We love an epic strain name as much as anybody else — but whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not, JMF doesn’t offer the level of potency you’re probably expecting.

Jedi Mind Fuck, sometimes called “Jedi Mind Trip,” or just JMF,  is a Psilocybe cubensis strain known for its exceptional potency — however, this doesn’t match the analytical data currently available on this mushroom.

It seems the claims this strain results in a “mind fuck” are a bit exaggerated. The strongest of four separate samples sent for testing places JMF within the standard range we consider average for this species of mushroom.

Nevertheless, many trip reports online for this mushroom suggest intense visual and auditory hallucinations and feelings of euphoria and introspection.

JMF is a stubborn strain to cultivate — they’re not as resistant to contamination as many beginner-friendly strains, and they’re much slower to fruit.

Like many cubes, there’s a lot of mystery around Jedi Mind Fuck’s origins.

In the Star Wars universe, the Jedi are a quasi-religious order of warrior monks who use the Force to maintain order and justice throughout the galaxy.

One of their iconic abilities is known as Jedi Mind Tricks . This is the ability to influence the thoughts and emotions of others without their awareness using the Force. 

Jedi Mind Fuck (JMF) shrooms are Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms inspired by this Star Wars concept for their powerful effects on the mind.

Some people link the unique name of this strain with its powerful hallucinations and profound reflective nature, which can feel so intense that the mushrooms seem to temporarily take over one’s mind and emotions.

As you can expect with a name like Jedi Mind Fuck, this strain hasn’t been around nearly as long as other strains like Golden Teacher (which grows native to Mexico) or Koh Samui (Thailand) and have been used by the indigenous people of those countries for centuries. It’s a newer strain that emerged in the early 2000s.

We found some conversations surrounding JMF being a genetic off-shoot from Z-Strain (another shroom with a questionable origin story). Other stories talk about a well-known mycologist named “Agar Joe” or “Myco Joe,” who was said to have found this mushroom growing in the wild in Georgia. He isolated the mushroom to gain stable spores that were as contamination resistant as possible. 

Of course, many people also believe that the myriad of cube strain names is another marketing ploy for newbies who want a bit of novelty. 

This debate is ongoing. 

Jedi Mind Fuck shrooms are not particularly potent compared to the average variety of Psilocybe cubensis .

Oakland Hyphae hosts The Psilocybin Cup every year, where cultivators enter the magic mushrooms they’ve grown to be sent for high-efficiency testing and ranked by potency. JMF notoriously scores pretty poorly in these competitions.

So far, four samples have been tested — resulting in an average psilocybin and psilocin content of just 0.50% and 0.04%, respectively. The total tryptamine concentration average is 0.64%.

For reference, we consider the average for Psilocybe cubensis to fall somewhere between 0.5% and 0.9%.

This is a very popular strain, so most vendors tend to carry it.

To grow your magic mushroom garden with Jedi Mind Fuck, source high-quality JMF spores from a reputable retailer and get a mushroom growing kit or DIY a set-up at a fraction of the cost.

These grow like any other cubensis strain and run about 2-3 flushes. What makes JMF tricky to work with is that it doesn’t appear to be as resistant to environmental contaminants as many beginner-friendly strains. 

This means you’ll need to be extra diligent when sanitizing your work area and tools to prevent bacteria from botching your efforts. Even with the best efforts, contamination will likely happen now and then. 

While the Jedi Mind Fuck will produce thick stems and large caps, it may take more time to appear, so it’s best to have more patience with this strain.

You may want to pick this strain just as its gills open up, as it has dark purple spores that can cover your crop and make it messy to handle.

With a name with Jedi Mind Fuck and a reputation for being a high-potency shroom, it’s a sought-after strain that can sometimes be difficult to source online.

You might want to try these other cubensis mushrooms that offer similar effects and are easier to grow for even the newest mushroom cultivators.

While its exact origins are a mystery, some mycologists believe it’s an isolation of the Z-Strain mushrooms due to striking similarities in appearance.

The origin of this strain is also a bit of a mystery, but one of the most plausible theories is its isolation from the Golden Teacher strain.

The Golden Teacher mushroom strain is the most recognized magic mushroom strain that’s believed to originate in the Gulf region of the United States and parts of Mexico.

It’s a well-rounded strain that proliferates and carries an average to high strength for a cubensis mushroom.

If you’re looking for cubensis spores that are easy to cultivate and grow fruit impressive in size, like Jedi Mind Fuck, the Amazon strain might be a good choice for you — though it’s not known to be nearly as potent as JMF.

The fall 2021 Psilocybin Cup results found that a sample of Lizard King mushrooms grown by Fungi Gun Gy had very similar PCB and PCN content to Jedi Mind Fuck shrooms.

It’s named after the mycologist, who goes by the online mushroom community handle “Lizard King,” who was said to have discovered the strain. The story goes that the mushroom was collected in Mexico and found growing on wood, which is unusual for Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms.

Many people use the terms “strain” and “species” interchangeably when referring to magic mushrooms, but there is actually a big difference between the two.

A species is a group of organisms that share the same genetic makeup . In other words, all members of a species are genetically identical, and more importantly, they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

Strains arise when samples within the same genetically identical species show phenotypical differences such as growth habits, chemical makeup, and physical traits. These differences can occur due to responses in the growing environment rather than differences in the genome (which would classify the samples as distinct species).

The term “strain” is often used in the plant and fungi kingdom, with species used frequently by humans to clarify the expected effects, preferred growing conditions, and physical traits.

There are hundreds of distinct strains of Psilocybe cubensis , and the numbers keep growing with mycologists discovering, isolating, and designing new strains to achieve desired traits. For example, some strains of the cubensis mushrooms have a stronger resistance to contaminants, some have higher psilocybin contents, and others grow in different sizes or colors.

While there does seem to be an overwhelming variety of cube strains to choose from when shopping for spores, many mushroom enthusiasts and mycologists debate the validity of some of these “designer spores strains.” 

Even with the Jedi Mind Fuck magic mushroom strain that has grown a reputation for higher-than-average potency, it doesn’t mean you’ll always get a strong shroom just by using the spores.

Mycologists explain that while mushroom strains may give you an idea of the expected growth and effects of a shroom, a strain can change every time someone new cultivates it. 

The mushroom’s growing conditions may be more important than genetics to ensure it reaches its highest potential for size and potency. 

There also seems to be a bulk of “new strains” appearing on the market that are just existing strains (commonly Golden Teacher) that are renamed as a marketing ploy.

The Jedi Mind-Fuck [i] [ii] is a Psilocybe cubensis strain that has become very popular based on its reputation for high potency—with a name like that, how could it not be super-potent?

Turns out, anybody can name anything anything. The Jedi Mind-Fuck is basically your average cube. Of course, and average cube is still something pretty special.

Identification and Description

Jedi Mind-Fuck looks like the vast majority of all other members of its species, with pale stalk and a golden-brown cap that starts out bell-shaped and then opens widely out. Some people say it tends to be a bit bigger than average, but cubes are generally pretty variable, so it’s hard to be sure.

There are stories about the origin of this strain, but they are undocumented and contradictory, with some people staying it was stabilized from a wild variant, and others saying it is descended from Z-Strain —which itself has a vague and undocumented origin story.

Basically, this is a cube.

The only cubes Jedi Mind-Fuck doesn’t look like are the really distinctive ones, like Penis Envy . There is no real way to tell that the mushroom you just bought is genuine JMF as opposed to some other generic-looking cube, except by trusting the seller. But since having a trustworthy seller (or growing your own) is an absolutely required safety precaution for any magic mushroom use, that’s not really a problem.

Do not harvest mushrooms from the wild thinking they “look just like Jedi Mind-Fuck.” Those aren’t the shrooms you’re looking for. While it’s true that Psilocybe cubensis grows wild in many places, including the southern part of the United States, there are lots of little, brownish mushrooms that you really won’t be able to tell apart unless you have real experience with wild mushroom identification. Whether there really are “easy, beginner mushrooms” is debatable, but Psilocybes are not it. Some of their look-alikes will do nothing other that possibly taste good, but others will kill you if you eat them—and poisoning from the little, brownish, but aptly-named Deadly Galerina is particularly hard to diagnose. And without the right diagnosis, you don’t stand a chance. Death takes about a week.

The effects of JMF are those of Psilocybe cubensis in general. There is no reliable evidence it is distinctive. But there are lots of trip reports claiming otherwise. What gives?

The thing is, mushroom trips are variable. Your physical state, your expectations, your mood going in, your surroundings, and other factors can all have a huge impact on where you go and how you get there. Most trip reports are reports of single trips–”I used this strain and here is what happened.” or perhaps “my boyfriends and I both took this strain and something similar happened to both of us.” There is no way to draw meaningful conclusions about the entire strain from just one or two experiences, even if you can find similar stories online.

A cube is a cube, with rare exception, and JMF probably is not an exception. All is does is change your mood, your perceptions, and your entire way of thinking, and if you are able to integrate and learn from the experience, it could change your life. Yeah, that’s it. Nothing special.

Potency and Dosage

Jedi Mind-Fuck has been tested for its psilocybin and psilocin content four times. All four times, it came up towards the low end of average. That’s why we don’t credit the claims of high potency—the numbers just aren’t there.

But you can still have a really intense trip, if that’s what you want. Just take a little more. An average cube is nothing to sneeze at. It’s still a cube!

Jedi Mind-Fuck is not a picky strain. While they prefer rye grain as a substrate , they will grow on virtually anything that normally works for cubes, by any method, Shoebox , PF Tek , Uncle Ben’s , what have you.

It is, though, a strain that is vulnerable to contamination and a bit slow to fruit. For these reasons, it is considered more of an experienced-grower’s strain, only likely to perform will for people whose sterile technique of bomb-proof.

Toxicity, Safety & Side Effects

Jedi Mind-Fuck, like any other source of psilocybin, has side effects. These range from trivial and common (excessive yawning) to very rare but very serious (convulsions). The more serious side effects get more likely at higher doses, and some are a particular problem at unexpectedly high doses, such as if you ate more than you intended to. You can minimize your risk of serious side effects by always erring on the side of too little rather than too much, and by following other safety procedures such as making sure you are mentally prepared going in. It’s also a good idea to have a companion who is not tripping and who can deal with any emergencies that come up. Psilocybin is not an especially dangerous way to alter the mind, it’s just not risk-free, and that must be respected.

Also, the stuff is illegal in most jurisdictions. Don’t get sent to prison.

J edi Mind Trip decidedly represents the ‘Gold Standard’ when it comes to the many groups throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region that perform a wide range of Classic Rock ‘n Roll guaranteed to pull fans to the clubs as well as the dance floor.  For nearly 20 years now group founder, frontman, and lead vocalist Dan Ardouin has managed to navigate the often precarious waters of the regional music scene by achieving the Triple Crown of group longevity, popularity, and economic viability, as witnessed by securing both Best Rock Band and Best Variety Band honors at this year’s 29 th Annual Review Music Awards, along with Best Rock Vocalist honors for Ardouin.

Over the years Jedi has featured the area’s top musicians within its ranks and gone through many reincarnations since the group first formed in 1996 and performed their first gig at the now defunct Cruiser’s on January 2, 1997.

With an original line up that featured Ardouin along with his two close friends Pete Schaller and Matt Hayes along with drummer Todd McMahan, today in addition to Ardouin & McMahan Jedi’s current line-up also features bassist Dave Mossner and guitarist/keyboardist Mark Shelley in the mix. And to underscore the levels of their professionalism, recently ex-Verve Pipe co-founder Donny Brown started drumming for the group on Thursdays, where they regularly perform at The Stables each week.

When asked why Jedi has enjoyed such prolonged success, Ardouin first cites his ability to hire good musicians “But in addition to that I think another reason the band has endured over the years is because I run it kind of like a dictatorship,” he smiles. “It’s very hard to be in a band where four or five people are trying to drive the ship. I decided a long time ago that democracy doesn’t work in a band. It can be democratic, but all the stars have to align together; and even then you need a leader.

Indeed, this is a valid point when one considers that even a band as legendary and groundbreaking as The Beatles went through periods where either John Lennon or Paul McCartney would take turns leading and guiding the group.

“Another important factor in our success is making the right decisions,” reflects Dan. “I did the bar scene as long as I could, but started hitting a cap in terms of money and compensation that turned into a brick wall of sorts. That’s when we made the decision to start performing more weddings and focusing upon festivals around the state. We set a bottom line in terms of what it takes to book us; and while we still do play bars, weddings and festivals form the bulk of our schedule. It’s funny because my fan base has grown and now we have their kids showing up to gigs saying ‘My parents love you!’  Now I’m that guy in the band,” he laughs.

Does Dan see a shelf life or end-point for the band in terms of their ability to continue performing, coupled with the ongoing rigors of performing all over the state?  “Yeah, that will happen when I can’t sing anymore; because age has nothing to do with it.  I was the house band at Rick’s in East Lansing for seven years; and when I decided to graduate from Rick’s I went on to do this for 12 years at the Hamilton St. Pub. At some point you simply have to graduate. Some of the last times we played there I started out playing songs like Jesse’s Girl, which he had played 12 years earlier when we first began; and all these 18-20 year olds knew all the words.   What that told me is that people are still going to love these songs that we perform because they are staples of any classic rock collection.”

In terms of their song selection, Dan says the group performs 80 percent of what they should play and slips 20 percent of what they want to play into their performance on any given night. “I once tried to write originals, but that isn’t a priority for me,” explains Dan.

“Honestly, I never put the time into it. I knew that in order to write a good song you had to put all of your time into it. There was a period where I hired some guys from Detroit into Jedi and then performed originals in their band, so was working in two separate directions. But I learned then it’s all or nothing. You can’t write originals and try to make it. If you want to do that route you can’t stay in your backyard, but need to travel to the bigger markets. I knew you had to exert due diligence and spend time writing a bunch of songs and then throwing them away because they weren’t good enough. I never had that bridge to get over creatively. I can write a riff, but now I’m at a point where I’m good knowing that what I do best is what I’m currently doing because I can do it really well.”

“It still comes down to entertainment. I love all the original acts around, but as I noted earlier, I never had that bridge of creativity. Mark Shelley and Andy Reed and many other prolific writers populate this region, but I never really cultivated or tried to hone that talent. I prefer to stick with what I’m good at.”

An important component of the professionalism that Jedi Mind Trip embodies is their work ethic. Although they shine at performing cover songs, they constantly keep their sets updated. “We have about 150 songs to draw upon, but probably only 70 that we pick from,” he explains. “But we constantly do learn new old songs,” he smiles.

Has Dan noticed much of a change in terms of audience response over the years and through different generations of fans? “Yeah, you’ve got to keep them on the dance floor,” he states. “Younger generations are still engaged with live music, which I can tell from the number of weddings we book. I’m not playing to 18 -20 year olds at the Pub or Rick’s anymore, but the fact young kids are booking us to play their weddings tells me they would prefer a live musical experience over a D.J.”

In term of their schedule, Jedi Mind Trip usually performs three nights a week every week. “Maybe three weeks out of the year we take some nights off,” notes Dan, “but recently I also started a Production Company and will be handling the sound for the Concert Series at Tittabawassee Township Park this summer. I’ve built a sound system over the years and keep adding to it, so Joe Christensen will be running it and we’re calling the new company Jedi Mind Trip Productions. We have a PA system that we can fly along with trusses and JBL’s – all top quality equipment.”

In addition to summer festivals and private parties, Jedi Mind Trip can be seen at The Stables in Bay City every Thursday, along with regular gigs at the Wil-lew and the BOB in Grand Rapids. Additionally they perform regularly at the Little River and various other casinos throughout Michigan and Ohio.  Dan says the largest crowd the band has performed before was the Party on McCarty last summer, where they drew 5,000 fans.

Finally, does it get easier as the years move along and what’s the most challenging thing about keeping a band like Jedi together?  “Yeah, it does get easier,” confesses Dan. “I’ve got this down to a science. Our trailer is all neatly packed and we’re at a pretty cool place right now. Every line-up that Jedi ever featured has possessed its strengths, and we’ve had a million different line-ups, but right now I feel that Todd, Dave, Mark and I are firing on all cylinders.”

“Musically, there’s nothing we can’t do.”
