The Levellers (formed in 1988) is a British alternative rock, folk and punk band that subtly incorporates Celtic music traditions into their politically-fervent musical output, hailing from Brighton, England, UK.

Origianlly comprised of vocalist and guitarist Mark Chadwick, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Alan Miles, bassist Jeremy Cunningham, drummer Charlie Heather, and fiddle player John Sevink, The Levellers were formed in 1988. The following year the group issued a pair of cassettes on their own Hag label, “An Agreement of the People” and “All the Free Commons of England”, which earned the group a sizeable national following. The band’s subsequently release, the 1989 EP “Carry Me”, was led by the singles “Carry Me” and “England My Home”, both of which generated interest for The Levellers after being played on BBC Radio 2. The group toured in support of the record, before releasing the EP “Outside/Inside” towards the tail-end of 1989.

Due to these successes The Levellers signed with the French label Musidisc, who issued the band’s debut, platinum-selling record, “A Weapon Called the Word” in 1990. Led by the single “World Freak Show”, the album exposed the band to a national audience despite not reaching the UK charts. Following a move to China Records in 1991, The Levellers released their sophomore album “Levelling the Land” the same year, which charted at No. 14 on the UK Albums Chart. Aided by the No. 1 indie chart single “One Way”, the band supported the release with a sold-out European tour.

The full-length “Levellers” arrived in 1993, peaking at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart but also found the charts in the Netherlands and Sweden. Two years later the UK No. 1 album “Zeitgeist” was released, marking The Levellers’ most successful album to date. Led by the singles ”Hope St.” and “Fantasy”, the record established the group as alternative rock powerhouses in Europe, however failed to make an impression in the U.S. The live album “Headlights, White Lines, Black Tar Rivers (Best Live)” arrived in 1996 showcasing the group’s well-received live shows, followed by the No. 5 charting album “Mouth to Mouth” in 1997. The Levellers’ last release on China Records came in 2000 with “Hello Pig”, which charted at No. 28 on the UK Albums Chart.

Following period of inactivity for the group, in 2003 The Levellers returned to issue the studio album, “Green Blade Rising”, which was seen as a return to form. In 2005 the band were album to maintain this momentum with the inspiring “Truth & Lies”, which, like all of the group’s releases was toured extensively in support of. The politically-charged “Letters from the Underground” followed in 2008, after which Chadwick released the solo album “All the Peices” before returning to The Levellers in 2012 to released their 10th studio album “Static on the Airwaves”.

Live reviews

Brighton, England based band, Levellers, have been around for quite some time now; in fact they’ve been playing together since the late 80s. Because of their long presence in the music industry and from jamming together, they are able to take their music chemistry and show everyone how well they blend in a live show.

With what is probably one of the coolest openings to a show, the band has a man playing a didgeridoo, with his face and body painted. You then slowly hear the sounds of the guitar getting louder and louder, until you hear the cymbal start up with the beat. The buildup results in the stage starting to light up and everyone in the band joining in. Once they start playing the songs you know and love, you can’t help but jam along! They have a lot of synchronized lighting for their show, but their personalities definitely shine through all the staging. The crowd is always full of long time fans, who rock out and sing along. Every so often, between songs, the band will say something to the crowd, whether it be a thank you or an introduction of the next song they are about to play. A show that is enjoyable to so many people of so many different age groups.

Absolutely bril-li-ant night! Right up there with my best concerts ever attended.

Night of firsts too.

First time I saw the Levs in quite an intimate setting (Cloud Nine in Tivoli/Vredenburg Utrecht only holds a couple of hundred I reckon). First seated concert (audience AND the band) except for the encore. Was a bit apprehensive about that, but the atmosphere was SO superb! It was like watching them play in your living room.

AND first time I heard them play acoustic, with an extra string section of 3.

The quieter acoustic versions of familiar songs with the extra strings .... WOW! They played nearly all of their acoustic album We The Collective. Elation (Matt on keyboard, the strings, one of the girls on the strings on backing vocals ... actually brought tears to my eyes. That was a first in many, many years of going to concerts too!

PS. what's with (nearly) all of the band on bare feet?

Got to the gig on time just to see The Levellers, the tickets said 7pm doors open when they actually opened at 6.30! Totally missed The Selecter who I've wanted to see since 1979! Anyhow I've seen The Levs quite a few times and they never disappoint. This was their "Greatest Hits" tour and it was definitely all killer no filler. They even brought a bagpiper on around the middle of the gig which obviously goes down well in Scotland. Sometimes when bands do this it can be cheesy but on this occasion it fitted to their sound very well. If you like good raucous Irish tinged music similar to The Pogues,Saw Doctors or The Waterboys this is for you. Go and get a ticket!

The band and support were great. Unfortunately for us, the fact that the ticket said doors open at 4 was misleading as we were frustrated to then find out that the music wasn’t starting for another 2 and 3 quarter hours. I gather the idea was to get people drinking, but we don’t drink so very frustrating. We did try to phone the castle in the day to find out but it was shut. Maybe doors open at 4, music starts at 6:45 written on the ticket would be better. Maybe there would be less people falling over and passed out on the floor. Anyway, great music, great venue.

Levellers were fantastic as ever. They had an extended acoustic band who were awesome, and although I’m not used to them performing at a seated gig (we are usually dancing like lunatics!) it was a great different experience. They played new & old songs, they kept the energy & flow in the room & are the same amazing guys they have always been. Roundhouse is my fave venue & did not dissapoint, friendly staff & well organised & great sound.

Levellers always a great band & amazing night thank you

I first listened to The Levellers at age 18 and 20 years later...still enjoining their music. I've seen this band 141 times so no argue this is a good live band. Every gig is a party and everyone is having a good time, singing, dancing and laughing. The lyrics are great and have a meaning. The Levellers stand for what they sing. And of course the concert in Cologne was another brilliant evening.

After last seeing The Levellers in 1993, it was great to see that they remain as current now as they were then. Here in Melbourne there was a mix of the old country faithful, and new Australian listeners who weren't even born when Levelling the land was first released!

Great concert, all the hits! No single highlights, it was all fantastic!

Seeing the Levellers perform the whole of "Levelling the Land" on its 25th anniversary at Brixton Academy was just like being back in 1991.

The energy and angst from the band had everyone bouncing up & down & punching the air to every call.

Superb evening had by everyone fortunate enough to have been there

edgwarehoops’s profile image

Had a brilliant night, the Levellers were amazing as always and the venue was easy to get to from the train. The air conditioning could of been better as it was very hot in there and next time will get an end seat as it was a bit cramped stuck in the middle but overall pretty good night

Absolutely fab gig last night. This was my first trip to Brixton Academy and I'll be back again for Pixies on Tuesday and on the 15th for Primal Scream. What a way to start a month of gigs. The performance of Levelling the Land was phenomenal!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

More information about levellers.

Levellers are still going strong after over 30 years in the game. They have long been, and still are, one of the best live bands around and in 2020 they released new studio album ‘Peace’ which entered the UK Official Album Charts at #8 - the band's highest charting entry since 1997's Mouth to Mouth reached #5 and improving on previous release We the Collective's #12 position in 2018.

The band celebrated the 30th anniversary of their seminal platinum-selling, album Levelling The Land in 2021.  During the summer of 1991 the album redefined the UK’s musical landscape. Levelling the Land features the hit singles One Way, 15 Years and Far From Home plus The Game, Liberty Song, Sell Out, Another Man’s Cause, Riverflow, Boatman and the incendiary Battle Of The Beanfield. -----

Spring 2025 Acoustic Tour

After two highly acclaimed acoustic tours and albums in recent years, the Levellers Collective have announced a new 17-date tour in Spring 2025 at theatres and venues around the country plus a Live Album & DVD.

The Collective live shows, and albums, came about after the Levellers decided to do something a bit different with their extensive back catalogue in 2018. Together with members of fellow Brighton group The Moulettes, they went on to record two albums radically reworking their songs - with producer John Leckie (We The Collective) and Sean Lakeman (Together All The Way).

The new acoustic arrangements of those Levellers songs, old and new, can now also be seen and heard on a new Live Album & DVD which was recorded in 2023 at London’s iconic Hackney Empire. The film captures the spirit of the Levellers as never seen before as multiple cameras were positioned onstage for the recording and the result is a truly privileged vantage point.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Every single Glastonbury headliner by year – with some shocking last-minute switcharoos

author image

(L to R) Sinead O'Connor, Elton John, Beyonce, David Bowie, Stormzy

Glastonbury Festival is legendary, pulling in some of the biggest names in music throughout its 52-year legacy from David Bowie to Sir Elton John .

Last year’s epic, two-hour set from the Rocket Man pulled in a massive audience at Worthy Farm – and in TV viewers at home .

Looking back at the incredible headliners the festival has seen, it’s no surprise even icons have to wait their turn – unless you’re Coldplay who has played five times and now holds the record for most times as headliner.

Follow the latest news from Glastonbury in our 2024 live blog

Come rain or shine , Glasto is usually held annually in June except for the occasional fallow year to let the ground recover (or during a global pandemic).

Ever since the Somerset music festival opened its doors in 1970 , it’s pulled in some massive names, especially for a gig that only cost £1 to get into originally.

While fans at Worthy Farm are set to hear Sza, Dua Lipa, and Coldplay , those of us missing out are looking fondly back at the headliners who’ve come before…

Crowds of people gather in front of the main Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury

The full list of Glastonbury headliners from 1970 to 2023

1970 – T. Rex

Tyrannosaurus Rex (soon to be T.Rex) took the first-ever top spot for the launch of Glastonbury Festival after The Kinks pulled out.

1971 – David Bowie

Ziggy Stardust became a headliner after Pink Floyd cancelled and, despite his icon status, he would only headline one more time.

1972 to 1977 – No Glasto!

1978 – No headliner

This one is known as the ‘impromptu’ festival with no headliners as such.

1979 – Tim Blake and Peter Gabriel

1981 – Ginger Baker, Hawkwind, and Taj Mahal

1982 – Van Morrison, Jackson Browne

1983 – Curtis Mayfield, UB40

1984 – Weather Report, Black Uhuru and The Smiths

1985 – Echo & The Bunnymen, Joe Cocker and The Boomtown Rats

The Style Council and The Pogues also performed but didn’t get the top spot.

Robert Smith, lead singer of British band The Cure, performs

1986 – The Psychedelic Furs, Level 42, and The Cure

Festival goers could also see Madness and Simply Red, with tickets costing less than £20.

1987 – The Communards, Elvis Costello and Van Morrison

1989 – Suzanne Vega, Elvis Costello and Van Morrison

This year saw some firsts with the first consecutive headliners, as the festival skipped 1988, plus Suzanne Vega as the first-ever female headliner 12 Glastos in!

1990 – The Cure, Happy Mondays and Sinead O’Connor

1992 – Carter USM, Youssou N’Dour and Shakespeare’s Sister

1993 – The Black Crowes, Christy Moore and Lenny Kravitz

Red Hot Chilli Peppers were set in the headline slot but decided to drop out of the then £58 festival.

1994 – Levellers, Peter Gabriel and Elvis Costello

Lower on the listing were some truly incredible talents and future headliners with Johnny Cash, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Blur, Oasis, and Bjork all performing at the festival.

1995 – Pulp, Oasis, and The Cure

1997 – Ash, The Prodigy, and Radiohead

The Prodigy's Keith Flint at Glastonbury Festival in 2009

1998 – Primal Scream, Pulp and Blur

1999 – Skunk Anansie, REM, and Manic Street Preachers

This year saw two Glastonbury debuts from future Pyramid Stage headliners Muse and Coldplay.

2000 – Travis, The Chemical Brothers and David Bowie

2002 – Rod Stewart, Stereophonics and Coldplay

2003 – Moby, REM, and Radiohead

2004 – Muse, Oasis, and Sir Paul McCartney

Bellamy, Muse’s guitarist, gave the band’s headlining performance some extra spark when he smashed his guitar on stage.

Singer Chris Martin of the rock band, Coldplay, performs on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury

2005 – Basement Jaxx, The White Stripes, and Coldplay

Way before we were all singing Padam Padam, Kylie Minogue was set to headline but cancelled last minute. This year also saw The Killers perform and the return of Elvis Costello.

2006 – Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and The Who

All first-time headliners this year but elsewhere icon Adele was chasing pavements, 10 years before taking the headline spot.

2008 – Kings of Leon, The Verve and (a controversial choice) Jay Z

2009 – Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Blur

2010 – Muse, Stevie Wonder and Gorillaz

Beyonce headlining Glastonbury festival in 2011

2011 – Coldplay, U2 and Beyonce

While Coldplay returned to the festival for the umpteenth time, U2 managed to nab a headline after dropping out the year before (replaced by Gorillaz). Beyonce was the first solo female headliner since Sinead O’Connor and only the third solo female ever.

2013 – Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys and The Rolling Stones

2014 – Arcade Fire, Kasabian and Metallica

Dolly Parton was also here this year and pulled in a massive crowd despite not headlining.

2015 – Kanye West, Florence & The Machine, and The Who

Florence only took the top spot after the Foo Fighters dropped out and Ye proved another controversial choice.

2016 – Muse, Coldplay and Adele

Adele performs on The Pyramid Stage on day 2 of the Glastonbury Festival in 2016

2017 – Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran

2019 – Stormzy, The Killers and The Cure

2020 – Kendrick Lamar, Sir Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift

Only it never happened because as we all remember, the world was put on pause in the global pandemic.

Sir Paul and Taylor have reunited though, at her Eras Tour in London while Kendrick featured on her track Bad Blood. This lineup would have been legendary though.

2022 – Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Sir Paul McCartney

In a slight switch-up of the promised 2020 headliners, Billie became the youngest-ever Glasto headliner while Sir Paul took the title of oldest-ever headliner.

2023 – Arctic Monkeys, Guns N’ Roses, and Sir Elton John

A double debut from two icons here – both Guns N’ Roses and Sir Elton had never headlined before.

2024 – Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and Sza

Yes, Coldplay again. It’s no secret that this year’s line-up caused a little controversy with fans complaining.

However, it is also one for the history books as it marks the first time two headline slots have been taken up by female performers – it only took 54 years!

And that’s everything right up to this year, fingers crossed the weekend goes well and both Dua Lipa and Sza can make their iconic Pyramid Stage debuts.

Ikadai: I was the kid who imitated Captain Tsubasa

Risa Ikadai discusses why she swapped football for futsal, Japan’s morale-boosting upset of Spain and their Philippines 2025 hopes.

levellers tour 2024

The first FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup will take place in 2025

Risa Ikadai is Japan’s star player

She discusses their goals with FIFA

It was a quintessentially bittersweet moment. Risa Ikadai sat down to watch the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011™ final alone. USA, she knew, were the overwhelming favourites to beat Japan. They almost did triumph – in normal – and extra-time. Despite seeming exhausted, however, Aya Miyama, Homare Sawa and the Nadeshiko summoned their inimitable resilience to score late levellers in both periods. The USWNT had won both their previous shootouts in the competition, but Ikadai’s Urawa Reds team-mate Saki Kumagai ignored the mental mind games of Hope Solo, smashed the ball into the top corner and completed a 3-1 victory on penalties. It was, only months after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, one of the greatest days in Japanese sporting history.

levellers tour 2024

“When I saw Japan come from behind and win the World Cup, I was very impressed and delighted,” Ikadai, who was 22 at the time, told FIFA. “But it was also a very frustrating for me. I desperately wanted to be on that stage. Seeing Japan play like that, I realised that I wasn’t good enough.” Ikadai considered other careers, but nothing appealed to her. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve been kicking a ball,” she explained. “I played under the influence of my older brother. I was the kind of kid who imitated Captain Tsubasa and took the ball everywhere I went! “I always had a really strong desire to represent the Japan women’s national team. Every decision I made was centred on that. I played for Japan at university level but despite playing at the top level until I was 29, I never got called up by the senior national team. “Eventually, I felt I no longer had a chance of making it, so I decided to retire from football. I still wanted to kick a ball around – I still had that Captain Tsubasa in me – so I started playing futsal."

levellers tour 2024

Ikadai took to the sport like a duck to water. “Futsal gave me a new purpose,” she said. “My goal was to win the Asian Games. That was the biggest title possible. “However, due to coronavirus, the Games were postponed several times. I was in my 30s and worried I’d never get the chance. Fortunately my friends helped me work on becoming a top futsal player.”

Ikadai has indubitably managed that. Amazingly, she has won the Japanese futsal league’s last five MVP awards and is the go-to player on the national team. And to her sheer delight, the birth of the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup™ gave her a bigger – a much bigger – platform to aim for. “When I heard that the World Cup was going to be held, I felt I had a stage to aim for as a futsal player,” the 35-year-old, who rates Brazilian Emilly as magnificent, said. “It’s not the stage only I have been longing for – it’s special for everyone. “The confirmation of the Philippines as the host country of the World Cup has made the World Cup more realistic for me. I think, for Japan, there are many positive aspects to having the tournament in Asia, such as shorter travel time and less time difference. At my age, with the risk of injury, each year is a challenge. I want to make this World Cup the last challenge.”

levellers tour 2024

Japan are ninth on the first FIFA Futsal Women’s World Ranking, but they recently stunned second-placed Spain 2-0 at the Fafe Tournament, Nene Inoue and Anna Amishiro getting the goals. It followed defeats by fellow powerhouses Brazil and Portugal. “Winning the match against Spain was an important result for Japan women's futsal and gave us a great confidence boost,” said Ikadai. “However, the matches against Portugal and Brazil reminded us of the standard of the world’s top-level side.

levellers tour 2024

“We feel there is still a gap, as shown by the score. We need to think about how we can fill that gap and work on what we can do to beat those sides. To do this, I think it’s important to play at a high level and in many matches on a regular basis. In order to compete with the world’s top teams, I think we have to prepare ourselves to reach a higher level. “We still have one year until the tournament, so all Japanese players must work hard every day to improve their performance. I would like to work hard on my own training on a daily basis so that not only Japanese futsal fans but many others can look forward to the first World Cup. I believe Japan can compete with the best in the world.”
