Magical Liuwa Plain + rhino climate woes
![africa safaris email address](https://africageographic.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/simontest2.jpg)
Have you noticed how difficult it is to find stimulating and informative nature-based content on most cable and streaming channels?
It’s usually hidden somewhere under ‘lifestyle’ or ‘documentaries’ and fights for attention with celebrities on staged ‘wilderness’ immersions, psychopaths out to kill the largest ‘killer fish’ or drama queen wranglers harassing snakes. Seems like there has to be a focus on humans, with nature as a prop.
There are some gems out there (like WaterBear and BBC Earth), but for the rest we have to subscribe to eight or ten channels and mine each for thought-provoking content. Any other channel suggestions where the clutter and distractions are not so disruptive?
Meanwhile, in my hometown bordering the Greater Kruger, the flowering aloes are a source of important nourishment for bushbabies, squirrels, and nectar-loving birds – and the bright flashes of yellow, orange, and red against the drab background are a wondrous sight. The bushveld looks as barren as it usually is at the tail end of the dry season in October. Poor summer rains for a few years mean this will be a challenging year for wildlife .

Don’t mess with a meerkat on a mission. Especially if that meerkat is the dominant female . Known to maintain their positions of power by killing female relatives and any offspring they may bear, meerkat matriarchs are fierce.
But a recent study has found that dominant females have a secret ingredient that helps them gain their social status, and stay on top: super immunity. Scientists studying meerkats in Kuruman River Reserve, South Africa, found that dominant females possess “immunity genes”, as well as a stronger response to inflammatory stimulus – both lacking in their peers. These allow the meerkats to better fight infection and maintain their social standing. The discovery shows that meerkat’s social lives impact molecular processes happening in their cells. Social interactions matter more than we think!
This week, we delve into the wonders of Zambia’s Liuwa Plain National Park, and examine the negative effect climate change may have on rhinos. See below.

Collaring Kruger’s lions
Five lionesses in Kruger National Park will become part of an exciting project aiming to provide insight into how lion pride behaviour differs in fenced and open systems. In August, teams from Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and the Southern African Conservation Trust (SACT) will set out to fit satellite-tracking collars on the lionesses.
This exciting project aims to compare various behaviours between open and fenced systems by:
- Testing the effect of pride strength on territory size;
- Measuring territory infringement;
- Testing the pride’s aggressive response during territory infringements;
- Comparing stress levels of prides; and
- Comparing the ratio of prey resource availability to home-range size.
You can help in this important study by sponsoring a collar in full or by donating any amount – large or small – to support this critical conservation project. Learn more here .

Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Safari vacations are not exclusive to Africa. While I’d never dismiss the iconic African savannah experience—it’s a bucket list trip for a good reason—I’ve had similar adrenaline-pumping moments of awe and wonder while enjoying safari-style vacations elsewhere in the world. Thrilling moments that compete with my African safari experience: tracking one-horned rhinos in the jungles of Nepal; swimming with wild penguins in Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands; following bouncing kangaroos while on a 4WD safari in Australia’s Outback.
These experiences have made me an advocate for looking beyond Africa when seeking immersive, wildlife-centric vacations. With that in mind, below is a curated a collection of destinations to add to your safari-going bucket list. A few won’t even require a dramatic time zone adjustment.
BRAZIL Where to go: The Pantanal
Wildlife: jaguars, caimans, capybaras, anteaters, tapirs, monkeys, more than 600 bird species (including hyacinth macaws and jabiru storks)
The Pantanal is a flourishing ecosystem that straddles the country’s border with Bolivia and Paraguay. Overshadowed in popularity by its famous cousin to the north, the Amazon, the Pantanal is one of Brazil’s biggest open travel secrets. At 42 million acres (80 percent of which reside in Brazil), it’s the world’s largest wetland, making it a fertile destination for wildlife and a fabulous setting for safaris that include overnight stays in treetop jungle lodges. Jaguar safaris are popular here, as the region is home to South America’s highest concentration of this majestic big cat.
Pro-Tip: Add a few nights in the Amazon rainforest for an even more comprehensive South American safari.
NEPAL Where to go: Chitwan National Park
Wildlife: rhinos, sloth bears, monkeys, hyenas, guar (Indian bison), jackals, leopards, crocodiles, fresh-water dolphins, more than 500 bird species
Widely known for its breathtaking mountain ranges and epic hiking trails, Nepal also offers a rich tapestry of wildlife encounters in Chitwan National Park. Located in the southern lowlands of Nepal, it spans 360 square miles of fertile valleys and subtropical broadleaf forests at the foot of the Himalayas. Traditional jeep tours, jungle hikes, elephant rides, and canoeing are among the ways to get ruggedly intimate views of its wildlife. The most popular animal here is the one-horned rhino; however, keep an eye out for elusive royal Bengal tigers that also make rare cameos.
Pro-Tip: This is a great safari adventure to pair with a trekking holiday in the Himalayas.
ALASKA (USA) Where to go: Denali National Park and Preserve, Katmai National Park & Preserve, Kenai Fjords National Park, Glacier Bay National Park
Wildlife: grizzly bears, brown bears, wolves, caribou, orcas, whales, otters, puffins, bald eagles, polar bears
Alaska is home to 8 national parks and 16 national wildlife refuges that offer a pristine and rugged wilderness setting in which to see bears, caribou, eagles and much more. The modes of guided travel in which to take these wildlife excursions—such as flightseeing, snowshoeing, canoeing and kayaking—are sometimes just as exciting as the wildlife you’ll spot amidst a landscape of glaciers, mountains, and forest. For those seeking an even bigger adventure, multi-day polar bear viewing trips are available in Alaska’s Arctic region.
Pro-Tip: The best opportunity to spot bears catching salmon from Alaska’s rivers is from June to August, when bears are fattening up for winter hibernation.
SRI LANKA Where to go: Udawalawe National Park, Yala National Park, Bundala National Park, Wilpattu National Park
Wildlife: Elephants, leopards, monkeys, sloth bears, jackals, water buffalo, crocodiles, sea turtles, blue whales, peacocks
This tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean is home to 26 national parks that are packed with incredible wildlife. The flat, open grassland of Udawalawe is ideal for elephant spotting; while Yala is home to one of the highest densities of leopards in the world and boasts a coastline that is visited by all five globally endangered sea turtles: the leatherback turtle, loggerhead sea turtle, hawksbill turtle, olive ridley sea turtle, and green turtle.
Pro-Tip: Bundle together a few different parks so that you’re able to experience not only Sri Lanka’s diverse wildlife, but also its diverse accommodation options, ranging from jungle lodges to tented camps to seafront hotels.
ECUADOR Where to go: Galapagos Islands
Wildlife: giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, iguanas (marine and land), sea lions, fur seals, frigate birds, hammerhead sharks, finches, flamingos, penguins
These islands roughly 600 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador are teeming with some of the most unique wildlife in the world—a menagerie of animals that famously inspired Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. The best way to experience the Galapagos Islands is by joining a naturalist-led, multi-night boat expedition that will string together the more remote islands in this archipelago. Guided hikes and snorkel swims will bring you up-close—like, really close—to animals often just as curious about us as we are of them.
Pro-Tip: If you don’t want to be sleeping on a boat or cruise ship, base yourself at a hotel on the islands of San Cristobal or Santa Cruz, respectively, and take daytrips to nearby islands.
AAA Travel Advisors can provide vacation planning guidance to make your next trip unforgettable. Find a Travel Advisor
AUSTRALIA Where to go: Kakadu National Park and Daintree Rainforest are among the many options in this massive country
Wildlife: kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats, echidnas, platypus, dingoes, sea turtles, dolphins, sea lions, sharks, more than 800 species of reptiles (lizards, snakes, crocodiles), more than 800 species of birds (such as the barking owl, the little penguin, and the laughing kookaburra)
Australia’s wild places are as diverse as they are vast. Two areas to consider weaving into an itinerary: Kakadu National Park and the Daintree Rainforest. Enjoy a Crocodile Dundee-inspired adventure at Kakadu, where its savanna woodlands, floodplains, and tidal mudflats are home to wallabies, saltwater crocodiles, and much more. Take 4WD and riverboat safaris into the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest on the planet, where striking animals such as the Southern cassowary and the Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo reside. Because this rainforest stretches out to the Coral Sea, home to the Great Barrier Reef, you can pair a stay here with some ocean exploration, too.
Pro-Tip: Weave in Aboriginal experiences (such as Dreamtime Walks led by Aboriginal guides) into your itinerary for extra layers of meaning.
INDIA Where to go: Ranthambore National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Jim Corbett National Park, Kanha National Park, Gir National Park, Hemis National Park, Singalila National Park
Wildlife: Royal Bengal tigers, Asiatic lion, elephants, leopards (including the elusive snow leopard), monkeys, sloth bears, gaur (Indian bison), red pandas, more than 1,300 species of birds
The jungles of India inspired Rudyard Kipling’s masterpiece, The Jungle Book. While the tome featured a menagerie of animals, one remains the top safari draw in India: the Bengal tiger. Most escorted safari adventures will include one or two tiger-centric parks in the itinerary, but it’s worth exploring some of the lesser-visited parks to spot other globally endangered animals in the wild, such as the red panda (Singalila National Park) and snow leopard (Hemis National Park).
Pro-Tip: Ranthambore National Park is close to the popular “Golden Triangle” area of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, making it among the most popular places to experience a tiger safari.
BORNEO (MALAYSIA) Where to go: Danum Valley, Kinabatangan River, Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Deramakot Forest Reserve, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Kiabalu Park, Bako National Park
Wildlife: orangutans, pygmy elephants, monkeys, flying squirrels, macaques, crocodiles, more than 600 species of birds
Borneo’s most famous inhabitant is the orangutan. In fact, this is one of just two places in the world where you can still spot these tree-dwelling apes with distinctive red fur. (The other is the Indonesian island of Sumatra.) Safari vacations that take you into the rainforests on the Malaysian side of Borneo are popular because wildlife hotspots are relatively close together. Join guided hiking excursions into the lush rainforest of the Danum Valley and river safaris down the Kinabatangan River, keeping eyes up for orangutans swinging in the treetops, building nests for sleep and munching on wild fruit.
Pro-Tip: End the safari adventure with some R&R on a white-sand beach, such as those found in nearby Bali.
ANTARCTICA Wildlife: penguins, whales, seals, sea lions, more than 40 species of birds (albatrosses, petrels, diving petrels, swans, etc.)
Largely untouched by humans, Antarctica is an intrepid traveler’s playground. Colonies of penguins and pods of whales will wow you against a vast landscape of icebergs and glacial tundra. Most multi-night, expert-led cruise expeditions boast an immersive itinerary that is flexible to what weather conditions will allow. Expect educational lectures, Zodiac boat tours, kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, photography lessons—and sometimes, even camping and the opportunity to take an Arctic plunge.
Pro-Tip: Most Antarctica expeditions leave from Ushuaia, the southernmost city Argentina, and make the 50-hour voyage to Antarctica by crossing the Drake Passage. If you’re insanely wealthy, however, you could visit Antarctica in one or two days by booking roundtrip flights to completely bypass the journey by sea.

South Africa Economic Outlook - April 2024
Despite its challenges, South Africa is still receiving a steady stream of foreign direct investment inflows
South Africa received foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows of nearly R100 billion in 2023 as non-resident maintained a ‘moderately positive’ view on the country’s business ecosystem.
Johannesburg, 29 April 2024 — PwC South Africa is pleased to share its fourth South Africa Economic Outlook report for 2024. In this edition, we focus on FDI and what South African companies can do to attract international deal interest.
It would come as a welcome surprise to many South Africans to learn that, despite the country’s many challenges, our economy still attracted almost R100 billion in FDI inflows in 2023 – equal to 1.4% of GDP. In fact, while some might expect South Africa’s investment outflows to be larger than inflows, the country has seen a net FDI inflow (inflows minus outflows) in every year since the global financial crisis.
South Africa has many positive attributes for foreign investors, including world-class financial services and communication industries, a deep capital market, quality tertiary institutions producing graduates with internationally-comparable qualifications, abundant natural resources (including renewables), a strategic geographical location for entry into the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa, a transparent legal system, and a certain degree of political and policy stability, among many other features.
The perception among non-resident of South Africa’s public governance and business ecosystem are ‘moderately positive’ on average, according to data and classifications from research by nation branding experts Bloom Consulting . PwC’s review of this data shows that international perceptions of South Africa’s public governance and business ecosystem echo the results from other international benchmarking reports: that South Africa’s performance is near the middle of the pack when countries are ranked, and not as dismal as some might think.
For example, when considering the country’s economy and business ecosystem, the average perception score between those familiar and those who are unfamiliar with South Africa indicate a ‘moderately positive’ view on the local business environment. This is in line with, for example, the Venture Capital & Private Equity Country Attractiveness Index 2023 produced by the IESE Business School that ranked South Africa 66th out of 125 countries. This placed South Africa near the middle of the country list – something to be moderately positive about – and in the company of countries like Malta, Croatia and Slovakia.
“Despite its challenges, the South African economy is more diversified and stable compared to many other African economies. The country has a very strong financial services and deep capital market, which is more sophisticated than most markets in Africa. South Africa’s banking industry offers clients access to a comprehensive suite of financial instruments and services alongside a robust banking regulatory framework that ensures the safety and soundness of financial institutions and their clients.” Olusegun Zaccheaus, PwC West Africa Strategy& Leader
Data from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) shows that the cumulative value of foreign liabilities (inward investment stock) totalled nearly R3 trillion in 2022 (the latest available data). The manufacturing industry held the largest share, accounting for 38.5% of liabilities, followed by mining (24.2%) and financial services (20.0%). South Africa’s factory sector is home to production facilities owned by some of the world’s largest producers of vehicles, food products and building materials, amongst others.
To understand the economic impact of FDI, we modelled the contribution to the economy of a R5 billion brownfield capital investment in a local automotive manufacturing facility. This simulates the investment needed to upgrade an existing factory to produce a new model line. Investing this money in the upgrade of an existing plant – with 58% of the money spent locally and 42% on imported equipment – would create R3.5 billion in additional national GDP, create and/or sustain 9,000 jobs during the upgrade process, and contribute R673 million to the fiscus.
“South African businesses need to be awakened to the possibilities that foreign investment offers them and the country as FDI can play a significant role in business and economic development. It provides local industries and the economy with capital inflows, expansion of business into new markets, cost reduction through economies of scale, and skills enhancement of domestic employees. At a macroeconomic level, FDI adds to the country’s GDP, increases employment and household income, and contributes taxes to the fiscus.” Lullu Krugel, PwC South Africa Chief Economist
At a company level, the advantages of FDI are easy to comprehend. These include, among many other benefits, the expansion of business into new markets, cost reduction through economies of scale as part of a larger international commercial entity, and skills enhancement of domestic employees through exposure to new technologies.
In PwC’s experience, potential foreign investors are looking for three specific things from prospective investment targets in South Africa:
- A demonstrated track record of commercial sustainability across all the systemic crises the country has experienced over the last 30 years. This can be achieved through conducting a financial due diligence (FDD).
- Demonstrating that they are well positioned to maintain their performance into the future. That means having relevance in a growth industry underpinned by strong fundamentals. This can be achieved through conducting a commercial due diligence (CDD).
- Demonstrating capabilities that can be exported to solve emerging issues in other territories.
An FDD provides peace of mind to buyers by analysing and validating the financial, commercial, operational and strategic assumptions being made. It uses past trading experience to form a view of the future maintainable earnings, key value drivers, inherent risks in the business and confirms that there are no 'black holes'. In turn, a CDD assesses the historical and forecast assumptions and performance from the perspective of the markets, customers, competitors and internal capabilities of the organisation. The due diligence provides insight of the growth projections used as a basis for the proposed deal.

Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel.
