For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2024 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Adventure Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Adventure Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten-path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Adventure Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 8-16 people and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Adventure Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Aventure Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Adventure Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Adventure Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

On your terms.

So you’re thinking of adventuring around the world? Good call. Sure, there’s no right way to do it. But there is “your way.” Want days filled with culture, followed by nights of just going with the flow? Do it. Want to go where the entire planet hasn’t already been, with free time to explore how you want? Make it happen. Want to travel far and wide with new friends from far-off places? You do you. Because in your life, you call the shots. Make sure you travel that way, too.

Five reasons to travel with us

Travel with an, international.

Going on our tours means travelling with people (22 or less, if you want to get precise) from all over the world. So on top of learning about the local culture, you'll also learn from your international crew.

The numbers speak for themselves: group travel is a safer way to see our world. Plus, our expert CEOs (Chief Experience Officers) have local knowledge you can count on as they lead you on your adventures.

Making it rain:

Not required.

Seeing the world shouldn’t require spending all your savings. With us, you’ll get the travel experience of a lifetime, plus good bang for your buck.

do your thing

We built our tour itineraries to feature a lot of free time, giving you the freedom to explore on your own, with your new crew, or whatever way suits your style.

A bit of this

A bit of that.

Like balance in your life? We can help. Our tours give you a healthy dose of culture during the day, before letting you get a taste for local bars and restaurants as the sun goes down.

Things you’ll get to experience.

Family tours

Family of Intrepid travellers group shot in Marrakech

Who needs a buffet and a ball pit when you've got the whole world to play in?

Designed by parents for kids, both big and small, our family trips are the kind you’ll reminisce about for years to come. Full of authentic cultural experiences, the kids will have plenty to brag about at school. Think: playing soccer with Maasai warriors in Kenya , learning ancient martial arts with Buddhist monks in South Korea or sleeping in a traditional Navajo hogan in Monument Valley. With child-friendly accommodations and a local leader to handle the logistics, you can focus on making core memories. Your sense of adventure doesn't disappear when you have kids, so why should your family vacation options be limited?

Our teenage family trips have a minimum age of 10 and offer more active itineraries for older children.

If your little ones love fairytales, they’ll love waking up in the regal rooms of a 17th-century palace in Alsisar, Rajasthan. Nestled in a desert town full of legendary stories, this hotel oozes history and grandeur with manicured gardens, colorful courtyards and dazzling dining rooms you could spend hours exploring.

Learn how to play the taiko, an ancient instrument traditionally used to initiate ceremonies and call soldiers to battle. Made from large wooden barrels with animal skin stretched over both ends, it produces a thunderous sound that vibrates through your entire body. Watch the experts play before grabbing a pair of bachi wooden sticks and having a bash yourself.

Say ahoy! (or xin chao) to your Vietnamese captain and set sail around the karst-studded waters of Ha Long Bay. Cruise among hundreds of limestone islets, drop anchor to explore caves filled with stalactites and jump in for a swim with an epic backdrop. After enjoying a tasty dinner, head out to the deck where you’ll be wowed by a sky speckled with stars.

Who needs video games when you have an ancient city to explore? Angkor Thom, home to the iconic Angkor Wat, was once the largest pre-industrial city in history. Hop in a tuk-tuk with a guide from Driver Srey – a female-owned social enterprise empowering local women – and watch the ruins come alive. Then, wind through Ta Prohm’s maze-like passageways tangled with giant tree roots.

Saddle up for a sunset camel trek through the stunning Sahara. After journeying along the windswept dunes, you’ll be greeted by our local friends for a night in a desert camp. Enjoy a feast of traditional foods like tagine, couscous and pastilla before settling into the silence of the desert and gazing up at the Milky Way. If you’re lucky, you may see a shooting star (or 10)

These trips are for families only – including any grandparents, aunts or uncles who’d like to join, of course. As long as you’re traveling with a child aged between 5 (or 10 for some itineraries) and 17, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, all travelers aged 17 and younger receive a 10% discount .

Our groups are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at family-run restaurants, and stay in traditional guesthouses and homestays.

Traveling with us is a bit like traveling with old friends. You’ll join a group of 3 to 5 families from all over the world, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away so you can enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find that families stay in touch long after the trip ends.

Boredom? Nope. The biggest challenge of traveling with kids is keeping them entertained, which is why our trips have plenty of fun activities and free time. We try to keep traveling time to a minimum and use hotels with pools. Your leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or curriculum.

Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you and the kids will be well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

As the world’s largest travel B Corp , we use travel as a force for good. We give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. When you travel with us, you travel with purpose.

2024-09-11T13:00:00+01:00

From sporty visits to iconic destinations, the Group Leisure & Travel Show has a range of interesting exhibitors that will be at the Marshall Arena on 3rd October in Milton Keynes. Here’s what they’re looking forward to.

Busy aisles at the Group Leisure & Travel Show 2023 in Milton Keynes

Meet a range of new exhibitors at the 2024 Group Leisure & Travel Show, alongside your favourite regulars.

Ever been to Bristol? One of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the  SS Great Britain  will be exhibiting at the Show for the first time. Group travel officer Lucy Grier, who will be on the stand on the day, said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting group travel organisers and chatting through ideas for a day out at Brunel’s SS Great Britain .

“It’s so rewarding to have that chance to talk through ideas that really suit each social club and group, which is when we start to add in ideas for behind-the-scenes tours of the Brunel Institute or a lunch or afternoon tea onboard the ship which is exclusive to group bookings.”

Manchester’s National Football Museum will be there to share its offer with visiting GTOs and coach tour operators. Janine Ross, marketing and communcations director told us: “It’s our first time at the show, so we are really excited about showcasing the National Football Museum and our incredible offer for groups. As one of the must-see attractions in Manchester, we are a memorable addition to any itinerary – and we love a good chat about the beautiful game, so please come and say hello.”

We are really looking forward to meeting group travel organisers face to face for the first time.”

For inspiration closer to home, Visit Blackpool will be there on the 3rd October to inspire group organisers with a visit to Lancashire. Mandy Tythe-McCallum, tourism services manager, said: “We’re excited to meet new business contacts and share what’s going on in Blackpool. The resort has seen quite a lot of change in recent years, multiple investment projects that are all contributing to and enhancing the visitor experience.

“We also have a year-round programme of events, many of which are free and all family friendly. It’ll be great to get those messages out to a different audience.”

Thursford Christmas Spectacular

The team from Thursford Christmas Spectacular will also be available on the day, offering groups an insight into its variety performance every year. We’re looking forward to showcasing the Thursford brand and everything we can offer tour and coach operators, hotels and groups.”

Doc Holiday: Which tour groups are best for travellers with a disability?

Travelling can be a challenge for people with a disability. Luckily, there are companies that cater for their needs.

Dilvin Yasa

Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Escape's Doc Holiday, Dilvin Yasa, answers your travel-related questions.

I’m in my 60s and have MS, with limited mobility but would still love to travel. Are there any companies that specialise in assisting those with extra requirements?

There are plenty of accessible travel tour companies, some which offer tours around the globe, and others who focus on showcasing their own backyard. For the former you may wish to take a look at Responsible Travel, Wheel the World, Tapooz Travel and Easy Access Travel, while Iceland Unlimited and Morocco Accessible Travel will give you an idea of how the latter work.

Au revoir, Paris! These are the most charming towns to visit in France

Although classic tour companies such as Intrepid Travel do not offer general itineraries designed around travellers with disabilities, they have a “Tailor-Made” experiences team who will speak to you about your travel desires and requirements to assess whether you’ll be able to complete one of their existing itineraries, or whether they’ll be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs. If they have the numbers, they can also look at developing custom itineraries and special departures for a variety of travellers, including those with disabilities, so it’s always a good idea to give them a call to see what they can suggest.

Cruising is an excellent choice for those with mobility issues, so take a look at some voyages which might be of interest but just remember to pay attention to whether any tenders will be used during the itinerary you’re looking at.

Excellent MS travel sites such as activemsers.org detail the ins and outs of cruising with MS.

Travelling to recent Olympic/Paralympic cities such as Paris and Tokyo might be a solid option for travellers with mobility issues.

There’s been a lot of talk lately that travelling to recent Olympic/Paralympic cities such as Paris and Tokyo might be a more solid option for travellers with mobility issues since they have had to meet certain benchmarks to make attractions and transport accessible for all.

There’s certainly been an improvement – almost all of the bus lines and bus stops in Paris are now accessible to wheelchair users, as are trams, but if we consider that less than 10 per cent of the metro system is accessible, getting around easily can still present a challenge.

Another option to consider is an African safari , an adventure many travellers with MS swear by since much of the travel is undertaken by vehicle and the lodges are predominantly spacious and accessible. Operators who specialise in offering safaris for those with mobility issues include Sasiani African Safaris.

There’s nothing to say you can’t squeeze in a visit to Burj Khalifa.

Is it practical to do a transit tour of Dubai with a six-hour layover on our way to Athens?

There are two types of travellers: those who like to be at the airport three hours before their international flight takes off, and those who are happy to fly by the seat of their pants. I like to play it safe, so if we take into account the 40 minutes to an hour it will take you to get through immigration, the two-hour minimum you’ll need at departure, plus transfer times (around 20 minutes each way), I would be pretty stressed doing a tour in under three hours.

But if you identify as a free spirit (or just really hate the idea of spending six hours in an airport), there are two-hour tours (with airport transfers) you can book through Viator, or you can ask a guide through GetYourGuide to tweak their three-hour tours for you.

If you’d prefer to do your own thing, a great way of seeing as much of Dubai as possible within a short time frame is to join the hop-on/hop-off Big Bus Dubai sightseeing tour. Provided you don’t actually get off, it will take in all the major sites within two hours and the last stop on the Red Route is Zabeel Park, from which it is a short cab ride back to the airport.

A great way of seeing as much of Dubai as possible within a short time frame is to join the hop-on/hop-off Big Bus Dubai sightseeing tour.

There’s nothing to say you can’t squeeze in a visit to Burj Khalifa, the souks, or the attractions around the gargantuan (and mercifully, airconditioned) Dubai Mall, but you’ll have to choose just one of these and factor in heavy traffic if your transit falls during the afternoon rush period.

Taxis are often the quickest way to get around, except during peak hours when you’re better off taking the Metro. Just beware that some Metro stations may not be close to where you need to be, necessitating some heavy-duty walking in suffocating desert heat.

My top tip for anyone heading out on a quick tour of Dubai? Say no to denim.

Pretty Greek island with hidden beaches and coves overlooked by tourists

Evia Island is the second-largest Greek island, but is often overlooked by tourists who head to the likes of Crete, Corfu, Mykonos and Santorini instead

From Crete and Corfu to Mykonos and Santorini, the Greek islands are undoubtedly some of Europe's top holiday spots. Yet, with 6,000 islands and islets, 227 of which are inhabited, there are plenty of lesser-known gems too.

One such under-the-radar destination is Evia Island. Also known as Euboea, it's Greece's second-largest island, roughly half the size of Crete.

Evia boasts stunning beaches, scenic hiking trails, and remnants of ancient temples and relics. Despite being an island, Evia is conveniently connected to mainland Greece by two bridges, allowing tourists to reach it by car from Athens in about an hour and a half.

Evia also offers secluded coves and is home to Edipsos, famed for its thermal springs with reputed healing properties. Travel experts at Club Med have flagged up Evia as one of the top destinations to visit this autumn for those seeking a quieter, more relaxing overseas trip.

Charente-Maritime, located in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region on France's southwestern coast, and Cefalu, a town on Sicily's northern coast, also made the list, reports the Mirror .

Evia Island

According to the experts, the best times to visit Evia are from mid-April to early June and late-September to October, when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities and exploration.

Nicolas Bresch, Managing Director at Club Med, observed a notable change in travel preferences, remarking: "There is a shift in demand of travellers moving away from crowded spots and opting for more peaceful and secluded destinations where they can take their time exploring."

He further elaborated on the trend, stating: "This shift towards quieter, less crowded places reflects a positive change in how people approach travel. They're focusing more on personal, relaxing trips where they can fully experience different cultures. This growing trend is great because it could ease the strain on popular tourist sites and help boost tourism in other areas."

DWP travel rules and when your Universal Credit and PIP benefits can stop if you go on holiday

There are strict rules in place for benefit claimants who go abroad - and flouting the rules could result in payments being reduced or stopped or even court prosecution

  • 08:14, 9 SEP 2024

If you claim benefits like Universal Credit or PIP, it's important to know the travel rules

Benefit claimants could have their payments stopped if they break DWP rules in place for people going abroad.

The Department for Work and Pensions has put a new system in place for formally reporting travel plans if you are claiming Universal Credit. And there are also restrictions for other benefits including Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Jobseeker's Allowance and Pension Credit.

Claimants who go overseas without informing the DWP about their trip or who stay away too long may find their payments cut, officials said. Under the new Labour government, the DWP has now included an option for declaring travelling outside Great Britain under the list of Universal Credit changes in circumstances that should be reported.

  • Read More: Universal Credit and PIP claimants warned of new DWP changes to assessments

Get all the latest money news and budgeting tips from Chronicle Live with our free newsletter

Many claimants say they've received online alerts notifying them of the new option when they logged into their account, reports BirminghamLive. People receiving Universal Credit are now being told to declare "any past, present or future visits" to countries outside Britain.

They must tell the DWP if they are going overseas in the next 30 days or have done so at any time since their claim started, as well as giving the reason, dates and destination. The DWP says people claiming Universal Credit can go abroad for up to one month at a time. They're allowed more than one of these trips in a year as long as they're back home for at least a month as the Universal Credit eligibility rules require people to live in the UK.

An additional month can be approved if a close relative dies while you're away and it would not be reasonable for you to come back to the UK any earlier. In addition, anyone going overseas for medical treatment or so they or their child can recuperate from illness may be permitted to be away for up to six months.

If a prolonged absence doesn't meet these criteria, then Universal Credit entitlement is reduced to nil so that no payment is made on the next due date. In most cases, your Universal Credit claim won't be terminated altogether so you won't have to apply all over again but you won't get any benefit payment covering the period you've been away.

The DWP warned: "You need to report changes as soon as they happen. Any delay may mean you receive too much money and will have to make a repayment. You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances."

Other benefits have their own travel rules. Although income-based Jobseeker's Allowance - currently being replaced by Universal Credit - can't be claimed abroad, you can get New Style Jobseeker's Allowance (which is based on National Insurance contributions) in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for as long as three months if you're travelling to look for work. You'll need to sign on in the UK as a jobseeker four weeks before leaving and then register with the equivalent of a jobcentre in the country where you're heading.

Contribution-based ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) can be claimed abroad for four weeks but this can be extended to 26 weeks if you are travelling overseas to get medical treatment for yourself or your child. It can be possible to still receive this benefit for as long as a year while you are in the EEA or Switzerland if you have paid enough National Insurance contributions and are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement.

Those on PIP, Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance must tell the DWP if going away for more than four weeks but are generally allowed to keep claiming these disability benefits while abroad for up to 13 weeks, increasing to twice that long if their trip is for medical treatment. Up to four weeks abroad every six months is allowed for those on Carer's Allowance.

Guidance for PIP says officials need to know of a trip exceeding four weeks because it may affect the claimant's entitlement to the benefit. The DWP said: "We will need to know the date the claimant is leaving the country, how long they are planning to be out of the country, which country they are going to and why they are going abroad.

"It is important the claimant tells DWP straight away about any changes in their life that could affect their benefit. Based on these changes their benefit may go up, go down, stay the same or it may stop. If the claimant is overpaid, they will normally have to repay the money. Failure to tell DWP about any of these changes may result in prosecution."

Recipients of the pensioners' top-up benefit Pension Credit can carry on receiving their payments overseas for up to four weeks provided they still meet the eligibility rules while they are away and they've told the DWP's Pension Service beforehand. If the trip has been made because of the death of a close relative such as a partner or child, or if they die while you're away, this timeframe can be doubled, and if it's for medical treatment or convalescence the time allowed overseas may be extended to 26 weeks.
