What should your Travel Insurance cover for a trip to Ireland?

When it comes to international travel, the US Department of State  outlines key components that should be included in your travel insurance coverage. AXA Travel Protection plans are designed with these minimum recommended coverages in mind.

Imagine you've planned an exciting journey to Ireland, ready to explore the historic sites and savor the scenic beauty. On the day of your departure, however, you receive news of unexpected severe weather conditions affecting your connecting flight. The airport announces a significant delay, leaving you stranded and unsure about the next steps. Here's where the "Trip Delay" benefit comes to your rescue. With this coverage, you can rest assured that your additional expenses, such as meals and accommodations during the unforeseen delay, are taken care of. In times of escalating challenges, AXA stands ready to assist you in devising a strategic course of action. Here’s how travelers can benefit from an AXA Travel Protection Plan:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits:

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
  • Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.
  • Loss Skier Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate some costs associated with pre-paid ski tickets that you or your traveling companion cannot use due to specified slope closures.
  • Loss Golf Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate the expenses linked to prepaid golf arrangements that you or your travel companion are unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Ireland?

You don't have to get travel insurance for an Irish visa, but it's a good idea to follow the official advice and get yourself covered.  Here are several reasons why securing travel insurance for Ireland is recommended:

Medical Emergencies: While Ireland offers free healthcare to EU and UK residents, travelers from other regions may face substantial medical expenses in case of illness or injury. Having coverage for emergency medical expenses becomes essential so you can receive necessary medical care without worrying about hefty bills.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.

Trip Delays: Given Ireland's unpredictable weather conditions, having coverage for unexpected delays can be particularly relevant. Whether it's due to adverse weather affecting flights or other unforeseen circumstances, this benefit may cover additional expenses for meals and accommodations incurred while you wait for your flight.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Ireland?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Ireland will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Ireland hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses.

The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Ireland’s experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Ireland's stunning landscapes in a rental car. The "Loss Golf Days" benefit offered by the Platinum Plan is particularly beneficial for travelers visiting Ireland, a country renowned for its world-class golf courses. In the event of unexpected closures impacting your prepaid golf plans, this optional coverage offers reimbursement, allowing your golfing experience to remain pleasurable despite unforeseen disruptions.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency Medical
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency medical: Covers unforeseen events such as fractures, burns, sudden illnesses, and allergic reactions.

Emergency evacuation and repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-medical emergency evacuation and repatriation:  Assists in situations requiring immediate departure from a destination due to non-medical incidents. These events may include natural disasters or civil unrest, and the coverage provides support for evacuation.

Are there any COVID-19 restrictions for travelers to Ireland?

As of March 2022, all COVID-19 travel restrictions have been lifted. There is no requirement to fill out a passenger locator form, provide proof of vaccination or recovery, or undergo a COVID-19 test.

Traveling with pre-existing Medical Conditions?

Traveling with pre-existing medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip.   Our Gold and Platinum  plans offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.  The Platinum plan, in particular, is our highest-offered choice for travelers who want our highest coverage limits and optional add-ons,

What does this mean for you? If you've got a medical condition that's been hanging around, you can qualify for coverage under our Gold and Platinum plan with a pre-existing medical condition , so long as it’s within 14 days of placing your initial trip deposit and in our 60-day look-back period. We're here to ensure you travel easily, no matter your health situation.

1. Can you buy travel insurance after booking a flight?

You can buy travel insurance even after your flight is booked.

2. When should I buy Travel Insurance for Ireland?

It's advisable to purchase travel insurance for your trip as soon as you have made your initial trip deposit (prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.) AXA Travel Protection offers coverage as soon as you purchase your protection plan. We can give coverage against unforeseen events before you leave for your trip. Additionally, our policies offer coverage for preexisting medical conditions and Cancel for Any Reason if you purchase your protection within 14 days of making your initial trip deposit.

3. Do Americans need travel insurance in Ireland?

Travel insurance is not mandatory for U.S. visitors to Ireland. However, having coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and rental cars can protect you from financial losses due to unforeseen circumstances and costly medical expenses.

4. What is needed to visit Ireland from the USA?

To enter Ireland, a valid passport is required. U.S. citizens can enjoy visa-free entry for tourism or business stays lasting up to 90 days. While there is no specific minimum passport validity requirement, it is advisable to possess a passport valid for the entire duration of your stay. Additionally, it is recommended to have evidence of ample funds to support your stay and a return airline ticket.

Table of Contents

  • Allianz Travel Insurance
  • Travelex Insurance Services

You almost certainly will want travel insurance for Europe, mostly because the high cost for international trips is worth protecting against travel delays and trip cancellations. Since your U.S. medical coverage will not apply overseas, you also need international health insurance that covers surprise medical expenses and medical evacuation.

If you're searching for the best Europe travel insurance that money can buy, consider the following plans and all they have to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people need travel health insurance at a bare minimum when traveling to European destinations like France, Italy or Switzerland, as well as additional countries inside and outside of the Schengen area. After all, U.S. health insurance plans do not provide coverage for medical emergencies overseas, and the same is true for government health plans like Medicare. Check out our article on whether your health insurance covers international travel .

Other benefits built into Europe travel insurance plans can also protect the money that's been spent on airfare, hotel stays, Europe cruises and tours. For example, travelers can benefit from having coverage for trip cancellation, trip delays, lost or delayed baggage, and more.

Every travel insurance policy is unique, so you'll want to read over individual travel insurance plans to see what they protect against. That said, the bulk of travel insurance plans for trips to Europe provide the following coverages:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Travel delays
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Baggage delay coverage
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Rental car damage

Some travel insurance plans also offer additional or optional coverage for sports equipment or sports equipment delays, missed connections, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), adventure sports and more.

Some visitors to countries in the Schengen area are required to have a visa for short stays that can last for up to 90 days within a timeline of up to 180 days. However, this is not the case for American citizens, who can stay in Europe for up to 90 days at a time without meeting specific visa requirements.

The U.S. Department of State also notes that American citizens who want to stay in Europe for more than 90 days should reach out to the country they plan on visiting to inquire about their visa process.

If you live in a country that requires a Schengen visa, you are required to purchase Schengen visa insurance that pays for overseas medical expenses. This coverage must provide at least 30,000 euros in protection against medical expenses that result from hospitalization, emergency treatment and repatriation of remains in the case of accident or death.

Shortly after your reservation is confirmed, you’ll get an email confirming your insurance purchase. That email will include your insurance certificate as well as a link to your policy details page, where you can cancel your policy, start a claim, and more.

Making changes to your reservation

If the dates of your reservation change (or if the guest count changes), your reservation insurance will be automatically updated. If the change impacts the total cost of your reservation, your reservation insurance premium will be adjusted, and you’ll be charged or refunded accordingly.

What’s covered

Reservation insurance through Europ Assistance covers:

  • Reservation cancellation: Get reimbursed (up to 100% of your Airbnb reservation cost) if you cancel your Airbnb reservation for a covered reason. Covered reasons include serious illness or injury; a flight delay due to mechanical breakdown; and a natural disaster at your home or destination.
  • Medical assistance: Get help paying (up to €50,000 per person) for emergency and pre-authorised medical services you need while travelling abroad, such as hospitalisation costs, medication prescribed by a doctor, and ambulance journeys ordered by a doctor. (Please note that the €50,000 per person limit applies to residents of all EU countries where reservation insurance is offered except Germany, where medical assistance coverage is unlimited.)
  • Delayed departure: Get reimbursed (up to €750 per person) for reasonable expenses you incur because your trip is delayed for 12 hours or more for a covered reason. Covered reasons include a storm, fire, or flood at the departure point; mechanical breakdown of your vehicle; and loss of travel documents or money.
  • Luggage: Get reimbursed (up to €1,000 per person) if your luggage is damaged by your carrier, stolen, or permanently lost.
  • Luggage delay: Get reimbursed (up to €250 per person) for necessary purchases you make because your luggage is delayed by your carrier for more than 24 hours. Covered expenses may include clothing, food, and toiletries.
  • Sporting equipment: Get reimbursed (up to €1,000 per person) if your sporting equipment is damaged by your carrier, stolen, or lost permanently.
  • Sporting equipment delay: Get reimbursed (up to €1,000 per person) for the cost of sporting equipment rentals if your sporting equipment is delayed for more than 24 hours.
  • Reservation curtailment: Get reimbursed (up to 125% of your Airbnb reservation cost) for nights you can’t stay at your Airbnb accommodation, and additional transportation expenses you incur, because your trip is delayed or cut short for a covered reason. Covered reasons include serious illness or injury; delay of a flight, train, or boat; and passport theft.
  • Personal accident: Get reimbursed (up to €100,000 per person) if you’re injured in an accident while you’re on your trip, resulting in permanent total disability or the loss of your life, limb, or sight.
  • Travel documents: Get reimbursed (up to 10 days at €80 per night) for additional travel and accommodation expenses you incur because your passport or ID are lost or stolen while you’re traveling abroad.

Coverage for COVID-19

Although pandemics aren’t covered by reservation insurance, COVID-19 is covered in some situations because it’s considered to be a serious illness. Serious illness is a covered reason under the reservation cancellation, medical assistance, and reservation curtailment benefits.

Please note that if you file a claim due to COVID-19, you’ll be asked to provide documentation showing that you, a family member (for example, your child), or someone staying with you at the Airbnb accommodation tested positive while under the virtual or in-person supervision of a qualified medical professional.

What’s not covered

As is the case with all insurance policies, there are terms, conditions, and exclusions that apply. Generally, foreseeable events and events that aren’t named in the policy aren’t covered.

Specifically, EU residents should know that the Europ Assistance policy doesn’t include certain travel costs: You can't get reimbursed for the cost of planned transport (flights, trains, ferries, etc.) to and from your Airbnb accommodation if you need to cancel your reservation before you depart on your trip.

Who’s covered

Every policy covers the guest who purchased it and the people who are staying with them at the Airbnb accommodation. These people don’t have to be added to the Airbnb reservation or named on the policy in order to be covered, and there are no age restrictions.

Updating your policy

Your reservation insurance will be automatically updated if you change the dates of your Airbnb reservation, or the guest count.

If the change impacts the cost of your reservation, your reservation insurance premium will be adjusted and you’ll be charged or refunded accordingly.

Canceling your policy

Residents of France can cancel within 30 days of purchase. Please note that you can’t cancel your policy after you’ve departed on your trip or started a claim, even if you’re within the 30-day period.

To cancel your policy, just go to your policy details page and select Cancel policy. Alternatively, you can send an email to [email protected] .

We’re working really hard to keep you in the loop as much as possible in the fast-changing circumstances.

We want to help you wherever we can during these challenging times. If you’re struggling financially as a result of Coronavirus and are worried about the payments for your policy, or if you have a policy that you don’t think you’ll need now, such as an annual travel policy, please get in touch. We’ll discuss your options with you and work out how we can provide support.

Our call centres are very busy at the moment and we are trying to answer your questions as quickly as we can. If your query is non-urgent and you are not due to travel in the next two weeks, please don’t contact us yet, so we can prioritise people in need of urgent help or who are due to travel sooner.

In the meantime, we are regularly monitoring the situation and updating our Coronavirus single trip/backpacker and annual multi-trip FAQ pages. To find out more about the impact the outbreak is having on our travel insurance policies, please check the relevant FAQ before calling or emailing us.

We’d also like to highlight that travel insurance only protects against unforeseen circumstances getting in the way of your travel plans, so any policy you buy now will have very limited insurance coverage. While the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has advised against all but essential travel indefinitely, you will not be covered under our travel insurance policies if you decide to go ahead with your trip.

Travel Insurance for Europe

europ assistance travel insurance ireland

Whether you’re planning a Parisian city break or beach holiday in the Canary Islands, Europe offers a diverse range of destinations for every type of traveller.

While holidays to France are all about culture and great food, trips to Iceland allow you to see Europe’s wilderness and wildlife at its best – you can even witness the majestic beauty of the Northern Lights! Alternatively, you can take a trip as far away as Russia, and learn more about the country’s history, or be mesmerised by the grandeur of the Red Square. If you’d rather shop until you drop, try Milan’s gorgeous designer boutiques.

With so much choice, it can be hard to pick just one destination, which is why interrailing has become so popular. You can leave with your backpack and explore everything this beautiful continent has to offer on one trip. If you’re taking an extended break in Europe, then our Backpacker insurance could be a good fit.

Below is some more information about our insurance products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

Why do you need travel insurance for Europe?

You may think that travel insurance isn’t as important when you’re staying closer to home, but the truth is, things can still go wrong.

For example, your flight might be cancelled, your luggage may be lost, or your valuables could be stolen by pickpockets at busy tourist attractions. Thankfully, travel insurance can help protect you against these risks and more. Accidents can happen wherever you are but, with European travel insurance, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re protected if something doesn’t go to plan.

What does our European travel insurance cover?

At Allianz, we offer a level of insurance that’s appropriate for most travellers. You can choose either a Single Trip , Annual or Backpacker policy, depending on how you travel. You can also choose between our Bronze, Silver or Gold levels of cover.

Depending on which policy you choose, you’ll be protected against:

·     Cancelling your trip, or cutting it short

  • Loss of money*

Frequently Asked Questions

What countries are included in european travel insurance .

  • The Republic of Ireland
  • The Channel Islands
  • The Isle of Man
  • Continental Europe
  • Mediterranean islands
  • Canary Islands

If you’re staying close to home, then you can choose ‘UK/Ireland’ as your area of cover. This will provide you with cover if you’re travelling to somewhere else in the Republic of Ireland, the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

*Please note that you will not be covered if you travel to a country or region that the Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against all travel, or against all but essential travel.

Do I need travel insurance if I have an EHIC card?

If you’re travelling within the European Economic Area (EEA), then an EHIC card is an important document to have. However, it is not a replacement for European travel insurance.

The card entitles you to cheaper (or sometimes free) emergency treatment in a number of EEA countries. Although the card entitles you to the same treatment as local citizens, you should be aware that many countries will not pay the full cost of healthcare for people who have a card, so you may still have to pay for some parts of your treatment. Similarly, the EHIC does not cover any medical treatment in a private hospital or clinic, the cost of additional accommodation or the cost of bringing you back home.

For this reason, you should still take out travel insurance for Europe. This way, your medical bills will be included in your cover, and you’ll also be covered for things like cancellations, delayed flights and delayed personal possessions.

I'm holidaying in Ireland; do I still need to buy travel insurance?

I'll be driving in europe; is there anything i should be aware of.

If you’re travelling around Europe by car, then you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in some European countries. This will allow you to drive a private motor vehicle abroad when accompanied by a valid driving licence. It is valid for one year from the date of issue and you can apply online. You should also notify your vehicle insurer that you’ll be taking your vehicle out of the Republic of Ireland, and ensure you’re adequately covered for your trip.

Before you travel, you should also purchase our European Breakdown Cover . This way, if you’re unfortunate enough to breakdown on your journey, we’ll get you back on the road as quickly as possible. If we can’t fix your car within 4 hours, we’ll do all we can to get you back on your journey with a courtesy car, onward rail fare or overnight accommodation.

Before you set off, you should also check what extra equipment you may require in the countries you’re driving in. This may include items like a breathalyser, a reflective jacket, a warning triangle or snow chains and winter tyres. These can vary depending on the country you’re driving in, and the time of year you’re travelling.

While you’re away, you should always carry your driving licence, IDP (if required), original vehicle registration document and passport. You should also display the IRL national identification letters on your vehicle (and any caravan or trailer you are towing) when travelling outside the EU. Depending on where you’re travelling to, you may also need to display an emissions sticker on your windscreen.

Check the rules and regulations for the countries you’re visiting carefully before you travel to make sure you have everything you need.
