Travel Baseball in the Central Valley....The Last Frontier

Travel Baseball has most definitely and continues to change the youth baseball landscape. It's here, and it doesn't appear to be going away any time soon. The Southeast (the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida etc), Texas and California have led the way in being "all in" the travel ball world. However, one part of California, the central valley, has not to date jumped "all in".

Don't get us wrong, there is definitely a travel baseball presence in the Valley but local leagues still appear to take top priority for many in the Valley. Is this changing....We don't intend to answer that question here but Central California Travel Baseball - CCTB intends to follow it closely.

Just this Spring/Summer/Fall, the Valley has seen more and more baseball academies spring up; many of which have very knowledgeable instructors and coaches. And why not, the Valley is loaded with former high level players and great coaches.

The Valley has seen more and more quality tournaments. Some of the big dogs in travel baseball ( USSSA , XDS and NCTB) have begun to run tournaments bringing in teams from Northern & Southern California. It is no longer necessary to travel out of the area to play in these type of tournaments. If teams chose to stay local they have a lot of great choices.

CCTB's goal is to make this a one-stop shop for following local travel teams, giving updates on local tournaments with predictions & summaries, and player profiles. We will also be publishing a quarterly power rankings by age division for all central California teams.

On the horizon, there are 5 big tournaments that will go a long way in determining these rankings and seeing who's got it for 2019:

USSSA's Central Valley Shootout on November 3rd & 4th at Granite Park, Fresno which features a great 12u & 13u bracket with teams from the Bay Area, Modesto, and Bakersfield. Play Hard 12u is currently ranked 4th in the State in the majors division.

PG's Best of the Best on November 10th & 11th at Granite Park, Fresno. This event is being put on by NCTB and will feature not only some of the best teams in California but some of the best in the nation. We'll make sure to let you all know how the valley teams stack up!

Xtreme Diamond Sports (XDS) & King of Kings Baseball are hosting the Veteran's Day Bash in Hanford on Nov 10/11 weekend. The who's coming list has some of the best teams in the valley competing.

USSSA's Battle for the State is being held at Granite park on Nov 17/18 with several central coast teams already on the list.

Sliders Winter Showdown in Bakersfield on Dec 1/2 weekend. This is the 7th year this event has taken place on this weekend and it's always a very competitive tournament with several SoCal teams making the trek into the Valley.

Look for our first Power Rankings shortly after the completion of these fall tournaments before most teams go into hibernation for the Holidays....

Robots are starting (good) fires in california.

(Bloomberg) -- Cody Chiverton has spent the past decade lighting fires. As a former firefighter with the US Forest Service, he participated in dozens of prescribed burns across the American West, in which fire-prevention teams would carry drip torches to ignite dry vegetation, leaving flames and smoke in their wake.

But in June, Chiverton did a prescribed burn with no flames and no smoke. Instead, a tank-like robot pulled by a remote-controlled tractor handled all of the igniting. As it slowly moved along a hiking trail near Palo Alto, California, the robot turned anything in its path — brush, dry grasses, leaf litter — into a dark trail of ash.

“It’s a cool tool,” says Chiverton, 31, who this year joined San Francisco-based BurnBot. The startup doesn’t sell its robots (it has made two so far). Instead, forest managers, property owners and utilities book them on demand, at prices that start in the neighborhood of $1,000 per acre.

Prescribed or controlled burns — fighting fire with fire — have long been used by indigenous groups to manage wildfire risk. Clearing excess vegetation reduces a forest’s fuel load, making it less likely a blaze will break out or spread quickly. But it’s a manpower-intensive process. BurnBot’s June burn covered an area the size of an American football field using a five-member crew; Chiverton says the same job sans robot would have needed 10 people.

“This is a way that we can start doing more prescribed fire to clean up our landscapes and make them more resilient,” he says.

There’s an acute need to improve fire management globally. Greece, Turkey and Canada are all dealing with multiple forest fires this summer, and California is tackling one of the worst fires in state history. On Aug. 1, the US’s National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) issued a warning about “extreme levels” of fire activity in the Western part of the country this year. Wildfires consumed an average of 7.65 million acres per year in the US over the past five years, 52% higher than two decades ago, according to NIFC.

Some of that has to do with decades of wildfire suppression, which has prevented the natural thinning of forests that reduces fuel load for future fires. But climate change is also exacerbating the conditions that make blazes bigger and more frequent.

More and bigger wildfires mean more communities and infrastructure at risk, and more carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere as forests are destroyed. (Last year, wildfires in Canada spewed more CO2 than all of Mexico.) Bigger blazes are also putting more pressure on firefighters, just as the industry is facing a labor shortage. California alone has seen an exodus of nearly 1,000 federal wildland firefighters since 2020.

“There’s a fundamental mismatch between how many acres need treatment and what the capacity of the workforce today is,” says BurnBot Chief Executive Officer Anukool Lakhina, who started the company in 2022 alongside co-founder Waleed Haddad.

BurnBot is part of a nascent but fast-growing “fire tech” sector that’s focused on preventing, detecting and suppressing wildfires. San Francisco-based Pano AI uses artificial intelligence-enabled cameras to spot fires earlier, while Santa Monica, California-based Rain makes autonomous helicopters to target blazes from above and France’s Shark Robotics builds firefighting robots for the frontlines.

BurnBot’s signature machine aims to make prescribed burns easier and safer. In addition to reducing manpower needs, the robot keeps combustion within its burning chamber, where propane torches and air blowers bring flame temperatures up to 1,000C (1,832F). Industrial-scale fans create upward airflow, trapping the flames and embers and reducing the risk of fire spreading outside.

That’s a key concern: Igniting vegetation is easier in dry weather, but fire services often prohibit it because of the risk a blaze will spin out of control. In 2022, escaped fire from two prescribed burns turned into the largest wildfire in New Mexico’s history.

BurnBot’s burns are also largely smoke-free. The intense heat, combined with a high-concentration stream of oxygen, destroys particulate matter. Lakhina describes it as “burning the smoke.”

That feature has already captured the interest of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, California’s largest utility, which typically avoids prescribed burns near its 18,500 miles (30,000 kilometers) of transmission lines because the smoke is a safety hazard. The utility greenlit a demo of BurnBot’s technology last year. Kevin Johnson, an analyst who vets innovative wildfire solutions for PG&E, says he “couldn’t see the smoke or smell the smoke.”

BurnBot offers several automated solutions to reduce wildfire risk, though the controlled-burn robot is its first fully in-house creation. The company also deploys drones and laser-imaging to assess landscapes for fire treatment, and has a dozen masticating machines that can remove downed trees and thin underwood. Across its suite of services, BurnBot has cleared over 2,000 acres.

The company, which has raised $25 million to date, operates in California, Oregon and Nevada, and will start services in Australia next month. Lakhin says there are plans to expand to six more US states and Canada next year, and to service 1 million acres annually by 2035. (Even that would be less than a quarter of the 4.3 million acres the US Forest Service helped treat last year.)

There are still some technical wrinkles to iron out. The machines are still wobbly on rocky terrain. And during one controlled burn last year, the robot tackled a thicket of wet grass by dialing up flame temperature so high that it also melted its own components. (Lakhina says the newer iteration is heatproof).

Then there’s the challenge of getting more fire authorities on board. In an industry whose tactics rarely evolve, Lakhina says it can be “very difficult to introduce new approaches.”

To make inroads, BurnBot has recruited dozens of former firefighters and forestry professionals like Chiverton, who can do double duty as operational crew and advocates for technology-aided wildfire control. Lakhina says the Inflation Reduction Act, which allocated billions of dollars to fire management in the US, is also channeling more attention to fire-prevention solutions. So is the plight of overworked firefighters.

“The tide is changing,” Lakhina says. “Fire tech as a category is getting noticed.”

Danny Jansen to make MLB history by playing for both Red Sox and Blue Jays in same game

Danny Jansen started a June 26 game in Boston at catcher for the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

Two months later, he'll resume it on the side of history.

Jansen, now with the Red Sox, will be the first baseball player ever to appear for both teams in the same game when Boston and Toronto continue their previously suspended contest on Monday.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Friday that Jansen will be Boston's catcher when the teams reconvene.

"It's going to be nuts," Jansen told The Athletic.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

Jansen was set for his first at-bat of the original game for the Blue Jays when the contest was called in the second inning.

Just over a month later, Jansen was traded to the Red Sox, who subsequently designated Reese McGuire -- Boston's catcher on June 26 -- for assignment.

Jansen was surprised when he learned about his potential shot at history.

"I didn't know (much about this) at first," he told The Athletic. "I was like, ‘What, am I going to have to go on the other team?' I didn't know what was going to happen. It just kind of caught me off guard about the whole situation. Because when I got traded, it was just a whirlwind at first and I didn't think about it.

"But then once that stuff settled, I heard about (the suspended game scenario). And I was like, ‘Oh, that's cool. That's a unique thing that's going to happen.'"

Jansen, 29, has hit .257 with two home runs and five RBIs in 13 games with the Red Sox entering Friday.

Historic baseball park used in 'A League of Their Own,' other films destroyed by fire

A piece of Hollywood history is gone.

The Jay Littleton Ball Park, located in Ontario, California, where scenes from the classic movie "A League of Their Own" were filmed, was destroyed in a fire that began on Thursday night.

The Ontario Fire Department shared a statement on social media that the first fire engine responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m. local time, with additional resources requested to fight the blaze which had been first spotted in the wooden grandstands.

A total of 51 personnel worked to put out the fire, and a search confirmed no victims were located.

TOM HANKS-WORN BASEBALL UNIFORM FROM 'A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN' IS UP FOR AUCTION

The fire department also noted that the cause "remains under investigation."

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

The ballpark’s all-wooden grandstands were constructed in 1937, and the facility was regularly used by amateur leagues over the years, only hosting one professional team, the Ontario Orioles, in 1947.

Its historical appearance made it popular for filming, most notably the 1992 classic "A League of Their Own," starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna, directed by Penny Marshall.

According to Aaron Matthiesen, president of the Ontario Eastern Little League, in an interview with ABC 7, "The dugout here on the third baseline is where Tom Hanks had his iconic line: 'There's no crying in baseball!'"

Matthiesen also told FOX 11 that homelessness had been an ongoing issue with the park.

"We constantly have issues with the homeless at the park," he told the outlet. "In the past, they’ve broken into the building and cut the gas line so they could hook up their own gas…it’s just fallen in disarray, and I unfortunately think that’s what happened."

The Ontario Fire Department and City of Ontario did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Other famous films shot at the park include "Eight Men Out," starring John Cusack, "The Babe Ruth Story," and most recently Amazon Prime’s TV series version of "A League of Their Own."

Dan Bell, Ontario's director of communications, told Entertainment Weekly, "It's a terrible loss for our community. Everyone here either played or had relatives or kids who played on that field over the years. In its 87 years of existence, a lot of people played on that field."

Bell also clarified that the field is intact, but the stands are completely gone. "We'll have to look at what we're gonna do in the future with that field," he told the outlet. "Being such a significant part of our city's history, we'll look at how we move forward with it."
