Hi, I'm Ellie - a presenter and events host. 

I present the travel news on BBC 5 Live's Breakfast and Drive show alongside freelance presenting across the BBC, including Radio 2 and BBC Local Radio. Previously I presented the ARIA-nominated, number one commercial breakfast show in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire on Viking FM. 

 I'm also an experienced stage and events host, working across a variety of events from company awards to music stages with up to 60,000 people in attendance. 

I have worked on voice over projects including radio adverts, corporate videos and online ad campaigns and, sometimes, you'll catch me in front of the camera too!

Meet BBC Radio 2 Presenter Ellie Brennan

Sometimes when you go to photograph someone you just hit it off immediately. This was the case when I went to shoot Ellie Brennan at Media city in Manchester.

Currently covering for OJ Borg’s Radio 2 slot, Ellie was great fun – as you’d expect from a fellow Yorkshire lass!

We swapped lots of stories, including one where she surprised Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers at one of his gigs… He thought she wanted a selfie with him, not for him to take one of her and her friends as she hadn’t yet realised who he was!

I love this one of Ellie outside Media City, and eventually in amongst our chatter, we also remembered to find a plain wall to take one of the required photos in front of!

As this was one of my jobs through Loftus, I also want to share the portrait I had taken by James Watkins for my new profile on their team page. Taken on the stairs in Wogan House, I’m pretty happy with this one given that I’m much more comfortable behind the camera than in front if it.

Strictly Come Dancing champion Ellie Leach has revealed the one thing she doesn’t want Vito Coppola to do with his new dance partner.

The former Coronation Street actress lifted the 2023 glitterball trophy with Coppola and celebrated by getting matching bee tattoos.

The pair have repeatedly been romantically linked since partnering up for the popular entertainment show

This year, the professional Italian dancer has been paired with Miranda actress Sarah Hadland.

Discussing Coppola’s new partner when she was interviewed on BBC Radio 2 on Saturday (21 September), the actress said she is “quietly hoping” the pair do not get matching tattoos.

She said: “Maybe they can do something else that can symbolize their friendship?”

'Radio 2 is not a nostalgia station': How the BBC network is embracing the new pop establishment

BBC Radio 2 head of music Jeff Smith has told Music Week that the network is not a “nostalgia station”.

Radio 2’s most popular presenter, Ken Bruce , has just left after more than three decades. He will be starting at commercial rival Greatest Hits Radio on Monday, April 3. 

It follows the departure of Radio 2 presenters including Simon Mayo, Paul O’Grady and Vanessa Feltz, while Steve Wright left his weekday show last year after more than two decades. New faces include Radio 1’s Scott Mills and TV presenter Vernon Kay , who will present the morning show from May.

The changes have prompted newspaper headlines suggesting that older listeners are increasingly switching off the BBC station in favour of rivals such as Boom or Bauer Media Audio’s Greatest Hits Radio. As well as Ken Bruce, the latter features ex-Radio 2 presenter Simon Mayo at drivetime.

According to the latest RAJAR results , Radio 2 has lost almost 600,000 listeners in 12 months, although it remains the UK’s most popular station with 14.23 million tuning in.

While Greatest Hits Radio is a feelgood station featuring hits from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, Radio 2’s remit is much more broad. It is required to appeal to a multi-generational audience over 35, which has not changed in recent decades.

Four years ago, BBC Radio 2 head of music Jeff Smith spoke about the refreshed music policy - billed as “Radio 2 reimagined”. Alongside playing timeless and melodic pop, the station brought in the new pop establishment, including Dua Lipa, Jess Glynne, Calvin Harris and Clean Bandit. Stormzy has since appeared on the playlist as the station introduces new stars to its listeners.

The network’s Piano Room Month featured performers including Raye , Stormzy, Jessie Ware, Ellie Goulding, Freya Ridings and Sugababes, alongside more familiar Radio 2 staples such as Richard Marx, Belinda Carlisle and Michael Ball. Piano Room has since added performers including U2 , Cat Burns and Depeche Mode.

Smith told Music Week that the station is committed to the music policy established in 2019.

“It's a real strength of Radio 2 to be able to cover a broad range of genres and a broad range of eras,” said Smith. “We really take pride in that. Piano  Room Month reflects that broad range of genres but doesn't signpost any particularly massive change in signal.”

As part of the evolution of the station four years ago, Radio 2 put less focus on music from the ’60s and ’70s, and allowed more air time for tracks from the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s, as well as contemporary songs.

The current new music playlist at Radio 2 includes Ellie Goulding, Jessie Ware, Niall Horan, Zara Larsson, Jax Jones x Calum Scott and Mimi Webb .

“Music and radio stations always evolve and stations extend [their music coverage], we do that all the time,” said Smith. “Not just at this station, but other BBC stations. I think it's easy to fall into a trap in radio sometimes to just become a certain ‘feel’, like a nostalgia station. I would say that happens in other places, but Radio 2 is definitely not a nostalgia station, and actually never has been. 

“It has always been about the best music from the past, and the best music from today. And within the context of what we did with that month [Piano Room Month], I think we covered that. So it does reflect Radio 2 today, it's about that whole range of music.”

As well as the traditional on-air Radio 2 platform, Smith said the station is focusing more on reaching audiences via social media in partnership with artists. The network increased its social activity around Piano Room Month for this year’s edition.

“We worked really closely with all the artists and labels to deliver content [on social media],” he told Music Week . “So the general plan is to get into wider areas, because we know that Instagram and Facebook audiences - those who are over 35 - will be interested in these artists and they will want to find it in their socials as well. As a massive digital media organisation, we want to make sure that we really are connected to all those social [platforms] as well.”

Radio 2 is nominated at the Music Week Awards 2023 in the Radio Station category, which it won in 2021 just over a year on from the appointment of head of station Helen Thomas. 

The station is also represented in the Radio Show category by Jo Whiley and Romesh Ranganathan (For The Love Of Hip-Hop).

Sally Boazman

Sally Boazman is a broadcasting legend. Thanks to her travel reports and regular interactions with the likes of Chris Evans, Jeremy Vine and Steve Wright on their BBC radio shows, she is now well known to the nation as, Sally Traffic. Having become a cult figure, Sally is also known, as the patron saint of road users.

In a Radio Times poll, Sally was voted one of the most attractive female voices on UK radio.

Before moving on to radio broadcasting, Sally worked for a little while as an actress. However, broadcasting beckoned and Sally found herself working in current affairs at London Weekend Television (LWT), followed by a spell with AA Roadwatch, broadcasting traffic news bulletins to numerous stations, nationwide.

She then worked at the BBC World Service and the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS). Having served her apprenticeship, Sally soon worked her way up to become chief travel reporter on BBC Greater London Radio. Whilst there, she wrote and delivered scripts, for both radio and Newsroom South East.

In 1998, Sally Boazman made the big move to BBC Radio2. She then took up the role as the station’s first designated travel reporter, quickly becoming the butt of jibes and innuendo from her fellow presenters. However, Sally does have broad shoulders and she continues to enjoy what she considers to be, a very special job.

Sally was honoured with an Outstanding Achievement Award on behalf of all the UK Truckers, for her traffic news on BBC Radio 2.

Lewis Capaldi has someone special in his life.

The Grammy-nominated Scottish musician, known for heart-wrenching pop ballads like “Someone You Loved” and “Before You Go,” first sparked romance rumors with actress and dancer Ellie MacDowall in November 2022 when they were spotted on a dinner date, per Daily Mail .

The couple shared a kiss at a BRIT Awards afterparty in February 2023, and a few months later, Capaldi opened up about his relationship for the first time during an interview with BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills.

It’s not known how Capaldi and MacDowall met, but the singer has spoken about his past experiences with dating apps , revealing that he was kicked off of Tinder because “people think I’m fake.”

Just a few months after going public with his new relationship, Capaldi announced he was taking a break from the spotlight. Following his set at the Glastonbury music festival, where the crowd helped him finish singing his hit “Someone You Loved,” the musician shared an Instagram message stating he was “taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future.”

The announcement came just three weeks after Capaldi, who has been open in the past about his struggles with anxiety and Tourette syndrome , canceled a string of performances in order to “rest and recover” both mentally and physically.

The Daily Mail reported that MacDowall is also set to star in an upcoming ITV series about Cary Grant titled Archie as Grant’s daughter Jennifer.

Following romance rumors, Capaldi and MacDowall seemingly confirmed their romance at an afterparty for the BRIT Awards, where the singer was nominated and delivered a performance of his single “Forget Me.”

The pair were photographed kissing on a sofa at 180 The Strand in London.

Capaldi spoke publicly about her for the first time in April 2023

During an interview with BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills, Capaldi opened up about his relationship with MacDowall for the first time. When discussing the musician’s new single “Wish You The Best,” Mills asked the singer if he was in a rush to settle down.

"I have a girlfriend and that's going really well," Capaldi replied. "I am a happy chappy, she's a lovely lady. I feel good about everything."

The couple have mostly kept things low-key, but they’ve shared glimpses of their relationship on social media.

On May 6, 2023, MacDowall posted a series of pictures with the caption “Travel dump” on Instagram. Along with some beautiful scenery, she shared a black-and-white photo of Capaldi standing in the middle of the street and another of him wearing a pair of green sunglasses with his face close to the camera.

Earlier that week, MacDowall attended Capaldi’s show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and shared a video of his performance on her Instagram Story.

About a month after the “Before You Go” singer publicly spoke about his relationship with MacDowall, the couple were photographed walking hand-in-hand in West Hollywood.

Capaldi wore a white t-shirt with black pants and white sneakers for the outing, while MacDowall wore a green tank top paired with a black sweater and pants as well as black-and-white sneakers.

Richie Anderson is an English television and radio presenter. He’s an RTS award-winning presenter best known for his well-established role on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, presenting the travel bulletins as well as hosting a wide variety of his own shows. In May 2022, he traveled to Turin to cover the Eurovision Song Contest for the station. A regular presenter on The One Show, he is often seen on BBC One and was proud to be part of the channel’s recent Platinum Jubilee coverage.

He joined BBC Radio 2 in 2019 as a travel news reporter for the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show as well as the mid-morning show hosted by Ken Bruce on the popular radio station.

Anderson started his radio career on BBC Radio WM shortly after completing his University of Leeds’ journalism degree – initially providing reports from football matches before becoming a presenter. He left in January 2021 to concentrate on his Radio 2 career in London. He said: “I was at university when I first wrote to WM to see if I could do some work experience and it all started from there – I’m so glad they took a chance on me.

“I got the chance to do seven early-morning Saturday breakfast shows from 5 am to 6 am and absolutely loved it and cried in the office when they told me I could do a Saturday afternoon show, I just couldn’t believe I’d been given the opportunity.

“I’ve always found people really willing to help and offer advice, whether at WM or Radio 2 and I think that’s really important.

“There are some great people coming through there now like Henry Liston and Rakeem Omar.”

BBC Radio 2 presenter Richie Anderson is the third celebrity contestant confirmed for the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing. The multi-award-winning entertainment show will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its 20th series in September 2022, once again bringing glitter, glamour and glorious dancing to homes across the nation.

Anderson said: “This is a dream come true! I cannot wait to get in those sparkles and sequins and shimmy across the most famous dance floor in the world!
