Puff Daddy and The Family Bad Boy Reunion Tour, 2016

The 20th anniversary Bad Boy reunion bash at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Friday night (May 20) wasn’t just a hashtaggable event (though #TBT And #FBF would be appropriate descriptors), but rather a celebration of the late Notorious B.I.G.  and a semi-deep dive into the crates spanning the legacy that Puffy and Co. built.

Three hours before what would have marked the late Notorious B.I.G.’s 44th birthday (May 21), Brooklyn was in party mode for night one of the hip-hop family affair. Rap and R&B royalty two-stepped and Diddy bopped across the stage from Sean Combs himself to Faith Evans , 112 , Lil’ Kim , Total, Carl Thomas , The Lox ( Jadakiss , Styles P and Sheek Louch ), Lil’ Cease and  Black Rob , each serving up their most notable Bad Boy-branded hits. Even B.B. affiliate French Montana came on board with a more millennial-friendly set that included “Off The Rip,” “Pop That” and an appearance from Rick Ross for “Stay Schemin’.” The special guests carried a VIP list of mind-blowing cameos from Usher , Busta Rhymes , Jay Z , Nas and Mary J. Blige .

Below are the 13 most nostalgic moments from last night’s star-studded Puff Daddy & The Bad Boy Family reunion.

Trending on Billboard

1. “We did it Brooklyn! We did it!” Puff said at the top of the night with an opening medley that included the Family’s “Victory” off Puff’s 1997 debut, No Way Out,  the 2015 dance floor magnet “Finna Get Loose” featuring Pharrell on a Jumbotron, “Bad Boy For Life” and the flossy Puff and Ma$e collabo “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down.” The latter marks the Bad Boy chief’s debut single, loaded with old school feels courtesy of a sample from Grandmaster Flash ’s 1982 classic “The Message” with a hook referencing Matthew Wilder ’s 1983 “Break My Stride.”

2. 112’s set provided the quintessential Ladies’ Night soundtrack as the R&B quartet — comprised of Quinnes “Q” Parker, Marvin “Slim” Scandrick, Michael Keith and Daron Jones — donned matching ensembles in true boy band fashion and delivered their hits “It’s Over Now,” “Dance With Me” and the steamy “Peaches and Cream.” During the night’s finale, they also sang their standout debut “Only You,” which featured Biggie and Ma$e, as well as the B.I.G. tribute “I’ll Be Missing You” alongside Puff and Faith Evans.

3. Bad Boy Records’ resident girl trio Total , c lad in shiny silver numbers,  re-emerged with their ’90s cuts, launching into their Missy Elliott duet “Trippin’” (Misdemeanor didn’t hit the stage with Keima, Keisha and Pam, sadly) followed by “No One Else” and their slow jam “Kissin’ You.” They also lent their vocals to the closing medley with a live rendition of their first single “Can’t You See?” which featured Notorious B.I.G.

4. D-Block hit Flatbush Avenue when the Lox stomped onto the stage with street anthems in tow like the Biggie collaboration “Last Day,” “We Gonna Make It,” “I Get High” and “Wild Out.” Despite their falling out with Puff over a decade ago (see: the “Free The Lox” campaign and their November 2005 interview on Hot 97 ), beef was buried when Jada, Styles and Sheek hyped the crowd as part of the Bad Boy set.

5. R&B singer Carl Thomas brought the feels to Barclays by gliding through his highest notes, including the chest-pounding “Emotional,” the groovy “Summer Rain” and the heartbreak anthem “I Wish.” Though Faith Evans was also on the bill, the pair did not reunite for their 2001 duet “Can’t Believe.”

6. A red-headed Faith Evans time-traveled back to 1995 with performances of her R&B gems like “You Used to Love Me” and “Soon as I Get Home,” which both contributed to making her debut studio effort, Faith , a platinum success.

7. In one-off performances of their charting successes , Mario Winans delivered his 2004 hit “I Don’t Wanna Know,” Cassie brought back her 2006 single “Me & You” while Black Rob hit the crowd with the 2000 single “Whoa!” Birthday boy Busta Rhymes also hit the stage for a 2016 update of “Pass the Courvoisier,” which Diddy finessed into a shameless plug for his vodka, singing, “Pass the Ciroc this way.”

8. Barclays exploded with Jay Z’s appearance  during Puffy’s performance of the Dirty Money hit “Angels.” Here, Hov segued into a rendition of the song’s original sample, his 1997 ode to Brooklyn “Where I’m From.” The two legends shared a sentimental moment as Puff praised the BK native for being a part of the extended Bad Boy family. “You’ve been there for me through my ups and downs. Whenever I get in trouble, this is the one I call. This is my strategist right here, this my brother, this B.I.G.’s brother, this Brooklyn’s own,” praised Puff before Jay launched into his classic hit “Public Service Announcement.”

9. Queensbridge finest Nas also made an unannounced stop in BK  for a fiery performance alongside Puff for their 2009 collaboration “Hate Me Now.” Both Diddy and Esco traveled the stage with long black fur coats that required two handlers each to carry the lengthy train. Nas then rocked the mic for a solo performance of 2002’s “Made You Look,” which ignited chants of “Hip-hop!”

10. Lil’ Kim stormed the stage  with an arsenal of rap hits that made her Bad Boy’s Queen Bee. Despite mic issues, the Brooklyn native flooded the stage with a set of classics that included her  Mobb Deep collaboration “Quiet Storm (Remix),” “Big Momma Thang,” “Lighters Up,” and “Queen B-tch.”

11. R&B megastar Usher pulled up to the scene as one of the night’s standout surprises, bringing his smooth moves and vocals to Puffy duets like “I Need A Girl” parts one and two ( Ginuwine didn’t appear for the latter) as well as a performance of his 2004 jam “Bad Girl.”

12. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige held church in Brooklyn  as MJB loyalists sang along to every note from the ’90s including “Real Love,” “Be Happy” and “I’m Goin Down.” Following her set, she saluted Puff for his contributions to her career. “Now I’m the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul because of this dude right here,” she offered. “So Puff, you’re my miracle. Thank you so much.”

13. Not only did the Bad Boy extravaganza provide a chance for attendees to turn up to two decades worth of hits, it provided a four-hour long trip down memory lane (the show ended approximately 1:30 a.m.) for Puff who sandwiched individual sets with throwback footage of a young Sean Combs calling himself “the shiny suit man,” reminiscing over his A&R beginnings at Uptown Records and even his past relationships (clips of his children’s mother Kim Porter and his romance with Jennifer Lopez were shown). The night wrapped with an emotional tribute to the star of the night, the late Biggie, who rapped alongside his hip-hop family via music videos on a large screen, especially for the confetti-covered finale, “I’ll Be Missing You.”

so many more moments to run through but ill end my IG binge on this note. RIP & happy birthday biggie. #badboyfamilyreuniontour A video posted by adelle (@adelleplaton) on May 21, 2016 at 12:03am PDT

There’s no doubt that Bad Boy Records has left its mark on hip hop and music. Arguably, you could even say that the 90s were run by the Bad Boy crew, with Puff Daddy dancing front and center. But in case you forgot about the multi-platform company that brought along names like Lil Kim and Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy has announced the Bad Boy Family Reunion concert at the Barclays Center this May.

The family reunion, which is in celebration of the Notorious B.I.G.’s birthday, will include performances by Bad Boy acts, both old and new, including Faith Evans , Lil Kim, Mase , The LOX , French Montana , Total , and 112 . As if that weren’t enough to handle already, the mogul also announced that the night to remember would include special appearances by Jay Z and Mary J. Blige.

Diddy Brings The Bad Boy Family Together At 2015 BET Awards

While this reunion may be much needed and appreciated for the fans who played out every club record on the radio, the point of the reunion concert is to celebrate and remember what would’ve been Biggie Smalls’ 44th birthday. “This isn’t just another concert — this is hip-hop history,” Diddy said. “The Bad Boy Family includes some of the biggest names in music and songs that helped define a whole generation of music. Also, we are celebrating one of the greatest of all time – Notorious B.I.G. This will be a night to remember. I can’t wait to see you all there.”

Puffy and the gang got together for a mini reunion at the BET Awards last year in celebration of the entertainment company’s 50th anniversary. That was only a short set though. So it’s only expected that this will go above and beyond to celebrate the life and legacy of B.I.G.

The Bad Boy Family Reunion will take place on May 20, following Biggie’s birthday on the 21. Ticket prices will vary and will be up for grabs on Live Nation April 2.

Diddy Brings Out DMX, Fabolous and Desiigner at Bad Boy Reunion Show

Bad Boy for life! In a hip-hop super show more than 20 years in the making, Diddy and friends took over Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the second night (May 21) of the highly anticipated Bad Boy Reunion Show.

When the Bad Boy head honcho announced the star-studded show back in March , he promised a full-on family reunion from Bad Boy's heyday plus a slew of surprise guests in addition to a showcase from his hit-making roster. Puff was accompanied by nearly the entire Bad Boy family including Ma$e, 112, Total, The Lox, Faith Evans, Cassie, Lil’ Kim, Carl Thomas, Mario Winans, French Montana, Mary J Blige and Black Rob. Even Shyne , who has been exiled to Belize since 2009, made an appearance via satellite to perform his signature hit "Bad Boyz."

But while Diddy brought out OGs like Jay Z and Nas the night before , last night's set brought out a healthy mix of old and new school. During Lil' Kim's energetic set, one of standout moments of the night, the Queen Bee commanded the crowd, running through everything from "Big Mama Thang" to "Lighters Up." But in between her hits, Kim proved she kept it "sturdy" for Brooklyn by inviting Brooklyn's 2 Milly and Desiigner on stage to each perform the respective singles that made them viral sensations, "Milly Rock" and "Panda." Not to be pegged as a hype beast, Kim also brought out Fabolous for "Ball Drop."

Toward the middle of the night, Puff, already on his fifth outfit change, began to intro an artist not on the Bad Boy roster but close to his heart. Audio of dog growls began to blare throughout the arena and Dark Man X galloped across the stage while the shocked crowd did most of the work for him, screaming the choruses to "X Gon' Give It to Ya" and "Party Up in Here" as if it were still 1999.

Faith Evans, Total and 112 held it down to the R&B side of things for the evening with Faith looking godly in her all-white fur coat and jumpsuit. But nobody got the crowd quite in their feelings like the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, who not only got lit with Puff during a little dance breakdown and shed a tear when the place belted "I'm Going Down" word for word, but also thanked Combs for, as she put it, "believing in me when I didn't believe myself."

"We pride ourselves on being known as the hip-hop Motown," said Puff toward the end of the show after proving his label's hitmaking caliber. With the date of the night's show falling on what would have been Notorious B.I.G.'s 44th birthday , the night ended with a montage of the first hits that put Bad Boy on the map, "Warning," "Juicy," "Big Poppa," "Hypnotize," "Mo Money Mo Problems" and more. Amid balloons and confetti, three generations of Diddy-associated hip-hop royalty toasted to their accomplishments (with Ciroc bottles in hand).

Much of the night felt straight out of a time capsule, bridging the past and present to create a new moment in time. For '80s babies who grew up during Bad Boy's primetime, the night held immeasurable nostalgic value and for '90s babies who do their homework, they got a glimpse of Diddy and the gang in their former glory.

For those who missed out on the two nights at the Barclays Center, catch the family when the Bad Boy Reunion Tour hits 25 U.S. cities this summer --  full tour dates  here. Check out some of the coverage from last night's epic Brooklyn show below.

Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs is the walking definition of overcoming adversity and flourishing from your wins. The 46-year-old hip-hop mogul reflected on his journey for a moment Friday night as thousands at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center watched, sharing his story of getting fired as an A&R at Uptown Records by Andre Harrell and founding Bad Boy Records, the juggernaut East Coast-based label with over 20 years of artists and hits under its belt.

Anyone else would crumble after losing their job, but Puff’s ear for talent was uncanny. He was instrumental in developing Mary J. Blige, and nearly two decades later she was still appreciative. When Blige came out to perform timeless hits “Real Love,” “Be Happy,” and “You Don’t Have to Worry,” she thanked him for taking a tomboy living in the projects and transforming her into the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, whose signature baggy look became a staple of the ’90s.

“There will be no Bad Boy without Mary J. Blige,” Puffy said, which set the tone for a deafening singalong of “I’m Goin’ Down.”

There were plenty of thank-you tributes just like this from all his guests throughout the first sold-out show on the “Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour,” held in honor of The Notorious B.I.G.’s 44th birthday. (The group will return for a second concert tonight.) Puff accomplished the near-impossible task of condensing a significant chunk of hip-hop and R&B history into four hours, giving fans flashes of nostalgia as the likes of Total, 112, Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, The LOX, Lil’ Kim, and Ma$e performed their classics from the Bad Boy catalogue to a sold-out crowd. Puff, ever the perfectionist, was nearly two hours late, but that didn’t bother the audience as they suddenly got out of their seats when a countdown appeared on-screen, signaling that greatness was on its way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5-1gEandMc

Behind video montages of key markers in Bad Boy’s past, the label’s alumni emerged wearing all black and Puff rose from beneath the custom-made Bad Boy stage to kick things off with “Victory” featuring the night’s first guest Busta Rhymes. Within minutes, fans were taken back to the Shiny Suit Era. Puff and his longtime partner Ma$e ran through “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and “Been Around the World.” It didn’t stop there: 112 serenaded the crowd with their string of hits, “It’s Over Now,” “Dance With Me,” and “Peaches & Cream.” Then it was Kima, Keisha, and Pam’s turn, sounding pitch-perfect when they delivered “Trippin'” and “Kissin’ You.” Total performing in 2016 may sound insane on paper, but these were the type of reactions that hip-hop’s most influential entertainer wanted you to have.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFrJuAbPMX7/

Each act had about 15 minutes or so to command the arena, so they made sure to make it count. Over the course of Bad Boy’s illustrious legacy, fans have latched on to their favorites as the years have gone by, waiting for concerts like this to see if they still got it. Despite spotty sound issues, Bad Boy’s marquee artists—The LOX, Carl Thomas, and the incomparable Faith Evans—all received cheers from their faithful fans, even growing louder as those undeniable tracks like Faith’s “I Love You” echoed throughout the arena.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Ee29KQhCo

After French Montana and Rick Ross zipped us back to modern times with anthems “Stay Schemin'” and “Pop That,” Puff paid special tribute to Biggie with an emotional performance of “Angels.” A white spotlight shined on him, and the Bad Boy platform rose just high enough for Puff to speak directly to his friend from up above.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFp7HYxlYW5/

Jay Z, who missed out on Blue Ivy’s recital for this, did his verse on the dedication track, and in a rare occasion looked like the little brother to big brother Puffy. “You’ve been there with me from my ups and downs. Whenever I get in trouble, this is the one I call. This my strategist right here. This my brother. This B.I.G.’s brother. This Brooklyn’s own Brooklyn!” he shouted, before politely asking to perform his favorite song, “Public Service Announcement,” which Hov happily obliged.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFrVfnfnR2t/

If Jigga wasn’t enough, Nas came out for “Hate Me Now” with Puff—both wearing big fur coats that required two guys each to hold the ends. God level.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHKCde77KA0

The surprises went into overdrive after that. Busta returned to perform “Pass the Ciroc” (no Courvoisier). Lil’ Kim—dressed in all white—rapped her verse on “Quiet Storm (Remix),” continuing to prove she’s the OG Queen Bee with a word-for-word exchange of “Queen Bitch” with the crowd. Mario Winans hit us with “I Don’t Wanna Know,” Cassie crushed her smash single “Me & U,” and Ty Dolla $ign joined Diddy for “You Could Be My Lover.” Usher also surprised with “U Don’t Have to Call” and “I Need a Girl, Pt. 1 and 2.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkHXz-6x2lw

Just when Puff had the crowd reeling, he wanted to make sure we were really having fun. He saved the best set of songs for last, dedicating a portion of the show to Biggie where he projected videos from songs such as “Warning” and “Juicy.” This was the apex because the entire Bad Boy family also returned for remixes and guest spots. Lil Cease did his thing on “Player’s Anthem,” as well as Kim and The LOX for the remix of “It’s All About the Benjamins.” Black Rob performed his street banger “Whoa!” Ma$e joined Puff and tore down “Mo Money Mo Problems.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvpWJU92P-w

The closer for the evening was “I’ll Be Missing You,” a touching performance with Faith belting her chorus alongside a gospel choir that all happened right as Biggie’s would-be 44th birthday rang in. Confetti and balloons fell from the sky. “Happy birthday, playboy,” Puff said. But it wasn’t over: he and the Family brought out a cake for everyone to sing happy birthday to one of the greatest MCs of our time. Life after death is still sweet for the Notorious.

It's safe to say that, last night, no place was more full of energy and overflowing with nostalgia than Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn. The occasion? The sold-out kickoff show for Bad Boy Entertainment's 25-date reunion tour celebrating the label's massive impact on hip-hop, rap, and R&B.

Opening night saw electric performances ( and unforgettable outfits ) from rap and R&B legends Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes, Jay Z, The Lox, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, and the Bad Boy girl group, Total, as well as a new generation of rappers, including Bad Boy signee French Montana and L.A.'s own Ty Dolla $ign, who joined Diddy onstage for the Puff Daddy & The Family track, "You Could Be My Lover."

And, of course, there was an outsized tribute to Bad Boy's most famous act, and patron saint of Brooklyn, Notorious B.I.G., who would have celebrated his 44th birthday today. (Accordingly, Brooklyn borough president, Eric Adams, officially proclaimed May 21 as "Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace" Day this week.) For the performance of their 1997 hit tribute song to the late rapper, "I'll Be Missing You," Evans and Diddy were joined onstage by a gospel choir, leading to what we can't imagine was a single dry eye in the place. Check out some clips from the concert below.

Puff Daddy on Bad Boy Family Reunion: 'We're the greatest show on earth'

After taking the Today show stage Friday morning to kick off its summer concert series , Puff Daddy & the Family will head across the East River to perform at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for the first of the Bad Boy Reunion Tour gigs. “We’re like the circus coming to town,” Daddy told EW after his performance on Today . “We’re the greatest show on earth, baby.”

The reunion concerts stemmed from his noteworthy performance with other Bad Boy Records figures at last June’s BET Awards. “We did a trial run at BET,” he said. “We celebrated our 20 years and when I fell through that hole on BET my lightbulb went off. When I put my superhero powers and jumped up and landed back on stage flawlessly I was like, ‘We need to take this show on the road! This thing is suspenseful!'”

That tour initially manifested itself as two gigs at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, slated for May 20 and 21 and sporting a lineup consisting of Daddy, Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Lil’ Kim, Mase, French Montana, Total, 112, and Mario Winans. (Bad Boy Records legend the Notorious B.I.G. would’ve turned 44 on the first of the dates.) But the gigs sold out in minutes, confirming that widespread demand for reunion shows existed.

“The reunion came together because it was just so needed,” Mase told EW. “When you think about hip-hop and music in general, it’s just time to have that good celebration of music. Being with a guy like Puff that’s such a visionary, getting everybody together was an easy task.”

A modified version of the Brooklyn lineup — sans Jay Z and Mary J. Blige, but with the Lox and Carl Thomas — will hit the road for 25 dates beginning Aug. 25 in Columbus, Ohio and wrapping Oct. 8 in Oakland, California. “It’s a very modern show,” said Puff Daddy, who has said he’ll retire from music after releasing his next album No Way Out 2 . “It mixes the past, present, and the future. And when you leave there, you’re gonna leave there saying, ‘That was one of the best times I ever had.’ Because we’re not up there to shine, we’re up there to serve the people and the crowd.”
