Your Current Visa Permits You to Stay Less than 6 Months

If, for example, the Home Office approved you to stay in the UK for months, but you need to stay longer, you can get an extension and stay for an extra 2 months. This brings your total stay to 6 months.

Medical Reasons

If you are taking treatment in the UK but still need time for more treatment and recuperation, you can extend your stay. You need to prove that:

  • You have paid for all the treatment you have received so far.
  • You still have enough money to pay for more treatments.

You can keep extending the Visitor visa on this premise every 6 months until you can return to Ghana.

An Academic

If you were initially permitted to stay in the UK for less than 12 months, say 6 months. You can extend a standard visitor visa for up to 12 months. This is only possible if you have at least a PhD and are not taking up permanent employment.

If you need to retake the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test, you can extend your visa for up to 180 days. You must provide proof from the General Medical Council that you are resitting the test.

Dental Observer or Clinical Attachment

If you eventually pass the PLAB test, you can extend your visa to 18 months to be a dental observer or do clinical attachment. You’ll need to prove you have an attachment offer and are not required to treat patients. You’ll also need to prove that you have never done dental observation or attachment in the UK.

Note that for whatever reason you wish to extend your stay, you’ll pay an extension fee of £1,000.

You have never made any application for a UK visa and do not know how to proceed. What must you do to enable you make the application for a visa?

Log-in to the Visa Application Website

On the same page, you would be required to select your “Visa Type”. This part is very important since the selection of an incorrect “Visa Type” may lead to the refusal of your application or the payment of an incorrect visa fee.

You would first be required to select “Reason for Visit”. The options are “Visit”, “Study”, “Work”, “Settlement”, “Transit”, “Other”, and “Exempt”. Since the reason for your travel is to attend a business meeting, “Visit” would be the appropriate option.

Next is to select the “Visa Type”. Some of the choices are “Tourism”, “Family” and “Business”. Based on the reasons for your visit, “Business” would be your appropriate option.

If you were visiting a friend or family in the UK, your choice should have been “Family” much the same way your choice should have been “Tourism” if you were visiting as a tourist.

The next step is to select the “Visa sub Type” which is usually the duration of the “Visa Type” which is usually 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years.

What if I am unable to complete the Form in one Step?

If you are unable to complete the Form in one step, you have the option to save it and return to it at a later date. If you wish to return to the Form, you must log in to the visa application website www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk .

How do I pay for my Visa Fee?

The visa application website does not have the facility to accept cash payments. You can only make payment by credit or debit card. In Ghana, most ATM cards with the “Visa” or “Master Card” logo should be able to make the payment.

If you do not have an appropriate card, you may contact a friend or relative to make the payment on your behalf. The current fee for a visit visa is £87. Once payment is made, a confirmation of the appointment should be available on your page for you to print and submit same with your documents at the Visa Application Centre.

South Africa and Botswana citizens will no longer be allowed visa-free travel to Ireland

Papers to be required for citizens of both countries as additional measure to address the sharp rise in international protection applicants in 2024.

Citizens of Botswana and South Africa will be required to obtain a visa to travel to Ireland from next week under arrangements announced by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee.

People who have travelled from either country to Ireland have not until now required visas to enter the State. Both have also been designated as safe countries of origin.

The move is being taken in light of what the Department of Justice has described as “a significant number of international protection applications” being received from nationals of Botswana and South Africa.

Neither country featured in the top five nationalities of the more than 9,000 people who applied for international protection in the five months to the end of May. Nearly one in three (2,843) applications were made by citizens of Nigeria, followed by Jordan (718), Pakistan (677), Bangladesh (600) and Somalia (586). Less than 500 applications combined were made by people from South Africa and Botswana.

Ms McEntee said South Africa and Botswana were the only countries on the safe list that did not require its citizens to obtain visas before travelling to Ireland.

“This is a carefully considered decision which will bring Ireland into closer alignment with the Schengen Area in respect of both of these countries, and into line with the UK in respect of South Africa,” she said. “Irish visa requirements are kept under ongoing review, having regard to the need to ensure that effective immigration controls are in place whilst also facilitating those who wish to travel to Ireland for the purposes of a visit, to work, to study, or to join family members.”

The Minister said the Dublin visa office would now establish a dedicated “South Africa desk” to process applications from South African nationals. She said the Department of Foreign Affairs would also establish three visa application centres, located throughout South Africa, with visa service provider Global VFS.

The Government has introduced a raft of measures and restrictions following a sharp increase in the number of people seeking asylum on arrival into the State. By the end of May, the number of people who had applied for international protection was more than double the total who applied in the same five-month period last year.

Among the new measures is an accelerated processing period for those who are citizens of the country that has had the most asylum applications, irrespective of it being designated a safe country of origin. At present, that applies to Nigerian nationals.

Some 115 people have been arrested in the first half of this year for arriving without appropriate documentation and a significant number have been convicted. Document checks of people crossing the border from Northern Ireland have also been stepped up as a response to evidence of an increasing number of people using the land and sea route from Britain via Northern Ireland to enter the State.
