Thanks for the pics. This bike looks great! I’m curious how you might compare its ride to the Trek 7.X FX line, which seems fairly similar except for the frame/fork material (steel vs. aluminum for the FX).

Howdy Darryl,

You are correct on frame material differences, steel vs. aluminum. Aluminum tends to be a lighter, yet stiffer material for bicycle frames. Using steel, while the weight is slightly heavier, the ride is more supple do to the steel being able to dissipate some of the vibrations that travel up from the riding surface.

Aside from frame materials, this bike come stock with some great extras for urban use and commuting like the full fenders, front rack and disc brakes. Once you have commuted through the rain with full fenders, you will never go back. It is glorious.

Also there is a slightly different geometry to the Steel District. You will be a bit more upright, in command and in control, able to carry loads on your stable new front rack. While the FX, being a slightly more fitness orientated line, you will be a bit more aggressive in the saddle, with bit more lean forward from of the saddle.

Hopefully I answered your question, if not, or you have more, just post away.

Have a great day,

Thanks Anthony, I do appreciate it. I live in the Washington DC region but I haven’t found a local Trek dealer stocking this new bike so thank you for answering these questions.

I did commute on a Trek 7.3 FX bike for a year (6 miles each way through busy suburban streets), but switched to a steel bike (Jamis Coda Comp) for the reasons you mentioned, but I’m looking for a disc brake bike for better stopping in wet weather since I do commute year round in all conditions. The Steel District looks just about perfect and at a good price point for a steel bike. While I did like the FX, I was looking for something with a bit more zip and it sounds like the Steel District might satisfy that. I use a rear rack so I might not use the front basket and I’m also not sure about the curved handlebars — I might want to go with a less-curvy handlebar because I like bar-end extensions. Anyway, thank you again for the information!

Sounds like it may be just the bike for you. I am sure your local Trek dealer will allow for a bar swap at the time of purchase for a minimal charge, I also go with less of a sweep on my bars.

It sounds like you do a bit of riding, so ask the dealer about Trek Care Plus on your new bike. Trek Care Plus will cover wear and tear on your bike, including parts and labor, for three years. Cassettes, chains, chain rings, all covered. All you have to do is provide proper maintenance. Even as an bike shop employee I get it on my bike. I just got a 520 and added it. You can check it out here. http://blog.villagecycle.com/2013/11/2014-trek-520-first-ride/

Have a great day!

European-type city bikes are increasingly in popularity in the United States, so much so that Trek decided to bring their top-of-the-line city bikes from Europe to market stateside. The District 4 Equipped Stagger offers geometry similar to the flagship Trek Townie with larger wheels, a shorter wheelbase and longer seat tube to adapt more easily to mixed urban terrain. The success of e-bikes in the category has cleared space for more aggressive cruisers like the District 4 that emphasize the simplicity of on-bike experience instead of decreased physical exertion.

For many riders in major American cities, Trek is a controversial name. The brand has seen public outcry and boycotts in the wake of the 2020 racial justice protests for supplying police departments across the country with bikes designed for crowd suppression. However, Trek is not alone in their contentious affiliation, as others have also received condemnation for their ties to law enforcement and military contracts.

Though the online discourse is decidedly not in their favor, Trek maintains an outsized presence in cycling due to the breadth and quality of their products. Their bicycles are fitted with high-end components and backed by top-notch repairs and customer service, while their global brick-and-mortar presence makes the brand well-suited for first-time riders and avid cyclists alike.

The District range offers two bikes, a step-over model with flat bars and a step-through (Stagger) bike with swept-back cruiser bars. Each are available in Europe with the addition of an electric motor under the District+ name, though these e-bike variants have yet to make it to American shores. Both District models provide an upright riding position, while the Stagger offers more comfort at the expense of climbing ability. They are only available fully equipped (meaning with rack, fenders, and lights), as many of the accessories are integrated with the frame.

trek district 4

The District 4 Equipped Stagger is curated at the component level to make daily rides easier and more comfortable. It features a silent internal gear rear hub, a clean-running belt drive system, powerful disc brakes, and a dynamo front hub which powers the front and rear lights. No creature comfort is spared, and though the price point makes that apparent, the ability to commute safely right out of the box is tremendous.

The District 4 has ergonomic Bontrager Satellite Elite grips, which project down to support the palm, and offer dual-density pressure distribution to make holding the bars as gentle on your hands as possible. The partially-split Bontrager Commuter Comp saddle pairs well, allowing an extended upright position without sacrificing soft tissue protection. Both components are waterproof to handle any conditions.

trek district 4

The bike also comes equipped with front and rear SKS plastic fenders to keep your pants clean in the event of an unexpected drizzle. Combined with the internal hub and belt drive, it’s easy to dismount the District 4 Equipped Stagger in approximately the same state of composure as when you got on.

Though the Stagger model sacrifices the seat tube bottle mount found on the non-step through District, the down tube mount has plenty of room for a large water bottle. The loss of storage capacity is also barely missed since the large aluminum MIK-compatible rack has the size and durability to attach multiple panniers with room to spare.

trek district 4

As a frequent bike commuter from Brooklyn into Lower Manhattan, I was eager to run the District 4 through its paces to see if I could really get to work as clean and sweat-free as the lifestyle commuter promised. Mounting the bike is as easy as sitting down on a chair and the upright cruiser bar position makes back strain negligible.

I set off and was immediately awed by the silence of the belt drive system. My jangling keys were the loudest thing on the bike. Allure shortly became alarm when I realized that my silence made no impression on the pedestrians or vehicles around me. Then I noticed that the bike lacked a bell. On most bikes, the bell is a user-added preference but on the District 4 I couldn’t help but feel its absence among the included buffet of commute accessories. Plus, a bell is required in many places.

trek district 4

My ride into the city begins with a non-trivial mile-long incline, which proved the greatest challenge to the District 4. On a bike with a more traditional flat bar, one can adjust their posture to tackle an incline with only a little added exertion. The step-through Stagger model with its cruiser bar makes climbing slow at best. At 34lbs, the bike isn’t outlandishly heavy, but it bears close to 10 pounds more weight than my daily ride. I made a mental note to re-draw my route and avoid roads over a 5° incline.

On flatter roads and downhills, the District 4 really shines. The internal hub shifts are responsive and offer decent range, though I found myself topping out the highest of the bike’s 8-speeds on a few descents. Though the bike is comfortable reaching speeds up to 20mph, I experienced front wheel wobble as I neared 25mph and consequently had to readjust the fenders. Slowing down from high speed is a piece of cake for the District 4, with quick-action hydraulic disc brakes ideal for defensive urban riding.

trek district 4

The District is a head-turner, too. Fellow cyclists loved seeing the disc brakes, belt drive, and front hub dynamo-integrated lighting system. Loaded up with my groceries and bar-mounted burrito pouch, I found myself knocking out errands including an overzealous trip to the hardware store with ease.

Though I only had to perform superficial maintenance and the bike promises little need, the internal hub and belt enclosure make DIY maintenance unappealing. If something goes wrong on the District 4, you’ll probably be taking it to the shop. Luckily, there’s at least one brick-and-mortar Trek location in most major cities, including one right en route to my office.

trek district 4

The District 4 Equipped Stagger doesn’t necessarily make cycling more appealing to newcomers, but it does provide plenty of amenities for those who already enjoy the ride. The missing accessories are easily added and the route indelicacies avoided. Fender and lighting integration reduce the likelihood of theft and encourage biking for all manner of local travel.

The District 4 is the distilled essence of urban cycling without the grime, noise, or inconveniences. If you’re a regular cyclist who wants a polished, high-end, out of the box solution for easy commuting and errands, this is a bike for you.

In CA-45 race, Rep. Michelle Steel and Derek Tran will face off in November

R epublican Rep. Michelle Steel and Democrat Derek Tran appear poised to advance to the general election for California’s 45th congressional district race — a contest closely watched by both parties this year.

While Steel has consistently led the pack since the March 5 primary, the race was extremely close for the second-place spot . As of Monday morning in Orange and Los Angeles counties — both served by CA-45 — 366 votes separated Tran and Democrat Kim Nguyen-Penaloza , a Garden Grove councilmember who conceded over the weekend.

“It’s time to call it. Unfortunately, I did not win my bid for CA-45,” Nguyen-Penaloza said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “When I made the decision to run in January 2023, I really thought I could do it. … I felt in my heart I could be the representative we deserve. Someone who walks in our shoes, understands our struggles and who will fight so we can live out our American dream.”

See the latest election results.

Tran, in his own statement on X, thanked Nguyen-Penaloza and said he is honored to be the Democratic nominee for CA-45. A first-time candidate, Tran has said he plans to address the gun violence epidemic, advocate for women’s rights and fight the effects of climate change.

“In the Army, I swore an oath to serve this country, and in November we will defeat corrupt Michelle Steel and provide true representation to the people of CA-45,” he said.

On Monday, Steel thanked her supporters in an emailed statement.

“Southern California families deserve and need someone in Washington who won’t raise their taxes and who will always fight to lower them,” said Steel. “I support lower taxes, more freedom, less spending, an America that challenges the Chinese Communist Party and a secure border.”

“My English may be broken, but my voice is loud and positions clear,” she said.

The race for CA-45 attracted several candidates, including Democrats Aditya Pai , an affordable housing attorney, and Cheyenne Hunt , a policy advocate. Both have since conceded.

CA-45 is one of several Republican-held House districts that went for President Joe Biden in 2020 and where registered Democrats in the district outnumber registered Republicans. As of Feb. 20, according to data from the secretary of state’s office, the district includes 36.9% registered Democrats, 33.3% Republicans and 23.8% no party preference.

In November, more than 752,000 people in the district, home to the largest Vietnamese enclave outside of Vietnam, will get to choose who represents them in Congress for the next two years: a Republican of Korean descent or a Democrat with Vietnamese roots.

Steel, first elected in 2020 , became one of the first Korean American women to serve in Congress along with fellow Republican Rep. Young Kim and Democratic Rep. Marilyn Strickland of Washington.

Tran is the son of Vietnamese refugees who fled communist Vietnam by boat in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, arriving in Southern California.

Ballot counting is still ongoing, and county elections officials have until April 2 to report final results to the secretary of state, who will certify results on April 12.

The OC Registrar of Voters certified its primary results on Friday, March 22. The LA Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk said all outstanding ballots left to be processed in Los Angeles County are pending signature cures from voters who did not sign their return envelopes or had signatures that did not match their registration record. LA results are scheduled to be certified on Friday, March 29.

Riding armoured vehicles and playing with dogs, Ukrainian troops are still firmly on the Russian border.

Reuters has captured photos of them in Sumy - the area where they launched their surprise invasion of Russia's Kursk region last week.

Since then, they've taken land and pushed on with their offensive, capturing the town of Sudzha yesterday and advancing up to 3km (1.8 miles) today, according to their commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Five villages in Russia's Belgorod will be evacuated due to ongoing Ukrainian attacks, the region's governor has said.

Writing on Telegram, Vyacheslav Gladkov said entry to the areas would not be allowed.

"From August 19, we are closing entry to five settlements in the region, resettling residents and helping to remove property," he said.

Yesterday, Russia's Emergencies Ministry declared a "federal level" state of emergency in the Belgorod due to ongoing Ukrainian attacks.

A regional-level state of emergency had been declared earlier in the week, and the change in status suggested a worsening situation in the region.

Footage has emerged of the moment a bridge in Kursk was destroyed.

Ukrainian air force commander Mykola Oleschuk shared the clip on Telegram, saying forces had taken part in "combat operations" in the Russian region.

He said Ukrainian pilots had hit "enemy strongholds", equipment, logistic centres and supply routes with the "high precision strikes".

"Thank you to the pilots and everyone who ensures the combat work of aviation," he added.

It comes after Russian state media reported a key bridge over the River Seym in the area had been destroyed by Ukraine.

The destruction had made civilian evacuations harder, TASS news agency reported, citing Russian security officials.

A man has admitted to being a member of Russia's Wagner Group but claimed he was only "pretending" to be involved.

Piotr Kucharski pleaded guilty to membership of a proscribed organisation between 15 September and 28 October 2023 at the Old Bailey today.

As he entered his plea, the 49-year-old said: "Guilty that I was pretending that I was a member of the organisation."

Dan Pawson-Pounds, prosecuting, said: "There is no evidence that Mr Kucharski actually travelled to the location he claimed to have gone to, or engaged in the activities relating to the Wagner Group, so that is why the charge has been framed in the way it has."

Simon Gledhill, defending, said: "In short, he told people, and gave the impression that, he was a member of the group rather than being an actual member."

Kucharski listed his address as Watford, Hertfordshire, but he said after the hearing that he was from Poland.

He was convicted and served a 15-year sentence for armed robbery in Poland, the court was told.

He remains on conditional bail.

Who are the Wagner Group?

The group was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in September 2023, making it a criminal offence to belong to or support the group in the UK.

The group became a focus of the war in Ukraine in 2022, with its recruits helping Russia in the battle of Bakhmut - one of the bloodiest of the conflict.

Its former leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, later organised a march on Moscow in an attempt to oust senior Russian military leaders over the treatment of his mercenaries and the handling of war.

But, his attempted mutiny failed. He was later exiled by Vladimir Putin and died in a plane crash a short time later.

Three police officers have been injured in a drone attack in the Mykolaiv region, Ukraine's national police has said.

In a post on Telegram, the force said the officers were in the southern Ukrainian area to document the aftermath of previous Russian attacks when a drone hit their car.

It said they all received "explosive injuries" and were undergoing treatment.

It also shared images purporting to show the damaged vehicle.

Russia has summoned Italy's ambassador in Moscow after journalists entered the Kursk region.

The Russian foreign ministry said the official had been summoned over an "illegal border crossing" by a team of correspondents from Italian state broadcaster RAI.

It said the team had reported from Ukrainian-held parts of Kursk earlier this week.

"A strong protest was expressed to the ambassador in connection with the actions of the film crew of the Italian state television and radio company "RAI", which illegally entered the territory of the Russian Federation to cover the criminal terrorist attack of Ukrainian militants in the Kursk region," it said on Telegram.

"In gross violation of Russian legislation and elementary rules of journalistic ethics, the Italian correspondents used their stay in our country to whitewash the propaganda support for the crimes of the Kyiv regime."

It said the actions of the journalists fell under Russia's criminal code and authorities were taking steps to "establish the circumstances of the crime".

On Tuesday 6 August, Ukrainian forces launched their invasion of Russia's Kursk region.

The offensive came as a shock, with Russian officials scrambling to respond as troops and armour poured across the border.

The Ukrainian operation has been taking place under tight secrecy, with participating forces reportedly only told about it a day before it began.

Since then, fighting has continued and Ukraine has been able to advance further into the region.

Yesterday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his troops had captured the largest Russian town to date - an area called Sudzha.

Now, Ukraine's military has released footage purporting to show day one of the Kursk offensive.

In the clip, a Ukrainian tank fires at the Sudzha border crossing terminal.

At least three Russian soldiers are seen signalling their surrender before a larger group exit the rubble of the terminal.

An even larger group of Russian prisoners are seen walking towards Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine is "strengthening" its positions in Russia's Kursk region, but the frontline is still its "top priority", Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

In a post on X, the Ukrainian president said the information came from a report by the armed forces commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Briefing Mr Zelenskyy via video link, Mr Syrskyi said Kyiv's forces were advancing 1km to 3km in the Kursk region.

He also reported fighting in the area of Malaya Loknya - some 11.5km from the Ukrainian border.

Posting about the report, Mr Zelenskyy said: "The Kursk region operation - we are strengthening our positions and replenishing 'exchange fund' for Ukraine. I am grateful to each of our warriors."

"The frontline remains our top priority, particularly the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions," he added.

Earlier today, Ukraine ordered the evacuation of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region.

The order comes as Russian forces continue to push along the frontline in a bid to capture more territory in Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donetsk.

Ukraine has destroyed a bridge over a river in Russia's Kursk region, Russian state news agency TASS has reported.

The bridge, which crosses the River Seym, links areas of Kursk that are still controlled by Russia and areas where Kyiv has made advances.

Its destruction has made civilian evacuations harder, TASS reported, citing Russian security officials.

A mass evacuation is currently under way in the Glushkov district in the region, which is home to around 20,000 people.

Earlier today, reports started to emerge that the bridge had been partially damaged in an attack.

The Kremlin-aligned Mash Telegram channel then reported the bridge was struck by a rocket and had collapsed.

Russian and Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the attack.

Last week, Ukraine launched a surprise invasion of Kursk, with Volodymyr Zelenksyy saying yesterday that his troops had captured the town of Sudzha in the region.
