Dominican Vacation

Bonao: The Cultural Epicenter Amidst Dominican Beauty

Tucked away amidst the heart of the Dominican Republic, Bonao blossoms as an epitome of cultural richness juxtaposed with Mother Nature’s magnificence. While the Dominican Republic is globally renowned for its pristine beaches and azure waters, Bonao introduces travelers to an entirely different facet: a realm where traditions thrive, art takes center stage, and natural wonders abound.

An Artist’s Dream: Bonao’s Vibrant Canvas

The essence of Bonao is deeply intertwined with its artistic pulse, resonating through its streets, studios, and spaces.

Centro Cultural Cándido Bidó : Celebrating the legacy of one of the Dominican Republic’s iconic artists, Cándido Bidó, this cultural center stands as a repository of his vivid creations, characterized by their luminous colors and distinctive techniques.

Urban Artistry : Roaming the streets of Bonao, one can’t help but be captivated by the myriad murals and artistic installations that tell tales of Bonao’s history, aspirations, and dreams.

Nature’s Tapestry: Exploring the Great Outdoors

Beyond the art, Bonao’s landscapes beckon nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Salto de Jima : Concealed within the lush folds of Bonao’s terrain, these cascading waterfalls serve as an oasis of tranquility, offering cool respite to visitors amidst nature’s embrace.

La Cueva Taina : Steeped in history, this cave, adorned with ancient Taino inscriptions, whispers stories of the Dominican Republic’s indigenous heritage.

Rancho Baiguate : An adventurer’s playground, the ranch facilitates a plethora of activities, from thrilling white-water rafting escapades to serene horseback rides, each promising a unique tryst with nature.

Celebrations that Resonate: Festivals and Traditions

At the heart of Bonao lies its vibrant spirit of celebration, manifesting through various festivals and traditions.

Carnaval de Bonao : A yearly extravaganza, this carnival drenches the city in a riot of colors, rhythms, and dances. Flamboyant masks and intricate costumes narrate tales from Bonao’s rich tapestry of folklore.

Feast of La Virgen de las Mercedes : A harmonious blend of devotion and festivity, this feast venerates the city’s patron saint, culminating in processions, music, and shared revelry.

Culinary Landscape: A Symphony of Flavors

Bonao’s culinary journey is a melange of traditional Dominican tastes, underpinned by the region’s agricultural bounty.

Dominican Cocoa : Venture into the world of chocolate with tours that detail the journey of cocoa from bean to bar, complete with tantalizing tasting sessions.

Local Gastronomy : The essence of Bonao finds its way into dishes like “la bandera” (rice, beans, and meat stew), “tostones” (fried plantains), and freshly caught river fish, each bursting with flavors and traditions.

Sustainability at the Forefront

With its wealth of natural treasures, Bonao ardently champions sustainable and eco-friendly tourism.

Nature-centric Tours : Eco-tours in Bonao are meticulously curated to highlight the region’s flora, fauna, and ecological wonders, all while emphasizing conservation and responsible exploration .

Artisanal Craftsmanship : Embracing sustainable practices, Bonao’s artisans craft souvenirs and artifacts using eco-friendly materials, from intricate jewelry to handcrafted textiles.

Concluding Thoughts: The Essence of Bonao

In its streets, murals, waterfalls, and celebrations, Bonao paints a picture that is both heartwarming and awe-inspiring. It’s a city that invites travelers to delve deeper, to look beyond the obvious, and to immerse themselves in a realm where every corner, color, and chord tells a story. As you depart from Bonao, you carry with you not just memories but also a piece of the city’s soul, forever etched in your heart.

Thousands of Hotel Workers Are on Strike This Labor Day

O n what was expected to be a record weekend for holiday travel in the U.S., more than 9,300 hotel workers remain on strike on Tuesday at 21 hotels from Boston and Greenwich, Conn., to Honolulu and Kauai, Hawaii, according to the Unite Here labor union.

About 840 workers at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor, the DoubleTree Hotel at Hilton Seattle Airport, Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center, and Westin Seattle were part of shorter work stoppages that had ended by Tuesday.

Strikes have also been authorized at hotels in New Haven, Conn.; Oakland, Calif.; and Providence, R.I.

Workers are striking for higher wages, increased staffing, and fairer workloads, plus the return to staffing levels and guest services that were cut during the Covid-19 pandemic, the union said.

The strike is affecting hotel properties run by Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott.

Michael D’Angelo, Hyatt’s head of labor relations in the Americas, said in a statement to Barron’s that “Our colleagues are the heart of our business, and Hyatt has a long history of cooperation with the unions that represent our employees, including Unite Here. We are disappointed that Unite Here has chosen to strike while Hyatt remains willing to negotiate. We look forward to continuing to negotiate fair contracts and recognize the contributions of Hyatt employees.”

A Hilton spokesperson told Barron’s in an email that the company “makes every effort to maintain a cooperative and productive relationship with the unions that represent some of our Team Members. We remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach fair and reasonable agreements that are beneficial to both our valued Team Members and to our hotels.”

Marriott hotels couldn’t be reached for comment.

Unite Here says not restoring daily hotel room cleaning, room service, and other services after the pandemic has cost workers jobs and income, and created “painful working conditions” for those handling increased workloads.

The strike coincided with a holiday weekend that the Transportation Security Administration and AAA Travel, among others, expect will set new records for domestic travel volumes.

TSA expects to screen more than 17 million travelers at airport checkpoints between Thursday, Aug. 29, and Wednesday, Sept. 4, during its busiest ever Labor Day travel period. The nearly 12.8 million people it screened through Monday is 5% higher than the number screened on those dates in 2023. AAA expects domestic travel to increase 9% from last year.

Unite Here says that although hotel room rates are at record highs, and the U.S. hotel industry reported more than $100 billion in gross operating profit in 2022, hotel staffing per occupied room was cut 13% from 2019 to 2022. It says hotel employees are working two jobs because their wages aren’t enough to cover the cost of living.

Hotel stocks are up this year amid rising travel demand. Shares of Hyatt are up 16% for the year; Hilton is up 20.6%; and Marriott is up 4%.

More than 10,000 workers walked off their jobs over the weekend, going on strike “because the hotel industry has gotten off track,” said Gwen Mills, International President of Unite Here, in a statement on Sunday. “During Covid, everyone suffered, but now the hotel industry is making record profits while workers and guests are left behind.”

The union said many hotel workers can no longer afford to live in the same cities where they work. Contracts are negotiated separately with each hotel company in each city, and the union said it has spent months trying to resolve workers’ issues.

The union is urging people not to eat, sleep, or meet at any hotel that is on strike, or where workers have been on strike, until they get a new contract.

Unite Here issued travelers a travel guide for people to look for alternative accommodations. The union says its members won record contracts after holding rolling strikes in Los Angeles last year and a 47-day strike at Detroit casinos.
