Since spring 2015, Eurowings has been redeveloped into a low-cost airline for short- and long-haul flights.

At that time, Eurowings was the owner of Germanwings, thus creating a low-cost branch within the Lufthansa trust.

In September 2010 Eurowings closed its headquarters and technical infrastructure in Dortmund , Germany , and moved both to Dusseldorf, where Eurowings operated most of its flights since the airline was part of Lufthansa Regional.

All Eurowings flights operated on behalf of Lufthansa Regional ceased by autumn 2014 and were rebranded to Germanwings, the last ones to and from Dusseldorf.

In July 2014, the Lufthansa Group announced that Eurowings would replace its 23 Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft with 23 Airbus A320s.

Eurowings announced the establishment of its first base outside of Germany , at Vienna International Airport, where the aircraft were planned be operated by Austrian Airlines under the Eurowings brand.

Eurowings has been solely responsible for all sales under the Germanwings brand since October 2015.

From November 2015, Eurowings were offering one-way fares to destinations in the Caribbean and Thailand for as little as 99 euros.

Lufthansa stated that unexpected technical difficulties and a small fleet were to blame; Eurowings started its first seven long-haul routes with only one own aircraft.

In January 2016, Eurowings cancelled their planned service from Cologne to Tehran , and reduced Dubai flights from year-round to seasonal service.

Shortly after, Eurowings announced it would terminate its last route to Moscow , and therefore Russia , due to low demand.

Also in August 2016, Eurowings announced it would open its second Austrian base after Vienna , at Salzburg Airport, with flights to six European metropolitan destinations from January 2017.

On 15 February 2017, Eurowings retired their last Bombardier CRJ900 after a flight from Karlsruhe to Hamburg .

In February 2018, Eurowings announced the relocation of all its long-haul routes currently operated from Cologne Bonn Airport to Dusseldorf Airport, from which it already flies long-haul routes, by late October 2018 to strengthen their presence there.

In March 2019, the Lufthansa Group announced that starting in October 2019, Eurowings would introduce long-haul flights from Frankfurt Airport and further its Munich hub to expand Lufthansa's tourist-oriented presence and cooperation with these two hubs.

All long-haul flights operated by Eurowings will be transferred to other network airlines- Lufthansa , Brussels Airlines , Austrian Airlines , and Swiss.

Also in early 2021, Eurowings removed all of their long-haul destinations, which had been served from Dusseldorf, Munich and Frankfurt from their network.

Integration of Brussels Airlines within Eurowings was stopped during 2019; it will instead move closer to Lufthansa Network Airlines, and report as part of that operating segment from 2020.

Business and operating results of the Eurowings Group are fully incorporated into the Lufthansa Group accounts; key trends since 2015, when it moved towards the low cost model, are :.

Auf Wiedersehen: Eurowings leaves Russia

The Eurowings company cites lack of demand as the reason for the decision.

The Eurowings company cites lack of demand as the reason for the decision.

German low-cost carrier Eurowings will stop its Berlin-Moscow flight in Nov., according to Russian business daily Kommersant  (in Russian). The company cites lack of demand as the reason for the decision. A company spokesman quoted by Kommersant said that the Moscow flight "did not meet the company's expectations." Eurowings has yet to announce how it will compensate passengers holding tickets for the flight after Nov.

Russia’s budget airline Pobeda flying high despite PR scandals

Foreign airlines began leaving the Russian market en mass following the devaluation of the ruble in 2015. Low-cost carriers Air Berlin, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Easy Jet shut down their Russian routes altogether while larger airlines, including Lufthansa, Niki, El Al and SAS reduced the volume of flights to Russia.

Experts believe that Eurowings' decision to stop its Moscow flight is driven by different concerns, however. "In the last year and a half, the demand for flights to Germany has declined substantially," said Philipp Brinkmann, general director of the Tripsta online travel agency.

Germany was the most popular destination for Russian tourists in 2014, but in 2015, it dropped to second place, after Spain. "It is possible that Eurowings does not expect many seats to be filled in the autumn-winter season and therefore has now decided to stop its flights to Russia," Brinkmann said.

Andrei Kramarenko, an expert at the Center for Transportation Policy Studies at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, also does not connect the Eurowings decision to the mass departures of a year ago, suggesting instead that the decision was based on internal calculations. "Eurowings just preferred to use its fleet for more advantageous destinations," Kramarenko said. He added that the company might renew its flights to Russia next summer.

U.S. major Delta airlines also dropped its New York-Moscow flight in Oct. 2015, only to bring it back for the 2016 summer season.

Eurowings, which is a daughter company of Lufthansa Group, began regular flights between Moscow and Berlin six times a week in Oct. 2015. The low cost airline entered the Russian market after another German airline, Air Berlin, announced the cancellation of its flights to Russia.

Eurowings achieves historic profit turnaround

' src=

The airline Eurowings has achieved a record result thanks to strong demand and the restructuring carried out in recent years. Overall, the point-to-point business segment of Lufthansa Group, consisting of Eurowings and the stake in SunExpress, generated a positive result of 205 million euros (Adjusted EBIT) in 2023. The business segment, which specializes in affordable flights for business and leisure travelers, thus achieved a historic profit turnaround. In the previous year, there was still a loss of 197 million euros.

Eurowings’ financial turnaround is largely due to strategic changes since the Covid crisis. The significant expansion of the tourism business helped the Cologne-based company increase its turnover by 40 percent to around EUR 2.6 billion. Eurowings benefited in particular from the lasting desire to travel after the pandemic years and a summer season with new record numbers of guests, including to Mallorca. Eurowings operates a growing base here, connecting Europe’s favorite sunny island with 26 airports in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and the Czech Republic. This summer, Eurowings will offer more than 400 weekly connections to and from Palma for the first time – a new record. Among the more than 150 destinations in the Eurowings route network, the holiday hotspots of Greece, Italy and Spain also remain in high demand.

Kai Duve, Eurowings Chief Financial Officer (CFO): “The financial turnaround is not only a historic milestone for Eurowings, but first and foremost a strong team effort by our 5,000 employees, which deserves the highest recognition. We can see that our reorganization as a value airline for Europe is succeeding. As a result, we have developed from an airline with a strong domestic German focus into a leading European leisure airline. We will continue on this path, expand the tourism sector in a targeted manner and bring even more Eurowings to Europe in 2024.”
