Britain’s most-successful dance group, Diversity, have announced their brand-new UK and Ireland tour,  Supernova.  The 66-date tour takes place across 40 towns and cities throughout 2023 and 2024. Tickets will go on sale at 10am on Friday 18 th  November* via  gigsandtours.com  and  ticketmaster.co.uk . Tickets for Belfast and Dublin will be available via  ticketmaster.ie .

Supernova  follows Diversity’s sold-out  Connected  tour earlier this year, which combined playful, comedic routines with powerful statements on human connectivity. Big, relentless, and energetic, the tour dazzled fans across the UK.

Diversity took the nation by storm when they won the third series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 and have since sold out multiple UK and Irish tours, with countless television and live performances. Alongside preparing for their brand-new tour, and in keeping with their progressive, innovative nature, Diversity are currently preparing to launch  Diversity Studios , which will offer in person and live streamed dance classes.

Last month, Ashley Banjo was awarded an MBE for his services to dance. Alongside choreographing and performing with Diversity, Ashley has been committed to educating people on dance, becoming a judge on  Dancing on Ice,  and offering his expertise as a host and creative in the BAFTA nominated  The Real Full Monty  and International Emmy Award, Broadcast Award, and Royal Television Society Award winning  The Real Full Monty: Ladies Night . Ashley also had the honour of becoming a co-presenter at the Pride of Britain Awards last year, working alongside Carol Vorderman.

Jordan Banjo has also hosted a variety of TV shows, including two series of BBC 1’s  Primetime  and BAFTA-nominated show  The Greatest Dancer . Jordan along with Perri Kiely are also part of breakfast radio royalty, presenting Kiss Breakfast every weekday.

Diversity’s illustrious career shows how they continue to innovate, grow, and achieve. Collectively Diversity recently won Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment of 2020 at the British Academy Television Awards for their incredible Britain’s Got Talent routine, watch  here .

Diversity have also confirmed that they will be supporting anti-poverty charity the Trussell Trust**, which provides emergency food and support to people locked in poverty while campaigning for change to end the need for food banks in the UK. Right now, millions of people across the country are facing a cost of living crisis as food and energy prices soar and families are feeling the biggest squeeze on incomes in a generation. Attendees on the tour are being invited to bring along food donations to the shows, where there will be collection points across the venue each night. There will also be collection buckets for any cash donations. All donations will be distributed to people in crisis across the 1,300 food bank centres in the Trussell Trust network. Dance troupe Diversity have announced presale tickets for their upcoming Supernova tour that will stop in 44 towns and cities across the UK.

Founded by dancer and presenter Ashley Banjo , the group rose to fame during their stint on Britain’s Got Talent and, more than a decade on, they’re still going strong.

Giving fans across the country something to look forward to, they released a video teasing the extravaganza that’s set to be one of their biggest tours yet.

Calling it The Supernova Tour, presale tickets will go on sale this Friday, November 18 at 10am for locations including Eastbourne, Northampton, Nottingham, Portsmouth and Cornwall.

Posting an explosive reel hinting at what audiences can expect from the event, the announcement said: ‘We’re so excited to announce we will be touring with a brand new show!

‘THE SUPERNOVA TOUR! We can’t wait to create something special for you all!

Diversity members.

‘Tickets go on general sale 10am Friday 18th November and presale starts this Thursday at 10am. Hit the link in our bio for more info [sic]’.

Fans were quick to virtually share their delight and excitement following the news as congratulatory comments poured in.

One wrote: ‘Can I afford it?! Nope but will I be there Yes yes I will!!! [sic]’

‘Yesssss can’t wait to see you again!! [sic]’, was another’s response.

Members of the group took time out to share their own joy at heading back out on the road with Perri Kiely posting: ‘HERE WE GO AGAIN!! [sic]’ and wife of Ashley, Francesca confirming: ‘It’s happening’.

Diversity performing.

Beginning next October, the tour schedule will continue on into 2024 where it will finish its run in April 2024 at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

This new showcase follows in the wake of the troop’s current sold-out Connected tour that combined comedic routines with routines that made statements on human connectivity.

Never ones to shy away from promoting activism through dance, the group made their mark after winning a Bafta for their take on The Black Lives Matter movement during a performance on Britain’s Got Talent .

Bagging them the award for Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment of 2020, the routine that walked viewers through what happened to George Floyd and the incident’s aftermath, caused a stir after receiving thousands of Ofcom complaints .

Belfast Mela is back! – 23 to 29 Aug

diversity tour belfast

Northern Ireland’s largest cultural diversity festival, the 15th Belfast Mela, sponsored by Sensata Technologies will take place across the city this year starting on Monday 23 August and running until Sunday 29 August

A wonderful line-up of music, dance, cookery, visual art, theatre and wellbeing from around the world is planned, led by artists and performers who have made Northern Ireland their home.

U105’s Carolyn Stewart and UTV’s Paul O’Reilly will host a spectacular FREE ‘Mini Mela’ celebration on Saturday 28 August transforming the city centre into a global village with a pop-up programme of music, dance and art, as current Covid restrictions would make a return to Botanic Gardens for the traditional Mela format unworkable until 2022.

However, all week starting from Monday 23 August, we’ll be bringing the magic of Mela to outdoor spaces and venues across the city – North, South, East and West as well as the city centre with events to celebrate cultural diversity. Highlights include a Silk Road Supper Club evening celebrating food and traditions of our newer communities; a Caribbean Carnival night; the first Global Ceili of its’ kind in the city fusing together Irish trad, Indian and Chinese dance; a spectacular Luminate large scale outdoor lighting event in CS Lewis Square; Taste the World at St George’s Market; as well as lunchtime tasting tours; a beautiful evening of Sufi Music at St Anne’s Cathedral and Wonder Walks, an immersive family storytelling experience.

diversity tour belfast

A spectacular FREE outdoor cinema event is also being planned with showings of Danny Boyle classic Slumdog Millionaire fused together with live Bollywood dance from ArtsEkta’s South Asian Dance Academy and an Indian Summer BBQ on the 28th and 29th August.

Nisha Tandon OBE, Founder of the Belfast Mela and Director, ArtsEkta said:

“Seven is a very special number for this year’s Belfast Mela Festival, with the seven continents and the seven seas we decided to put on seven days of Mela to reflect Northern Ireland’s growing diverse communities from all over the world.

Following our successful Virtual Mela at Home last year which attracted an audience of over a quarter of million people worldwide, we are optimistic that given the current vaccine roll out in Northern Ireland we will be able to put on a series of wonderful events across the city this August.

While it will not be possible again this year to hold the large scale event at Botanic Gardens which normally attracts in excess of 30,000 people, we want to make sure the joy and positivity for which the Belfast Mela is renowned reaches as many people as possible while respecting current public health guidance as we emerge from the pandemic cautiously.

Therefore, we are planning a week-long programme this Summer, with exciting events being organised in a variety of venues and public places in different parts of the city which everyone can enjoy in a safe and responsible way. Audiences can look forward to a spectacular return of Mela at Botanic Gardens in 2022.”

Tickets for selected Belfast Mela events are available to book now via belfastmela.org.uk . Full details of the complete Belfast Mela 2021 programme will be announced in early August.

All events are subject to license and may change at short notice based on updates to public health guidance.

Mela ends on a high as thousands turn out to support our city’s cultural diversity

diversity tour belfast

The largest celebration of cultural diversity on the island of Ireland drew to a close yesterday (Sunday 25 August) at Botanic Gardens with the traditional Mela Day where thousands gathered for a day of music, food, theatre, arts and dance.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray, along with The First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Junior Ministers Aisling Reilly and Pam Cameron; Finance Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, MLA and MPs Claire Hanna and Gavin Robinson were there to show their support for the 18th Belfast Mela Festival, sponsored by Sensata Technologies, which attracted thousands of people with different events held over nine days this year.

Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Micky Murray attended the finale event and said: “I have absolutely loved being part of the Mela Festival this year – once again, it’s shown how culturally diverse our city is becoming – and the richness of experience that diversity brings to our lives and society through friendship, food, music, arts, dance and more from across the world.

“The Mela Day Finale this afternoon was joyous – and seeing Botanic Gardens, one of our city’s most loved parks, transformed and filled with happy faces was really uplifting. Congratulations to ArtsEkta on curating and delivering an incredible festival and thank you for giving me the opportunity to celebrate with you all.”

First Minister Michelle O’Neill ML A said: “The Belfast Mela is a fantastic opportunity to experience and celebrate our incredible cultural diversity, and I was delighted to join in today’s celebrations. The Mela has grown from strength to strength over the past 18 years and I thank Nisha Tandon and her team for all the hard work and dedication that was involved in organising so many fantastic events over the past nine days.

“We have all seen the devastating impact that recent violent disorder and racist attacks have had on our communities. There is no place for racism, intolerance and bigotry in our society. We stand united against hate and will continue to work towards an inclusive future to ensure that this is a place where people are proud to live, work and bring up their families.”

Nisha Tandon OBE, CEO of ArtsEkta, producers of Belfast Mela said:

“What an amazing end to our 18th Belfast Mela Festival – it was great to see so many support the festival despite the poor weather. We’ve had so many people celebrate Belfast’s growing cultural diversity from the opening Mela Carnival through the streets of Belfast, to our Silk Road Supper Club at Academy Belfast, our Citadels of the Sun Concert in The MAC.

“Plus of course our wonderful Mela Day in Botanic Gardens where it all started 18 years ago. Mela has become an important platform for so many diverse communities who now call Belfast home, enabling them to share and express their cultural identity. We will see you all next year for an even bigger celebration.”

Diversity announce Belfast date on 2021 tour

After nine sell out UK and Irish tours, over 600,000 tickets sold, and countless television and live performances Diversity will be embarking one of their biggest UK tours to date in 2021, including a date at Waterfront Hall, Belfast.

But even after all this time, we are still growing, and this new decade and new chapter for Diversity is sure to be something even more special than the last. I truly do believe that we are all connected in more ways than one and I cannot wait to bring this to life on stage.”

A Global Wonderland of Diversity in Belfast

Northern Ireland's biggest celebration of cultural diversity, the Belfast Mela, with new principal sponsor Sensata Technologies was launched at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast this week by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor John Finucane

Up to 30,000 people visit the Belfast Mela each August and this year’s festival promises to be the biggest ever on Sunday 25th August in Botanic Gardens from 12 noon to 6pm hosted by U105’s Carolyn Stewart and UTV’s Paul Reilly and Julian Simmons. The Belfast Mela is a wonderful family day out celebrating Northern Ireland’s increasing cultural diversity with music, dance, food and much more from around the world.

Speaking at the launch, the Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor John Finucane said: “The award winning Mela, launched by the one of the city’s leading cultural groups – ArtsEkta, is now the biggest celebration of cultural diversity on the island of Ireland. Mingling at the Mela (the word actually means “to meet” in Sanskrit) is more than just a fun day out, it is also a tangible and high-profile demonstration of the life-enhancing benefits of diversity. The buoyant vibrancy at Botanic Gardens is a real tribute to Belfast’s welcoming spirit and showcases our capital’s continuously evolving make up.”

Nisha Tandon, OBE, Founder and Executive Director, Arts Ekta says: “The success of Mela is rooted in a desire by all communities across Belfast and beyond to be part of something that represents their own cultural identity. We must continue to move forward together to create a society where everyone is respected and feels a sense of belonging. The Mela represents Belfast as the vibrant, enriched, intercultural and ambitious city it is growing to become. In 2019, we present a bold, vibrant and colourful cultural celebration working with hundreds of artists, locally and internationally, to create a wonderful world of music, dance, food, storytelling and arts for all the family to enjoy together.”

Adriana Morvaiova, Team Development Coordinator and Chair of ACE Network, Sensata Technologies, principal sponsor of Mela says: “We are delighted to be the principal sponsor of the Belfast Mela this year, as diversity in our workplace is very important to Sensata. This is a perfect partnership as both brands are committed to celebrating the best of our communities in Northern Ireland. We are looking forward to taking part in this year’s celebration with special STEM activities for all the family to enjoy in Culture Land.”

The opening procession led by the Lord Mayor of Belfast and other special guests will feature commissioned carnival creations, Bollywood dancers, scores of community participants, spectacular processional sculpture, all set to the sound of a lively brass band from Rajasthan.

Highlights of this year’s Festival include:

Amazing performances from the Kakatsitsi Master Drummers bringing traditional drumming and music from the villages of Ghana as well as DCS, the world’s leading Bhangra band and the return of the Dublin African Gospel Choir and Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band amongst many more.

Brand new to this year’s Mela, is the World of Words zone, a celebration of voices, storytellers and creativity including storytellers Peter Chand (India), Nandi Jola (Africa), Joel Ben Izzy (Canada) and Liz Weir (Ireland)

Carnival style finale based on the popular Dandiya Raas dance style with professional and community dancers as well as carnival props and performers.

Interactive fairy trail in the new Fairy Forest for young children inspired by fairy folklore from across the world.

Chinatown, set along the beautiful backdrop of the park’s Rose Garden, where an installation of traditional lanterns awaits while you can explore the delights of China from traditional arts and crafts, street performances and food sampling by members of the local Chinese community.

Taste The World – From India to China, from Thailand to Poland, from Spain to Mexico, Mela’s World Food Market has a little something for everyone. This year there’s also a wonderful new Artisan Food Pavilion featuring home grown food with a global twist.

Or try Mela’s cookery theatre with demonstrations from East Mediterranean restaurant BUBA and a Kimchi demonstration from The Cultured Club as well as the eye watering chilli eating competition Feast of Fire.

All-rounder Freya Kemp and wicketkeeper-batter Bess Heath will form part of the ODI squad alongside fast bowler Lauren Filer and opener Emma Lamb.

All-rounder Mady Villiers returns to a senior England squad for the first time since 2021.

Director of England Women’s Cricket, Jonathan Finch said: “Following a busy period we are looking forward to finishing off our summer with the tour to Ireland.

“The squad has an exciting mix of experienced international players, those that are returning to a squad having played previously and those yet to take their first steps on the international stage. This is a strong squad made up of many players that have grown from being part of a strengthening domestic game.

“The growing complexity and challenges of managing year-round playing calendars for our international players presents an opportunity for those that have been pushing for selection to be challenged on the international stage.

“Ireland Women are coming off the back of a significant series win against Sri Lanka and this, mixed with playing away from home, will pose a significant challenge.

“It’s always a special moment to see players make their debut and seven could do so on this tour.”
