Snowcoach Tours

A ride through winter's wonderland.

Winter in Yellowstone National Park is altogether surreal. Picture steaming geyser basins and thermal pools juxtaposed with pure white snow. Most of the roads in Yellowstone are closed to vehicular traffic this time of year, which makes it a good time for Nordic skiing , snowshoeing , guided snowmobile tours and snowcoach touring.

Snowcoaches are basically tour buses equipped with oversized tires or tracks ideal for oversnow travel. And with interior upgrades that make them more comfortable than ever before, they're perfect for a wintry—and unforgettable—ride through the park.

Regardless of who you book with, you'll have several amazing winter adventures to choose from. Head to Canyon Village and try Nordic skiing around the rim of the jaw-dropping Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone—featuring a completely frozen 308-foot waterfall. Or, take a tour to Old Faithful Village, where you can explore the diverse thermal features that make up the Upper Geyser Basin before heading back to Mammoth Hot Springs. Make it a long weekend by booking a couple nights at cozy Old Faithful Snow Lodge, which offers two crackling fires for guests to enjoy plus options for additional tours and ski drops that leave directly from the lodge.

As the gateway community with the closest access to Old Faithful Village, West Yellowstone offers the most snowcoach tour booking options. Whether you're headed for Old Faithful or Canyon Village, tours often include lunch and plenty of stops for checking out wildlife—which are often more abundant in the winter months, and certainly easier to spot against the snow! Book a tour at the West Yellowstone office of Yellowstone Vacations, Backcountry

Adventures , See Yellowstone Tours , Yellowstone Alpen Guides or Yellowstone Expeditions .

If you're staying at the park's North Entrance, book a private or group tour with Yellowstone Vacations in Gardiner. Your tour will include lunch and commentary from naturalist guides. Snowcoach tours are also available through Yellowstone National Park Lodges in Mammoth Hot Springs, five miles south of Gardiner inside park boundaries.

Wild Bison In Yellowstone National Park Traverse A Snow Covered Winter Landscape

Destination

Enjoy a catered experience of Yellowstone National Park’s interior geologic gems, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, amidst the backdrop of winter’s beauty.

  • Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
  • Snowcoach Excursion into the Interior
  • Waterfalls and Wintering Wildlife

Yellowstone National Park is a year-round gem, but it truly shines during the winter months. This magical season transforms the park into a mesmerizing wonderland. As you explore, you’ll witness the remarkable interplay between geothermal activity and the park’s volcanic history, with hot water bubbling up from geysers and hot springs. Towering cliffs, composed of basalt, obsidian, and rhyolite, offer a glimpse into the region’s rich geological past.

*Tour availability is based on snowcoach availability with our partner. We will verify availability before confirming the tour.

The entire landscape glistens with a pristine layer of ice and snow, providing a stunning contrast to the vibrant wildlife that thrives in this white wilderness. In winter, a significant portion of Yellowstone is inaccessible by vehicle. However, our specialized winter tours grant you access to these remote and restricted areas using specially designed vehicles capable of traversing the snow-covered terrain.

Our full-day snowcoach adventure, departing from West Yellowstone, is expertly guided by our knowledgeable naturalists. They tailor the experience to match the abilities and interests of our guests. Your journey begins with a comfortable ride in a Yellowstone Safari Co vehicle from your lodging to our departure point, located in West Yellowstone. From there, we embark on a captivating journey towards the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Throughout the day, our guides will provide insightful and passionate interpretations of the park’s wonders. Depending on weather conditions and your interests, they may lead short outdoor excursions, share captivating wildlife encounters, and offer explanations of unique geological features. We ensure that you are well taken care of during the trip, providing healthy and hearty snacks, a delectable picnic lunch, and the ultimate indulgence: steaming hot cocoa or coffee when you need it most.

Whether this marks your first or tenth visit to Yellowstone, experiencing it in winter promises unforgettable memories and pure enjoyment.

During this extraordinary tour, you’ll have the chance to observe North America’s largest mammals exhibiting fascinating winter behaviors as they adapt to the harsh conditions. Bison, elk, deer, moose, and sheep roam freely across valleys, gorges, and cliff sides. The skies come alive with the graceful flight of raptors like bald and golden eagles, falcons, and hawks, either perched on trees or soaring in search of their next meal. Predators like wolves, coyotes, and foxes are particularly active during winter, capitalizing on the vulnerability of their prey.

To enhance your wildlife viewing experience, our guides provide binoculars, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of these wild creatures from a safe and respectful distance. Yellowstone in winter is a realm of wonder and a testament to nature’s resilience, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Most incredible tour ever. Insane breathtaking views and wildlife magnified by best expert guide ever to make it even better. He knew every piece of information you could possibly ask and kept the tour beyond engaging and interesting. He spotted awesome animals from hundreds of meters away that we’d never spot on our own, set up spotting scopes on tripods and gave us binoculars to see them close, and then explained every cool tidbit of information in laymen’s terms in a way that kept me super captivated.

Snowmobile tours offer a more active and immersive experience, allowing guests to explore the park on snowmobiles. Yellowstone in Winter

Feb 27, 2023.

As November approaches, a dramatic transformation occurs- the days shorten, the temperatures drop, the chance of snow escalates, and eventually, over 200 miles of roadway in the park will close to regular vehicle traffic.  Fortunately, this does not mean the entire park is inaccessible.

Take a Snowcoach Through Yellowstone in the Winter

One of the two ways to explore yellowstone in the winter is by snowcoach. this is everything you need to know..

Mikaela Ruland

When snow blankets Yellowstone National Park, there’s only two ways to get into the heart of the park: by snowmobile or snowcoach.

In early November each year Yellowstone closes all but one road to normal vehicle traffic. As the snow begins to fly and cover our first national park, a different sort of vehicle gets ready to transport visitors through a winter wonderland. A snowcoach is a shuttle van either on extra large (picture a monster truck) tires or tracks like a snowmobile. These specially designed vehicles are perfect for navigating the park’s unplowed roads and, other than snowmobiles, are the only way to access the interior of the park in the winter. With big picture windows, you’ll be able to see all the sights from the park’s abundant winter wildlife to steaming geysers.

Snowcoaches are a great way to see the park since you’ll stay warm and cozy inside the vehicle, unlike a snowmobile tour where you’ll have to bundle up. Your driver will also be able to share fun facts about the park and easily point out wildlife as you drive. Tours range from half-day scenic drives to full-day excursions to packages where you’ll do both a scenic drive and ski or snowshoe in the park.

A snowcoach is also the only transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge , the park’s only hotel other than Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel , open in the winter (note: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will be closed winter 2022/23). A stay in the heart of the park in winter is magical. From spending the day skiing or snowshoeing past geysers to curling up next to the fire with a book to ice skating under the stars, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Yellowstone Snowcoach Options

West entrance tours.

Located in West Yellowstone, Mont. , the park’s West Entrance is closed to normal vehicles in the winter months, but is known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of the World.” You can take a guided snowmobile tour in the park from West Yellowstone, but you can also depart on a day tour from this town to see the park from the comfort of a snowcoach. These tour operators offer day trips into the park, usually to either Old Faithful or Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone :

See Yellowstone – seeyellowstone.com

Backcountry Adventures – backcountry-adventures.com

Yellowstone Vacations – www.yellowstonevacations.com

Yellowstone Expeditions (Ski camping tours) – yellowstoneexpeditions.com

South Entrance Tours

Yellowstone’s South Entrance is located closest to Jackson, Wyo. , a famous winter ski destination thanks to Jackson Hole Resort. Nearby Grand Teton National Park is also home to lots of winter fun including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. From Jackson, you can head north with one of these tour operators to spend the day seeing Yellowstone by snowcoach, or be dropped off at Old Faithful Snow Lodge for a stay:

Scenic Safaris – www.scenic-safaris.com

North Entrance Tours and Transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge

The North Entrance, just outside of Gardiner, Mont. , is where you’ll find the only year-round road open to normal vehicles through the park. In winter, you can drive plowed roads to the Mammoth Hot Springs area and through Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance where the tiny Montana towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City await. You can also book a snowcoach day tour into the park, or transportation to the only hotel inside the park besides Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel that offers winter lodging: Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

Yellowstone Vacations (day tours from Mammoth) – www.yellowstonevacations.com

Yellowstone National Park Lodges (day tours from Mammoth and Old Faithful, transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge) – www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/adventures/winter-adventures/

How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book a Snowcoach Tour?

If you’re using a snowcoach as transportation to the Snow Lodge, it’s best to book your ride as soon as you book your stay since there is only one company at the North Entrance and one company at the South Entrance that offers transportation.

Day tours are more flexible since there are more operators, but it’s best to book as far in advance as possible in order to ensure you get a seat. Last minute reservations may be available, but don’t count on them.

How Much Are Yellowstone Snowcoach Tours?

Yellowstone snowcoach tours range in price depending on which company and tour you choose. In Winter 2022/23 half-day scenic snowcoach tours could be found for less than $100 for adults and less than $50 for children. Transportation, including two pieces of luggage, between Mammoth and Old Faithful Snow Lodge cost $144 for adults and $72 for children each way for the 2022/23 season. While tipping is not required, it’s expected. Be prepared to tip your driver 15-20% in cash.

Be sure to note whether or not your snowcoach operator includes your park pass in your tour price. If they do not, you’ll need to purchase a pass in advance. On guided tours, a 7-day, annual or lifetime pass is only good for one person, so be sure to have a pass for each individual in your group. These passes cost $20 in 2022/23 for adults 16 and over. Children 15 and under are free.

What Do You Wear on a Snowcoach Tour?

While snowcoaches are heated, it’s important to be properly dressed for winter conditions as you’ll be entering and exiting the snowcoach in snowy and cold weather and will likely get out and explore at certain stops along the way.

Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable on the drive but quickly gear up to get out in the cold. A waterproof and insulated jacket, a warm hat, warm gloves and snow boots or other waterproof boots with good tread are recommended. Wool or synthetic fabrics are better than cotton for winter trips as they wick away moisture more quickly.

Mike was an AMAZING guide through yellowstone! He was extremely accommodating with us bringing our 10 month old daughter, constantly checking to make sure she was ok. Mike checked all the boxes of what we were hoping when visiting Yellowstone - my husband wanted to go on a little hike, we wanted to see wildlife, and he showed us some great views! He was so knowledgeable about the park and would throw out so many fun facts! Mike provided coffee, fresh fruits, and sandwiches for lunch, too! My husband and I both agreed that without Mike, and had we gone ourselves, we would've had a way different experience and probably not as much fun - we wouldn't have even brought binoculars, but Mike has a scope to see the wildlife crystal clear. Speaking of, he even documents your trip with videos and pictures of the wildlife - he even let my daughter press the button to take a picture with his scope I could go on and on about how wonderful of a time we had. Oh! And he mentioned going to the Grizzly and Wolf sanctuary in west Yellowstone and it was equally as amazing! It really brought everything almost full circle from seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild, to being able to get close up with them at the sanctuary! We can't thank Mike enough for everything

Montana Yellowstone tours is a fantastic guide service. The tours are tailored to what you want to see and do and boy, there's lots to see. We did a single day hike that became wildlife watching, history, geology and of course a great hike with a view of some off the beaten path geothermal. Mike, our guide and the owner is a great guy and very knowledgeable. safety is always in mind as well as a great experience. Mike is a great wildlife guide, fisherman and outdoor enthusiast. Do yourself and your family a favor and hire with Montana Yellowstone Tours.

This is an exceptional Yellowstone tour. Michael will tailor your tour so you enjoy every minute. From the much appreciated breakfast to get the day started, the comfortable transportation and the fantastic sights of Yellowstone - this was a day to remember. Michael is knowledgeable of the park and its many wildlife inhabitants. He will show you everything he can find - remember it is the animals who ultimately decide what you see of them! The natural beauty of Yellowstone is all around and you can see as much or as little as you wish.

LOOKING FOR ANOTHER WAY SEE YELLOWSTONE?

Snowcoach Tours are one of the most popular ways to tour Yellowstone in winter. If that sounds like an appealing way to see Yellowstone National Park in winter, please also consider one of our Snowcoach Tours!

All snowmobile rentals require pre-payment by a Visa®, MasterCard®, Discover®, or American Express® credit card, which will be billed for the full cost of each rental, including tax. Unapproved credit card charges will result in reservation cancellation.

There is a $25 Damage Agreement per day per snowmobile with a $750 deductible. Theft insurance is the responsibility of the renter.

Cancellations must be received no later than 14 days before your scheduled rental to receive a refund. Cancellations or changes received less than 14 days before your arrival, including no-shows, will result in forfeiture of your refund. This cancellation policy is strictly enforced with no exceptions.

All snowmobile tours leave from West Yellowstone, and will meet on-site at the shop you booked through:

  • Bookings made through Yellowstone Vacation Tours meet at 415 Yellowstone Avenue, right next door to the Holiday Inn® West Yellowstone.
  • Bookings made through Two Top Snowmobile meet at 645 Gibbon Avenue, on the corner of Gibbon and Iris.

You will definitely need some durable snowmobile clothing to protect your body from the elements. We have the following equipment available to rent for all riders:

  • Snowmobile boots
  • Snowmobile suit

A DOT-approved helmet is included with your rental.

Winter clothing can be reserved when you call to book your tour, and you will then be sized on-site when you arrive. With the winter gear mentioned, most riders will be comfortable enough wearing jeans, a long sleeve shirt and thermal underwear. If you’d like to dress warmer you are certainly welcome to, but we suggest dressing in layers so you can better regulate your own personal temperature.

All of our snowmobiles are automatics, so you don’t need to worry about shifting gears or doing anything crazy. Before your tour departs, your guide will give you a full orientation on how each of the simple controls work, as well as what to expect while riding in town and inside the park.

Just follow your guide’s lead. When you ride through Yellowstone National Park, all snowmobile riders must stay single file. That way, your guide is leading the “train,” always in front. If the guide slows down or stops, just do what they do and listen for their instruction.

There are three items that we recommend all snowmobile riders purchase or bring with you prior to meeting up for your tour; some warm ski gloves, a balaclava, and a boxed lunch.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own ski gloves. We do have a few loaner pairs available, but sizes and availability are not guaranteed.

Balaclavas are those ninja mask-style head gear that you may have seen before, and will provide some much-appreciated warmth to the one area of your body that will otherwise be left partially exposed — your face! We sell balaclavas on-site at Yellowstone Vacation Tours if you don’t have your own.

Additionally, food service inside the park is extremely limited during the winter months, and since this is a full day tour, you would do well to purchase a boxed lunch before you head out. Boxed lunches can be reserved directly through Yellowstone Vacation Tours when you call in to book your tour, but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance so they can be ready for pick-up on the morning of your tour.

A backpack might be a good idea, especially if you are purchasing the recommended boxed lunches. A limited number of backpacks are available on-site, or you are welcome to bring your own. Wool socks are also a good investment for outdoor winter activities. You will also need a Park Pass for your Snowmobile Tour (one pass per snowmobile).
