No rush. no worries. no experience required..

We did the morning tour and this was one of the best San Diego experiences we have done. From start to finish everything was easy. The sailboat was beautiful. Check in was quick and on time. Our group of four found the experience awesome. We live in San Diego and saw so many things we had never seen or even knew about. I'd definitely do this trip again.

Sail San Diego

The whole process of booking and checking in was simple with Sail San Diego. I loved riding with a small group of 6 people in total, it made for a really lovely experience. The captain made the sail fun and interactive. The three hour cruise time when by in a flash, and made me want to book again. I would strongly recommend Sail San Diego for its affordability, value, and expertise and friendliness of its staff.

What a fabulous memory maker! Perfect activity reuniting family from St. Louis and Phoenix with us and our grandchildren. Beautiful sail, accommodating and knowledgeable captain, and spectacular sunset. Can’t wait for more visitors so we can do it again! Read More...

The 7 Best San Diego Boat Tours

Explore this coastal city's sights with a relaxing boat excursion.

Best San Diego Boat Tours

Courtesy of Flagship Cruises & Events

Flagship Cruises & Events takes its visitors out on the water to see San Diego's top attractions.

With its coastal perch and abundance of marine life, San Diego is best explored by boat. Whether you select a high-speed adventure or a relaxed sailboat ride, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the city and an experienced guide by your side. After consulting both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News determined that the following are the best San Diego boat tours.

Note: Some tour providers on this list may be running more limited operations due to COVID-19 or may impose testing or vaccine requirements. Check with your tour operator about availability before you book.

Flagship Cruises & Events – San Diego Harbor Cruise Full Bay Tour

This two-hour, comprehensive trip takes travelers to see the top sights in San Diego Bay, including the Star of India ship, the  Maritime Museum of San Diego , the Coronado Bridge and more. The ship comes equipped with a full-service bar that sells drinks (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and snacks. Tour-takers generally appreciate the guides' narration, which they frequently call both entertaining and informative. However, a few note it was hard to hear the guides at different parts of the ship.

Cruises are available daily with multiple departures in the morning and afternoon. Tickets to ride the triple-decker boats start at $37 for adults and $27.75 for children 4 to 12. If you're short on time, you can opt to take an hourlong cruise of either the north or south section of the bay.

[ View & Book Tickets .]

Sail San Diego – Day Sail – 3 hours

Sail San Diego's three-hour Day Sail can be tailored to focus on San Diego Bay or the Pacific Ocean: it's the passengers' choice. Captains double as tour guides, and tourgoers consistently call them capable, knowledgeable and amusing. Sightings of dolphins and other sea creatures are common.

The approximately $100 ticket price covers the tour itself, parking and use of jackets and binoculars. You'll also enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages (including beer and wine). The tours, which start around 1 p.m. daily, typically have no more than six patrons at a time. Sail San Diego also offers a sunset sail and whale watching excursions.

Speed Boat Adventures – Speed Boat Adventure Tour

Speed Boat Adventure Tours permit visitors to take the helm of a speedboat on this guided tour of San Diego Bay. After providing instructions on how to operate the boats, which can accommodate up to three people, travelers take the wheel while guides provide information and observations via a two-way radio. You'll see the downtown skyline, Navy ships, the USS Midway Museum , Seaport Village and Coronado Bridge as well as various marine animals. Tour-takers regularly describe the guides' commentary as both entertaining and informative.

Tours last roughly 90 minutes and cover 13 miles. Prices vary depending on the number of tour participants (up to three people can ride per boat); a couple can expect to pay approximately $180. Speed Boat Adventures also offers a tour combining the boat ride with the use of electric scooters.

Sea lions are visible year-round in San Diego.

Adventure Whale Watching – Whale Watching

Adventure Whale Watching's tours give people the chance to see a variety of different whale types depending on the season. Travelers can generally see gray, blue, fin, Bryde's and humpback whales in spring and summer, while minke, fin and humpback whales are typically spotted around fall and winter. You could see dolphins, sea lions and seals year-round. Captains piloting the rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) are also naturalists who provide facts about marine life during the three-hour outings. The captains typically win praise from passengers for their knowledge and professionalism.

Tours occur two or three times daily (depending on the season) with morning, noon and afternoon departures. Tickets cost approximately $100 per person. Tours are limited to six passengers. Children younger than 4 may not partake in a public tour; you will need to book a private tour.

Everyday California – La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour

During these approximately 90-minute journeys, paddlers will explore the La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve, where they can see the area's seven sea caves. Kayakers may also glimpse sharks, whales or sea lions, among other marine wildlife. (The area's inhabitants change with the seasons.) You'll also get to see the beauty of La Jolla Cove . Visitors generally say they enjoy the experience and their helpful guides. Some kayakers were dismayed that the sea caves were inaccessible due to unsafe water conditions.

Tours depart multiple times daily and are limited to 20 kayakers (all of whom must be at least 5 years old). Prices vary depending on the day and time you book, though you can expect to pay between $85 and $130 for a kayak (single or double occupancy). Everyday California also offers tours combining kayaking and snorkeling.

Next Level Sailing – Whale Watching

Travelers agree that the wildlife seen on this tour and the yacht's crew make this trip worthwhile. Next Level Sailing spends about four hours on the water to view the different marine species (think: whales and dolphins) that swim in San Diego's waters.

Tours depart at 11 a.m. Saturday through Thursday and 9 a.m. on Friday; you must check in for your tour 30 minutes prior to departure. Tickets start at $85 for adults and $42.50 per child (Saturday and Sunday trips have a slightly higher fee). Next Level Sailing also charters boats for special occasions.

San Diego SEAL Tours

For 90 minutes, you'll tour San Diego on land and sea. But don't worry, you won't need to swap vessels as San Diego SEAL Tours' Hydra-Terra vehicle is amphibious. As you cruise, guides will tell you all about the area's history and point out the bay's resident seals and sea lions, along with San Diego's top attractions . Travelers greatly appreciate the informative guides who crack jokes throughout the tour (though some jokes are a little corny, per reviewers).

Tickets cost about $45 for adults, $30 for children ages 4 to 12 and $10 for toddlers 3 and younger. Tours depart from Seaport Village several times daily beginning at 10 a.m. You could save some coin by combining this outing with a trolley tour.

The new "Hydra Terras" provide you with the unique ability to see America's Finest City on San Diego's only amphibious sightseeing tour. When it comes to water activities, San Diego shines like a rock star on the surfing scene. Take the iconic La Jolla Shores. This spot is a fine choice for newbies due to its mild, rolling waves – but surf-seasoned pros and locals crave the sick swells at LJ Shores too. After slicing through the Shores, heft your surfboard over to the Windansea Surf Shack for a breather. The Shack is a historical landmark ; a true testimony to the decades-old surfing history and culture in La Jolla.

Other spots to “hang ten” in San Diego include Ocean Beach (OB), which receives sweet surges, making surfing prime for any level of experience.  Or, check out Sunset Cliffs – a great place to surf in the winter due to offshore winds from the east. Looking for a high-adrenaline adventure on the water? Rip and ride the tide by jet skiing in Mission Bay. This is the ultimate destination for anyone craving speed and amped-up excitement on the water. Scoot around hidden coves, blaze your way through open waters, or motor alongside sandy beaches – whatever you fancy – Mission Bay will not disappoint.

Say you don’t have a water jet ski? No problem. Mission Bay is a virtual concierge for all your ski-freak needs. Whether you need lessons, equipment, or a jetski rental in San Diego , the Mission Bay Sportcenter is the place to get your ski rush on the water. Check out their Yamaha Waverunner jet ski package – it’s a doozy of a deal and promises untold fun on the waves. Oh, we hate to be a downer here, but when you do jet ski – please do so responsibly and be aware of other people and marine life as you go zoomin’ in the Bay.

If you’re up for something a little more sophisticated than San Diego water sports like jet skiing, Mission Bay continues to show promise for your ultimate water-centric experience. We’re talking about stand-up paddleboarding or SUP.  Due to its mostly mild, mellow waters, Mission Bay is the quintessential place to perfect your SUP skills. SUP can be a highly reflective yet physically intense activity – encouraging oneness with the mind, body, and water while also acing your balance on the board.

You can elevate this connectivity by attending a SUP yoga class where you can do invigorating asanas in the sun while staying perfectly poised on your paddleboard.  Check out Mission Bay Sportcenter for SUP rentals. They also give SUP guided tours – including an enchanting nighttime tour where paddleboards are illuminated with LED lights.  What a phenom way to soulfully savor the brilliance of the Bay!

Splashing into the vastness of the mother ocean by open water swimming can be a vitalizing and exhilarating way to commune with marine life – but it’s not for the faint of heart. First, a few cautionary tips about open-water swimming.

  • You’ve got to know what you’re doing because the ocean can be a fickle, unpredictable mistress.
  • Additionally, be prepared to freeze your biscuits off because that water is frigid and stays super-cold most of the year.
  • Take a buddy, as swimming alone in the leviathan depth and breadth of the ocean isn’t a great idea for obvious reasons.
  • Also, pay close attention to weather and water conditions before you dive in.
  • Lastly – abide by the open swimmer’s code, “When in doubt, get out.”

Now that we’ve covered all the do’s and don’ts – where’s the best place for open water swimming in San Diego? Hands down, La Jolla Cove. This spot offers genial, placid waves that are easier to navigate than other off-shore destinations.  In fact, LJ Cove is so popular for open swimming that the town’s official swim club, The La Jolla Cove Swim Club, puts on an annual tradition known as The La Jolla Cove Swim . Every September, slews of hearty folk come out to swim in the open waters from the LJ Shores to the Cove – and back again.  It’s an epic feat but also invigorating and a fabulous way to connect to the water-loving community in San Diego.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by La Jolla Kayak (@lajollakayak)

Kinda like canoeing but upgraded; kayaking is a low-profile way to get up close and personal with marine life and commune with the SD ways of the water. Using a double-sided paddle, you can row yourself along La Jolla Shores, where you should expect the unexpected.  We picked LJ Shores as an impeccable kayaking destination because you can get on board with guided tours (for which La Jolla is somewhat famous).

One such guided tour takes you from La Jolla Shores, where you can kayak over to La Jolla Cove. This excursion will unveil remarkable views like sea lion sightings, swirling leopard sharks, beautiful bat rays, and so much more.  If you don’t own your own kayak, that’s okay.  Simply check out different kayak rentals or tours, such as La Jolla Kayak – the OG of guided LJ cave tours in the area.

You can also get your paddle fix at San Diego Bay, where you can gawp at the spectacular downtown San Diego skyline or float under the iconic Coronado Bridge.  Mission Bay also has kayak rentals and guided tours where you can launch your ‘yak easily and begin to explore its 27 miles of spectacular shorelines. Because these areas are keenly attuned to water activities in San Diego, you’ll have no problem finding kayak rental services in Mission Bay or San Diego Bay to meet all of your needs.

La Jolla Shores brings a whole new meaning to the dubious turn of phrase, “Swimming with the fishes.”  Snorkeling here is an uplifting, life-affirming way to have face-to-face encounters with magnificent marine life.

When you snorkel at La Jolla Shores , you’re guaranteed to see dazzling orange-colored fish known as Garibaldi, California’s state marine fish and an inspiration for La Jolla’s resident Dr. Seuss. Other awe-inspiring snorkel sightings at the Shores include sea turtles, abalone, lobster, leopard sharks (don’t freak out – they’re harmless), underwater sea caves – and Neptune knows what else you’ll encounter!

Another marvy place to snorkel is at the La Jolla Ecological Reserve and Underwater Park. It’s not a theme park, but it’s definitely an aquatic odyssey that is best enjoyed by snorkeling.  The Reserve & Park covers over 6000 acres of ocean floor and tidelands, revealing jaw-dropping sights such as octopus, urchins, bedazzling starfish, and more. This unique area is somewhat protected from the ocean waves, making an afternoon snorkel game of eye-spy marine life a jolly good treat.

Oh, and don’t let a lack of gear stop you from witnessing stunning underwater beauties and bounty.  There are loads of gear rental shops nearby, like Everyday California, a much-lauded retail spot that will hook you up with snorkels, fins, flippers, accessories, and apparel you need to get your snork on and dive in.

Just be safe out there.  Abide by speedboat laws (there are quite a few, and your speedboat rental rep should inform you about them), be respectful of others in the water, and please keep San Diego beautiful by not littering.

If you’re prone to getting a little woozy on the high seas, this next option might be more your flow.  A catamaran is a big, stable watercraft that has two hefty hulls that minimize the impact of rocky waters, rolling waves, and potential overturns.  The result is a feeling of smooth safety as you enjoy the views of San Diego.

When you look to Malarky Charters for a catamaran rental , you’re in for a real treat. Their spacious catamarans are state-of-the-art and equipped with every imaginable luxury you might need to make your day out at sea an epic experience.  Their watercraft can accommodate up to 11 people easily, and everyone can enjoy roomy cabins, lavish lounge areas, and bow-to-stern seating so you and your guests can savor the SoCal water scene in style.

If the aforementioned water activities in San Diego don’t float your boat (pardon the pun – but you knew we were going to slide one in at some point) – then going space-age might be your scene.  Jetpacking, flyboarding, and hoverboarding are ultra-modern methods to enjoy the SoCal sun and waves in a new-fangled, super-slick way. These remarkable contraptions give you the ultimate adrenaline rush as you jet above the open waters of the Pacific while looking slightly like an alien or freaky water astronaut.

Just so you know – there are a few learning curves involved with jetting, flying, and hovering over SD waters in these James Bond types of devices.

  • You must be 13 years or older.
  • You should understand that you’re not going to be an ace at it on your first outing.
  • Maintaining balance requires some coordination.
  • Physical strength is a plus as you go jet-propelling above the water.

Will you look cool? Absolutely.  Will you have fun? Most definitely.

Just know these forms of aquatic adventure aren’t for everyone so do your research before you try any of these water activities out.  Check out Aquatic Aviation in San Diego for more information.

Okay, so this is a water-adjacent activity in that you’re not really fully submerged in the deep blue sea while parasailing.  However, you’re going to love the stunning aerial views of San Diego’s coastline and the peaceful yet thrilling sensation of this water activity.

Parasailing (also known as paraskiing, parakiting, or parascending) is a bliss-packed adventure where you’re being propelled by a motorboat or vehicle while attached to a parachute-like device.  The end result is that you’re launched into the air above the bays, beaches, and Pacific staring into an abyss of the most gobsmacking views you can imagine.

Not to mention – this must-do experience of being lifted into the ethers and feeling the rushing wind moving you through unparalleled views is simply intoxicating.  Check out Go Parasailing in San Diego.  These experts have been in business since 1989 and know all the ins and outs of parasailing skills.  They’ll also keep you safe while you experience the lofty experience of a lifetime in San Diego.

For instance, take Learn to Sail San Diego. They offer students a boutique experience with multiple different types of lessons. Lifetime Things To Do in San Diego

1. go whale watching.

Topping our list of things to do in San Diego is going whale watching. Gray whales and dolphins both use these waters for migration so it’s a great way to see them up close in their natural habitat all year round.

Depending on the species you want to see, here are the best times to go whale watching:

  • Gray whales: Best viewed from December to April
  • Blue whales and Humpback whales: Best viewing is from mid-June to September

During this whale watching tour , you’ll be aboard the America, a replica of a historic sailing ship. On board, you’ll have an expert guide who will share fascinating facts about the marine animals and the US Navy sites you pass.

The boat uses wind power, which helps you get closer to the animals without scaring them off.

One thing to note is that this cruise isn’t wheelchair accessible.

Pro Tip : We recommend bringing extra layers, even if the weather seems warm on shore. It can get quite chilly on the water. Also, be sure to arrive on time, check-in opens an hour before sail time and closes 30 minutes before the boat departs.

2. Kayak the La Jolla Sea Caves

Going kayaking in the La Jolla Sea Caves is an exciting way to explore one of San Diego’s most beautiful natural spots.

As you paddle through the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, you might spot leopard sharks, turtles, sea lions, and maybe even some dolphins.

Your tour guide will give you plenty of information about the wildlife you see as well as lead you safely through the sea caves.

Although the tour states it’s suitable for ages 6 and above, changing sea conditions might make this difficult for families with very young kids.

Pro Tip: Bring a waterproof bag for your phone and keys. This way, you can skip the $8 locker fee and keep your stuff safe and dry while on the kayak.

3. Snorkel or Dive with Leopard Sharks in La Jolla Cove

Sticking with the La Jolla Reserve, another great way to experience it is to go snorkeling or diving with leopard sharks .

Before setting off, you’ll be given a mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit as well as have a quick lesson on the basics of snorkeling. You’ll then go with your experienced guides and get to swim alongside these harmless sharks, as well as other vibrant reef fish.

You must be comfortable in the water to do this tour. Also, keep in mind that you might not be able to explore the sea caves if conditions are deemed too dangerous.

Pro Tip: We recommend snorkeling in the early morning – they do a 10.30 am tour. This is when the water is clearer and there are fewer crowds.

4. Pedal for Fun and Fitness on San Diego’s Hydrobikes

A fun and energetic way to explore Mission Bay’s waters is on a Hydrobike .

The bikes can get to speeds of up to 10 miles an hour and are easy to ride. They are also very stable – they’re nearly impossible to tip over making them a great activity for all ages.

Pro Tip: There are two locations to hire the Hydrobikes from, either Aqua Adventures on Mission Bay or Disco’s Paddle Surf on San Diego Bay. It’s a good idea to make a reservation, especially during busy times, to make sure you get a bike when you want one.

5. Explore the Depths of Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave

Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave is an interesting way to learn about La Jolla’s history.

You’ll go down 144 steps through a tunnel dug in 1902, which was once used for bootlegging.

The tour is self-guided and only takes about 15-20 minutes to do.

Be aware that the steps can be slippery, and some people feel the $10 entry fee is a bit much for a short visit.

Pro Tip: Wear shoes with a good grip to avoid slipping on the stairs, and try to go on a sunny day to enjoy the best views from the cave.

6. Wander Through Harper’s Topiary Garden

If you’re passing by the Mission Hills area, then stop by to look at Harper’s Topiary Garden .

This creative front yard has over 50 life-sized figurines, all carefully sculpted from shrubs by the homeowners. Each plant has been shaped into animals, people, and other interesting designs inspired by the couple’s travels around the world.

The garden is on a hillside, so you can’t walk through it—it’s more of a quick stop to snap some photos.

Pro Tip: Since the garden is on a street, it’s best to visit during off-peak times to avoid traffic and get better photos without cars in the way.

7. Watch the Sunset at Broken Hill

Broken Hill in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is one of the best places to watch the sunset.

The 3.5-mile loop trail takes you through diverse landscapes, and the view at sunset is worth the hike. The trail is moderately challenging. There’s a parking fee if you use the main lot, though you can park for free along Torrey Pines Road and walk in.

Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.

Pro Tip: Arrive early to find a good parking spot before it gets too crowded for the sunset, this hike is popular.

8. Glide Above Torrey Pines at the Gliderport

At Torrey Pines Gliderport you can feel the excitement of paragliding or hang gliding while taking in the beautiful views of the California coast.

This historic aviation site has been a hub for flight enthusiasts for nearly 100 years.

Whether you’re looking to take lessons, try a tandem flight, or just watch others soar, this is the place to do it.

Pro Tip: This experience is weather-dependent, so check in regularly with the flight center as your plans might change if the wind isn’t right.

9. Walk the Spruce Street Suspension Bridge

The Spruce Street Suspension Bridge allows you to walk 375 feet across a historic footbridge suspended 70 feet above Sessions Canyon.

It was built in 1912, to allow pedestrians to get to the new trolley lines built on Fourth and Fifth Avenue.

It’s worth knowing that the bridge sways slightly in the wind, which might be scary if you’re afraid of heights, and it’s not safe for young children as there are wide gaps in the railings.

Pro Tip: If you visit, try going early in the morning or during the day – it’s a popular hangout in the evenings.

10. Discover History at the San Diego Museum of Us

Museum of Us is a museum that focuses on cultural anthropology and also acknowledges its location on the ancestral homeland of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Different rooms cover a variety of exhibits which are all housed in an ornate 1915 building. Some temporary exhibitions have an additional fee.

Spend an afternoon touring the decks of a legendary aircraft carrier.

The USS Midway Museum is packed with interactive exhibits making it a great option for families. The flight deck is a must-see, where you’ll find an impressive collection of planes.

Pro Tip: One slight annoyance is that some sections of the ship start closing early, which can be disappointing if you arrive later in the day. So plan to arrive early.

12. Hike Through a Slot Canyon

Slot canyons are nature’s hidden gems, carved over time by rushing water that creates narrow, deep gorges with towering, smooth walls. These dramatic landscapes offer a unique and awe-inspiring experience, perfect for adventurous hikers and photographers.

The most popular slot canyon hike is The Slot located in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. This hike has narrow passageways and towering sandstone walls.

Located north of San Diego in Cardiff, Annie’s Canyon is another option that’s an easy hike with some strenuous portions. There are 3 ways to get to this trail: via Solana Hills, via Poco and via Rios Ave and each trail’s length varies.

If you’re in the La Jolla, then you can choose the Ho Chi Minh Trail . It’s an adventurous out-and-back hike known for its challenging terrain, narrow slotted canyons, and panoramic views.

13. See the Scenic Salt Mountains

Seeing the Scenic Salt Mountains at the South Bay Salt Works gives you a glimpse into San Diego’s industrial history. They are the second oldest business in the city and have been around since the 1870s.

The area is a little off the beaten path and feels a little rundown, with trash and the occasional unpleasant smell.

Cybersecurity Flaws Could Derail High-profile Cycling Races

Computer scientists are working with a leading manufacturer to prevent attacks

High-end bicycles used for high-profile road races such as the Tour de France are vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks targeting the bike’s wireless gear shifting system.

In recent years, bicycle manufacturers have adopted wireless gear-shifting technology, which gives riders better control over changing gears. The technology is not vulnerable to the physical issues that plague mechanical systems. However, the way the wireless systems were built created critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities, which a team of computer scientists from the University of California San Diego and Northeastern University have uncovered.

“Security vulnerabilities in wireless gear-shifting systems can critically impact rider safety and  performance, particularly in professional bike races,” the researchers write. “In these races, attackers could exploit these weaknesses to gain an unfair advantage, potentially causing crashes or injuries by manipulating gear shifts or jamming the shifting operation.”

The researchers are now working with Shimano, one of the leading bicycle component manufacturers, to patch the vulnerabilities. They focused on Shimano because the company has the largest market share for wireless gear shifters.  Researchers  will present their work at the 18th USENIX WOOT Conference, which will be held on August 12 and 13 in Philadelphia.

The gear shifting system works by deploying wireless links between the gear shifters controlled by the riders and the device that moves chains between gears on the bike, called a derailleur.

The team uncovered three key vulnerabilities within this wireless system:

Attackers can record and retransmit gear-shifting commands, allowing them to control gear-shifting on the bike without the need for authentication via cryptographic keys. The research team successfully conducted record and replay attacks from a distance of up to 10 meters (roughly 10 yards) using off the shelf devices known as software-defined radios, without needing an amplifier to boost signal strength. Recorded data could be reused anytime, provided the bike components remain paired.

Attackers can also easily disable and jam gear shifting on a specific bike without affecting nearby systems, creating significant risks for riders.

The wireless system used a communication protocol, ANT+, which leaks information, allowing attackers to monitor what their target is doing in real-time.

“The history of professional cycling's struggles with illegal performance-enhancing drugs underscores the appeal of such undetectable attacks, which could similarly compromise the sport's integrity. Given these risks, it is essential to adopt an adversary's viewpoint and ensure that this technology can withstand motivated attackers in the highly competitive environment of professional cycling,” researchers add.

Researchers developed several countermeasures to prevent replay attacks, mitigate targeted jamming, and prevent information leakage. Shimano has already implemented some of these measures and a new update will make them widely available soon.
