Trek-Segafredo men’s team and its all-new women’s team will be wearing Koo eyewear for the next two seasons in a tie-up with Kask ’s performance eyewear brand.

Trek-Segafredo’s men’s line-up includes new signing Richie Porte as well as John Degenkolb and Bauke Mollema. Meanwhile, the 13-rider women’s team includes Lizzie Deignan and and Elisa Longo Borghini , as well as Letizia Paternoste r, who won the first stage of the Women’s Tour Down Under last week.

Koo says that both teams will be able to choose between its Open Cube and Orion models. The former focuses on ventilation, while the latter uses anti-reflective, gradient coloured lenses for visual acuity. They will also be wearing the California model, when not riding and for podium presentations.

Koo’s decision to pair with Trek-Segafredo was, says Ylenia Battistello, Koo Cycling Brand Manager, driven by its search for a suitable opportunity for WorldTour presence.

“Trek-Segafredo ultimately attracted as one of the strongest male and female squads, representing dedication and fearless ambition across the board. The US market appeal was also a significant driving force for Koo. We are enormously proud to work with such an important team with a long history in the world of cycling,” she commented.

Koo sunglasses are aimed at the premium end of the market, with the Open Cube retaining at £174.99, the Orion at £159.99 and the California from £119.99. All come with Zeiss lenses, which are interchangeable in the Open Cube and Orion, with seven different lens colour options for each.

They also come in a wide range of frame colours and small and medium sizes, to fit different face widths. The side arms can be set to three different angles in the Open Cube and also have a folding pivot design for more compact storage.

Check out Trek-Segafredo’s Trek Emonda for 2023

First Published Jan 31, 2023

The Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s teams will be dividing the vast majority of their time between the Trek Madone SLR aero road bike and this lightweight Trek Émonda SLR in 2023. Let’s take a closer look at the Émonda…

The current Émonda has been around for over two years now – doesn’t time fly? – with Trek calling this incarnation its fastest-climbing bike ever.

> Check out our story from when the current Trek Emonda was launched

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 27.jpeg

The Émonda has always been the lightweight road bike in Trek’s range, but the US brand also focused on aerodynamics in the development of the latest model.

> Trek releases radical Madone SLR, its “fastest road race bike ever”

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 13.jpeg

The designers say they spent most time working on the front end of the bike – the bar/stem, head tube and down tube – because that’s where you can make most aero gains, testing both with and without a water bottle in place.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 28.jpeg

Trek says that the flagship Émonda SLR platform is 60 seconds per hour faster than its predecessor on flat roads – in other words, on the older bike it would take you 61 minutes to ride as far as you could in 60 minutes on the newer one – and 18 seconds per hour faster on an 8% gradient (Trek’s notional rider upon which these figures are based is 70kg and puts out 350 watts for the hour).

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 23.jpeg

Trek says that the Émonda SLR isn’t as aerodynamically efficient as its Madone platform but that it's marginally ahead of the Domane endurance bike.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 8.jpeg

Using deep-section tubes adds weight over round tubes so the current Émonda SLR that Trek-Segafredo riders use is slightly heavier than the previous model, but the frame still comes in under 700g. The designers say that the slight weight penalty is still worth it for the net gain in speed in most circumstances thanks to improved aero efficiency.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 18.jpeg

In order to hit its weight, strength and stiffness targets for this bike, Trek says it had to use a new kind of carbon fibre within the layup – which it calls 800 Series OCLV carbon.

Trek isn’t keen on giving away too many secrets but says that from a fibre-type perspective, OCLV 800 is 30% stronger than the material it uses for its OCLV 700.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 7.jpeg

Trek-Segafredo riders use handlebars, stems, seat posts and saddles from Trek’s in-house Bontrager brand.

The bar and stem are separate units here and the hoses for the hydraulic disc brakes run externally before entering the frame at the top of the head tube.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 16.jpeg

There are no gear cables or wires to worry about because Trek-Segafredo riders use SRAM Red eTap AXS groupsets with wireless shifting. They also use Quarq SRAM Red AXS Power Meters.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 10.jpeg

Team riders can choose between 48/35, 50/37, 52/39 and 54/41-tooth chainsets and 10-28 or 10-33 12-speed cassettes.

> Check out our SRAM Red eTap AXS First Ride Review

The wheels are from Bontrager: RSL37, RSL51 or RSL62, depending on the terrain, conditions, and rider preference. The number in the name refers to the rim depth in millimetres. All of these wheels use DT Swiss 240s internals with Ratchet EXP 36-point engagement.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 14.jpeg

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres. The team uses tubeless, clinchers, and tubulars.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 9.jpeg

The team use Time XPro-10 pedals, Time being a brand that’s now owned by SRAM, and Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and Roam bike computers.

Interesting to see the pro team bikes are sans integrated bars. I know people who have started to get replacement bars from trek after the recall. I decided to keep mine instead of getting the temp replacement but to see the team with a different set up raises eyebrows.

It's possible that the reason is that many pros will use 150-170mm stems with narrow bars, it's not worth tooling up to manufacture the whole assembly for that size, which hardly anyone will buy, whereas it's possibly cheaper/easier to do smaller runs of longer stem & narrow bars separately.

Trek and Segafredo: Behind the combination of bikes and coffee

Three-year sponsorship gives the team a bigger budget and a new direction

The Trek-Segafredo sponsorship seemed like a perfect marriage between two important global brands at the presentation in Treviso on Thursday.

Cancellara confirms Giro d'Italia participation

  • Segafredo deal will allow Trek to fill hole left by Cancellara's retirement in 2017

The US-registered team and the global coffee company share the same red, white and black brand colours, and both Trek and Massimo Zanetti’s holding company - which owns Segafredo and several other coffee brands, each started as family businesses.

Trek started in a barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, while Massimo Zanetti, now 67, took over the family-owned coffee roasting business in Treviso in the early 70s. Via a series of takeovers, tie-ups and franchises, the company has grown to become one of the biggest in the world, producing 92,000 tonnes of coffee a year, with a turnover of 1.3 billion Euro. 35 per cent of the company was recently floated on the Milan stock market in 2015, raising over 200 million Euro and valuing the company at close to 540 million Euro ($615 million).

Zanetti proudly announced the Segafredo cycling sponsorship during a meeting with global brand managers. Many are cyclists and welcomed the news, pushing to pose for selfies with Fabian Cancellara and the new jersey. Segafredo is the first major Italian company to sponsor a cycling team for several years, with many in Italian cycling hoping it will open the door to other new sponsors after years of crisis.

“I’ve been lucky in life. Now I hope to give some good luck to the Trek-Segafredo team,” Zanetti said during the presentation. “I’m a man of sport. My father taught us all to love sport and practiced a lot of sport. I live in the province of Treviso, where highest number of people in Italy ride bikes.”

Zanetti confirmed to Cyclingnews that the brand will remain a co-title sponsor with team owners Trek for the next three years, with an option for a further two years. The arrival of Segafredo will boost the team’s budget by between 30 and 40 per cent, and allow the signing of a Grand Tour team leader and perhaps a Classics contender to replace Fabian Cancellara. Both Peter Sagan and Greg Van Avermaet could be available for 2017.

Zanetti opted to join forces with Trek rather than create a new team with Bjarne Riis .

“We were negotiating with Riis after he’d left Tinkoff, to create our own new team. But we didn’t want to be directly involved in the management of the team At the same time, we spoke to Luca Guercilena at Trek. We realised we had the best fit with Trek, and things went from there,” he revealed.

“I love cycling and ride at the weekends, but we’ve also got to think of the business aspects and the return on investment. I’m convinced that cycling gives a good return. Cycling is one of the most popular sports in the world and is followed by millions of fans, who will now hopefully drink our coffee.”

“Our project is to help the team grow as a global team and sign some of the biggest riders in the peloton. It’s true that we’d like to sign Nibali. Let's hope so. It’d be a dream come true for me.”

Long term backing, a bigger budget and possibly a new direction

Zanetti and the Vice President of Trek Bicycles Joe Vadeboncoeur completed the deal to form Trek-Segafredo with a handshake. While Trek has given up being the sole title sponsor of the team, it has gained some long-term backing and secured a bigger budget.

“Segafredo’s sponsorship doesn’t double the budget, but it’s significant. More than the investment, it’s the duration that is important," Vadeboncoeur told Cyclingnews. "They’re in for the long term, which allows us to target the team in different directions. Fabian Cancellara’s contract ends in 2016 and so after that, we have the option to point in a different direction if we choose to. If we want to chase Grand Tours after 2016 now were able to do that.”

Vadeboncoeur is not afraid to admit that Nibali is on their list of riders for 2017.

“He’s a huge talent, a great rider and has a lot of years left in his career. He’s Italian, and so Segafredo would like it. We would like it, and Luca has a good relationship with him,” he said. “At the moment, we don’t know if he’s going separate from his current team after 2016, but I think it would be fun to build a squad around him.”

Zanetti is expecting some important results in 2016 before the team is somehow rebuilt and redirected after Cancellara’s career ends. Cancellara won the 1999 Junior world time trial title in Treviso and raced with the Fassa Bortolo team that is based nearby. Zanetti is hoping Cancellara can complete his career and kick off Segafredo’s sponsorship in style by winning Milan-San Remo and then pulling on the maglia rosa at the Giro d’Italia.

“He’s promised me he’d bring the pink jersey back to Italy after the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia in the Netherlands. Let’s hope he keeps his word,” Zanetti said.

History of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.

In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.

In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.

In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.

More Historical Facts…

In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.

In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.

Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century

From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.

After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.

On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.

By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.

During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.

From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.

On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.

Ulyanovsk after the Second World War

In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.

In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.

With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.

On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. The large number of casualties is explained by the fact that at the time of the collision, most of the passengers were in the movie theater and on the dance floor on the upper deck, which was completely destroyed by the collision with the bridge girder.

On July 17, 1987, the 600,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. The city’s tourist significance declined sharply after the collapse of the USSR. In 1998, Ulyanovsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

In the 2000s, there was a discussion about the reverse renaming of the city to Simbirsk, but the residents of Ulyanovsk for the most part did not support this proposal. In 2009, the arches of the old railway bridge were replaced. On November 24, 2009, the Presidential Bridge across the Volga was opened, the second longest in Russia, with a length of about 6 kilometers.

Ulyanovsk - Features

From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.

Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.

This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).

The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.

Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.

It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.

Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.

The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.

The Trek-Segafredo spirit soars in final mountains

Ciccone finishes 3rd and Lopez keeps Best Young Rider lead in Stage 20 of the Giro

Trek-Segafredo ended the final road stage of the 2022 Giro d’Italia with the same flair they have shown for the entire three weeks.

Stage 20 offered one last opportunity for victory, plus a white jersey and top 10 in the general classification to defend, and the Team was ready for a final big performance.

Giulio Ciccone once again fought he way into the breakaway, while behind the Team rallied around Juan Pedro Lopez over the last of the Giro’s mountains.

From the 14 men that formed the escape group, only two outplayed another gritty showing by Giulio.

“I really wanted to win the stage today and I think I had the legs to do it, but it was a tactical game in then key moment of the race and unfortunately I was caught by this,” explained Ciccone. “I think we all underestimated Covi when he attacked. He rode very strong and deserved to win today. I have a bit of regret because I think I could have played it differently and could have been in the game for the win.

“After Covi went, we looked at each other too much. Covi took too much of a gap and that was our tactical mistake.”

One determined rider.

While tactics may have gotten the better of Cicco in the final stage, overall he was pleased with his Giro.

“I am happy of my performance today, I think I rode strong,” he added. “I was able in this final week to go on the attack – my condition has grown so I could go and try and win stages and that makes me happy. Compared to how I approached the Giro with sickness, in the end I can be satisfied for what I have done.”

Cicco left everything on the last mountain of the Giro.

Meanwhile, in the peloton behind, Trek-Segafredo was protecting its white jersey, and taking the best young rider to the final climb with as much energy as possible. Still, Juanpe had to dig into his reserves.

“It was a very hard stage today, I am very tired, and of course after 20 days of the Giro,” admitted Juanpe. “Today my teammates helped me keep the pace, the right pace and the right position in the peloton, and to be there when the selection started. In the end it was everyone for himself amongst the big riders, but almost to the very end I had someone by my side. This was amazing to have this feeling of leader and to have this confidence from my teammates.”

“The final climb was so hard, and I had to defend by myself with the remaining energy I had in the legs,” he continued. “Of course, I am very happy! Tomorrow is the last step to take this jersey and make my dream coming true. Now I need to recover and rest to be ready for tomorrow.”

The revelation of the 2022 Giro? We think so!

How the young Spaniard has found the energy needed to battle for white and maintain his 9th GC in these final days after 10 grueling days battling for pink is anyone’s guess. There’s no doubt that Juanpe has shown resoluteness that extends his experience.

“This Giro has been amazing for me since day one: the attack on Etna, the pink jersey, now the white – it has been a challenge every day. This is my first Giro, so I really needed and was thankful for the support from my teammates with experience.  Even today they showed great confidence in me.

“I really want to know and enjoy the final stage tomorrow in Verona and finish in the arena will be great.  Of course, I share this incredible experience with my teammates who have been amazing since the beginning, supporting me on the road and after as well.”

Lots of emotions on the final climb of a 3-week race. What a Team! @giuliocicco1 and @juanpedrolopez 🤗 🙌 #WeAreATeam #Giro #magliabianche pic.twitter.com/KTiHcOSfG7 — Trek-Segafredo (@TrekSegafredo) May 28, 2022
