk of your car or stash them in lockers at the visitor center. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

The USS Bowfin submarine at the Pearl Harbor Memorial

Why You Should Go

A visit to Pearl Harbor can be overwhelming and emotional. But there are several reasons why it’s worth putting the beach on hold for a few hours — or even a whole day — during your vacation in Hawaii.

Above all, Pearl Harbor is a place to pay one’s respects. It is not a theme park, but a place to remember the souls who perished and the sacrifices they made for our country. The USS Arizona is a stunning, visceral reminder of the true cost of war. As you peer down at the battleship, you’ll feel a debt of gratitude toward those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and during the remainder of the war. Freedom is not free, and Pearl Harbor is a place that drills that message home.

The attack on Pearl Harbor took place before many of us were born. That’s why it’s important to see the place where it happened and learn firsthand about the people it affected. The exhibits at the visitor center do an excellent job of capturing the sorrow and portraying the patriotism that Americans felt after the event and at the onset of the war. While younger generations might not be able to directly relate, a visit to Pearl Harbor will give them a better understanding of the challenges their grandparents or great-grandparents faced during this tumultuous time.

In 1948, after the Allied powers had won World War II, Winston Churchill told Britain’s House of Commons that “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” By taking in the lessons that places like Pearl Harbor offer us, we’ll never forget the events that have shaped our country . And that’s far more important than any afternoon at the beach.

Generally, the best time to visit Hawaii  for the most ideal  overall weather , lowest statewide rates , and the  fewest visitors on-island  is April and May during the spring and  September and October during the fall. Some refer to these times as Hawaii's 'off-season period' or 'shoulder months.'   In the summer, it will certainly be more crowded, so early June is best, and during the winter, though typically wetter, we recommend  January , especially if you want to see the humpback whales .

Hawaii Tips and details for each top month:

  • April  - an excellent month, but avoid holidays when applicable
  • May  - the best overall month for visitors, in our opinion. Great weather and reasonable rates

Ultimately, in our honest opinion - there isn't an inopportune time to go to Hawaii. Visiting Hawaii is a dream come true for many visitors, and who can blame them? Totals by Island - 2022 vs 2023

Totals by Island - 2022 vs 2023

Above, we've included an updated graphic comparing visitor arrivals to each major Hawaiian island for both 2022 and 2023. This bar chart provides a more accurate year-over-year comparison by aligning the time frames for both years. The impact of the wildfires on Maui is quite obvious in this chart. What we can say for certain is that  demand has softened for late 2024 and early 2025 , and the fall/winter 2024-2025 travel season has seen fewer forward bookings than usual. Some experts predict this pattern to continue, especially on Maui for the foreseeable future.

What to Expect in 2024 through early 2025

Prices that have risen over the last two years will likely continue to  impact flight costs, hotel & accommodation rates, the costs associated with rental vehicles (Turo or standard rental agency), and other rates/fees due to increases in local electricity costs (Hawaii still generates a significant amount of its electricity from petroleum fuels). As of mid-2024, Hawaii government leaders continue to debate additionally introducing a visitor or climate-impact fee that ranges from $25-$50 per traveler, but this has not been finalized yet. Increases to the accommodation tax, already the highest in the nation at up to 18%, are also not out of the question. There are also ongoing discussions about eliminating some or all vacation rental properties, at each respective island official's discretion, like those found on VRBO or AirB&B. Maui is particularly vulnerable to these changes. We're following these topics closely and will keep this page updated accordingly.

The devastating wildfires that affected West Maui in August 2023   are also continuing to impact Maui's economy at this time. Lahaina remains closed and we urge all potential Maui visitors to be especially mindful and respectful in the islands as the community continues through this tragedy.

We'll keep you posted... this article will be updated accordingly as things change.

As is to be expected, when more people are 'on-island' visiting the Hawaiian Islands - accommodation, rental, and flight costs will increase as well. To avoid the crowds and keep rates lower, you can always try visiting during non-peak visitation periods (i.e.; holidays and summer months are high-demand time periods). When preparing for your trip, the following graphic should help provide a general idea of the average rates during different times of the year. These rates fluctuate by island, but these figures still allow you to prepare accordingly.

The rates on the charts seen here are from a couple of years ago and will be updated once things settle, but generally should provide a good overview of pricing during various times of the year. Check out our new Hawaii Trip Cost Calculator tool for a more accurate estimate of exactly how much you can expect to spend on a Hawaii trip in the coming months.

Generally, Oahu accommodation prices have remained relatively consistent with pre-pandemic rates heading into the fall/winter of 2024-2025, but the outer-islands continue to see rate increases of 20-60% over pre-pandemic prices.

'Best Time to/for...' Hawaii FAQ

Seasonal events, when to book, finding the best rates, & more..., best time for good weather.

While Hawaii is a great destination year-round, the best opportunity for good weather exists during April, May, September, and October. As the tradewinds pick up over the winter months, so do the showers, and surf swells, particularly on the north/northeast (windward) shores of each island. The weather is warm year-round, with average highs in the winter of 78-82ºF (26-28ºC) and 83-88ºF (29-31ºC) in the summer months. Learn more about Hawaii weather .

Best Time to avoid crowds?

Hawaii has visitors during all months of the year, but typically, if you want to avoid the crowds , visit in either November (excluding Thanksgiving) or May for the quietest scene on the islands. Additionally, the first week of June, most of April (excluding ‘Golden Week’ and Easter), and much of September or October are great times to avoid the majority of visitors. Learn more about When to Travel to Hawaii .

Best Time to Book Hawaii Hotels?

As a rule of thumb, book early - no later than 2-3 months before you go! It's not uncommon for the Best Accommodations in Hawaii to get booked quickly, especially during the summer months over holidays. If you are planning to visit in either July or August and especially if you’re planning a visit around the Christmas/New Year’s holiday in late December, then we’d advise booking 4-6 months in advance to ensure you can reserve the room(s) you want. Be sure to check our Hotel Rates for the best prices and to compare all the top travel sites in one quick search.

Best Time to purchase Hawaii Airline Tickets?

As with accommodations, it’s best to typically book earlier than later. The best prices for Hawaii flights can vary dramatically throughout the year, depending on a variety of factors. Generally speaking, to find the best rates, we advise visitors to start searching for flights four months before your trip and to book no later than one month before your planned departure. Using this approach should provide you the best opportunity to find a good deal. If you are planning a visit during Thanksgiving, Christmas, or another holiday, we’d advise you book much earlier, as far in advance as possible to ensure the best price for what will undoubtedly be high-demand tickets during those peak periods.

Best Time to Find Deals & Discounts?

If you’re searching for the best rates when visiting Hawaii, we’d advise you to start your search for flights that arrive/depart in the middle of the week. Flying during the middle of the week will save you a lot of money, especially when flying from geographically further away. Generally, the most affordable rates for both flights and hotels in Hawaii will be primarily during the fall and somewhat so during the spring.

For accommodations, the months of September through November (sometimes into early December) offer the best hotel deals , again excluding Thanksgiving. In the spring, the best accommodation rates can be found from late March until early June (excluding the Easter holiday and Japan’s ‘Golden Week,’ in April).

For tours and activities, while many deals and specials will be ‘last-minute’ - the best discounts and specials run during the summer months (late May - July). Sign up for our Hawaii eNewsletter , a bi-weekly email containing travel tips, to also receive exclusive Hawaii discounts, deals, specials, and other promotional offers.

Best Time for Snorkeling, Swimming, and Diving?

Hawaii offers fantastic snorkeling, diving, and swimming opportunities for much of the year, but the best times are the summer months. During this period the surf will be less intense than during the winter, the water will be warmer, and the weather more cooperative - creating the perfect conditions for exploring in the water around the islands.

In our opinion, Maui snorkeling is the best you'll find in the entire state, followed by snorkeling on the Big Island . Both islands offer great snorkeling locations largely protected from surf and tradewinds on the leeward side of each island.

Best Time to ski or snowboard?

This isn’t a typo; you can ski and snowboard in Hawaii - though conditions will have to be just right. Mauna Kea , on the Big Island, means ‘white mountain’ in Hawaiian and its peaks are frequently found blanketed with a layer of snow. To provide yourself the best opportunity to partake in this winter sport, visit during February or March. Be sure to prepare accordingly, as there are limited facilities and you will need a 4x4 vehicle to reach the summit.

Best Time to take a cruise to/around Hawaii?

The best time to find a good bargain on cruises, including inter-island cruises, will be late November through mid-December. The best time for selection of boats will be in the spring (April/May) and fall (late August-October). Winter months are often more expensive (due to increased visitation), and typically wetter - but do offer the opportunity for whale watching (late November through early April).

Best Time to go Whale Watching?

Each winter, Humpback Whales migrate from Alaska to the warm waters surrounding Hawaii to mate and give birth to their calves. The best opportunities for whale watching will be from late November through mid-April; February and March often provide the best opportunities for sightings.

Best Time to get married/have a destination wedding?

As noted in the weather question, to avoid the wettest weather, try and plan your wedding for the summer months; anytime from late April until late October is usually a pretty safe bet. The middle of the summer will be warmer but is also typically the driest. Hurricane season runs from June through November as well, but storms are historically rare events. Ultimately, all factors considered - the best month for a destination wedding in Hawaii is in May.

Best Time for Hiking?

Hawaii offers some of the best hiking in the world if we may say so ourselves; a hiker could probably traverse Kauai’s trails alone for years and never get bored. As with most things in Hawaii, the hiking is excellent year-round, but the best months for hitting the trails are during the late spring and early fall (April, May, September, and October). The weather will be drier during these months, as well as throughout the entire summer, but unlike the summer, these spring/fall months will also be cooler. Be sure to take plenty of water and sunscreen before you head out, as the UV is very high in Hawaii year-round. If you hike during the winter months, be prepared for showers and trail conditions to potentially be messier / less maintained.

Best Time to visit Kilauea Volcano or go stargazing on Mauna Kea?

The Big Island’s Kilauea volcano has erupted almost continuously since 1983, sometimes more spectacularly than at other times. While there isn’t a ‘best time’ to witness something controlled by geologic forces, especially given the unpredictable nature of the volcano; if you’re planning to hike around the volcano or within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , we’d advise the same as we did in our hiking question - visit during the spring or fall when it’s not at hot, and the weather will be cooperative. The summer will often be too warm to hike anywhere near the older black lava flows.

On the other hand, if you’re heading to the summit of Mauna Kea for some stargazing, then the summer months are best due to the same warmer temperatures. The peaks of Mauna Kea can become downright frigid at night, especially during the winter months. Remember, a full moon will offer the best opportunities for clear stargazing, and be sure to prepare accordingly before heading to the summit.

Best Time to go Fishing?

Fishing is another activity that can be partaken year-round, as different species of fish will bite at different times of the year and off the coast of each unique island. Summer tends to be one of the most popular periods for fishing - offering marlin (blue and yellowfin), skipjack, and ono. Fall and spring both offer good marlin and mahi-mahi fishing. Winter months are best for catching snapper, skipjack, tuna, and striped marlin. If you're visiting Maui, we recommend Fish Maui .

Best Time to Surf, Bodyboard, or Paddleboard(SUP)?

The best time for water activities like surfing and bodyboarding will be during the winter months. The biggest waves, for professionals, will be on the north shore. For the rest of us non-pros, the south coast is best during the winter. During the summer and fall (May - September), the waves will be calmer on the north shore of each island - so all skill levels can partake.

For other water sports like paddleboarding, we like the spring and fall the best, but this again can be a year-round activity if you select the right location(s) based on the time of year you visit.

Best Time for local festivals and events?

The best time to visit for island festivals and events depends on what you're looking for during your visit. ' Merrie Monarch ,' also known as the Olympics of Hula , is held in Hilo on the Big Island every April. Over on Oahu, you can catch the 'Waikiki Spam Jam,' also usually held in April. The ' Aloha Festivals ' takes place on all the islands each year in late September.

King Kamehameha Day (June 11) and Lei Day (May 1) also both offer various festivities, including impressive lei draping ceremonies of the King Kamehameha Statutes on both the Big Island and Oahu. Check our Hawaii events page for more information on what might be taking place during your visit.

Hawaii Flight Times

Airline Costs & Flight Rates

This section will be updated once more information is available and the airline industry has had a chance to return to some sense of normalcy. Some carriers have reduced flights to the islands due to slower demand.

Alaska Air has also now completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, which they claim will improve service and routes.

Demand for Maui flights will vary as the island recovers from the devastating wildfires in August 2023.

As a general rule, we continue to advise travelers to book their flights well in advance of their trip.

Hawaii weather can often be about as sporadic as it gets, and as such, forecasting the weather on Hawaii can be both daunting and confusing to first-time visitors.

The tropical climate makes you quickly realize, 'this isn't the mainland,' and the environment takes some getting used to.

We encourage all visitors to check out our Hawaii Weather page, but here are a few quick pointers on Hawaii's weather to summarize:

  • Read up on the forecasts at the  University of Hawaii Weather  before you visit and during your stay, as they have the best and most accurate estimates on the islands.
  • Don't listen to the Weather Channel or watch the NOAA forecast graphs, of course, they'll predict rain - it technically rains almost every day in Hawaii... for about 10 minutes at a time.
  • The only time it's really wet in Hawaii for a prolonged time is during the winter months, usually from November until March. But it's not a wash by any means.
  • Temperatures at sea level usually run about 76-85 °F (24-29 °C)  all year-round. Temperatures at night are typically 12-18 °F (3-4 °C) cooler, but this can change dramatically depending on your altitude.
  • Speaking of altitude, if you're planning to go up to higher elevations on either Maui or the Big Island, bring a small coat and long convertible pants. It can get very cold at the summit of the larger volcanoes!
  • Hurricanes in Hawaii are historically rare events, but the last few seasons have seen increased tropical activity, and several tropical storms come close to the islands. If you're visiting during Hawaii Hurricane Season (June 1 - November 30th in the Central Pacific), then we advise you keep an eye on the tropics before your visit. Visitors may want to bookmark the Central Pacific Hurricane Center website for future reference.

Ultimately, don't fret about the weather, it's Hawaii! Showers are typically short-lived and sporadic, and the temperature is almost always just right.

Hawaiian Island Updates

Things to know for each island.

When planning your trip, there are a few things to keep in mind for each Hawaiian island, in addition to our Hawaii Essential Things to Know . Below we've made note of the most significant events and/or dates that may affect each island during your visit.

Best time to Visit Kauai

The best months to visit Kauai are in April , May , August , September , or October .  The weather on Kauai is consistently warm (highs in the mid-70's to mid-80's °F [24-29 °C]) year-round and visitors will enjoy the driest weather on the south shore and western portions of the island. Annual events include the May Day Festival (May) and Eo E Emalani I Alakai Festival (October) and the Chocolate & Coffee Festival (October).

For more information, be sure to read our Best Time to Visit Kauai article.

Best time to Visit Oahu

Oahu is a great island to visit at any time of the year. Still, if you especially want to dodge the crowds (on this most populous Hawaiian Island) - then the best months to visit Oahu are in May or later in the Fall (September and October are both great choices). Both times offer better rates on the island but still have fantastic weather conditions. Also, be sure to note that the last week of April is also 'Golden Week' in Japan - which can generate a large influx of Japanese visitors during that period. Other annual events on Oahu that draw international crowds include the Honolulu Marathon (December) and the Hawaii International Film Festival (October).

For more information, be sure to read our Best Time to Visit Oahu article.

Best time to Visit Maui

The best months to visit Maui are in April , May , September , or October . If you’re visiting for whale watching, February is a good choice for peak season activity.  Travelers looking for the best deals on Maui accommodations should also seek out travel periods in the spring and fall, as they will be the cheapest months to visit due to decreased demand. As far as events,   Whale watching increases visitation starting in November and continues until the spring. Weatherwise, Maui temperatures remain consistently warm with daytime highs in the 75-85 °F [24-29 °C] range during the summer and winter, respectively. If you're heading to the summit of Haleakala, be sure to bundle up accordingly as it gets quite cold atop the volcano.

For more information, be sure to read our Best Time to Visit Maui article.

Best time to Visit Big Island

The best months to visit the Big Island are May , August , or September for the best combination of great weather, low rates, and fewer visitors. Weather on the Big Island, like the other islands, stays consistently warm year-round. The main thing to note weather-wise is the differences between the Hilo (wetter and cooler eastern windward side) and Kailua-Kona (drier and warmer western leeward side). Annual events that generate an influx of visitors are the Merrie Monarch Festival (around Easter Sunday) and the Ironman competition (Kona side, typically in October).

For more information, be sure to read our Best Time to Visit the Big Island of Hawaii  article.

In summary, as you prepare for your trip - remember to check local calendars for events, review the status of the parks and locations you'd like to visit, prepare and pack the proper travel supplies  for the island(s) you're visiting, and make sure not to worry too much about the weather; Hawaii is known as "paradise" for a good reason.

Ultimately, the Best Time to visit Hawaii is when you choose to go! If you still can't decide exactly when to go, no problem - try our quiz  linked below, and we'll suggest four months we think are best for you. We hope you have a great trip! Aloha!

Which Time to Visit?

Detailed seasonal & monthly overview.

To assist visitors further, we've broken each month out in detail. If you want to find out quickly (TL;DR) which months are best for you - skip down to our Best Month to Visit Hawaii Quiz below.

Spring in Hawaii

Less rain starts to fall on the islands as the trade winds die down to their summer levels, making this an ideal time to visit. Some call this the start of the "dry" season. The weather is almost always perfect, and, in general, this is the best time to find good bargain  travel activities.  After mid-April (typically after Easter), most airfare and lodging prices drop as a result of the "high-demand" period ending. The last week of April and the first week of May are often a time when most Japanese visitors will arrive due to the "Golden Week" holiday in Japan. Water temperatures measure near the high 70°F (21° C) mark this time of year, and the surf begins to die down as the trade winds let up. The best part of the spring is the fresh flowers, fruit, and vegetation that can be seen around the island. This is our favorite time to visit. We should note that the spring does hold one large event on the Big Island of Hawaii that can cause crowding on the Hilo side of the Island: the Merrie Monarch festival, which is held annually starting on Easter Sunday.

Summer in Hawaii

Typically, the summer months, as a whole, result in less visitor demand. This fact will benefit visitors in the form of lower rates for both accommodations and rental vehicles. Some will label this the "low season," however, this "low season" classification can often be misleading regarding pricing your trip and of what crowd sizes to expect.

Since June through August are very popular with travelers in general, not just to Hawaii, Airline prices will often increase into late May through July, as demand is higher for seats nationwide. Thus, if you are flying from the East Coast or the Midwest, the most expensive flight you pay for might ironically be the continental flight to the West Coast. According to the tourism authority in the islands, July continues to be the  month  with the  most  visitor arrivals. To us, this makes sense because this is when most families visit the island, as their children are out of school. The same is true for local children on the island; this is their summer, and they often frequent the same beaches, trails, and places you'll be visiting, too.

The summer months are always the warmest on the island, and temperatures can reach as high as 90+°F (32+°C) under the right conditions. Combined with the high humidity, the heat can occasionally be unpleasant for some travelers not accustomed to it. Surf is at its lowest during the summer, and the rain clouds are few and far between, except on the windward coast.

Swimming & Hiking Conditions

Water temperatures usually rise above the 80°F (26°C) mark during the Summer months. The tradewinds are also calmer during this time of the year as well, resulting in less surf on the northern shores (e.g., better for snorkeling, swimming, etc.) on each island.

Regarding hiking, in our opinion, the summer months are typically too warm for a lot of outdoor hiking and adventure, especially at locations like the Big Island's black lava fields or any other island's coastal trails (Kalalau on Kauai for example). Lower prices are helpful on the wallet; however, the sun and humidity combination makes going anywhere, but the beach seems like a chore. If you plan to be especially active outdoors, we advise visiting a few months earlier in the spring or a few months later in the fall if you can.

Tropical Storms in Hawaii

While historically a rare event, the summer months are also hurricane season in Hawaii, and the islands are certainly not immune to a hit. Such was the case with Iniki in September 1992. It came ashore on Kauai as a strong category 3 (borderline category 4) storm. Since then, several additional storms have grazed Hawaii, but none have caused such widespread damage as Iniki. Again, tropical storm systems are historically rare - simply be aware they do occur from time to time. In fact, over the last few years including the Summer of 2018, there have been more tropical systems near and around the islands than normal.

Fall in Hawaii

More rain begins to fall in November as the trade winds increase to their winter levels, and there are days where rain showers will dominate on the windward coast and mauka areas. Occasionally, Kona storms will dump a tremendous amount of rain on the islands and can cause wind damage in several areas. Tropical Storms and/or Hurricanes can also still pose a threat to Hawaii during the fall. However, as a general rule, Kona storms cause more headaches than tropical storms. So what exactly IS a Kona storm?

Kona Storms in Hawaii

When a Kona storm develops or moves into the area, the prevailing wind pattern changes - south and southwesterly winds replace the trade winds. Since the winds typically affect the Kona coast of the Big Island, the storms have thus taken on that name. Although destructive Kona storms are fairly rare, they occur often enough to warrant a mention here. Kona storms bring high winds, heavy rain, snow atop higher mountains (like Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island), and lightning and thunder can occur (a rarity in Hawaii). Due to extreme terrain differences in the islands, weather conditions can be highly variable across a relatively small area. Gusts of wind up to 60 mph (96km/h) have been known to happen on the Big Island, while other portions of the Hawaiian chain simply deal with increasing breezes. In general, the fall months and the spring months are very similar. Like in the spring, the Big Island of Hawaii can become quite busy during October, as a major event is held on the island. Typically, in October, the Ironman Triathlon event is held on the Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Check online calendars for the exact dates each year. Also note that in the late fall, visitor demand to Hawaii begins to increase in mid-December, which typically causes rates for flights, tours, and accommodations to rise.

Winter in Hawaii

By the first day of winter, the high demand period in Hawaii around Christmas and New Year's has begun on the islands.

The 'high season/period' term, of course, brings back the debate about defining "low" and "high" season. And although the tourism authority in the islands, using 2018 data, shows the second highest number of visitors arriving in December of each year, it's important to note that most of these visitors are showing up for about a week - Christmas through New Year. This period is always a busy time on the islands and can almost single-handedly make this the "high season" for accommodations. Thus, on average, the prices are higher and occupancy rates are higher.

Bottom-line on pricing:  expect to pay more in winter months. As noted in the introduction, Christmas is a time that anyone who dislikes crowds should avoid coming to the islands.

The high temperature remains a comfortable average of near 78°F (25°C). Water temperatures are often around 74°F (23°C) during this period, and swimming can be rough as a result of the higher surf. If you're coming to Hawaii to see any surfing events, then this is definitely the time to come -, especially on Maui and Oahu. During the winter months, this is one of the only places in the world you can come play in the snow (on the Big Island and occasionally Maui) and swim in the (warm) ocean in the same day. Winter is also the  whale watching  season in Hawaii. Humpback whales travel all the way from Alaska every winter to mate, calve, and birth their young (usually in the shallow waters off the coast of Maui). Unless you are coming specifically for big surf or to see whales, we believe winter is usually the least desirable time to visit the islands. Despite the waterfalls being more active due to the rain, and the potential to see huge surf and the amazing shows put on by whales breaching off the coast, the combination of higher prices, wetter weather, and cooler temperatures has never sat well with us. You can easily visit during the spring or fall for much cheaper prices and better weather.

2024-2025 Hawaii Budget Calculator

Estimate the cost of your hawaii vacation, calculator overview.

This calculator is designed to provide both a comprehensive and regularly updated budget estimate for planning a trip to Hawaii. Currently, rates are applicable for 2024-2025. Generally, these rates should provide a good estimate for any time period between 2024 and mid 2025.

This budget tool considers all of the following:

  • Hawaii Flight Costs including airfare from various destinations, baggage fees, etc.
  • Hawaii Accommodation Costs including different lodging types, Hawaii's now roughly 18% accommodation tax, parking fees (if applicable), which island you're staying on, etc.
  • Hawaii Vehicle Rental Costs including various types of vehicles, fuel costs, and number of miles driven daily.
  • Additional Costs including dining + gratuity, visitor fees to parks, etc., and Hawaii Tours and Activity costs.

Hawaii Flight Costs

First, consider your flight costs to Hawaii. Select your departure location, update the number of travelers (if applicable), and check whether you expect to pay baggage fees, below.

Hawaii Accommodation Costs

Next, let us know which island you'll be visiting (select the primary island if you're visiting more than one), select a lodging type/classification, update the number of nights (default is set to a week), update the number or rooms (if applicable), and check whether you expect to pay parking fees (common in more densely populated areas on Oahu and/or Maui).

Statewide Rate : 18%

Hawaii Car Rental Costs

Now, let's consider your vehicle rental costs (if applicable). If you're not renting a car, select 'No Car,' but for most visitors, we highly recommend a rental. Update the number of days (which will default to +1 day more than you selected in accommodation nights) and choose an estimate for your mileage each day. If you're not sure, we recommend you leave the default option selected.

If you select 'No Car' this will be zeroed out by default!

Other Hawaii Costs

Finally, consider a few last potential costs and fees for your trip. There's dining (we've included gratuity in the estimates), and we've selected all three meal options by default. Then, there are potential fees for parks and other attractions, which are a relatively new factor to now consider when estimating a Hawaii budget; select the applicable options below. Finally, select the amount, if any, you expect to spend on Hawaii Tours and/or commercial Activities. Be sure to update the number of people dining and people the fees/tours apply to if applicable; these numbers will default to the same number of people you selected previously for this trip estimate.

We'll email you a copy of your results to this email address for your records.
