41 Must-Do Activities Aboard Royal Caribbean Ships

When it comes to things to do on a cruise ship, Royal Caribbean is arguably the leader in the industry. Whether you’re wanting something relaxing (spa day, anyone?) or something more active (waterslides, rock climbing, and more), the cruise line offers more to do than anyone out there.

Odyssey and Freedom of the Seas docked in CocoCay

If you’re planning to take a cruise on Royal Caribbean, you should know that it offers something for everyone – from kids to teens to active adults and even grandparents. No one of any age can feel bored with so many activities to choose from, whatever your taste in fun.

If you’re new to cruising, or haven’t sailed with Royal Caribbean yet, here’s a preview of the many things you can enjoy while sailing with this cruise line.

One thing to note is that the list below represents the things you can do across the cruise line. Unfortunately, not all the features listed are available on every Royal Caribbean ship . Don’t worry, however. You can ask your travel agent or call the cruise line to see which ships offer the features you want. (If you want the most options, then we suggest sailing the newest and largest ships in the fleet.)

We’ve broken down this list into broad groups to help you decide in advance which of the many cruise experiences you absolutely don’t want to miss…

Thrills: Get Your Adrenaline Pumping!

There’s no better way to kick off your cruise than with some high-energy fun. You can skydive, zipline, rock climb, soar above the ship, ride standing waves… and more. What other type of travel offers so many options?

Royal Caribbean waterslide and Flowrider

Plunge down a waterslide If you can’t remember the last time you felt exhilarated, you owe it to yourself to enjoy one of Royal Caribbean’s waterslides. They are a fun way to get wet while on the ship while also getting a shot of adrenaline. You’ll find them across the fleet, with larger ships having more options.

Want to stay dry? Check out the Ultimate Abyss on the cruise line’s largest Oasis-class ships. While not a waterslide, it still takes you plunging down ten stories, making it the tallest slide at sea.

Skydive without an airplane If you’re attracted by the adrenaline rush of skydiving, but not sure if you want to jump out of an airplane, try RipCord by iFly on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships. This skydiving simulator lets you experience the excitement of defying gravity, safely floating on air within a wind tunnel on the deck of your ship. Don’t worry, you’ll have an instructor with you the entire time. There is a charge for this activity, however.

Go rock climbing Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, you can strap in and go vertical – as high as 40 feet above deck. This complimentary activity will give you bragging rights when you tell your friends that your vacation had you climbing the wall in the middle of the ocean. While kids will love it, there’s no rule that adults can’t climb too!

cruise activities list

Polish your surfing skills on Flowrider Royal Caribbean’s popular surfing simulator allows guests to experience what it’s like to ride a wave… without having to plunge into the ocean. You simply “surf” on a thin layer of fast-moving water. The Flowrider supports both traditional surfing and boogie board style surfing. Surfing on a Flowrider is complimentary with your fare. For an additional fee, you can also book private surfing lessons. Just keep in mind that the lines can be long during prime time in the middle of a day at sea.

Zipline across the ship Imagine flying across the ship, suspended from a zipline ten decks up. You can do it on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels such as Harmony of the Seas. Strap in and ride across the decks below. It’s a short ride, but also an unforgettable experience you can’t replicate anywhere else.

Ride the North Star If you’re sailing aboard one of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, make sure you experience this unique attraction. The North Star observation pod extends upwards and even over the side of the ship so passengers can take in a 360-degree view from 300 feet in the air. If you’re scared of heights, then it’s not for you. If you’re ok with being up over the ship, it provides a great view (and thrill).

Fun: Sing, Shop, Skate – and More!

Being on a cruise means feeling carefree. Sing your heart out, shop ‘til you drop, glide across the ice.

Indulge in some retail therapy Royal Caribbean’s Royal Promenades are one of the things fans love about this cruise line. Aboard a Royal Caribbean vessel, you’ll find a wide range of shopping options here, including souvenirs, fine jewelry, fashion, luxury watches, liquor, and beauty items. No need to bring cash. You can put everything on your room keycard and pay at the end of the trip.

Join in a piano sing-along The Schooner Bar, one of the Royal Caribbean signature venues found on every ship, offers a relaxed, nautical vibe along with a piano. Enjoy your favorite beverage as you enjoy the piano music playing well-known songs that are universally loved.

Sing your heart out in karaoke One of the nice things about a cruise is that you don’t have to worry about embarrassing yourself. After all, once the cruise is over you won’t likely see these people again. So let your talent shine onstage. Karaoke is available at different spots, such as Spotlight Karaoke on Oasis of the Seas. Grab a mic and show off your vocal chops, singing one of your favorite hit songs.

Twirl and glide across the ice One of the many ways Royal Caribbean offers passengers more than they is expect is by doing things that seem impossible on a cruise ship. In this case, how about a shipboard ice-skating rink? Everyone from kids to grownups can strap on a pair of skates and glide (or wobble) across the ice. There are also ice shows put on by the entertainment staff. Be sure to bring long pants.

Royal Caribbean casino

Try your luck in the casino Gambling on the cruise ship is one of the most popular activities. All your favorite games are available (slots, craps, roulette, blackjack, etc.), plus some that you may not be used to seeing in a casino like coin pusher machines and “skill crane” type machines that can win you money.

Casinos are open normally when the ship is sailing from port to port, and can get pretty busy in the evenings.

Explore the art around the ship One unique thing about Royal Caribbean is that the cruise line loves to place art around the ship. Every stairwell that you travel will have art pieces. There’s also art lining the walls near the elevator lobbies as you head to the cabin. And then there is just art sprinkled around. Take a few moments to appreciate these touches as there are some definitely unique pieces you won’t see anywhere else.

Relax: Ways to Unwind

A Royal Caribbean cruise lets you enjoy the best of both worlds – fast-paced fun and/or slowing down to savor some quiet time.

Enjoy some private romantic time Order room service for you and your significant other so the two of you can have meal together on your stateroom balcony. Toast each other as you watch the sun rise or set. (If you opted for shipboard accommodations without a balcony, Royal Caribbean ships offer plenty of spots where you can lounge on the pool deck with great views.)

Play shuffleboard If you’re in the mood for some laid-back fun, a game of shuffleboard gives you something fun to do with friends, family and fellow cruisers without taxing your muscles or energy level. It’s a perfect way to wind down, especially if you’ve been engaging in high-energy activities all day. Plus, it’s about as classic a cruise ship activity as you will ever see. You’ll see the courts painted with boxes nearby holding the equipment.

Relax at the spa If you crave relaxation, Royal Caribbean’s spas have you covered. Enjoy a massage or pamper yourself with a facial or mani-pedi. You can also just purchase a day pass to use the facilities. The menu of spa services also includes wraps, teeth-whitening, hair-styling, and makeup. Just know that there are extra charges for spa services. Still, the relaxation can be well worth the cost.

cruise activities list

Grab a towel and head for the pool As you would expect, every Royal Caribbean ship offers swimming pools, and usually we’re talking multiple options. Choose the pool that suits your style.

The main pool, open to all cruisers of all ages, enables the whole family to relax together. Kids’ pools provide splashing and spraying fun for children. The Solarium, open to adults, offers a quieter vibe – plus this pool is typically covered giving a warmer option if it’s chilly out.

No matter which pool you pick, you can soak up some sun or relax in the shade while sipping your favorite beverage.

cruise activities list

Let the kids go wild in Splashaway Bay We mentioned it in passing above, but Splashaway Bay on Royal Caribbean is a can’t-miss if you have kids. Instead of a pool, it’s an entire splash pad with water spraying everywhere, slides, interactive water features and more. If you have a kid that can’t swim yet, it’s the perfect place for them to get wet while you relax (or join in the fun).

Eat: Food, Glorious Food!

With so many delicious options to choose from, your only problem will be deciding which spot to eat at first.

Dine on gourmet Italian fare at Jaime’s Italian With a menu of Tuscan specialties designed by famed chef Jaime Oliver, Jaime’s Italian is a favorite dining venue among Royal Caribbean fans. Start with the Meat Plank, the shareable appetizer piled with mortadella, salami, prosciutto, pickles and cheeses. Then choose from fresh pasta, fish and seafood dishes, chicken, or burgers.

cruise activities list

Taste a little of everything at the Windjammer Royal Caribbean’s buffet — Windjammer — enables you to sample all your favorites, plus try some tempting dishes. Breakfast offerings include a selection of everything from omelets to bacon to French toast, pastries, and more. Lunchtime options range from sandwiches, salads, and soups to fresh-pressed paninis and various carving stations. For dinner, you can eat just about anything you can imagine, including salads, burgers, dogs, tacos, chicken, and beef dishes. Don’t forget to save room for the dessert, which include a number of options.

Get some sushi at Izumi Fans of Japanese cuisine can enjoy expertly prepared, impeccably presented sushi and sashimi, as well as a wide variety of Asian-inspired appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Just know that like many restaurants outside the buffet and main dining room, there is an extra charge.

Savor the taste of the sea at Hooked Seafood Choose from a menu of New England-style seafood classic dishes including crab cakes, crab claws, lobster rolls, plus raw-bar favorites like just-shucked oysters.

Chow down on Italian favorites Giovanni’s Table Even if your cruise doesn’t sail anywhere near the boot-shaped peninsula, you can satisfy your craving for fresh pastas, and braised meats and classic Italian dishes (lamb, chicken, shrimp, and veal) at this upscale Italian spot. One tip — try it for lunch for a cheaper price than what’s charged at dinner.

Dine in elegance at 150 Central Park Available on Oasis-class ships, 150 Central Park serves farm-to-ship cuisine using carefully sourced ingredients to create handcrafted gourmet experience. Dishes include halibut, duck, lobster, veal, and more.

Let your taste buds experience Wonderland In the mood for a culinary adventure? Take your taste buds down the rabbit hole to enjoy magical elixirs and sensory surprises. Wonderland is an Alice in Wonderland-inspired restaurant, right down to the menu you have to paint to reveal its contents. Meanwhile the entrees served also have a unique take on what you eat. Consider it one of the most memorable meals you’ll ever eat.

Grab a slice of pizza at Sorrento’s Sometimes you just want a slice of pizza. Sorrento’s serves up pies around the clock. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic cheese or pepperoni pizza or want to try one of the daily specialty toppings like chorizo or Hawaiian-style pizza, Sorrento’s will satisfy your cravings for pizza in a casual setting for lunch, dinner, or a late-night snack.

Compete: So Many Ways to Challenge Yourself

On a Royal Caribbean ship, you can choose from the latest game trends or go old-school to compete with others and prove who is the best.

cruise activities list

Get in a game of mini-golf Playing mini-golf is a great way to have fun with family members and/or friends. Shipboard mini-golf means you get to enjoy an ocean view while you play! It’s completely free and the good news is that the courses don’t usually get too crowded. It’s something you can play anytime, day or night.

Test your wits in an escape room Are you up to a brainteasing challenge? Can you and your team solve the clues and escape before the clock runs out? Whether you’re already a fan of the escape room trend or eager to try this challenge for the first time, you’ll have a blast racing against the clock to find clues so you can solve the escape room puzzle on many Royal Caribbean ships. The “Apollo 18” escape room, for example, gives you an hour to figure of the clues to launch the rocket… and is set in a control room that looks straight out of the 1960s.

Play video games in the arcade Ok, maybe you don’t think about playing video games on vacation, but your kids might. On the ships there are arcades with all sorts of games – from air hockey to skill cranes to shooting games. Royal Caribbean’s onboard video arcades vary from ship to ship, but they all offer the lure of parent-free fun amidst flashing lights. Of course, parents can play too.

Try your skill in trivia and sports If you love a little competition, then surprisingly a cruise ship can scratch that itch. Royal Caribbean puts on lots of games where you can test yourself against others. This includes trivia covering all sorts of topics from famous logos to flags of the world. As well, sports contests like free-throw competitions and soccer skills are also happening during the cruise.

Entertainment: Enjoy the Show

There’s something magical about watching a live performance; something you can’t get from streaming your favorite show or movie at home. Royal Caribbean gives guests a wide range of choices of live entertainment to enjoy.

Enjoy world-class entertainment at a Broadway at Sea production Royal Caribbean offers Tony award-winning Broadway shows. Recent productions offered onboard include Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Cats, and Grease. If you love razzle-dazzle shows with world-class performers singing and dancing with the full panoply of professional costumes, lighting, and sets, a voyage aboard a Royal Caribbean ship is your ticket to great entertainment. Best of all, these shows are free to watch.

cruise activities list

Be amazed at the skills of AquaTheater performers Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels feature the Aqua Theater, unique performance spaces where two 30-foot diving platforms flank the deepest pool at sea. Watch in awe as aerialists, acrobats, and high divers perform amazing feats as the ship sails. There is simply no other cruise line that has anything like this.

Listen to live music Royal Caribbean’s live music venues feature world-class musicians performing a wide range of sounds, from cover bands and acoustic to Latin and live jazz. You can take in a live concert every night of your cruise. They perform at venues around the ship in the evening, adding a nice soundtrack to the evening of entertainment.

Laugh your stress away with some comedy If you like comedy, you can laugh and enjoy yourself at sea. Just about any cruise will have a comedian. Sometimes they perform in a small venue and sometimes they are headliners in the main theater. No matter, the comedians will help put you in a good mood, with performers that have appeared on major broadcasts and venues.

Toast the official start of your cruise at the sail-away party Aboard every trip to the Caribbean is the sail-away party. To celebrate the moment your ship leaves port, Royal Caribbean hosts a party at the pool deck. All guests are invited to enjoy the festivities, which include drinks, dancing, and music. Don’t miss the fun, especially if you’re cruising for the first time.

Drink: I’ll Toast to That!

Quench your thirst, learn about wines, enjoy the way your favorite drink tastes accompanied by ocean air.

Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade on Royal Caribbean

Root for your favorite team at Playmakers If your favorite team is playing during your cruise, you can watch the action at Playmakers. Drink your favorite brew while snacking on Playmakers’ menu of sports bar favorites like burgers and wings. If you’re traveling during football season, then there is no better place to be.

Let a robot bartender serve you at the Bionic Bar In a cool twist on traditional drink service, many Royal Caribbean ships have the Bionic Bar. Here, you order your favorite cocktail via an iPad, then have it prepared and served to you by robotic arms. It’s a mix of mixology and technology as your perfectly prepared drink is put together.

Take a mini-tour of the ship from your bar stool It’s perhaps the most unique bar on any cruise ship anywhere. The Rising Tide Bar on Oasis-class ships is an elevator bar, gliding slowly up from the Royal Promenade on deck 5 to Central Park on deck 8. Don’t worry, you haven’t had too much to drink. The bar really is moving.

Bamboo Room sign on Royal Caribbean

Have a fruity cocktail from The Bamboo Room A tiki-inspired bar with all sorts of fruity concoctions? The Bamboo Room isn’t on every ship, but is a favorite for those that enjoy a tropical feeling. Step in and be transported back to mid-century when tiki bars were all the rage. It’s lively (especially near the action of the bar), but also offers spots to sit and enjoy the company of others in a cozy atmosphere where you don’t have to yell to be heard.

Enjoy poolside beverages at Lime and Coconut Perhaps the most popular bar on any Royal Caribbean ship will be Lime and Coconut. This is the poolside bar. Here you can get all the fruity tropical concoctions you’re dreaming about, all with barely having to leave your sun lounger.

Let Loose: Show Off a Little

You’re on vacation, so loosen up. Move your body on the dance floor, let your inner pop (or rock, or country) star cut loose on stage, put on your fanciest duds and/or a playful costume.

Enjoy an evening of elegance with formal nights If the elegance of cruising’s past makes you feel you were born too late, you’ll love this opportunity to wear your finest attire. Formal nights happen on each cruise and are perfect to get all dressed up and have a romantic evening. Be sure to take a photo so you can show all your friends back home how amazing you look on this special evening at sea.

Wear a fantastic costume at theme nights If you like to dress up but prefer a more playful atmosphere, you’ll enjoy Royal Caribbean’s theme nights. These festive evenings vary from voyage to voyage. Your cruise might offer ‘70s Disco Night, White Out, Caribbean Night, Country & Western, Latin or a Sock Hop. Don’t worry, you don’t have to dress up to enjoy the theme parties.

Play (or just watch) interactive game shows Watch – or participate in – one of Royal Caribbean’s shipboard game shows, based loosely on TV classic shows. One is a take on The Newlywed Game where contestants try to win by showing how well they know their spouse. Other game shows offered onboard include Battle of the Sexes and the adults-only Quest scavenger hunt.

What Is Included on a Cruise Vacation – and What Isn’t

If you’re planning a cruise and researching your cruise options, you’ve probably noticed that not everything is included with your cruise fare. Taxes, gratuities or a service charge , plus other “extras” are just some of the things not included with your cruise fare.

As cruise lines encourage cruisers to pre-book specialty restaurants, beverage packages, photo packages and more, many new cruisers are wondering… what IS included on a cruise.

This can be confusing and even overwhelming, especially if you’re on a budget, which is why I wrote a post about this a little while back: 10 Things Actually Not Included With Your Cruise

However, the fact is, a cruise still remains pretty a great value. Many of the “extras” are totally optional, and outside of alcoholic beverages expenses, a cruise can still be almost all-inclusive.

In this post, I’ll be going through what’s included with your cruise price (and what isn’t), so you can know what to expect and choose and budget accordingly.

What’s Included in the Cruise Fare and What’s “Extra”

1. cruise cabin accommodations and transportation to cruise port destinations.

Celebrity Summit Veranda cabin

This is really “the basics” right? Simply choose the cabin type that works best for you (interior, ocean view, balcony or suite) on your cruise ship or choice and your itinerary.

No matter the cabin you choose, you’ll have comfortable accommodations and a great place to sleep. Plus, all cruise staterooms come with twice a day housekeeping services, which means that you will feel very taken care of!

Extra expenses to be aware of when cruising

When you arrive at the cruise port, you may want to do an activity. You can book a shore excursion with the cruise line, choose a local vendor or even go on your own.

Excursions can add up, but you’ll find that most cruise ports have a beach close by as well some shops near the ship.

Tip: Research your cruise ports in advance, especially if you’ll be booking an excursion on your own or doing your own thing.

2. Cruise dining and food options

Cruise dinners

Most of the food and dining on board is included on a cruise. This includes the Main Dining-room, the buffet, as well as some other casual venues such as cafes and poolside grills or pizza.

It’s also pretty much unlimited. So if you love an appetizer in the Main Dining Room, feel free to order 2.

Snacks like fruit, soft ice cream, popcorn and snacks during the day and night are usually available and complimentary.

Truly, no one goes hungry on a cruse!

extra expenses to be aware of when cruising

What food isn’t included with your cruise?

Even though there’s honestly so much food to eat on the ship included with your cruise fare, there are some foods and optional restaurants that have an additional charge.

If you want a more intimate and special dining experience, check out the specialty dining restaurants on your cruise ship.

There may be fun casual restaurants that have an additional fee, but have a special experience, that can be fun (like Johnny Rockets on some Royal Caribbean ships).

3. Room service

room service

Speaking of cruise food, some cruise lines include FREE room service. We love the occasional breakfast out on our balcony, or a late night snack for the teen son, so it’s a good perk for us.

When is room service not included on a cruise?

Up until about 5 years ago, most popular cruise lines included free room service, but times have changed and now some family-friendly cruise lines do charge a service fee. Other cruise lines still include it, but have a surcharge after a certain hour.

If you enjoy this little luxury, see if it’s included when you research and plan your cruise.

4. Cruise private island beach days

Princess Cays

If you love an easy beach day, many cruse lines offer a private island experience on their Caribbean Itineraries. You’ll experience is a beautiful beach, lounge chairs, and a beach BBQ lunch.

There’s no need to pay anything extra on the private island, unless you want to for optional additional activities.

Princess Cruises has the gorgeous Princess Cays in Eleuthra, Bahamas. Holland America and Carnival use Half Moon Cay (with the most stunning turquoise waters!).

NCL has the Great Stirrup Cay and Harvest Cay. Disney has the magical Castaway Cay.

Royal Caribbean has Labadee, a peninsula off the coast of Haiti with beaches, a zipline and more! And finally, Royal Caribbean has the amazing newly updated (to say the least) Perfect Day Coco Cay.

Coco Cay

What is “extra” on the cruise private islands?

Most private islands have activities such as a glass bottom boat tour or banana boating as an optional excursion or activity.

However, each cruise and private island offers different experiences.

Perfect Day Coco Cay in particular (see photo above), has the ultimate choice of extra activities, and some come with extra fees .

Coco Cay does have a pool, beach and play park for kids that are included with your cruise fare.

However, there are some things that are really upgraded special experiences, such as a huge water slide/park and activities like a hot air balloon.

Like all cruise “extras”, budget accordingly if this is of interest to you.

Tip: Consider bringing your own snorkeling equipment from home and using it at several cruise ports.

5. Pool areas and lounge chairs

Celebrity Summit Main Pool updated

This might seem obvious, but hanging out by the pool on a lounge chair is a pretty great way to spend a sea day. Poolside games, line dancing, and other pool deck activities are included with your cruise.

Many cruise ships have both a main pool area, and an adult pool area if you prefer a more quiet atmosphere.

Are there sundecks private areas not included with your cruise?

Most cruise lines do have an area that is more private, either reserved only for suites, or an adult only area that is additional.

Private spa like areas, such as Princess Cruises’ Sanctuary, has a beautiful and luxurious space with a limited number of reserved lounge chairs. There’s a lovely spa menu available and included with the price, for either a half or full day.

Other cruise lines may have private adult only areas, that have different offerings, so do check the specifics of your cruise ship.

Tip: Towels are also given to you complimentary, so definitely don’t pack these from home.

6. Cruise Ship Entertainment

cruise ship theater production

Cruise ship entertainment is so worth it. If you’ve ever been to an all inclusive land resort, you’ll notice the variety and quality of on board shows is a huge step up!

On most cruise lines, the shows at night in the theater, lounges, and even in the skating rink and pool (Aqua show on some Royal Caribbean ships) is included.

This includes the cruise ship’s singers and dancers, as well as a band. However there’s always a variety due to guest entertainers such as  comedians, hypnotists and musicians.

We have seen amazing acts that I would gladly pay to see in a show back home.

What entertainment is additional on a cruise?

Occasionally, some cruise ships have a theater or a dinner show that’s optional and has an extra charge. Check your cruise reservation and activity options to see exactly what is included with your cruise.

7. What drinks are included

complimentary coffee on cruise ship

There’s so much talk about beverage packages, and I’ve seen these question come up many times in cruise Facebook groups.

“Is there anything for me to drink?”

“Is water free on a cruise?”

“Will I be able to get tea or coffee on a cruise, or so I need to buy the coffee package?”

Drink packages and what’s included on a cruise can be confusing.

What drinks are included on a cruise?

Coffee and tea in the buffet and main dining room. In some cases, like on Royal Caribbean ships, there is complimentary coffee also available at the Promenade Cafe.

A variety of juice from concentrate and flavored drinks are usually available in the buffet. At breakfast there will also be milk available.

The classic cruise ship drink, unsweetened iced tea is usually available as well. Since we started cruising in 2004, since is still one of our favorites. I add a slice of lemon and a splenda (as sugar doesn’t dissolve in the cold water/tea) and it’s perfectly refreshing.

Water is always available on board and safe to drink.

Tip: Consider bringing a good refillable water bottle or coffee mug with you on your cruise.

What drinks are not included on a cruise?

celebrity summit crush martini bar

Will you need or want to buy a beverage package? You might, depending on what you drink and how much you might drink.

Firstly, alcohol and soft drinks cost extra on most popular cruise lines. As well, fresh juice, bottled water, and specialty coffee have a extra fee.

In some cases, you may bring wine on board and will be charged a corkage fee (verify your cruise line’s policy).

If you would enjoy drinking alcohol, soft drinks or specialty coffee, consider checking the different packages available on your cruise line.

An example of a good value for some is Norwegian Cruise Line’s beverage package in the Free at Sea promotion .

8. Cruise ship Kids Club

If you’re cruising with kids, you’ll love the cruise line kid’s club. Cruise lines offer fun and interesting activities for children, and excellent supervision by the kid’s club staff.

Each cruise line has it’s own program such as Adventure Ocean on Royal Caribbean, Camp Carnival on Carnival ships, Princess Pelicans on Princess and so on.

When is there an extra charge for the kid’s club on a cruise?

While the kids club is available and complimentary during the day, there is an additional cost for evenings after 10 pm. If you do need or want some adult time, the small charge is well worth it, in my opinion.

Do check with your cruise line for the hourly fee, opening hours and other policies.

9. The Fitness Center

cruise fitness center

The usage of the cruise ship gym and fitness equipment is included in the cost of your cruise. Most cruise ship fitness centers are nicer and larger than hotel and resort gyms.

If you’re concerned about not gaining too much weight on your cruise , definitely check out the gym and pick a convenient time of the day to work out.

Many cruise ships have a few optional classes which are complimentary.

Is there an extra fee for fitness classes on a cruise?

While many cruise lines have a few fitness classes that are free, there will be optional classes available with an extra fee of about $10 or so per class.

We’ve cruised on Princess and Celebrity and found the classes that were included fantastic!

If you’re interested in this, when you board your cruise ship on embarkation day, head on over to the fitness center to sign up for some of the classes. Sometimes they fill up quickly, so best to sign up in advance.

10. Sea Day Activities

regal princess main pool

Tons of fun sea day activities are included with your cruise fare. Pool games , trivia, dance classes, zumba, movies on a big screen, lectures in the theater – there’s truly something for everyone.

On a recent cruise, our son did a fun archery activity (a sea-safe one) while my parents water color painted on a cruise! All included!

If you’d like to know more detail about what’s NOT included on a cruise, please watch this video below on our YouTube channel, Life Well Cruised.

What daytime activities aren’t included on a cruise?

While there are literally dozens of things to do on a cruise ship that are included, some that do have an extra fee include Bingo games (which are super popular).

Certain ships have some very “special” activities available, that have an extra fee.

This includes race cars on the Norwegian Bliss and the North Star on Quantum of the Seas. If you’re going on a cruise ship with a lot of the newest bells and whistles, do check to know what’s included on the cruise, and what’s not.

Is it worth it to do these special activities? They are pretty incredible and may be once in a lifetime. My suggestion is to check what will cost extra, and budget accordingly, if it will be special to you.

Recap: 10 Things That are Included in the Cost of Your Cruise (and what is extra)

In this post we went over 10 things that are actually included with your cruise fare, and some that are not. In addition to comfortable accomodations, most activities, entertaiment and food is included on a cruise.

Something to keep in mind is that gratuities for certain staff are not included, but suggested and usually automatically charged by the cruise line.

If you’d like to know more about cruse line gratuities and what to expect, this post is recommended:  Cruise Tipping Guidelines and Etiquette in 2019 (and beyond)

Is there something else that’s included with a cruise that we should mention? Will you pay more for some of the “extras”, or are you happy with what’s included with the cruise price?

Happy Cruising!

Discovering The Cruise Schedule Essentials

Great news: every evening of your voyage, the ‘Fun Times’ Newsletter arrives in your stateroom, chock full of everything you can enjoy the following day. When you realize it’s been delivered to your cabin mailbox, you snatch it up and start eagerly scanning through it, circling the events that catch your eye. And if you happen to forget your copy of the ‘Fun Times’ Newsletter in your cabin you can easily access all of this information and more on the Carnival HUB app . Between “Fun Times” and the app you’ll have access to all the information you could ever want to know about your journey, including top entertainment suggestions, onboard events, recommended attire (cruise casual, elegant, etc.), daily food and beverage deals, and more. This pairing is, without a doubt, the holy grail of cruise schedule essentials!

You start jotting down a plan, or creating one in the Carnival HUB app—an early morning pilates class sounds nice… and you simply MUST play a round or two of pickleball. Trivia, karaoke , spa treatments , shopping , lounging by the pool— you want to do it all during your time at sea! You keep going, and by the time you lift your pen, you’ve circled half the newsletter (don’t worry, we all do it). The possibilities are endless, and you can hardly wait.

POV: Cruising with Kiddos

family playing mini-golf

You’ve done a little research before arriving, and already know that younger kids aged 2-11 can head over to Camp Ocean —a supervised program designed to enlighten and entertain young minds— or to the wild and wacky world of Seuss at Sea , where families can watch as their favorite books are brought to life through onboard character parades, interactive story time, arts & crafts activities and more! Plus, how could anyone forget the Build-a-Bear Workshop at Sea ? A brief stroll to explore the ship already has your kiddos buzzing with excitement, their eyes lighting up at the flashing sights and sounds of the onboard arcade , the huge twisting water slides and the fun-filled playground that is SportSquare .

kids playing Jenga

Your tweens and teens, meanwhile, can’t wait to disappear into the spaces meant just for them. They’ve already scoped out Circle “C” (for ages 12-14) and Club O2 (ages 15-17), hang out spots where they can dance, karaoke, watch movies and play video games to their heart’s content.

mother and daughter on waterslide

And when you all come back together, you can already tell that there are plenty of family activities to go around. You can’t wait to laugh and scream with glee as you all race on the SkyRide , cool off together at WaterWorks and snuggle under blankets as the sun sets at a Dive-In Movie at the Seaside Theater.

POV: An Adults-Only Getaway

Couples spa treatment

If you’re cruising without kids, you’re acutely aware that your days are completely yours to fill with whatever your heart desires, whether that’s a dance class, a cocktail and a good book by the pool or a delicious meal at one of your ship’s onboard restaurants. You plan out a day of wellness — hitting the Fitness Center for some cardio, before grabbing a light breakfast at Lido Marketplace and then heading over to the Cloud 9 Spa Hydrotherapy Pool to soak up all the essential vitamins and minerals your body has been missing. It’s an R&R extravaganza, and it’s what you deserve. This is your cruise fantasy, after all!

Couple at alchemy bar with mixologist

As the sun sets, the ship transforms into a haven of nightlife and entertainment. You may start your evening with a cocktail at Alchemy Bar , where the bartenders use their mixology magic to turn regular cocktails into one-of-a-kind concoctions. Maybe you want to sing your heart out with some new friends at Piano Bar , or dance the night away at the Nightclub ! It’s all here, and it’s all within reach.

If you’ve made it this far, you already know that a cruise vacation is just the thing you’ve been missing. Click here to check out Carnival’s destinations, or click here to take a peek at all our sailings!

Cruise packing list: 56 essentials chosen by experts.

This cruise packing list includes all of the essentials – plus items you didn't know you needed.

Essentials to Pack for a Cruise

Downloadable Cruise Packing List

Packing for any trip takes some planning, but cruise vacations present a unique challenge – particularly due to limited stateroom storage space and sparse (or overpriced) options for purchasing accidentally forgotten items.

To help you decide what to pack for a cruise, we've curated a list of essentials recommended by cruise experts who regularly sail the high seas. Download the U.S. News Cruise Packing List pictured above to reference while you pack, and read on to learn more about the recommended items and where you can purchase them if needed.

  • For packing and planning
  • For travel and embarkation day
  • For the cabin
  • For the ship and shore excursions

Find your perfect cruise

Carry-on bag

Regardless of whether you bring checked luggage, you'll need some type of carry-on bag . Since checked bags need to go through security as they do at airports – and because you may need to wait for your stateroom to be ready, just like at a hotel – you'll want to be able to access any necessities pre-cruise. These might include a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the pools; medications; a bottle of water; and your smartphone, of course. You'll also want to keep your credit card , passport, and any other important documentation or valuables close by. A carry-on backpack works especially well since it can double as a day bag for shore excursions.

Checked bag

While you'll likely want to bring a checked bag, consider sharing one with your shipmate(s) to maximize stateroom storage space. Or, consider bringing medium-sized luggage, such as the The Medium by Away , for checking in.

Garment bag

While many cruises are less formal these days, a garment bag can still be handy for keeping select garments wrinkle-free (since clothing irons are prohibited on cruise ships). Top-rated options include the The Garment Duffel by Halfday and the Briggs and Riley Baseline 22" Carry-On 2-Wheel Garment Bag , both of which double as traditional luggage. If you pack your luggage right, you can make this your only suitcase, in addition to a carry-on bag.

Packing cubes or vacuum-sealed bags

Packing cubes are one of the best ways to organize your belongings for travel – especially in a tight cruise ship cabin. Top-rated options include the Veken packing cubes on Amazon (usually priced around $20) and all of the Pack-It Sets by Eagle Creek. The Pack-It Starter Set is especially ideal for cruising since it includes a garment folder designed to minimize wrinkles in clothing. Some cruisers also swear by vacuum-sealed bags , even though they can be a bit more tedious to pack.

Carry-on caddy

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer at The Points Guy, recommends a carry-on caddy , particularly if you're flying to your embarkation point. "I have a fabric sleeve that slides down over the telescoping handle on my carry-on to provide pockets for my passport, phone, coffee – all the things I used to have to juggle during check-in."

Digital luggage scale

The compact Etekcity scale – approximately $10 on Amazon – can weigh bags up to 110 pounds and help you avoid overweight baggage fees. You can often find these scales at your local Marshalls and HomeGoods stores too.

Bungee cord

"Especially for travelling with the family, I use a bright-green bungee cord to strap multiple pieces of luggage together," says Aaron Saunders, senior editor at Cruise Critic. "It's a lifesaver when boarding trains or disembarking ships, particularly when you ' re maneuvering a stroller and a little one around, too."

Luggage tracker

Courtesy of Apple

A luggage tracker isn't just useful for air travel. Attach one to your checked cruise luggage to see when it has arrived in your stateroom (or if it's stalled at security). Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic, doesn't go anywhere without her Apple AirTag after her luggage got stuck in Vancouver for over a week last June. "My AirTag use has expanded beyond my checked luggage, too. I also have AirTags in my handbag, my carry-on, my keychain and my wallet."

Cruise insurance

Due to the unpredictable nature of travel, cruise insurance can be a wise purchase ahead of your voyage. Travel policies can cover unforeseen expenses such as trip interruptions and medical emergencies.

While a passport is often required for cruising, rules can vary depending where you're traveling. Determine whether you need a passport for your upcoming cruise ; if you do, triple-check that you have it packed the day of departure.

Credit cards and local currency

When cruising internationally, consider getting small amounts of each country's currency to have on hand in port. Depending where you go, some local markets may only accept their own country's currency, not U.S. dollars or credit cards. It's also nice to leave cash gratuities for cab drivers, tour guides or servers; in the European Union, 1- and 2-euro coins are convenient and appropriate tips. In ports with vendors that do accept credit cards, be sure to carry a Visa or Mastercard , as some shops and restaurants do not take American Express .

RFID wallet

It's important to protect your travel documents with an RFID wallet like the TIGARI Passport Holder or the ZOPPEN RFID Travel Passport Wallet , the latter of which can hold multiple passports for a family. "Thieves and hackers can steal your credit card information just by using skimming devices," explains Jill Schildhouse, a cruise expert and U.S. News contributor who always travels with her RFID wallet. "And because your wallet wasn't even touched, you won't know it happened until you see your credit card statement."

Medications

Pack more than enough of your prescription medications as well as any over-the-counter medicines you'll need, just in case you encounter an itinerary change or travel delay. While some travelers find it easiest to bring personal medicines in their prescription bottles, others find travel pill boxes to be especially helpful for organization. The Sukuos Weekly Pill Organizer is a well-rated option, with detachable boxes for each day as well as compartments for morning and evening medications.

Sheet masks

Since flying can be so drying for the skin, Faust likes to use sheet masks. "My first step the night before I board (because you should always fly in a day early) is to hydrate with a sheet mask (usually from a Korean brand like Ballon Blanc or FaceTory )," she says. "If I'm meeting up with a friend, I bring an extra sheet mask so our trip starts out feeling a bit like a spa day!"

Magnetic hooks

A surprising fact: Cruise ship cabin walls are made of metal, which means you can optimize your storage space by hanging some of your belongings on magnetic wall hooks. The hooks are perfect for holding bulky coats or boots if you're traveling to a colder climate. You can also use them for wet gear on expedition ships and adventure cruises, or for drying out bathing suits after days at the beach or pool. Purchase a set of magnetic hooks for less than $10 on Amazon.

Like hotels, cruise ships can only provide so many hangers. Bring a few extras from home or pick up a pack from your local dollar store. You might also try packable hangers .

Wrinkle release spray

Whether or not you bring a garment bag, a travel-size bottle of wrinkle release spray, such as Downy Wrinkle Releaser spray , is useful to have on board. If you combine a spritz or two with the steam from your shower, you should be able to smooth out some of the wrinkles in your clothing.

Laundry detergent

"If you don't want to pay for laundry service or spend precious time in the self-service laundry room, bring a small bottle of laundry detergent like Woolite to wash key items in the sink: underwear, bras, quick-dry hiking shorts, bathing suits, etc.," recommends Schildhouse. "Every cruise ship shower has a retractable clothesline you can extend to drape the clothes over while they dry. This can also help cut down on the number of items you need to pack."

Over-the-door organizers

Over-the-door organizers with clear or mesh pockets allow you to find your feminine hygiene products, makeup, jewelry and other small items quickly – without having to hunt through multiple drawers or a tight stateroom closet. It's a good idea to purchase a two-pack like this option by Simple Houseware Store (available on Amazon), since you can also use one to store shoes and maximize floor space.

It goes without saying, but to say it anyway: A toilet spray like Poo-Pourri is a must for your cruise packing list. Any smell – pleasant or not – will travel quickly in small staterooms with small bathrooms. Buy a travel-size bottle to keep in your cabin.

Shampoo and conditioner

Cruise experts agree it's best to bring your own shampoo and conditioner in travel-size bottles, as most cruise ships don't provide separate shampoo and conditioner anymore; instead, they offer all-in-one dispensers. Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, likes to pack her shampoo and conditioner in the popular Cadence Capsules , noting she also uses them for another essential: sunscreen. "These capsules are easy to fill, never leak and have clear labels, which you can customize," she says.

Wine or Champagne

Most major cruise lines allow each guest to bring one to two bottles of wine or Champagne on board, while some luxury cruise lines allow even more than that. Disney Cruise Line also gives guests the option to bring a six-pack of beer instead of wine or Champagne. Be sure to consult your cruise line's policies when packing for your trip.

If you plan to bring wine or Champagne, you'll likely need a corkscrew . While some cruise lines may prohibit corkscrews, others allow them on board; check your cruise line's policy before sailing. Bringing wine with a twistable cap may be a good alternative.

Portable humidifier

Cruise ship cabins can feel dry – especially in the colder months. A portable humidifier like the GENIANI Erie (around $25 on Amazon) can provide some relief. At about half a pound, this USB-powered device will fit neatly into your checked bag or carry-on luggage. The travel humidifier features two mist settings and has an automatic shut-off option, plus a night light to help you see around your cabin in the dark.

International travel adapter or converter

You'll likely need a travel adapter, since cruise lines homeported in international locales may have different electrical sockets and voltage strengths than you're used to in the U.S.

McDaniel recommends the OneWorld65 Travel Adapter . "I've used a lot of different travel adapters over the years, but this is my favorite. It charges up to six devices at once, has USB and mini-USB options, and works in over 200 countries," she says. "While many cruise ships have U.S. outlets, most usually also have European outlets. This adapter lets me take advantage of that outlet I'd otherwise ignore." She also notes that while cruise lines are getting better about having more outlets on their ships, it never feels like enough to keep your phone, camera battery, tablet, watch, headphones/earbuds and laptop charged (times two or more if you're traveling with others).

Sound machine

Cruise experts agree a sound machine can be helpful for blocking out the sound of late-night partiers returning to their staterooms (or your snoring spouse). Schildhouse likes the LectroFan Micro 2 for cruising. "It plays non-looping white noise and doubles as a speaker to play tunes while you get ready for dinner."

Tech organizer

Open Bagsmart Electronics Organizer fills with cords against white background.

Courtesy of Bagsmart

A tech organizer like the BAGSMART electronics organizer case – available on Amazon for about $20 – can store all your cables, plugs, SD cards and earphones in one zippered, compact bag that will fit easily in your carry-on luggage. Despite its small size, it can also hold bulkier items like a small laptop charging cord.

First-aid kit

A first-aid kit is a good thing to have on hand no matter where you go. You can make your own using supplies you already have at home, or buy a premade first-aid kit on Amazon for about $20. While all cruise ships have medical facilities, it's useful to have these items with you on shore excursions, especially those involving active adventures.

Hand sanitizer

Regularly washing your hands and/or using hand sanitizer is essential to staying healthy while traveling, especially on a cruise ship. Stock up on a few travel-size bottles of hand sanitizer (less than $2 each at Walmart) ahead of your trip. If you're looking for something with less alcohol that's also less drying, check out Babyganics Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer .

If you're a parent, you know that your infant or toddler needs a very specific size – and in some cases brand – of diapers, which may very well be unavailable to you on your cruise ship or in the ports of call. Bring more than enough diapers to play it safe at sea.

Most cruise lines also require that non-toilet-trained infants and toddlers wear swim diapers in the children's water play areas. For the sake of sanitation, kids must be toilet-trained to use the pools on cruise ships.

Many cruisers like to personalize their cabin with stateroom door decor. Not only is it a fun tradition, but decorating the door can make it easier to locate your room, too. You can find lots of fun decor ideas on Pinterest as well as Amazon.

" Duct tape is a life-saver in many situations," says Kosciolek. "I primarily use it to attach my printed luggage tags, but it's also great for mending clothing issues on the fly and fixing broken luggage until you can get it back home."

"As a parent, I like to bring lanyards with sleeves so my kids can wear their keycards and not lose them," says Erica Silverstein, senior cruise editor at The Points Guy. "We hang them on the magnetic hooks I put on the wall, so they don't get lost in the cabin either."

Sea-Bands pack and bands in case against white background.

Courtesy of Sea-Band

If you're prone to (or think you may be prone to) motion sickness on cruise ships, put a pair of Sea-Bands on your cruise packing list. These soft wristbands use acupressure to prevent and minimize nausea and vomiting on board, and they are a reusable, drug-free alternative to traditional anti-nausea medications. You can purchase Sea-Bands on Amazon or at most drugstores.

If you need something a bit stronger than Sea-Bands (or to use in conjunction with them), Dramamine remains a tried-and-true solution for both preventing and treating sea sickness. Choose the Less Drowsy formula to avoid getting sleepy, and consider the chewable tablets (dye-free) if traveling with kids who are prone to queasiness. Many travelers like Bonine as a remedy for sea sickness as well.

Mix-and-match clothing

Pack a variety of mix-and-match items, also known as a capsule wardrobe, for your cruise. To do this, choose a base color – black or navy blue – for your wardrobe. Next, pack plain, neutral-colored items, then add a few patterned items to the mix. Remember to include a variety of styles (T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, pants, shorts, dresses, rompers and jumpsuits) and also consider reversible clothing and outfits that can easily transition from day to night.

Sports jacket or blazer

Adam Coulter, executive editor of Cruise Critic UK and Australia, recommends packing a sports jacket or blazer. "While cruise lines are getting more casual, what happens if you get that last-minute invite to meet the captain, or there's a meet and mingle where you want to look put together? A jacket will always elevate your elegance (even if you're wearing a T-shirt underneath)," he says. If you're in need of a travel blazer, Bluffworks has some well-rated options; the Gramercy , in particular, gets great reviews.

Themed party attire

Some cruise lines host themed voyages or parties on select nights where passengers can dress up to participate in the fun. You'll want to review your cruise itinerary before you go so you're prepared for the festivities. Bring your buccaneer gear if you're sailing aboard Disney Cruise Line; ships host fun events like Pirate Nights, pirate-themed dinners and a "Pirates in the Caribbean" show. On "The Love Boat"-themed cruises offered by Princess Cruises , pack your platform boots, glittery dresses, bell-bottom pants and halter tops for the line's 1970s-inspired disco party on the deck. No matter the theme, you can't go wrong with a couple of cruise captain hats .

Travel wrap

A travel wrap is a versatile accessory that's useful for any trip – even more so on a cruise ship where it can get chilly when the sea breeze picks up. Available in nearly 10 different colors, J.Crew's Oversized Cashmere Wrap is a timeless staple, albeit a bit of an investment; for something less expensive but well rated, try this off-brand pashmina shawl on Amazon .

Packable jacket

Courtesy of Patagonia

If you're cruising to a cold weather destination such as Alaska, you'll need something heavier than a travel wrap, but not so bulky that it requires additional luggage. Consider a packable jacket that folds easily and compactly; travel experts highly recommend the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket .

Packable hat

If you're headed to the Caribbean or another warm weather destination, you'll want a beach hat to protect your scalp and face from the sun. This packable straw hat by FURTALK (available on Amazon for about $25) is a stylish women's option that features a broader brim and offers UPF 50 sun protection.

Comfortable walking shoes

Courtesy of Allbirds

Even if you never step foot off the ship, there is still plenty of walking to do between bow and stern. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps are safer than flimsy flip-flops when boarding a slippery tender into port (if your ship can't dock directly). Check out our recommendations for the most comfortable walking shoes , which include the popular Allbirds Wool Runners and the ECCO Yucatan Sandals .

Water shoes

Depending on your scheduled shore excursions, you might also need a pair of water shoes. For something that's both functional and fashionable, Crocs' Classic Clogs are a good option. While not totally waterproof, the Native Jefferson is a water-friendly, versatile option.

Versatile heels

"Over the years, I've learned that the key to avoiding overpacking is to bring one neutral pair of low heels that match every single eveningwear outfit I've packed – from flowy pants to dresses," says Schildhouse. The Naturalizer Bristol Sandal is an ideal choice, with a cushioned footbed, a 2.5-inch heel, and great reviews. It's also available in a variety of colors.

Reusable water bottle

A reusable water bottle is useful for filling up at water and beverage stations on your cruise ship; it's also a necessity for shore excursions.

Bathing suit

Pack a couple of swimsuits for the pools, hot tubs and any shore excursions.

Swim cover-up

Another must-have for your cruise packing list is a swimsuit cover-up or two. These are great for wearing over your bathing suit during days at sea, as well as on excursions – especially if you're going on a Caribbean cruise . Amazon sells a variety of stylish, affordable cover-ups, and you can never go wrong with a classic white button-down shirt .

Dry bags are useful for shore excursions where you're likely to get wet but don't want the same to be true for your phone, camera and other precious items. "I use the Outdoor Research Unisex Dry Isolation Pack   and have never had so much as a drop of moisture enter it, which is important for me – it keeps my cameras, documents and important items from getting wet," says Saunders, adding that it functions as a great everyday backpack when it's not raining.

If you need more than one dry bag, cruise expert Brittany Chrusciel recommends the Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag Set . "Having these dry bags, in a variety of sizes, means I can bring all my gear along during a Zodiac cruise or snorkeling excursion without having to worry about it getting wet."

Waterproof phone case

A waterproof phone case is also essential, especially if you plan to take photos. The Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouches (available in a two-pack) come with a lanyard so you can both protect your phone and wear it around your neck. They are compatible with most smartphones.

"I like to bring collapsible pails, small shovels , inflatable beach toys, a floppy Frisbee or other things to entertain the kids on the beach if we're going to a private island or beach destination," says Silverstein. "If you can inflate your own inner tube, you don't need to rent a floating mat."

Beach towel

"Although cruise lines provide guests with towels to take off the ship on excursions, they are often bulky and sometimes small," explains Chrusciel. "The Surfer Towel folds up to nearly nothing, so it takes up almost no room in your suitcase and is super convenient to pack in a day bag. What's more, its quick-drying technology means that the lightweight fabric won't be soaking wet when you need to pack up for the day and head back to the ship."

Towel clips

"Even though giant plastic towel clips shaped like a flamingo are a bit cringey, they make it easy to find your spot in a sea of sun loungers," says Chrusciel. "They also solve a common cruise problem: keeping your towel securely fixed to your chair while reading or sunbathing."

Reef-safe sunscreen

Reef-safe sunscreen SPF 40 against white background.

Courtesy of Badger

When choosing a sunscreen, look for something that's reef-safe; not only are these sunscreens safer for the environment, but they're also better for you . The active ingredients in reef-safe sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of both. Top-rated mineral sunscreen brands include Think , Badger and Raw Elements , all of which also sell lip balm with sunscreen (another essential at sea).

After-sun lotion

You'll want an extra dose of moisturizer if you've been basking in the sun. COOLA makes an after-sun body lotion that cools and hydrates the skin with aloe vera, agave and lavender oil. Previous buyers rave about this lotion, noting they appreciate that the scent isn't overpowering.

A good book

Sea days are the perfect time to kick back and relax with a book you've been meaning to read. Find an oceanfront lounge chair in a shaded area on the pool deck, or grab a cup of tea and settle into a quiet nook indoors. There's no need to pack more than one book, however, as many cruise ships have libraries.

What not to pack for a cruise

Power strip.

Many cruise lines do not permit power strips as they present a fire hazard, while others allow them as long as they are non-surge-protected. Instead of a power strip, purchase a portable charger such as this highly rated one by Anker , which can power up multiple devices at once. This can be especially useful for shore excursions. When packing for your cruise, also think about your luggage: If it has an included charging port, you may not even need to purchase an additional charging block.

Weapons and restraints

Firearms, handcuffs and the like are not permitted on cruise ships. This rule also includes toy guns on most cruise lines.

While most major cruise lines allow guests to pack a limited amount of wine or Champagne per person, they do not permit hard liquor. Of course, those of age can purchase cocktails at any of the bars on board.

Household appliances

Irons and steamers are not permitted on cruise ships, which is why the aforementioned garment bags, wrinkle release spray and packing cubes are recommended for keeping clothing tidy and neat. Coffee makers and mug warmers are also prohibited.

While you can technically bring you own, it's not necessary as hairdryers are available in every bathroom on most ships.

CBD and marijuana

CBD that's derived from hemp and contains 0.3% THC or less is legal at a federal level. However, each state interprets and enforces this law differently; for example, many states require a prescription for it. Due to the ambiguity of the laws, most cruise lines continue to ban CBD in any form.

Marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law, which means you cannot bring it on a cruise ship – even if you're legally able to purchase it in your home state for recreational or medical use.

Norwegian Escape

Introducing Norwegian's New Season of Summer 2026 Sailings

Norwegian Announces New Season of Sailings for Summer 2026

We’ve just unveiled our first itineraries for Summer 2026 — a group of sailings based on guest feedback and global travel trends. One major point of growth across the world of travel is the desire to see new destinations while remaining close to home. Our gorgeous fall New England & Canada cruises offer the unique opportunity to do just that. Guests can discover new regions, landscapes, and cities they’ve never seen before, but do so from a close-to-home port.

Cruises to Bermuda are also the perfect way to get a dose of sun and sand without travelling too far. And everyone loves The Caribbean , how can you not? So we’re sending one of our newest ships, Norwegian Prima, on both Eastern & Western Caribbean itineraries that can be enjoyed separately or combined together for an unforgettable tropical vacation. One bucket-list destination that is not close to home but is best explored by cruise ship is Alaska , and no one does Alaska like NCL. The summer and fall are the best time to explore The Last Frontier (think Northern Lights and Midnight Sun), and our 2026 itineraries to The Greatest Outdoors are sure to be our best yet!

Norwegian Jewel in Philadelphia

A Philadelphia Story for Norwegian Jewel

What do the Liberty Bell, Rocky Balboa, cheesesteak sandwiches and Norwegian Jewel have in common? They'll all be in Philadelphia in the spring of 2026. (OK, Rocky is a statue, but you get the idea). Yup, Norwegian Cruise Line is officially the only cruise line home porting in the City of Brotherly Love.

The exquisitely refurbished Jewel will start her journey in April 2026, transporting guests from the streets of Philadelphia to the pink sands of Bermuda . These months are ideal times to visit this beautiful British territory, thanks to the region’s mild, sub-tropical climate and its southerly winds. All sailings spend multiple days in the famous Royal Naval Dockyard , providing plenty of time to explore the island’s exciting attractions, first-rate shopping, world-class golf and maritime history.
