5 Perfect Arkansas Road Trip Cities

A rkansas is a hidden gem in the heart of America that has so much to offer. This state has something for every traveler, from incredible natural beauty to cultural attractions and fantastic cuisine. If you’re planning a road trip, you won’t regret adding Arkansas to your itinerary. In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to five perfect Arkansas road trip cities that will leave you with lasting memories.

1. Bentonville

Bentonville is a must-visit for anyone on an Arkansas road trip who loves art, architecture, and history. It is home to the famous Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which houses an impressive collection of American art, including works by Warhol, Chihuly, Wiley (my fave!), and Rockwell.

Crystal Bridges is set on a sprawling 120-acre park with stunning walking trails. There is a Frank Lloyd Wright house available for tours.

I recommend staying at the 21c Museum Hotel , an art museum hotel with nearly 100 contemporary art installations, which you’ll encounter as you explore the property. For breakfast, I would eat at The Hive inside the hotel.

Try the Hive Breakfast, with two eggs, sorghum sausage, grits, and toast. Yum!

For dinner, check out The Preacher’s Son every night but Sunday. It is an excellent restaurant serving delicious food inside a former Gothic Revival church. Start your meal with creamy burrata, and finish with panna cotta.

The do-not-miss in Bentonville is the one-of-a-kind  Walmart Museum . It gives visitors a look back in time and through the corporate history of the largest retailer in the world. I loved seeing Sam Walton’s office, his beloved old truck, and the Walmart ads and campaign buttons. 

Please note: The Walmart Museum is under renovation from Nov. 1, 2022, through spring 2024.

If you have time, have a dip of ice cream from The Spark Cafe. F-150 and Spark Cream are the exclusive flavors.

2. Little Rock

Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas and home to some of the state’s most iconic landmarks. Start your visit at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library , a world-class facility dedicated to the 42nd president of the US.

The museum is very well done. Expect to spend 2-3 hours, depending on how much time you spend reading the placards. Pay a visit to the gift shop, which is chock full of fabulous finds, books, scarves, and souvenirs.

Outside, the Clinton Presidential Park Bridge is a thing of beauty. This pedestrian-only (one of four in Little Rock), also known as the Rock Island Bridge, is part of the 14-mile Arkansas River Trail. Consider riding your bike across it.

If you’re into history and social justice, visit Little Rock Central High School , a National Historic Site – this was the scene of forced desegregation that you read about in history books. It is a small but mighty museum, but the outside was stunning.

Be prepared to shed a few tears if you take the time to learn about the Little Rock Nine.

Make time for the delicious local cuisine, such as  Camp Taco  at Lost Forty Brewing, and the outstanding burgers and hand-dipped shakes at  Big Orange . At Camp Taco, start your meal with the delicious white poblano cheese dip.

For your main course, dive into the Big Shell Taco Salad with Adobo ‘Shrooms .

At Big Orange, the Delta Blue Burger, with blue cheese, red pepper jelly, butter leaf lettuce, tomato, red onion, and garlic mayo, is finger-lickin’ good!

The Little Rock North  Jct. I-40 KOA Journey  campground is great for camping and exploring the city. Expect free Wifi, 72-channel cable, bike rentals, a fitness center, and an ice cream parlor.

3. Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs  is a charming Victorian-era town full of culture and traditions. Visitors can stay in the historic and haunted Crescent Hotel or explore downtown’s many quirky shops and intriguing art galleries. I could spend hours exploring this fun and funky Victorian village. 

Pro Tip:   Remember the staircase murals and the interactive Eureka Springs Art Wall. 

Be prepared for strenuous walking, as the mountain town is staggered on multiple levels. Word to the wise, walk down from your hotel (if staying in town at the Crescent), then pay for a taxi to get back up. It’s under $5.

The 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa is a darling landmark property with a cozy lobby, onsite restaurants, and occasional hauntings. It has been voted America’s Most Haunted Hotel by Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures . It also boasts a Historic Hotels of America partnership.

My room was huge, filled with antique furnishings, and had a fantastic balcony. The views alone were worth the room rate. Is there anywhere better to indulge yourself in the Ozark Mountains than this picturesque spot?

The Christ of the Ozarks statue glistens in the sunlight and pays homage to the area’s history. It is a fascinating place to visit; the figure is way bigger than I had imagined. You are sure to see people from all over the world sightseeing at this beautiful property while you are there.

Stop by  Eureka Springs Coffee House  for a coffee or latte before eating a romantic dinner at  Ermilio’s  Italian Restaurant. Eggs Benedict is on point at the coffee house, and you can’t go wrong with any of the coffee drinks. 

Ermilio’s truly has all your favorite classic pasta dishes, and the two I tried were delicious. Save room for a slice of Italian wedding cake.

4. Texarkana

Texarkana is the city that straddles the Texas-Arkansas state line. Be sure to explore the  Texarkana Main Street District  downtown and take some photo ops with the state line. If you are familiar with ghost signs, many are in downtown Texarkana. 

Dubbed the “King of Ragtime,” Scott Joplin, an American pianist and composer ( The   Entertainer  was one of his most famous), was from Texarkana. Look for the cool mural depicting his works in town. Fun fact, he also won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize. 

Visit  Naaman’s BBQ , a spiffy joint that will make your road trip worth it! The meat plates with cheesy corn and green beans are excellent. Pulled pork and brisket are musts! My hubby liked the mac & cheese.

If I recall correctly, banana pudding was the dessert that followed our meal. 

If you are camping or RVing, I recommend overnighting at the  Texarkana KOA Journey . I was a fan of the super-fast Wifi and inviting swimming pool. Check out the deluxe cabins for those who want to experience the property but are not campers.

Bonus, the KOA is only about a minute from a travel plaza that houses a Denny’s . Moons over My Hammy are so close!

5. Murfreesboro

Murfreesboro is a tiny town (population 1621) full of southern charm, friendly people, and great food. We stopped there to do some shopping as we were RVing through the state of Arkansas.  Caddo Antiques Gifts  was what lured us in.

This place is a treasure trove! You could spend hours browsing the unique items.

We were referred to Southern Dine restaurant for lunch and loved chatting with the locals. My Fried Bologna on Texas Toast was so good. I also had sides of green beans and mac & Cheese. Southern Dine now has a salad bar option on the menu, too.

Most people come to Murfreesboro to dig for diamonds at  Crater of Diamonds State Park . It is “one of the only diamond-producing sites in the world where the public can search for diamonds in their original volcanic source.”

It was fun but exceptionally backbreaking. We rented a wagon and digging utensils, then went to town scooping up the earth bit by bit in search of glitzy, sparkly, pretty shiny things. Their policy, in case you were wondering, is finders, keepers.

We didn’t land any diamonds, but it was fun, and I would do it again. Price of admission to the diamond search area is $13 per adult and $6 for children.

It’s always been a dream of ours to go on a road trip though the Southern United States, checking out some of the best cultural and scenic vistas along the way.

This year we were lucky enough to finally tick off that dream from our bucket list, and after exploring the best sights in Louisiana we crossed the border into the neighboring state of Arkansas.

Truth be told we hadn’t really heard a lot about the state, so we went in with a fully open mind and excitement levels buzzing to see what we can find.

With no expectations we were incredibly surprised at just how nice the road trip was. They don’t call it the Natural State for nothing.

Day 1: Little Rock

Unless you’re like us and travelling from Louisiana or one of the other neighboring states, you will most likely fly into the capital of Arkansas, Little Rock.

Lucky for you too, because this is a great place to start exploring.

Definitely leave yourself a day or two to explore this city, as there really is so many great things to do in Little Rock .

You can learn about the history, try some local beer, explore Bill Clinton’s Presidential Library or enjoy all the green space that Little Rock offers on a bike.

Here are our suggestions for what to do on your first day in Arkansas.

The absolute best way to explore a city is by bicycle. So that’s what we did in Little Rock, and you should too.

We recommend spending the morning riding around and learning about the city Little Rock. The best people to do this with is Rock Town River Outfitters .

These guys provide the bikes and the knowledge with their awesome guides, who absolutely love their city.

During our bike tour we learnt a lot about Little Rock and saw so much on two wheels in a short period of time.

Ride down streets with old historical warehouses, huge mansions and of course the iconic State Buildings.

This one is not to miss if you visit Little Rock and don’t have a lot of time. A standard tour will take about 3 hours.

After a little work out, why not learn more history at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum , also known as the Clinton Presidential Center?

Being from Australia, it was fascinating to us that in the USA after the president finishes their term a museum is made to house the entire archives of the life of the presidency.

Bill Clinton was born and raised in Arkansas, so having the museum in Little Rock was a no brainer.

There are over 100,000 objects to read and see in this museum, from gifts he received, artwork and fashion pieces.

One of the real highlights though is an exact replica of the Oval Office.

There are countless images, videos and records stored here, and you can spend a couple of hours wandering around the different exhibits.

The restaurant also serves surprisingly delicious food. Worth stopping by for lunch.

Next on our list for your time exploring Little Rock is some local music, food, craft beer and great atmosphere – all found at  Camp Taco .

This small brewery is a hidden gem in Little Rock, with a large number of unique craft beersand delicious Mexican-style food.

Eating here was actually the best meal we had in the entire state. Make sure you get the Mexican ramen, it was divine!

Day 2: Little Rock to Hot Springs National Park – 55 miles, 1 hr

For the next two nights you’re going to stay in Hot Springs, one of the nicest places in the Southern USA.

From Little Rock, it takes about one hour to drive to Hot Springs National Park. We would recommend leaving early so you can get the most of each day, as there’s a lot to see and do here.

The town of Hot Springs is one of the best places to visit in Arkansas, and while most people like to come to check out the historic bathhouses, there’s actually a lot of great natural beauty around.

Hot Springs National Park has some stunning, lush forests, gorgeous waterfalls, many lakes and some great activities like mountain biking and hiking close by.

Start your day right at this amazing family business, famous for making the best pancakes in Arkansas (and some of the best we have ever tasted).

We had a great breakfast here when we were in Hot Springs and it is not to be missed. We highly recommend the blueberry pancakes, and you have to try the freshly-squeezed orange juice.

After your brunch in Hot Springs, stop off at the Fordyce Bathhouse Visitors Center .

This is not just a visitors centre to help you find out information about the area, it is also a museum about the history of the bathhouses that were once an integral part of the town.

Before Hot Springs became a national park, 8 extravagant bathhouses were built that tapped into the natural hot water coming from the ground, providing a luxury bathing service for gangsters, politicians and business people from around the country.

Give yourself about one hour to walk the 3 levels (and basement) of the Fordyce Bathhouse building and learn how the bathhouses once were and what they looked like.

On the upper level. you can learn about how the mineral water is extracted into the buildings and where it comes from.

Do not miss the basement where you can see this process and the machinery they once used.

After your self-guided tour, go see the rangers in the centre to help you organise the rest of your stay here in Hot Springs. They are very knowledgable and can give you advice on any hikes, mountain bike trails and photography spots in the national park.

Next it’s time to walk down Bathhouse Row and check out the 8 bathhouses. Make sure to read about each one with the information boards in front of them all.

Since you have learnt all about the Thermal Bathhouses, why not try one for yourself?

We recommend the Quapaw Baths and Spa. We popped on in and paid for the public baths.

They were so relaxing and our skin felt amazing afterwards. The thermal water has health benefits and many locals visit the bathhouse regularly.

The service they offer for the public baths are first-come, first-serve. You do not need a reservation, just come in and pay. They do get busy and they may start a waiting list so get there early or later in the day.

• Opening Hours – Wednesday to Monday – 10am – 6pm (closed on Tuesday)
• Price – $25 plus tax per person (public baths)

This is a great place to see the whole area, where you can look down over the town.

Once you have reached the mountain tower park your car and head inside. There is a fee to head up the top for the view if you want a higher elevation.

The tower elevator will take you 66 meters (216 feet) up to the top where the observation decks are.

You will enjoy amazing panoramic views of the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs Mountain, and Diamond Lakes area.

• Price – $8 for adults (12 & over) and $4.50 for children (5 to 11). Free under 5 years old.

After checking out the great view from the top of Mountain Tower, explore the short hiking trails nearby.

Get out and see the scenic Ouachita Mountains. These hikes are great for all ages and levels. You get more great views of the area and

If you have extra time and want to do some more hiking, check out the trailheads that are located very close to downtown, such as the Sunset Trail, West Mountain Trail and Gulpha Gorge Trail which are all great hikes.

Welcome to our favourite place in all of Arkansas!

When the town was designated as a national park, all but 2 of the bathhouses closed down. These beautiful buildings though were wasting away, until one young entrepreneur came up with an idea – why not turn one of the bathhouses into a brewery?

Meet Rose, the founder of Superior Bathhouse Brewery . She came up with this incredible idea and after years of planning, permit-acquiring and historical protection agreements, she opened up the first ever brewery inside a US national park.

It’s absolutely booming now, and during the summer she has line-ups down the street for people wanting to come in and grab a taste.

Rose loves good beer (learning her craft in her basement), but also loves to get experimental with her brews. Besides delicious IPAs, stouts, lagers and ales, she throws random ingredients in to see how they’ll turn out. For example we tried a jalapeño ale, infused with peppers giving it a spicy taste. And boy was it good.

Do not miss stopping in here on your Arkansas road trip.

If you want to stay in one of the nicest and most unique accommodations in Hot Springs, make sure you book in for two nights here.

The Hot Springs Treehouses are just 15 minutes outside the town of Hot Springs, but feel like they’re in a whole different world.

We stayed in the Firefly Ridge Treehouse, a huge log cabin with a fireplace, big sitting area, massive bed and the highlight, a hot tub on the deck surrounded by beautiful forest!

We spent two nights here and loved chilling by the fire, sitting in the jacuzzi and listening to the sounds of birds and insects. Such a peaceful place.

Day 3: Hot Springs National Park

On your second day in Hot Springs, head out for more great adventures around town.

Kollective was such a great place to fill your body up with energy before a busy day of adventures.

They have a great variety of food and drinks to choose from. Their coffee was delicious and we recommend dining in too.

They make fantastic breakfast bagels, and even us as self-proclaimed coffee snobs (we are Australians after all) gave two thumbs up to their brew.

The mountains around Hot Springs are filled with miles of trails, so why not pick up a mountain bike and hit them?

These versatile trails are right in the backyard of downtown Hot Springs, so no need to drive anywhere – just pedal from town.

Visit the Garvan Woodland Gardens

There is something so calming and relaxing about walking around a garden, and this spot here is one of those magical places!

When I read there was an amazing garden just outside of Hot Springs, I had to check it out.

The Garvan Woodland Gardens is a 210-acre botanical garden with lots of walking paths to enjoy.

To promote well being, the botanical garden has walking circuits so you can either exercise in nature or sit and enjoy the stillness.

We spent hours at the Garden exploring each section. The architecture with some of the designs in the garden are so unique. I took lots of inspiration for our own garden in the future.

The gardens are located near Lake Hamilton. Lake Hamilton is a family fun man made lake where water sports take place on weekends.

• Opening Hours – 7 days a week: 10am – 6pm
• Price – $20 for Adults (13 and up), $5 for Children (4-12) and free for under 3 years old

You have to visit the Anthony Chapel Complex when you are at the Garvan Woodland Gardens. Do not miss it. It is incredible.

Can you believe there’s a church like this hidden in the forest in Arkansas?? How cool is this place!

This is Anthony Chapel, standing 57 feet tall and made of native wood & glass. It was built in 2006 and designed by architects Maurice Jennings and David McKee.

It looked so unique emerging from the trees, and the inside was just as cool. It’s often used for weddings – what a beautiful spot to get married!

Now if you want to try a traditional Pizza, Italian style, check out Delucas. This is the place to eat in Little Rock.

The pizza was the biggest pizza we have ever seen. It was huge.

A few hours south of Hot Springs is one of the most unique places in all of Arkansas – Crater of Diamonds State Park .

This park may be hot and dusty, but you’re not coming here for the landscapes. Instead this is the only place in the world where the public can mine for diamonds!

Diamonds naturally occur in the area, and while there’s not enough to warrant a full-scale diamond mine being developed, there’s enough around for the average Joe to dig, sift and eventually find a shiny rock.

And best of all, if you find one, you keep it! The biggest ever found was 40 carats. Can you imagine?

We tried our best but didn’t find any of our own diamonds unfortunately. But we did meet some people who come every year and do indeed find the precious stones.

It’s very hot out in the field, so make sure you bring lots of water with you. You can rent all the sifting equipment you’d need from the visitors centre.

The town itself is quite pleasant as well, so grab a nice BnB or motel and enjoy the atmosphere after you’ve (hopefully) struck it rich.

• Opening Hours – 7 days a week – 8am – 4pm
• Price – $10 per person for entry, equipment rental on top of that. If you arrive late in the day, you can use your ticket for the following day.

Day 5: Crater of Diamonds to Mount Magazine State Park – 118 Miles, 2 hr 30 min

From Crater of Diamonds it’s time to drive to Mount Magazine State Park in Northwest Arkansas. This route will take you about 2 hours and 30 minutes, so hit the road early.

On the way, you will drive along the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway which is a gorgeous scenic drive, so keep the camera handy.

The Mount Magazine Scenic Byway enjoys a slow ascent on a windy road through gorgeous forest.

Mount Magazine is Arkansas highest peak at 2,753 feet (Around 840 metres). It is a lovely drive with a lot of viewpoint stops along the way.

Do not miss them as this is a great opportunity for a nice view and to stretch your legs.

Once you reach near the top of Mount Magazine State Park you will come across the Lodge , the top accommodation in the area.

This is where we stayed and it really is a lovely place. The lodge has great views on a clear day but it is also amazing when the clouds come in low and you can enjoy a hot drink by the fireplace.

There are many trails leaving from the lodge or are located a short drive, so grab your walking shoes and hit the track.

Travelling along the Mount Magazine Scenic Bypass you will see a lot of hiking trails.

When you arrive to Mount Magazine State Park your first stop should be the Tourist Center. Do drop in here and they will provide all the information you will need for hiking in the area.

There are hikes from the Mount Magazine State Park Tourist Centre or you can hike from the Mount Magazine Lodge.

• Benefield West Loop Trail
• Mossback Ridge Trail
• Inspiration Point
• Sunrise Rock
• Bear Hollow Trail
• Turkey Springs
• Greenfield Trail
• North Rim Trail
• Will Apple’s Road Trail
• Signal Hill Trail

Once you’ve finished hiking head back to the lodge for a big meal and cold beer.

Day 6: Mount Magazine to Petit Jean State Park – 53 Miles, 1 hr 15 min

Get on the road early and head down the Mount Magazine Scenic Bypass towards Petit Jean State Park.

This is another beautiful state park where you can really embrace nature.

When arriving to Petit Jean State Park there is a camping area or cabins to stay in.

Check into the lodge and they will be able to give you some advice on the hikes in the area.

Most of the walking trails are a short distance from Mather Lodge. Spend the afternoon exploring the area by foot or relax in the lodge.

The Cedar Falls Overlook is an easy hike at just a quarter mile. It’s a well maintained boardwalk that will overlook the waterfalls.

If you are keen, there is the Cedar Falls Trail hike that is 2 miles out and back. It is a moderate/strenuous hike that leads down to the waterfall. There are a number of stairs that descend and the path is well maintained.

The Cedar Creek Trail is a loop trail that is about 1.2 mile (2km) long.

The well marked trail starts at the Old Pioneer Cabin where you will follow the path on a fairly easy but moderate trail.

The trail’s scenery is beautiful and well worth it.

After the walk head back to your cabin or campsite, make a fire and enjoy the stars.

Day 7: Petit Jean State Park to Little Rock – 70 Miles, 1 hr 15 min

Before leaving Petit Jean State Park, get up early and check out the Petit Jean Gravesite Overlook.

This drive will take about an 1 hour and 20 minutes. The lookout has beautiful views over the Arkansas River Valley.

It has great boardwalk for everyone to enjoy with the allowance to go out to the edge.

Getting there for sunrise is the way to go but if you miss it, this place is still worth a stop.

Afterwards it’s time to make the drive back to Little Rock to finish you Arkansas road trip.

Drive into town, check in at your hotel (or park the car downtown) and go for a walk at the Riverfront Park.

Riverfront Park stretches 11 blocks on the south side of the Arkansas River. The gorgeous urban parkland has 33 acres for nature lovers.

The Riverfront Park is great for outdoor activities and you can even learn about the state’s history. Get out and go for a stroll.

Day 8: Enjoy Your Last Day in Little Rock

It’s the last day of your Arkansas road trip itinerary, and by now you’ve seen some of the state’s top attractions.

If you have a flight out today make sure you enjoy a delicious breakfast, have a coffee and make your way to the airport.

In town for the whole day? Awesome! There’s still lots to do.

Why not check out a local brewery and relax for the afternoon? Most of the breweries have live music on the weekends.

If you have longer on your Arkansas Road Trip, here are a few more places to check out

Near the border of Oklahoma and on the way to Fayetteville, you could stop off at Devil’s Den State Park for some hiking on the number of hiking trails.

Located in the Ozark National Forest, Devil’s Den State Park is a peaceful place that’s worth a visit.

Another city located in the Ozark Mountains is Eureka Springs.

Eureka Springs is known for its beautifully preserved Victorian buildings in its Historic District.

Today in Eureka Springs, you can stay in one if you choose such as the Basin Park Hotel and Crescent Hotel. The historical buildings were built in the past around the city’s natural springs.

In the nearby hills around Eureka Springs, you can visit the Thorncrown Chapel which is a stunning wood and glass church. Very similar to the Anthony Chapel Complex in the Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs.

If you are in the north of Arkansas, do not miss stopping off at Eureka Springs.

After Eureka Springs, you can head north to Blanchard Springs Caverns. Blanchard Springs Caverns is 2.5 hours of Little Rock.

It’s worth a visit to drive the Sylamore Scenic Byway, one of the top road trips in Arkansas.

Make the most of Arkansas’ stunning mountain scenery by hitting the trails in the Ouachita National Forest and along the Ouachita River outside of Hot Springs.

What?? Arkansas has vineyards? It sure does!

In the Arkansas River Valley you can find a whole variety of great vineyards serving up delicious drops.

While Arkansas wine country might not match Napa Valley, it’s still worth a visit if you have time and like a good drink.

The small town near Buffalo National River is a great place for canoeing, camping, boat rentals and getting the family into the great outdoors on the Buffalo River.

Finally for our list of other places to check out when you head west on these Arkansas road trips is the hip town of Fayetteville.

This gorgeous region is home to excellent rock climbing, cool cafes in small towns and a great launching point for the Ozark National Forest, Mulberry River and other excellent places to visit.

There are multiple car rental companies at the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, and in Little Rock. Your best option is to book ahead so you do not miss out on a car when you arrive.

Explore War Eagle Cavern on Beaver Lake

If you’re looking for an adventure, then check out this cavern and see why it’s one of the best Arkansas getaways. You start with a small hike to the lake which will hugs the entrance to the cavern. The tour guides that take you into the cavern are super informative.

The insides are just so majestic, with small waterfalls and rock formations. Keep your eyes peeled for the bats that live in the caves. It can be as much as a 30 degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature inside the cave, so be prepared!

Once you finish at the cavern, there’s plenty of other things to do here. There’s lots of trails to hike. You can also go panning for gems, try your hand at the maze, or see the gravity house that seems to defy physics!

Relax at the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa

Rest and relaxation is the name of the game at this Victorian gem located in downtown Eureka Springs, within walking distance of museums, eateries, and the play house. This is truly one of the best romantic getaways in Arkansas!

Built in 1886, it was made a luxurious getaway for the tourists who flocked to the area to soak in the nearby healing springs. There is nothing like the Garvan Woodland Gardens. With over 210 acres, this botanic gardens is maintained by the University of Arkansas, and it is certainly one of our top picks for romantic weekend getaways in Arkansas.

With so much land, you could spend hours or even days wandering the grounds. One place onsite that you have to visit is Anthony Chapel. It’s a stunning feat of architecture that blends nature and civilization. The building itself looks like an extension of the forest, with walls made of branches.

The Full Moon Bridge is one of the most photographed places in the garden and looks like it came directly from somewhere in Asia. If you bring kids, the Tree House cannot be missed. Within you’ll find the most unique views of the Gardens along with some cool interactive exhibits.

Camp at Ozarks National Forest

Head into the pristine wilderness that only Ozarks National Forest can offer! It spans over 1.6 million acres and is home to the highest mountain in Arkansas.

There are plenty of things to do at Ozarks. Enjoy the water on a kayak or canoe. Hit the well maintained hiking trails that take you along lakes, waterfalls, and breathe taking overlooks. Hunting and fishing are also allowed.

If you want to stay within the park, you have your pick of the place. There are cabins you can rent, including some historic ones. Camping is definitely popular here. Stay at a developed campsite, or rough it in a wilderness area. Fun fact: there are 65,000 acres where primitive camping is allowed. Escape into nature at this awesome forest.

Discover The Vibrant City Of Little Rock

See where history meets modern day in Little Rock, one of the best weekend getaways in Arkansas. There are honestly too many cool things to see in Little Rock to name here, so we’ll just pick some of our favorites.

The Old State House Museum is the historic and original state capitol building for the state. With its sweeping pillars, it is the epitome of Southern architecture. Another famous historic site is the Old Mill, which you might recognize from the movie Gone with the Wind. It’s super quaint and free to visit.

For more modern history, check out the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site. This is the school where the group of African American students known as the Little Rock Nine enrolled to desegregate the school system. Because it is still a working school, you’ll want to book your visit ahead of time.

Find Your Fortune At Crater Of Diamonds State Park

A trip to this awesome state park is sure to make it the best of Arkansas vacations, and we’ll tell you why! Since Crater of Diamonds State Park was established 50 years ago, visitors have unearthed over 33,000 diamonds. One was even 40 carats!

Located on an old volcano crater, this park encompasses 37 acres for you to explore. You can bring your own equipment or rent it from the park. On your way in, stop by the Discovery Center to learn more about how diamonds are formed. There’s also a café and water park onsite.

Stay at the Historical Gables Inn

If you’ve never stayed at a bed & breakfast, then the Gables Inn will get you hooked on them!

This historic mansion turned B&B was built in 1905 near Hot Springs, Arkansas. You can walk to the downtown area from the Inn, including plenty of museums, shops, eateries, and the national park! Although you won’t want to miss the delicious breakfast served by the Inn daily!

Buffalo National River runs for over 135 miles, all of which is undammed river. That’s surprisingly rare in the United States! You can travel on the river via canoe or kayak. Bring your own, or rent from the park! There’s also plenty of hiking, including a path that takes you by the Collier Homestead. It’s one of the original settlements in the area.

This National River is the perfect place to go stargazing. Their goal is to minimize light pollution, which means an unrivaled view of the night sky. Definitely try camping here too. You can rough it in a tent, or park your RV!

Experience Serenity at Thorncrown Chapel

Millions have flocked to the Thorncrown Chapel since its opening in 1980. This building was truly a labor of love, and it shows! You’ll find it just outside of Eureka Springs. It is one of the most beautiful churches you’ll ever see.

The massive windows makes it hard to tell where the building ends and where nature starts. It’s won countless awards for its unbelievable architecture. It brings you closer to nature and serenity. Hang Out at Siloam Springs

Did you know that the Smithsonian named Siloam Springs one of the Best Small Towns in America? It’s true! No wonder it’s one of our favorite weekend trips in Arkansas!

This small town is known for its pristine natural beauty and spirit of community. The Sager Creek cuts straight through downtown. There are tons of green spaces around the river to enjoy. There are so many parks around the city, like the Siloam Springs Kayak Park. The Wild Wilderness Drive Through Safari, with its 400 acres of unique animals, is another popular attraction.

This quaint town is also home to many seasonal festivals as well as a year round farmers market. Make sure to check out the cute little boutiques around too!

Escape to New Orleans Hotel & Spa

Want to be transported back to an earlier era? Then go for a stay at the charming New Orleans Hotel & Spa!

Traverse Hot Springs National Park

Hot Springs National Park is one of the most unique weekend getaways in Arkansas. The area was first designated as a reserve by the US in 1830 (that predates Yellowstone!). Now the historic city of Hot Springs is nestled into the park itself.

The area is named for the 47 natural and healing springs in the park. You can see the up close and personal with the 30 miles worth of trails in the park.

Bathhouse Row is something that cannot be missed on a visit. Within the park are 8 luxurious bathhouses built at the turn of the century. Many of the bathhouses still offer services you can book, like bathing in the healing springs or samplings at the brewery, for example. We love this unique park!

Visit the Beautiful Bull Shoals Lake

There’s nothing as fun as a lakeside vacation, and do we have the spot for you! Bulls Shoals Lake is one of the pretties places in Arkansas. Even better, it’s a bit of a hidden gem, so it doesn’t get very crowded!

The best feature of the lake is its crystal clear water. There are over 20 parks to enjoy along the miles of lakeshore. The lake is famous for its water sports, and even more well know for its excellent trout fishing. You can also go boating, swimming, tubing, and water skiing here. No boat? Don’t worry, you can rent one at the marina!

You can take the girl outta Arkansas, but you can’t take the Arkansas out of the girl. I was one of the lucky few who grew up in the Natural State. With a population of 3 million people, I like to say it’s one of the nation’s best kept secrets.

It’s the simple life full of family, fun, and a whole bunch of Wal-Marts. When I traveled as a kid, people from other states or countries asked if I owned any shoes or hung out in Wal-Mart parking lots for fun…both of which were questionable at the time because I still love being barefoot to this day, and I probably did hang out in Sam Walton’s parking lots a time or two.

People’s perception of places is so funny. You never know until you go, and that, in a nutshell, is one of the reasons I love to travel. But this is home. Arkansas carries a southern comfort that wraps me up in layers of sweet relaxation, strong accents, and even stronger humidity. I thrive in that heat and, thus, shiver in the L.A. coastal summers. With seven national parks, 50 state parks, 600,000 acres of lakes, and 9,700 miles of streams and rivers, there is so much to explore. I recently took a road trip through this great state, the preferred way to travel in 2020!

Little Rock

Obviously, I missed a few places. I’ve spent countless days at my grandparent’s old home in Helena and Pine Bluff and have visited some insanely small towns while playing junior high basketball (go Buffs). I went on field trips to Petit Jean and Devil’s Den State Park where both have great trails and waterfalls. I learned how to shoot a gun in De Valls Bluff near Stuttgart, the duck hunting capital of the world. I’d love to see the highest point in the state at Mount Magazine alongside Blanchard Springs and the White River on my next trip!

Thanks for the tour Leslie. We are stuck in Florida with this virus keeping us from returning to Arkansas for the summer so these pics brought it back to us at just the right time. Those days at Trinity and remembering the Quad will always be with me. Look forward to your adventures every month. Cant wait to see where you will end up. Well, we just booked our Airbnb in Saint Joe to hit up the Buffalo River after seeing your pictures! Thanks for sharing! Another hidden gem for staying is River View Cabins & Canoes and I hate to share because it’s always booked now, but a cute spot and they drop and pick up on the Oauchita River behind the property! 💚 On a mission now to find these gorgeous waterfalls! ❤️

Thanks for featuring our state! I am a local Arkansan, born in Little Rock, grew up in Rogers, then have lived in big cities the last 11 years, but when the riots hit NYC- my husband and I left and have been in Bentonville, AR since June. It is insane how much has changed over the years. Bentonville is truly an urban town now- pubs, coffee shops, hip restaurants, and art galore! Your list is great, but there are a few I thought of for NWA if you want to explore more: there has been almost 80 million dollars invested into the paved and mountain bike trails that run from Bella Vista to Fayetteville (over 100 miles of trails)- they are comprehensive and incredible!! (and they are still building more!) The mountain biking alone is recognized as some of the best mountain biking in the world. Would also recommend bringing bikes to Pea Ridge National Park- it is secluded and gorgeous, they have great hiking trails too. Tanyard creek waterfall in Bella Vista is a beauty- just have to time it right after the rain. If you want a really weird experience, do the drive-thru Gentry Safari in Gentry…I have been going since I was a kid, it is truly something ha…definitely worth checking out. Also, Little Debbie headquarters is there and they have a five and dime shop, so you could make a pit stop there on your way out (who wouldn’t want a 10 cent hoho?! lol). There is a drive-in movie theatre in Fayetteville too that has been there forever, always a favorite!

The farmers market in Bentonville is every Saturday- a great selection of local goods, and they have live musicians playing- mostly jazz…swoon. Meteor cafe in Bentonvilee (coffee shop turned bar at night) has a bomb breakfast sandwich with french toast as the base, and a solid happy hour. Oven and Tap in Bentonville has been a favorite of ours- some of the best handmade pasta! They change up the menu almost every week using local fresh in-season ingredients..so tasty. The coolest place we have eaten here is called Louise Cafe in Bentonville- a very chic (indoor/outdoor) private airport restaurant named after Arkansas’ very own famous pilot, Louise Thaden…it’s truly magical to go there on a clear day, grab some tasty brunch, and watch these tiny beautiful airplanes fly all around you. Nothing Bundt Cakes in Rogers will rock all your bundt cake dreams…and Sweet Dream Creamery food truck in Bentonville is HEAVEN…homemade ice cream daily, always mixing up the flavors.

Dandy Roll in Rogers is in downtown, and has a massive collection of vintage prints and custom framing- definitely worth a peruse. The Rose and Somewhere in Time are two awesome antique/flea markets in Rogers. Cheap Thrills in Fayetteville has amazing vintage clothes…has been around forever, so many treasures!

If you really enjoy thrifting or vintage markets than you’ll love Fort Smith. Some great spots – Belle Starr, designer again, and wasted. Of course there are cute boutiques around town too! I just personally love the antique stuff because of the history.

A lot of outdoor adventure awaits in this small town, from exploring the Ouachita mountains and hiking the trails of Queen Wilhelmina state park to ATV riding at Wolf Pen Gap. Don’t forget to visit Alberts Pike Recreational Area, Little Missouri Falls, and the Cossatot River State Park while in the area🙂

I love that you’ve brought this attention to Arkansas! I went to school in Fayetteville and it has been my favorite place on earth ever since. I spent every weekend out in Jasper and Ponca. My favorite hike is Sweden Creek Falls! Arkansas is so beyond beautiful and even though I’m in Austin right now, my long term goal is to move back to Arkansas and raise a family in the most underrated state. congratulations on moving back!

I moved to Fort Smith in July of 2020 from Denver. We’ve really enjoyed how close outdoor activities are – if you like rock climbing, Fern Gully is only 40 minutes away and it’s a hidden gem for rock climbers! Also, downtown Fort Smith is starting to become alive/young again with places like The Bakery District opening up!

Hot Springs, you must go to La Hacienda. Must ask for the sweet salsa and queso. V8 is my favorite menu item. And the Blue Mountain Bakery in Jasper, absolutely kills me to say they are permanently closed! The peanut butter cookies were amazing 💔

Hi Lesley, thank you for this guide! I live in Los Angeles and you’ve inspired me to check out the Natural State. But, should I do it the last week of July (last minute vacation planning)? Or will it be oppressively hot? We’re a family of five, three kids 5 and under. Considering staying in 2-3 spots across the state.

Lesley, I absolutely love reading your travel blog. I have been to many of the same places in my lifetime, so it is fascinating to compare our trips and also have loved getting ideas from you for future adventures. My family and I live in Raleigh and I have been thinking about planning an Arkansas trip for our fall break, the second week in October. We thought it would be a fun drive to stop in to see friends in Nashville on the way, and then hit up Birmingham or/and Atlanta on a different route back. I was impressed with the Jasper area from your post and would make that our base. We would be interested in hiking, kayaking, exploring beautiful small towns. Is it still warm enough to swim in the rivers/lakes? Also, Is the second week or October a good time to explore the Natural state? Thanks for your recommendations!

The itinerary.

Little Rock to Bentonville, Arkansas

Town: Take the exit on AR-64 to venture deep into the Arkansas Wine Trail in Altus, Arkansas. The region reminded immigrants Jacob Post and Johann Wiederkehr so much of their home German and Swiss wine regions that they settled in and began growing grapes in the late 1880s. Both wineries are still there today, along with about a dozen other wineries. A drive through the region is stunning, but a short lunch break or tasting makes this stop truly memorable.

Eat & Drink: Chateau Aux Arc Vineyard and Winery . Just four miles off the road, in the heart of the Arkansas Wine Trail, you’ll find winemaker and Master Sommelier Audrey House’s award-winning vines and wines. The tasting room is open seven days a week, where visitors can sample complex blends, dry reds, and House’s signature Cynthiana wines (which she pioneered to become the state grape of Arkansas).

Do: Sam Walton put Bentonville on the map when he opened Walton’s 5 and 10 in 1951, which would later become the world’s first Walmart. The five and dime store is still there, attached to an authentic soda fountain that serves arguably the best butter pecan ice cream around, but the Walton family in recent years helped to open the architecturally stunning Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the family-friendly Amazeum .

Eat & Drink: Join James Beard Award-nominated chef Matt McClure for a culinary experience through farm-fresh regional cuisine with an Indian and Hmong twist (a nod to the families that have settled in Bentonville) inside The Hive at the 21C Museum Hotel . For an ethereal eating experience, book a table at The Preacher’s Son for a gluten-free meal inside a renovated church that includes a speakeasy downstairs for after-dinner tipples.

Stay: The 21C Museum Hotel Bentonville sits just off the main town square of downtown Bentonville and would be on the list of must-see places within the city even if you’re not booking a room within its 104 rooms due to its rotating gallery of art.

Breakfast: The biscuits are huge and the coffee is strong at The Buttered Biscuit , where their strawberry cheesecake pancakes make this restaurant a true indulgence for breakfast.

Bentonville to Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Town: The boutique shops and antique stores of historic downtown Rogers alone add up to one worth it stop along the way to Eureka Springs, but now the town’s brick-lined streets lead to an award-winning craft brewery and the new headquarters for locally beloved Onyx Coffee Lab .

Eat & Drink: A short drive from downtown Rogers will put you face-to-face with Arkansas’ only working watermill. The War Eagle Mill is a working gristmill (buy organic grain, cereal, and flour on site), and serves one of the best brunches in the state from the restaurant inside (breakfast and lunch also available). Visit the third weekend in October for the mill’s celebrated arts and craft fair.

Nature: War Eagle Cavern is just a two-mile drive off the main road, where you’ll find the only lakeside cavern entrance in the state. Cave tours are available and take you deep within the caverns of this historic spot.

Do : More than 60 natural springs bubble and spring from this quirky Victorian town, where a series of winding staircases guide visitors up and down the steep terrain to boutique shops, family-owned restaurants (chain stores and restaurants are banned in downtown Eureka Springs ), and miles of hiking trails. An active artist enclave colors the town with an artsy vibe, but it’s the underground catacombs and sinister story behind the town’s largest hotel that keeps intrigue alive.

Eat & Drink: A bicycle sits on top of the marquee at Sparky’s Roadhouse Café , which is the first sign of this ’50s style diner’s funky decor. Come prepared to sign a waiver if you plan to sample their Stupid Hott Burger with homemade ghost chili salsa, or simply lounge coolly with a cold beer on their open-air patio.

Stay: Known as “The Grand Ol’ Lady of the Ozarks,” the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa features 72 guest rooms and 4 luxury lodges on its stunningly landscaped perch overlooking the town of Eureka Springs. The hotel is known as the most haunted hotel in America, where nightly ghost tours uncover the hotel’s haunting past.

Breakfast: The Eureka Springs Coffee House serves freshly-baked cinnamon rolls and muffins alongside a variety of specialty coffee drinks made from Onyx Coffee Lab’s signature roasts.

Eureka Springs to Branson, Missouri

Town: Ridgedale, Missouri, is home to the Top of the Rock , a scenic overlook at Big Cedar Lodge that offers four levels of viewing balconies to gaze out upon the Ozark Mountains and Table Rock Lake. Spend an hour or two soaking in the views before continuing on toward Branson.

Eat & Drink: The Buffalo Bar at Big Cedar Lodge offers the best views from its outdoor patio, where a menu of classic pub fare and wood-fired pizzas fill the lunch menu.

Detour: The Thorncrown Chapel is in the opposite direction from Branson, but a short detour to see this hidden glass chapel in the woods is worth the trip. The 48-foot chapel is one of three of Arkansas’ glass chapels, all designed by E. Fay Jones. The walk is short from the parking lot at the base of the hill, but the views are spectacular inside and outside of this absolutely inspiring structure.

Do: Branson offers an authentic American small-town charm like few other towns can even imagine. Pies are sweeter in Branson , shopping is friendlier, and the entertainment is as clean as the streets of its historic downtown.

Eat & Drink: Branson Landing is where the nightlife action happens in town, but for an authentic Branson meal, head to the Farmhouse Restaurant to fill up on chicken fried steak, fried okra, and their famous blackberry cobbler.

Stay: The Branson Hotel features nine rooms inside a renovated 1903 historic buildings and is reserved only for adults. For a more family-friendly option, check in to the lakefront condos at Still Waters Resort overlooking Branson’s Table Rock Lake .

Breakfast: Breakfast is served all day at Billy Gail’s Café , where their homemade apple cinnamon rolls weigh a pound and their Billion Dollar Bacon is hearty enough to be an entrée itself.

Andy Williams opened the Andy Williams Moon River Theater (now known as the Andy Williams Performing Arts Center & Theatre) in Branson in 1992 and performed there until he died at age 84. The theater still hosts regular shows now that it is owned by one of the Osmond Brothers.

Branson to St. Louis, Missouri

Town: Thayer, Missouri. This small town is just 10 miles from Grand Gulf State Park , which is more commonly known as the “Little Grand Canyon.” The gulf itself stretches for a mile between canyon walls reaching 130-feet tall, where natural bridges and collapsed caves leave much to be explored.

Eat & Drink : Cross back over the border to Mammoth Springs, Arkansas, to dine al-fresco by the mighty Spring River at Wood’s Riverbend Restaurant . Breakfast is served all day long, but their BBQ ribs will keep you satisfied all the way to St. Louis.

Roadside Attraction/Nature: Elephant Rocks State Park is home to giant red granite boulders that have taken the shape of elephants. Use your imagination to make out the elephant shapes, or simply climb to the top of the 27-foot-tall Dumbo rock for the ultimate bragging rights.

Do: Set along the west bank of the Mississippi River, St. Louis is home to the only National Blues Museum in the country and offers amazing photo ops from either the bottom or top of the city’s famous Gateway Arch. St. Louis is naturally suited for adventures, with its Citygarden , caverns , and nature reserves .

Eat & Drink: It’s the local wild cherry wood used to smoke all the meat at The Shaved Duck that makes all the difference in this award-winning St. Louis BBQ joint. You won’t go wrong with anything from the smoker, but make sure to leave room for their brown butter brussels sprouts and buttermilk cornbread.

Stay : Each of the four rooms within this 19th century home take the name of an iconic location within the city, and add to the charm of the Fleur-de-Lys Mansion, Luxury Inn at the Park . Breakfast is included in the stay, and includes freshly baked breads, locally roasted coffee from Thomas Coffee , and only the freshest local ingredients possible.

St. Louis to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Town: Cuba. Cross Cuba off your list…well, at least Cuba, Missouri; this small town is loaded with charisma. Drive along Cuba’s Historic Route-66 for an outdoor art gallery of sorts as you pass by the town’s 12 outdoor murals depicting famous moments in history.

Eat & Drink: Shelly’s Route 66 Café hasn’t changed much since it first opened during this historic route’s heyday. This classic diner serves up hearty breakfasts and daily specials for lunch.

Photo Op: Onondaga Cave State Park . The dramatic stalagmites and impressive underground ponds within the Onondaga Caves are just as photogenic as the Vilander Bluff Natural Area that sits above them; although you don’t need to wait for a guide to access the panoramic views of the Meramec River at the top of Vilander Bluff.

Do: Osage Beach is just one of the quaint towns surrounding Lake of the Ozarks , where everything revolves around the water. Speedboats, pontoons, fishing boats, and jet skis can all be rented at an hourly rate, and even the local spas offer floating therapies.

Stay: The Inn at Harbour Ridge is located just outside the city limits of Osage Beach on a lakefront property nearby a community dock and swimming platform. Four guestrooms create a cozy ambiance, while gourmet breakfasts of cheddar omelets or baked cinnamon French toast and peach-smothered sausages fuel guests for a day of adventuring around the lake.

Shop : There are more than 65 stores mapped out along the Osage Beach Outlet Marketplace , where shoppers can score deals on designer handbags or grab a stylish swimsuit for the boat.

Lake of the Ozarks to Baxter Springs, Kansas

Eat & Drink: Set along Historic Route-66 in a ’50s-style diner building, Iggy’s Diner serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and hand dips their ice cream for their famous floats, malts, and shakes.

Roadside Attraction: Designed by Precious Moments   creator Samual J. Butcher, the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri, is a standalone chapel devoted entirely to the Precious Moments characters the artist created more than 35 years ago. Sistine Chapel-style murals line the inside of the building, while a gift shop sells everything from exclusive figurines to wedding accessories.

Nature: A long viewing platform at the Schermerhorn Park and Cave lets visitors peek inside this half-mile-long cave, where rare species of salamander are protected by the WPA in this unusual habitat. The park is part of the 55 square miles that comprise the Ozarks of Kansas, and this little slice of the state is ripe with caves, sinking streams, and sinkholes.

Do: The historic town of Baxter Springs is just a few miles from the OK-KS-MO Tri-State Marker (stand in three places at one time!), where it sits along Historic Route-66 with preserved gas stations and vintage service buildings. The town’s Native American and Route 66 history are preserved within the Baxter Springs Heritage Center & Museum, where visitors can begin a self-guided drive to 12 different sites along the town’s Civil War trail, including Fort Blair .

Eat & Drink: Rita’s Roost Bistro & Sweet Shop is located nearby the old 1870s Crowell Bank building—legend has it that Jesse James robbed the bank in 1876—where it serves burgers and hot dogs inside its ’50s-themed interior. Finish your float and head next door to the Spinout Arcade for some classic games of pinball, air hockey, and bumper cars.

Stay: The three bedrooms inside the Rose Cottage along Route 66 encompass both floors of this 1899 Victorian home. Spend your morning sipping tea in the dining room while the sound of a vintage record player churning out rhythmic jazz sets the tone for the day as birds bathing just outside the windows in the cottage garden.

Breakfast: Weston’s Route 66 Café offers comfort diner food with friendly service. The coffee is hot, the biscuits are drenched in gravy, and pies are made fresh daily.

Baxter Springs to Tenkiller State Park, Oklahoma

Town:  The Blue Whale of Catoosa may sound like a mythical creature, but in the town of Catoosa, it’s a local legend. Made from metal and cement, the whale was built in a pond as a surprise anniversary gift in the ’70s but became a secret swimming hole along Route 66. Swimming isn’t allowed any longer, but the spot is a popular picnic area and the whale has its own IG hashtag #bluewhalecatoosa .

Eat & Drink: There are some great diners along this Route 66 town, but if you’re just in it for the whale photo, grab a pineapple whip (or a snow cone topped with Nerds and a Ring Pop) from the Oh Mighty Ices food truck and enjoy your treat around the colorful picnic tables set up for prime whale spotting.

Do: There are more than 130 miles of shoreline surrounding Lake Tenkiller at Tenkiller State Park . Along with watersports and fishing, the clear waters of the lake provide ideal conditions for scuba diving to the lake’s sunken airplane fuselage, school bus, helicopter, and two boats.

Eat & Drink: Boats and jet skis can pull right up to the floating deck at Clearwater Café at Pine Cove Marino on Tenkiller Lake, where steaks are cooked to order and onion rings come stacked a foot high.

Stay: RV and tent campgrounds line the park grounds, but it’s the state park’s 38 cabins that offer the best views and plots along the lake. Cabins range from one-bedroom units to three-bedroom units, but all are equipped with heat and air conditioning with linens and bedding for four.

Breakfast: There are few things sweeter than Sweet Nana’s Donuts , other than maybe Nana herself. This mom-and-pop bakery serves full breakfast (bacon, eggs, breakfast burritos, hot coffee, etc.), but the specialty donuts, maple bacon bars, and sausage rolls are among the best sellers.

Tenkiller State Park to Hot Springs, Arkansas

Town: Fort Smith is the third most populated city in Arkansas, and this quirky town offers everything from an amusement park ride in the middle of its downtown to a museum dedicated entirely to the spot where Elvis Presley got his first buzz cut when joining the Army on March 25, 1958.

Eat & Drink: The cranberry pecan bread at The Bread Box in Fort Smith is legendary around Arkansas. Sandwiches are the specialty at this family-run bakery, like their chicken salad sandwich on cranberry pecan bread or the Amy Joe grown-up grilled cheese with melted cheddar and swiss cheeses on grilled spinach feta bread topped with tomatoes, sliced pickles, and jalapenos.

Do: Located in Central Arkansas’ Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs is home to some of the most prized thermal waters in the country (143-degrees and packed full of minerals). Run the bases around one of the first MLB Spring Training fields in the country or soak in the gangster history at Bathhouse Row—once a favorite vacation spot for legendary criminals Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Bugsy Siegel.

Eat & Drink: The Superior Bathhouse Brewery serves upscale pub food and craft beers brewed from the thermal waters of the National Park inside a renovated bathhouse. Former speakeasy and mobster hangout, the Ohio Club , is still a hot spot for nightlife in Hot Springs.

Stay: The chic Hotel Hale operates inside a renovated bathhouse along Bathhouse Row, where this boutique property features nine modern guestrooms with thermal water bathtubs.

Breakfast: Kollective Coffee and Tea is one of the top third-wave coffee shops in Arkansas, serving organic and local specialties (vegan options available) alongside locally-roasted coffee.

Hot Springs to Little Rock, Arkansas

Eat & Drink: Save your appetite on this short stretch to dine in one of Little Rock’s many local restaurants.

Nature: During a fall road trip, stop in at the Roseberry Farms Pumpkin Patch for an authentic Arkansas hay ride and s’mores around the fire.

Do: Little Rock, Arkansas, is a city of tales and trails. The tales begin with the Little Rock Central High School on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, and the trails begin with the Big Dam Bridge that connects 14 miles of riverside trails throughout the city. The trail connects Little Rock’s bustling River Market district to countless breweries and restaurants and even provides pedestrian/cyclist access to the Clinton Presidential Center .

Eat & Drink: Set inside a repurposed gas station, The Fold: Botanas & Bar is modern Ark-Mex at its finest. The décor is retro-chic and the tacos are served on handmade tortillas and filled with locally sourced ingredients. Order their ground bison burrito and a lemon-rosemary margarita for the full experience.

Stay: The Empress of Little Rock is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its pure representation of Victorian architecture, where nine rooms and suites create a cozy retreat for guests at this charming bed and breakfast.  

Breakfast: Weekend brunch lines at At the Corner, a Modern Diner extend into the streets of Little Rock’s River Market district, but out in the Argenta Arts District , Saturdays are for all-you-can-eat pancakes over at Mugs Café . During the week this hipster coffee house serves breakfast starting at 7 a.m. and locally roasted coffee all day long.
