Come ride the Little Bighorn Battlefield with us

If you don't hear both sides,

you don't know what really happened.

Don't miss the opportunity to  stare out across this historic, sacred land and truly see the terrain as the warriors and troopers saw it on that legendary day   - June 25th, 1876.

Traverse the battlefield on horseback and understand how Lakota, Cheyenne & Arapaho warriors defeated the US Army on the  Greasy Grass at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho and Crow warriors' accounts of the fight differ to those from the military, and have often been discounted by historians whose book deals dominated the telling of the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

But when a visitor accidentally started a 600 acre fire that consumed the battlefield in 1983, what seemed like a disaster resuted in the confirmation of many of those tribal accounts. Teams with metal detectors discovered the positioning of shells/ordinance and other relics were more consistent with how Native American warriors told the story!

Understanding the military maneuvers of Custer,  Reno and Benteen is important , but  hearing unpublished storie s preserved in the  oral tradition and passed to warrior's descendents is too.

I went to Wolf Park with a group of 32 and the staff was very friendly with accommodating us. It is a great place for group or family visits, try to go for the whole 3 hours on the days they have events going on. There are many wolves, foxes, and bison that you can see.

This is a wonderful alternative to animal watching. The park's involvement with wolves is to be admired. Personnel are knowledgeable and the wolves are so very special. Our grandchildren love this place. The night programs are especially fun!

Great experience to bring the family to. The guide was super knowledgeable and made the whole experience allot of fun. We got to give ice treats to the pups and everyone had a good experience and learned about wolves and foxes.

A group of us visited in the afternoon for the tour, then came back in the evening for the howl. Highly recommend doing both, as the information and experiences are different and both are amazing. The social behavior of the wolves is complicated and deserves the study this facility is doing. The social attitude of people towards wolves (usually negative) would change if they understood all the wolves contribute to the ecosystem.

8 Things To Know Before Visiting Little Bighorn Battlefield

battle ground tour

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • National Parks
  • United States
  • United States National Parks

The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is located within the Crow Indian Reservation near the intersection of Highway 212 and Interstate 90, about 60 miles east of Billings, Montana.

This is where, in 1876, a group of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho Native Americans defeated the United States 7th Cavalry Regiment in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, also called the Battle of the Greasy Grass or Custer’s Last Stand.

The road from the highway to the site entrance leads gently uphill, with even higher hills ahead. The first thing I noticed was a field of uniform white headstones — unmistakably a military cemetery.

This is Custer National Cemetery , with approximately 5,000 graves. It was established after the battle and was later expanded. The lovely Superintendent’s Lodge , a two-story stone building from 1894, was one of the first permanent dwellings constructed in eastern Montana. Some believe that it is haunted . I’m happy to say that while I was certainly moved by the site, I had no supernatural experiences.

I browsed the selection of gifts and books in the visitor center and watched an introductory presentation. Later I was glad to come back for a break from the heat.

During your visit, you can walk or drive up Last Stand Hill to the two major monuments. The Deep Ravine walking trail leads down into the valley toward the river. Signs warn you to stay on the trails. Rattlesnakes were a good enough reason for me to do that!

A driving route with a self-guided cell phone audio tour runs for about 4.5 miles along the ridges to the Reno-Benteen Defense Site . The scenery is spectacular, vast, open, and quiet.

Here are eight things to know before planning a visit to the site.

1. It’s Hard To Separate Fact From Fiction

The causes, events, and results of the battle are some of the most exhaustively studied pieces of American history, and controversies and questions abound. People have criticized Custer’s leadership, the other commanders’ actions, the Cavalry’s equipment, and so on. For many years afterward, people came forward claiming to be the sole survivor. Here are some of the basic, well-established facts.

On June 25, 1876, General George Armstrong Custer led part of the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army in an attack against an encampment of Native Americans in the valley of the Little Bighorn River. He and the 209 others with him were killed. The rest of the 7th, led by Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen, fared better, but the Native Americans had unquestionably shattered the myth of the unbeatable cavalry.

Estimates of the number of Native American deaths vary widely, from at least 30 out of 1,500 to possibly 3,000. In the 7th Cavalry Regiment, 274 out of about 700 were killed.

2. The Full Story Is Complicated

The U.S. government was determined to relocate all Native Americans in the area to reservations. Not all agreed to go.

The full story is a complicated tale of alliances, deals, betrayals, and — more recently — attempts at understanding. The blog Native Hope says, “To understand this battle means one must peel back many layers, but even then, there will be more accounts, more broken promises, and more tragedies added to its complexity.”

The main thing to know is that the Little Bighorn site is part of a history that is still being written.

3. Perspectives On The Battle Have Changed Since 1876

As a Canadian, I first heard of Custer’s Last Stand on American television. Cartoons and comedians made General Custer the butt of their jokes. Oddly, this still happens.

Custer’s notable loss notwithstanding, many Westerns glorified the seemingly invincible U.S. Cavalry appearing over the hill.

For years after the battle, Custer and his men were considered heroes in the cause of settling the West. Custer faded to a household name, but with less of a mystique, over time. After the two World Wars, the events of the 1800s belonged to historians, not newspapers.

In the 1970 movie Little Big Man , Custer was depicted as a madman. The Native Americans were portrayed as individuals, not stereotypes.

That same year brought Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown. The American Indian Movement was underway. The Indians of All Tribes group occupied Alcatraz in protest.

In 1991, the name of the battlefield was changed from Custer’s Battlefield to Little Bighorn Battlefield.

Over time, more non-Native Americans began to understand that the mass slaughter of the buffalo on the prairies had abruptly ended the way of life of the Plains people in Canada and the U.S. It first hit me when I visited the Fort Walsh National Historic Site in Saskatchewan. While there, I learned about Sitting Bull, a Native American leader at Little Bighorn.

4. You’ll See Both White Marble And Red Granite Markers

Climbing Last Stand Hill, I was a bit surprised to see headstones scattered here and there.

The 7th Cavalry was so depleted that the best the men could do for their comrades after the battle was to dig shallow graves and try to be respectful. For years, there were attempts to find and bury whatever remains could be found. Some were sent back east for interment.

In 1890, Company D of the 25th Infantry placed 249 white marble headstones on the hillside to indicate where individual soldiers had died.

The Native American warriors’ families took their bodies away soon after the battle. Starting in 1999, red granite markers were placed on the battlefield to show the places where the Native American warriors fell.

5. Custer’s Remains Were Transferred From The Site Of The 7th U.S. Cavalry Memorial

The tall 7th U.S. Cavalry Memorial at the top of Last Stand Hill was erected in 1881. Below it, a mass grave holds the remains of the 7th Cavalry Regiment members.

A year after the battle, Custer’s remains were transferred from the battlefield to West Point Cemetery in New York.

6. An Indian Memorial Was Recently Dedicated

The 2003 dedication of the Indian Memorial , also on the hilltop, changed the appearance and significance of the entire site. In 2019, a final dedication ceremony marked the completion of the memorial.

You can walk through and around the Indian Memorial, with a view of the landscape in each of the four directions. A simple wrought-iron sculpture makes a line drawing of spirit warriors on horseback, the sky behind and inside them.

It isn’t just the Lakota and the Cheyenne who are remembered here. The memorial honors their Arapaho allies and the Crow and Arikara who scouted for the 7th Cavalry.

7. There’s Even A Cemetery For The Horses

Many horses died in the battle. The 7th Cavalry shot some of their horses to make a last-ditch defensive wall. There’s a marker for the 1881 7th Cavalry Horse Cemetery on Last Stand Hill.

8. After The Battle, Sitting Bull And Crazy Horse Continued To Resist Relocation

Sitting Bull, a spiritual leader and chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux, had a vision of soldiers falling into his camp like grasshoppers raining from the sky. The vision united and inspired others, including Crazy Horse and Chief Gall. They believed they would win a great battle.

The victory at Little Bighorn was decisive, but it didn’t end the war. The U.S. Army retaliated, still determined to move the Native Americans onto reservations.

On May 6, 1877, Crazy Horse surrendered. He died on September 5, 1877, of a bayonet wound.

Sitting Bull stayed in the U.S. for almost a year, but between the buffalo growing scarce and pressure from the Army, it was difficult. On May 5, 1877, Sitting Bull and his followers traveled north into Canada, where some other American Sioux were already living.

The buffalo were being hunted to extinction in Canada, too. Hungry and perhaps believing in promises of better treatment in the U.S., Sitting Bull returned with some of his people in 1881. He was killed by Indian agency police in 1890.

Harris to embark on a seven-state campaign blitz with her VP pick

Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump.

It will be a critical week for Harris, who is rushing to introduce herself to voters with just three months until Election Day. It will also be the first time she will appear with her yet-to-be-announced running mate.

Starting Tuesday, Harris will campaign across seven swing states over five days, one of the heaviest weeks of campaign-related travel in the general election.

Her team has vetted six contenders to be her running mate: Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Walz, Shapiro and Kelly each met separately with Harris on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the meetings.

Harris is set to appear alongside her running mate for the first time Tuesday in Philadelphia , where the pair will kick off the cross-country tour.

Her travel swing is a stark contrast to the pace of Trump and President Joe Biden. Trump has delivered remarks in 10 states since the June 27 debate, while Biden traveled to campaign stops in eight states during the final 24 days of his candidacy. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time.

Harris will visit five states that she and Biden flipped blue in 2020: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. She will also make stops in North Carolina, which Biden lost by a slim margin, and Nevada, where Democrats won narrowly.

The trip highlights the generational gap between Harris compared with Biden and Trump, Democratic allies said.

Biden’s candidacy was consistently plagued by voter concerns about his age, and his final weeks as the presumptive nominee were punctuated by a stream of congressional Democrats urging him to pass the torch to a new generation.

“Age really does matter” when it comes to a candidate’s ability to commit to long campaign trips, said Amanda Renteria, who was the national political director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

Harris, 59, is a generation younger than Trump, 78, and Biden, 81.

In 2020, Biden was the oldest presidential winner in history. If elected, Trump would be the oldest sitting president by the end of his term.

“It is amazing what candidates can do when they’re traveling around, and you don’t know what time it is, and you don’t know what day it is, but everyone’s in it,” she said. “And you can only sustain that for so long. And when you’re at the age of Trump, I don’t know how you keep up with that.”

Trump is scheduled this week to hold a rally Friday and deliver remarks at a dinner in Montana, a state he won in 2020 with 56.9% of the vote. He is also scheduled to hold a fundraiser Saturday in Colorado, which Biden won by a similar margin in 2020. Neither state is considered to be a swing state.

Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips.

"In this cycle, President Trump has by far visited more battleground states, held more rallies, held more fundraisers, done more interviews and engaged with local reporters," Cheung said of Trump, who launched his campaign more than a year and a half before Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

"Kamala Harris can’t even give a simple media interview since she was anointed the Democrat nominee," he continued. Harris has not held a sit-down media interview since Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, though she has answered journalists' questions in media gaggles.

In the days after Biden's widely panned June debate in Georgia, his campaign was in damage control mode. Biden spoke at a North Carolina rally and traveled to fundraisers in New York, New Jersey and Virginia before he held a rally in Wisconsin.

His next campaign trips were to Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada, the last of which was cut short when he contracted Covid. Days later, he dropped out of the race.

Democratic National Committee spokesperson Abhi Rahman said that if Biden had stayed in the race, "I'm sure that there would have been blitzes like this, as well."

But now "there's definitely a lot of desire to make sure that the vice president is defining herself and her VP before Republicans get a chance to," Rahman said. "So the timing of this definitely goes with that."

When Biden was the presumptive nominee, the Trump campaign aimed many of its attacks at his cognitive ability, leaning into voters' concerns about his age. But with Harris' being a generation younger than Trump, Republicans have had to pivot their approach.

"I think she's making a point of her relative youth and vitality," said Bill Galston, a Brookings Institution fellow and official in President Bill Clinton's administration. "It's a point that she doesn't have to talk about because she's just showing it."

Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."

"I think the fact that she's willing and able to do this many events in a small amount of time is something that can make a real difference, especially when we're less than a hundred days out" from the election, Cavalier said.

Traveling for campaign events can create more opportunities for local media coverage, accelerate fundraising and identify potential future volunteers, said Eric Jaye, a Democratic consultant at Storefront Political Media, a campaign consulting firm. But most important, candidates are activating thousands of "micro-influencers" at rallies, he said.

"They're all holding up their phones, and they're all publishers," he said, adding that when rallygoers post pictures of themselves with a candidate, "that will go out to their networks, which is an endorsement for their networks."

"If you can get 10,000 people to share that they trust Kamala Harris, that has an impact as a form of media and communication in and of itself," Jaye said. "So essentially these are conventions of micro-influencers."

Already, the Harris campaign has touted a groundswell of volunteer support, noting in a memo released Saturday that over the previous 12 days, volunteers had placed 2.3 million phone calls and knocked on 172,000 doors.

The seven-state tour “shows that she has a ton of energy,” Renteria said. “It shows that her campaign is ready to go and is thinking through things and able to execute well. So it’s super exciting.”

America’s battlefields and associated historic sites are living monuments — places of remembrance and reflection —and  visitation is on the rise . These places are windows into our history, the lessons of which help us shed light upon the way forward. Walk in the footsteps of those who forged our country. Honor our heroes. Explore our past. Envision our future.

Battlefields Everyone Should Visit

battle ground tour

Visit: Gettysburg Battlefield, PA

Over the course of three long days in the summer of 1863, 165,000 men met at Gettysburg and fought one of the most dramatic battles in Americans history, engaging in a fierce struggle over what kind of country the United States should be. Today, visitors can walk in the footsteps of the brave soldiers who fought and died at such iconic places as Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, Cemetery Ridge, and Culp’s Hill. While you’re there, make sure to pay your respects at the Soldiers National Cemetery and visit the David Wills House, where Abraham Lincoln stayed the night before he delivered his Gettysburg Address. The Civil War Trust is proud to have saved more than 900 acres of hallowed ground at numerous key sites at and around Gettysburg, including the site of Lee's  Headquarters on Seminary Ridge.

Visit: Vicksburg Battlefield, MS

Ulysses S. Grant is sometimes remembered as a blundering butcher. Those who study his audacious campaign against Vicksburg know better. Over the course of three months in the summer of 1863, Grant carried out one of the most brilliantly executed campaigns in the annals of military history, ultimately capturing the “Gibraltar of the South” and severing the Confederacy in two. Today, visitors to the Vicksburg National Military Park can walk the trenches and scenes of battle where Lincoln’s great general changed the course of the Civil War. Be sure to also visit the USS Cairo ironclad warship, recovered from a river bottom and on display.

Visit: Fredericksburg Battlefield, VA

When President Abraham Lincoln learned of the Union defeat at Fredericksburg in December 1862, he responded, “If there is a place worse than hell, I’m in it.” Lincoln’s horror was understandable. At Fredericksburg Confederate General Robert E. Lee won one of his most decisive victories, inflicting massive casualties on the Union Army despite being heavily outnumbered. Almost a century and a half later, the Civil War Trust won a victory at Fredericksburg almost as decisive, successfully preserving more than 200 acres of hallowed ground at the Slaughter Pen Farm. Thanks to the efforts of the Trust, visitors can follow the Union’s attack on Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia from beginning to end.

Visit: Yorktown Battlefield, VA

On October 19, 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia, General George Washington shocked the world when he secured the surrender of British General Charles Lord Cornwallis . While the war that started at Lexington and Concord in 1775 would officially continue until the signing of the war-ending Treaty of Paris in 1783, the decisive victory of the Americans and their French allies at Yorktown ensured the success of the United States’ movement for independence. Today, visitors to Colonial National Park can see with their own eyes the site of Washington’s most decisive victory.

battle ground tour

Visit: Lexington & Concord Battlefield, MA

Early on the morning of April 19, 1775 a shot rang out in Lexington, Massachusetts. While historians do not know who fired that shot, its significance cannot be over overstated. Not only did the shot fired at Lexington inaugurate a day of combat that would ultimately claim 122 lives, but it also ignited a war that forever changed the world, bringing into existence a nation dedicated to the proposition that all human beings are equal. Today, visitors to Minute Man National Historic Park can discover the story of the Battles of Lexington and Concord and walk in the footsteps of men who changed the world.

Harris readies for running mate announcement, battleground state tour

Vice President Harris is closing in on the announcement of a running mate and a tour of battleground states with her yet-to-be-named pick that is scheduled to start Tuesday in Philadelphia. Harris interviewed at least three potential running mates Sunday: Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. It remained unclear whether Harris had interviewed three other potential finalists: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker. The Democratic ticket plans to campaign in coming days in each of the seven most competitive states — Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.

Kamala Harris to campaign with VP pick in battleground states next week

By Fin Gómez , Nidia Cavazos , Caitlin Yilek

Updated on: July 30, 2024 / 6:45 PM EDT / CBS News

Vice President Kamala Harris , the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, and her running mate will campaign together in battleground states next week, sources familiar with the plans told CBS News.

Harris has yet to announce her vice presidential pick. When asked Tuesday whether she had made a decision yet, she said "not yet."

A top tier of contenders has emerged , CBS News has learned, with a pick expected to be made by Monday. The top tier includes Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

About 10 hopefuls remain overall, and Harris will begin conducting formal interviews with the top contenders this week.

Before President Biden ended his reelection campaign and handed the reins to Harris, CBS News rated six of the seven battleground states as toss-ups and one as leaning Republican. Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are considered more competitive, while North Carolina is rated as leaning Republican.

Harris has made about three dozen visits to battleground states so far this year.  Reuters  was first to report Harris' plans to travel with her running mate.

Amna Nawaz:

With crisscrossing rallies, campaign cash hauls, and social media jabs, the 2024 presidential hopefuls made their cases to the American public today. For Vice President Harris, it was a chance to familiarize voters with her newly minted running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Meantime, former President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance sharpened their attacks against their opponents.

In battleground Wisconsin, Vice President Harris and Minnesota Governor Walz hit the ground running on their first full day together on the Democratic ticket.

Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States (D) and U.S. Presidential Candidate: Can we hear it for Tim Walz?

One goal, help Americans get to know Walz.

Kamala Harris:

To the people of Southern Minnesota for 12 years, he was a congressman.

To his former high school students, he was Mr. Walz.

And to his former high school football players, he was Coach.

The other, keep up the attack on their Republican opponents.

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), Vice Presidential Candidate: Again and again and again, this guy weakens our country to strengthen his own hands. He mocks our laws. He sows chaos and division amongst the people. And that's to say nothing of the job he did as president.

That followed Walz's debut as Harris' running mate last night in Philadelphia…

So, Pennsylvania, I'm here today because I found such a leader.

… when in a raucous crowd of more than 14,000, according to the Harris campaign, showed the newfound excitement behind this ticket.

The Harris H.Q. TRUTH Social account posted this photo of the event juxtaposed with an image of a Trump rally held in the same arena in June. Enthusiasm also came in the form of cash. The campaign said today it raised a whopping $36 million in the first 24 hours after Walz joined the ticket.

The events in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are part of their whirlwind tour of several key battleground states over the next few days. Former President Trump, meanwhile, was on the offensive in a phone interview on FOX, portraying Harris and Walz as left-wing extremists.

Donald Trump, Former President of the United States (R) and Current U.S. Presidential Candidate: Nobody knew how radical left she was, but he's a smarter version of her, if you want to know the truth. He's probably about the same as Bernie Sanders. He's probably more so than Bernie Sanders. She is more so than Bernie Sanders. This is a ticket that would want this country to go communist immediately, if not sooner.

Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance, began his own battleground blitz. At a police station in Michigan, he made the case for why a Harris/Walz administration would be bad for crime.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Vice Presidential Candidate: We saw that, of course, in 2020 with the summer riots with our new vice presidential nominee on the Democratic side. As he was promoting rioters and looters burning down the city of Minneapolis, Kamala Harris was helping to bail the rioters and looters out of jail.

He was referring to protests following the police killing of George Floyd, some of which turned violent. As Minnesota's governor, Walz called in the National Guard after several days. Some say he was slow to respond.

By the afternoon, Vance was on to another campaign stop in Wisconsin, landing as team Harris was about to depart and walking right up to the vice president's plane, Air Force Two.

Sen. J.D. Vance:

I just wanted to check out my future plane.

On the stump, Vance responded to the attack line coined by Walz that he and former President Trump are weird.

I think that the weird argument honestly came from a bunch of 24-year-old social media interns who were bullied in school, and they decided they're going to project that onto the entire Trump campaign.

As for team Harris, a stop in Michigan tonight, then on to Arizona and Nevada later this week.

As Democrats barnstorm battleground states, so does JD Vance

As the new Democratic presidential ticket embarks on a tour of competitive battleground states, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance is also on the trail to make sure the conversations aren’t one-sided.

Before Vice President Harris took the stage in Philadelphia Tuesday night for the first time with her running mate , Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vance held a lengthy press conference in the city, blasting his opponents and making the case for a second Donald Trump presidency.

“Kamala Harris has been such a disaster as vice president of this country, that everywhere she goes, chaos and uncertainty follow,” he said. “We’ve got a war in Europe, we’ve got a war in the Middle East that threatens to spiral out of control, we've got chaos in the world financial markets. Everything that Kamala Harris touches has been a disaster, and we have got to kick her out of the United States government, not give her a promotion.”

Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris applauds as her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, speaks at Temple University's Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Takeaways from Tim Walz's introduction to the national stage

The prebuttal tour comes after a tumultuous six weeks of presidential politics that has seen each major party’s fortunes reverse, and after Vance’s rocky start on the campaign trail as Trump’s vice presidential pick.

Following President Biden's abysmal debate performance, and coming into the Republican National Convention last month, Trump enjoyed a sizable polling lead against Biden. Trump's selection of the Ohio U.S. senator to join the ticket signaled confidence in the race.

But in the ensuing weeks, Biden ended his reelection campaign and Democrats coalesced around Harris with a surge in fundraising and enthusiasm that has led to a much more competitive contest.

A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll , out Tuesdsay, showed Harris leading Trump nationally, 51%-48%.

Vance tries to find his campaign footing

In early appearances after accepting the nomination, Vance struggled with some attack lines against Harris, went viral for joking that Democrats would call drinking Diet Mountain Dew racist, and came under fire for prior comments in which he derided Democratic women without children as “childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.” Democrats have pounded away at Vance for his views and comments.

Usha Vance, wife of vice presidential nominee JD Vance, speaks during the Republican National Convention on July 17 in Milwaukee.

Usha Vance tries to defend her husband's 'childless cat ladies' comment

Now, Vance appears to have sharpened his stump speech and is taking a leading role in attacking Harris and Walz, attempting to paint them as far-left liberals out of touch with everyday Americans.

“It is normal people who suffer when Kamala Harris refuses to do her job, and it is normal people who stand to benefit the most when we reelect Donald J. Trump president of the United States,” he said in Philadelphia.

His events have focused in particular on tying Harris to the Biden administration's record on immigration and border security, and have featured comments from local residents who blame Democratic policies for worsening crime, opioid addiction and other issues.

“Democrats claim to have cleaned up the streets, but it has not worked,” Geraldine Briggs of Philadelphia said. “The border crisis has led to an influx of drugs coming across the border and impacting families like mine throughout the city.”

In Michigan Wednesday, Vance expanded his criticism to Walz, who was a more moderate Democrat during his time in Congress but as governor of Minnesota has embraced more progressive policies.

“This is a radical human being who comes from the far-left wing of the Democrat Party,” Vance said in Shelby Township, Mich. “And what Kamala Harris is telling all of us by selecting Tim Walz is that she bends the knee to the far left of the Democrat Party.”

Harris and Walz are set to rally in Michigan later Wednesday.

Both Vance and Walz are still relatively unknown to the broader electorate, so these early days of campaigning seek to set the tone for the next three months.

Vance’s Republican counterprogramming has still been largely overshadowed by Harris campaign events and recent controversy around the Trump campaign.

He was asked Wednesday about inflammatory comments Trump made regarding Harris’ biracial background last week, including claims that Harris “turned Black” for political gain.

“I was not bothered at all by what President Trump said,” said Vance, whose wife is Indian American. “And I didn't take it as an attack on Kamala Harris' biracial background at all. What I took it as was an attack on Kamala Harris being a chameleon. She pretends to be one thing when she's in front of one audience. She pretends to be something else when she's in front of another audience.”

Both Harris and Vance canceled planned trips to North Carolina Thursday ahead of Tropical Storm Debby.

Trump’s only scheduled campaign event this week is a rally in Bozeman, Mont., for U.S. Senate nominee Tim Sheehy in a competitive race that could help decide control of that chamber.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris is set to launch a battleground tour next week with her yet-to-be-named running mate, with stops in seven swing states stretching from Pennsylvania to Nevada, her campaign said Tuesday.

The planned tour is the latest sign of the whirlwind pace at which Harris has gone from President Joe Biden’s supportive running mate to likely Democratic nominee ready to identify her No. 2 and take on Republican Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. JD Vance.

Harris said Tuesday she hadn’t made a decision yet on whom she will select.

Those who are under consideration have been demonstrating a time-honored tradition: summertime auditions in which vice presidential contenders walk the line between open self-promotion and loyal advocacy for the potential boss.

To that end, Democrat Josh Shapiro told enthusiastic voters in suburban Philadelphia this week that Harris belongs in the White House — and then reminded them of all he’s done as governor of battleground Pennsylvania. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, likewise, told voters in Georgia that Harris has the makings of “a great president” — and then highlighted the elections he’s won as a Democrat in Republican territory.

Harris’ campaign has been vetting about a dozen potential running mates, according to people familiar with the search process. Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly are seen as among the front-runners, according to the people.

Image

The campaign said Harris and her running mate will make stops next week in Philadelphia; western Wisconsin; Detroit; Raleigh, North Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Phoenix and Las Vegas.

In the meantime, Harris advisers, led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, have been combing through reams of paperwork submitted by potential running mates, while the candidate herself is holding personal conversations with the finalists, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details that haven’t been made public.

Harris, according to another person familiar with the matter, is seeking someone with executive experience who can also serve as a governing partner. Notions of a so-called short list have not stopped those on the Democrats’ broader national bench from finding the spotlight.

“I’m not going to talk about the interactions I’ve had with the campaign,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker declared recently on MSNBC. He added, though, “Let’s just say I’m aware that the vetting process is quite an in depth one.” Then he listed his accomplishments, offering that he was the only Midwestern governor to raise his state minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Harris would be the first woman, first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to serve as president. Many Democrats have argued she should balance her ticket both demographically and politically.

Dems’ VP list has notable differences

Shapiro, 51, is among the most popular U.S. governors, winning his 2022 election in a rout over a Trump-endorsed Republican. He’s an outspoken supporter of abortion rights who has won three statewide elections in Pennsylvania. His speaking style draws comparisons to former President Barack Obama. But he has taken flak from the left for his support for Israel’s war on Hamas, a private school voucher program and natural gas infrastructure.

His allies argue that he would help Harris win Pennsylvania, complicating if not blocking Trump’s path to an Electoral College majority.

Like all contenders, Shapiro sidesteps questions about the vetting process and stresses Harris should not be pressured. But he’s mentioned more than once that he’s known her for nearly two decades.

Beshear stands out in a heavily Republican state. During his weekend stop in Georgia, he talked of winning votes in “tough counties” but emphasized liberal bona fides: “I am a proud pro-union governor. I am a proud pro-choice governor. I am a proud public education governor. I am a proud pro-diversity governor.”

Closest in age to JD Vance among the Democrats’ possibilities, Beshear openly mocks Trump’s understudy for presenting himself as a son of Appalachia. “I mean, there’s a county that JD Vance says he’s from in Kentucky – and I won it by 22 points last November,” he said.

Beshear and Shapiro were both state attorneys general, like Harris, before becoming governors. But their tenures did not overlap considerably with Harris’ service in California. She worked more closely with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper during his days as an attorney general, but Cooper on Monday said he had opted not to be considered for vice president.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, 60, is a favorite of some progressives. He brings an atypical national political resume: He was a non-commissioned Army officer, public school teacher and state high school championship football coach before entering politics. Before being elected governor, he was one of the last white Democrats in Congress to represent a mostly rural, small-town House district — a notable juxtaposition to Harris, the Bay Area Californian.

“She will make the best choice she’s going to,” Walz said Sunday on CNN, a day after Trump held a mass rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota. “One way or another, she is going to win in November, and that’s going to benefit everyone,” Walz said, including “a lot of those folks who were out in St. Cloud with the (former) president.”

Kelly, 60, is the only top contender in Congress. He boasts an impressive military resume and experience as an astronaut. He has strong Latino support locally and solid relationships with Arizona officials along the U.S.-Mexico border. That balance could give him credibility on immigration policy as Republicans frame high numbers of migrant border crossings as a national crisis.

But Kelly has had to shore up his credentials with labor, a key Democratic faction. He took heat from union leaders because he was one of just a handful of Democrats who did not sponsor the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which would make it easier to organize workers. He said at the time he supported the goals but had concerns. Following pressure this month, he now says he would vote for the bill if it came up for a vote.

Everyone has an opinion

While Harris considers her choices, everyone seems to have an opinion.

Steven Benjamin, the White House director of public engagement, laughed as he told reporters on Air Force One on Monday that his office has received thousands of recommendations from around the country.

Donna Brazile, who managed Democrat Al Gore’s presidential campaign in 2000 and was instrumental in urging Biden to pick Harris in 2020, said the selection process involves “a lot of noise” that underplays the complexity of the decision.

“The most important stage is what the lawyers will do to you,” she said, with a laugh and emphasizing the seriousness. “It’s worse than a dental hygiene check. ... Before you get to suitability and other factors, before it gets to political people like me, they’ve done a forensic examination of your life.”

Barrow reported from Cumming, Georgia. Associated Press reporters Will Weissert in Washington, Gary Robertson in Raleigh, North Carolina; Marc Levy in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Bruce Schreiner in Frankfort, Kentucky; Jonathan J. Cooper in Phoenix; and Colleen Long aboard Air Force One contributed.
