You will drive past many of Cozumel's landmarks, resorts, beach clubs, dive, and snorkel sites in the Marine Park before arriving at the South Drop-Off. This underwater island structure provides perfect fishing grounds and extends over several miles and when fishing near the drop-off, the depth is between 100 and 3'000 feet.Your crew will then start to rig the fishing gear, for bait we mostly use rigged or unrigged ballyhoos and plastics, depending on the fish we are looking for, normally with 4 to 6 lines in the water including outriggers and downriggers. Trolling is done at approximately 8 MPH which allows for a smooth ride while enjoying the music. Needless to say, this is an excursion that immerses you in the complete Cozumel experience.

8. A Taste of the Finer Side

Having your own tropical island is the sort of thing that dreams are made of. Fortunately, the All Inclusive Passion Island by Power Catamaran excursion gives you a chance to experience the finer side of life by providing you access to Isla Pasion, a small and perfect oasis just a short catamaran cruise from the shores of Cozumel.

The site has several structures you can explore, including El Castillo, which sits atop a cliff 40 feet (12 meters) above the Caribbean Sea.

If you want to learn more about Maya culture and history, there is a small on-site museum with some interesting artifacts. You can also stroll along the beach below the ruins or go for a swim to see the ruins from the water.

Some Cozumel tours combine visiting the Tulum ruins with other attractions. For example, this excursion takes you to both the Tulum and Coba ruins and ends with swimming in a cenote.

This tour is 1.5 hours, starting with meeting the stingrays in waist-deep water for 30 minutes. After feeling the rays softly brush against your legs, you’ll get to move to a deeper enclosure where you can snorkel with rays and a myriad of colorful coral reef fish.

In our opinions, Chankanaab deserves its reputation as one of the best Carnival excursions in Cozumel.

Be prepared, because Chankanaab National Park isn’t your normal national park. A day pass to Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park gives you sea lion and manatee shows, a botanical garden, a beach club, a crocodile farm, and access to the beach and marine park. This is a good option if you just want to lounge by the pool, snorkel offshore, soak up some sun, and take a dip in the lagoon.

However, if you’re looking for a Cozumel excursion that includes more adventure, Chankanaab has more to offer you. There may be an additional fee, but you can snorkel with manatees , scuba, snuba, swim with dolphins , enjoy a tequila tasting, participate in a temazcal , and more.

6. Tour the island of Cozumel

Isla Mujeres is a picturesque small island not far from Cozumel, famous for its white sandy beaches, Mayan temple and sea turtle sanctuary.

If you’re keen to visit Isla Mujeres as a day trip from Cozumel, one of the best ways is on a scenic catamaran tour. Spend the day relaxing in the sunshine, snorkeling, and taking in some of the most idyllic Caribbean ocean views.

There are several tour options to choose from. This 10-hour catamaran tour with lunch and an open bar , includes hotel transfers and stops off for snorkeling at a coral reef park on the way to Isla Mujeres. Prepare to be mesmerized by all the fish that gather near the boat as your guide sprinkles fish food into the sea. Enjoy a buffet lunch on the beach and sit under a palm tree if it gets too sunny.

Another option is a flexible and high-speed round-trip ferry ride from Cancun to Isla Mujeres . This luxury ferry ride features reclining leather seats, a kids area and a snack bar as well as other amenities. Carrying up to 800 passengers, there are multiple ferry crossing times each day which means that you can easily visit Isla Mujeres as a day trip and plan your own itinerary while there. It is, however, advisable to book your ferry tickets in advance.

9. Go on an Atlantis Submarine expedition

Atlantis Sub on the sea floor

Want to explore the undersea world but stay dry? The Atlantis Submarine is perfect for you! This 63-foot-long, 48-passenger submarine will take you on an underwater tour of Cozumel’s stunning reef system.

You don’t need to be a certified diver to go on this tour, and the submarine provides all the necessary safety gear. The submarine descends to a depth of 100 feet (30 meters), where you will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of marine life, including sharks, rays, eels, and turtles.

The Atlantis Sub is a great activity for families with children, as it is both safe and educational. Your knowledgeable guide will provide lots of insightful information as you journey along the reef.

10. Enjoy a beach break at Playa Mia Grand Beach & Water Park

The beachfront at Playa Mia Water Park in Cozumel

A day pass to Playa Mia gives you access to one of the best public beaches in Cozumel Mexico. Playa Mia has more than 20 water park attractions, lounge chairs on a white sand beach, kayaks and sailboats, a kids’ playground, a swim-up pool bar, and more.

You can also upgrade to an all-you-can-eat buffet, open bar, Hobie cat and clear kayak access, towels, lockers, and beach umbrellas.

11. Scuba dive the second-largest coral reef in the world

The clear turquoise waters around Cozumel are the home of the second-largest barrier reef in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. With visibility over 100 feet, this makes Cozumel a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Palancar Reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including turtles, stingrays, eels, and over 500 species of fish. The reef is also home to a shipwreck, the El Cid, which sunk in 1961.

On this two-tank scuba diving tour , you’ll dive with a local guide who shares commentary about the marine ecosystem in Mexico. The excursion includes two tanks for two dives, a guide, and boat transportation from Cozumel

Or if you prefer, you can do a one-tank reef dive with full-day access to Chankanaab National Park . This is the perfect scuba diving excursion for certified and noncertified divers. You can easily enjoy the tropical fish, underwater sculptures, and coral reef formations, then relax at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park. Enjoy full access to the amenities including the beach, hammocks, shaded palapas, sea lion show, and crocodile exhibits.

12. Snorkel in the Caribbean

Surrounded by coral reefs that are brimming with brightly colored marine life, snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on Cozumel. If you want to experience the best snorkeling spots and learn about the local biodiversity, then this fully guided half day snorkeling tour to Palancar and Columbia reefs, El Cielo Sandbar and El Cielito Beach is an unmissable opportunity.

Palancar reef on the southwest of Cozumel is known for its abundant marine life including sunfish, parrotfish, sea turtles, moray eels, nurse sharks and barracuda. The Colombia reef is well known for frequent turtle sightings and dive-throughs, and the El Cielo Sandbar is a shallow water area that’s popular for seeing large starfish in magnificent turquoise waters. And the pristine El Cielito Beach lives up to its name of being a “little heaven”.

13. Zipline through the jungle

If you enjoy adventure and fancy an adrenaline rush, then you might like to try ziplining through the Mexican jungle on Cozumel .

You’ll get to see Cozumel from a different perspective above the trees from 6 different canopy platforms where you’ll then zip along lines in a harness. This is a great thrill-seeking activity for families and children and usually lasts around an hour.

Your tour starts with a safety briefing where you’ll be given a helmet. You’ll then climb up about 45 feet to the first platform where your harness will be secured. And then you can start cruising above the trees on the zip lines, with views of the ocean in the distance.

14. Go horseback riding on the beach

Person riding a horse on the beach

With miles of white sandy beaches, Cozumel is an island paradise for horseback riding. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a novice, you can take a horseback beach riding tour that pairs you with a horse for your skill level.

Enjoy 30-minutes in the saddle on Mr Sanchos Beach where you’ll pass mangroves, forests, farms and sparkling Caribbean waters. This tour is perfect for families, couples and friends, although it is not recommended if you have back problems, are pregnant, or are over 200 pounds.

15. Explore cenotes and underground caves

Yucatan cenote with grab rope

Cenotes are naturally formed water reservoirs or sinkholes that are common in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Formed by limestone bedrock that collapsed leaving a hole or underground water cave, cenotes come in many shapes and sizes – some forming underground labyrinths of connected caves.

You can spend 3 to 3.5 hours in a small group tour exploring the cenote at Rio Secreto in Playa del Carmen. This cenote is dramatically decorated with natural stalactites and stalagmites, perfect for taking plenty of incredible instagram-worthy photos.

Your tour leader will guide you through a network of rivers and underground caves, after kitting you out with a wetsuit for swimming. After all the swimming, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite – luckily your light lunch offers lots of local foods.

16. ATV adventure/dune buggy excursion

two people riding on atv vehicles

Are you an adrenaline junkie or an outdoor adventure enthusiast? Then you might like to combine three of the top adventure tours near Cozumel in one action-packed day tour. This 4-hour family-friendly tour includes ziplining, riding through the jungle on a 4×4 ATV, and exploring an underwater cenote.

After being collected from your hotel in Cancun or Riviera Maya, you’ll  be taken to the heart of the jungle where you’ll zip through the air between canopy platforms, along 6 zip lines and 3 interactive bridges.

You’ll then have 50 minutes to explore the jungle on a Honda 220cc ATV with your guide, getting a glimpse of the local wildlife and scenery.

Finish off your tour with a refreshing dip in a Mayan cenote at “Ruta de los Cenotes” before being dropped back at your hotel.

17. Visit Mayan Bee Sanctuary

Two people learning about the Mayan Bee Sanctuary

Bees are one of the most famous insects on the planet and according to Mayan folklore, their honey is a gift from the gods.

Learn about bees and the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey, as well and how ancient Mayans valued honey for its healing powers when you visit the Mayan Bee Sanctuary in Cozumel .

Your guide will explain how bee hives are intricately structured, how colonies organizational structures work, and the role of the queen bee and her drones, the guardian, and the princesses.

And at the end of the tour you’ll also get to sample some different honey varieties and learn about what other products bees can help us to make.

18. Take a glass-bottom boat ride

If you want to observe sea life from the ocean, then a glass bottom boat ride is a great way to do it.

Perfect for non-swimmers as a way to get a glimpse of underwater life, you can hop on a Cozumel 2-hour glass bottom boat tour that includes optional snorkeling at 3 of the island’s best-known reefs.

This glass-bottom boat has a sun deck for those who want to catch some rays and enjoy the above-water views. And its glass bottom allows you to watch life underwater without having to get wet.

19. Play at Xcaret Park

Xcaret Park on Riviera Maya Mexico

Xcaret Park on the Maya Riviera is one of the top Yucatan Peninsula tourist attractions. Boasting over 40 attractions, this expansive nature park is definitely a place you can spend a full day exploring and being entertained.

That’s why purchasing the full day Xcaret Park pass —which includes lunch PLUS a nighttime cultural show—may be the highlight of your vacation.

Some of the top things to do at Xcaret include the Coral Reef Aquarium, the Manatee Lagoon, the Butterfly Pavilion and Spider Monkey Island.

Float along a network of below ground-level rivers that flow into a cenote; relax on pristine beaches and snorkel in sheltered coves; visit a Mayan village and Mexican cemetery; take a raft tour down the Paradise River; explore authentic Mayan temple ruins; walk along lush jungle trails; and explore Jaguar Island. There are an abundance of things to do and see at Xcaret – which means you’ll have to plan your day carefully.

There are also a range of activities in the park that are an additional charge, but worth considering. For example you can swim with dolphins, swim with nurse sharks, or have a close encounter with a stingray.

The evening performance with dinner is another highlight of visiting Xcaret. The Xcaret México Espectacular will give you an overview of ancient history and folklore at the Gran Tlachco arena where over 300 performers in bright costumes will entertain you.

Is it better to book excursions through the cruise ship?

You can take excursions through the cruise line, book tours yourself, or visit Cozumel attractions on your own with advice from a good travel guide .

Each option has pros and cons. Your decision will depend on your budget, how much time you want to spend onshore, and whether you prefer the convenience of having everything taken care of for you.

Here are some things to consider:

Booking excursions through the cruise line

  • Good if you like traveling with a large group
  • Can get a full refund if the weather is bad
  • Transportation, guide, and admission fees are often included
  • More likely to get back on the ship on time
  • Can be more expensive than booking a tour yourself
  • You may not be able to customize the itinerary to your interests
  • You may not get the same level of service as you would with a private tour guide
  • You may not be able to hear your guide
  • May require a minimum number of people to run

Booking tours yourself

  • Can be cheaper than booking through the cruise line
  • More options to choose from
  • You can customize the itinerary to your interests and any special needs
  • Your guide can answer all your questions
  • You can choose smaller tour groups or go solo with a private guide
  • A smaller group size means you can spend more time at each stop
  • You can usually change plans if you want to stay longer or leave early
  • Have to do your research to find reputable tour operators
  • No guarantee you’ll get back on the ship on time
  • Admission and transportation fees are not always included
  • Doesn’t usually have a minimum number of people required to run
  • Usually can’t be canceled at the last minute

Going on your own

  • Can be the cheapest option
  • You’re free to come and go as you please
  • You have total control over your itinerary
  • You’re responsible for getting back on the ship on time
  • It may be more difficult to find your way around
  • Admission fees are not always included
  • May require more research in advance

12 Best Cozumel Shore Excursions

Last updated on September 24th, 2023 at 09:41 pm

Cozumel Mexico is the most popular cruise destination in the Caribbean , with over 3 million visitors annually and a favorite among the major cruise lines.

Taking a shore excursion during your time here is definitely worth it, no matter the excursion you choose.

Cozumel itself is an island off the coast of Playa del Carmen Mexico, with 3 cruise ship ports.

The first and most popular cruise terminal in Cozumel is the International Pier, located about 3 miles from the downtown area of San Miguel. Filled with shops and restaurants, it’s a wonderful gateway to your visit to Cozumel.

The second pier is located in downtown San Miguel, which is the largest city on Cozumel island. The pier is directly across from shopping, restaurants, a Starbucks and is a popular spot to catch a taxi for a tour of the island.

The third cruise terminal on Cozumel, Puerta Maya, is used only by Carnival Cruise Lines. This exciting port is filled with over 50 shops and restaurants and is your gateway to your Cozumel shore excursion.

Cozumel in general is a safe island with most living on the island employed in the tourism industry. It’s far enough away from the mainland that anyone wanting to cause trouble with petty crime will not make the effort or expense to get over to Cozumel.

Touring around the island without a shore excursion or group tour is feasible and safe, unlike other destinations in Mexico, however, if you want to make the most of your visit to Cozumel, a shore excursion is suggested.

Cozumel Cruise Port Guide | 10 Best Things To Do In Cozumel

Punta Langosta cruise terminal, Cozumel cruise port

Welcome to Cozumel cruise port!

Nestled off the northeastern coast of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is an island of cheerful people, salsa vibes, stunning nature, and rich Mayan cultural heritage. The port of Cozumel ranks among the largest and most visited ports in the Caribbean.

This article will provide you with detailed information about Cozumel cruise terminals along with some helpful, insider travel tips. And if you want to read about the best things to do on this incredible island – check out my article 10 Best Things to Do in Cozumel Cruise Port

Cozumel Cruise Port

Due to the large number of cruise liners coming to Cozumel daily, Cozumel cruise port consists of 3 cruise terminals , located within walking/short driving distance of each other.

One of them (Punta Langosta) is located in Cozumel’s capital city – San Miguel de Cozumel, whereas the other two (International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya) are situated within less than a 10-minute driving distance from the town.

Cozumel cruise port map

1. Punta Langosta Cruise Terminal

This terminal is located within walking distance of San Miguel downtown and its main attractions, shops, bars, and restaurants. The cruise lines such as Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises , and several others normally dock here (this can change, though, so always check beforehand).

Upon exiting the cruise terminal, you’ll spot a long street filled with shopping malls, souvenir stores, cafes, restaurants, and several historic landmarks. If you turn right, within a short distance, you will reach some of the best ocean-view cafes and bars, such as No Name Bar, crew members’ favorite spot with pool facilities, fantastic food, Caribbean vibes, and a laid-back atmosphere.

Some great eateries and hotels are located here, including Rock ‘n Java Bar & grill, Subway, Hotel Barracuda , Jeanie’s (restaurant), Rolandi’s (Italian restaurant), El Muellecito (Seafood restaurant), La Internacional Cerveceria (great craft beer!), Cozumel Palace 4-star hotel resort and El Cantil Condominiums.  Here, you’ll also find car rentals, tour operator offices, shopping malls, and beautiful parks.

If you turn left upon exiting the Punta Langosta cruise terminal, you’ll spot a long boardwalk offering fantastic sea views, lined with shopping malls, brand stores (Tanzanite International, EFFY, Victoria’s Secret, Cartier, Del Sol), souvenir shops, hotel resorts , tour booths, restaurants, and bars (Hard Rock café).

Here, you can explore some historic landmarks and monuments, such as the Coral Reefs Monument, the Mexican War Memorial, the Birds Monument, and the Museum of Cozumel. Housed in a beautiful bright building overlooking the sea, the museum features a large collection of artifacts and exhibits on the island’s history and an amazing restaurant where you can indulge in the Mexican specialties while enjoying the stunning ocean views.

In front of the Punta Langosta cruise terminal, you can find shops, bars, restaurants (Diamond International, Starbucks), Punta Langosta Mall with a cinema, and a bit further away – the historic landmarks (Iglesia de San Miguel), markets, and parks. Taxis are everywhere, prices are reasonable, however, I would suggest you always agree on the price first.

Cozumel Ferry – The main ferry terminal is located within a 5-minute walk from Punta Langosta and offers daily ferry transportation between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. It is easy to find, just turn left upon exiting the Punta Langosta terminal and you’ll spot the ferries close by.

There are two ferry companies providing round-trip transport from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen: Winjet and Ultramar . The ride takes about 40 minutes one-way (or less, depending on the company), and ferries run every hour (sometimes they run less frequently, make sure you check the Cozumel Ferry Schedule for more details).

When you are buying the ferry ticket, make sure you buy a one-way ticket , as the companies don’t accept each other’s tickets. You can check the cost and ferry schedule on Winjet and Ultramar’s official websites.

Note: Although the official currency in Cozumel is the Mexican Peso (MXN), U.S. dollars are widely accepted. 1 USD equals 16.80 MXN.

Ferries are double-deckers, modernly equipped, and feature a cafeteria where you can buy coffee and snacks. Keep in mind that a ferry ride can be extremely bumpy (when I say extremely, I mean that I’ve seen dozens of people throwing up each time I went to the mainland), so seasickness pills are highly recommended. Normally they give you a plastic bag upon embarking.

On the mainland side, the ferry docks a 5-minute walk from Playa del Carmen city center and its shopping streets, attractions, bars, and restaurants. Plaza Playacar is the place where you usually meet your tour guides for the mainland tours, and it is located within a 5-minute walk from the main square.

Watch my YouTube video on Punta Langosta cruise terminal!

2. International Cruise Terminal

This terminal is located less than a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel downtown (around 4 km/2.5 miles). It consists of two piers and is usually used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships.

In front of the terminal, you’ll spot a spacious area featuring a large Margaritaville, usually filled with cheerful people dancing salsa, drinking tequila, or eating delicious Mexican food. There are plenty of tour booths, shops, several bars, and restaurants (Bar Mandy, Senor Frog’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp…) in this area. This is where you meet your tour operators when joining the shore excursions. Normally they hold the signs with tour names, so you can easily spot them.

If you are taking the mainland tour, the ferry picks you up at the pier (no need to go to the San Miguel ferry terminal). However, if you decide to go to the mainland on your own, you need to take a taxi to the ferry terminal in San Miguel. The taxi ride lasts less than 10 minutes.

Upon exiting the terminal area, you’ll see many taxi vehicles and mini-buses, as well as large Mercado Popular and Royal Village shopping malls. This area is packed with brand stores (Tag Heuer, Diamonds International, Harley Davidson) and fabulous bars/restaurants (Hard Rock café).

Celebrity Edge in International cruise terminal in Cozumel

3. Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal

This cruise terminal is located a 5-minute walking distance from the International Cruise Terminal and a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel. Puerta Maya is the largest of all terminals and Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock here ( Carnival, Princess, Costa…).

The terminal consists of three piers. Here you’ll find over fifty brand stores (Cariloha and Del Sol, Tanzanite International…) and shops selling souvenirs and authentic handicrafts, as well as restaurants and bars (Three Amigos is one of the most popular ones – it offers a great selection of tequilas, beers, and yummy food).

In this area, you meet your tour operators for the tours, and ferries normally come to the terminal to pick up the cruise passengers joining the ship shore excursions.

When you exit the terminal, you’ll see large parking with many taxis, a few shopping malls, restaurants, and a flea market.

Ultimate Guide to the Cozumel Cruise Port and Breakdown of Shore Excursion Options

PIctures from Shore Excursions in the Cozumel Cruise Port, Mexico

If you’re booking any type of Western Caribbean cruise, there is a very good chance that it’s going to stop at the Cozumel cruise port. In fact, it’s such a popular destination that Cozumel has space to dock as many as 8 cruise ships each day. There are 3 separate piers for the boats to dock at. The northern most pier has 2 spaces and is located closest to the downtown area. There are also two piers that are located further south. These two piers are located in a port-area and can hold up to 6 different cruise ships. If you’re like us and tend to cruise on Carnival, then you will most likely be at the Southern-most pier which is right next to the Three Amigos restaurant.

There is absolutely no reason to worry about cruising to Cozumel. I believe it is perfect for a beginner’s cruise port. It’s tropical, it’s warm, it’s safe, and everyone speaks English so you won’t have any trouble getting around.

Map of Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island off the eastern coast of Mexico. To help plan, I’ve included two maps, one close-up of Cozumel and one with some of the shore excursions that you can do on the mainland of Mexico.

Shore Excursions and DIY Options for Cozumel:

I’ve been to Cozumel three times. Once I took a Carnival cruise ship excursion and two times I did different DIY Options. I’ll go over my experiences in each, but first a summary of what you can expect in terms of Shore Excursion Options:

The cruise lines offer about 50-60 shore excursion options. I would break them down into the following categories.

  • Mexican Cultural/Historical Sites  (Chichen Itza, Tulum, San Gervasio)
  • Mexico’s Natural Wonders (Cenotes, Underground Rivers)
  • Mexican Ecological Parks (Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Xplor, Xenses)

Typical Cruise Water Activities & Beach Breaks

One of the main things that you should consider when looking at Cozumel shore excursions is time, Cozumel is a little island off the main land of Mexico. Almost every activity that is located on the main land requires you to take a ferry to Playa del Carmen. The ferry ride significantly cuts into the amount of time that you get to spend having fun. Yes, really. So make sure you read the fine print to know what you are signing up for.

Cozumel is also a great port to DIY. I’ve got two different, inexpensive options if you want to skip the shore excursion and go exploring by yourself!

Mexican Cultural/ Historical Sites:

Chichen itza.

The main cultural site for the Yucatan is Chichen Itza. If you’ve never been and you like ruins, I cannot recommend this site enough. It’s stunning! But I’ll be honest with you, is Cozumel the best way to see Chichen Itza? That depends! Chichen Itza is about 8 hours round-trip from Cozumel and only allows for about 45 minutes on site (which is not much at all since it’s a whole complex). So if Cozumel is the closest you will ever get to Chichen Itza and you’re cool with long bus rides, then go for it. But if you think you may find yourself staying on the Riviera Maya at some point in the future, or visiting one of the closer cruise ports (Progresso or Costa Maya), then I’d hold off on this one. We stayed at an all-inclusive in Puerto Aventuras and took a day-trip to Chichen Itza and had enough time to swim in a Cenote as well! You can read all about it here.

Note: If you’re feeling really fancy, some cruises offer an airplane excursion to visit Chichen Itza!

cozumel port excursions

Tulum is another popular Mayan Ruin, which in my opinion is easier to see when staying on the Riviera Maya and not just visiting Cozumel for the day. That being said, Tulum is slightly closer to Cozumel than Chichen Itza and it’s located on a beach, so you have about 1.5 hours to walk around the complex and to enjoy the beautiful beach. Tulum is much closer to Costa Maya’s Cruise Port, so that may also be an option for you.

cozumel port excursions

San Gervasio

Much less popular, these Mayan ruins are actually located on the island of Cozumel and only require about a half-day to visit. We’ve never had the opportunity to visit these lesser known ruins but would love to hear in the comments about your experience!

Mexico’s Natural Wonders:

In terms of natural wonders, only one phenomenon really comes to mind when I’m thinking about Mexico – Cenotes. Cenotes are giant sinkholes caused by weaknesses in the limestone underground that fill up with water. There are cenotes all throughout the Yucatan peninsula. Many of these are open to the public for swimming and there’s at least one that features a restaurant.

We were able to visit a cenote when we went on our excursion to Chichen Itza. The Ik Kil cenote is about 200 ft across and 130 feet deep with a stairway that winds all the way to the water swimming platform (85 ft.) The water is chilly which is unsurprising because there isn’t a lot of sunlight that gets into the bottom of the cave. It was a lot of fun visiting and the vines hanging down are really neat.

Unfortunately the cruise ship excursions from Cozumel don’t stop at the Ik Kil cenote because there isn’t enough time.If you want to visit a cenote your best bet is is to look at some of the underground river tours. For example, Carnival offers an “Amazing Secret River” tour which takes you to the Mexico mainland to the Rio Secreto Nature Reserve where you get to explore underground caves and swim in a cenote. If you’ve done one of these underground river tours, we would love to hear about it in the comments below!

cozumel port excursions

Mexican Ecological Parks:

One unique feature in Mexico is a group of Ecological parks. Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Xplor, and Xenses are separate parks, so you would have to choose just one for your day. We have only visited Xel-Ha so far. Xel-Ha is essentially a natural water-park. It features a lazy-river which is a real river, a zip-line, cenotes to swim in, and several animal encounters. Each park costs roughly $100 admission, but many of the park’s activities require additional cash. We had a great day and even paid extra to do the Sea Trek which lets you walk on the ocean floor with helmets on to breathe.

One of the negative things that I have heard about the Ecological Parks excursions is just the time it takes to get to the park. All three are located on the mainland and the travel time getting from the cruise ship to the park significantly cuts into your time spent at the park. We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Xel-Ha (although we visited from an all-inclusive in Puerto Aventuras) and we cannot wait to visit the other parks.

Summary of the Different Parks:

Each of these parks is quite different and it’s hard to tell the differences upfront. Here’s my take on what you can expect from each park:

  • Xel-Ha – Described as a waterpark. Basically a massive lazy river with water activities and ziplining all along the sides. Animals are primarily water animals like dolphins.
  • Xcaret – More animals (big cats, birds, butterflies) and shows. Has underground rivers to swim and snorkel.
  • Xplor – For Adventure lovers. 4×4’s, ziplines, underground rivers. Supposed to get the adrenaline going.
  • Xenses -Half day park with activities that are designed to wake up your senses. Think dark caves, light and color shows, and water attractions.

Have you been to any of the ecological parks? Did you enjoy Xel-Ha like we did? What about the other parks? Tell us in the comments below!

cozumel port excursions

Cozumel has all of the typical cruise-ship water activities that you see at any of the ports. You can snorkel, scuba, you can ride a catamaran, swim with dolphins, visit sea turtles, take a submarine ride, and pretty much anything else you can think of. The only excursion of this type that I’ve participated in is the Catamaran, Snorkel, and Beach Break which I describe below.

Pretty much all of these shore excursion options are also available at other ports in the Caribbean. So if you don’t do them in Cozumel, don’t worry, you have other opportunities. For example:

  • Atlantis Submarine – Also in Barbados
  • Snorkeling – Amazing in Honduras
  • Scuba – Supposed to be Awesome in Belize
  • Catamaran – Pretty much everywhere – we enjoyed the catamaran at St. Kitts !
  • Swim with Dolphins – Also in Costa Maya , Jamaica , Bahamas , and probably others!

I did see that Cozumel has a really fun looking high speed boat. Has anyone gone on this tour? I’d love to hear about it!

Catamaran, Snorkel & Beach Break

The first time I visited Cozumel we booked a catamaran and beach break excursion through the cruise line. It was my first trip so I really enjoyed the catamaran ride, snorkeling, and the beach. I believe this excursion compared to other catamaran excursions out there, it didn’t stand out as being good or bad. It’s been a few years since I did this tour but I remember seeing lots of fish and also the guide pointing out things like stingrays. The food at the beach was also comparable to other places in the Caribbean. It was a simple, filling lunch, but nothing spectacular. And on the beach there was a guy carrying an iguana around who would let you take pictures with it for money. On the way back the rum punch was flowing and my friends had a great time drinking punch and dancing. I recommend this tour for beginning cruisers – it was fun.

What about you? Did you go on any shore excursions in Cozumel that you thought were just amazing? Let us know in the comments so we can plan our next trip!

DIY Cozumel Shore Excursion Options:

If you’re not feeling excited about any of the cruise line shore excursion options, or you’re just looking for a way to save some money, I have two options for DIY shore excursions in Cozumel. Both are easy, inexpensive, and offer different experiences.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is a beautiful beach and swimming pool that welcomes cruise ship travelers. It is the place to go if your ideal day involves palm trees, soft sand, and a beach lounger.

Getting There: To get there, all you have to do is take a taxi from the port. If your cruise ship parks at the southernmost pier like ours did, the taxi stand is easily found. Just walk past the shops area (away from the shore) and you’ll see the taxis lined up. A taxi of 4 people only costs $15 to get to Paradise Beach (as of January 2019). Within 15 minutes of hailing your taxi, you will find yourself escorted to a beach chair and then free to enjoy yourself for as long as you want.

Costs: The entrance fee to Paradise Beach is $3 per person. If you want to participate in the inflatables (they have probably 20 different ones), then the cost is $18 per person. You also agree to spend at least $10 per person on food when visiting Paradise Beach. Drinks are between $10-15 each and the food is in the same range, so it’s pretty easy to meet the $10 minimum and still feel like you had a relatively inexpensive day.

We thought Paradise Beach was absolutely beautiful and the food was great too! Sorry that I didn’t get a picture of the pool area, just know that it’s lovely!

Also, I thought this blog was a fantastic reference when planning our trip to Paradise Beach and just wanted to give credit!

cozumel port excursions

The Money Bar

If you are interested in doing something on your own and are more into snorkeling, then the Money Bar is another great choice. The Money Bar is a restaurant and bar located right on the beach where you can eat a nice lunch, relax, and spend time swimming and snorkeling.

Getting There: To get to the Money Bar all you need to do is go all the way through the cruise terminal and catch a taxi outside (same as for Paradise Beach).

Costs: No entry fee, your only expense is the taxi and food or drinks!

Bring: Your own snorkel gear. I don’t remember there being a place to rent gear. And water socks!

There really isn’t much beach at the Money Bar, but if you want to snorkel the water is very shallow but they have a lot of concrete structures in the water that the urchins and small fish like to hide around. I highly recommend wearing water socks to protect your feet because it is very, very rocky.

I don’t remember much about the food at Money Bar, but I know friends who absolutely loved the Ceviche and look forwarding to going back.

cozumel port excursions

Cozumel Port Area – Things to Know/Do

Restaurants.

Three Amigos –  The very first restaurant at the end of the pier is the Three Amigos and I highly recommend stopping there if you have some extra time in the afternoon. They have a full drink menu and offer lots of Mexican dishes which make a yummy afternoon snack. They also have a few picture spots onsite.

Shopkeepers are aggressive in many Caribbean islands, but I think more so in Cozumel than anywhere else. Don’t be surprised if you are constantly yelled at and asked to visit their shops. If you aren’t interested, a polite “No, Thank you” works just fine.

Ride a Rickshaw

Okay, the cruise ship pier isn’t very long, but sometimes you are just too exhausted from a week of cruising. Or sometimes your boyfriend sprains his ankle the day before you leave for your cruise. Either way, the rickshaw is a fun, inexpensive way to get a lift down the pier. We had fun crossing it off our to-do list!

cozumel port excursions

My Time Spent on the Island:

  • 1 day cruise port in February 2013, on the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas
  • 1 day cruise port in January 2015, on the Carnival Magic

Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise Day in Port

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

There are so many things to do that it’s tough to decide the best things to do in Cozumel, especially when you only have one day in port.

Here are our best suggestions on what to do in Cozumel in only one day.

Almost all short cruises from South Florida or the Gulf states plus Western Caribbean itineraries include a visit to Cozumel. This year, Cozumel expects nearly 4 million cruise passengers. I t’s no wonder why.

Isla Pasion Cozumel

It’s hard to believe that this diverse, laid-back island in the Yucatan Peninsula is just 12 miles off the east coast of mainland Mexico. It’s also a jumping off point for a ferry to Playa del Carmen on the mainland and excursions to the Mayan Ruins.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel

I love a day in Cozumel.  From gorgeous uncrowded secluded beaches or famous beach clubs to world-class snorkeling or discovering authentic Mexican cuisine, there’s so much to do in Cozumel on a cruise day. I’ve narrowed down the list to places I’ve seen, dined, shopped, and shore tours I’ve taken.

READ NEXT:  Cozumel Snorkeling Tour with Lunch Review

Since your cruise ship is stopping in Cozumel for only one day, you better make the most your time! So let’s get started. Here are my picks for some of the  best things to do in Cozumel and what makes this tiny island so unique.

A Little History of Cozumel May Help You Decide

Though nearly a 3,000 year-old civilization, Cozumel was a commercial and ceremonial center during the classic Mayan period about 250 to 900 A.D. During this time the Mayans created many of its sacred archeological sites dotted across the island.

Mayans would travel to and from the mainland by canoe and considered this land to have religious significance.

Cozumel was also once a refuge for pirates and trading ships, giving them a place to replenish and feel protected by the dangerous coral reef. Eventually, in 1518, with the first Spanish expedition, the Spaniards occupy the land, finally making it the most prominent island inhabited by Mexico.

Now, Cozumel is a  thriving tourist location for its beautiful sandy beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, cuisine and much more.

Where Your Ship Might Dock in Cozumel

Your cruise ship will dock at one of three Cozumel cruise ports, all located on the island’s western side. These include Punta Langosta, International pier, and Puerta Maya. Where you dock could depend on what cruise line you are sailing.

Think of Punta Langosta as the downtown pier. The International Pier is three miles south, and then Puerta Maya is the furthest outside of town, nearly five miles away. From Puerta Maya, it’s too far to walk into town, but you’re closer to the beach clubs.

Punta Langosta

Punta Langosta is Cozumel’s local downtown pier. If your ship docks at this port, you will be in the center of it all and only a few minutes walk to downtown San Miguel, the largest city on the island.

Leaving the ship, kiosks and vendors will filter you through the Punta Langosta Mall full of shops and restaurants. And souvenir stands. Almost all Norwegian Cruise Line ships will dock here, assuming there’s space. Plus, Disney and MSC also use this port.

Punta Langosta Mall has all the usual Caribbean shops; Cariloha, Del Sol, Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds. Take time to venture into the smaller shops. Be prepared to haggle for the price; it’s what they do. But don’t try to bargain too low – everyone has to earn a living.

If you need any drugstore items, there is at least one pharmacy in the mall. There’s no haggling over prices at any of the pharmacies.

International Pier

International Pier Cozumel

The International Pier is the middle-island cruise ship port. You’ll probably dock here if you’re cruising with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity.

You can still walk to Punta Langosta and San Miguel from this port, but it’s usually too hot to walk into town and back to your ship. For a few dollars, it’s easier to hop into a taxi for the ride downtown or back to your ship.

The shopping mall across the street, Royal Village Shopping Mall, gets mixed reviews from customers. All the usual Caribbean shops are here, too.

If you decide to walk into town, the pedestrian sidewalk is reasonably wide on the sea side. Along the way, you’ll see waterfront restaurants and bars on the other side of the street but be extra careful when you cross the busy road.

The International Pier is also home to colorful architectural sites and a giant shopping center and places to eat and drink. This is the only drawback to cruising with Royal Caribbean and brands.

Punta Langosta and Puerta Maya have a nicer infrastructure complex. Maybe that will change.

Puerta Maya

Puerta Maya Cruise Pier in Cozumel Mexico with Carnival ship.

The farthest port from downtown San Miguel is Puerta Maya , about five miles south. This is where Carnival ships dock and most of their brands dock here, too.

After you leave your ship, you’ll find a lush garden full of flowers and plants and the most extensive shopping mall out of all three ports. There are at least 50 shops plus pop-up kiosk-type vendor stands. And of course, a pharmacy.

Puerta Maya Cozumel cruise dock

Puerta Maya is home to popular restaurants like The Three Amigos bar and a newer Pancho’s Backyard plus lots of colorful photo ops.

If you want to head out on your own, there’s a car rental agency located near the taxi stand.

Best Places for Lunch in San Miguel, Cozumel

If you love food, you’ll be happy to learn that Cozumel has some fabulous places to eat. If you’re like me, when I travel, I want to make sure to sample the best authentic food I can find. Cozumel has several restaurants that won’t disappoint.

When you only have one day to spare, it’s helpful to know exactly where to eat in Cozumel. Here are some fantastic suggestions! And yes, I’ve been to all of them.

Pancho’s Backyard

Pancho’s Backyard, in the heart of downtown San Miguel, is adjacent to Los Cinco Solas shopping arcade. The decor is traditional Mexican style with woven leather seats and bright colors. Just keeping walking north along the waterfront and you’ll find Pancho’s Backyard.

Local musicians play the sounds of Mexico for a fantastic ambiance. Not to worry, it’s not a noisy mariachi band. Instead, there are usually three people quietly playing guitar and accompanying instruments.

There’s also the newer Pancho’s Backyard down by Carnival’s pier, Puerto Maya. But I prefer the Pancho’s to the north at Los Cinco Solas small shopping mall.

If you’re looking for dessert, it’s a short taxi ride to the nearby Kakao Chocolate Factory.

Pescaderia is considered a hidden gem a bit outside of Centro San Miguel. This restaurant features fresh seafood dishes, including their famous ceviche, which is a must-try! Or try the local catch, prepared whole and served family-style.

Cozumel Pescaderia

Pescaderia also plays live music and is known for its accommodating and amiable owners and staff. This family-run restaurant has gluten-free options and reasonable prices for its high-quality food.

Panaderia la Cozumelena

Since 1962, Panaderia la Cozumelena has been serving delicious coffee and breakfast to its patrons. The menu has something for everyone, including light fruit and smoothies to substantial breakfasts.

Order a cafe de olla, coffee with cinnamon, and you’ll also receive pan dulce, a sweet and traditional Mexican bread. This place is the perfect place to break your fast when docking early for a day in Cozumel.

Cozumel Beach Clubs

What’s the number one thing you should do when visiting Cozumel? Go to the beach! If you’re looking to enjoy a full beach/pool day, there are many Cozumel beach clubs to choose from.

Here are a few suggestions! Keep in mind that the most popular and sandy beaches are all on the island’s west side.

That’s where you’ll find the lively beach clubs, major hotels, and some of the best dive and snorkeling sites in the world.

Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

Mr. Sanchos  Beach Club, located about 20 minutes from downtown San Miguel, offers an all-inclusive day pass to travelers looking to get the most out of the relaxing beach life in Cozumel.

All the cruise ships sell Mr. Sanchos beach shore excursions, so don’t be surprised at the number of cruise passengers homesteading their beach chairs.

Mr Sanchos Cozumel Beach Club

A day pass includes all of your food and drink as well as access to their two pools, beach palapas, and activities such as kayaking, water sports, and more. You can even add on horseback riding, parasailing, and the use of a wave runner.

Paradise Beach Club

Paradise Beach Club is another option when looking for an all-inclusive excursion with unlimited drinks and food. Enjoy their enormous heated pool and cute boutique shopping stores to pick up your souvenirs.

This particular club also features a Fun Day pass which includes access to their ocean water park with inflatable trampolines, slides, and more.

This pass also gives you access to kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and snorkeling gear.

Cabana Beach Club

If you’re looking for a more private experience, Cabana Beach might be the best place for you. At this beach club, you’ll enjoy your private VIP cabana that can hold up to six guests.

You’ll also have access to concierge service for food, drinks, and activities. There are also many events held at this particular club, including live music and dance parties. If you’re looking for a private and premiere experience, the Cabana Beach Club is it!

Also included with your entrance fee is access for snorkeling in the nearby Chankanaab Eco Park.

Isla Pasión (Passion Island)

Isla Pasion Cozumel

The private island of Isla Pasión is located at the north end of Cozumel, reachable by boat. Tours to this secluded beach are offered by all the cruise lines.

Included with the tour package are lounge chairs, hammocks, a water park, plus lunch and beverages. If you really want to get away from the crowds and stay on the west (calmer seas) side of Cozumel, this is a great choice.

Best Snorkeling Locations

While snorkeling isn’t my go-to sport, snorkeling is one of the best activities you can do in these warm Caribbean waters. Cozumel is known for its incredible and plentiful coral reefs, and following are a few of the best snorkeling locations in Cozumel and possibly the world.

Dzul Ha at The Money Bar

This location, near the Puerta Maya and International piers, could be the best location for snorkeling in all of Cozumel.

There’s plenty of sea life with large schools of tropical fish and an excellent chance to view turtles and manta rays! It’s also a very uncrowded beach club with great food and lounge chairs.

Playa Corona

Playa Corona is an excellent spot for snorkeling in shallow waters. Without the need for a boat ride to get to some great snorkeling, it’s a fan favorite!

Spot schools of fish and enjoy the local restaurant when you’ve become waterlogged and need a break!

Chankanaab Eco Park

At this popular spot, you’ll be sure to see lobster, colorful coral, manta rays, and much more. The mild currents in this area make for an abundance of tropical fish.

You won’t have to dive too deep to see all that you’d want to see on a snorkeling excursion.

Best Uncrowded Beaches on the “Other” Side

Most people gravitate towards the west side of Cozumel because of San Miguel, the many beach clubs, and all the three cruise ports along the coast.

However, the  other side of Cozumel  is beautiful, more rugged looking, and much more private if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.

On the east side of the island, tourists come for the bars and restaurants, narrow beaches, and gorgeous views of the rugged eastern coastline.

If you’re looking for a quieter place to relax and enjoy a good book without interruption, try visiting one of these options on the “other” side of the island.

Punta Sur Ecological Beach Park

At the southern tip of Cozumel Island, this eco-reserve is a protected lagoon teeming with wild birds and crocodiles. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for beautiful views of the island.

Driving to Punta Sur Eco Park in Cozumel

Here on the east side of Cozumel and the Caribbean Sea, you’ll feel like you’re on your private beach. You can rent 4x4s and head out on your own.

Some rentals also include a stop for lunch and a beverage and time to relax on the beach.

El Caracol Mayan Ruin in Cozumel

This could be one of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise. Especially if you want to get away from the hub-bub of downtown and usually thousands of cruise passengers.

Punta Sur Beach Park at the southern tip of Cozumel.

Playa Punta Morena

Talk about private! This beach is tucked away on the less popular east side of the island. Here, you can rent a hammock or lounger or use your belongings for sitting privately and spending time alone in paradise.

Punta Morena Beach Cozumel.

Playa Chen Rio and Chen Rio Restaurant

Chen Rio Restaurant in Cozumel

Playa Chen Rio beach is a great escape and one of the only really nice soft, sandy beaches on this side of the island.

Have lunch at Chen Rio’s as you overlook the waves crashing against the magnificent rocks along the shore. The palapa-inspired decor gives you an authentic tropical island experience. There’s an extensive menu to peruse and a sandy path down to the sea for exploring after lunch.

coconuts bar cozumel

For a break from the action, located between Chen Rio and Punta Morena, ascend the stone stairs up to one of my favorite bars in Cozumel.

With stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and excellent drinks and snacks, this is a great way to end your day in Cozumel.

There’s also a sandy walking path down to the rocky, limestone beach. Not for swimming.

Best Shopping in Cozumel

Something about traveling makes you want to shop! Of course, you’ll want to pick up some great souvenirs for your loved ones at home and also something for yourself to remember the trip.

Head to one of these shopping locations to find your favorite souvenirs.

Los Cinco Solas

Known in English as the Five Sons, this shopping center is a souvenir hunter’s dream.

Considered one of the best shopping destinations in all of Cozumel, this area is where you’ll find the best selection of beautifully hand-crafted gifts and pottery on the entire island.

While some of the items may be a bit expensive, it’s worth it for the quality and uniqueness.

Remember, if you have lunch at Pancho’s Backyard at the north end of town, you’ll be right there at Los Cinco Solas.

In need of sunscreen or other last-minute items that you forgot to pack? Are you looking for some unique spices? Look no further than MegaMart.

With tons of fresh fruit, vegetables, and to-go snacks, you’ll find it hard not to walk away with something delicious. It’s like a Walmart but more fun!

But remember, only unopened packs of food, coffee, spices, etc., are allowed back on the ship.

El Mercado is a colorful, open-air area full of little eateries and small shops. This local market is the perfect place to try all different types of local flavors, especially on a budget.

Covered breezeway at El Mercado.

Spend a couple of hours walking around for some fresh ready-to-eat meals! But you can’t bring the fruit back to your ship.

Mercado city market in Cozumel

Punta Langosta Mall

Located right next to the Punta Langosta cruise port, you’ll find all of the souvenirs you need.

Visit as soon as you dock or while you’re waiting to board after your day ashore. This area is full of big-name shops but also local Mexican vendors as well as a pharmacy.

Similar to Puerto Maya, it’s a tourist’s shopping haven.

Getting Around Cozumel Island

If you want to enjoy the most of Cozumel on your cruise, you’ll need a proper way to get around. Consider renting a taxi when you get off your cruise ship to take you downtown for a fair price.

If you want to go to the east side of the island, it might be better to rent a car instead of paying for the higher cab fare.

Or, walk up to a cab driver and ask how much he’d charge for a 1/2 day of touring.

A couple of years ago, for $50 USD, our driver took three of us all around the island, with stops at Chen Rio, Coconuts, and a couple of other places.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, consider renting an ATV to explore the island!

Cozumel Conclusion

To try and do many of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise, you really need to maximize your time. Cozumel is an incredible island with tons of unique and interesting activities and places to explore.

Be sure to leave some time to taste the local flavors from some of the best restaurants in the area, sip a cold margarita while you relax on some of the Caribbean’s best beaches.

You’ll see colorful tiny tropical fish swimming right up to the shoreline. But go snorkeling at the reefs, and you’ll be astounded at the variety of underwater activities and beauty.

Now that you know the best things to do in Cozumel in one day, it’s time to plan your cruise with our favorite cruise tips !

Hi Suzi, Thank you for your kind words about my Cozumel article. The island is really a wonderful place to visit with so many options for recreation and dining. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Thank you for this great run down of options and brief explanation of them. I think I have a clearer idea of the lay out of the town and perhaps what we might venture in to on our day off the ship.

Hi Becky, Thank you SO much for reading the article and your kind words. It’s really appreciated. As you probably already learned, I only have the one article on Roatan. But I hope my Costa Maya article was helpful. Cozumel is one of my favorite places…there’s really so much to do and see without spending a fortune. Have a wonderful cruise and thank you again!

We are headed to Cozumel for one day as part of a cruise. All the books I could find were far too in depth. Your article was perfect. Just enough specifics to help us make a plan. We don’t want to fill our days entirely with shore excursions, but don’t want to wander aimlessly and have people tell us later what we missed. I’m going to search now in hopes that you have similar articles for Roatan and Costa Maya. What a difference your work will make on our vacation. Thank you!

Hi Liz, Thank you so much for your kind words! Happy to share my info. Yes, I’ve spent a day at Nachi Cocum more than once. In fact, I think it was the first beach club I ever went to in Cozumel years ago and returned to several times. The pool is very nice, the food is plentiful and more typically touristic than a restaurant in town but still good. It always seems to get good reviews too and limiting the amount of guests is a great idea. Mr. Sanchos, on the other hand, is (in my opinion) somewhat chaotic. Nice but very crowded. I think you will enjoy your day at Nachi Cocum. I would suggest eating lunch earlier rather than later, when everything is fresh from the kitchen. Just my suggestion based on experience. Basically, get there earlier in the day, relax, eat and do your shopping later.

Have a wonderful day in Cozumel! Thank you again for reading my articles…it’s much appreciated.

Hi Sheri. Thank you for another great article! We are headed to Nachi Cocum this month. Do you have any experience with this Cozumel beach destination?

9 BEST Snorkeling Tours in Cozumel

By: Author Stefania Guglielmi

Posted on Last updated: August 30, 2024

Categories Mexico , North America

Cozumel is a picturesque island nestled in the Caribbean Sea… but you probably know this already if you’re reading this post! Cozumel is mostly known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life and for its wild landscapes.

Most people who come to Cozumel, no matter if for one day or multiple days, usually go on two tipes of tours: jeep tours to explore the island, and snorkeling tours to explore its marine life (and yes, I’ve done both).

By joining a snorkeling tour, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close to the coral formations, colorful fish, turtles, rays, starfish, and more .

Starfish at the bottom of the sea in Cozumel

I have selected the best Cozumel snorkeling tours available to make your choice easier. These excursions cater to all skills and offer good value. You’ll be taken to the best snorkeling spots, and will be accompanied by experts to ensure your safety.

➥ Why should you trust my selections? I’ve personally been snorkeling in Cozumel, and I know the best spots to enjoy the marine life on the island. I’ve carefully selected these excursions (including the one I went on) ensuring that they take you there, are led by expert guides, and provide safety and fun at the same time.

I use and trust Viator and Get Your Guide when booking tours around the world. I especially recommend them because of their cancellation policy. If for any reason your plans change, you can cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

In a rush? These are the very best tours :

OUR PICK: The BEST Cozumel Snorkel Tour

This Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo Reefs is the tour we went on and that I’d like to recommend.

We came to Cozumel for the day, and this tour departs from a marina that is a short taxi ride from the ferry terminal. Here, you’ll hop aboard a boat and travel to the best places to snorkel in Cozumel.

The tour features 3 snorkeling stops at Palancar, Columbia, and El Cielo . The warm was turquoise but unfortunately on the day we visited the sea was quite rough, which made things more difficult for newbies or not confident swimmer (I wore a lifejacket and I was fine).

However, I was told that’s not usually the case, and even people that have never snorkeled before can have a great time on this tour.

Bank of colorful fish.

On the first stop at Palancar Reef we could see corals and colorful fish (we didn’t see any turtles unfortunately, but they usually see them when the sea is calmer), but the highlight of the trip for us was our stop at El Cielo where we could see countless starfish .

We ended the day with beers and ceviche at El Cielito , a sandbar where we spotted some stingrays and a baby shark !

Water, soft drinks, beer, and a snack are included in this tour.

➤ Why do I recommend this tour? The excursion is led by friendly and very experienced guides who will ensure you feel safe in the water, and have a fantastic time. The tour takes you to the island’s absolute best snorkeling spots, and provides all the equipment needed for a successful and fun day.

It’s not just us saying it! Read what the reviews say :

”We had an fantastic experience with Juel and Momo who were our guides for the day. They made sure that we were comfortable, felt safe and attended to our needs and concerns. The boat was quite big so we had good room to move around in. The sea is exceptionally beautiful. We managed to see many beautiful fish, stingrays, a cute mini shark and starfish. Totally worth it, book this tour!” Jonathan_M – Read more reviews

Cozumel cruise port guide: How to spend your day ashore

Cozumel cruise ship

Cozumel is perhaps the most popular island in Mexico — and for good reason. The largest of Mexico's islands in the Caribbean Sea, Cozumel packs a punch for cruisers looking for a fun island escape.

Port areas can seem intimidating, especially a bustling one like Cozumel. While plenty of activities await cruisers in town, beyond the port, this Mexican gem is a paradise for both adventure seekers and sunbathers, with coral reefs, fantastic beaches and lush jungles. Cozumel is also one of the world's top diving destinations, with legendary snorkeling sites like the Palancar Reef, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, and enchanting Playa El Cielo.

Beyond the beach, the island's rich history is still displayed at ancient Mayan ruins. Cozumel's history dovetails with the present, with warm and welcoming locals and area restaurants serving delectable recipes that have withstood the test of time.

For an island packed with so much, it's extremely manageable to navigate. Cozumel is only 185 square miles, and most of that is jungle and beach. A road circumnavigates the island and cuts through the jungle, making it easy for travelers to get from the more populated western coast to the rugged, less-developed eastern shores. So, cruisers visiting for a day can really maximize how much they see and do in Cozumel.

Because there are so many things to do in the Cozumel cruise port, it's not surprising it's a popular port of call for a wide variety of operators. They include Carnival Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises , Royal Caribbean , Holland America , Princess Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises .

If your next Caribbean cruise adventure takes you to this dreamy Mexican isle, let this be your guide for how to spend your day ashore in Cozumel.

3 things TPG loves about Cozumel

  • Idyllic tropical scenery with beautiful beaches
  • A blend of history, culture and nature
  • Distinctive cuisine

What we could do without

  • Bars and restaurants near the port can be overpriced
  • San Miguel can feel touristy and crowded when multiple cruise ships are docked

Cozumel fast facts

Arrival details

The Cozumel cruise port is Mexico's busiest and one of the most popular cruise ports in the Caribbean, welcoming more than 3 million cruise passengers every year. The cruise port on Cozumel can be a little confusing, as it has three terminals on the island: Punta Langosta, Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal. Punta Langosta is in downtown San Miguel, and Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal are on the southwestern part of the island, about 5 miles south of San Miguel. It's about an 11-minute walk from Punta Langosta to San Miguel and about a 10-minute taxi ride from the other two terminals.

Language : Spanish is the official language, but most tourist services use English.

Currency : Mexico uses the Mexican peso; 17 pesos are roughly equal to $1. However, many restaurants, shops and bars will accept dollars, likely at a more expensive exchange rate. Most facilities will accept credit cards. It is best to travel with pesos, though, to get the best deal.

Time zone : Cozumel uses Eastern Standard Time. It does not observe daylight saving time.

Top things to do in Cozumel cruise port

cozumel port excursions

Cozumel is a treasure trove of beachy island opportunities. It's one of Mexico's few Caribbean islands and features a culture and energy all its own, with Indigenous Mayan roots and a laid-back vibe that runs on island time. Cruisers should begin their adventure in port by exploring San Miguel de Cozumel, the island's largest city. This buzzy port of call overflows with shops, restaurants and tour companies.

Begin your adventure in port by exploring the island's stunning underwater world through snorkeling or diving excursions among the colorful coral reefs and diverse marine life. Cozumel is perched along the Mesoamerican Reef, the world's second-largest barrier reef system. Finding a dive shop should be easy — dozens of them are near the cruise port. The majority of the dive shops are along the western coast of the island, whether in San Miguel proper or along the beautiful beaches that rim the coastline.

Dive into the aquamarine waters of Chankanaab, a small lagoon just 4 miles from San Miguel. Teeming with tropical fish, it's part of Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park, an outdoor playground with zip lines, a sea lion show and a crocodile exhibition.

Delve into the rich history of the Mayan civilization with a visit to the ruins of San Gervasio or the ancient ceremonial site of El Cedral. Additionally, Discover Mexico Park Cozumel is an interactive cultural park that showcases Mexico's traditional music, art and food. Here you can watch the traditional Danza de los Voladores, the Dance of the Flyers, who spin from the top of a 100-foot pole. Also called Voladores de Papantla, the awe-inspiring aerial dance is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

If you seek relaxation, unwind on the fluffy white sand beaches of Cozumel, where crystal-clear water sets the scene for sunbathing and water sports. At the island's southern tip, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is Cozumel's largest ecological park. One of the most beautiful beach areas on the island, it's a main destination for snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking.

Popular Cozumel excursions

Cozumel may be only 185 square miles, but it is packed with activities that cater to many different interests. From underwater adventures and adrenaline-pumping experiences to cultural sites and shopping opportunities, there are dozens of Cozumel excursions from the cruise port.

Beach day pass

A favorite Cozumel excursion from the cruise port is to park yourself at the beach for the day — and Cozumel has plenty. Many beach clubs on the island offer day passes for cruise passengers, which include use of the facilities and restaurants with all-inclusive access. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is one of the most popular beach club parks to spend the day, simply because of the sheer volume of things to do. Guests can enjoy more than 20 land and water sports activities, a kids area, an open bar and a buffet serving international dishes. Beach access and a swimming pool are available, too.

An all-terrain-vehicle or Jeep adventure tour

The vast majority of Cozumel is carpeted with scrubby jungle, meaning ample opportunity for adventure tours. Cruise passengers can climb aboard an ATV or hop into an open-air Jeep for four-wheeling adventures to places in Cozumel that are removed from the buzz of downtown. Explore inland off-road trails, visit and swim in the Jade Cavern Cenote, and venture deep into Punta Sur Eco Beach Park.

Diving and snorkeling

Cozumel offers a multitude of activities focused on the island's beautiful blue water and magnificent natural environment. Just about every water sport under the sun — sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving, among others — and encounters with dolphins, manta rays and sea lions are available to Cozumel cruisers.

Tour Mayan ruins

cozumel port excursions

Cozumel is home to more than 30 Mayan archaeological sites, and cruise passengers can get up close and personal with some of the island's best. Excursions to the ruins of San Gervasio include a guided walk through the largest and most important Mayan settlement in Cozumel. Some cruise lines also offer excursions to the ancient cliffside city of Tulum on the southeastern tip of Mexico.

Visit the mainland

Cozumel is a 30-minute ferry ride from downtown Playa del Carmen, making it easy for cruise passengers to get to mainland Mexico for even more adventure. Steps from the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen is the iconic Quinta Avenida, the main drag known for its lively atmosphere, restaurants, shops and bars. Many cruise excursion companies even arrange for cruise passengers to visit the various theme parks that pepper the Riviera Maya, like Xcaret Park, Xenses Park and Xplor Park.

Best Cozumel beaches near the cruise port

The Mexican Caribbean is known for its gorgeous beaches. That's especially true in Cozumel, with its sugary soft sand and mesmerizing water.

Playa San Juan

This northwestern beach is one of the easiest beaches to reach from San Miguel. Its proximity to resorts and shopping makes it a top draw for cruise passengers, which can mean bigger crowds when cruise ships are docked. Its convenient location makes up for that, though. Snorkeling is one of the top activities at this beach, and many local shops rent equipment. Buccanos Beach Club, which offers a pool, a restaurant and other amenities, is also here.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

One of Cozumel's largest beaches, this action-packed coastal playground has something for everyone in the family. Expect water park activities, food and bars, spa treatments and even a 500-foot-long adventure circuit with floating obstacles.

Paradise Beach

Five miles from the cruise ship pier, this stunning stretch of sand is worth the relatively short trip from town for the endless activities available. The beach club offers refreshments and a pool, plus cruisers can purchase a fun pass that grants access to the water park, kayaks and snorkeling gear.

Stingray Beach

Close to San Miguel and a quick walk from Punta Langosta, this calm, western beach gets its name from the clusters of stingrays that swim and float just offshore. Gliding through the water, these gentle creatures are a big draw for snorkelers and swimmers. Other beach activities include paddleboarding tours, chocolate workshops and open-sea snorkeling tours.

Mr Sanchos Beach

About 15 minutes from San Miguel, this west coast beach is a paradise for families thanks to its sprawling beach club. Cruisers can purchase a day pass to the beach club, which grants access to swimming pools, a spa, a restaurant and lots of activities. Some activities cost extra, but the pass includes horseback riding, parasailing and Jet Ski tours.

Tip : Beaches on the eastern side of the island see far fewer crowds. It's only about a 30-minute drive to the eastern coast from downtown. Food and drink prices will typically be cheaper on the eastern shores, but the beaches are rockier here, and the water is more choppy.

Playa El Cielo

The best way to visit Playa El Cielo on a cruise is to book a snorkeling shore excursion. Trust us, it will be worth it. At the southern tip of Cozumel, this dreamy swath of sugary sand is known for its crystal-clear water and the thousands of starfish that rest on the bleached white sand beneath the waves. You can't access El Cielo by car, so excursions shuttle travelers over by boat.

Passion Island

If it's possible to elevate a Cozumel beach experience, Passion Island does just that. This small, pristine wedge of paradise is just off the north coast. Thick with palm trees and nothing but turquoise water as far as the eye can see, the protected island is just a five-minute crossing over from Cozumel. The best way to reach it is from the Punta Langosta cruise terminal, where guides can arrange transportation, lunch and activities.

How to get around Cozumel on your own

cozumel port excursions

  • On foot : San Miguel is an extremely walkable town, with a grid of crisscrossing streets that are flanked by restaurants, bars and souvenir shops.
  • Taxi : Taxis are abundant on Cozumel, particularly at the cruise terminals. It's about a four-minute taxi ride from Punta Langosta into San Miguel and about a 10-minute taxi ride from both Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal. Always confirm the price before getting into a taxi. Prices are fixed, but it isn't uncommon for some taxi drivers to overcharge tourists.
  • Bike or scooter : Getting around Cozumel on two wheels is popular transportation for tourists, and there are many bike and scooter rental shops in San Miguel. Keep in mind that scooters are still motorized vehicles, so you should not drive one if you don't have experience. It's also extremely important to wear a helmet.
  • Car : All three cruise terminals have rental cars available near their taxi departure areas.

Cozumel restaurants near the cruise port

Mexican fare reigns supreme in Cozumel. However, as an international tourist destination, it also provides a broad selection of cuisines for visitors to sample.

Plenty of restaurants are steps from the cruise port, but keep in mind that you will be paying a pretty peso at many of the more popular tourist restaurants. San Miguel is where you will find the majority of the restaurants on the island. Most places here are walkable, and you'll find the widest variety of restaurants to choose from.

Restaurants are also scattered along the coastline — mainly in the form of beach clubs, which is a big thing in Cozumel. A few specialty restaurants can be found on the beaches, too. For example, Buccanos has a reputation for the best seafood in town. It's pricey, but higher prices are something to expect in Cozumel in general. This is one of the most popular restaurants for catching the sunset, so be sure to make those dinner reservations far in advance.

Another coastal must is The Money Bar Beach Club, beloved by both locals and longtime visitors. A two-for-one happy hour makes this a popular spot at sunset. Plus, live music sets the scene for a lovely sundowner moment.

On the east side of the island, things go a little off-grid, in a good way. Cozumel's wild and windswept eastern side means only a handful of beach bars and restaurants are available. Mezcalito's Restaurant & Beach Bar is a must. It's one of the island's oldest bars, and this Cozumel institution serves up signature laid-back beach vibes and views out to sea.

Cozumel dishes to try

Mexican food may be an overarching term, but you'll find that its definition changes everywhere in Mexico that you visit. Cozumel is no exception. Cozumelian cuisine combines Mayan recipes, Spanish flavors and Caribbean twists. When visiting Cozumel, a few dishes must be on your foodie bucket list.

Cochinita pibil is a Yucatan essential. This slow-roasted pork dish is prevalent throughout the Yucatan peninsula; the pork is heaped into tacos or stuffed between bread for plump tortas, all topped with pickled onions. Taqueria Maya is the best spot in town for this must-try dish.

Another Yucatecan specialty, panuchos are made from fried tortillas stuffed with refried black beans and topped with cabbage, pulled chicken, red onions and avocado. You can find these at the stalls within Cozumel's Mercado Municipal, which opens at 7 a.m.

Don't miss the simple, rustic, delicious pescado frito (fried fish). Most people are frying up grouper or red snapper on the island. It's quick, easy, delicious and cheap.

As with most coastal destinations in Mexico, ceviche is a staple in Cozumel. The fresh fish salad has lime juice, pico de gallo, cilantro and sometimes tropical fruits. The best part? You can find it practically everywhere on Cozumel.

Cozumel cruise port shopping

Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal both have tons of shopping right in the terminal area. Puerta Maya even has a two-story shopping mall with more than 50 different outlets. Also, several local merchants sell handmade crafts and souvenirs from carts.

Across the road from the International Cruise Terminal is the Royal Village Shopping Center, which has lots of options for shopping and dining. You'll also find the Mayan Plaza with even more shops.

Punta Langosta is within walking distance of San Miguel, where an overwhelming number of boutiques and souvenir shops await. Los Cinco Soles, known for its wide selection of handicrafts and silver, is one of the best in town.

Speaking of silver, Mexican silver is always a nice treat to take home with you. Sergio's Silver from Taxco has arguably the best selection of jewelry in town and is within walking distance of the Punta Maya terminal.

Free things to do in Cozumel cruise port

The best part about Mexico's beaches is that they are all usually free to access. If you want to just hang out at the beach without going to a beach club, most of the beaches in Cozumel are free to use. Playa Palancar, Playa Chen Rio and Playa Mezcalitos are just a few favorites.

Also, it's always free to wander around the main plaza in San Miguel to people-watch and window-shop.

Bottom line
