Dolphin Watching Tour of South Padre Island

Dolphin cruises are one of our favorite things to do on South Padre Island TX. The waters near South Padre Island host several resident pods of dolphins. The pods with younger dolphins are more playful and love to jump, splash, and flip in the air.

If you’re lucky, you can even spot mama dolphins with small babies by their side. The dolphins often swim alongside boats and may follow them for quite a distance.

Dolphin cruises are the most popular South Padre Island attractions

Out of the many available options, how do you select a dolphin tour?

We recommend choosing one that is eco friendly. Additionally, tours that offer a personal experience, accommodating 4 to 6 people in a small boat, are preferable to those that cater to large groups. Dolphins tend to come much closer to pontoons than they do to larger, more intimidating boats.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is one of the most fun things to do in South Padre Island with family. The center is located right next to the Convention Center. It offers the perfect opportunity to learn about the Gulf Coast’s wildlife, including a variety of birds, pelicans, sea turtles, dolphins, and alligators.

There are several attractions at the center, including a butterfly garden, watchtower that offers bird’s-eye views of the area, birding trails, as well as an alligator sanctuary. The Nature Center entry fee is quite nominal and well worth the experience.

Indoor Attractions

The center offers informative talks about the alligators a few times during the day. For an additional price, you can choose to touch a baby alligator and a non-venomous snake afterwards. We opted for this and our kids loved the unique opportunity. The encounter is completely ethical as the baby alligator is a rescued one, and not intentionally taken from its mother.

While inside the center, you should climb up to the 5 story watchtower to see panoramic views along the Laguna Madre. The views from up there are really spectacular. This is also one of the most romantic spots on the island. On our trip, we saw a proposal take place here – complete with rose petals arranged by the Nature Center staff.

The Viewing Tower offers incredible views

Outdoor Attractions

The outdoor Monarch Butterfly Garden is the perfect place to spot a kaleidoscope of Monarch butterflies during the migrating season. Every October they celebrate butterfly migration events complete with live music, native plant sale, butterfly garden tours, and activities for kids – face painting and costume contest!

Next Stop – The Alligator Sanctuary! All the alligators in the sanctuary are rescued from roadsides, backyards, or peoples homes. The center provides them with a safe environment. From the boardwalk path, you can see several juvenile alligators sunning themselves. Keep an eye out for Big Padre, the 50-year-old resident alligator.

Boardwalk Trail as seen from the top of the Viewing Tower

The highlight of a visit to the SPI Birding and Nature Center is, however, the birding trail. This South Padre Island boardwalk trail is over 3300 feet long and takes you out over the wetlands. Visitors can spot resident as well as migratory birds including pelicans, oystercatchers, spoonbills, thrushes, falcons, several types of ducks, and warblers. The 5 bird blinds on the trail are great to sit and observe the birds.

We recommend keeping aside 2 to 3 hours to see the Nature Center exhibits and hike the trails. Be sure to stop at their gift shop before you head out. This is the best place on South Padre Island to buy ethically sourced nature-themed souvenirs.

Sea Turtle Inc plays a very important role in the community. It serves as an aquarium / animal hospital / rehabilitation center / ecotourism attraction. The center provides a permanent home to several injured sea turtles who can never be released in the wild.

It is amazing to watch the sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc and read their stories

Any time you visit, the center is likely to have several injured marine turtle species under care and observation. Visitors can also attend a sea turtle feeding, which is an amazing experience for kids. Our son was able to feed them lettuce – a memory he remembers very well.

Sea Turtle Inc also has several exhibits that help visitors learn about the different sea turtle species. They can touch the gigantic turtle shells. Visitors also learn how human generated trash – such as plastic bottles and fishing nets – harm the sea turtles. Our kids were really moved by how the trash thrown in the ocean can change a sea turtle’s life forever. Since then they have been diligent about picking up trash on the beach.

Located near Gravity Park, the tent venue is home to amazing themed sandcastles that are updated for occasions such as Valentines Day and Spring Break.

We also love the Sea Turtle Art Trail . This trail features vibrant painted fiberglass sea turtles placed at strategic locations throughout the island. Each turtle is decorated with its own unique design, making for colorful photo opportunities.

Cristo de Los Pescadores statue

On the south side of the island, within Isla Blanca Park, you will find the statue of ‘Christ of the Fishermen’ or Cristo de Los Pescadores . This memorial is built to honor fishermen that were lost at sea. Along the base of the statue, you will discover sad but beautiful inscriptions written in memory of those who never returned. Reading the epitaphs is a moving experience.

Cristo de Los Pescadores Statue on South Padre Island

The statue reminds me of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in Brazil with its open arms and kind expression. The views of the Gulf from near the statue are stunning. There is a picnic table located just near the statue, which is perfect for a nice lunch.

Visitors need to pay a small fee to access this area on the south side of the island, but that gives access to many amenities including the pristine beaches and changing rooms found here.

Playa Blanca

At the southernmost tip of the island, inside the Isla Blanca Park , you will find the beautiful Island Blanca beach. Better known as Playa Blanca, this beach is one of the least crowded ones on the island due to the entry fee required to visit this part of the island.

Many visitors who stay near the north side of the island in large resorts and hotels, simply miss out on this excellent beach. You will also find a large boardwalk here as well as restrooms and other amenities. We love visiting this beach and always have great fun playing in the sand and swimming in the water.

Chapel By The Sea

Chapel by the Sea is a must for those who are looking for a place to worship on the island as well as architecture lovers. This is one of the most charming churches I have stumbled upon. It is located on the south side of the island near Isla Blanca Park.

The exterior is a striking white-washed building set amongst the swaying palm trees. Mosaic tile steps will take you inside the chapel. The interior is equally gorgeous. The floor to ceiling windows make the chapel airy and full of natural light. The windows offer amazing views of the island.

The service here is a powerful spiritual experience. You will see a lot of Winter Texans walk in flip flops and beachwear to attend service. The sermon is straight from the Bible and the music is excellent. The church also holds many other activities throughout the year. The Chapel by the Sea is also a popular wedding spot on South Padre Island.

The center also offers eco-friendly dolphin cruises. Their dolphin tours are on smaller pontoon boats that don’t disturb marine life. They do not drag nets through the water to trap creatures for tourists to see like few other tours. Instead, they take you out on the water to see the marine animals in their natural environment.

The person who makes this magic happen is Scarlett, the dolphin whisperer and her friendly dolphin dogs who can sense the dolphins before you see them. She takes you down in her well-maintained pontoon. Families love seeing the dolphins and kids are amazed to see them leap and play in the water.

The center as well as its dolphin tours are currently closed .

Why Go To South Padre Island

Every March, like clockwork, students cram into cars and head to South Padre Island for spring break fun in the sun and 24-hour beach bashes. While the island is still home to spring breakers for just over a month, the area has seen a rebirth of sorts as a popular family vacation destination. That's because South Padre, or SPI, delivers with wide sandy beaches, sparkling blue water and a mixture of fun activities for kids of all ages.

But there’s more to SPI than beach revelry. Kiteboarding is a favorite pastime and several sports outfitters offer deep-sea fishing trips and dolphin-watching excursions. The consistently warm weather also seduces northern Texans seeking refuge from the cold. And it's understandable: Just a day's drive from major Texas cities like  Houston  and  Dallas , this seaside paradise is right in the state's own backyard.

South Padre Island Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit South Padre Island is from September to February. Unless you are planning to join in on the spring break fun – rowdy partying at all hours of the day – you'll find this tiny town rather unbearable in March. However, during the other 11 months out of the year, SPI exudes a relaxed aura perfect for sun-seekers and families. Plus hotel rates are reasonably low compared to other beach destinations. Just be advised that if you're planning a summer trip, there's a slight chance you'll encounter some unfriendly hurricane weather.

Weather in South Padre Island

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

Spring break is still big  For six weeks out of the year, South Padre overflows with rowdy 20-somethings, which can ruin your family-friendly getaway.

Safety first  If you're in town for spring break, remember that the bright sunshine can maximize the effects of alcohol. Don't forget to eat regularly, drink plenty of water and keep your friends close by.

Know which way the storm is headed  If you're visiting between June and November, make sure to pay close attention to the weather. South Padre is sometimes prone to hurricanes.

How to Save Money in South Padre Island

Reserve in advance  Although it's not hard to find a decent room, consider booking at least a few weeks in advance, especially during the winter when SPI welcomes an influx of snowbirds.

Leave the car behind  Don't waste money on a rental car. South Padre is small enough to explore on foot and the free  Island Metro  offers regular transportation around town and across Laguna Madre to Port Isabel.

Avoid spring break rates  As March approaches, hotel rates are known to triple. If you want to go in the spring, aim for late April or May.

What to Eat

One of the perks of vacationing at a beach destination is the fresh seafood, and SPI is no different. Enjoy a plate of fresh oysters while watching the dolphins play in the Gulf, or you can sample one of the many types of fish that can be found in Laguna Madre, including marlin, red snapper, kingfish and flounder.  Cafe on the Beach  at the Palms resort and  Beachside Bar & Grill  at the Pearl South Padre Island Resort are beloved spots offering ocean views, outdoor seating and a wide array of excellent seafood dishes.

Thanks to the large influx of tourism, the South Padre restaurant scene has diversified and you can now find establishments serving everything from Polynesian to Italian fare.  Barry's International South Padre Island  has everything from Tex-Mex to Italian to seafood dishes. The island is also home to numerous burger joints – Padre Island Brewing Company  is a popular spot where typical American fare is served and the local brews are abundant. For something sweet, reviewers say you can't go wrong with the pancakes at Yummies Bistro .

South Padre Island is a popular spring break destination; unless you're looking to join the party, avoid this area in March. Other times of the year, however, South Padre is generally a safe and quiet vacation destination.

Getting Around South Padre Island

The best way to get around South Padre Island is on foot, especially since the area clocks in at 2 square miles in size (much of which is shoreline). There is also a free public shuttle,  Island Metro , which runs the length of the town and across Laguna Madre to Port Isabel. However, if you're interested in visiting some of the other outlying communities, you may want to rent a car. Getting into town from the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) – located about 25 miles southwest – can seem daunting, but you can make the trip without having to worry about overspending. Island Airport Shuttles pick up at the airport and can take you as far as Port Isabel where you can catch the Island Metro. Visitors can also fly into Valley International Airport (VIA) in Harlingen – about 40 miles west of South Padre – and catch the  South Padre Shuttle  to the island (one-way fares cost $35 per passenger). Car rentals are also available.

White sand beaches and crystal waters welcome many sea-loving tourists.

The Top 14 Things to Do on South Padre Island

when to visit south padre island

South Padre Island (or SPI, as locals like to call it) may be best known for being a popular spot for spring breakers in Texas, but this coastal destination is so much more than a party paradise. Sitting at the southern tip of the Lone Star State, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the calm waters of the Laguna Madre on the other, South Padre is a nature lover’s dream. Aside from frolicking in the waves and soaking up the sun on one of the many beaches here, visitors can go hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, or visit a sea turtle sanctuary or nature center. There’s also plenty of great seafood and shopping to be had. All you have to do is avoid the island in March to escape the college-age crowds.

Clayton's Beach Bar & Event Venue

Billed as the “biggest beach bar in Texas,” Clayton’s Beach Bar boasts excellent oceanside views, a scrumptious fresh seafood menu, and signature-brand Turbo Piña Coladas (proceed with caution). This lively, iconic restaurant also has fireworks on the beach every weekend, “fitness beach parties,” and regular live music performances. What draws people to Bobz World the most is this: it is home to the biggest arena for laser tag in all of the state of Texas.

If that’s not up your alley, you can play some mini-golf lit only by black lights or go to the video arcade that boasts a whopping 50 or more games.

There is also a really beautiful botanical garden and a fairly interesting museum with 20 exhibits.

The garden is themed after Jurassic dinosaurs and spans one acre, boasting flora interspersed with sculpted animals and dinos and the odd waterfall or two.

If you get hungry, head to Tidal Wave Cafe.

Here, they serve burgers, pizza, and a rather impressive 32 different flavors of ice cream.

Don’t forget to start by the gift shop for souvenirs, too.

Some of the most fascinating tourist attractions in this part of Texas are the SpaceX Rocket Launches .

You’ve likely already heard about them, as the internet has been abuzz with all sorts of excitement and opinion regarding these launches.

Check the schedule for launches, and if you’re around at the right time, you can travel across the island and out past the bay to head to Boca Chica where one of these launch sites is for a front-row seat.

SpaceX Rocket Launch, despite its controversies, is certainly making history.

This is where some of the planet’s most advanced technology in rockets and rocket science are tested and displayed.

Do note that launches depend on the weather and can be canceled due to equipment failure.

It’s not uncommon for launches to move, so be ready for that possibility!

Still, with just 5 miles to travel from South Padre, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed.

The Best Things to Do on South Padre Island

Hit the beach.

Of course, this is the number one South Padre Island attraction and the biggest reason that the island is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Texas (not to mention one of the most popular places to spend spring break in Texas )!

South Padre boasts more than 30 miles of sandy Texas beaches , lined with hotels and restaurants and dotted with 28 public access points.

Whether you’re looking to be in the center of the action or to find a quiet stretch of sand far away from the crowds, the beach at South Padre has you covered.

Stroll along the Laguna Madre Nature Trail at sunset.

Located on the bay side of SPI sits the charming Laguna Madre Nature Trail.

This short stretch of boardwalk trails is a great place to spot an enormous variety of wild birds, as well as fish on the bay, or simply enjoy the sunset views.

You can find the entrance to the trail right next door to the convention center, making parking incredibly easy when there aren’t any events going on.

It’s one of the more peaceful corners of the island and definitely belongs on any list of the best things to do in South Padre.

Visit Sea Turtle, Inc.

Founded in 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. is well-known across the island as an organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured sea turtles, as well as the general conservation of the species.

Visiting the facility is a special experience, and definitely worth taking part in!

A convention center may be a strange place to recommend someone visit on vacation, but South Padre Island’s convention center is different.

The exterior of the convention center is covered in absolutely beautiful murals, and they are definitely worth visiting.

Plus, since South Padre Island is small and located right next door to the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, it’s very easy to access!

Cruise the island in a golf cart.

Not staying right on the ocean and don’t want to pull your car out for every trip to the beach?

No problem: renting a golf cart to explore for a day (or longer) is one of the most popular ways to get around South Padre Island.

Go horseback riding on the beach.

Enjoying the beauty of the island’s beach from horseback is, without a doubt, one of the best things to do on South Padre Island and an unforgettable experience!

For even more beautiful views, schedule your ride at sunset.

Just over the causeway from South Padre Island sits the charming small town of Port Isabel , complete with its adorable 19th-century lighthouse.

Consider climbing to the top (it’s not tall as far as lighthouses go) for a great view of the lagoon.

Get your adrenaline pumping by going skydiving!

Is parasailing not quite adventurous enough for you?

Give skydiving a whirl during your South Padre vacation!

Eat all the fried fish you can handle.

South Padre Island is known for its delicious fried fish, served fresh from the Gulf of Mexico.

Some restaurants will even cook your own catch for you–fish doesn’t get much fresher than that!

Get a bird’s eye view of South Padre Island on a parasailing tour.

Arguably the best way to appreciate just how long and beautiful South Padre’s beach is is to admire it from above.

A parasailing tour is a perfect way to see the island from a unique angle.

Be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins while you’re up there!

Go fishing from the beach or pier.

Fishing is one of the most popular things to do in South Padre, and nowhere is it simpler than at the Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier, which is the longest fishing pier in Texas!

You can find more details on places to fish from the shore on South Padre here .

Go surfing!

South Padre Island is home to the best surfing in Texas, with fun breaks to experience year-round.

Head out on a dolphin-watching tour.

One of the most fun things to do on South Padre Island is to hit the water on a dolphin-watching tour to admire these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

Several pods of dolphins call the water around South Padre home year-round, and a dolphin-watching tour is a perfect way to try to catch a glimpse of them.

Catch the fireworks on summer weekend nights.

On South Padre Island, fireworks aren’t just for holidays!

On Friday and Saturday nights during the summer, you can catch a firework show at Clayton’s, the self-declared biggest beach bar in Texas.

The water is much calmer on the Laguna Madre Lagoon than it is in the Gulf of Mexico, making this side of the island a fantastic place to go kayaking or to give SUP a try!

Take sandcastle building lessons.

Get a whole new perspective on a childhood favorite by adding a sandcastle-building lesson to your plans for what to do on South Padre Island.

The engineering and craftsmanship that goes into a detailed sandcastle is incredibly fun to experience at any age.

Plus, there’s a very good chance that by the end of the lesson you’ll have made your personal best sandcastle of all time!

Where to Stay on South Padre Island

South Padre is an extremely thin barrier island, and for that reason, there’s no such thing as a place to stay that’s far from the beach!

Most hotels are right on the Gulf of Mexico, with a smaller number on the lagoon.

There are some hotels and especially condos for rent that are not directly on the water, however, they’re no more than a short walk or very quick drive away from sticking your toes in the sand!

The Hilton Garden Inn is the best-rated beachfront hotel on South Padre Island, featuring excellent reviews, a beautiful pool, and direct access to a quieter part of the beach.

This is one of the last hotels you’ll reach when driving onto the island, which is perfect for travelers looking to have a bit more space to spread out on the beach.

The hotel is also practically right across the street from Sea Turtle, Inc. and from the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, making those sights easy to access (though honestly, nothing is ever hard to access on South Padre).

The best time to visit south padre island, tx.

South Padre Island’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination, with the exception of during the occasional hurricane.

The summers are uncomfortably humid, but if you’re planning to stick near the water, it’s definitely manageable.

January is the coldest month of the year, with average temperatures reaching a high of  69° (in other words, SPI makes a great warm-weather US destination for those looking to escape winter cold).

August is the hottest month of the year, with average high temperatures of 90°.

Unless you hope to join in the raucous party with thousands of college students enjoying Spring Break , it’s best to avoid visiting South Padre Island in March.

Regardless of when you visit, though, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do on South Padre Island!

We will be there 12/20 thru 12/25 any Christmas activities or lights to see

Yes! I’d definitely check out the Holiday Sandcastle Village. :-)

Even though spring breakers come to the island in March its usually 2 weeks. And even at that most the kids don’t start stirring until later in the afternoon. They mostly congregate at certain places of entertainment. Our kids with elementary and middle school kids always come during spring break (We live here) and NEVER had a problem with Flux of spring breakers.

Go the the farmers market on Sundays. It is located north of the convention center.

Is the farmers market own year round?

Hi! Love all your info on here. Which 2 weeks or March are the busiest for spring breakers

Hmm… I’d hazard a guess at the middle two weeks of March being busiest, but with different schools having different schedules, the whole month is known for being very busy!

We are going to be in south padre March 24 -April 5th. Hopefully we will get to do some of these things. So excited we can’t wait!!

Hope you have a wonderful trip! :-)

Gathering info to book a vaca in SPI. Maybe you can answer a couple questions, please. Is dolphin viewing tour better some months than others ? What months are the fireworks?

What is the weather over Thanksgiving ? What would activities be to do this time of year? Fly in Brownsville right?

Texas’ Only Tropical Island, Where Skyscrapers Never Block the Ocean Sunrise

Wide open skies, long farm roads, seven-lane interstates outside the cities, H-E-Bs bigger than some northern strip malls. Texas   is big and wide and it feels like it. Crossing it by road gives you a sense of wonder that reality often scrubs away. That's what the drive down to South Padre Island is like. This is the only tropical island in Texas where skyscraper hotels don't hide the ocean shoreline between the streets. Where you can cook your catch and dine later at big city-quality restaurants on the same island strip. Welcome to South Padre Island, it's waiting for you.

I went to South Padre in January 2020 and had what I consider the perfect long weekend trip. Here's our itinerary, with thanks to all of the kind vendors who hosted Wide Open Eats. South Padre Island is a welcoming, unfussy beach destination that doesn't quite know just how beautiful it really is. It (and you!) are about to find out.

Getting to South Padre Island

South Padre Things to Do

Shannon Ratliff. Pier 19.

If you're too far to drive, you can reach SPI through Valley International Airport (VIA). Rent a car for the drive in; you won't regret that stretch of the Queen Isabella Causeway where the sea air begs for you to open the windows. I drove the six hours from Austin, leaving around 6:30 a.m. in the pouring rain and let me tell you, when the rain cleared just outside San Benito and the desert opened up, it was like chicken soup for the soul. Route 77 does that to you, and the family-owned Valley citrus farm stands make every mile even more worth it.

Stay at the new Courtyard Marriott near the end of Padre Boulevard and you could be the first person in that room! It opened January 2020 and has scenic views, a continental breakfast that opens to the beach past the pool, and more space than you thought you'd want but somehow deserve. Just go with how right it feels.

Start your morning on the water

You're on the Texas Gulf Coast, so grab that continental breakfast from the Marriott on their beach dining room and start your day under the sweet sun. It's time to enjoy the sea life and as an angler, I recommend heading out early for a fishing trip where you'll watch the sky and water mingle in the fog until it opens up into the clearest blue skies you've ever seen.

South Padre Things To Do

Shannon Ratliff. Osprey Cruises.

If your crew is the type to wet a line or two, head to Pier 19 for a fishing trip with Osprey Cruises where you'll drop weighted rigs off the side into Laguna Madre Bay with your whole family while you wait for whiting and sand trout. The view of the jetties from the water is a soothing morning scene that makes you feel that everything is all right in the world.

No matter if you're bayside or beachfront, keep your eyes open for bottlenose dolphin watch! Oh, and watch your bait on the open water.

South Padre Things To Do-3

If you're feeling bold, schedule a deep sea fishing trip into the Gulf of Mexico where the rigs get bigger and the fish do, too. Osprey also offers boat tours of the barrier island if fishing isn't necessarily your thing.

If you've wet your lines and caught your fair share of the tasty catch of the day, head back to Pier 19 where they'll clean your catch and teach you how to do it at home! Now for that bag of fresh fish...

South Padre Things To Do

Psst, non-anglers! Fishing isn't the only option for a lovely morning on South Padre Island, it just happened to be what we did! I heard the water sports like kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, kiteboarding, and parasailing are excellent options for all ages.

Cook your catch for lunch

In honor of Cook Your Catch Day on January 23, we embraced the holiday and took full advantage of our catch. The chefs at the iconic Painted Marlin Grille are ready and waiting for your catch of the day to prepare it six ways to Sunday, per your requests. While I do love the classic salt and pepper shore lunch next to a trout stream, there is no denying that the fried, blackened, and grilled fish at the Painted Marlin Grille is the next best thing.

Things To Do South Padre

Shannon Ratliff. The Painted Marlin Grille.

Grab a seat on the sunny bayside deck with a stack of appetizers that'll keep you full until your fresh fish is ready and margarita bowls the size of your face (yes, you need it). This is the perfect stop after a morning on the water.

South Padre Things To Do

Don't forget an order of Padre Pie, the combination key lime and mango that you will remember long after you leave. I know I'm still dreaming of that sweet, creamy last bite.

Find a little piece of South Padre to take home

Things To Do South Padre

Shannon Ratliff. Sisters Interiors.

If you're like me, you love to bring home a small piece of your travels with you. I stopped picking up shells awhile ago (those sea creatures still need them!) and instead went in favor of wooden kitchen magnets. You could say that I like small souvenirs from my getaways and let me tell y'all, despite that, I almost took all of Sisters Interiors on Padre Blvd. home with me.

The family-owned store specializes in interior design with a full working kitchen so you can really get a feel for your makeover. If you're visiting and not looking to renovate, rest assured that the MacKenzie-Childs hand-painted ceramics and tasty treats will convince you otherwise.

South Padre Things To Do

If shopping isn't your wheelhouse and you haven't hit the boardwalk or the beach yet, take the afternoon to do so. Catch a nap with the waves rocking you to sleep. If you're not there during Sandcastle Days, you can still take part in sandcastle building. There's just something about that South Padre sand that holds. If you love lighthouses, the Port Isabel Lighthouse is a must-see on the way before you cross over the Queen Isabella Causeway. It became a National Historic Place in 1976 during America's bicentennial year.

The best dinner you've ever had on vacation awaits

South Padre Things To Do

Shannon Ratliff. F&B SPI.

Whether or not you'll be joining the many nightlife festivities later, you still have to eat dinner after such an active day! We recommend Sea Ranch Restaurant or Food & Beverage SPI for two upscale dining experiences that make for the sweetest date night in the sea air.

South Padre Things to Do

Shannon Ratliff. Sea Ranch Restaurant.

At Sea Ranch Restaurant , the starters are especially delicious; if you love ceviche, order it as soon as you sit down. The blackened grouper was cooked beautifully and seasoned just enough to provide that depth of flavor off the grill without overwhelming the tender meat. Of course, the key lime pie is the perfect size for its richness.

Food & Beverage SPI, or F&B SPI , is where exceptional, inventive dishes meet the laidback island atmosphere of South Padre for a dinner you'll never forget. The dining space is light and airy with comfortable seating and incredible jellyfish-style light fixtures.

South Padre Things Do

For the food, which is really why you're here, the special menu we experienced was unlike anything I've seen before and watching the reveal of the salt-crusted fish was exceptional. From redfish to grouper, there was no better meal on South Padre than F&B.

South Padre Things To Do

F&B is a locally-sourced seafood restaurant with the best gourmet dessert menu in Texas.

South Padre Things To Do

You couldn't order anything wrong from this menu, and it is with true delight I tell you that they have the best chocolate chip cookies, possibly in America.

South Padre Things To Do

Y'all, these cookies are about three inches tall and came so warm from the oven, it was impossible not to dig in immediately.

Is it time to come back already?

South Padre Things To Do

Sure, if you know South Padre Island, you know the basics: Sea Turtle, Inc where they rescue and rehab injured sea turtles; the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center ; Port Isabel and Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark ; the Laguna Madre Nature Trail ; Sandcastle Days ; the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center ; and the incredible seafood. While we didn't experience these mainstays, there's a reason people still rave about Isla Blanca Park and Schlitterbahn Waterpark. Our Wide Open Eats trip highlighted a few off-the-beaten-path options for anglers and families alike.

South Padre Island isn't just a spring break mainstay; it's a family-friendly destination that offers everything from jet ski tours of the coastline to horseback riding. If you're looking for a tropical paradise with the old school charm of a beach town and food better than what you'll find in any major city, look no further in the United States than South Padre.

16 Top-Rated Things to Do on South Padre Island, TX

Written by Colin J. McMechan and Anietra Hamper Updated May 2, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Anietra Hamper spent time on the road in 2022 exploring destinations in Texas, including the popular vacation town of South Padre Island.

South Padre Island has some of the best beaches in Texas and some of the best beach resorts in the United States, so it's no wonder why nearly 4.5 million tourists a year flock to this part of the "Texas Riviera." While there is a lot to do here, there are just as many ways to relax once you cross the scenic 2.5-mile Queen Isabella Causeway onto the island.

Beach on South Padre Island

The 113-mile Padre Island is the second-longest island in the contiguous United States , but here's a travel advisory to SPI newbies: Port Mansfield Channel divides South Padre Island from the northern section known as the Padre Island National Seashore. Set GPS coordinates to "South Padre Island," and enjoy a smooth ride.

Part of the appeal of South Padre Island is that it works as a vacation spot for everyone, including families on summer vacation , winter snowbirds from the north, college students on spring break , couples, and solo travelers.

As amazing as unlimited sand and surf sound, our list of best attractions, places to visit, and things to do will convince you that life on South Padre Island is a beach with considerable benefits.

1. Drive on the Beach

2. enjoy birding and wildlife photography, 3. befriend wildlife at south padre island birding, nature center & alligator sanctuary, 4. get up to speed with turtles at sea turtle, inc., 5. find your beacon of hope at port isabel lighthouse, 6. zip along and saddle up at south padre island adventure park, 7. pamper yourself at sapphire spa, 8. cool off at beach park at isla blanca, 9. take a front-row seat for a spacex starship launch, 10. defy gravity at gravity park, 11. take sandcastle lessons, 12. go boarding at south padre island company, 13. dive below the surface with american diving, 14. cast into the surf or go deep sea fishing, 15. swing from gulf to golf at south padre island golf club, 16. play with your dog on the beach, map of things to do on south padre island, tx.

Driving the beach road

Your drive to South Padre Island will be pleasant, but driving your own car on the SPI beach is a thrill of a lifetime. Driving on the sand alongside crashing surf gives you a sense of freedom.

There are many points of legal access to bring your personal vehicle onto the beach from the road. To avoid getting stuck, and the cost of a tow truck to extract you from the sand, you may prefer to remain on the road instead of taking the beach route.

One of the first things to do once you cross Queen Isabella Causeway is drive north for 10 miles until the road dead-ends. For more than half of this straightaway, you'll experience the feeling of driving through sand dunes without ever leaving the pavement.

From here, you can continue on the beach by foot or bike for hours because SPI is 34 miles long. Winter Texans from the wintry north feel nostalgic when they see earthmovers clearing snow-white sand drifts from the shoulders of the road.

Dune travel on State Road 100

Want a different set of wheels (or hooves) to explore the beach? Rent a fat tire bike from one of many gear-rental shops or join a posse on horseback with a beach trip from Adventure Park.

Wherever you roam on the beach, here are a few tips:

  • Rules for driving on the beach are the same as rules on the road: Only licensed road vehicles are allowed (no OHVs or ATVs).
  • Observe speed limits (10 to 15 miles per hour).
  • If you plan to drive a long distance, make sure you go with a companion vehicle. If there's a breakdown, it could be a long walk back to civilization.
  • Watch out for sea turtles while driving on the beach, especially during nesting season between April and August.
  • Tempted by a sudden jolt of Mad Max madness to drive on the dunes? Don't! Dunes and the vegetation that grows on them serve as a natural barrier to protect SPI from seasonal hurricanes. Avoid the expense of a violation ticket, and stick to the road or beach.

After you drive along the beach, don't forget to get out and enjoy it! Prop up a chair and close your eyes as you listen to the surf and plan your next vacation move.

Some of the best beaches on South Padre Island are actually divided into sections from the two main beaches: the city beach and the county beach. Only the county portions of the beach allow driving, which is 29 miles of drivable beach on the northern portion of SPI beaches.

Redhead ducks take flight near Laguna Madre

Research and nature centers — along with a thriving flotilla of tour operators — provide ample opportunities for safe, comfortable, and exciting encounters with SPI's wildlife. Like you, nature and its creatures schedule their arrival on South Padre Island. If you're flexible, follow the annual migration of your favorite birds to SPI. Their digs are not far from where you'll be staying and dining out.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge across the water on the mainland is an immense nature preserve of almost 40,000 hectares. That's the size of almost seven Manhattan islands strung together. SPI's backyard is a favorite place for resident birds and their snowbird cousins, fish, mammals, amphibians, and countless insects.

SPI migrations at sunset

Whether you are a birder, wildlife photographer, paddler, or nature lover, you'll enjoy endless opportunities to appreciate the natural bounty that the Rio Grande Valley and SPI have in store for you: Herons, pelicans, Mexican eagles (aka crested caracara), and flamboyant roseate spoonbills are among the more than 300 species that frequent this area.

This is the only place north of the Mexican border where you can admire the impressive plumage of green jays in the wild.

Boardwalks and bird blinds at SPI Birding and Nature Center

Surrounded by water, island residents treasure and protect the ecological chain of diversity that attracts and feeds birds, reptiles, and marine mammals. Want to strengthen the chain and get a closer look?

Grab your binoculars, camera, and water bottle, and stop by South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary . Be sure to register for one of the highly-rated birding tours with a naturalist educator.

Home to a five-story viewing tower and more than half a mile of raised boardwalks and bird blinds, this center is your ticket to experience 50 acres of protected wetlands and the critters that live here. Not only will you see the vibrant colors and varying sizes of tropical birds, you can also check out alligators, tortoises, and other reptiles.

Brown pelicans sweep across the surf

Near the center is the popular mile-long public boardwalk loop, the Laguna Madre Nature Trail . Research, conservation, and public awareness are priorities here, including the protection of an endangered species you'll see in the butterfly garden: the monarch.

Sea Turtle, Inc . helps visitors like you turn these emotions into action with its year-round visitor and rehabilitation center for rescued sea turtles, most commonly the endangered Kemp's Ridley species. In addition to helping patients recover before release, it provides a home for resident turtles that will never be placed back into the wild.

One such resident is Allison — a turtle fitted with a prosthesis that enables her to swim with the assistance of human lifeguards and entertain visiting admirers from the comforts of her own tank. Her story may inspire you to return to Sea Turtle, Inc. as a valued member of its team of volunteers.

With a focus on conservation, rehabilitation, and public education, the center — located four miles north of the Queen Isabella Causeway — provides an informative self-guided waterfront experience with hourly "Turtle Talks."

Port Isabel Lighthouse

Where there is open water along a coastline populated with ocean-going vessels, you are sure to find a lighthouse that helps direct sailors on their journey. For this reason, lighthouses are often considered beacons of hope. Built as a navigational aid in 1852, the 72-foot-high Port Isabel Lighthouse has guided mariners of commercial and fishing boats into safe harbor.

Today, it stands as a symbol — not only of hope — but also of SPI's rich maritime history. This state historic site is the only lighthouse in Texas that is open to the public , along with its museum and reconstructed lighthouse keeper's cottage below the tower. Tours are self-guided so you will want to plan enough time to see everything and marvel at the view.

One of the best features to see is the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens that is on display at the top of the lighthouse. If you are afraid of heights and prefer to see its majesty from below, you will want to drive by at nighttime to see the lighthouse illuminated.

Horses on the South Padre Island beach

If your idea of leisure is being active, you will want to visit South Padre Island Adventure Park , where Park Road 100 ends and the fun begins. On 40 acres with access to the beach, the Island Adventure Park is a permanent home for rescue animals and tourists looking for a temporary escape from the rat race.

For one price, you can zipline non-stop for 45 minutes , ride horseback on the beach in an ocean wilderness for an hour, and hang out at the petting zoo. The same family-owned company operates the Island Fun Park in town, where you can get behind the wheel of a go-kart or play a round of mini-golf.

Summer fun at a water park

Children, youth, and the young at heart can easily spend most of the day soaking in active water play at Beach Park at Isla Blanca. In cooler weather, Beach Park has an indoor water park to extend summertime fun every month of the year.

What kind of water excitement appeals to you? Thrill seekers head with boogie boards to the Surf Rider. Atmospheric adventurers track the Storm Chaser. Swimmers — who like to go with the flow — float down the chute at Aqua Blanca.

Boca Chica launch facility

South of SPI is Starbase, the Boca Chica launch facility and landing pad for the SpaceX Starship . Experience the history of spaceflight in real-time by setting up your beach chair in the best location to capture rocket launches and landings. Take a drive out to Boca Chica Village to see the area that might become the futuristic community of Starbase.

Address: 54298, Boca Chica Blvd, Brownsville, Texas

Riding the Skycoaster

Look no further than Gravity Park for outside evening entertainment. While mini-golf and the arcade are fun, take control of a go-kart to pick up the pace. While a 60-foot Ferris wheel goes round and round, you can really get into the swing of things on the Skycoaster.

The Rocket is the tallest reverse-bungee in the world that flings you into the sky and lets gravity bring you back to Earth. While this ride won't take you as far as a SpaceX projectile, you are slung into orbit within seconds. Ready, set, go . . . SCREAM!!

Shoreside sandcastle fit for royalty

South Padre Island elevates the fun of making sandcastles in the sun to an art college level. Follow the self-guided hike along the South Padre Island Sandcastle Trail of 30 castles for inspiration, and learn how to make your own sandy masterpiece by taking lessons from a sandcastle pro.

Head over to Sandcastle Lessons , where you can learn and apprentice with a master. Lessons are three hours long and it is recommended that you take them on the first days of your vacation so that you can practice your new craft during your beach visits on SPI.

Fun on the water for man and his best friend

If laying on the beach and swimming bore you, it's time to jump on board: Surfboarding, boogie boarding, wakeboarding, sailboarding, kiteboarding, flyboarding, and stand up paddleboarding . A kayak or Jet Ski rental may also float your boat.

With so many options to get you on the water, you might need a guide to get started. In addition to gear rentals and surf shops, you'll find certified and experienced instructors to make your water adventures safe and satisfying.

If you've always longed to catch a wave on a surfboard, link up with an entire family of surfers: South Padre Surf Company on the southern tip of SPI in Isla Blanca Beach Park.

Green turtle in seagrass

Beauty might be only skin deep — unless you're a skin diver. If you dip below the surface of the waters surrounding South Padre Island, you enter a world that feels like it's yet to be discovered. Like the human body, most of what SPI has to offer is comprised of water.

The protective intertidal zone of the Laguna Madre is where sea life gets its start in water that is only three to six feet deep. Snorkeling in the shallows and seagrass allows you to see an abundance of fish such as catfish, spotted seatrout, black drum, and redfish.

You might also see hermit crabs and the occasional sea turtle. Contact a local tour operator for conditions on water visibility and a guide to bring you to the best places to visit for snorkeling.

If you are certified for deep sea adventures or want to pursue scuba diving certification, SPI-based American Diving can help you aboard and serve as your guide to offshore artificial reefs.

Surf fishing on South Padre Island

The hook for many visitors to South Padre Island is a day out in the sun with a fishing rod and a bucket of bait. Shore casting from the Jetties at Isla Blanca Park is sure to snag something for dinner. Queen Isabella State Fishing Pier next to the causeway is another favorite location for this popular pastime. SPI is one of the top areas in Texas for deep-sea fishing .

Not sure what to fish for or how? Need fishing gear? Visit the local tackle shops that can set you up with what you need, from great local insider advice about the best spots to try and what's biting, to bait and rods; many shops rent fishing rods.

Putter's delight

Aside from a few putts of mini-golf, there's no golf course on SPI. Within sight of the island, however, is South Padre Island Golf Club , on the other side of Laguna Madre in nearby Port Isabel . With almost 7,000 yards from the first tee to the 18 th hole, this course will help enhance your level of play with its sumptuous surroundings and onshore breezes.

Dog flies during fetch

Bailey, Bella, and Buddy are all welcome to join you on your SPI holiday. This community also offers top activities and adventures for your favorite pet. When you sign up for a stand up paddleboard or surf lesson, make sure you arrange lessons for your dog at the same time. Eh Brah SUP and South Padre Surf Company offer guides to teach your dog how to mount a board, get a grip, and hang 10 on the next wave.

17 Incredible Experiences In Scenic South Padre Island

when to visit south padre island

  • South Padre Island
  • United States

As far south as you can drive in Texas is a tropical paradise known as South Padre Island. The island is well-known for its beautiful white sandy beaches, calm weather, and excellent clear Gulf water. South Padre weather varies but rarely gets below 62 degrees. With mild winters and year-round fun, you can visit any time of the year to see and do it all.

The beautiful clean beaches are what bring most visitors down south, but there’s much more to do in South Padre than getting a tan and playing in the Gulf — though that sounds nice. If you’re looking to enjoy seashell hunting, fishing, sunbathing, jet-skiing, or sipping a drink on the beach while watching the fam play in the water, consider a visit to Texas’s only tropical paradise and explore these incredible South Padre experiences.

Things To Do In South Padre Island

Explore over 30 miles of tropical paradise while in South Padre. From the island’s world-class water experiences to activities on the bay and taking peaceful strolls along the beach, you can be as active or inactive as you would like during your South Padre Island vacation.

1. Dolphin Watch Tour

One of the most fascinating things to do when visiting a beach is seeing dolphins in their environment. There are many tours on the island but my favorite is The Original Dolphin Watch tour company. Climb aboard the double-decker Double Sunshine to see the most-loved creature of the sea.

Editor’s Note: Love dolphins? Consider our roundup of where to see dolphins in the wild , from Hawaii to Mozambique.

2. Deep-Sea Fishing Like A Pro

For some awesome fishing and time in the sun, Breakaway Cruises is your go-to for deep-sea fishing. And, if not everyone in your group is into fishing, they offer snorkeling and sea tours as well. This company does it all.

Horseback riding on South Padre Island in Texas.

3. Ride A Horse Along The Beach

Take in the ambiance of the beach on horseback. If you’ve ever wanted a chance to ride a horse through water, this is it. Island Adventure Park offers several time slots morning, noon, and night and some in between — now that’s an awesome way to view the scenery of the beach. Other activities at the park include a zipline course that you can zip along at your leisure and a petting barn with animals.

Pro Tip: Morning horseback rides are longer because the horses love cooler weather and their owners allow them to be taken out for lengthier rides.

4. Take A Sandcastle Lesson

Of course, you can build sandcastles along the beach. Many of us do that. But have you ever wanted to build one like you see in the movies or on ads? Well, now you can. At Sand Castle Lessons , an expert sandcastle builder will teach you and the family how to build a beautiful masterpiece out of the sand right on the beach. How cool is that! I had no idea there was such a thing! The only prerequisite is a smile and a positive attitude.

5. Birding, Nature, And Alligators Oh My!

At the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary that’s what you can see. Besides observing birds by eye, you’ll be able to do some adventuring on The Boardwalk, and that includes meeting Big Padra — a 12-foot alligator who’s been a resident of the sanctuary for years.

Best Restaurants In South Padre Island

Eating around South Padre Island is just what you expect — fresh seafood and plenty of it. But, some of the best restaurants on the island don’t include seafood on their menus. That said, I always look for a restaurant that serves up a mean blackened salmon at least once while I’m in an area that’s known for great seafood.

6. The Painted Marlin Grille

Located just off Padre Boulevard is The Painted Marlin Grille — an open-air restaurant to add to your itinerary, if only for the breeze from the bay and sunset views. Colorful decor and live entertainment on the weekends make the atmosphere fun and inviting. The restaurant offers a large menu with signature plates like Red Snapper, Sushi-Grade Yellowfin Tuna, and of course, the Catch of the Day. For non-seafood eaters, you’ll find a large selection of burgers, sandwiches, and po’boys. Be sure to try the Grilled Chicken Wrap, featuring a chipotle guava sauce. Vegetarian and vegan options available.

7. Ceviche Ceviche

Visitors can’t stop raving about the mouth-watering ceviche. You can’t beat fresh ceviche that’s prepared right before your eyes. If you like ceviche, Ceviche Ceviche of South Padre Island is a must. Moderately priced and the best ceviche on the island.

8. Seaside Grill

Looking for something a bit more casual? No need to change for dinner — come as you are, but you might want to slip on a coverup. Seaside Grill is located steps away from the beach, so you’ll have a great view, and there’s nothing quite like listening to the waves crashing while enjoying dinner. Definitely a different experience from the bayside of the island. Popular items on the menu include Fish Ceviche, Mexican Shrimp Cocktail, and Baja Fish Tacos.

Pro Tip: There is a small shower area for cleaning off sandy feet.

Gabriella’s Italian Grill and Pizzeria on South Padre Island.

Gabriellas Italian Grill and Pizzeria on Facebook

9. Gabriella’s Italian Grill And Pizzeria

Gabriella’s Italian Grill and Pizzeria is a chef-owned restaurant and is the place to go when you’ve had enough seafood (though you will find a few from-the-sea options here, too). Take-out is available, and don’t forget to try the Chocolate Souffle!

10. The Meatball Cafe

Another Italian and pizza place located on the boulevard that I want to include here because a friend of mine and her family ate there three times when they visited South Padre Island. They said The Meatball Cafe was so good that they wanted to experience it over and over again. The dish that the family ordered every time was the Italian Nachos appetizer and a dessert that was like donut holes drizzled with chocolate syrup and garnished with powdered sugar and whipped cream.

Pro Tip: When road tripping, it’s a popular thing to pack your own food, especially with large groups, and that’s fine, but when in South Padre Island, sampling the fish, if only once, is a must.

South Padre Island Beaches

Think of South Padre as one huge beach chopped up into sections because of the many beach accesses along the island. All beach accesses are open to the public. Of all the access points, I enthusiastically recommend the following experience…

11. Play All Day At Isla Blanca Park

This is a beachfront park like no other. Along the beach of the Gulf of Mexico is Isla Blanca Park — a park the likes of which you’ll never see anywhere else in Texas. Once inside the park, you’ll enjoy copious water recreation, beachfront pavilions, food concessions and restaurants, beach rentals, a walking trail, surf fishing, and much more. If you’re up to it, you can bring your own tent for camping at their many campsites. Restrooms and showers throughout the park and shaded picnic areas are available. You could spend your whole vacation in this park and never leave.

12. Beyond The Beach

South Padre offers plenty of activities to do that do not involve water, like shopping!

Different styles for different folks! From farmers markets to mom-and-pop shops to an inside mall to walk through to get out of the heat, where you’ll find beach essentials and beachwear. Be sure to pick up some local souvenirs to remind you of the fun you had on the island.

Best Hotels In South Padre Island

Depending on your preference and the size of your group, there are plenty of places to stay on South Padre Island that includes beach houses, condo rentals, hotel chains, vacation homes — you name it; it’s on the island.

13. Beach Houses On VRBO

If you’re going to the beach perhaps for the first time, you might want to spring for the all-out experience by renting a beach house right on the water. Vrbo has over a thousand beach house rentals with most being beachfront. And, from what I’ve noticed, they’re affordable!

14. Seabreeze Beach Resort

For a small, laid-back, low-key beachfront condo rental, Seabreeze Beach Resort is the place. The resort can accommodate almost any size group, and the minimum age to rent is 25 years old. Some condos are pet-friendly.

15. Courtyard By Marriott South Padre Island

If you’re looking for a hotel chain with excellent reviews, the Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island is one to consider. With the beach in front and a beautiful swimming pool in the back, plus a restaurant, fitness center, free Wi-Fi, and a bar, you’ll no doubt please everyone in your party. I do like getting hotel points when I go on vacation. Courtyards have never disappointed us.

16. Adult-Only Hotel

Upper Deck Hotel and Bar is an affordable adult-only hotel located walking distance from the beach. No one under 18 is allowed on property.

17. All-Inclusive Options

Wanting to enjoy it all? An all-inclusive vacation might be the way to go, especially if you want to know exactly how much you’ll be spending on accommodations and food. Through EnjoySPI , you can find places that include it all for one price.

Several locals told me that the beaches of South Padre Island never get old. The beaches are always clean, and if nothing else, they say to grab a lounge chair so you can sit and watch the sea roll in as the sun goes down. That’s what makes their whole day. 21 Things to do on South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is a beautiful resort town off coastal South Texas . My parents actually spent a decade as Snowbirds making their way to South Padre to escape the winters from Canada. The town sits on a massive barrier island and is joined to the mainland by Queen Isabella Causeway.

With theme parks and watersports for adventure and amazing natural habitats including nesting grounds for sea turtles and plenty of wildlife, South Padre Island is the perfect balance between spending time in nature and having a fun beach holiday. There are so many South Padre Island attractions – both natural and manmade.

Best things to do on south Padre Island TX Map

This guide will cover all the best things to do on South Padre Island. You’ll have plenty of itinerary inspiration, from exploring Laguna Madre to spending a day at Gravity Park.

1. Enjoy a Beach Day at Isla Blanca Beach

things to do on south padre island Texas isla blanca

What would a beach holiday be without a beach day? Make sure to pencil in at least one day to enjoy a real beach day at Isla Blanca Beach. This is definitely one of the busiest spots and is a place you don’t want to miss when you are looking for things to do on South Padre Island. Here, you can stick to the classics like finding sea shells or sunbathing or, if you are looking for something more active, rent equipment from one of the many surf shops and go surfing or boogie boarding. If you are a real adrenaline junkie, you can even go parasailing or jet skiing.

You can book this parasailing excursion in advance. No experience is needed to take in the sweeping views of the island. You can also book a jet ski rental to explore Laguna Madre independently. Make sure to keep an eye out for dolphins.

Isla Blanca Beach is stunning, with vast white sands and plenty of room to accommodate all the visitors that it inevitably attracts. You are flanked by the marina and backed by a beautiful boardwalk with waterfront pavilions scattered along the way. The beach is just a short walk from the town center and all its amenities.

2. South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center

things to do on south padre island tx dolphin eco tour

Dolphins deserve to live a life free from captivity. And this is precisely the message that the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center pioneers. The center is just a short drive from South Padre Island – located in Port Isabel on the other side of the Queen Isabella Causeway.

The center runs daily ethical dolphin cruises, taking visitors out to spot wild bottlenose dolphins on a special dolphin tour. These dolphin tours are unlike your standard commercial tourist traps and carry just six or fewer tourists at a time. You’ll experience an ethical dolphin cruise; quiet, respectful, and knowledgeable about the marine animals it aims to spot.

Tours aren’t the only thing the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center does. The center also has a touch tank and marine exhibits to educate visitors on marine conservation. All the resident animals are rescues that are being rehabilitated or deemed unsuitable to be released back into the wild. You can learn more about ongoing coastal concerns and how you can do your bit to help out.

Book this 90 minute dolphin watch excursion for a cruise into the Gulf of Mexico to spot Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll also see seabirds, The US Coast Guard Station, and the Space X location.

3. South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

things to do on south padre island tx bird and nature center

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is another non-profit gem on South Padre Island. The center has over 3,300 feet of boardwalks that wind around the bay, an alligator sanctuary, an observation tower, five bird blinds, and a butterfly garden. You’ll spot birds, gators, butterflies, and more. And you can opt for a guided tour or explore alone – with no noise except from the animals around you.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is perfect if you want to spend half a day surrounded by nature. If you liked the sound of the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, it offers a similar experience, just longer and with more varied attractions along the way.

If you want to see Laguna Madre from the water, a good option is a jet ski rental. You can ride alone or with another person to see the coastline from a different point of view. You can check availability and prices here.

An important part of the center is the Butterfly Garden, which is a great place to spot butterflies in the wild. The park is small but full of pollinator-friendly plants – perfect for encouraging butterflies and other beautiful wildlife. The Monarch Butterfly was placed on the Endangered Species List, and the center is working to restore Monarch Butterfly Habitat.

4. South Padre Island Adventure Park

what to do on south padre island tx adventure park

South Padre Island Adventure Park is a dreamy attraction for a day of activities. The park sits on forty acres of land, including a vast, privately owned beach. You can pick whatever activity piques your interest, from horseback riding on the beach to ziplining around a zipline circuit. We recommend horseback riding, as if you get lucky, you might spot bottlenose dolphins or other marine life while cantering along the water’s edge.

South Padre Island Adventure Park also has a petting barn. In this safe, knowledgeable environment, families can introduce young children to animals. The park is a brilliant day out for families and lone adults alike.

5. Take a Sand Castle lesson

what to do on south padre island tx sandcastle lesson

One of the most unique things to do on South Padre Island is to take a sand castle lesson. Chances are, building sand castles was a skill you either taught yourself or your parents showed you with a bucket and spade. However, at South Padre Island, you can take your first official lesson as professional sand sculptors run sand castle lessons along the beach. You won’t be flipping buckets upside down the whole time to make standard castles. You’ll be creating artwork.

The lessons run between one and three hours, and the result is guaranteed to be a masterpiece. You’ll build a stunning castle – often so big that you’ll have to stand on your tiptoes to finish the final roofing details. The details are impressive, with stairways that would impress Disney and realistic textures carved into the walls and roof. Depending on your requirements, you can book group, family, and private lessons.

This Sandcastling Experience will teach you to build a sandcastle like a pro. It includes all the tools to create beautiful sandcastles that can be used throughout your stay. Read more here.

6. See The Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the US

what to do on south padre island tx largest sandcastle in us

You might make your own sandcastle or even take a sandcastle-building lesson, but you also need to visit the Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the US. Built in 2013, it took 150 tons of river sand to build. Since then, it has attracted millions of tourists and stands as a testament to South Padre Island’s sandcastle culture. Update: Unfortunately, the City of South Padre Island removed this sandcastle in 2023. But keep your eyes open, as it just might be rebuilt.

There are also many smaller pieces of sand art nearby, so allow at least an hour to look around. If you visit during a holiday, you can usually find some themed artwork, which is always good fun. Even better, you just pay a donation to visit, keeping costs nice and low.

7. Laguna Madre Nature Trail

south padre island things to do laguna madre nature trail

Laguna Madre Nature Trail is South Padre Island’s most scenic and diverse walk. The boardwalk is just 1,500 feet long and spans four acres of the Laguna Madre Wetlands. However, you’ll be surrounded by nature – from fiddlewood berries to pelicans and falcons. It is one of the top bird-watching sites on the island and is a perfect nature walk on a sunny day.

Laguna Madre Nature trail is open 24 hours a day and free to enter. The natural wildlife reserve is a peaceful addition to any South Padre Island itinerary. Allow around an hour to enjoy the trail to its fullest.

8. Sea Turtle Inc.

south padre island things to do sea turtle inc

Who doesn’t love sea turtles? Sea Turtle Inc. is a haven for injured sea turtles and rehabilitates and releases rescued sea turtles 365 days a year. Visiting Sea Turtle Inc. is one of the most wholesome ways to spend a couple of hours – especially since the charity is entirely funded by visitors and donations.

You can take a self-guided tour around the different pools, stopping to look at each rescued sea turtle. If you haven’t seen a sea turtle before, this is a hugely memorable experience. It also helps you to comprehend the number of turtles in need, and you can view the different treatments and techniques used to heal the creatures – including metal braces and bandaging.

Make sure to stop by the gift shop after, as sales massively help the charity continue its fantastic work. You can also check the schedule to attend one of the hourly presentations or daily sea turtle feeding sessions. Read more: 10 Ways to Help Save the Oceans – World Oceans Day and Beyond

9. South Padre Sand Dunes

south padre tx things to do sand dunes

South Padre Sand Dunes are one of the best spots on the island. The dunes sit on the beachfront, located at the north end of Padre Boulevard. While the dunes are protected (meaning no driving or sand sports), you can walk through them. Just be mindful of disrupting the dunes as little as possible.

There is something special about being surrounded by sand dunes, and you should bring your camera to capture the moment. You’ll be surrounded by miles of sandy hills and ridges -a beautiful experience, to say the least.

10. Port Isabel Lighthouse

things to do south padre island texas port isabel lighthouse

Port Isabel Lighthouse is a stunning landmark and state historic site. It is the only remaining lighthouse in Texas still open to the public, so it is considered a valuable part of the state’s coastal history. It is a fantastic attraction to visit for a bit of maritime history.

Port Isabel Lighthouse has 75 stairs, which you can tackle to reach the top for glorious views. Walking up the spiral stairs is mildly vertigo-inducing but indeed an experience. Often, immersive history is easier to engage with, and the lighthouse offers a memorable history lesson.

Tickets can be purchased from the Keeper’s Cottage Visitor Center. Reaching Port Isabel Lighthouse from South Padre Island is also extremely easy, as you just cross the Queen Isabella Highway.

11. Gravity Park

Ready for a day at an amusement park? Gravity Park is a fun evening out. The amusement park is packed with rides and activities, including go-karts, mini-golf, and a reverse bungee. Having opened in 1993, it has years of experience under its belt. It is a popular attraction amongst tourists and locals alike.

Entrance to Gravity Park is free, and tickets for rides are bought on a ride-by-ride basis. This is perfect for adults taking children into the park, as admission tickets can quickly add up to otherwise make an expensive day out. Adults will love the park, too, and the giant swing and reverse bungee are exciting challenges for testing your nerves.

12. Drive the Queen Isabella Causeway

queen isabella causeway south padre tx

This may sound a strange addition to your itinerary but driving the Queen Isabella Causeway is somewhat of a momentous thing to do on South Padre Island. It is one of the longest bridges in Texas and has beautiful water views. You can drive over the bridge yourself or even book a taxi to relax and take in the views.

Isabella Causeway was also sadly the site of tragedy in 2001 when an older version of the bridge collapsed. The newly constructed bridge doubles up as a memorial for the tragedy. It is a humbling drive to pay your respects.

As the causeway is the most popular way to reach South Padre Island, you’ll likely get the chance to cross. It cuts over Laguna Madre, joining Port Isabel with South Padre Island. It is also ideally combined with a visit to Port Isabel Lighthouse. If you need to rent a car for a day, compare prices for rentals at RentalCars.com

13. Fish on the Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier

pirates landing pier south padre Island texas

Sure, you can embark on a deep-sea fishing excursion (more on that later), but why not try your hand at traditional fishing, too? Head to South Padre’s old fishing pier for a relaxing afternoon. You can often catch tarpon, mangrove snapper, and sand trout, so sit tight and wait for that exciting first bite.

Pirate’s Landing is the longest pier in Texas and has everything you need – from a tackle and bait shop to a toilet block. The pier is located just across the causeway in Port Isabel. You’ll be casting off into Laguna Madre Bay, which has some of the best facilities just steps away.

14. Catch the fireworks

fireworks south padre Island texas

Fireworks are exciting; there’s no denying it. And it just so happens that South Padre has fireworks displays every week for most of the year. Firework displays quickly become one of the favorite South Padre Island attractions in summer. At around 9 pm most nights, you can head out to be entertained by loud noise and bright colors, all for the grand cost of zero dollars. It is easy to see why visiting a firework display has become one of the best things to do on South Padre Island.

Throughout summer, you can catch fireworks on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. On Tuesdays, the display is at Louie’s Backyard. While on Thursdays, the display is held at Isla Grand Beach Resort. Then, on Fridays and Saturdays, you can catch fireworks at The Pier behind the Courtyard by Marriott.

Of course, you can expect extra special fireworks if you visit South Padre Island on the 4th of July or Labor Day. These displays are let loose, especially over Laguna Madre Bay – a spectacle you definitely shouldn’t miss.

15. Visit the South Padre Island Farmer’s Market

south padre Island texas farmers market vegetables

Nothing quite says relaxation like a trip to a farmer’s market. South Padre Island Farmer’s Market runs every Sunday until mid-afternoon, selling local produce and handmade goods. A stroll through the stalls on a sunny Sunday midday is a heavenly thing to do on South Padre Island. It is also easily slotted into a busy itinerary, taking around 20 minutes to walk around.

You could pick up fresh veggies, sweet treats, or a handmade souvenir. You never quite know what you will find, which is all part of the fun.

16. Beach Park at Isla Blanca

A day at the waterpark is brilliant for any tourist. And what better way to beat the hot South Padre weather? You can cool down and get your adrenaline pumping all at the same time.

The beach park has an inland surf machine, a river system, and four different rollercoasters. There are even swim-up bars for the adults to indulge at. You can be zipping along water rides and grabbing poolside refreshments.

One thing to remember is that the Beach Park at Isla Blanca closes during the off-season. This is a definite summer or springtime attraction – ideal for those hot days when you can’t face any real sightseeing.

17. Take a dinner cruise

sunset cruise south padre Island texas

Boat tours are always a good idea, especially since South Padre Island waters are so tranquil and beautiful. However, splashing out on a dinner cruise is a great way to make a standard boat tour even better. Many companies offer dinner cruises around South Padre, but we’d recommend Southern Wave Sailing Charters.

Southern Wave Sailing Charters have luxury catamarans that embark at sunset to whisk tourists out for a dinner cruise they’ll remember. You can enjoy good food, drink, music, and company as you sail. Perhaps you’ll even spot bottlenose dolphins if you are lucky.

This highly rated private sunset cruise takes you out on a catamaran to enjoy beautiful views of the Texas Gulf Coast. It’s a private yacht charter for up to six passengers that can be customized to your preferences.

18. South Padre Island National Seashore

south padre Island texas sand dunes

South Padre Island National Seashore is located north of South Padre Island’s town center. You’ll need to access it by looping back across the mainland. The park protects 66 miles of stunning coastline and houses an estimated 380 bird species. The National Seashore also houses some human history, with Spanish shipwrecks from 1554.

Apart from the odd shipwreck and park sign, you can enjoy miles of undeveloped beaches and hikes. National Seashore is a remote paradise in Texas and the longest stretch of an undeveloped barrier island in the world.

While it might require a little extra effort to get there, it is easily one of the best day trips on South Padre Island. The drive takes around three hours one way, and you’ll need to rent a car to visit. If you are traveling as a group and can rotate drivers, this journey will be a breeze. You drive up to Corpus Christi and then over the John F. Kennedy Memorial Causeway to reach the National Seashore.

19. Port Isabel Historical Museum

Port Isabel Historical Museum is one of South Padre Island’s most educational attractions. With fascinating exhibits and artifacts, the museum whisks visitors back to the Mexican-American War. The Museum also delves into the local area’s history, covering Laguna Madre’s experience of the war and its early maritime beginnings. Laguna Madre’s history has been effectively condensed onto a giant timeline—so you can literally walk through the ages.

Whether you are a history enthusiast or just want to learn more about a lesser-taught piece of history, visiting this museum is a great idea. It is also one of the best indoor activities in the area, so keep it in mind on a rainy day.

20. Get on the Water

fishing at south padre Island tx

If you are an avid fisherman, deep sea fishing is an enormously alluring bucket list-worthy experience. Even those who know nothing about fishing will have seen pictures of people posing with giant fish they’ve caught at sea. To get yourself off the piers and beaches and out into the ocean, consider one of South Padre’s deep sea fishing trips.

Osprey Cruises are a popular option and operate all-year-round tours. This flexibility is fantastic for those visiting out-of-season. You’ll depart at 7:30 am for a full eight hours on the water. Osprey Cruises also provides all bait and tackle, keeping your day bag nice and light.

You can book a small half -day fishing trip with Viator in advance to fish for trout, sheepshead, and more. A valid Texas Saltwater Fishing License is required for this excursion.

Even if you decide that deep sea fishing isn’t for you, be that due to limited time or budget, there are plenty of other fishing trips. Crystal Flats Guide Service offers excellent bay fishing. Crystal Flats Guide Service doesn’t take you right out to sea. And instead, you’ll fish in particular inshore areas preferred by locals. It is a much smoother, shorter experience, so consider it as an alternative if you are relatively new to fishing. Plus many people fish right off the beach.

21. Where to Eat on South Padre Island

seafood south padre Island texas

Dine at Blackbeard’s

You can’t visit the seaside without trying seafood, and Blackbeard’s is the best spot on South Padre Island. The casual eatery might look unassuming, but don’t be fooled; it has been serving delicious seafood since 1978 and has quite the cult following.

The ginger teriyaki tuna steak is a popular choice on the menu. You can tuck in knowing that your food is fresh and locally caught. Blackbeard’s also has a great burger menu if you change your mind about seafood, including a select few vegetarian options. Casual, friendly, and full of tasty food, dining at Blackbeard’s is one of the most fun things to do on South Padre Island.

Sea Ranch is another recommendation for our foodies. Dining at the restaurant is one of the best things to do on South Padre Island if you have a passion for seafood and high-quality cuisine. You could be tucking into king crab legs or enjoying succulent Gulf Coast shrimp. The selection of seafood is varied and as fresh as possible.

Sea Ranch is located right on the harbor and edge of Laguna Madre Bay. It has never been so easy to visualize your food’s ocean-to-plate journey.

How to Plan Your Perfect Trip to Padre Island National Seashore

Looking to spend a fun-filled day at the beach with family and friends – or maybe score some alone time listening to the rhythm of splashing waves and bird calls? If you love sun, sand, and solitude, Padre Island National Seashore is a great place to spend a day – or a week or two – enjoying the southern Texas coast. Located along the Gulf of Mexico, this park protects nearly 70 miles of beautiful white sand beaches and important coastal ecosystems. Read on to find out why you should make Padre Island your next vacation destination, plus learn some tips for planning your beach adventure.

Padre Island National Seashore – The World’s Longest Barrier Island

At 113 miles long, Padre Island is the world’s longest barrier island. While South Padre Island is known for its vibrant resort community, North Padre Island is known for its quiet beauty and miles of white sand beaches. Padre Island National Seashore , located on North Padre Island, protects 66 miles of beaches, as well as one of the last coastal prairie grasslands in the United States.

Padre Island National Seashore

The park is important to many Indigenous peoples. It is located on the homelands of, or is culturally important to, the Karankawa Kadla, the Lipan Apache, the Comanche, the Tonkawa, and the Pamaque. Spanish settlers colonized the area many years after the first Indigenous peoples inhabited it, and the remains of shipwrecks still wash up on shore from time to time.

Today, the national seashore is known as a family-friendly vacation and outdoor destination. The park’s remoteness and lack of cell service make it a great place to escape from the modern world and enjoy the surf and sunshine.

Padre Island National Seashore Highlights

Padre Island National Seashore is a great place to visit year round, with temperatures ranging from 50 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees during the summer time. In addition to being a great place to cool off during the hotter months, you may also want to plan your trip to Padre Island during this time to watch a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle release.

Top Spots in the Park

In addition to enjoying the miles of beaches, you’ll want to check out these park spots at Padre Island National Seashore:

  • Malaquite Beach: Accessible via the Malaquite Visitor Center, this 4.5-mile long beach is closed to motorized vehicles. This makes a great place for families to enjoy the water.
  • Grasslands Nature Trail: This short paved loop trail is an easy walk through one of the last coastal prairie grasslands in the United States. It also includes interpretive signage so you can learn more about this unique ecosystem.
  • Bird Island Basin: This campground provides boat and swimming access to the Laguna Madre, one of the best areas in the park to enjoy the water and watch birds.

Tricolored herons are a common wading bird in south Texas.

Biodiversity and a Premium Birding Destination

The park is known for its biodiversity. Inside the park you’ll find the Laguna Madre, one of six hypersaline lagoons in the world. The water in the Laguna Madre is much saltier than the nearby ocean, which creates a unique environment for many different species of wildlife. Padre Island is located on the Central Flyway bird migration route, and over 300 species of birds visit the seashore each year.

Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle Hatchling Releases

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the smallest sea turtles in the world, and they are also critically endangered. These turtles return to the same beaches to nest every year. Padre Island National Seashore staff puts great effort into protecting and monitoring the turtle nests. Conservation groups also work to protect the hatchlings and release them en masse into the wild, to give the turtles the greatest chance of survival.

If you visit Padre Island National Seashore from mid-June to August, you may have the opportunity to see a hatchling release . These events often occur at Malaquite Beach in front of the visitor center. In addition to watching thousands of sea turtle hatchlings make their way to the ocean for the first time, you also may have the opportunity to take pictures of the baby turtles. Be sure to contact the park ahead of time to learn when and how to view a sea turtle release.

when to visit south padre island

It is important to note that Padre Island National Seashore lacks cell service and gas stations, and has a limited number of areas to purchase food and beverages. In order to make the most of your trip, stock up on any supplies you may need in Corpus Christi.

Make a Stop in the City: Corpus Christi, Texas

Corpus Christi, Texas , is a waterfront city known for its beaches, seafood, and shopping.

It also has a variety of attractions including the Texas State Aquarium, one of the largest in the United States, and the Selena Memorial, dedicated to beloved Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla. History lovers may want to pay a visit to the USS Lexington. There’s plenty to do in this coastal town that won’t break the bank , so you might want to add it to your national park trip itinerary.

It’s best to shop for groceries, purchase camping supplies such as firewood, and buy any other items that you may need in this gateway city. You can then access Padre Island National Seashore by taking TX 358E to Park Road 22.

Know Before You Go

Keep the following in mind when planning your visit to Padre Island National Seashore so that you can make the most of your experience while there.

Padre Island National Seashore

  • This park is remote . Cell service is either nonexistent or unreliable throughout the entire park. There are also no gas, lodging (besides camping), laundry, dining, groceries, post offices, fishing licenses, or medical facilities available within park boundaries. Purchase all the supplies you will need ahead of time, and have a plan for medical emergencies.
  • Navigating can be a challenge. The National Park Service recommends that you input the specific GPS coordinates into your navigation device to find the visitor’s center, as opposed to relying on Waze or Google Maps. This is because GPS systems often place the visitor center several miles away from where it actually is. You can access this information here .

Four colorful windsurfers on the ocean at Padre Island National Seashore

  • You cannot drive to South Padre Island from the National Seashore . This is because the North and South islands are separated by a waterway. In order to reach the South Island, you must drive back inland and then make the three to four hour journey to South Padre via the highway.
  • Practicing water safety is a must . Stop by the visitor center to get information about tides, including rip tides. There are no lifeguards on duty. Packing a first aid kit is recommended as there may be stinging animals, such as jellyfish, on the beach.
  • Respect the wildlife . Do not touch wildlife. You can contact park staff via a hotline if you see an animal in distress.

It’s also always a good idea to pack what you need to be prepared—and make sure that you have everything you need to create great memories of your trip.

Choose Your Own Way To Unwind On South Padre Island

A t the southern tip of Texas, you’ll find South Padre Island, a barrier island that Texans and non-Texans alike flock to year-round for its beaches, birding, outdoor adventure and small-town coastal charm.

Over 34 miles of beach and more than 300 days of sunshine a year make South Padre a haven for nature lovers, who take to the surf for kayaking, swimming, kitesurfing, paddleboarding and, of course, lazy beach days in the sand.

Spend the afternoon posted up by the water with a fish taco in hand or peruse art galleries and souvenir shops for shells and coastal decor. Visit one of the area’s nature centers for wildlife education and encounters, and toast to a great getaway with an evening cocktail while watching boats drift by.

In South Padre, there’s no need to rush your way through the day — you’re on (barrier) island time.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

“adopt” a sea turtle.

Sea Turtle, Inc.

6617 Padre Blvd.

(956) 761-4511

At Sea Turtle Inc. , see rescued sea turtles and the clinic for injured sea turtles that are being rehabilitated. Learn about the work done on the island to protect and save sea turtles, especially Texas’ critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. The facility is a home for sea turtles who need a bit of extra care and is a great place to learn about sea turtle etiquette in case you spot one on the beach. You can also “adopt” a sea turtle, a sea turtle nest or a hatchling, with funds going to support beach patrols, nest conservation, food and medical care.

Chase Butterflies

South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center, and Alligator Sanctuary

6801 Padre Blvd.

956-761-6801

On 50 acres of wetlands, the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary is a great attraction for families and solo travelers alike — it’s where educational opportunities and nature collide. Walk along 3,300-plus feet of boardwalk or stop at one of five bird blinds to see diverse flora and fauna, including roseate spoonbills, egrets, sandpipers, ruby-throated hummingbirds, warblers and ospreys. There’s also a gator pond and daily gator talks, a five-story observation tower, a tortoise exhibit and a butterfly garden.

Watch Dolphins

Breakaway Cruises

33384 State Park Road 100

956.761.2212

Take to the Laguna Madre and see if you can spot dolphins porpoising from the water with a Breakaway Cruises dolphin-watching tour. There is a particular pod of dolphins near South Padre Island, and they often frolic together among the waves, sharing fish for meals and singing to each other in their own language.

See Rockets

Boca Chica Beach

52448-54298 Boca Chica Blvd

Out past the jetties, you’ll see SpaceX, the rocket testing facility owned by Elon Musk. You can drive out to SpaceX on Boca Chica Beach and see the rocket launchers, but know that there are no tours, attractions or facilities for the public at SpaceX. After you’ve got your SpaceX fix, spend some time at Boca Chica Beach, but note there are no facilities on the beach either.

Various locations throughout the island

South Padre has a thriving arts scene, with numerous local artists creating works in a variety of mediums. Stop by the Art Business Incubator to see resident artists at work or attend a First Friday Art Walk, art workshop, or painting class. There are also numerous art galleries, including Quinn Gallery and The Art Lounge .

WHAT TO EAT

For breakfast or lunch, pop in to Josephine’s Kitchen for southern and Tex-Mex favorites, like chicken and waffles, chilaquiles and biscuits and gravy.

At The Palms resort, Cafe on the Beach is a great spot for a peaceful meal near the beach, as the restaurant has direct beach access. Take a winding stroll past dense greenery, and you’ll reach a less-populated stretch of beach where you can take in the tranquility before walking back to dine on pancakes, burgers and fried seafood baskets.

For a fancy coffee and breakfast that is totally Instagrammable, Yummies Bistro is an absolute must, as their coffees come topped with beautiful coffee art and designs, plus great flavor add-ons like coconut syrup, white chocolate macadamia, Mexican chocolate and Irish cream.

Dockside at the marina, Mahi Nic is a casual eatery with some of the best fish tacos you’ll find on the island. Try the mahi fish tacos with blackened mahi, queso fresco, pico de gallo and sour cream on corn tortillas. They’re served with questionably large hand-cut fries, which could arguably be a meal themselves. They also serve fish sandwiches, dressed-up hot dogs, nachos and more.

For a gorgeous ocean view and killer cocktails, have dinner at Viva , where you can have the kitchen cook your catch or enjoy such dishes as wild-caught flounder, Texas redfish, gulf shrimp, burgers and cold bar items like tuna tartare and ceviche.

At Nautico Island Grill , fresh salads, sandwiches, seafood, burgers, Tex-Mex and pasta fill the menu, and a patio with umbrella-shaded tables is a great place to unwind with a signature frozen mocktail or cocktail.

WHERE TO STAY

Isla Grand Beach Resort is a full-service resort right on the beach with two swimming pools, hot tubs, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, a nightclub, a coffee shop and live entertainment (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Multiple on-site eateries offer everything from poolside snacks to steaks and seafood dishes.

Holiday Inn Resort South Padre Island-Beach Front is another full-service resort on the beach with three pools, on-site dining and children’s activities.

Margaritaville Beach Resort South Padre Island is beachfront and full-service as well, with two restaurants, a coffee shop, a spa and coastal-themed rooms with ocean views.
