Cancelled Project Greetings, So, I have got a lot of requests from members here wanting to see my concept phaser I built for Into Darkness. Well, I'm finally getting around to it. I hope you guys like what you see. I guess I'll start by saying how much I enjoyed what JJ did for the franchise. Yes, there was a couple minor things I wished were different but I think he really did a great job and I'm proud I got to be a part of it. When I saw JJ's 2009 version, I loved how he stayed true to a lot of things but with a modern up to date twist. The uniforms were great, the ships (IMHO) were cool, but most of all.... I loved how the actors "fit" their characters. The only real thing I thought should have been different was the phaser. Don't get me wrong.... I like it but considering how the uniforms were close to the TOS uniforms, I would have loved to see that in the weapon as well. Anyway, before actual filming took place and everything was in pre production, I decided to come up with a really cool phaser and put it in JJ's hands. So, I enlisted the help of one of my Hollywood illustrator friends (Ray) to help come up with some ideas. I really only had my heart set on one concept but I also wanted to make sure we had enough ideas on the table for when that time came. Considering my illustrator bud Ray was a huge Trek fan, it was not hard to get him in on this. I had written down everything I wanted for my version of the phaser. I wanted this thing to do everything the TOS phaser did and more. After explaining everything to him about what I wanted for my concept, I asked him to draw it up in a professional illustration so that the art could also be put in front of JJ along with the built up version. Again, I already had my mind made up on how I would like the phaser to look so I left all the other concept ideas to Ray. Let me say, he came up with some amazing ideas. All of them better than the last. So, after explaining to him what I wanted and all the details and functions, he went to work on the artwork. It wasn't soon after when he emailed me the first draft of my concept. Ray nailed it! Everything.... every detail I explained.... he got it right on the first try. I then went to work on what you see below. Ray began working on other ideas..... several weeks worth of ideas. I began to CAD the concept in Solidworks. Now, for those of you that don't know me.... I tend to favor going overboard. I love props with tons of **** on them and all functioning.... even knowing most of it would never be used or seen on screen. Here's one example of how I look at things. Say you have to build a prop... a gadget. This gadget has access panels and screws etc. This prop (even if its the hero) would be build as a single solid piece and then the panels and screws painted to make it look like individual parts. I don't like that. I build my parts with a mechanical engineering frame of mind. All the panels and screws etc are all individual pieces and assembled to give the final look.... which looks extremely real. Now, some of you may say.... Kenney.... you're fool of ****. LOL Well, some of you have seen real hero props up close and know what I'm talking about. On screen, they may look good. They get "the shot". However, up close.... not so much. I have always tried to do more with my builds.... even if it meant more work. I have been told by friends of mine, in the business, that I do way too much. That's just me. After completing the CAD model and double checking to make sure all the individual parts actually moved and worked in the CAD model, I 3d printed all the parts. I used my SLA machines for these parts. I have since started moving to polyjet after purchasing a Objet printer. Look at this first pic of the concept phaser..... then look at the second pic of all the individual parts. Now you know how I like to design and build. The hero Enterprise phasers I made for the film are just as crazy. I love being creative and I love to challenge myself every time. Enjoy! Cancelled Project

Re: Star Trek: Into Darkness "Concept" Phaser by Kenney's Custom Props, LLC I really like this concept! And I love the attention to all the mechanical details here, as well. Actually, I think I like this design better than what they filmed- thanks for sharing this with us!

Re: Star Trek: Into Darkness "Concept" Phaser by Kenney's Custom Props, LLC Oh man, I LOVE that shade of blue! Such great work. It looks so very great, but I can maybe see why the filmmakers didn't use it ( maybe a bit "boxy" in comparison to the hyper ipod sleekness of the Enterprise?). Do you have any profile shots of it? And thanks for explaining your thought processes in making your props. It's always nice to read about how someone goes into designing a piece like this.

Re: Star Trek: Into Darkness "Concept" Phaser by Kenney's Custom Props, LLC Fantastic phaser. I personally don't like the one they used. just seems like a bad idea for a weapon...

Re: Star Trek: Into Darkness "Concept" Phaser by Kenney's Custom Props, LLC I think this concept phaser fits into the new Trek world better. The retro looking one used in the movies doesn't seem to fit the white Apple store style Enterprise set. Kenney, could you offer to sell prints of the multiple concept phaser drawings by Ray? More importantly, will you be offering a kit or finished build of this concept phaser. If so, count me in.

FIRST LOOK: Discovery Phaser Rifle Prop Replica

star trek custom phaser

For many of us, Star Trek is our home, someplace we enjoy spending our time. Star Trek: Discovery is like a brand-new house, and a very modern one at that. Moving into a new house can be exciting with new spaces and a whole new architecture and ascetic to explore. But any new dwelling needs a touch of the familiar, just enough to remind us that we’re home. Discovery strikes a perfect balance between the classic and new with its props.

Take the Phaser Rifle from Discovery and you’ll see precisely what I’m talking about. It’s a fully modern piece of design, but takes its inspiration from Captain Kirk’s original rifle. The shape of the prop, its dimensions and especially its Tri-Barrel body are straight from 1965 (2265?), but translates that into something our modern sensibilities can believe today. It’s no easy task riding the line between the past and future, and that’s the job of Discovery prop master Mario Moreira.

star trek custom phaser

Mario and his team are tasked with creating the objects depicted in the future seen in Discovery while remaining ever cognizant of the fact that their show sits within a slice of time between “ The Cage ” and “ Where No Man Has Gone Before ,” and so can pull from both eras to create something new. The Phaser Rifle echoes this very well by using the three-point emitter from Captain Pike’s Laser Pistol and marrying it to Captain Kirk’s Phaser Rifle so that we get something fresh and cool.

Even color can add a lot to the feel of pieces like this, and when we recently talked to Mario about the Discovery Rifle, additional touches were deliberately mirrored into the final prop: “The orange foil was a last-minute addition to ours. When we received the mock-up I realized it was too distant from the TOS version, so we took apart the cowling, and painted it to match the foil. In the end it was a subtle addition that helped tie in the design.”

star trek custom phaser

Something just that subtle can make or break a good prop, and that’s always on our mind when creating our replicas.

Replicating props, we start with the 3D files that the originals were created from. We also work closely with people like Mario who created them to begin with, to ensure that we capture every nuance of the original piece. Then we do what we can to bring what started out life as a prop for a show into the real world. That task falls to people like John Eblan at KorbenFX, who take all the information anyone could want about a particular piece to recreate one from the ground up.

star trek custom phaser

In this case, all that work ensured that our replica Phaser Rifle can function just as the screen-used prop did on the show: with a retractable butt-stock that locks, light-up setting selector, light-up emitters (which change color based on how the emitter nozzle is turned), functional tactical lights, and then amazingly improve upon that by adding enhanced features such as incorporating a functional OLED screen for the targeting scope that features an interactive playback element as a Heads-Up Display (H.U.D.).

star trek custom phaser

Finally, having ensured that each replica looks and feels “right,” it is packaged with a Certificate of Authenticity, a display stand inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge (yet another touch of the familiar), as well as the Phaser Rifle itself. And the reason to go to such lengths to get what amounts to a make-believe artifact feel so real? So, we can bring a piece of the future into our homes… now.

Star Trek | The Next Generation Type-1 Cricket Phaser Limited Edition Prop Replica

Packing a hefty punch inside a compact body, this 1:1 scale replica of the iconic Type-1 Cricket Phaser prop from Star Trek: The Next Generation features a variety of electronic light and sound effects neatly encased in a heavy cast metal frame. During their long tenure, many different Cricket phaser props were made. These ranged from fairly primitive non-functioning ‘stunt’ props to quite elaborate ‘hero’ props with functioning electronics. As is normal for productions, a number of modifications and changes were made to the different props over the course of time. This replica has been designed to capture the best elements of all of the variants in a single blended execution. The replica has a variety of electronic light and sound features designed to simulate the special effects seen on screen, including both effects featured in the hero props and effects added in post-production, as well as a ‘Crusher’ mode effect seen only in the episode ‘The Game.' Each numbered, limited edition, museum-quality replica comes with a wooden presentation case, metal plaque and a certificate of authenticity/prop story booklet and will make a fine addition to any Star Trek collection.

Limited To 800 Pieces Dimensions: Type 1 Cricket Phaser -- 3 x 1¼ x 1” (76 x 31 x 25mm) Display Box -- 6½ x 6½ x 3” (165 x 165 x 76mm) Requires 4 x LR44 0%hg (A76, AG13, ) batteries, which are included.

Here’s the full breakdown from ANOVOS:

ANOVOS is proud to offer the STAR TREK™ DISCOVERY Starfleet Phaser Rifle Interactive Prop Replica. This STAR TREK™ DISCOVERY costume accessory was created using reference taken from the original screen-used production assets, and produced in the exacting manner that the screen-used pieces were for production, including:  · Fully-finished interactive replica, with 3D print construction just like the actual hero production pieces were for production of STAR TREK™ DISCOVERY. · “Stun” and “Kill” settings selected by side button on left, with lit “ring” indicator light at top. (“Stun” is blue; “Kill” is red.) · Faux laser sight slung under-barrel, which is activated by a button on the left instrumentation panel under the targeting scope. · Side-mounted, functional tactical light with consumer-replaceable batteries. · OLED screen with playback H.U.D. in scope. · Front-mounted locking swivel handle for two-handed operation. · Functional butt-stock with locking pin. · Replaceable consumer batteries — no need to worry about shelf-life for unserviceable, custom-made rechargeable batteries. · Rotating barrel that locks into three positions, each with its own aperture and color. · Display stand, designed as a nod to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, home of Starfleet Headquarters. · Certificate of Authenticity from ANOVOS

The company projects that the first preordered phaser rifle replicas will start to ship in “Winter 2018” based on current estimates, but that can certainly change depending on how their production timeline proceeds over the next several months.
