Trek Fuel EX 5: In depth Review of the 2018 model

The 2018 Trek Fuel EX 5 has gone through some changes from the 2017 version. These changes have brought it up to date and made it a very capable and rugged bike.

Who is it for?

The Trek Fuel EX is a cross-country bike that is good for beginners and experts alike. It is ideal for those riders who like to go long distances. This bike allows the rider to take on technical terrain and have some serious fun on flowy single track too.

Specifications

How does it ride.

trek fuel ex

The Trek Fuel EX climbs brilliantly, due to the Shimano drive train. Additionally, the 29″ wheels help you roll over rocks and roots easily. This makes technical climbs a bit easier. Personally, I would prefer it to come with a dropper seat post, as it would make undulating trails a lot easier, and for a cross-country bike, this is the whole point.

Trek Fuel EX does have a lock out on the rear shock that makes climbing easier, however it only has two modes, off and on. I may be being a bit picky here, but sometimes you want at least some suspension travel for technical climbs. Therefore, I would like to see a shock that gives you the option to firm up the suspension, but not totally lock out if desired.

Descending and flow sections

For a 29″ wheeled bike the Trek Fuel EX is surprisingly agile. It turns a lot tighter than I expected it to, and rolls over obstacles, rocks and roots with ease. This gives you lots of confidence and you find yourself using the brakes less on descents. When blasting a long flow single track, it is great fun in a weird grown up way, rather than an aggressive playful way.

I found the Bontrager tyres are good for climbing and they roll easily. They also provide good grip in a straight line on the dirt. However, they have quite a round profile. Therefore, for me, they did not give me too much confidence on wet slippy rocks and corners. But, you cannot have everything. If I was to buy this bike, I would upgrade the tyres to something a bit more grippy.

Where is the Trek Fuel EX 5 good for?

The Trek Fuel EX 5 is great for long distance trail riding, especially when you fit a dropper post. We tested this bike at Coed y Brenin in North Wales, and it was great for trail centre riding. You wouldn’t want to do big jumps and drops with it, but it should cope with anything that most trail centres can throw at it.

Key Features

  • Alpha Platinum Aluminium Frame
  • RockShox Recon Silver Fork
  • RockShox Deluxe RL Rear Shock
  • Shimano Deore 20 Speed Drivetrain
  • Shimano M315 Hydraulic Disc Brakes
  • Bontrager XR3, 29 x 2.30″ Tyres
  • Mino-Link feature is a small chip in the rocker link that allows you to change the seat stay position. This allows you to change the geometry of the bike. Therefore, you can make it lower and slacker to make it a bit more downhill friendly.

trek fuel ex 5 plus 2018

A great cross-country bike that is very capable. The advantage of being able to change the geometry with the Mino-Link is a great feature. The Trek Fuel EX 5 is great but it would benefit from wider handlebars, a dropper seat post and stickier tyres for riding in the wet. Out of the box, this bike will be amazing in dry conditions, but, customising your bike is fun, so don’t be put off buying one.

Trek Fuel EX 5 27.5 Plus (2017) review

Fuel EX 5 Plus eats up boulders and roots on the descents

Trek Fuel EX 5 27.5 Plus 2017

Product Overview

Overall rating:, trek fuel ex 5.

  • First-class frame quality
  • Needs better tyres and a clutch mech

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:.

For 2017, Trek has completely reworked its Fuel EX platform. Not only has it increased the travel to 130mm, it now offers two versions: one with 29in wheels, and a 27.5 Plus bike with massive 2.8in tyres. And it’s this bike that we’ve tested here.

trek fuel ex 5 plus 2018

Both models share the exact same frame, but the Plus bikes get 140mm travel forks , 10mm more than the 29ers. The extra fork length helps raise the bottom bracket height and offset the fact that Plus wheels come up smaller than 29in wheels.

Trek isn’t the only brand to adopt this two-wheel size, single frame approach, but its Mino-Link gives a distinct advantage. This small, asymmetric chip in the rocker link allows you to change the seatstay position relative to the link, which in turn changes the geometry.

In the high position, with Plus wheels, the BB height is roughly the same as the 29er in the low setting. As such, the Plus bike ships in the high position, but there’s nothing to stop you running it in the lower/slacker setting.

trek fuel ex 5 plus 2018

Rubber bumper adds belt and braces protection

One new feature on the Fuel EX frame is the Straight Shot down tube. According to Trek, it’s stiffer and lighter than the gooseneck profile normally used to achieve the necessary fork crown clearance.

Trek gets around the clearance issue with a steering lock that prevents the fork crown ever reaching the down tube.

Full steering lock is about 53° in either direction, and we’ve only hit the stop once while riding, on a particularly tight switchback climb.

Trek may have bumped up the travel on the Fuel EX, but it hasn’t taken away any of the signature features that made its suspension great. It’s still got ABP (Active Braking Pivot) to help keep the rear wheel tracking when the rear brake is applied, and there’s a metric size shock with increased overlap for improved reliability.

We’re not really fans of lock-outs, and while the one on the RockShox Deluxe is solid, we’d prefer a setting that firms up the suspension for climbing, but doesn’t make the rear suspension totally redundant.

Guide pressures printed on the lower legs of the RockShox Sektor Silver fork proved to be surprisingly accurate, but even with the rebound damping set fully open, the fork felt a little sluggish to return, so light riders running lower pressure will struggle to get the optimum set-up.

trek fuel ex 5 plus 2018

Tubeless-ready rims spell less sighs and more highs

Trek states that the Fuel EX 5 comes with a 750mm handlebar , which sounds ideal. Unfortunately, the bike actually has a 720mm bar, which is at odds with its progressive geometry and attitude. Thankfully, it gets a 60mm stem, so all is not lost.

Probably the biggest oversight in the specification is that it doesn’t get a clutch rear mech. As such, the Fuel EX is more prone to dropping the chain, and it’s noisy as hell, even with the rubberised chainstay protector.

trek fuel ex 5 plus 2018

Check your Mino-Link bolts — ours fell out

Performance

Setting up the Trek was a doddle. And seeing as we weren’t clipping pedals in the high geometry setting, we quickly flipped the Mino-Link to the low position to take advantage of the slacker head angle. All was golden until one of the Mino-Links fell out mid-ride.

Thanks to Head For The Hills bike shop, in Dorking, we were back up and running the very same day, and this time we added a spot of Loctite to the bolt.

In the right conditions, the Fuel EX 5 Plus eats up boulders and roots on the descents, and this encourages you to ride off the brakes.

Bontrager’s Chupacabra 2.8in tyres also provide unparalleled traction on the climbs, making the most painful part of your ride that much easier. They also roll surprisingly quickly, but the profile is very rounded, so the bike can start to slide in corners before you even reach the side knobs.

Get it on some sloppy waterlogged singletrack and it’s even more difficult to keep it moving in a straight line — and that’s with our £220 Maxxis tyre upgrade.

Trek Fuel EX 8 29 (2018) review

Accurate and versatile all-rounder with speed to spare

Steve Behr / Immediate Media

Guy Kesteven

Massively-stiff, progressively-shaped frame; shock and wheels breed free rough-terrain speed; well-matched, very effective componentry for the money

2018 Fox Rhythm fork needs tuning to do the rest of the ride justice; press-fit bottom brackets can wear fast

trek fuel ex 5 plus 2018

Small but significant component and suspension changes make the EX 8 a potentially excellent all-rounder if you like your ride fast and focused. The Fox Rhythm fork needs accurate tweaking to match the rest of the ride though.

  • How to slay steep trail sections
  • How to hit blind jumps like a pro

The Fuel EX is unchanged for 2018, apart from the switch to a metric shock in Trek’s ‘Full Floater’ position between the rocker link and extended chainstay tips.

You’re getting the same super-stiff, ‘Knock Block’-equipped mainframe with neat semi-internal control routing, down tube bottle mount and press-fit bottom bracket (which isn’t likely to last as long as a threaded one). A chip on the seatstay can be flipped to change the head angle by 0.5 degrees and bottom bracket height by 10mm.

Trek’s ‘ABP’ pivot runs through the rear wheel axle to reduce the effects of braking on the 130mm of travel, which is controlled by a unique ‘RE:aktiv’-valved Fox shock.

Trek Fuel EX 8 29 kit

While the EX 8 is creeping up in price by £99 for 2018, you get a lot for that extra cash. The most obvious hop-up on paper is SRAM’s GX Eagle, with its 12 sprockets and X-Sync 2 ring.

Just as obvious on the trail, though, is the change to top-spec Team Issue Bontrager XR4 tyres (one of our favourites). The 30mm rims plump them up to a chunky 60mm width, but there’s space for 3.0in rubber in the frame if you buy a second set of wheels (or go for the 650b+ rather than 29er bike in the first place).

  • Bontrager XR4 Expert TLR 29x2.4 tire review
  • Bontrager XR4 27.5x2.35in MTB tyre review

Bonty also supplies the updated Drop Line dropper , and the 35mm-diameter bar and stem, which help translate the Fuel EX’s HD-clarity stiffness advantage right through to the grips.

While the Guide R brakes are the entry-level members of SRAM’s four-cylinder family, they’re better modulated and more powerful than the stoppers found on the Whyte T-130 S, Scott Spark 945 and Mondraker Factor XR + that were also on test.

Fox’s Rhythm 34 fork gets an extended EVOL negative spring for 2018, which makes it smoother over small bumps. My sample dived excessively and wouldn’t return to full extension though — effectively steepening the bike’s head angle — even when I ran 20psi more pressure than recommended, so I added two volume spacers.

The larger negative chamber of the 2018 Float DPS shock delivers a similar advantage in sensitivity, but the seamless support of the ‘RE:aktiv’ damper tune stops it being too linear or feeling flaccid when pedalling.

Trek Fuel EX 8 29 ride impression

The combination of accurately-damped rear suspension and a super-precise and muscular front end and cockpit reveals itself as the Trek’s major handling trait straight away.

Relatively low weight means the Trek feels encouragingly positive when you’re pushing watts through it too

Once I’d added spacers to the fork, the long-reach stability and reasonably slack head angle meant I could pick ridiculous lines across cambers and root spreads, and be confident that the Fuel wouldn’t just hold them but cut inside them.

The modulation of the brakes increases confidence in sketchy situations and the well-damped, big-volume tyres and clean-tracking, accurately-controlled rear end take the edge off hits and stutter bumps too.

This all lets the Fuel EX carry serious straight-line speed through rowdy technical sections, in a way that reminded me of its 150mm-travel Remedy bigger brother.

Relatively low weight means the Trek feels encouragingly positive when you’re pushing watts through it too. The Eagle transmission is excellent, and combined with its efficient pedalling and easy roll, this means it’s an impressive technical climber, with epic-distance potential.

Even after extensive tuning, the fork never felt quite as accurate or composed as the Revelation on the similarly priced Whyte T-130 S.

I’d also fit a shorter stem to make it easier to flick the hard-charging chassis into corners and take front-end traction to the limit. But if you’re not into super-twitchy front ends and can get the fork sorted, the Fuel EX is an absolute hauler, whether you’re climbing super-tech pitches or charging through rock gardens.

Season:2018

The  Trek Fuel EX 8 27.5 Plus Mountain Bike 2018  returns with a major capability boost, with a complete redesign that incorporates more travel, a more aggressive geometry, and the ability to fit both 29" and 27.5+ wheels, making it the perfect go-to trail bike.

Alpha Platinum aluminium is continuously cold extruded and butted at multiple points, and hydroformed into sophisticated tube shapes for maximum streangth and minimum weight. The Straight Shot downtube design creates a straight connection to the steerer tube, leading to a lighter and stiffer frame with minimal material used. Complete with Knock Block technology, which is a keyed stem system that prevents the fork crown from damaging the frame.

Boost148/110 hub spacing creates stronger wheels, with shorter stays and more tyre clearance, allowing the  Trek Fuel EX 2018  to run with fast, momentum-preserving 29" wheels or the traction and stability of 27.5+ wheels. Additional features such as Control Freak Internal Cable Management, Mino Link Adjustable geometry & the Active Braking Pivot all help create a more refined ride that feels exactly how you want it to from the top of the mountain to the bottom.

The  Fuel EX  delivers a rugged, capable long-travel ride with the sprightly manners of an XC bike, blending the best of both worlds into one uncompromising package.

Trek Fuel EX 8 27.5 Plus 2018 Features

  • 130mm frame is more capable and 29" or 27.5+ compatible
  • Boost148/110: stronger wheels, more tyre clearance, shorter stays
  • Exclusive suspension tech with ABP and Full Floater
  • Straight Shot stiffness, Knock Block frame defence
  • Plus-sized tyres for extra traction and confidence on loose, rugged terrain

  • Fox Rhythm 34 Float fork
  • Fox Performance Float shock w/RE:akti
  • Bontrager sealed bearing hubs

Trek's trail bike gets an all-new frame with tweaked suspension and fresh geometry, but where does sit compared to the competition?

Forgiving, deep feeling suspension

It's a wizard on technical climbs

New geometry increases capabilities

It might be too forgiving for some riders

You'll be using the pedal assist lever often

Trek could have gone further with the geometry

The Trek Fuel EX 9.9 has redefined the do-everything mountain bike.

While this Trek Fuel EX 5 may look like a roller skate on wheels, complete with disco-tastic 'anthracite' metallic grey finish and chunky platform shoes reminiscent of the Spice Girls’ heyday, it does cover a particular niche between ‘trail’ and ‘cross-country’, and it does it very well on a respectable budget. Fork needs tweaking, but still a super-versatile, efficient and seriously hench high-speed hauler. Buy if you're looking for plenty of speed and a bike that can technical up and downs too

Massively-stiff, progressively-shaped frame

Shock and wheels breed free rough-terrain speed

Well-matched, very effective componentry for the money

2018 Fox Rhythm fork needs tuning to do the rest of the ride justice

Press-fit bottom brackets can wear fast

Take a look at the new Fuel EX and you will quickly see Trek has fully redefined the model. The 2016 Fuel Ex 29 was a step in the right direction, but it was a timid half-hearted step that left the rider wondering what if…? What if it came spec’d with a stiffer fork, more travel and a slacker headtube? The team at Trek delivered and the 2017 bike answers these questions. It now allows the use of 29” or 27.5+ wheels and is one of the stiffest frames in the category, featuring a totally new geometry that’s slacker and longer than its predecessor.
