The Best Times to Visit Greece for Good Weather, Fewer Crowds, and Affordable Prices

High, low, and shoulder seasons all have their advantages.

cheapest time to visit greece

Alessandra Amodio

Greece has long beckoned travelers with its crystalline waters, rich historical sites, and delicious cuisine. One of the best times to visit is in late spring or early fall to avoid the summer crowds and soaring temperatures. Here's an overview of the main tourist seasons:

  • High Season:  July to August
  • Shoulder Seasons:  April to June and September to October
  • Low Season:  November to March

There are advantages to visiting year-round. The peak summer months are best for a classic coastal vacation spent swimming in the sea and dining in outdoor tavernas, while the low season offers a glimpse of local life as well as more affordable rates. Winter is also the rainy season in Greece, but it can be a good time for a cultural getaway with fewer crowds at museums and archaeological sites.

Ready to plan your trip? These are the best times to visit Greece no matter your priorities.

Michela Buttignol/Travel+Leisure

Best Times to Visit Greece for Smaller Crowds

Unsurprisingly, the most popular time to visit Greece stretches from late spring to early fall, when the warm weather draws beach-goers and island-hoppers. According to CEIC data , fewer than one million people visit Greece each month between November and March, compared to more than six times that number in August. So if you're not planning to hit the beaches, you'll encounter far fewer crowds if you visit in winter.

While the weather is cooler from November to March (average temperatures hover between the mid-40s and the low 60s), it can be a pleasant time to explore ancient ruins such as those at Delphi and contemporary art galleries and museums in Athens . Note, however, that many tourist venues and hotels close for the winter, particularly in the Greek islands , and there's a higher chance of rain between November and March.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Good Weather

If you're after warm weather but want to avoid extreme heat, May and September are among the best months to go to Greece. The country is relatively large, so temperatures vary, but in May, the average temperature in Athens ranges from a high of 77 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 59. Mountainous areas like Mount Olympus are typically cooler. In June, the average high warms up to the mid-80s — perfect for swimming in the sea.

Summer can be sweltering, with average highs in the 90s in Athens, though the Greek islands tend to be cooler, in the high 70s and 80s. By October, average highs dip into the 60s and low 70s. Yes, it's cool, but nowhere near cold enough to feel uninviting. Winter is the rainiest season in Greece.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Lower Prices

You're likely to save money on a trip to Greece if you travel during the winter low season. According to Skyscanner , the cheapest month to fly to Greece is November. You can typically find the best airfare by booking your flight within one to two months of your scheduled departure.

Hotels tend to be pricey during July and August, so avoid these peak months if you're looking for lower room rates. It's worth noting that prices increase slightly during Greek Orthodox Easter, which sometimes falls at the end of April. The end of December and the beginning of January see a similar spike.

Worst Times to Visit Greece

There's no bad time to visit Greece, but July and August can be uncomfortably hot and humid, especially in Athens. The capital city and Cycladic islands (including Mykonos and Santorini) are also at their most crowded and expensive during these months, so it's best to avoid midsummer if you're looking for more elbow room, lower prices, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Conversely, winter temperatures can dip as low as the 40s in Greece and it's also the wettest season. While the cool weather is fine for exploring historical sites, shops, and museums, it's too chilly to swim in the ocean, and some hotels and attractions in resort areas may close.

Cheapest Time To Go To Greece – How To Visit On A Budget

The cheapest time to go to Greece is outside summer, which is the peak tourist season. Here are some tips to travel to Greece if you are on a budget.

Best time to visit Greece

Cheapest time to travel to Greece and the Greek islands

Greece can be a very affordable country. Yet, some people return from their Greek holiday having spent much more than they expected.

These travelers may have only visited the most upscale destinations in Greece, during high season. And it’s true – prices in places like Mykonos and Santorini can be very high.

Cheapest time to visit Greece - Santorini

I’m Greek and have been exploring my country for many decades. While I agree that there are cheaper countries to visit, I still believe that Greece can be very budget-friendly.

In fact, even the most expensive islands in Greece can be very affordable if you are able to visit outside the high season.

Here are some tips on how to explore more of Greece without breaking the bank.

When is the peak season in Greece?

The peak season for Greece is between June and September. Due to the warm weather and absence of rain, it’s the best season to go to the beach, and swimming is delightful.

Summer is a popular time to visit Greece

During high season, everywhere in Greece gets busier. Tourists arrive from all over the world to spend some time on popular islands, like Mykonos , Santorini , Milos , Rhodes , Corfu and Crete.

The most expensive months in terms of accommodation prices are July and August . This is the time when most people, including Greeks, can take time off to travel. Even with the higher prices, many hotels around the country can be fully booked.

My suggestion: If you have a choice, skip Greece in August. It can get too hot, busy and overpriced, especially in the popular islands.

June and September are still warm, but they are typically less crowded and cheaper. Overall, it will be easier to find accommodation, even last minute.

Celebrating Greek Easter in Greece

Greek Easter is another relatively expensive time to visit Greece, as it’s our most important public holiday. While many Greeks go to their villages to celebrate the Easter Week, others take advantage to explore more of the country for a few days.

Places like Patmos and Corfu have very unique Greek Easter traditions , and can get popular during the Holy week. The most expensive days for accommodation are Good Friday and the Easter weekend.

Cheapest time to visit Greece - March, May and June

Note that Greek Easter is celebrated according to the Greek calendar. As a rule, it rarely coincides with the Catholic or Protestant Easter.

Outside Greek Orthodox Easter, spring is generally cheap in terms of accommodation. It’s a fantastic time to visit, as you will avoid crowds, and you will see tons of blooming flowers among the ancient ruins throughout the country.

Christmas and New Year’s in Greece

Accommodation prices in certain areas of Greece may go up during Christmas and New Year’s , though not nearly as much as in other European countries.

This is more likely to affect the main cities and some popular areas on the mountains, rather than the islands. As an example, Kalambaka town near the Meteora Monasteries is a popular place to visit in winter.

Have a look at these other Greek celebrations and festivals throughout the year.

Best time to travel to Greece – International and domestic flights

Greece has several dozens of airports. Many of them are international, which means that there are direct flights from abroad. In summer, there are hundreds of seasonal routes, many of them reaching the Greek islands.

Flight prices vary a lot, depending on the airlines and the time of the year. Generally speaking, flights tend to be more expensive in summer and around Christmas and Greek Easter.

Greece travel - There are many year round flights

You can often find low airfares if you check a few months in advance of your trip. Low-cost companies are often the cheapest, but make sure you check all airlines.

If you want to take a domestic flight within Greece, try to book your ticket as early as possible. Last minute tickets tend to be very expensive, especially for popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini .

This list of Greek islands with airport will help you when planning your trip. Many visitors book combinations of flights to arrive on one island, and return home from Athens, or from another island.

Ferry travel within Greece

Ferry travel is a common way to reach the Greek islands and travel between them. While certain islands have airports, in many cases it’s much more practical to take a ferry.

Ferry routes vary widely throughout the year. During peak season, there are more ferries running between the islands. There are different types of ferries – the fastest ones, which run on routes in the Aegean Sea, cost significantly more.

Cheapest way to travel to the Greek islands - Take a ferry

Ferry tickets have the same price year-round, even if you book them last minute. However, if you are travelling during peak season, it’s best to plan ahead and book them in advance, as certain ferries can get sold out.

I use Ferryscanner to compare ferry companies and book ferry tickets. It’s a popular search engine where you can book up to ten consecutive ferry journeys.

Sometimes, you might find discounted ferry tickets. These are mostly available for the off-peak months. They are often non-refundable and non-transferable, so make sure you are happy before you book them.

Cheapest time to go to Athens Greece

Athens is a year round destination. As such, you can always find affordable accommodation, though prices may fluctuate a little between summer and winter.

Summer temperatures in the Acropolis can get high

International flights to Athens tend to be more expensive during summer. If you only want to visit Athens for a short city break, look into off-season months.

You will generally get much better flight prices for October, often excluding the Oxi Day , November, March or April. Winter months will typically be even cheaper, apart from the time around Christmas and New Year’s.

Many people come to Athens to visit the museums and ancient sites. You will be delighted to know that entrance tickets to all public museums and monuments are reduced from November until March. In addition, entrance is free on the first Sunday of those months.

You might want to check my guide to some free museums in Athens .

Is the off-season a good time of year to visit Athens?

If you’ve found a cheap flight to Athens in January or February, go ahead and book it. Athens is buzzing in winter, and you are likely to get pleasant weather on at least some days.

Generally speaking, winters in the Greek capital are a lot milder than Northern European winters. Still, we may have all four seasons. Thunderstorms are not uncommon, and you don’t want to be walking around the slippery Acropolis marbles under pouring rain – trust me on this!

April, May, September and October are great months to visit Athens

Generally speaking, January and February are the coldest months in Athens – it even snows on some years.

Here is my article on the best time to visit Athens , including information on weather, festivals and special events for each month.

Cheapest time to go to the Greek islands

Greece has hundreds of islands. Apart from the popular ones, there are some others that you may have never heard of, like Andros , Iraklia , Kimolos , Nisyros or Kasos . This introduction to Greek islands  should help.

If you are going to the islands, or to any beach destinations in mainland Greece, the cheapest time to go to Greece is outside the summer season.

Generally speaking, spring, autumn and winter months are a lot cheaper in terms of accommodation. While some of the restaurants might be closed, the ones that are open will cater for locals, and will typically be very affordable.

Cheapest time to go to Greece - Andros island

Most visitors find the weather a lot more pleasant in June and September rather than in high season. So, unless the only time you can take a holiday is in August, visit Greece in September instead.

Let’s take, for example, Santorini. Accommodation prices in July and August can be exorbitant, especially if you want to stay in a hotel with a view to the volcano. The vast majority of rooms would be over 200 euros per night, and this is if you are booking well in advance.

By comparison, if you visit Santorini in March, April or October, you could easily find good value rooms. Prices drop further in winter, which is the off-season.

And before you dismiss winter, it’s actually an interesting time to visit Santorini if you want to avoid the crowds. Here’s my personal experience on visiting Santorini in winter .

Also, here are a few more tips on how to visit Santorini on a budget .

Is the off-season a good time of year to visit the Greek islands?

The Greek islands can be very interesting in the off-season. However, if your main plan is to go swimming and enjoy the beach, do not come between November and March.

While some visitors still swim in November or December, most people will not find it pleasant. In addition, there aren’t as many sailing tours in the off-season – you’d get a much wider selection in summer.

Cheapest time to go to Greece - Sailing trip

You should also consider daylight hours. Sunset in winter is around 17:30, while in summer it’s between 20:00 and 21:00, so there are more chances for daytime activities.

Another issue with the Greek islands in winter is that there isn’t as much to do as in summer. The main exceptions are the bigger, more populated islands, like Rhodes, Crete and Corfu. These are still lively in winter, and there’s a lot happening despite the relatively bad weather.

However, smaller islands pretty much close down. So if nightlife and a wide selection of tavernas are your top priority, avoid the off-season.

Finally, travelling to the islands in winter isn’t always straightforward. Many of the charter flights cease operation, and there are fewer ferries.

Cheapest time to go to Greece - Hiking from Fira to Oia in Santorini

As a conclusion, think what your priorities are when planning a trip to a Greek island. If you are budget-conscious, try late April, May or early / mid October.

These months are ideal for anyone who wants to hike, see the archaeological sites or just to relax. Accommodation will be cheaper, you will avoid the scorching sun while still having good weather, and the locals will have more time and energy to talk to you!

Read more here: Hottest Greek islands to visit in October .

Cheapest time to go on a roadtrip around Greece

A fantastic way to explore more of Greece is to go on a roadtrip. The Peloponnese and the Western coast of Greece are fairly seasonal destinations in terms of accommodation costs.

Just like the islands, they are quite busy in summer, and prices tend to go up.

Cheapest time to go to Greece - A forest

Depending on the area you are visiting, accommodation in these areas can be much cheaper if you are going between October and March.

During the off-season, you should be able to find rooms and apartments starting at 40-50 euro, while in summer the same apartments would cost a lot more, perhaps double the price.

Is the off-season a good time of the year to take a roadtrip around Greece?

Again, if your main plan is to go swimming, avoid the winter months. That said, the climate in the Peloponnese is fairly mild, so many locals swim all year round.

If, on the other hand, you just want to explore, go hiking and visit the numerous ancient sites and villages, the off-season is probably better.

Cheapest time to go to Greece - Peloponnese in spring

Be aware that places up on the mountains can get really cold and damp in winter. If you are renting a car, the law states that you will need to have snow chains in your car between October and April. Make sure you discuss this with your car rental company.

As for the Western coast of Greece, the average temperatures won’t be as mild as in the Peloponnese. Again, if swimming is a priority, it’s best to plan your trip by October at the latest.

Here is more information about driving in Greece . And if you want to find a rental car, have a look at the Discover Cars platform , where you can book a vehicle for your vacation.

FAQs about the cheapest time to visit Greece

Here are a few more tips about the cheapest times of year to visit Greece:

What is the best month to go to Greece?

In my opinion, the best month to go to Greece is late May, June and September. The weather is milder with many sunny days, there are fewer tourist crowds, and accommodation prices are reasonable.

End of summer in Greece

I know that many people visit in July and August, but this is often because it’s the only time they can go on a vacation! I personally avoid the Greek islands in August as much as I can!

If swimming is not a top priority, you will also love April, October and November. I find April too cold to go swimming, but I blame my Greek genes 🙂

How much does it cost to go to Greece for a week?

This reminds me of the question “how long is a piece of string”! Regardless, here is some insight, based on my summer trips in Greece in the past five years.

From the above, you may have guessed that we travel outside the peak season of July and August. As such, we can easily find accommodation for around 45-50 euro / night for a couple. We’ve even had self-catering studios for 25 euro!

Beach in Ios island Greece

A meal at a regular taverna for two people can cost anywhere from 30 euro upwards. I’d say an average price for two is around 35-50 euro. Obviously, this would not apply for gourmet restaurants in Mykonos or Santorini.

Ferry ticket prices vary a lot. We tend to use the larger, slower ferries, as they are not only cheaper, but also better to travel on if the weather is windy. A passenger ticket from Piraeus port to one of the islands generally costs around 40 euro upwards.

All in all, we normally spend about 50 euro per person per day travelling in Greece. It is definitely possible to bring this number down if you stay at campsites or avoid tavernas and do more self-catering.

So, to answer the question, you can easily spend a week in Greece for under 500 euro per person, excluding your airfare. All it takes is some research and a bit of careful planning.

How much does an average trip to Greece cost?

In my opinion, there is no average trip to Greece, as every visitor has their own itinerary.

Mykonos and Santorini, which are often included in Greek vacations, are among the most expensive destinations in Greece, so they will increase the cost. If you are budget-conscious, there are many other Greek islands that are a lot cheaper.

Mykonos Greece

In addition, activities like private tours or sailing trips are likely to be pricey. As an example, a day trip from Mykonos to Ancient Delos can cost over 50 euro. A winery tour in Santorini can be over 100 euro.

Still, if you can only visit Greece once in your life, all of these are worth booking. After all, the memories will last forever!

What is the cheapest Greek island to visit?

I have not been to all Greek islands yet! But I’m working towards it 🙂

Two of the famous Greek islands that I’ve found to be the most budget-friendly are Crete and Naxos, in the Cyclades. I can absolutely recommend both islands for beaches, sightseeing, culture, people, and the fantastic Greek food !

Enjoy Greek food at every season

You can reach Chania or Heraklion airports in Crete from many European countries. Naxos has a small local airport. You can either take a domestic flight from Athens, or use one of the numerous ferries.

Can I explore Greece on a budget?

Based on our experience travelling around Greece as a couple, it is possible to see Greece with a budget of about 50 euro per person per day, even beyond the shoulder seasons.

Have a look at this article where I broke down our costs for one month of travelling in June 2021: Is Greece expensive . We managed to stick to the same budget, more or less, in 2022.

Granted, fuel, accommodation and food prices have gone up since then. Still, most areas in Greece are very affordable.

Cheapest time to go to Greece – Conclusions

I hope this article has shed some light on the cheapest time to go to Greece! If I could sum up my best advice, here’s what I would suggest:

  • Avoid July and August , which is also the time when the meltemi winds blow in the Aegean. Visit Greece in April, May, June, September, October or even November. The shoulder season is the best time to come if you want some beach weather.
  • Skip the most popular destinations . Do not visit Mykonos and Santorini – go to less famous islands instead. Or go to the mainland, and include Peloponnese in your trip to Greece.
  • Book your flights, accommodation and ferry tickets well in advance .

Whatever you decide, have a great time!

I L ❤️ V E your reports and look forward to them all the time …. You are so Insightful and alway REMIND me of just why it is I LOVE GREECE as much as I do … I moved there last year in September, and continue to work in The UK. I was first in Athens and then moved to Souvala on Aegina, which was definitely not my wisest choice, too quiet and isolated, especially without a car … Also as you say, August was UNBEARABLE … Definitely will work during August … 🤭 It dimmed my passion somewhat, and I have been thinking of leaving, but EVERY TIME I read your Wonderful Newsletter, I feel maybe, just not yet …. 😊 You are right, it takes careful planning. I am returning in January to clear my apartment on Aegina, and put it into storage in Athens … Have A Wonderful Week.

Kind regards,

Yes August can be a pain in the tourist areas – which is why I don’t go away myself 🙂 I’m sure you will find another place to live for a few months, or a year, or… who knows really? Get in touch when you are in Athens in January, and let’s go for a coffee!

These Are the Best Times to Visit Greece

Anthony Grant

Finally ready for that dream trip to Greece ? With a coastline longer than the United Kingdom's and thousands of islands, the country is a great place to visit any time of year. But absent a last-minute flight deal (and they do come up, though nonstop options from the US are still limited), planning ahead is the way to go in order to make the most of your time in Greece.

The urban attractions of Athens thrum at full tilt all year long, while most Greek islands are at their best once winter has left the picture. Whether it's sultry Mediterranean breezes you seek or the cheapest time to book that hotel room with a sea view in Mykonos, consider this your essential guide to planning a perfect trip to Greece.

The Best Weather in Greece

cheapest time to visit greece

Generally, the best weather in Greece is what you'll experience in May, June and September. Plenty of sunny days that aren't too hot make May an ideal time for long, leisurely walks in Athens. By June, the beaches of the Aegean islands are warm enough for swimming and popular islands like Mykonos aren't crowded yet.

July is when things get toasty and sometimes uncomfortably humid in Athens, and the city is crowded with tourists then, too. August, naturally, means great beach weather, and if you like your big cities to yourself then it's also a fine time for Athens, as most Athenians ditch the capital.

September has lots of advantages (namely: fewer tourists), but the days are still long and warm and better yet, it's less humid than in July and August. In Crete, the southernmost Greek island, you can go swimming well into October.

The Best Times to Visit Cities in Greece

The two biggest cities in Greece are the capital, Athens , and Thessaloniki. Both are destinations in their own right and for culture vultures there is really no bad time to go. In the peak summer season, major attractions in Athens such as the Acropolis Museum are more crowded than in wintertime, when on many days you'll have even iconic places like the Acropolis largely to yourself. Winter in Athens is also a great time to check out lesser-known museums, tune up your Instagram or warm up in a luxe Turkish bath .

cheapest time to visit greece

Generally speaking, think of April to June as the ideal times to explore Athens and other Greek cities including historic Nafplio. Thessaloniki is a vibrant city with a wealth of cultural attractions, but in the height of summer it gets so humid they actually have public fans in places to keep the air circulating.

Choose shoulder season months like October and May for an optimal experience there. Most island towns are empty of tourists from November until around the time of Greek Easter, but the main town in Corfu and the Cretan cities like Heraklion are up and running all year long.

When to Visit Greece for Events

From religious holidays to cultural festivals, there are plenty of events worth attending throughout the year.

Spring Events

Greek Orthodox Easter is the most important holiday in the Greek calendar by far. In 2019, Greek Easter falls on Sunday, April 28, but festivities actually begin the week prior on the Saturday of Lazarus. Easter is celebrated in different ways throughout the country, with many variations on the candlelit processions of Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebrations themselves — but you can count on plenty of lamb roasts and fireworks. Easter in Corfu is one of the most famous, but wherever you are in Greece during this time you can expect to experience at least some of the country's very rich and colorful Easter traditions.

Summer Events

Summer is when most music and arts festivals are in full swing. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival is the country's most prestigious annual summer arts festival, with events taking place at the ancient stone Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater (the Herodion) below the Acropolis as well as south of Athens at the amphitheater of Epidaurus, the best-preserved theater of the ancient world. Events include a mix of classic and contemporary (last summer, Bill Murray recited poetry in the Herodion) and are usually scheduled from late June to early August.

On the day of the August Full Moon Festival in Athens, museums and ancient sites are open in the evening free of charge until midnight.

Assumption is Aug. 15. It's a public holiday in Greece and considered the "Summer Easter." On this day, life in Athens pretty much grinds to a halt as Athenians dash off to the countryside or the islands. If you want to make sure you have a good place to stay anywhere outside of Athens on Aug. 15 or in the two weeks following, it's increasingly essential that you plan and reserve ahead of time.

Fall Events

The prestigious Thessaloniki International Film Festival is usually held during the first part of November. And while they're not exactly going to enrich anybody in cultural terms, Black Friday shopping events in November have recently taken Greeks by storm.

Winter Events

Christmas in Greece is nowhere near as big a deal as Greek Easter, but there are festive lights in the center of big cities like Athens. Also in Athens, New Year's Eve means festive fireworks over the Acropolis.

The Best Times to Explore the Greek Islands

The best times to visit mykonos and santorini.

What ultimately draws visitors to Santorini is the views over the volcanic caldera and not the beaches, and that appeal has fueled the island's rise as a year-round destination. May and June are the best times to dodge the crowds but also enjoy some sun. Otherwise, it's probably better to wait until after mid-September.

Mykonos is a bit trickier: in May and June (and again in September) you'll have more elbow room at the island's many beaches and posh beach bars, but to get a taste of the international razzle dazzle for which the place is most famous, July and August do rock to that inimitable Mediterranean island vibe. But it's also a very expensive vibe. Unlike in Santorini, by the end of September it's already very quiet again in Mykonos.

The Best Times to Visit Other Islands

Whether it's Corfu in the Ionian Islands, Rhodes and Patmos in the Dodecanese archipelago, Paros and the other islands that make up the Cyclades or Crete, the best time of year for an island visit is generally going to be in June, July or September. Prices are lower and hotel rooms are more readily available in June and September, and you can count on warm weather in those months, too.

Loads of Greeks and other Europeans on summer holiday can make island travel in August a real challenge — and sometimes a downright headache. And many islands have their off-season charms: For example, the Saronic Islands near Athens like Hydra and Aegina are easy and fun to visit any time of year (but beach time is mainly May through September).

When to Visit Greece to Avoid Crowds

The tourism season in Greece typically gets going after Greek Easter, with shoulder season ramping up in May and the peak season stretching from the latter part of June into July and all of August. Increasingly, in places like Athens and Crete, September is now considered a high season month.

If you want to avoid crowds in Athens, time your summer travel for June or August instead of July. In the Cycladic archipelago (which includes Mykonos and Santorini), avoid July and August unless you don't mind crowded ferries and higher prices.

In Crete, you can expect crowds at many beaches and in the cities of Heraklion and Chania from June right up until October, so consider June or early fall for Crete. By contrast, in Corfu where the beach season is not quite as long as in Crete, you'll have an easier time avoiding crowds in September.

Winter in Athens tends to be cold and damp, but there are still many sunny days and exploring museums and ancient ruins in the absence of crowds and big tour groups can be quite cool.

The Cheapest Times to Visit Greece

cheapest time to visit greece

Traveling to Greece is usually priciest during peak season, so if you're looking to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons. The best hotel deals in Athens are going to be from early January through March, but weather is not at its best at that time. You can generally find good hotel deals in April, May, the first part of June and sometimes in September (but less so in Crete).

The shoulder seasons in Greece run from April through the first part of June, and then from about mid-September through mid-October.

Affordable Airfare

Unsurprisingly, airfare is at its most expensive during the summer. July, specifically, is the priciest month when, according to the farecasting app Hopper, long-haul flight prices are around $1,090 round-trip. In May, that dips to $930 round-trip. But during the shoulder seasons and in winter, prices plunge accordingly.

Currently, all American airlines offer only seasonal nonstop flights to Athens and they tend to be expensive, but there's often a workaround. Find a cheap ticket to either London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW) and then find a flight that fits your schedule with Greek carrier Aegean : a Star Alliance member with several flights a day from London to Athens International Airport (ATH). Plus, you'll typically get better service than you would from the British low-cost carriers, plus meals are included.

Affordable Hotels

cheapest time to visit greece

The most expensive time to book a hotel room in Athens is generally in the summer. The cheapest times are January (after the New Year holiday) and February. The most expensive time to book rooms in popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini is July and especially August.

According to Booking.com , based on bookings made between January 2018 and December 2018, hotels in Athens are 33% more affordable in February than compared to the most expensive month of the year, which (for Booking.com ) is June. Hotels in Santorini in January are 51% more affordable than they are in August, and for Mykonos, March is 73% more affordable than August.

If you're planning to visit Mykonos in the summer, you should plan ahead as much as possible and if you find a deal (paid or points), grab it. Expect hotels on many Greek islands — not just Mykonos and Santorini but also ones like Syros and Sifnos — to be completely sold out over the Aug. 15 Assumption holiday and do not assume you'll be able to find a deal, or anything really, on the spot during that extremely busy time.

In Crete's largest city of Heraklion as well as elsewhere on the island, the high season now effectively runs through the whole month of September, making it wise to book ahead in Crete even for early fall travel.

Greece is a bucket-list destination for many travelers. This Mediterranean country offers incredible historical sites like the Acropolis, iconic views in places like Santorini, and lively nightlife in Mykonos, along with plenty of art, culture, and breathtaking scenery throughout the country.

A question many people ask is: “What’s the best time to visit Greece?” While there’s no definitive answer to this question, there are some guidelines you may want to follow based on what you’re looking for (great weather, no crowds, etc.).

In this post, we’ll go over the benefits and drawbacks of visiting Greece in each season and look at the best times to visit based on your interests.

Map of Greece

Greece is located in southeastern Europe, boarded by Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Türkiye. While you may be familiar with some of the country’s more famous islands like Crete, Santorini, and Mykonos, there are actually thousands of islands scattered throughout the Ionian and Aegean Seas, giving the country one of the longest coastlines in the world.

Greece thrived in ancient times and is often called the cradle of Western civilization. Perhaps its most famous landmark is the Acropolis , which includes the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. These sites have enormous architectural and historical significance and can draw 16,000 visitors in a single day .

Greece has a Mediterranean climate, meaning it’s hot and dry in the summer and cool and wet in the winter. During the summer, it can be very hot and there’s little rainfall. Summer heat in Greece is no joke — Athens is often cited as the hottest capital city in Europe. In the winter, northern and mountainous regions can see snow while southern islands remain mild.

Hot Tip: The currency in Greece is the euro, so be sure to have some handy. We also recommend using a credit card without foreign transaction fees whenever possible.

Greece in the spring

Spring (March, April, May)

If you’re looking for mild weather and smaller crowds, consider visiting Greece in the spring. April and May are great times to visit as long as the beach isn’t the first priority on your to-do list (it’s still a little chilly for the beach during these months). Average daytime temperatures range from about 60 degrees in March to about 77 degrees in May.

Most of the Greek Islands are fully open by May for the summer tourism season.

Holy Week and Easter (March or April, depending on the year) are important times in the country, so you may see prices increase during these events.

  • Apokries (February or March)
  • Orthodox Easter and Holy Week (March or April)
  • Salsa Spring Festival (May)

Summer (June, July, August)

Zakynthos Greece

It probably comes as no surprise that summer is the most popular time to visit Greece . Unfortunately, this also means it’s the most crowded time in Greece.

July and especially August are the hottest and busiest months in the country. If you’re planning on visiting historical sites in Athens or popular islands like Santorini or Mykonos, be prepared for extreme heat and huge crowds.

Average daily temperatures range from about 86 degrees to 90 degrees, but it’s not uncommon to see days that exceed 100 degrees.

  • Athens Epidaurus Festival (all summer)
  • Kalamata International Dance Festival  (July)
  • Rockwave Festival (July)
  • Olympus Festival  (July to August)
  • Sani Festival (July to August)
  • Vovousa Festival (July to August)
  • Molyvos International Music Festival (August)

Hot Tip: If you enjoy unique accommodations, check out these boutique hotels in Athens .

Fall (September, October, November)

Mykonos Greece

Early fall — especially September — can be a great time to visit Greece since it’s still warm but crowds start to thin once kids are back in school.

September has an average daily temperature of 83 degrees, but after that, cooler days start to appear. The average daily temperature in October is 73 degrees and it drops to 64 degrees in November.

While October might be a little too cool for swimming, it’s a wonderful time for sightseeing. The rainy season starts around the end of September, so keep that in mind when you’re visiting Greece in the fall. And don’t forget to pack a travel umbrella or rain poncho !

  • Athens International Film Festival (September to October)
  • Athens Marathon. The Authentic  (November)
  • Thessaloniki International Film Festival (November)

Winter (December, January, February)

Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens Greece

Winter is the low season in Greece , with crowds and costs at a minimum beginning in November all the way until March. Many tourist attractions have shorter hours and some islands can even close for the whole season.

Winter can actually be a decent time to visit Athens, though. While the weather can be chilly, it’s not frigid, with average daily temperatures hovering around 55 degrees. There are lots of Christmas festivities throughout the city in December, making it a fun time to visit the capital.

Popular attractions like the Acropolis will be less crowded during the winter and it can also be a great time for cheaper airfare and hotel prices. According to Google Travel , December is the least expensive month to visit Greece.

The Best Time To Visit the Greek Islands

Greece is known for its islands. The best times to visit the Greek Islands are the summer months of June and July . August is a popular month to visit but it can be incredibly crowded. Some islands are also great to visit as early as April or May and as late as September.

Generally, winter is not a great time to visit the Greek Islands. The weather can be cold and wet and many hotels, restaurants, and shops shut down for the season. This is especially true on the smaller islands. Ferry schedules are also reduced during winter, so travel between the islands can be more difficult.

Hot Tip: No matter what month you visit, you can use points and miles to fly to Greece .

The Best Time To Visit Mykonos

The best times to visit Mykonos are the late spring or early fall . During these times, temperatures are still warm, but it’s less crowded and hotel prices are lower.

Of course, if you’re after the iconic summer beach-party vibe the island is known for, you’ll need to brace yourself for heat and crowds if you visit during the popular summer months of June, July, and August. The summer weather is hot, dry, and windy with average temperatures peaking around 84 degrees in July and August. August also tends to be the most crowded month so try to avoid traveling then if you can.

It’s possible to visit Mykonos during the winter . The weather, while unpredictable, is relatively mild, with low temperatures only dipping into the upper 40s.

While you’ll avoid crowds and pay less for your trip, keep in mind that many restaurants, shops, and attractions may be closed and ferry service can be limited. However, if you’re interested in strolling the almost empty streets to take in all of the island’s beauty, winter can be a great time to visit Mykonos.

The Best Time To Visit Santorini

Santorini Greece blue domes

Santorini, also known as Thira, might be the most popular island to visit in Greece and is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable in all of Europe . Summer is the busiest time on the island, with most visitors coming in July and August. To avoid crowds, schedule your trip in the shoulder months of April, May, September, or October when crowds are thinner but the weather is still warm.

November through March are the coolest months with high temperatures between 57 and 60 degrees and lows ranging from 50 to 57 degrees. While winter is a good time to visit to avoid crowds, it’s also the wettest season in Santorini, so be sure to pack accordingly.

Hot Tip: Check out these boutique hotels in Santorini if you’re looking for a unique place to stay.

The Best Time To Visit Crete

Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands , and as the southernmost island in the country, it’s one that can be visited year-round.

Generally, May, June, and September are the best months to visit Crete for the perfect balance of great weather and fewer crowds. As with most of the Greek Islands, July and August are the hottest and most popular times to visit, so crowding can be an issue.

Hot Tip: Not sure where to stay? Check out these boutique hotels in Greece (including the Greek Islands) .

The Best Time To Visit Corfu

Corfu is a Greek Island in the Ionian Sea known for its beaches. If you want to soak up some sun on the beach, the best time to visit Corfu is in the summer (July and August specifically) when the weather is hot and dry. However, that’s the most crowded time on the island, as well. If you’d like to avoid crowds as much as possible, try to visit in the shoulder months of May, June, and September for a nice balance of good weather and reasonable crowds.

The Cheapest Time To Travel to Greece

The cheapest time to visit Greece is during the winter . This is a time when crowds are almost non-existent and prices for things like accommodations, flights, and even food are at their lowest. Keep in mind, though, that certain areas of Greece, especially the islands, will see many shops and restaurants close down for the season, so plan your trip accordingly.

Hot Tip: According to Kayak , February is the cheapest month to fly to Greece. To save money on flights, check out these booking websites .

Greece is an incredible country to visit and is high on many travelers’ bucket lists. In addition to famous ancient ruins like the Acropolis in Athens, there are thousands of islands to visit. You’ll find gorgeous beaches, delicious food, mountains for hiking, and plenty of small towns to explore.

The best time to visit Greece can vary based on what you’re looking for, but generally, you’ll want to shoot for the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall. These time periods offer a nice balance between weather that’s not too hot and crowds that aren’t too thick. Whenever you decide to go, Greece is definitely a country you’ll enjoy visiting.

Here's how you can visit Greece on a budget

Greece’s popularity means there’s competition for travelers on a budget. But by shopping around, and keeping a few key strategies in mind, you can have a memorable visit without going broke in the process. Just be aware that in the peak summer season, like elsewhere, deals are much more elusive in Greece .

What's the cheapest way to get to Greece?

From europe.

The best affordable way to reach Greece from Europe is by plane, and your options are myriad. To Athens , budget carriers like easyJet and Ryanair have everyday cheap fares from across Europe, as do traditional carriers such as Air France and Lufthansa . Greece’s national carrier  Aegean Airlines  also offers cheap fares to Athens from all over Europe. Whether flying to Athens or directly to an island from Europe, take time to compare the fares as deals usually abound.

You can fly direct to islands with international airports, such as Crete , Mykonos , Rhodes and Santorini . Most of these flights are run by charter carriers and are very cheap. Online travel booking sites will show many of these flights.

Note that if you are flying a route to an island that involves a connection in Athens, it is often cheaper to get a fare to Athens and then purchase a separate ticket to the islands. However, this works best if you only have carry-on bags. Otherwise, you will need to retrieve your checked bags in Athens and recheck them for your flight to the island.

Alternatively, you can fly to Athens and then get a cheap ferry ride out to the islands from the port of Piraeus . Allow, at minimum, three hours for this transfer, which involves taking the frequent express bus from the airport. A better option is breaking your journey in Athens , where you can enjoy a glimpse of the Parthenon and a night in Plaka before continuing on your ferry.

From North America

The three main US carriers fly from their hubs in the east non-stop to Athens in the summer season. These flights are popular and tend to sell out, so unless you get a deal early, the cheapest option will be an itinerary that connects at one or more hubs to reach Athens. The same applies to flights from Canada.

From the rest of the world

Whether flying from Asia, Africa, the Middle East or Oceania, you'll find that many options for flights to Athens include a connection in Europe, the Middle East or North Africa. There’s no secret to cheap fares here; once you know your dates, start shopping as early as possible and compare the fares from as many airlines as possible.

May and October are the sweet-spot months to visit

July and August are the peak travel times for Greece, and there are few deals to be had. Airfares, ferry prices and accommodation rates are at their highest. Many places offering the best value sell out quickly, leaving people who wait to firm up their summer plans to pay the price.

June and September can be slightly cheaper than the very peak season. The shoulder months are great times to travel as all the ferries are running, every business is open, and the weather is excellent. The best deals on flights and accommodation may be a little more available than in July and August.

For many seasoned travelers to Greece, May and October are the sweet-spot months to visit the country. Just about everything is open and running, but there are fewer people, and rates and prices can fall by 25% or more. These are good months to find reasonable fares on non-stop flights to Athens from the US as well.

The off-season from November to April can be a rewarding time to visit Greece, but it comes with many caveats. The weather is often crisp and rainy, so this is not the time for a beach holiday. Much is closed, especially on the islands. Accommodation choices outside Athens are constrained, and flights and ferries to the islands operate at a very low level. The cheap charter airlines cut their schedules entirely. Rather than reduce their fares to attract passengers, major airlines simply cut their flights to Athens and deploy their planes to warm-weather destinations.

Accommodation deals depend on the season and how early you book

As always with travel, plan your trip as early as possible to secure the best deals on accommodation.

In the peak summer season, rates are at their highest. Don’t expect to find a brilliant double room in a popular destination for €50 ($58), but if you book early, you might find a great room for €150 ($173) as opposed to a room for the same price – or more – overlooking the trash cans in the alley.

During the high season, it also pays to consider package deals for Greece. Booking sites and airlines often offer all sorts of discounts if you book everything through one company. But also note that package accommodation deals are usually at large resorts or vast generic holiday apartment complexes, which may or may not be in an inviting part of your destination. Package deals are not where you’ll find the quaint little room with a view at an indie inn.

Also, note that the days when elderly ladies met ferries with offers of cheap spare rooms are long gone. Everything is on booking sites like booking.com , Airbnb  and Vrbo .

In shoulder season, rates may be lower, and the choice of accommodation isn't snapped up as quickly – yet more reasons to consider travel in May, June, September and October.

From November to April, rates fall but so does availability as many places to stay close entirely. Note that holiday apartments may not have heating, so check carefully.

Choose how to get between the islands

Island-hopping is one of the real pleasures of Greek travel. Lounging on a deck while gliding past idyllic islands is part of many a traveler’s fantasy. Ferry fares tend to be consistent, but you can save money with a few strategies:

  • Book early (as always!). Larger boats often offer advance-purchase fares at significant savings from walk-up fares.
  • Compare prices. On competitive routes such as Athens to Mykonos, several ferry companies offer service in summer, and fares can vary a bit between them. Use online booking sites such as Ferryhopper to compare options.
  • Go slow. On routes where there are large traditional ferries and flashy fast ferries, the slow boats are almost always cheaper. One hidden benefit of the slow boats is that they usually have large amounts of deck space, so you can live that Greek fantasy and watch the islands glide by. Many fast ferries have little or no deck space, so you spend the journey locked up in charmless lounges.
  • In summer, there are also inter-island flights and much more frequent airline service to and from Athens, but the popularity of the flights means that deals are few. Watch out for major Greek holidays when locals buy up every airline (and ferry) seat to return to their home islands.

Pick your transport to explore the mainland

Greek buses are cheap, modern and reasonably comfortable. Every village has at least some service, although the smallest villages may not have much.

Although the train network is limited, fares are cheap where the trains run, and the seats are very comfortable. The route linking Athens and Thessaloniki is the real star, with fast trains linking the two cities in a little over four hours – faster than is possible by bus or car.

As elsewhere in the world, rental car prices have shot up in Greece. Your own wheels offer maximum flexibility but come at a cost. Deals are few, although you may be able to save by booking a car as part of an airfare and accommodation package.

One strategy to save money on car rentals is only renting cars on days when you need the flexibility and convenience to do some exploring .

Weigh your options for getting around the islands

On an island like Hydra , where all motor vehicles are banned, your options to get around the island are simple and free: you walk. However, on most islands, you’ll again be weighing the cost of a car versus the inconvenience of a bus. Popular islands will have summer-season buses serving popular destinations and beaches, so the strategy of renting a car only for certain days of exploration holds. Tiny rental companies exist on many of the islands in addition to the large chains, but in peak season, don’t expect any better rates from local vendors.

It’s usually easy to rent a scooter or motorbike from a local vendor. Budget about €20 to €40 ($23 to $46) for this. But make sure the rental comes with a helmet included, and you should know how to ride one before you rent one.

Steep hills, narrow roads and other challenging conditions, including the sun and heat, mean riding a bicycle is an activity chosen for the fun of it rather than a practical means of getting around easily.

Save on entrance fees

Paying to see museums, ruins, historic sites and other attractions is relatively inexpensive in Greece as entrance fees are set not to bankrupt the local citizens. But don’t forget to look for discounts for students and people under 26 or over 60 (eg, this means a 50% reduction in fees at the Acropolis in Athens, etc).

All beaches are free. Yes, you can pay for a pricey lounger, but there will always be a portion of the beach where you can smooth out your own towel and enjoy the same water.

Enjoy a good, cheap meal

Obviously, the waterfront restaurant or stylish cafe on a popular beach are not the places to go for a decent budget meal . But affordable options abound across Greece as local people also want to eat out but can’t afford tourist prices.

In every popular area from the heart of Athens to the smallest island village, step a street or two away from the buzz, and you’ll likely find shops selling souvlaki (grilled meat) sandwiches on pita and other Greek treats. You need not succumb to the siren call of the pizza joint or burger stand – although there are plenty of these – to get a good, fresh meal of Greek food for well under €10 ($12).

Bakeries sell sandwiches and other prepared foods, and even the smallest supermarket likely has a deli case filled with meats, cheese and prepared foods like tzatziki.

Drink for less

Supermarkets also sell cheap cold beer and wine. You can enjoy sitting on the rocks while savoring the same sunset as the people at the nearby pricey taverna. Spirits are always expensive.

Daily Costs

  • Inter-island ferry ticket: from €20 ($23)
  • Hostel room: €25-60 ($29-70)
  • Basic room for two: €50-140 ($58-162)
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): €100-300 ($116-347)
  • Public transport ticket: €1.20 ($1.30)
  • Coffee: €2 ($2.30)
  • Souvlaki sandwich: €4-6 ($4.60-7)
  • Dinner for two: €40 and up ($46)
  • Beer at a cafe: €3-6 ($3.50-7)
  • Beach lounger: €5-10 ($5.80-12)

The Best Time to Visit Greece

cheapest time to visit greece

 Glenn van der Knijff

The best times to visit Greece are in the spring and fall. From April to the beginning of June, the heat of summer has not yet set in and the cruise ships have not arrived with their thousands of tourists. From late September through October it's usually still warm enough for the beach but much less crowded. Whenever you choose to go, you'll find a lot to see and do, wonderful Mediterranean cuisine and lively, friendly people.

Weather in Greece

Summer is hot and dry. Unshaded beaches can be unbearable and unsafe for more than short periods. July and August are the hottest months. Average temperatures are between 85 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit and can reach more than 100 F. A dry, strong seasonal wind, known as the Meltemi , blows from May to September and can bring relief from the heat. In recent years, it has also encouraged wildfires. The winter is relatively mild and seldom drops below freezing. December and January are rainy. There is little snow except in the mountains of Northern Greece and the Peloponnese.

Peak Season in Greece

From June through September, popular areas of Athens and Thessaloniki are crowded. Monastiraki Square in Athens and the adjoining market are chock-a-block, the buses and Metro are packed. Some islands have popular sunset-watching spots that become crowded at prime vantage points. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are when most cruise ships visit Santorini, and the crowds of day-trippers on the island's main road make ordinary bus and taxi travel almost impossible until after sunset.

Prices are highest from July to the end of August and during school holiday periods—when visitors compete for space and attractions with Greek families. Savvy travelers can score bargains April to May and mid-September to mid-October when vacation weather is still good.

Key Festivals and Events

The Greeks like to party and there's hardly a time of year when there isn't a festival, a celebration or an event going on somewhere. Some, however, are worth including in your trip planning.

  • Greek Easter: This is a huge family holiday with events happening throughout Holy Week. Special foods are served in the restaurants and tavernas. Highlights are candlelit processions after Mass on Good Friday. In Athens, the procession goes up Lycabettus Hill and can be seen all over the city.
  • Carnival: Also called Apokreas , this is the celebration before the beginning of Lent that culminates in wild celebrations, feasting, and Carnival processions in costumes (that have been known to be very rude). The Carnival in Patras is considered one of the world's top three.
  • The Athens and Epidaurus Festival: This festival changed its name from the Hellenic Festival because most of its key events take place at two ancient theaters - the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the slopes of the Acropolis, and the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus near Nafplio. It's a month-long festival of international performances, including drama, dance, and music with top artists from all over the world.

Tourist Attraction Availability

Most historic attractions are open year-round, though they may have limited hours or short weeks in the offseason. Some commercial attractions, beach bars, cafes and accommodations close from the end of October until the middle of March because business slows in cooler weather. On Santorini, for example, autumn and winter winds are unpleasant and most accommodations on the caldera close by mid-October.

January is one of the coldest, wettest months of the year. This is an excellent time to visit the cities of the mainland and the areas around them. You may find hotel rates at bottom-dollar prices, but those that cater to business people won't be a great deal cheaper.

Events to check out:

  • Patras Carnival : Depending upon when Greek Easter falls, this could be the month for one of the world's top three Carnivals.
  • Gynaikokratia Festival : If you know your classical language roots, you'll know this one is for women. Gynaikokratia means women rule. Each year on Jan. 8, in Kavala and the towns and villages of Thrace, women swap roles with men for the day.

The temperature rarely tops 59 degrees F in February. You won't find snow in most of Greece but there will be snow in the mountains and in the Greek ski areas (yes there are some). Try Mt. Parnassus Ski area or Kalavrita on Mt. Chelmos in the Peloponnese.

  • Tsiknopempti: The name of this holiday, 11 days before the start of Lent, means, literally, goodbye to meat. And it's a long goodbye: restaurants, tavernas, and private family homes indulge in an orgy of meat-eating, and the smell of grilling meats is everywhere.

Days are perceptibly longer and the temperature might rise a few degrees, but don't count on it. It will be windy and miserable most of the time. But this is also the month when spectacularly diverse wildflowers begin to bloom.

  • Carnivals continue until the start of Lent, so look for local events at the beginning of the month.
  • Greek Independence Day: March 25 is celebrated with parades fireworks, and mock naval battles all over Greece to mark the start of the War of Independence from the Ottomans.

April weather is iffy. It can be pleasant and mild or windy and wet. The wildflowers are in full bloom, but if you are heading for the islands, you may find that ferry and hydrofoil services are still limited.

  • Orthodox Easter: Holy Week is significant to the Greeks. On Good Friday, after mass, candlelight processions head out into the night from various churches.
  • Rocket War : The island of Chios explodes on the Saturday night before Easter Sunday as two churches in the town of Vrontados aim fireworks directly at each other. The square between them fills with smoke, and thousands of tourists cheer.

This is the first reliably warm month with temperatures averaging in the high sixties and low seventies, rising to a high of nearly 80 degrees F once in a while. Flowers bloom, people fly kites and go out in boats, but beware: the water is probably still a little too cold for swimming in most places.

  • May Day: The first of May is an optional legal holiday in Greece, but most businesses give workers the day off. May Day is also strongly connected to workers' rights, and it's a big day for slowdowns and wildcat strikes, that could impact your travel plans.

Hot weather and the start of the high season. Expect crowded resorts, higher prices, and temperatures. The average temperature is in the high 80s F and can rise much higher.

  • Athens and Epidaurus Festival runs from June to August in the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and ancient venues all over Athens.
  • Nafplion Festival : A classical music festival at the end of June or early July featuring international artists.
  • Summer Nostos : is a week-long, free festival of music, dance, sports and theatre, all of it free, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in the Athens suburb of Kallithea

Temperatures average in the high 80s F and easily reach the 90s F in most places. It is also very dry so camping is forbidden in most national parks and even hiking in some area. Be aware that there's a risk of wildfires.

  • Outdoor Cinema : Open-air cinema is a longstanding Athens tradition during the summer months. The city has eight, some with the Acropolis as the background, some in historic parks and settings.
  • Kastoria River Party : Camping, music and cooling off in the river in northern Greece.
  • Cretan Diet Festival: No, it's not a weird new way to lose weight; it's a celebration of Cretan cuisine in Rethymno, Crete.

The heatwave continues. So do the lines at the major attractions and the high, in-season prices. But on the plus side, the nights are balmy and pleasant for outdoor dining and nightlife.

Event to check out:

  • XLSIOR : A giant LGBTQ, Pride, and music festival on Mykonos.

The average temperature is 75 degrees F rising into the 80s at the beginning of the month with cool nights averaging 66 degrees F. Days are sunny with almost no chance of rain.

  • Reworks : Thessaloniki's massive international music festival, one of the top 10 for September worldwide, takes place over four days mid-month.
  • Armata , on the island of Spetses, near Athens, celebrates a famous naval victory in the Greek War of Independence. The week-long festival ends with fireworks and the burning of an effigy of an Ottoman ship in the harbor.

Temperatures drop into the 60s with the average daily temperature of about 68 degrees F. With little chance of rain, it's still mild enough for sightseeing, hiking, and touring.

  • Ochi Day : On Oct. 28, 1940, Mussolini demanded that the Axis powers be allowed to enter Greece. The ultimatum was delivered to the Greek Prime Minister at 3 a.m., and he said "Ochi" (no), bringing the country into World War II. This national holiday is celebrated with parades, concerts, and feasts.

Temperatures hover in the mid to low 60s. There are more cloudy days and a greater chance of rain.

  • Thessaloniki International Film Festival : Southern Europe's biggest film festival event, held on the first 10 days of the month.
  • Olive harvest: Throughout this month, ripening olives are gathered and pressed. Most farmers are too busy for olive festivals, but you may be able to witness or take part in a harvest in the smaller towns and villages.

Average temperatures are in the 50s F. It's usually cloudy and the rainy season is just beginning. The mountains of the Peloponnese, northern Greece, and Macedonian Greece have snow cover.

  • Christmas : Unlike other holidays that follow the Julian calendar, the Greek Church adopted the Gregorian calendar dates for Christmas, so it falls on Dec. 25.
  • Christmas in Athens gets going with the Feast of St Nicholas (the inspiration for Santa Claus, Dec. 6, and continues with festive events until Epiphany, Jan. 6. There are public displays of festive lights, fireworks, and special holiday baked treats in the shops.

Are you trying to figure out the best time to visit Greece?

You must be smart to research this before heading there! Why?

Greece is a stunning travel destination for all kinds of travelers – history lovers, foodies, beachgoers, island lovers and so much more. Even a beautiful country like Greece has its moments of the absolute best times to visit and…

…times you should avoid visiting it.

Even as one of our favorite countries we’ve visited (after visiting 30+ countries), we will avoid touring Greece during certain months. And it may not be the months you’re thinking!

In this guide, we are going to share the best and worst times to visit Greece, the cheapest months, the crowded months and everything in between.

Quick Answer: When’s The Best Time to Visit Greece?

✅ The best time to visit Greece is May, June, September and October.

These months are considered the shoulder season where the average temperatures are around 73.4 ° F (23°C). These months have warm weather and much fewer crowds so you can enjoy exploring the stunning country. The attractions, restaurants and tours are still open but it will be much quieter than if you visit in the peak months (July, August).

❌ The worst time to visit Greece is December, January, July and August.

These are the coldest and hottest months of the year. When it’s cold in Greece, a lot of the islands’ restaurants, tours, and cafes are basically closed. When it’s the peak months (July, August), you will have to hot weather, pay more for accommodation and battle the crowds, especially on the islands.

Quick Stats On Greek Weather & Seasons

A lot of these stats vary based on where you are in Greece but we just want to give you a quick snapshot of what the weather in Greece can be like on average.

  • Hottest month in Greece: August (89°F/31°C)
  • Coldest month in Greece: January (50°F/10°C)
  • Rainiest month in Greece: December
  • Driest month in Greece: August
  • Most crowded months in Greece: July, August
  • Least crowded months in Greece: December, January

The summer months are from late June till the end of September which are considered the peak tourist months… The winter months are from November till the end of March which means the entire country slows down.

Everything in between is the spring and fall seasons which is the best time to visit Greece for fewer crowds, the weather is warm (but not too hot) and activities are still being offered to travelers.

Best Time To Visit Greece

“When is the best time to visit Greece?”

It’s a question we’ve asked ourselves when we planned on spending our honeymoon and a few months living in Greece over the years.

After our personal experience of visiting the mainland and the islands over different months in the year, we concluded:

There is a RIGHT and a WRONG time to visit Greece.

Here’s a few things to consider before visiting Greece and a general overview of what you can expect.

5x Things To Consider First Before Choosing

The weather can affect your experience in a place, especially as a traveler. In addition to that, there are so many other factors to consider when deciding the best time to visit a certain country.

The sunshine shouldn’t be the only thing on your mind, here are 5 things to think about:

  • Price Fluctuations
  • Activities/Tours
  • On vs Off Season

Okay, that’s 6 things but they are all equally important when it comes to choosing a time to visit Greece. Ultimately, it’s up to you and the way you like to travel. Some things will bother other people but they might not affect you.

Matthew and I love visiting digital nomad destinations during the shoulder seasons, for example. When we did our 8-month stint across Europe, we avoided Paris, Amsterdam and Barcelona during the peak months. Instead, we went to lesser-known cities like Zagreb and Belgrade for July and August. That’s our personal preference because there are fewer crowds, it’s a calm vibe and that’s how WE like to travel!

restaurants in athens

After our honeymoon in Greece, we knew we wanted to be digital nomads in Athens for a few months but we needed to pick our timing. We arrived in mid-September till early November! The weather was just fantastic and there were much fewer people around (up until it hit November then we got cold lol).

Maybe you aren’t like us and you don’t mind the crowds if it means you catch all the sunshine! The best time to visit Greece might be in the peak season because you just want the peace of mind that all activities and dining options will be open.

Struggling to know which is the best time? Ask yourself these questions to help decide:

  • Which parts of the country do I want to visit (mainland vs islands)?
  • How many activities do I want to do?
  • Do crowds of tourists truly bother me?
  • What kind of activities do I want to do?
  • Does the humidity affect me?
  • Are there any events I can’t miss?

The answer to these questions can help share when the best time to visit Greece is for you. Make sure you think of the kinds of activities you want to do and how you want to spend your time in Greece.

The Best Time To Visit Greece

If you want good weather, fewer crowds and affordable prices – the best time to visit Greece is May, June, September and October. The temperature during these months can range from 73°F (23°C) to 82°F (28°C). “It’s not too hot and not too cold. All you need is a light jacket!” as Ms. Rhode Island from Miss Congeniality puts it.

Visiting in the early fall (September, October), you could still jump in the ocean for a swim! Matthew and I visited the Greek islands in mid-October and we went for a couple of dips ourselves.

matt ashley in crete greece

More than that, visiting Greece in the shoulder months also means you get better deals on accommodation and lower prices for activities. Most tourists visit Greece during July and August which is one of the most expensive times to visit! If you want to get good deals and value for money – this is going to be the best time for you too!

The downside to visiting Greece during the shoulder months is that a lot of the islands actually close during the low season.

acropolis from a distance

If you want to do all the activities and ensure all the bars, restaurants are open when you visit, the safest bet is to visit during peak season (July, August). However, the crowds can get very VERY overwhelming!

We visited Santorini in mid-October and the crowds were still pretty big at that time. If you visit during high season, you will be shoulder to shoulder with crowds of people, constantly fighting to reserve spots at bars and restaurants.

The Worst Time To Visit Greece

You could say, there’s never a bad time to visit Greece…

…but we aren’t so sure about that.

The worst time to visit Greece is July, August, December and January. During the peak summer months (July, August), you’ll have to constantly battle the crowds, line up for every restaurant and pay more for things. During the coldest winter months (December, January), there aren’t many tours or activities available during the lowest season in Greece. The temperatures also drop to 50°F (10°C). Most islands also tend to close during the winter!

Matthew and I visited Santorini near the end of October, we were lucky enough to book the very last Catamaran sunset tour of the season! We missed out on a couple of restaurants in Paros because they closed a tad earlier than low season. That’s going to happen if you visit but the tradeoff is that you don’t have to deal with huge crowds.

crowds of athens

Greece attracts tourists from all over the world and it’s such an iconic travel destination – you have to expect big crowds. But we didn’t truly understand ‘big crowds’ till we saw it first-hand and it quickly becomes not-so-fun anymore.

However, it might just be worth it because you get great weather during your whole trip. Summers in Greece are pretty beautiful as everything comes to life that is until you continuously bump into people navigating the narrow streets of Athens, Santorini or other islands.

Temperature Year-Round In Greece

What’s the temperature like in Greece on average? The chart below shows the average temperature for each month of the year. The annual average temperature in Greece is around 68°F to 73°F (20°C to 23°C).

average temperature greece

The reason Greece is such a popular destination (other than the food, history and stunning islands) is that the weather year-round is pretty great compared to other European countries like the Netherlands or France.

Precipitation Year-Round In Greece

The rainiest months in Greece are November and December. As the weather changes from fall to winter, it can start to get pretty wet having about 2-2.5 inches of rainfall.

average rainfall greece

We were in Athens in early November and there wasn’t much rainfall for us. It obviously depends but the rain seems to start around late November. The months with the least rainfall are the peak summer months, July and August!

Weather Seasons In Greece

Greece is an amazing country with diverse landscapes, delicious Mediterranean food and so many cool things to do. There’s a reason why nearly 30 million visitors to Greece every year (pre-pandemic). That’s a whole lot of people!

Greece has the full 4 seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter. Every season in Greece is beautiful in its own way. Here’s what Greek weather is like throughout the year and the best things to do for each season!

Spring in Greece (April – June)

The flowers are booming, the cities are emptier than usual and the days are getting longer. Spring is one of the best times to visit Greece to enjoy the outdoors, go on picnics and wander the city admiring the pink bougainvillea flowers all around.

spring in greece

We suggest trying to visit later in the spring season for higher chance of things opening up. The islands tend to close in the low season so if you visit you might not get to do all the things on your bucket list!

Springtime in Greece also means that accommodation prices are going to cost less and more tourist activities are available at this time. If you want to save some money and have fewer crowds, the best time to visit Greece is going to be spring for you.

Summer in Greece (July – mid-September)

The sun is shining every day, there’s a buzz in the atmosphere and it’s the best time to jump in the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Summer in Greece attracts the most amount of visitors (nearly 10 million total people) during July and August alone!

With huge crowds of tourists wanting to visit the same landmarks, it can get pretty overwhelming standing in line for the Acropolis for 30+ minutes. Prices also increase during the summer months for things like accommodation, tours and activities.

crowds on greek ferries

Summer in Greece can get very hot and steamy with temperatures rising to as high as 104°F (40°C). During these months, you’ll barely get any rain which means you can definitely plan all your activities without worrying about the rain ruining your day/

Autumn in Greece (mid-September – November)

Fall is one of my favorite seasons because the leaves begin to change, the huge crowds start to leave and still some of the best weather. Greece is no exception to having a great fall season!

The autumn season in Greece is part of the shoulder months that we suggest visiting. The skies are clear, there are fewer crowds, accommodation prices begin to drop and it feels like you can breathe again.

autumn in greece

The weather in Greece during fall is around 77°F (25°C), isn’t that just perfect?! The only downside of visiting Greece in autumn is that things are starting to close down for the low season. You might not get all the opportunity to do the things you want but there are fewer crowds of people you’ll have to stand in line with for the Acropolis.

Winter in Greece (December – March)

Oh, winter…

…Some love it and some hate it! The cold is freezing, the sun is barely shining and it’s just a season to get through. Matthew and I literally chase the sun as digital nomads fleeing countries that get just a bit too cold.

matthew ashley in thessaloniki

Temperatures reach as low as 50°F (10°C) which isn’t actually too bad for a European winter. However, if you’re thinking you are going to jump in the blue waters – you might have to think again!

December is also the rainiest month in Greece. If you don’t like the cold or the rain can negatively affect your time, don’t visit Greece during the winter. On the other hand, it’s also the least crowded period season which means you won’t have to battle the crowds for any of the landmarks or activities.

FAQs – The Best Time To Visit Greece

Got some more questions about the best time to visit Greece? I would too 😉!

Here’s some quick frequently asked questions to help guide your decision on when is the best time for you to visit.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Mainland Greece?

The best time to visit mainland Greece is any time of the year. Lots of the major attractions don’t close as they do on the islands. Restaurants, cafes and bars will stay open throughout the year, too! It’s up to you whether you want warm weather or cold weather.

rooftop views athens

The top destinations on the mainland are Athens, Thessaloniki and Meteora. If you’re trying to decide between the 2 cities, we’ve written a guide on choosing between Athens vs. Thessaloniki !

These cities have similar weather throughout the year. We visited Thessaloniki in mid-October and it was already pretty cold compared to when we were in Athens in mid-October, the year before! In our experience, Thessaloniki got colder much earlier in the year.

Best Time to Visit the Greek Islands?

One of the best ways to figure out the best time to visit the Greek islands is actually to figure out the kind of activities you want to do. A popular reason to visit the picturesque islands is to swim in the clear, blue glimmering waters.

crete goat beach

The best time to visit the Greek islands is the summer season. You can’t beat getting into the refreshing water when it’s super hot and steamy out!

If it’s 50°F (10°C), the chances are pretty low you are going to be laying down your beach towel and jumping in the water. If you want to visit the Greek islands, don’t go in the early spring, winter and late fall seasons.

Most Popular Time to Visit Greece?

The most popular time to visit Greece is during the summer season, specifically the month of August. Lots of Europeans have vacation days in August, making it one of the top destinations for a week or weekend getaway. We would avoid Greece in August due to the massive crowds but it’s also the hottest month of the year!

Least Crowded Time to Visit Greece?

Hate crowds? Us too! The least crowded time to visit Greece is the low season (December, January, February). You won’t be shoulder to shoulder with other tourists and the lines for major attractions will be much less in the winter. But that means it’s cold so there’s that too.

Cheapest Time to Visit Greece?

Looking to visit Greece on a budget? We have seen some insane price cuts if you visit during the low season in Athens, Thessaloniki and even the islands. The cheapest time to travel to Greece is the winter season (December, January, February).

Best Time to Visit Greece For A Honeymoon?

You’re honeymooning in Greece? What a dream!

Matthew and I also spent our honeymoon across Greece in Athens, Paros and Santorini! We went during the shoulder month of October which we loved for several reasons – fewer crowds and more value for money. But we did miss out on some restaurants that closed early for low season. So if we had to choose again?

matthew ashley santorini view

The best time to visit Greece on your honeymoon is September. The huge summer crowds have left and it’s a lot quieter in the city/islands. The sunny weather is still going strong in September and a lot of the tourist activities (restaurants, bars and tours) are still available to book.

Bottom Line: When Is The Best Time To Visit Greece?

The best time to visit Greece is during the shoulder season months of May, June, September and October. You still get to enjoy beautiful weather, have fewer tourist crowds around and it’s going to be much more affordable!

We love visiting Greece – I mean we have been 3 times in the last 4 years! But…we will avoid Greece in the peak season months of July and August because we do not want to deal with such huge crowds of people.

Greece is a stunning travel destination for any kind of travel experience you could be looking for. The most important thing is that you just visit Greece whenever you have the opportunity!

Vineyards at The Best Time To Visit Greece

The best time to visit Greece depends on what you want to do and see. Here are some things to consider when deciding the best time to visit Greece:

Greece has a Mediterranean climate, which means hot and dry summers and mild winters. The best time to visit if you want to enjoy the beaches and the sea is from May to October.

The peak tourist season is from mid-June to August when temperatures can reach up to 35°C (95°F). If you prefer cooler weather, visit Greece in the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to November).

If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to avoid visiting Greece in July and August when many tourists flock to the popular destinations. The shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October are less crowded and offer pleasant weather.

If you want the warmest weather then you can simply head to one of the quiet Greek islands like Astypalea . They aren’t usually as easy to reach, but the journey there is always half the fun!

Greece has many festivals throughout the year, and it’s worth timing your visit to coincide with one of them if you want to see some local culture. The most famous festival is the Athens Epidaurus Festival in the summer, which features ancient drama performances and concerts.

There are also a huge number of religious festivals. These are great fun to see and immerse yourself in but it’s worth bearing in mind that a lot of the shops close over these festival periods, so make sure you’re stocked up on food just in case! We’ve made that mistake many times!

Here are a few festivals to keep an eye out for when you visit!

January – Epiphany  (Baptism of Christ). The priest often throws a cross into the harbor and young men will try to recover it.

February – Carnival  (Karnavali).  This is a biggy. The Latin for ‘farewell meat’, this is like lent where the Greeks give up meat until Easter. There’s loads going on at this time – parades, marching bands, costumes, just lots of merriment!

March – Independence Day.  Celebrated with marching bands and parades.

April – Orthodox Easter and Holy Week . The Greeks go big for Easter, but usually with their families, so expect things to be pretty quiet around this time. They tend to have big BBQs as they can eat meat again after carnival, so the air smells like fun!

June – Athens Festival .  Numerous productions of ancient drama, opera, orchestra performances, ballet, modern dance, and popular entertainers. If you happen to be here for it you’re in for a treat.

During June, July and August there are numerous different festivals going on across all the islands. It’s a time for lots of celebrations. If you’re heading to Greece over the summer be sure to look up what’s going on in the islands and towns you’re visiting.

If you’re interested in outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, or sailing, the best time to visit Greece is in the spring or autumn when temperatures are milder. If you prefer water sports then aim for the warmer months of July and August.

Overall, the best time to visit Greece depends on your preferences and interests. Consider the weather, crowds, festivals, and activities when planning your trip.

The best weather in Greece is generally from May to October , during the summer and early autumn months. During this time, the weather is generally sunny and warm, with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F) or higher.

June, July, and August are the hottest and busiest months in Greece, with temperatures sometimes reaching over 35°C (95°F) in some areas. However, the best beach towns in Greece and the islands benefit from refreshing sea breezes, making the heat more bearable.

The Meltemi winds blow in the Cyclades during the summer months which certainly cools things down. Just don’t have high hopes for picnics on the beach or you may end up with sandy sandwiches!

September and October are also good months to visit Greece, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 25°C (77°F). This time of year is also less crowded than the peak summer months, making it a good option for travelers who want to avoid the crowds.

It’s important to note that while the summer and early autumn months generally have the best weather in Greece, there can be occasional rain and thunderstorms, particularly in the northern parts of the country. It’s a good idea to check the weather forecast before you go and pack accordingly.

The harbour at Paros in Greece

The peak tourist season in Greece is from mid-June to August when many travelers from all over the world visit the country.

During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, and many people take advantage of the summer vacation period to travel.

As a result, popular tourist destinations like Santorini , Mykonos, Paros , and Athens can be crowded, and prices for accommodation and activities tend to be higher.

The shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October are also popular times to visit Greece. These months offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Many travelers prefer to visit during these periods to avoid the intense summer heat and the high-season crowds.

Overall, the best time to visit Greece depends on your preferences and priorities. If you prefer warmer weather and don’t mind crowds, the summer months are a good option. If you prefer milder temperatures and want to avoid the crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons.

The off-season in Greece generally refers to the period between November and April, excluding the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. During this time, many tourists leave Greece, and the country is quieter and less crowded.

The weather during the off-season in Greece can be cooler and rainier, with temperatures ranging from 10°C (50°F) to 15°C (59°F) on average. However, the southern parts of Greece, including Athens and the islands of Crete and Rhodes, tend to have milder winters with temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) to 20°C (68°F). You might even find snow in some places!

While some tourist attractions and businesses may close or have reduced hours during the off-season, many others remain open, and there are still plenty of things to see and do in Greece.

Visiting during the off-season can be a good option for travelers who want to avoid the crowds, enjoy lower prices, and experience a quieter and more authentic side of Greece.

Why not consider spending 4 days in Santorini as part of a trip to Greece during the off-season? This is usually one of the busiest Greek islands and you’ll find it so much quieter in the winter.

It’s important to note that it might be harder to visit some of the best islands of Greece as the off season means limited ferry and flight schedules. It’s a good idea to check in advance if you plan to travel between islands.

a girl overlooking a Greek town

The cheapest time to visit Greece is during the off-season, which typically runs from November to April, excluding the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. During this period, prices for flights, accommodations, and activities tend to be significantly lower than during the peak tourist season.

In addition, the shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October can also offer lower prices than the peak summer months, while still providing pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Traveling mid-week rather than on weekends can also help save money on flights and accommodations. If you’re on a tight budget, consider staying in budget-friendly accommodations such as hostels or apartments, rather than high-end hotels.

To save money on food and drink, look for local tavernas and markets where you can find affordable and authentic Greek cuisine. Many restaurants also offer fixed-price menus that can help you save money on meals.

Overall, the cheapest time to go to Greece depends on your flexibility and willingness to travel during the off-season or shoulder seasons. By doing so, you can save a significant amount of money on your trip while still enjoying all that Greece has to offer.

one of the best times to visit Greece just as the sun is setting

Greece does not have a traditional rainy season, as the country receives most of its precipitation throughout the year, with the exception of some areas that receive more rainfall in the winter months.

The winter months, from December to February, can be the wettest period in Greece, especially in the western part of the country and the mountainous regions. During this time, rainfall is common, and there may be occasional snowfall in the higher elevations. You can even ski in places !

However, the amount of rainfall in Greece varies greatly depending on the region and the time of year. The southern and eastern parts of Greece, including the popular islands like Crete and Rhodes, tend to be drier, with less rainfall throughout the year.

Overall, while Greece does receive some rainfall during the winter months, it is still a good destination to visit year-round, as the weather is generally mild and there are plenty of indoor activities and attractions to explore even on rainy days.

The hottest month in Greece is typically August, which is in the middle of the summer season. During this month, temperatures in many parts of Greece can reach over 30°C (86°F) and sometimes even over 35°C (95°F), especially in the inland areas.

However, the coastal areas and islands of Greece benefit from refreshing sea breezes, making the heat more bearable. The Cyclades islands, including Santorini and Mykonos, are known to be especially hot during the summer months but do benefit from frequent strong winds from the north at these times.

It’s important to note that while August is typically the hottest month in Greece, the weather can still vary greatly depending on the region and the year.

It’s a good idea to check the weather forecast before you go and pack accordingly, especially if you plan to visit the inland areas or participate in outdoor activities during the daytime.

monemvasia rock in the sunlight

There is no single “worst” time to visit Greece as it depends on individual preferences and priorities. However, there are some factors that may make certain times less ideal for some travelers.

The peak summer months of July and August can be crowded, hot, and expensive, with many tourist destinations packed with visitors. If you prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, this time of year may not be the best option for you.

Winter months, from December to February, can also be a less ideal time to visit Greece, especially if you’re looking for beach and outdoor activities. The weather can be cooler and rainier, and many tourist attractions may have reduced hours or even close for the season.

Additionally, if you’re planning to visit some of the islands or more remote destinations, it’s important to note that ferry and flight schedules may be limited during the off-season, making it more difficult to travel between locations.

Overall, the best time to visit Greece depends on your preferences, priorities, and travel goals. It’s a good idea to research the weather, crowds, and seasonal activities before you plan your trip and choose a time that suits your needs.

These are some of the questions we get asked most from people planning their Greek holidays.

How Many Days Do I Need In Greece?

a girl diving into the water from a sailboat

The number of days you need in Greece depends on your travel goals and priorities. If you only want to visit Athens and a few of the popular islands, you can probably get by with a week or so.

However, if you want to explore more of the mainland and visit some of the lesser-known islands, you may need two or three weeks or more.

Here are some suggested itineraries based on the length of your trip:

  • 3 to 5 days: If you only have a few days in Greece, consider spending them in Athens . This will give you enough time to explore the city’s top attractions, such as the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, and sample some of the local cuisines.
  • 7 to 10 days: With a week or so in Greece, you can explore Athens and one or two of the popular islands, such as Santorini where you can have some awesome experiences (treat yourself to a Santorini helicopter ride or one of the famous Santorini catamaran cruises ). This will give you enough time to relax on the beach, enjoy the nightlife, and experience some of the local culture. We’ve put together the perfect 10 days in Greece itinerary.
  • 14 to 21 days: If you have two or three weeks in Greece, consider exploring more of the mainland ( Monemvasia should be top of your list) and visiting some of the lesser-known islands, such as Leros , Symi , or Kastos . This will give you a chance to experience a wider range of landscapes, history, and local traditions.

Of course, these are just suggestions, and the number of days you need in Greece will depend on your personal preferences and travel goals. Whatever your itinerary, make sure to leave some time for relaxation and exploration, and don’t try to cram too much into your schedule.

The Best Way To Get Around In Greece

an old church on the island of Samos

There are several ways to get around in Greece, depending on your preferences and itinerary. Here are some of the best options:

Renting a car is a great way to explore Greece at your own pace and visit more remote destinations. Many major international car rental companies have offices in Greece, and the road network is generally good.

However, keep in mind that Greek drivers can be aggressive, and parking can be a challenge in some cities.

We have hired cars all over Greece and use Rental Cars , which has good deals and has always been reliable. We would recommend them as a go to hire car company.

Public transportation

Greece has a good public transportation system, including buses, trains, and ferries, that can take you to most destinations in the country.

Buses are the most common mode of transportation, with frequent routes connecting cities, towns, and villages. Trains are also available, but the network is more limited.

Ferries are an excellent way to explore the islands, with regular routes connecting the mainland with the most popular islands.

Taxis are widely available in Greece, especially in cities and tourist destinations. They can be a convenient and comfortable option for short trips or transportation to and from the airport.

However, they can be more expensive than public transportation, so make sure to negotiate the fare in advance or use a metered taxi.

There is no Uber in Greece.

Walking or cycling

Greece has many scenic and historic walking and cycling trails, especially in the countryside and on the islands. Walking or cycling can be a great way to explore the local landscape and culture, but make sure to bring appropriate gear and check the weather forecast.

Overall, the best way to get around in Greece depends on your itinerary, budget, and personal preferences. Consider combining different modes of transportation to make the most of your trip and experience the country’s diverse landscapes and cultures.

Do I Need Travel Insurance?

While travel insurance is not mandatory to visit Greece, it is highly recommended. Travel insurance can protect you against a range of unexpected events, such as trip cancellation or interruption, medical emergencies, lost or stolen baggage, and other unforeseen circumstances that can disrupt your travel plans.

Some reasons why you might consider getting travel insurance when visiting Greece include:

  • Medical emergencies: If you get sick or injured while traveling in Greece, medical treatment can be expensive, especially if you require hospitalization or evacuation. Travel insurance can provide coverage for emergency medical expenses, including hospitalization, doctor’s fees, and emergency transportation.
  • Trip cancellation or interruption: If you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a family emergency or illness, travel insurance can provide reimbursement for non-refundable expenses, such as airfare, accommodation, and tours.
  • Lost or stolen baggage: If your luggage is lost or stolen during your trip, travel insurance can provide coverage for the cost of replacing your belongings, including clothing, toiletries, and other essentials.
  • Flight delays or cancellations: If your flight is delayed or canceled due to weather, mechanical problems, or other reasons beyond your control, travel insurance can provide coverage for additional expenses, such as meals, accommodation, and transportation.

We use Safety Wing and highly recommend them. You can get a quote here .

When choosing travel insurance for your trip to Greece, make sure to read the policy carefully and understand the coverage limits, exclusions, and deductibles. Also, check if the policy covers any activities or sports you plan to engage in during your trip, such as scuba diving or hiking.

Here are some top tips for visiting Greece:

  • Plan your itinerary in advance: Greece is a country with a lot to see and do, so it’s a good idea to plan your itinerary in advance to make the most of your time there. Research the top attractions, landmarks, and destinations you want to visit and create a schedule that allows you to see everything you want to see.
  • Consider visiting in the shoulder season: If you want to avoid the crowds and save money, consider visiting Greece in the shoulder season, which includes May-June and September-October. You’ll still be able to enjoy good weather and most tourist attractions will be open, but prices will be lower, and there will be fewer tourists.
  • Be prepared for the heat: Greece can be hot during the summer months, so make sure to pack light, breathable clothing, and wear sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors.
  • Try the local cuisine: Greek cuisine is delicious and diverse, so make sure to try some of the local dishes while you’re there. Look for local tavernas and markets where you can find affordable and authentic Greek food.
  • Be respectful of local customs: Greece has a rich cultural heritage, and it’s important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and avoid loud and disruptive behavior in public areas.
  • Learn a few basic Greek phrases: Greeks appreciate visitors who make an effort to speak their language, so learn a few basic Greek phrases before you go. This will help you navigate the country and connect with locals. That being said, most people in Greece do speak English .
  • Explore beyond the popular tourist destinations: While Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos are popular tourist destinations in Greece, there are many other beautiful and interesting places to explore. Consider visiting some of the lesser-known islands or smaller towns to experience a quieter and more authentic side of Greece.

Conclusion: The Best Time To Visit Greece

In conclusion, the best time to visit Greece depends on your preferences, itinerary, and budget.

The summer months from June to August offer warm and sunny weather, but also crowded beaches, higher prices, and longer wait times at popular attractions.

The shoulder seasons of May and September or the off-season from October to April can offer lower prices, fewer crowds, and pleasant weather, but also some rainy days and cooler temperatures.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Greece is when it suits your travel style and interests. Regardless of when you go, Greece offers a wealth of culture, history, natural beauty, and hospitality that will make your trip unforgettable.

Perhaps we’ll see you here!

Best Time to Visit Greece – MUST READ • 2024 Guide

Greece probably needs no introduction to you. It was the one-time centre of the ancient world, the cradle of western civilisation and in 2024 remains perhaps THE ultimate dream travel destination.

Indeed, intrepid travellers have been exploring the Ionian peninsula since antiquity and today, the nation welcomes some 30 million visitors each year. It’s easy to why – Greece packs in ancient wonders, classical cities, glorious weather, wine, food and siren song. Best of all, Greek visitors get to choose from hitting the mainland or hopping between the paradise of the Greek Islands.

But, in high season Greece can get seriously busy and pricey. High summers can be punishingly hot and winters unexpectedly frigid.

In this guide, we will not focus on the why or the where, but on the when. So read on to find out just when is the best time to visit Greece taking into account weather, crowds, expense and more!

Best Time To Visit Greece – The classic time to visit is May-Aug. My preference is March or September.

Best Time To Go To Athens – Spring (Mar & April)

Best Time For The Greek Islands – June-July if you like the action.

Best Time For The Beach – May-October

Best Time For Sightseeing – Mar, Apr & October

Cheapest Time To Visit Greece – Winter (Nov-Feb)

When is the Best Time to Go to Greece?

Where to stay in greece, when to visit greece – a month by month breakdown, final thoughts on the best time to visit greece.

Greece’s main tourist season runs from between May and September and heavily peaks in the high season of July and August. This is typically the best time to explore Europe . At this time, you can expect the idyllic Mediterranean summers you were always dreaming about with blue skies, hot days and scarcely a drop of rain.

Greek’s really do come to life during the summer months and the country is an infectious and fun place to be – expect long nights of ouzo fuelled Zorba dancing. Many a backpacker in Greece falls in love with the country during their summer trips.

Of course, the flip side is that at this time Greece can get seriously busy. Popular islands like Crete and Rhodes tend to be thronged with package tourists during the summer holidays and you may struggle to find a spot of beach over which to cast your towel. Santorini can also get HORRIBLY crowded during the summer to the extent that you may find it impossible to enjoy it.

Also note that the heat in cities like Athens can be a bit stifling and oppressive during July and August. It can also make taking day trips from Athens a bit manic if there are heaps of other people with the same idea!

Accommodation and flight prices also tend to increase substantively in summer. To give you some context, I just did a quick skyscanner search and a return flight from London to Athens is $60 in April, but $150 in July.

My personal preference is to hit Greece during the shoulder seasons of April (you can maybe push to mid-may) and between late September and October. The weather is warm and pleasant but never unbearably hot.

Spring is a particularly great time to stay in Athens . You can also find decent bargains on flights and cheap accommodation in Greece at this time. Best of all though, the islands and tourist hot spots are a lot quieter – you may also get a decent photo of Santorini.

Of course, if you do visit in shoulder season some tourist resorts may not be fully operational and some hotels, restaurants and bars may still be boarded up.

Best Time to Go to Athens

The ancient, atmospheric and absolutely awesome city of Athens is often overlooked by visitors who often tend to head straight for the ferry terminal. This is a shame as Greek’s capital is one my top picks for Europe packing in a dizzying mixture of Grecian sites such as the Parthenon, some charming Byzantine churches’ and a raucous, youthful party scene.

The best time to visit Athens is between March and May or September and November.

At this time the weather is very pleasant with typical daytime temperatures ranging between 15 to 20 degrees. The classical sites and museums are easily accessible with tourist numbers perfectly reasonable at this time.

Crucially, this period also tends to be a sweet spot in terms of prices with flights from European cities starting as low as $25 and Athens hostel dorms hovering between $8 – $15 per night.

This is the perfect time to explore the real Athens and rub shoulders/exchange bodily fluids with the locals before the summer tourists show up. The city is very lively in the evenings with bars and clubs packing them in until daybreak.

Best Time to Go to the Greek Islands

The most impressive thing about visiting the Greek Islands is the sheer number of options available. It is said that there is a Greek Island for every temperament. If you are seeking a youthful cocktail of booze and clubs, then try Zante. For a comfortable family-orientated experience, head to the resorts of Corfu or to itch your Instagram scratch, head for Mykonos and Santorini. My personal pick of the Greek islands is Hydra; a bohemian hotspot which is a short ferry ride from Athens.

cool things to do in greece visit rhodes

In many ways, the islands are best experienced in summer. The days are hot, the nights are long and the beaches buzzing. Some islands only fully open up during summer and are at half capacity the rest of the time.

That said, the busyness is not for everybody and some people do prefer the Greek islands in April or October when the weather is sweet, but the tourist crowds are back at home. However, it can sometimes be difficult to reach the Greek Islands during shoulder and lower season as flights are fewer, further between and more expensive. The ferries also tend to operate on a reduced schedule. Still, if you are willing to plan ahead and possibly spend a bit more on transport, you can make it happen.

Best Time to Go to Santorini

The picture-perfect Greek island of Santorini has exploded in recent years thanks in no small part to a flurry of tedious Instagrammers. The island is indeed a beautiful tapestry of white houses, orange skies and green stony hillsides.

sunsets on santorini

Because of this spike in popularity, Santorini can get very busy meaning that Santorini accommodation prices go into orbit, and also meaning the island can be too busy for comfort.

Unless you are happy to pay $100+ per night for digs, and to have no personal space, avoid all summer especially from June – September.

Santorini is possibly best enjoyed in March, early May and between October and November.

If you can get to Santorini in winter, then you will probably find it’s just you and the locals. You’ll have your pick of Santorini hostels . This can be a lovely time to get under the skin of the island.

Best Time to Go to the Beaches in Greece

Greece is blessed with some of the most blissful and beautiful beaches in all of Europe. For azure seas and soft sands, head to Elafonsi when travelling in Crete and for beach-side club vibes, then trendy Mykonos is hard to beat. Note that the beaches of Santorini tend to be either dark sand or craggy, stone beaches and are not the main draw.

The beaches of the Greek islands are at their best between late May and October when the sea is perfect for swimming at the sands ideal for sunbathing. Many of the beaches are positively heaving between July and August and can get a bit too crowded for some sensibilities.

The winter is not exactly the ideal beach time as the sea can get a bit chilly and there is the chance of rain. Also, note that a lot of beach clubs and sea sidebars and restaurants tend to close during the winter.

Whether you’re looking to visit the absolutely breathtaking cliff monasteries of Meteora or the iconic white and blue mountain villages of Santorini, I am here to hold your hand and pour you a shot of ouzo and reveal the best places to stay in Greece!

Best Hostel in Greece –  Mosaikon

Mosaikon

Mosaikon is known for its crisp, clean dorm rooms and for its unbeatable location. They’re located just 800m away from Syntagma Square, which is buzzing with top-notch bars and restaurants. Another highlight of Mosaikon Hostel? It has a rooftop terrace with beautiful views of the Acropolis. As if this hostel wasn’t already the best!

Best Luxury Stay in Greece –  Ilio Maris – Mykonos

Take me back to my slice of paradise at Ilio Maris! This hotel drips luxury and is one of the best hotels in Greece. What’s better than taking a dip in the turquoise waters of the swimming pool while watching the sunset over the Aegean sea, with a cocktail in hand? This hotel is certainly worth the splurge!

Best Airbnb in Greece –  Urbanstudios Acropolis View

cheapest time to visit greece

Go big or go home with this Athens apartment. Okay, it’s a small studio apartment that just fits two people, all cozy and snuggly. However, what I mean by big is that it offers a BIG view of the Acropolis from the private balcony!

This chic little urban studio apartment in the heart of the popular and touristy area of Monastiraki puts you at the heart of it all. While there’s no kitchen, there is a mini-fridge and a tea kettle, plus a private bathroom.

Best Time for Sightseeing in Greece

Greece’s cultural-historical roots stretch back into antiquity and remnants of this rich history are scattered throughout the mainland of islands alike. The headline sites are probably the Acropolis of Athens, the Parthenon and the epic, cliff monasteries in Meteora.

As for the best time for sightseeing in Greece, this is typically at shoulder seasons in Spring and Autumn.  The best time for sightseeing in Greece is generally April through about mid-May, or October and into early November. At these times there are far fewer tourists crowding the views and the weather is ‘just right’ for walking but a bit too cool for the beach.

Best Time For Visiting the Acropolis

Perhaps the single most important antiquity site in Greece is the mighty Acropolis in Athens – an integral Athens itinerary stop . The ancient site occupies the hilltop overlooking the modern city and is visible for miles around. The Acropolis site consists of the Parthenon (Temple to Athena) some other sites and of course, the Acropolis Museum which must not be missed.

things to do when backpacking Greece: visit the Acropolis

The site is open all year round. However, note that it is substantially cheaper to visit during winter as the entry is half the price of the summer;

  • April to October: 20 Euro
  • November to March: 10 Euro

In terms of the best time of day to visit the Acropolis, are either 8 am (when it opens) as the site is quiet, and the sun is low making the heat less intense. Alternatively, another good time is 1-2 hours before closing. Again, the sun tends to be less intense and the twilight from the hill site over the city is incredible.

Cheapest Time to Go to Greece

For European standards, Greece is a moderately priced destination . It is notably more expensive than the budget bonanza that is Eastern Europe, but a hell of a lot more affordable than visiting France or even parts of Spain.

This does of course vary depending on where and when you go. Expensive Mykonos and Santorini tend to attract a monied crowd all year round. Crete and Rhodes offer budget package tours and Athens has plenty of budget hostels and dive bars.

Whilst Greece is an affordable country to visit at any time of year, the cheapest time to go to Greece is definitely during the off-season. The absolute best time of year to visit Greece on a budget is between the months of October and April. Accommodation is easy to find and often at a much-discounted rate and we also rented a car in Crete for much cheaper than in the high season.

The only catch can be the scarcity of flights going to certain Greek islands – but you can still usually get to Athens for a great price.

Busiest Time to Visit Greece

Greece is something of an ever-green destination and does attract visitors all year round. When I arrived in Athens during early March, my hostel dorm was pretty much full up with travellers.

However, the busiest time in Greece is most definitely between May and September with a long spike throughout July and August. At this time, the islands can get packed but even cities like Thessaloniki tend to attract backpackers spilling over from summer jaunts around the Balkans.

With increased visitor numbers comes price spikes too. In some places, accommodation prices can increase to 4 times what they would normally be.

Weather in Greece

The weather in Greece is classic Mediterranean – blissful summers followed by mild & wet winters. The weather in Greece is fairly consistent throughout the mainland and the Greek islands and there isn’t a mass of variation between them.

cheapest time to visit greece

The weather of the Aegean islands and the Ionian seas is milder. Some regions are also affected by “the Meltemi” – a summer wind which blows mostly over the islands of the Aegean and offers perfect wind conditions for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

In general, in order to avoid high temperatures (up to 100°F/+40°C), the best time to visit Greece would be between mid-Apr to mid-June and between early September to mid-October.

The closest the month to August, the hotter it will be.

Average Air Temperature in °C

Regional Differences in Greece

The Greek mainland stretches from the Southern precipice of the Balkan peninsula out into the med. The islands are dotted all around its’ extensive coastline and their locations range from a few kilometres from the mainland to several hundred from it.

Despite these geographical and archipelagic differences, the weather remains mostly uniform across Greece – give or take a few degrees of Celsius or an extra inch of rainfall here or there.

Peak tourist and off seasons are also consistent throughout Greece. Therefore the only regional specific consideration for when to visit Greece is perhaps the occurrence of local festivals and events.  We will explore some of these next.

Festivals in Greece

Did you know, some anthropologists hypothesise that contemporary festival culture has its roots in ancient, Hellenic Greece and their wine-flavoured orgies in celebration of Dionysus?

best monasteries to visit in meteora

These days, the Grecian festival season tends to centre around the Orthodox Christian calendar but fear not, it’s not all hymns and fasting and even pious occasions still permeate with a typical lust for life. Orthodox Christmas and Easter are the main two religious festivals. I stumbled across an Orthodox Easter Mass in Greece and found the sing liturgy very moving and the smouldering clouds of incense quite intoxicating – definitely check it out if you get the chance.

Here are some important or simply cool festivals in Greece;

  • Orthodox Easter:

Once the Church going is out of the way, Orthodox Easter in Greece actually akin to the ancient spring rite festivals with epic feasting which leads into dancing, singing and fireworks. It’s a great time to get invited to a Greek home.

If you’re planning a trip to Greece for Easter, remember: the date of Greek Orthodox Easter is tied to the Julian calendar, so it won’t necessarily match up with Catholic Easter, which is calculated using the Gregorian calendar.

  • Apokreas (Carnival season):

The carnival season begins 3 weeks prior to Lent and concludes after Easter. It represents quite a long window across which the various Apokreas take place.

Each region has its own version of Apokreas. Patra in the Peloponnese for the biggest and wildest celebrations, whereas Skyros in the Sporades sees entire towns dressed as goats. If you’re planning a trip, check the calendar. Each year the date of Apokreas is different.

  • August Moon Festival:

The August moon festival also takes place across the different towns of Greece. The loose concept is simply using the warm, moon-filled nights of August to host evening performances and parties. These range from all-night raves in the outskirts of Thessaloniki, to classical music performances inside the Acropolis in Athens.

  • Thessaloniki International Film Festival:

10 days of independent film screenings are held in Thessaloniki in mid-November. Athens has it’s own open-air film festival in summer but this one is cooler.

  • Ejekt Festival – 26 June:

Athens premier rock and indie fest sees international guitar slingers descend on the Greek capital for a long day of barre chords and pentatonic riffs.

  • Free Earth Festival – 29 – 29 August:

Free Earth Festival is Greece’s premier Psytrance festival taking place on the island of Halkidiki (yep, home of the famous Olives) .

Worst Time to Visit Greece

So far in this post, we’ve focused on the positives (we’re glass half full people) seeking out the best times to visit Greece. Now let’s look at the negatives!

There isn’t any real bad time to visit Greece. The weather is better than pretty much anywhere else in Europe all year round, and there is enough going on to keep a visitor busy at any time of year.

However, do bear in mind that it does sometimes get cold during the winter and it has even been known to snow in the north around Thessaloniki. Personally, I would also avoid the summer holidays at pretty much all costs as the crowding is simply too much.

By this point, you’ve probably already picked your personal perfect time to visit Greece. However, if you are still wondering what the best time to visit Greece is, then this month-by-month breakdown might help your final decision a bit easier.

beautiful greek island caldera views

Greece in January

January is Greece’s coldest month. In Athens, daytime temperatures can dip to a chilly 7 degrees (which to be frank could be summer where I am from) so bring a jacket. The Greek Islands can be very wet.

Needless to say, tourists are scarce at this time of year so you take advantage of low prices.

Notable festivals in January are New Years Day (also St Basils Day), Orthodox Christmas,  Epiphany and The Patras Carnival .

Greece in February

As with January, February can see cool temperatures and damp rainfall in the islands. Tourists are still thin on the ground and prices low.

The Carnival Festival starts in February ahead of the Lent, as well as Clean Monday.

Greece in March

March in Greece may be your sweet spot where you can expect decent weather and still take advantage of quieter attractions and lower prices.

Notable festivals are Greek Independence Day which also coincides with Feast of Annunciation.

An early easter can also fall in late March.

Greece in April

In April the weather is very nice throughout the land. Expect warm days that would rival a northern European summer and lesser and lesser rainfall.

From a tourism perspective, Greece does begin creaking into life around April and seasonal bars and hotels begin the deep clean.

Prices are still fairly low except for Greek holidays.

Orthdox Easter usually falls in April although the date does vary. The Athens International Film Festival and St Georges Day also take place in April.

Greece in May

May sees the start of the long summer so bring sun creams and head for the beach. May is when package tourists begin arriving in the Greek Islands so football becomes heavier, and beds more expensive.

Sometimes, a particularly late fall of Easter will mean it falls in the first few days of May. Other notable May festival are May DayWorkers Day and the Athens Jazz Festival is also worth checking out.

Greece in June

Visiting Greece in June can mean catching the magic of summer just before the prices spike and the unwashed masses arrive. Expect perfect days and lovely nights and merry-making.

There aren’t many outright bargains to be had, but you can still find hostels at fair prices.

June sees the Ejekt Rock Festival in Athens, the Athens and Epidaeous Festival as well as Navy Week – a huge national festival where Greece celebrates it’s naval and sea faring heritage.

Fortezza

Greece in July

If you visit Greece in July you are stepping into high season. The days can be very hot and the beaches busy. Some islands get more hectic than others and the likes of Santorini can feel like floating sardine tins.

Big August festivals are the Hyrda Puppet Festival and Hippocratia Festival in Kos. Oh, and the Raki Festival in Amorgos is certainly a lively one.

Greece in August

Simply put, August in Greece can be bedlam which will either be your personal vision of heaven and hell. Zante & Kos are hopping with party toddlers, Mykonos is packed with Instagram characters, and Corfu can feel like a forgotten British colony.

Prices are at their highest in August and days are at their hottest – it can be difficult to sleep if you don’t have AC.

Festivals in August include the Olympus Festival on Mount Olympus , the Rock festival Chania in Crete , the festival of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, as well as the Free Earth Psytrance festival in Kalidaki.

Greece in September

September is when temperatures and prices begin to come down, but the hotspots remain busy. If you are looking for a package deal, there are some bargains to be had, especially if you can be flexible.

Late September can be a great time to visit Greece as it mixes the mellow vibes with some of the most pleasant weather.

There are also a couple of wonderful niche festivals such as Festival of Trades of Traditions in Rhodes, the Pistachio festival of Aegina.

Greece in October

October is another good time to visit Greece. The weather is pleasant but not uncomfortable and even popular spots tend to be quiet. The Acropolis ticket price slashes itself in half and there are plenty of bargain flights to Athens.

There are no top rate festivals happening in October but the Chestnut Festival in Crete is one for fans of Chestnuts.

Greece in November

This is definitely the low season. Some of the islands may feel like they are half asleep and hostels will have plenty of beds available. The weather is generally bright and cool but nights can get chilly and there is some rainfall.

The religious calendar keeps going with Feast of The Archangels and Saint Andreas Day in Patras .

Greece in December

In December, Greece is substantially warmer and dryer than much of Europe but can see plenty of rainfall on the islands and cold nights. Some tourist hotspots will be all but hibernating.

December Festivals are St Nicholas Day, Christmas Day (they respect the Western date and then Orthodox Christmas in January), as well as New Year’s Eve of course.

Travel the Greek Way

When is the Best Time to Go to Greece?

Are you wondering when the best time to visit Greece and the Greek islands is? Perhaps you’re considering traveling during the high season, which typically falls in July and August. However, if you’re unsure whether the summer’s high temperatures, ranging from 32°C to 45°C, are suitable for you, you will find this post very useful.

As Greece has four distinct seasons, you can choose the shoulder season (May, June, September, and October). During those months the temperature in southern Greek islands is considerably cooler and still quite warm to swim.

cheapest time to visit greece

Or maybe you’re up for some mountain hiking in Greece, like hitting up Olympus or Taygetos, which are awesome pretty much all year round except when it gets scorching in summer. Or perhaps you’re keen on checking out one of the 19 ski resorts spread across Greece for some winter fun (December to March)?

What I’m saying is, that the best time to visit Greece really depends on what you’re into and what you’re expecting from your trip.

A sandy beach called Lefkada Milos Beach taken from a drone. Best time to go to Greece.

I will explain in this post which is the best season to go to Greece, what the weather is like in Greece during its four seasons and you can make up your mind when is the best time of the year to travel to Greece!

What Climate does Greece have?

The climate of Greece is typically Mediterranean: mild and wet winters, relatively hot and dry summers, and, in general, long periods of sunshine during most of the year.

A group of young people jumping off a yacht into the sea in summer.

Greece has four seasons but the year can roughly be divided into two main seasons: The cold/rainy/snowy winter period that lasts from mid-October to the end of March and the warm and dry season that lasts from April to October.

Athens, Monastiraki Sq, and Acropolis on the back. Best time to go to Greece.

Athens is a good base to measure average temperatures in Greece as it is roughly at the center of the country. The northern and mountainous areas can be much colder whereas the south (Peloponnese and south islands like Cyclades and Crete ) can be warmer.

Best Time to Go to Greece for Swimming?

cheapest time to visit greece

The sea starts getting warmer (still it will be on the chill side rather in the warm but can be swimmable!) mid to late May and is perfect and warm until mid-October. From May to June 2023, Greece had a lot of rain with warm weather. The sea was great to swim to but it is not a safe place if there are thunderstorms. During summer we had a difficult 2-week heatwave that reached 45 C in Athens.

Best Time to Hike in Greece?

cheapest time to visit greece

Any time of the year except June, July, and August, and especially avoid hiking in the bare islands such as the Cyclades . Hiking on the rugged terrain of islands in the summer is a guarantee for heatstroke.

If you would like to hike in the summer in Greece, choose the mainland and a forested mountain, like Menalon Trail in the Peloponnese or Pelion .

Read here for detailed information on how best to travel and hike safely in Greece.

When do Local Businesses Close?

The very large resorts do close for winter on the islands. That doesn’t mean that the islands are closed too! Santorini has some 15,000 permanent residents, Mykonos more than 10,000, and so on.

cheapest time to visit greece

If for instance, you go to Mykonos in April, not everything will be open but there will be quite a few hotels/taverns and bars, probably more than you can make use of all of them. There are still restaurants and cafes that the locals go to and many of those are open year-round. Bigger or more popular islands like Santorini are nowadays an all-year-round destination.

When is the High Season in Greece?

cheapest time to visit greece

July and August and if I were you, I wouldn’t go in those months to Santorini or Mykonos when it is excruciatingly hot, Europeans are on vacation, everything is super expensive and there are crowds everywhere.

cheapest time to visit greece

I would certainly avoid islands that have endless cruise ships dropping off (eg Santorini) thousands of tourists at a time unless the crowds are what you are looking for on your vacation.

cheapest time to visit greece

The costs will also depend on which island/s you visit. Cheaper options (and more “real Greece”) would be the islands of the North Aegean eg Lesvos, Chios , or Ikaria. The most expensive options are the likes of Mykonos, Santorini, and Paros.

Cheapest Time to Visit Greece

Visiting Greece on a budget is possible, you just have to plan everything early. You have to check the flights often and see when they will offer good discount seats. A good idea is to ask for their weekly newsletter with their deals.

Generally speaking, the cheapest months to book a flight to Greece are October and November. Visiting during the shoulder season – March and April, late September and October – also offers good deals both on flight tickets and accommodation.

Affordable Hotels

The most expensive time to book a hotel room is generally in the summer, especially on popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini. If you are planning to travel to popular destinations in Greece you should plan as much as possible and if you find a deal, go ahead and book it.

According to  Booking.com , hotels in Athens are 33% cheaper in February, and the hotels in Santorini are 51% cheaper than they are in August, and for Mykonos Hotels , March is 73% more affordable than August.

Evgenia Mataragka

Hiking to the temple of apollo epicurius at bassae, greek orthodox easter on tinos island, 2 thoughts on “when is the best time to go to greece”.

Hi my daughter is getting married on Mykonos next April. I’m 77 and have some mobility issues ( cannot walk long distances) Of course I’d like to be there but I’m not confident I can do it. I’d be flying from New York . Other than just getting there I thought I’d spend a day in Athens. Any help would be appreciated

Thank you for your message and congratulations on your daughter’s future wedding 🙂

I believe that you should hire a personal driver for the day so that not only will he drive you to the best sites but also to suggest where to dine and all the details that locals know. If you decide to go by yourself, going to Acropolis involves some uphill and slippery marble points. Perhaps you would be interested in using the lift and skipping the uphill? Please do read my dedicated post ‘ how best to visit Greece for mobility-impaired people ‘and if you need anything else in the between, I am more than happy to help. 🙂 Best wishes Evgenia

Best and Worst Times to Visit Greece 2024/2025

Greece is famous for its stunning islands, deep history, and warm hospitality, which makes it a popular destination for summer vacations, honeymoons, and anniversaries.

The most popular time to visit Greece is during the summer months from July to August. With the sunniest weather of the year and the warmest temperatures average highs above 35°C (95°F), this period is ideal for enjoying the beautiful islands and beaches.

But for outdoor activities and sightseeing, the best time to visit Greece is during the spring (April to early June) or autumn (September to October) seasons. These periods offer pleasant weather at around 24°C (75°F), without swarming crowds and the highest prices.

While planning a trip to Greece , read on to find out more detailed information about visiting Greece for different purposes and travel guides by month.

  • 1. Best Times to Do Greek Island-Hopping

2. Best Times for the Cheapest Prices and Fewest Crowds

3. worst times to visit greece, 4. greece travel guide by month, 1. best times to do greek island-hopping.

Greek islands make up most of its stunning scenery, not limited to the Cyclades and Dodecanese.

The best time to do Greek island hopping is between late May and early October as there are more sunny days and the weather is warm enough to swim — the seawater's temperature exceeds 22°C (72°F).

During this period, the Aegean Sea shows its full beauty with crystal-clear seawater and stunning beaches as well as warm breezes bringing salty and fresh smells, making for a perfect summer vacation. Ferries and flights are also more frequent than at other times, so you can maximize your schedule.

But you would not be alone to enjoy this perfect time. Expect big crowds during the peak season from July to August , along with rising temperatures and prices.

To get the best prices and avoid crowds, late May to mid-June and late September to mid-October would be your best choices. Most hotels and venues on the islands are already/still open and you could save at least 50% on costs without waiting in long queues and hot weather, with average highs exceeding 35°C (95°F).

To plan a perfect family summer vacation during this period,  you may interested in  How to Plan a Perfect Family Trip to Greece with Kids >>>

While spring and autumn are the shoulder seasons in Greece, winter (November to March) is considered to be the low season to go to Greece with the cheapest prices and fewest crowds. This is because of occasional rain or snow and cool weather averaging 12°C (54°F).

Most hotels and venues on the islands are closed during this period and it might be too cold to swim. But on the bright side, it won't make a significant difference to visiting historic sites and ancient ruins with a weather-smart schedule, and you won't encounter large crowds and long queues.

If you're planning to travel during festivals , such as Christmas and New Year, these are exceptions, with a sudden rise in prices of accommodation and flights from 40%. Making reservations 3–6 months prior to your trip would be helpful to get a better deal for your trip and avoid unreasonable costs.

Generally speaking, Greece is a year-round destination and could offer something whenever you pay a visit, with the worst time depending on where your interests lie.

If your itinerary includes a lot of outdoor sightseeing and hiking, then you should avoid July and August because of the uncomfortably hot weather with average highs exceeding 35°C (95°F), along with the highest prices and biggest crowds of the year.

However, if islands and beaches are a must for you, then November to March would be your worst time to visit Greece. During this period, most businesses on the islands close and the weather tends to be gloomy with occasional rain/snow, making it uncomfortable to engage in water activities.

Are you having trouble balancing island beach time with outdoor sightseeing? Late May, June, and October would be your best times to go to Greece when the crowds and prices are relatively lower and you could participate in everything you want to make the most of your vacation in Greece.

Greece in January and February

Weather in Greece in January and February is similar, with gloomy days and chilly air averaging 10°C (50°F).

Despite the fact that it might be uncomfortably cold/wet to spend a long time on outdoor sightseeing, these months offer distinct advantages, such as fewer tourists and lower prices. Imagine having renowned attractions, such as the Acropolis in Athens and the White Tower of Thessaloniki, all to yourself.

Besides visiting ski resorts, such as Metsovo and Arachova, for winter leisure, January and February also offer festivals that let you experience warm hospitality and local culture.

You could celebrate the New Year holiday and enjoy fireworks at Athens' Syntagma Square, witness the inspiring cross retrieval ceremony during Epiphany for blessings, and join in the joyful Patras Carnival. With an array of exciting events, you would not lack interesting things to do.

Greece in March

While most island destinations remain closed, weather in March in Greece brings cool yet sunnier, with temperatures averaging about 15°C (59°F).

Santorini offers tranquil moments in the warmth of the sun and the Meteora region offers awe-inspiring spring landscapes during a weather-smart itinerary.

Moreover, Greece celebrates its Independence Day on March 25th , a time when people gather to cherish hard-won victories. Join in the parades, dances, and toasts — foreign travelers can easily blend into the joyful atmosphere.

Greece in April

April is considered to be the start of the best times to visit Greece, with sunny days and warm temperatures of about 19°C (66°F), which is great weather for outdoor sightseeing or hiking but may still be too cold for water activities.

Since April also signals the start of the shoulder season, you won't encounter hordes of tourists in most regions. The exception is during Greek Orthodox Easter , which falls on May 5th in 2024.

Tourists from all over the world travel to Greece and gather in Athens to celebrate Easter, resulting in a brief surge in travel activity and prices.

Greece in May

May marks the month for the full opening of island destinations before the summer season. With warm temperatures averaging 23°C (73°F), it could be a great weather for sunbathing and swimming on one of these sun-soaked paradises. Furthermore, this is the last opportunity to seize low-season discounts on popular islands, such as Santorini, Naxos, and Paros.

Not limited to islands alone, mainland Greece also shines in May. Gorgeous wildflowers blanket the mountains and plains, painting an idyllic scene that would captivate your eyes.

Greece in June

June brings about an increase in temperatures, rising to about 28°C (82°F), alongside the increasing crowds and prices. As the coolest month of the summer season, June offers sunny weathers and perfect conditions for visiting your desired destinations.

Hike in the Parnassos National Park in Delphi , explore the charming streets of the old town in Nafplio , or unwind on the captivating pink sands of Elafonisi Beach in Crete . Greece in June gives a warm welcome wherever you want to visit.

Greece in July and August

July and August in Greece form the peak of summer, both with scorching daily high temperatures averaging about 32°C (90°F) and swarms of holiday-makers from all over the world. Islands like Mykonos and Santorini beckon with their crystal-clear waters and lively atmosphere, inviting you to relax on stunning beaches and enjoy the vibrant nightlife.

If you prefer history and culture, explore the indoor sites to escape the heat. The Acropolis Museum or the National Archaeological Museum in Athens could be great options. To avoid crowds and the summer heat, visiting at less popular times of the day would be helpful, such as in the morning before 8am or at lunchtime between 11am and 1pm.

Greece in September

September in Greece brings milder weather, with temperatures averaging about 27°C (81°F). It's an ideal time for exploring Greece without the intense summer heat or the large crowds of tourists.

Enjoy pleasant seaside temperatures on the Greek islands, embark on boat trips to explore the volcano and hot springs in Santorini, or indulge in water sports, such as snorkeling and windsurfing, in Crete.

On the mainland, consider attending one of the local wine festivals that take place in September, such as the Anhiolos Wine Festival in Thessaloniki. It would add extra fun to your journey and you could experience the rich wine culture of Greece.

Greece in October

The weather tends to be mild in October in Greece, with high temperatures averaging about 22°C (72°F) and sunny days, making it an ideal month to explore Greece.

The Greek islands have a quieter ambiance without crowds and such high prices. Most facilities would still be operating, allowing you more space to savor their beauty and tranquility.

With such good weather, October is also an opportune time to delve deeper into Greece's cultural heritage. Marvel at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in Crete or explore the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Greece in November

November is the start of the low season for visiting Greece, bringing cooler temperatures averaging about 17°C (63°F). Most islands close from this month until May since it is too cool for most to relax on the beaches.

While visiting islands may not be a good choice, you could explore mainland Greece during this month as it offers a different kind of charm. Take leisurely walks to explore the bustling cities and towns, appreciate the changing of the guard at Syntagma Square, and enjoy the opportunity to connect with the locals on a more personal level.

Greece in December

December in Greece is considered to be the festive month of the low season and temperatures average about 14°C (57°F).

While the weather may be cooler than other months, Greece is still warmer than most countries in Europe. The cities come alive with enchanting decorations and a joyful atmosphere, attracting people there to celebrate Christmas.

Explore the Christmas markets in Athens or Thessaloniki, where you could enjoy the dazzling lights, festive music, the warmth of Greek hospitality, and even find unique gifts for your loved ones.

First, you’ll want to plan your trip around the weather . In general, the cheapest time to visit the Greek islands on a budget is just before or after summer.

However, keep in mind that the weather may not be ideal. You should pack for the seasons you’ll be visiting, so don’t forget your umbrella. You’ll also want to dress in comfortable clothing and wear sunblock.

If you’re looking for cheap hotel deals, consider the months of April and May. The weather is still warm, but the crowds are lower. This is also a good time to find some of the cheapest fares to Athens.

If you’re interested in sightseeing, it’s also a good idea to schedule your trips for the months when there’s less rain. There are also fewer tourists, so you’ll get better rates on accommodation and activities.

Ferry travel within Greece

For travelers on a budget, ferry travel within Greece can be a cheaper alternative to airplane travel. The price of tickets is usually affordable and the trip can be relaxing as well as fun. While there are several options to choose from, it is important to decide whether your travel time and comfort are more important to you than the cost.

During the summer months, high-speed ferries are the most common option. If you are looking for a more relaxed experience, you may prefer a slower boat.

Most islands are connected by ferry, but there are some remote areas that require flights. In many cases, your only option is to fly into Athens and take an inter-island ferry.

When traveling within Greece , be aware that the schedules for ferries can change. During popular seasons, you might be required to book in advance. In addition, you may also face delays due to strikes or safety precautions.

Some popular lines include SeaJets, Golden Star, and Anek. You can find deals on these ferries through websites or booking agents.

When is the peak season in Greece?

Greece has the potential to be a budget-friendly destination . If you plan your trip well and choose to visit during the off-season, you’ll be able to enjoy the best prices, as well as the most beautiful weather, without breaking the bank.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Greece is during the autumn. This is because the high season has ended and the weather is still good. However, the weather can be a bit damp and cold. If you prefer the warm and sunny weather, you should avoid visiting Greece during these months.

On the other hand, the shoulder season is also a good time to travel to Greece. This is the period from mid-September to late October. This is the best time to find the cheapest hotel and airfare prices. This is also a good time to take advantage of ferry services.

While many people are afraid of the weather, Greece is actually a wonderful place to visit during the winter. The weather is pleasant, but there is still some rain. The weather is cooler and the crowds are less. You’ll have a chance to explore museums and other attractions while staying warm.

Cheapest time to go to Athens Greece

If you are looking to visit Greece on a budget, there are several things you need to know. Fortunately, if you know how to plan ahead, you can find some great deals. The best way to do this is to start shopping early.

When you are researching the cheapest time to visit Greece, keep in mind that it’s best to avoid traveling during major holidays . Not only is it difficult to find flights to Greece during those times, but ferries and other inter-island transportation may also become a problem. Besides, it’s also hard to find accommodation during those months, since the islands are less popular.

There are three main US carriers that fly nonstop to Athens in the summer. However, you should expect to pay around $1,090 round-trip.

Celebrating Greek Easter in Greece

Easter is one of the most important holidays in Greece . It is a time of celebration, prayer, and reflection. It is also a great opportunity to connect with family and friends. The traditions and customs of celebrating Greek Easter vary from village to village, but in general, there is a common theme of joy.

The celebrations begin weeks in advance. The main purpose of Easter is to commemorate the Resurrection of Christ. It is also a time of fasting. There are three main days: Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, and Good Friday.

On Easter, all archaeological sites are closed. In addition, museums are closed. However, many small and authentic restaurants and hotels are open. You can also enjoy Easter activities and traditional Greek folk music.

One of the biggest religious events of the year is the Easter Mass. On Easter, the church service is held at midnight. It is followed by a huge feast. This meal includes a variety of dishes, including a red-cooked egg. It is said that the strongest egg will bring good luck for the whole year.

Christmas and New Year in Greece

A visit to Greece during the Christmas and New Year holidays is sure to fill you with joy. While you can’t escape the winter cold, you’ll have plenty of fun and great food.

The Greeks have a long tradition of decorating their homes and boats to mark the holidays. They’ll often have a Christmas tree and a decorated boat next to their fireplace. The decorated boats are a symbolic representation of the journey home and the safe return.

In addition, there are several festivals throughout the year. For example, Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th. The priest blesses the waters with a ‘blessing of the waters’, which signifies a blessing for the coming year.

On the day before Christmas, many families enjoy a festive meal. This is the perfect time to enjoy a variety of foods from all over the world.

Avgolemono soup is a traditional Christmas dish. It’s usually served with rice or orzo. It’s made with an egg and lemon mixture. For extra flavor, it’s sometimes infused with mastiha or honey.

What you should know when planning a trip

There is a wide range of destinations and attractions for budget travelers in Greece. If you plan your trip carefully, you can have an amazing holiday without having to spend a lot of money.

One of the best places to visit is Athens. It is home to incredible historical sites and museums. The Acropolis Museum is a must-see.

Many travellers choose to visit Greece during the summer. The water temperature is warmer and swimming is possible. If you prefer to swim in the sea, you can visit the island of Crete during the summer months.

For the most budget-friendly trips, it is recommended that you stay on islands, rather than staying in the mainland. These are less developed and will have cheaper prices. Some islands, like Lefkada, Hydra, and Agistri, are relatively cheap.

If you are traveling during the off-season, you’ll save a significant amount of money. However, you may have to sacrifice some of your sightseeing plans. This is because most of the businesses and services are closed during the low-season.

Cheapest time to go to Greece – Conclusions

If you want to experience the magic of Greece, but you’re on a budget, you may be wondering when the best time to visit is. The good news is that Greece is very affordable, and the prices vary depending on the season.

The most popular tourist times are during the summer months of July and August. This is when you’ll be able to find the cheapest flights and hotels, but you won’t have as many visitors as you might in the off-season.

During the winter months, you’ll be able to enjoy a quieter, less-touristy version of Greece. But the weather isn’t always ideal. Mainland Greece can get snow and damp during the winter, but the islands tend to be a little warmer.

If you’re looking for an off-season adventure, you might consider visiting during early or mid October. You’ll be able to take in Greece’s archaeological sites, without the crowds of tourists. And the weather isn’t as bad as it is during the summer.

The cheapest way to get to Greece is to fly in from the United States . You can save up to 83% by booking your flight well in advance. If you plan to go by ferry, you’ll also have a cheaper option.

March in Greece is not the best time to visit if you’re looking for warm weather and beach days. The weather can be quite rough, with cooler temperatures and rainy days. But that doesn’t mean you should cross Greece off your travel list during this month.

March is a great time to visit Greece if you’re interested in exploring the country’s archaeological sites , such as the Acropolis in Athens or the ancient city of Delphi. The sites are less crowded during this time, so you can take your time and fully immerse yourself in the history and culture of Greece.

Clean Monday , or Kathara Deftera, is the start of Lent in Greece and is celebrated with traditional customs and festivities.

Clean Monday marks the end of Carnival season and the beginning of a 40-day period of fasting before Easter. The skies are filled with colorful kites and children run around, enjoying the first signs of spring.

It’s a great time to experience the local culture and enjoy the beautiful Greek weather.

Tip Clean Monday is a moveable feast, as it is 40 days before the Orthodox Easter.

Greek Independence Day, celebrated on the 25th of March every year, is a national holiday in Greece that commemorates the country’s independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821.

The day is marked by military parades that take place in cities and towns across the country. The weather is mild and sunny, with average temperatures of around 19°C (66°F) in Athens and other mainland areas, and a bit cooler on the islands.

This is the perfect time for sightseeing , as the crowds are still relatively low, and you can explore the ancient sites, museums, and other tourist attractions without feeling overwhelmed. The popular tourist destinations like Athens and Santorini are not as crowded as during the peak season, which means you can enjoy them to the fullest.

During this time, you can also take part in various events that take place across the country, such as the Orthodox Easter celebrations (see more details further below). These events offer a great opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions and meet friendly locals.

Although it might still be a bit chilly for swimming, April is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and visiting the beaches, especially on the southern islands where the temperatures are a bit warmer. If you’re into nature, you can visit the national parks and nature reserves like Mount Olympus, Vikos Gorge, or the Samaria Gorge.

World Wild Schooling - https://worldwildschooling.com Best Time to Visit Greece According to a Local - https://worldwildschooling.com/best-time-to-visit-greece-travel-tips-from-a-local/

Late spring is a great time to visit Greece. The weather is mild and sunny, making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the country’s numerous ancient sites, such as the Acropolis in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion . This is also the time when the wildflowers are in full bloom, adding more beauty to the already stunning landscapes.

During this time, the weather is warm but not too hot, and the crowds are still relatively low. This makes it an ideal time for hiking, cycling, and other outdoor adventures . You can explore the mainland or the smaller islands, like Sifnos or Serifos, without feeling overwhelmed by other tourists.

The archaeological sites are also less crowded, so you can take your time admiring the ancient ruins without worrying about the crowds. The most famous sites, such as the Acropolis in Athens or the Palace of Knossos in Crete, are open year-round. But during the peak season, they can get very crowded, making it difficult to enjoy the full experience.

May is already a good time to spend time on the beach, although it might still be a bit chilly for some to go for a swim. It really depends on you and what you’re used to. If the weather happens to be on the warmer side, then the water will be warmer too.

If swimming is important to you, then head to Crete or Rhodes , as they’re further south and the sea is warmer there. I’d suggest going for a hotel with a pool, preferably heated, as even if it’s not heated, it will still be a bit warmer than the sea as it’s a smaller amount of water.

The 1st of May in Greece is celebrated as International Workers’ Day, and it’s a day of political activism and protests .

Many workers take to the streets to demand better working conditions and rights, while others participate in organized rallies and marches. On this day, many attractions and museums remain closed as a mark of solidarity with the workers’ cause.

While it may not be the best day to visit museums or tourist sites, it’s an interesting opportunity to witness the political and social issues that are important to the Greek people.

Greek Orthodox Easter is a time of vibrant celebrations, steeped in history, tradition, and religious significance. It’s the most important holiday in Greece, and it usually falls in late April or early May, marking the end of the Lente period.

Tip The Greek Easter is usually on a different date compared to the Catholic Easter, because they follow different calendars to calculate the day of Easter. It is a moveable date for all Christians.

But be warned, Easter is a popular time to visit Greece, so it can get crowded , particularly in popular tourist destinations. But don’t let that put you off. Embrace the crowds, join in the celebrations, and immerse yourself in this unique cultural feast that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on your heart and soul.

Greeks celebrate Easter , or “Pascha,” with great enthusiasm and passion. The Orthodox Church follows a different calendar than the Western Church, so Easter Sunday, or “Kyriaki tou Pascha,” can fall on a different day. The week leading up to Easter is called “Holy Week,” or “Megali Evdomada,” and it’s a time of religious observance and preparation.

  • On Good Friday , or “Megali Paraskevi,” people attend church services, and in the evening, there’s a somber procession of the “Epitaphios,” or “lamentation of Christ.”
  • On Easter Saturday , or “Megalo Savvato,” people attend a late-night service, and at midnight, they celebrate the resurrection of Christ with fireworks and candles.
  • On Easter Sunday , people attend church services, followed by a big feast with family and friends.
  • Greeks also celebrate Easter Monday , or “Deutera tou Pascha,” with picnics and outdoor activities.

However, it’s important to note that Easter is a popular time for travel in Greece, so expect large crowds and busy tourist destinations during this time.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Greece during Easter , you’re in for a treat. Each region has its own unique way of celebrating, but all involve feasting, fireworks, and heartfelt traditions that date back centuries.

In Corfu , for example, locals throw pots out of windows to commemorate the resurrection of Christ, while in Chios, there’s a spectacular fireworks battle between two rival churches. The atmosphere is electric, and the streets are alive with music, dancing, and joyous revelry.

In Greece, the celebration of Easter is a significant event for Orthodox Christians. Apart from attending church services, one of the most important Easter traditions is enjoying delicious food with family and friends.

One popular dish is roasted lamb on a spit , paired with tsoureki , a sweet Easter bread. Before the main feast, Greeks break their fast with magiritsa Easter soup, made of lamb, rice, and dill. It’s a delicious and comforting way to start the celebrations. So if you’re in Greece during Easter, don’t miss the opportunity to try these traditional dishes and experience the festive atmosphere.

At night, the beach bars and clubs come to life, making it an ideal time for nightlife enthusiasts.

The Ionian Islands, such as Corfu and Zakynthos , are also popular destinations during the summer season. They are known for their lush vegetation, crystal-clear waters, and stunning beaches. The water temperature is slightly cooler than in the Aegean Sea, but it is still warm enough to swim comfortably.

The downside of visiting Greece during the summer season is that it can get very crowded, and the prices can be quite high. Hotel rooms, restaurants, and attractions may be fully booked, and you may have to wait in long lines to visit popular sites.

It is also important to note that the strong winds, known as Meltemia, can affect ferry services in the popular Cyclades island complex, so plan accordingly.

Welcome to the start of summer in Greece! If you’re looking for the perfect time to visit without being overwhelmed by tourists, then June is the month for you. As a Greek with extensive travel experience in Greece, I can attest that this is a wonderful time to explore the country.

The weather in June is warm and sunny, with an average temperature of around 27°C (81°F). The Aegean Sea is inviting, with crystal clear water perfect for swimming. The best part? The islands are not as crowded as they are in July or August, so you can enjoy the beaches and sights without feeling like you’re in a sea of people.

Plus, the cherry on top is that prices are still lower than during the peak summer months of July and August, making it an excellent time to visit if you’re on a budget. Ferry services and flights to the islands are up and running, and everything is open, so you won’t miss out on anything.

July is a hot and happening month in Greece! It’s the time when the country is at its peak in terms of tourism, with people flocking to the gorgeous beaches and popular tourist destinations. The average temperature during this time is around 29°C (84°F), with practically no rain in sight. You’ll be able to soak up the sun and work on that tan to your heart’s content.

However, be prepared for the crowds, as July is one of the busiest months of the year in Greece. The beaches are bustling with tourists, and the popular attractions can get quite crowded, although it’s still not as busy as in August. You’ll need to book your hotel rooms, car rentals, and ferry services in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.

The heat is more intense in certain areas such as Crete and Rhodes , so make sure you’re prepared for the high temperatures. Drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and keep your sunscreen and hats handy.

Although the prices are higher in July than in June, they’re still a bit less than in August. So, if you’re looking for a balance between affordability and lively crowds, July is the perfect time for you to visit Greece!

Tip Consider visiting archaeological sites during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds and the scorching heat.

Overall, August in Greece is a fantastic time to soak up the sun, enjoy the sea, and immerse yourself in the country’s rich culture. Just be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices during the busiest time of the year.

If you’re planning a trip to Greece, it’s important to know about the major national holiday called Dekapentaygoustos . This holiday falls on the 15th of August, and the week before and after it is the busiest time of the year in Greece. This means that you can expect larger crowds, higher prices, and more traffic during this time.

However, don’t let that deter you from experiencing the unique and vibrant cultural celebrations that take place during this holiday.

Dekapentaygoustos, or the 15th of August, is a major national holiday in Greece, celebrated with large dancing feasts known as panigyria . Panigyria are vibrant celebrations where locals and visitors come together to dance, feast, and celebrate the holiday. They typically involve traditional music, delicious traditional Greek food , and plenty of wine.

These festivals are held all over Greece, and some of the most popular are in Paros, Syros, Chania, Amorgos, and Ikaria. Tinos is the center of this celebration with thousands of Greeks flocking to the island to celebrate the Assumption of Virgin Mary and commemorate the sinking of the warship Elli in 1940 by the Italians.

If you’re looking for a more low-key experience, consider visiting Greece during the shoulder season in May, June, or September. The weather is still warm, the crowds are smaller, and the prices are lower. Plus, you’ll have more opportunities to explore the country’s ancient sites and stunning landscapes without the hassle of larger crowds.

August in Greece can be a tricky time to plan a trip. On the one hand, it’s the peak of summer, so you can expect plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. But on the other hand, it’s also the busiest and hottest time of the year. The August in Greece can be very crowded with tourists flocking to the beaches and popular destinations like Santorini, Mykonos and Crete.

If you’re looking for a lively party scene, then Mykonos is the place to be in August. It’s famous for its extravagant nightlife and attracts a younger, party-loving crowd. But if you’re after a more relaxed and peaceful vacation, then you might want to avoid the popular hotspots altogether.

Keep in mind that prices tend to be higher in August than in other months. This applies to everything from flights and accommodation to food and drinks. That being said, there are ways to save money, such as booking in advance and staying in less touristy areas.

It’s also important to note that the heat in August can be intense, especially in the southern parts of Greece like Crete and Rhodes . So, make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, hats, and lightweight clothing.

Overall, whether or not August in Greece is a good time to visit depends on your preferences. If you don’t mind the crowds and high prices, and want to experience the lively atmosphere, then it might be the perfect time for you. But if you’re after a more peaceful and budget-friendly vacation, then you might want to consider visiting during the shoulder season.

October and November are fall months in Greece, and they offer a perfect opportunity to explore the ancient ruins and archaeological sites without the crowds. The weather is milder than in summer, and the average temperature is around 20°C (68°F) in October, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and sightseeing.

During these months, the larger islands and coastal areas are quieter, and without the tourist crowds the small islands start shutting down around mid-October (some even in September). It is best to explore bigger islands, such as Crete or Corfu , or the mainland of Greece during this time.

It’s also a great time to opt for city breaks as prices are lower, and you can get better deals on hotel rooms. The fall season months of October and November offer a great time to visit Greece and experience the country’s rich culture and history without breaking the bank.

Oxi Day, also known as “No Day,” is a significant national holiday in Greece that is celebrated on October 28th every year. This day marks the country’s brave stance against the Italian occupation during World War II. The term “oxi” translates to “no,” which was the one-word response given by the Greek Prime Minister to the Italian ultimatum demanding free passage for their troops to occupy Greece.

To commemorate this historic event, Greece holds various festivities, including military parades and wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials. It’s a day of national pride and unity, as Greeks come together to honor their country’s bravery and sacrifice during one of the darkest times in history. If you’re ever in Greece during Oxi Day, be sure to join in the celebrations.

The 17th of November in Greece is a day of mixed emotions. It marks the anniversary of the student uprising against the military dictatorship in 1973, where tanks were sent in to suppress the protests in Polytechnio (Technical University) resulting in tragic loss of life.

Today, it’s a day of commemoration and reflection, with marches and demonstrations taking place across the country to honor those who lost their lives in the fight for democracy. While it’s a somber occasion, it’s also a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Greek people to stand up for their rights and freedoms.

Every November, runners from around the world gather in Athens for one of the most historic marathons in the world. The Athens Marathon is a 42.195-kilometer race that retraces the steps of the first-ever marathon runner, Pheidippides. The route starts in the town of Marathon and ends at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, which was the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

The Athens Marathon has a rich and storied history that dates back to the ancient Greeks. Legend has it that Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens in 490 BC to deliver news of the Greek victory over the Persians. The modern-day race, which was first held in 1896, was inspired by this mythological feat. Today, it is one of the most popular marathons in the world, attracting runners of all levels and abilities.

Registrations for the Athens Marathon open in April, and it’s recommended to sign up early, as spots fill up quickly.

The winter months in Greece, from December to February, are the coldest months of the year. Many of the smaller islands shut down for the low season. However, it’s an excellent time to visit Greece if you enjoy skiing. The mountainous regions of the country, such as Arachova and Kalavryta, offer all kinds of snow sports.

Athens is also a great city to visit during the winter months as it’s less crowded, and the temperatures are mild, with an average temperature of around 13°C (55°F). The city’s vibrant nightlife, historical sites, and excellent dining scene make it a good idea for a city break.

Overall, there is no bad time to visit Greece. The country offers something for everyone, whether you want to explore ancient ruins, relax on the beach, or experience the rich culture and history of the country.

The best time to visit Greece depends on your preferences and what you want to do on vacation.

As a Greek who has lived and been almost everywhere in Greece on different seasons, I highly recommend visiting during the shoulder season months of May, June, and September. During these months, you can enjoy the beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices while still experiencing all that Greece has to offer.

However, if you are okay with the crowds and are willing to pay a bit more, visiting during the high season months of July and August can still be a great option, especially if swimming and beach activities are your priority.

Are you looking for a cheap holiday in the Greek islands ? With thousands of islands, Greece is full of options for all budgets. Low-budget destinations in Greece are what they sound like, trust me!

If you’re looking for an inexpensive but beautiful escape. This guide isn’t just about finding the cheapest places; it’s about experiencing the true spirit of Greece on a budget.

Let’s dive into finding the best Greek islands for your wallet-friendly adventure!

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Evia Island - Sunset boats at Eretria Euboea Greece

The second largest island in Greece, Evia is an excellent destination for a budget trip. Although Evia is an island, it is separated from the Greek mainland by the narrow Euripus Strait, which is only 40 meters wide at its narrowest point. As such, two bridges connect Evia to the mainland, making it a perfect destination for a day trip .

Given its proximity to mainland Greece, Evia remains relatively unknown to international tourists and is mainly frequented by Greeks. There are so many places to stay on the island and so many different types of lodging, meaning the accommodation prices are varied if you choose to stay for a few days.

As Evia is 80 km away from Athens , it is easily accessible by public transportation (buses, trains, and ferries). Going by land takes between 1 and 2 hours from the Greek capital to Chalcis, the town that connects the island to the mainland with the two iconic bridges.

Traveling by ferry takes about 40 minutes from Rafina Port in Athens to Marmari in Evia.

Guide To Where To Stay In Crete, Greece

Crete, the largest Greek island, might surprise you with how budget-friendly it can be despite its popularity. It’s all about knowing where to look. Crete is a masterclass in affordable travel, offering a variety of hostel and budget hotel options, especially in towns like Chania and Rethymno.

When it comes to eating, the island is a haven for foodies on a tight budget. Street food vendors and local tavernas serve up mouth-watering Cretan specialties at prices that are easy on your wallet. And let’s not forget the wealth of free or low-cost attractions, including stunning beaches, scenic hikes, and historic sites like the Palace of Knossos.

With its rich history, vibrant street life, and stunning landscapes, Crete proves that you don’t have to spend big to enjoy the best of Greece.

The Saronic Islands

3. aegina .

Island Hop Greece, Here Is How To Travel Between Greek Islands - Aegina

Located only 30km from Piraeus port in Athens, Aegina is a perfect city escape . The short distance from the Greek capital keeps travel costs low, and the island can even be included as part of a more extended Athens trip , making it a genuinely cheap Greek island holiday.

With beautiful coves and plenty of historical sites , Aegina is a great budget destination.

The main attraction on the island is the Temple of Aphaia , one of the three temples that make up the famous Sacred Triangle of Greece. The other two temples are the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. So, if you love history, this is a place to tick off your list.

Ferries depart Piraeus port almost every hour, year-round, and tickets are very reasonable, especially if you buy a return ticket.

  • Things To Do In Aegina

Chalikiada is the most popular beach in Agistri island, Greece

The nearby island of Agistri is an easy and cheap ferry ride from Piraeus Port in the capital. Given its proximity to Aegina, this is also a perfect spot for an affordable Greek island-hopping adventure .

As Agistri is such a small island , it is perfect to navigate on foot or by cycling. This means that transportation costs during your trip to Agistri are very low. Apart from saving money , hiking is the best way to see the most beautiful side of an island that offers paths through stunning natural landscapes with breathtaking views.

Largely appealing for the adventurous traveler , Agistri is an excellent destination for mountain bikers, climbers, and bold sailors. Agistri is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, with pristine beaches to boot.

Greece Hiking - Scenic view of Panagia Hozovitissa monastery on Amorgos Island

Did you know that you can camp throughout Greece? Amorgos is the perfect camping destination – as is the reason it makes out the list of cheap Greek islands. With many sites to choose from, this is an excellent place for the adventurous budget traveler.

Amorgos boasts natural beauty , with incredible hiking opportunities across the island’s many ancient footpaths. Its craggy caves, beautiful diving spots made famous in the movie “The Big Blue,” and stunning turquoise bays mean there is so much to explore in the great outdoors. With only 2000 residents, the tiny island is an ideal destination to escape the crowds and get back to nature.

As there is no airport on the island, the only way to get there is by ferry to one of the island’s two ports: the port of Aegiali or the port of Katapola. Luckily, the island is situated close to the islands of Naxos and Santorini , both of which have airports with many flights in peak season .

Once in Naxos or Santorini, you can easily catch a short ferry to the island. Of course, you can also travel to Amorgos by ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens, which runs three times a week during the summer months .

With a similar volcanic landscape to that of Santorini , Nisyros is the perfect budget alternative. Although it is a small island, there is plenty to see and do.

The capital of the island, Mandraki, is full of classic whitewashed buildings and alleys filled with tavernas, boutiques, and cafes to explore. There are also many small traditional fishing villages, like Nikia or Pali, which is home to an ancient thermal spa . Undoubtedly, one of the best things to do on the island is to visit the island’s active volcano and stand on the hot sulfur grounds.

With no airport, the only way to reach the island is by ferry from Piraeus or neighboring islands. However, given its proximity to Kos, an effortless way of getting to Nisyros is a flight to Kos Airport and a ferry to the island’s Mandraki port.

Acropolis Of Lindos, Rhodes, Greece

The largest island in the Dodecanese, Rhodes, is a popular tourist hub. Rhodes offers many accommodation options for all budgets, given its size and popularity. With large resorts and smaller homestays, you will find the perfect budget place to rest.

Known as “the Knights Island,” Rhodes has plenty to see and do for the history buff among us. With great medieval architecture, cosmopolitan towns, and beautiful beaches, you will never be short of activities.

One of the best spots on the island is the Old Town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Old Town offers visitors the chance to visit the Venetian Castle, the Street of the Knights, and the Palace of the Grand Master. These sites will transport you back to the rich and dramatic past of the island.

If you prefer beaches to history, then Rhodes offers 42 huge, beautiful beaches to explore . The beaches of Tsambika, Anthony Quinn Bay, Faliraki, Ladiko, Kallithea, and Saint Paul’s Bay are some of the best on the island.

As a popular tourist destination, Rhodes is easy to get to on a budget. Both international and domestic flights arrive at Rhodes Airport daily. The island is also reachable by ferry from Piraeus port.

Quiet Islands In Greece - Windmills in Chios

Close to the Turkish coast, Chios is a laidback island perfect for a budget holiday. Although Chios is the fifth largest Greek island , there are no big resorts on the island, so it has remained relatively clear from mass tourism.

Chios is famous for its exports of mastic gum and is sometimes called ‘the Mastic Island”. Mastic is an unusual flavor, used in many sweets and most famously in Mastiha, a digestive drink from Chios.

Hiking around the south side of Chios, you will see the iconic mastic trees from which the mastic gum is said to ‘weep.’ If you would rather spend your time sipping Mastiha than hiking, the island is also famous for its beautiful villages, such as Pyrgi and Olympi, which are the perfect places to stop for a drink.

You can fly directly to Chios from Athens or take a ferry from Piraeus Port , with routes running three times a week all year round. However, you can also get to Chios from Turkey . As the island lies so close to the Turkish port of Cesme , you can fly to Izmir and catch a very short 30-minute ferry across to the island.

13. Lesvos (Lesbos)

Lesbos Island Greece

Close to the Turkish coast , the island of Lesvos is famous for its Petrified Forest, incredible cheap food, and amazing olive oil.

Greece’s third-largest island does not rely solely on tourism but instead thrives on its olive oil industry and is the cheapest Greek island to visit for that liquid gold.

With so much “liquid gold,” the island is known for its delicious local food . One of the best things to do in Lesvos is to journey to all the traditional villages, sampling the tavernas and the local liqueur, Ouzo .

Lesvos is full of beautiful natural landscapes, including hot springs and stunning beaches. Given its rich history, there are plenty of ancient Byzantine monuments to discover, including the castles of Molyvos, Sigri, and Mytilene, the Acropolis of Ancient Pyrra, and the monasteries of Taxiarchis and Agios Raphael .

It’s easy to get to Lesvos , with daily international and domestic flights arriving at Mytilene (Lesvos) Airport. However, there is also a long 12-hour ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens and many ferries from closer islands: Syros , Mykonos , Ikaria , and Chios.

  • Guide To The Island Of Lesbos

The Largest Islands in Greece - Samos Island

As one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean , Samos is surprisingly less visited than many of its neighbors, which makes it the perfect budget escape.

There is much to do on this stunning island, from natural sites to archeological wonders and picturesque villages. As the birthplace of Pythagoras, the town of Pythagorion boasts many historical sites.

These include the ruins of the Heraion Sanctuary, the place where Zeus and Hera were said to have had their honeymoon; the Tunnel of Eupalinos, the first of its kind in Europe; the Cave of Pythagoras, the mathematician’s famous hiding spot; and Thermae, the beautifully preserved Roman baths dating back to 1st century BC.

Accessible by domestic flight from Athens or Thessaloniki , it’s straightforward to reach Samos, and as one of the cheapest Greek islands to visit, you can splurge on a flight rather than a longer ferry. Of course, if you want to, there are also long ferries from Piraeus port – the duration of which is 12+ hours.

Island Of Kythira Greece - Chora, Kapsali village view at Sunset

The birthplace of Aphrodite, Kythira remains one of Greece’s best-kept secrets for a tranquil vacation and is one of the cheap islands to visit in Greece!

Located in the south Peloponnese , Kythira is relatively isolated from Greece’s tourist hotspots.

There are no signs of mass tourism on this island, and for those who enjoy nature and seclusion, it is the perfect Greek escape. The most popular thing to do in Kythira is hiking across the island and visiting the various abandoned villages, beautiful chapels, and small secluded beaches.

Of course, being off the beaten track means that Kythira is not that easy to get to. The easiest way to get to Kythira is by ferry from the port of Neapolis. The port can be reached by car or bus from the capital—during peak season, one ferry service weekly leaves Athens’ Piraeus port. Although less of a budget option, Kythira can also be reached by domestic flight from Athens throughout the year.

Living in Greece

  • Attractive weather, climate, and lifestyle : With an average of over 2,500 hours of sun annually, warm to hot summers, and mild winters, it is an ideal destination for beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Low crime levels: Greece has an overall falling crime rate, with lower levels than the UK or the USA. Both violent crime and drug-related crime rates are considerably lower in Greece.
  • English is relatively widely spoken in major tourist destinations. This is less true in more rural areas, but either way, some knowledge of Greek would be very useful.
  • Good quality healthcare : A National Health System (ESY) provides free or low-cost healthcare to all eligible residents. Private facilities are widely available, very well equipped, and staffed with English-speaking specialists.
  • A superb retirement destination thanks to its lifestyle, climate, residency options, the cheapest Golden Visa in the EU, and lenient tax regime offered to foreign retirees.

Moving to Greece

Foreign citizens can move to Greece to live permanently. EU citizens must apply for a residence permit after three months, which is more of a formality. Non-EU citizens must go through a more thorough immigration process.

Residency in Greece for non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens do not have automatic rights to settle down in the EU.

You have to follow non-EU application procedures.

Many non-EU citizens, including Brits, USA citizens, etc., can stay in Greece for up to 3 months without a visa. After this, you will need to apply for permanent residency.

Generally, this must be completed at the Greek consulate in your home country before you travel to Greece.

Different residency permits are available depending on your purpose for moving to Greece. The most popular are financially independent persons (FIP), Golden Visa, and digital nomad visa.

You can find all the details in our guide Greece: Visa & Residency Options for non-EU Nationals.

Golden Visa program

You can invest €250,000 in property in Greece or €500,000 if you buy in Athens, Thessaloniki, Mykonos, and Santorini, and receive residency in 60 days. You must also get a Greek tax number and a Greek bank account during this time.

Doing this provides you with a 5-year renewable residency permit covering spouses and children. It also provides you with access to national healthcare and schooling.

The advantage to this over standard citizenship application is that it’s generally quicker and saves a lot of paperwork.

If you have questions or need more information, see our complete Guide to EU Golden Visa Schemes .

The cost of living in Greece

Greece uses the Euro, but living here is generally cheaper than in other European nations such as France and Germany. It is much more affordable than in North America.

Here’s how the cost of living in Greece compares to some Northern European and North American countries:

An infographic showing how Greece;s cost of living compares to Northern Europe and North America

The cost of living is higher in cities, particularly ones with a lot of tourism.

For example, rent in the center of Athens will set you back about €1,200 for a good (but not luxury) one- or two-bedroom apartment. Travel for half an hour north to Maorusi, and for the same money, you can find a spacious 3-4 bedroom apartment.

Here are the basic expenses in various cities across Greece:

Generally speaking, an expat with a monthly income of €2,200 will be able to live quite comfortably almost anywhere in Greece.

Greece as a retirement destination

According to the  Expatra Global Retirement Index , Greece consistently scores high as a retirement destination and is in our 20 Best Places To Retire In The World .

The index is based on the  Expatra Global Retirement Survey that asks international retirees to rate their retirement destination’s infrastructure, climate, ease of settling down, value for money, friendliness, and other aspects of life in their retirement destination.

Here’s how Greece scores:

An infographic showing Greece's Retirement Scores

Greece’s main advantages as a retirement destination are the flat tax regime offered to foreign retirees, an affordable Golden Visa program, and a FIP visa and residency option.

Travel connections

Athens International Airport is the primary gateway and offers international flights all year round.

Major cities and popular tourist destinations, such as Thessaloniki , Heraklion (Crete) , and Rhodes , also have international airports. However, some of them offer flights only to Athens during the winter time. To travel further, you can use connecting flights in Athens.

International ferries connect Greece to the following countries:

Italy : Greece has ferry routes to Ancona, Bari, Brindisi, Venice, and Trieste.

Turkey : Ferries connect several Greek islands, such as the Dodecanese and the Eastern Aegean islands, to various Turkish ports along the Aegean coast.

Cyprus : The ferry travels weekly from Limassol (Cyprus) to Piraeus (Greece) between June and September.

Albania : Ferry connections between Greece’s Corfu port and Albania’s Sarandë port are accessible throughout the year. The ferry journey is a quick 30-minute ride, and ticket prices typically begin at approximately €20.

Public transportation

Public transport in Greek cities, especially Athens and Thessaloniki, is fairly reliable and convenient.

The capital city, Athens , has buses, trams, the metro, and a suburban railway. The Athens Metro, in particular, is efficient and connects key areas. Tickets are affordable, and various options include daily and monthly passes. As an example, a 5-day ticket costs €8.20.

Greece’s second-largest city, Thessaloniki, also has a bus system, although it’s less extensive than Athens. The city is known for its compact size, making it walkable for many residents.

Public transport can be pretty patchy on the islands, with larger islands offering more options. Many expats prefer to own a car as it makes travel easier.

Buses and trains

KTEL buses provide intercity transportation across the mainland.

Greece has a limited railway network. The rail service primarily connects major cities like Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patras. Trains are known for being scenic, but their schedules may not always be the most practical option for transportation.

Ferries play a crucial role in island connectivity. The main routes include:

  • Piraeus (Athens) to the Cyclades : Piraeus is the primary port of Athens and serves as the gateway to the Cyclades islands. Major destinations in this group include Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, and more.
  • Piraeus (Athens) to the Dodecanese : Piraeus also offers ferry connections to the Dodecanese islands, including Rhodes, Kos, and Patmos.
  • Piraeus (Athens) to Crete : Ferries run from Piraeus to the island of Crete, with Heraklion and Chania being popular ports of arrival.
  • Thessaloniki to the Northern Aegean Islands : Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, offers ferry routes to the Northern Aegean islands, including Thassos, Lemnos, and Samothrace.

Living in Greece

Renting a property in Greece

The standard minimum rental contract in Greece is three years. You might be able to arrange a shorter lease, but this will be on a case-by-case basis. However, monthly payments will often be lower if you commit to a longer contract.

Typical villas and houses in the Greek countryside and suburbia

Most rental agreements require a deposit equivalent to two month’s rent, and utility bills may or may not be included in the rental price.

It’s safest to deal through an estate agent, as private rentals can often be a minefield for anyone not fluent in Greek. Either way, it’ll help to bring a translator along to ensure there are no snags.

Rent increases must be stated in the contract, so read the fine print. Similarly, you can only be evicted for not paying rent, so renters generally have more rights in Greece than in countries like the UK or the USA.

Here is a list of documents commonly required when renting a property in Greece:

  • Valid ID: You must provide a valid passport or national ID card to prove your identity.
  • Proof of income: Landlords often require proof of income to ensure you can afford the rent. This includes recent pay slips, employment contracts, or bank statements.
  • Residence permit: If you are a non-EU citizen residing in Greece, you may be asked to provide a valid residence permit.
  • Rental application form: Some landlords or rental agencies may require you to complete a form with personal details, employment information, and references.
  • References: Providing references from previous landlords or employers can help build trust and demonstrate your reliability as a tenant.

Buying a property in Greece

Once you’ve found an area that is right for your needs, the next logical step is to buy a property. The best way to do this is with the Golden Visa, as it brings a lot of advantages, but not everyone has the spare cash to invest.

Please note that these average property prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the specific location, property type, and market conditions. It is recommended to consult with local real estate professionals for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

When buying a property, you must declare whether it’s for residence or investment purposes. This doesn’t make a difference to your eligibility, though. Greece charges an annual property tax that’s determined by the property’s purpose and must be declared on your annual tax returns. As a result, you must have a Greek bank account and tax number to purchase a property.

In border areas, such as Rhodes and Crete, properties are restricted, and your application must go through a committee. EU residents will generally face little difficulty with this process, but the same isn’t always true for non-EU residents.

Again, an estate agent can help ensure everything is above board. When working out your budget, factor in legal, surveyor, and notary fees, plus a minimum 10% deposit.

You’ll probably find it difficult to get a mortgage through a Greek bank, so many expats do so through international lenders. However, this requires more documentation, including proof of funds and their source.

Taxes in Greece

Greece has no lower income tax threshold, meaning you pay tax on everything you earn. Up to €20,000, you’ll pay 22% tax. Up to €30,000, you’ll pay 29% tax, and up to €40,000, you’ll pay 37% tax. Anything over €40,001 is counted as the highest bracket of 45%.

Anyone working self-employed in Greece must pay their taxes up front, but these are then offset against your annual tax returns. This can prove difficult in the first year because you need extra money available, but it gets easier once you generate income.

Obtaining a tax number

The AFM number is the Greek personal Tax Identification Number (TIN). You will need it when you connect utilities, buy property, apply for your driver’s license, etc.

To get your Tax ID (AFM), book an online appointment on myAADElive ; you can switch the language to English in the top right corner. For the appointment, you will need the following:

  • mobile number
  • ID or passport info
  • your digital application submission code

Taxes for foreign retirees

Greece has introduced a retirement income tax of 7%. To qualify, applicants must not have been tax resident for at least 5 of the previous six financial years. Also, applicants must receive their pension from a country in a double taxation agreement with Greece.

After you have applied for the alternative tax regime, the 7% tax rate will become effective the following tax year and will last for 15 years. After that, you will pay normal Greece tax rates on your income.

If you come from the UK, you can sometimes choose whether to pay your taxes in Greece or your original country. This will depend on which country has the lower tax rate, but be aware that you’ll be subject to the tax laws of the country where your tax is paid.

Business taxes in Greece

Greece’s current corporate tax rate is 24%, reduced from 28%. So, if you’re considering setting up a business in Greece, it only makes sense if their corporation tax rate is lower. For comparison, corporate tax is currently 19% in the UK and 28% in the USA.

How to open a bank account in Greece

To open a standard bank account while you’re living in Greece, you’ll need several documents from your home country, including:

  • Birth certificate
  • Recent utility bill
  • Salary evidence
  • Tax residency certificate
  • At least 12 months of bank statements

Standard bank accounts are needed to become a Greek tax resident and will come with a debit card for payments.

An alternative is to open an international bank account with a company like Barclays. Doing so can make sense if you’re planning on splitting money between countries, but you’ll still need a specifically Greek account for things like paying taxes and purchasing property.

Internet connection and mobile services

The most commonly used mobile service providers in Greece are Cosmote, Wind, and Vodafone. The one that offers the best coverage may depend on the specific area of Greece you’re visiting.

For northern Greece, Cosmote typically provides better coverage, while for islands or more remote regions, Vodafone and Cosmote offer the best coverage.

Internet speeds in Greece have significantly improved in recent years.

However, not all buildings have upgraded their infrastructure to match these faster speeds. So, the quality of your internet connection may vary depending on your specific location.

When renting a property, it is advisable to enquire about the quality of the internet connection in the building itself rather than in the area.

On average, the following speed is available in various areas:

Note: The internet speeds listed above are the average download speeds for residential connections. Prices are approximate and may vary depending on the service provider and subscription package.

Healthcare and health insurance in Greece

Greece has a reasonably good national healthcare system, which you can enter after three months of residency if you pay social insurance contributions.

Tip : If you’re from the UK and can apply for an S1 form, this will entitle you to state healthcare paid by the British government.

State-funded healthcare

To be eligible for state healthcare, you must be a taxpayer and a resident.

Greece’s healthcare is funded by EFKA – a public insurance system that receives social security payments.

If you work in Greece, whether as an employee or self-employed, you must register with Greek authorities and obtain a social insurance number. Once you start making social insurance contributions, you’ll be entitled to state-run healthcare on the same basis as a Greek citizen.

In most cases, foreign retirees have to take out private health insurance.

Private healthcare

Many expats opt for private or international health insurance because the private healthcare sector doesn’t have waiting lists and offers better facilities and English-speaking doctors. You’ll find more private options available in urban areas, but there are still private hospitals in rural areas, too.

To make sure you get the best value for money, compare international health insurance options from various providers to find the best deal.

It’s fairly standard for expats to switch to a local private health insurance plan once their residency is confirmed. You can expect to pay upwards of €130 per person per year, but this will depend on your age and any existing health conditions.

Accessing state healthcare

You’ll need to do the following:

  • Register as a resident.
  • Get a Greek social insurance (AMKA) number through your local citizens’ service center.
  • Register with the Greek National Organisation for Healthcare Services Provision ( EOPYY).

By registering with the EOPYY, you can see an EOPYY doctor for free; treatment in a state hospital is free if an EOPYY doctor has referred you.

However, there are some healthcare services that you will still need to contribute towards, such as prescriptions. Depending on the medicine, you’ll pay around 25% of the cost of prescriptions.

Where to live in Greece

Greece offers many different living environments, depending on your needs and goals. Here is a quick rundown of the best places to live in Greece.

The most vibrant – Athens

As the capital city, Athens has everything you could need. It’s close to the Greek islands and has good international connections. Add in the historical interest and bustling nightlife, and it’s got the potential to be at the top of most people’s lists.

Athens also has the most developed infrastructure, so it is the number one destination for digital nomads because of its fast internet and good travel connections.

Living in Greece

The cheapest – Sparta and Poligiros

House prices are surprisingly low in Sparta, but this is mainly because of its remote location. Nestled in the foothills of Mount Taygetos, residents can enjoy the lush countryside, quiet living, and close proximity to the sea.

Similarly, Poligiros sits about an hour’s drive from Thessaloniki, which has an international airport with good connections. The town also has an annual carnival in August that shouldn’t be missed.

The quietest – Ampelakia

Ampelakia is located in Thessaly, and this mountainous region means it’s fairly quiet with little tourism. The closest airport is in Volos, around 90 minutes away, meaning you still have good international connections but can enjoy some peace and quiet, too.

Greek islands

Among the most popular Greek islands for expats are Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete.

Santorini , with its iconic whitewashed buildings and breathtaking sunsets, entices expats with its unique charm and vibrant nightlife.

Mykonos , famous for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and stunning beaches, appeals to expats seeking a glamorous lifestyle and a thriving party scene. It is also the most expensive area in the whole country when it comes to real estate.

Crete , the largest of the Greek islands, allures expats with its affordability, good travel connections, decent infrastructure, and picturesque landscapes.

I am going to apply for a FIP Residence Permit and wanted to know if I can use my TRICARE For Life medical plan as proof of medical insurance? It provides medical coverage everywhere in the world as long as I pay the medical bill first then request reimbursement from TRICARE afterwards.

Hi Joe, It depends on the conditions of your insurance plan. Generally, for FIP visa a comprehensive EU-wide medical insurance coverage is required, including repatriation cover, with no co-payments, cooling off periods or coverage exclusions.Insurance policies requiring patients to pay more than 20% of a charge are not accepted. Hope this helps,

Hi John, If the schools is officially accredited, speak to their admission office. They will have a full list of documents and provide advice and support. Hope this helps

Great article! My brother and I inherited a building in Marousi with two apartments, but we love Naxos. What are the pros and cons of moving there vs staying in Athens? We are planning to spend most of the year there when we retire (I got my Greek citizenship (also Canadian and US) but we live in California, my wife is a Canadian American). Does Naxos have decent healthcare?

Hi Chris, Naxos is lovely, reasonably priced, and not as touristy as Santorini or Mykonos, but it still gets busy in the tourist season. There’s a general hospital there and healthcare clinics. There is an airport and regular connections to the port of Piraeus.

My husband and I bought a property in Greece a year ago and we want to move to Greece permanently. The house was less than 250k, I know it’s hard to get a visa. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sue, this might be helpful: https://expatra.com/greece/greece-residency-options/ Have a look to see if you can qualify for other options rather than the golden visa. Let us know if you need professional assistance with a FIP option.

I’m looking for a guide to applying for the heating allowance. Can you help please?

Hi, this might be helpful: https://kefaloniapulse.homeinkefalonia.properties/?p=41780

I inherited my mother’s house in Rhodos and I decided to spend most of my time living here. I’m 74 and retired with a pension and social security in the USA. My problem is leaving Greece and returning every 3 months is expensive.

Hi Jonathan, you need to apply for a residence permit. The Financially Independent Persons Visa will be your best route if you qualify financially. Let us know if you need legal advice and help with this, we can recommend somebody to help you.

I wonder if you can help me. I have a Greek residency permit (beige card) from when I lived in Greece in 2020 before brexit. But because I left in 2021 and didn’t return until now. I have lost my beneficy status. I intend to live in Greece to work and purchase property. So I need a long term residency permit. The police told me I had lost my rights and to go to the immigration/aslym center. But the British Consulate said The system allows for permitted absences from your country of residence. I’d encourage you to discuss your circumstances with the Greek authorities. I’m really confused what I need to do!! Nobody seems to know. Can you help at all?

Hi Gemma, the best way is probably to consult an immigration lawyer. British citizens who had lived in the EU pre-Brexit had a certain time window to settle their status and it looks like you missed it. However, a lawyer might offer some kind of solution. Or you can apply as a non-EU citizen and choose one of the options discussed in the guide.

Hi Jacob / Ola ,

I have found your website the most informative amidst a lot of confusing misinformation. I am planning on moving permanently to Kefalonia Greece , with my partner. Would you be so kind as to clarify some points please . We are both UK retired residents , and currently live there . My private pension pays me circa £1,500 a month , we have no other income . I do however have in excess of £ 50,000 disposable savings ( and funds under the golden visa threshold to purchase a property ). Would this meet the criteria for us both to gain a Type-D visa , and ultimately a full residents visa on arrival in Kefalonia . When applying for a residents Visa , do we again have to provide financial details to forfil the financial independent persons criteria or is it transferred from the Type-D application. Any other useful information you could provide , would be greatfully recieved .

Kind regards

I was just wondering if you know anything about the tax situation between Greece and the UK. I am hoping to move to Greece in the near future on a FIP visa. However, I will still be being paid in the UK by a UK company. I was just wondering if you know where I would have to pay tax? Also if the UK company would have to pay tax in Greece?

Thanks so much!

Thank you for the comment. Unfortunately, we cannot help you here as we are not tax specialists. Taxation of such kind is a highly complex matter and it’s best to consult a qualified tax advisor who understands international taxation rules and tax residency.
