New Delhi [India], September 9 (ANI): Former Indian diplomat KP Fabian on Monday said that the two warring sides, Russia and Ukraine, should demonstrate sincerity and transparency in their efforts to achieve a ceasefire, as a mediator can only help towards a peaceful resolution, ahead of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval's upcoming visit to Moscow.

Speaking to ANI, Fabian underscored the opportunity for India to contribute to the peace process, particularly during the BRICS NSA meeting scheduled to take place ahead of the BRICS Summit in Kazan from October 22-24.

"No war will end until the belligerents want to end it. You can take a horse to the stream, but can you make it drink? No. So unless the two belligerents want a ceasefire, a mediator can only help. A mediator cannot produce a ceasefire, you now? So let us see," said Fabian.

Ajit Doval's visit, according to Fabian, holds importance beyond just attending the meeting. He expects that Doval will discuss the Ukraine crisis with Russian NSA Nikolai Patrushev, his Russian counterpart, and other key officials.

"It is highly probable that Ajit Doval will discuss with his Russian counterpart, and also with other counterparts, how to end this war in Ukraine. There are two wars: one between Russia and Ukraine, and the other between Russia and NATO, led by the United States," Fabian said, emphasising the complexity of the conflict.

Fabian noted the extensive damage in Ukraine and stressed that ending the conflict is crucial. "We don't know how many thousands of human beings, whether military or civilian, have been killed. But we do know that a good part of Ukraine has been destroyed," he stated, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message of peace remains relevant.

"This has to end. As Prime Minister Modi has been saying, this is not the era for war."After the West's unsuccessful talks to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, India steps up for the job. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NSA Ajit Doval is headed to Moscow for crucial talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

As the Russia-Ukraine war drags on, several world leaders have pinned hope on India to broker peace. During his visit to Russia, Ajit Doval is likely to hold discussions regarding peace process in the region.

NSA Doval's visit follows PM Modi's trips to Russia and Ukraine where he held talks with both leaders and reiterated India's stance. PM Modi emphasized the need for peaceful resolutions of conflict and said, 'India is not neutral and we have chosen the side of peace'.

Notably, Russian President Putin on September 5 said that China, India and Brazil could mediate potential peace talks against Ukraine. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also mentioned India as a probable mediator after meeting Zelenskyy. India has walked a diplomatic tightrope throughout the conflict, reiterating its stance and inching towards a position to broker peace.

Fabian also remarked on the changing dynamics of Western support for Ukraine, citing diminishing financial and military aid. "There are also limits to what the West can do in terms of both money and weapons," he said, noting that countries like Germany and Hungary have scaled back their support.

With declining aid, Ukraine could be more inclined towards seeking a ceasefire, but as Fabian pointed out, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also declared his intent to pursue victory.

In the broader context of BRICS diplomacy, Fabian highlighted Putin's strategic efforts to secure a favourable declaration from the upcoming BRICS Summit. "President Putin is playing his cards exceedingly well... He wants a declaration after the summit to include words on this conflict that are favourable to Russia," Fabian said.

WNBA star Brittney Griner released from Russian custody in a high-profile prisoner swap between the U.S. and Moscow

WASHINGTON —  WNBA star Brittney Griner  is free Thursday after the Biden administration negotiated her release from a Russian penal colony in exchange for an arms dealer.

President Joe Biden signed off on the trade, which took place in the United Arab Emirates, even though it meant leaving behind Paul Whelan, an American corporate security executive who remains jailed in Russia.

The move marks one of the most high-profile prisoner swaps between Moscow and Washington since the Cold War, with the Kremlin seeing the return of Viktor Bout, who Russian President Vladimir Putin has been wanting to get back — and who had served 11 years of a 25-year sentence in the United States.

Griner’s return to the United States will cap a monthslong saga that began in February when she was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after Russian authorities said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. She was later jailed on drug charges.

The 32-year-old Phoenix Mercury player was the subject of prolonged and often public negotiations between the two countries after a trial that  underscored frayed relations  amid  Russia’s war in Ukraine . Biden’s administration had sought the release of both Griner and Whelan.

“I’m telling you, I am determined to get her home and get her home safely — along with others, I might add,” Biden said of the situation on Nov. 9.

Whelan is serving a 16-year prison sentence after being accused of spying, which the U.S. has denied. People familiar with the negotiations for his release say the Russians refused to release Whelan without getting a Russian spy in return. The U.S. insists it does not have any Russian spies in its custody, and thus no one to trade to meet the Kremlin’s demand.

Griner’s release marks a stunning turn of events from last month, when she began serving a nine-year sentence  at a Russian penal colony  more than 200 miles east of Moscow.

During her trial in July, Griner pleaded guilty but said she had no criminal intent. Griner said the canisters, which she had been prescribed to treat chronic pain, were packed inadvertently as she hurriedly prepared for her flight.

As her trial neared its end in early August, it became public that the U.S. put a prisoner swap offer on the table for Moscow to consider. Russia called for “quiet diplomacy” but said after her sentencing that it was  ready to discuss  a deal.

NBC News reported in July that the U.S.  proposed  a prisoner exchange with Russia for the release of Griner and  Whelan , who has been detained since 2018. That deal, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed at the time, would have included the U.S. releasing Bout, known as the “Merchant of Death” because he was considered one of the world’s largest illicit arms dealers.

Bout  was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison  in 2012 after he was convicted of selling arms to Colombian rebels, which prosecutors said were intended to kill Americans. The Kremlin has been demanding his release over the past decade, saying he was unfairly targeted.

The Washington-Moscow swap marks the most prominent diplomatic engagement between the two countries since the U.S. and its allies firmly backed Kyiv and condemned the Kremlin for launching the war against its neighbor in February.

The Biden administration has faced tremendous pressure to help bring home the 6-foot-9 Houston native. Griner’s teammates, family and friends, as well as a number of U.S. celebrities lobbied for her return.

Griner’s release is the second publicly known U.S. prisoner swap with Russia since the war in Ukraine started .  American  Trevor Reed  was released in April after spending nearly three years in a Russian jail. The former Marine was freed in a  prisoner exchange  that saw Biden commute the sentence of Konstantin Yaroshenko, a convicted Russian drug trafficker serving time in Connecticut who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the U.S. in 2010.

With the United States and its Western allies confronting the realities of a new Cold War with Russia in the wake of the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, the high-stakes swap will evoke memories of Soviet-era trades involving spies.

One of the most well known Cold War swaps involved American pilot Francis Gary Powers, whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. He was traded in 1962 for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in an exchange on a fog-shrouded bridge between West Berlin and East Germany.

The largest U.S.-Russian spy swap since the Cold War  came in 2010  when 10 Russian agents, including  Anna Chapman , were exchanged for four other Russians accused of spying for the West — among them  Sergei Skripal , who was later poisoned with a nerve agent in the United Kingdom. The British government  blamed  Moscow for the poisoning.

Is it possible to visit Russia as a tourist right now? (Q&A)

Who can enter Russia as a tourist?

At present, people from 80 countries can enter Russia. There are two main conditions: first, one must be a citizen of that country or have a permanent residence permit; and second - one needs to enter Russia by plane. The primary document that regulates entry during the coronavirus pandemic is Order no. 635-r (March 16, 2020), which is regularly updated. 

Some of the countries on the list include the United States, Britain, Greece, Germany, Tunisia, Israel, Japan, Armenia, Qatar, Portugal, Mexico, Croatia, Belgium, China, France, Denmark, New Zealand, Iran, Peru, Norway and Argentina. Click here for the full list. 

In the meantime, any country with which Russia currently has a travel agreement can serve as the port of departure (however, the transit country must be on the above list).

What type of visa is required?

Those who already have a valid Russian visa - and citizens of the above countries - can enter Russia using that visa. Those who do require a visa can submit their documents at the Russian consulate in their home country.

What is still not possible at this point is obtaining a unified electronic visa (a type of visa that is valid for up to 16 days, takes only four days to process and does not require submitting any documents relating to the purpose of visit). Therefore, in order to receive a regular tourist visa (valid up to six months) it is necessary to have a confirmed accommodation booking or an agreement with a travel agency.

Is a COVID test required?

Yes, PCR tests must be performed no earlier than 48 hours before arriving in Russia. The results must be printed in Russian or English (this is required even if you received a Sputnik-V vaccine shot). If you’re flying with children, they, too, must obtain a test, irrespective of age. And a form for arrivals must be filled in before entering the country.

Who is not affected by the rules? 

These restrictions don’t apply to foreigners with a valid Russian residence permit or those with close relatives. They can enter Russia from any country using any means of transportation, including by land.

They also do not apply to partially recognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as citizens of Belarus (or those with Belarusian permanent residence permits), Kazakhstan and citizens of the Donetsk and Lugansk national republics. Entering by land is also possible when traveling from Mongolia or China. 

Furthermore, if Eurasian Economic Union citizens cross over by land, they don’t have to submit a coronavirus test or fill out the arrivals form. 

Is vaccination required? 

No. The QR codes required for visiting public gatherings before spring (including cafes, bars, hotels, etc.) are no longer required in the majority of regions. The same goes for various other COVID restrictions: regions have the final say, but almost all have been lifted.

What about masks?

Masks are also no longer a requirement. However, some regions still require people to wear masks in some places, including stores, pharmacies, shopping malls, movie theaters and so on. In Moscow, the rule on masks has been completely lifted, while, for example, in Kaliningrad, some places still enforce them. 

Are there any quarantine regulations in place?

No, you will not be required to quarantine on arrival to Russia. However, if you get sick in Russia, you will have to be quarantined for a period of seven days at your own expense. Those who have come in contact with infected people do not require quarantining (provided they did not contract the coronavirus). 

Important! In many countries, there are still restrictions on LEAVING for the purpose of tourism, so having a Russian visa does not guarantee you will get permission to leave your country. This must be clarified before making any trips.

Lying at the heart of Moscow, the Red Square and the Kremlin are just two of the must-see tourist attractions; they are the historical, political and spiritual heart of the city – and indeed Russia itself.

A fascinating city to wander around, stunning cathedrals, churches, and palaces lie side-by-side with bleak grey monuments and remains from the Soviet state. In addition to its plethora of historical and cultural tourist attractions, Moscow is home to world-class museums, theaters and art galleries.

Renowned for its performing arts, fantastic ballets and amazing circus acts, catching a show while in Moscow is a must. The wealth of brilliant restaurants, trendy bars, and lively nightlife means there is something for everyone to enjoy.

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

With over 200 shops, boutiques and upmarket eateries inside, it is a shopaholic’s heaven and concerned partners will be glad to find more affordable options alongside luxury brands such as Dior and Prada.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

Using the metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around Moscow and braving the crowds of commuters is well worth it for the beauty all around you.

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

Catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, shop at the luxurious gum, make your way into lenin's mausoleum, spend an hour (or three) at red square, discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, ride the stunning moscow metro, explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, walk up and down arbat street, stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.

Kootenai Clinic Nephrology – Kidney and Hypertension Services offers medical treatment of kidney disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), including the use of dialysis and transplantation to treat patients with advanced, end stage kidney failure.

The group currently provides care to hundreds of dialysis patients and those who have received a kidney transplant. They also specialize in treating patients with difficult to control high blood pressure occurring in special situations, such as pregnancy.

Kidney failure is most commonly caused by diabetes and high blood pressure. Diseases of the circulation, often due to cigarette smoking, are also major causes of chronic kidney disease. Lupus and other diseases of the immune system, environmental toxins (lead, overuse of some pain medications), and hereditary kidney diseases also produce kidney disease requiring the expertise of nephrologists. Once kidney functions is reduced to an advanced degree (end stage kidney failure) life can be maintained through dialysis, or kidney function can be restored with a successful kidney transplant.

Untreated, chronic kidney disease often involves the slow, progressive destruction of kidney function. However, modern aggressive treatments as prescribed and managed by nephrologists are effective in slowing or completely stopping this decline in kidney function.

If your child is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

During the well-child checks, our pediatricians will evaluate your child’s development, behavior and general well-being. Palouse Pediatrics uses CHADIS, an online system that delivers questionnaires that determine if your child is developing on schedule and without health risks. Our receptionist will send your child’s questionnaire a week before the appointment to fill out. If you forget to fill out the questionnaire please arrive 15 minutes early to fill out your questionnaire upon check-in. Using CHADIS before the visit will help your pediatrician take better care of your child.

We also will address safety in the home, optimal nutrition, toilet training, and environmental concerns.  Our pediatricians will also determine if any vaccinations are recommended during your visit with our office. During these visits our pediatricians encourage parents to ask questions about any concerns that they are noticing in their child.

Depending on the type of lab testing your child will be getting done, it may be necessary for your child to plan ahead to ensure that they are able to fast if necessary. Fasting for the purpose of a lab draw means that your child does not eat or drink anything but water 12 hours prior to their blood draw.

For established Palouse Pediatrics patients who need to speak with the on-call pediatrician, please call our main office number and listen to the message to find out how to be connected. Q:   What if my child is covered under an insurance company that is NOT listed. Can they still be seen?

A: YES! We are willing to bill any insurance for you. However we are not contracted with all of the insurance companies. This means that you may be responsible for more of your bill. We do expect $75 dollars upon check in and the remaining at the end of the visit.

Q:   Do you offer a discount for patients who pay in full at time of service?

A: YES! We offer 20% discount for patients who   do not   have health insurance coverage and pay their bill at time of service. We do expect $75 dollars upon check in and the remaining at the end of the visit. Payments are available if you are unable to pay in full, however the discount will   not   be applied.

Q:   Why was I charged for another office visit when my child was in for a wellness check?

A: There may be times when a child needs a service that is not considered preventative on the same day as well child visit. If a child is not well or a problem is found or needs to be addressed during the checkup, the physician may need to provide an additional office visit service (called a sick visit) to care for the child. This is a different service and is billed to your health plan in addition to the preventative services provided that day. If you have a co-payment for the office visits or coinsurance or deductible amounts that you must pay before your health plan pays for these services, our office will charge you these amounts.

Q:   How do I know for sure if our doctors are covered under my insurance plan?

A: The best way to know for sure is to call your insurance and ask them directly. We are contracted with many insurance companies so there should be no problem. However, there are times we may choose not to renew our contracts with an insurance company.

Q:   I received a statement from you showing that my insurance company has not been billed. Why is that?

A: Most often it is because we did not receive your current insurance information while you were in the office. If you did give us a copy of your card and you’re still receiving a bill, it may be because we failed to link your information to the visit properly. Either way, if you let us know, we can easily correct the problem.

Q:   Both parents carry insurance for their child, which policy is the primary?

A: All insurance companies follow the birthday rule. The parent whose birthday falls first in the year will be considered the primary insured. We are happy to bill both your primary and secondary insurance.

Glossary of Billing and Insurance Terms:

• Applied to deductible:   a portion of your bill, as defined by your insurance company, that you owe your provider
• Co-insurance:   the amount you must pay after your insurance has paid its portion, according to your Benefit contract. In many health plans, patients must pay for a portion of the allowed amount. For instance, if the plan pays 70% of he allowed amount, the patient pays the remaining 30%. If your plan is a preferred provider organization or other narrow network type of product, your co-insurance costs may be lower if you use the services of an in-network provider on the plan’s preferred provider list.
• Co-Payment (co-pay):   A predetermined, fixed fee that you pay at the time of service. Copayment amounts vary by service and may vary depending on which provider (in-network, out-of-network, or provider type) you use. The amounts also may vary based on the type of service you are receiving (for instance, primary care vs. specialty care).
• Deductibles : The amount a patient pays before the insurance plan pays anything. In most cases, deductibles apply per person per calendar year. With preferred provider organizations (PPOs), deductibles usually apply to all services, including lab tests, hospital stays and clinic or doctor’s office visits.
• Health maintenance organization (HMO):   Health maintenance organization (HMO) (refers to health insurance)—these health insurance plans require enrolled patients to receive call their care from a specific group of providers (except for some emergency care). The plan may require your primary care doctor to make a referral before you can receive specialty care. An HMO may require you to live or work in its service area to be eligible for coverage. HMO’s often provide integrated care and focus on prevention and wellness.
• In-network:   A group of doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers preferred and contracted with your insurance company. You will receive maximum benefits if you receive care from in-network providers. Depending on your insurance plan, your benefits may be reduced or not covered at all if your receive services from providers who are not in network.

As a new patient, we ask that you contact our office first, so that our reception staff is able to build your child a profile. Before you place a call to our office, be sure to have your child’s health insurance card in front of you as we will need the policy number, group number and any copay amount in order to complete the profile.  If you don’t have health insurance or your child has not been added to a health plan yet, no problem, just mention that to the reception staff and they will help you.

Our office is contracted with all the Medicaid plans offered by Idaho and Washington State. In order to start seeing our practice, we will need to be listed as the primary care provider on the card. If you are unsure or need to change this information, please call your insurance company to request this change.

During check-in, we will ask for the following:

• Current Health Insurance Card - please note that all co-payments are expected at the time of service. If you do not have insurance, please contact our office so we may discuss payment arrangements with you.

We ask that you give us five business days to process your child’s prescription refill request. This allows the physician who prescribed the medication to review your child’s record and call if there are any questions. In order to expedite your request, please contact your pharmacy to have them fax us a request.

All controlled substance prescriptions do need to be called in each month.  Please give the physician five business days to process your child’s refill request. These prescriptions are not available to pick up in the office, they will be electronically sent to your pharmacy.

New Delhi [India], September 9 : Former Indian diplomat KP Fabian on Monday said that the two warring sides, Russia and Ukraine, should demonstrate sincerity and transparency in their efforts to achieve a ceasefire, as a mediator can only help towards a peaceful resolution, ahead of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval's upcoming visit to Moscow.

Speaking to ANI, Fabian underscored the opportunity for India to contribute to the peace process, particularly during the BRICS NSA meeting scheduled to take place ahead of the BRICS Summit in Kazan from October 22-24.

"No war will end until the belligerents want to end it. You can take a horse to the stream, but can you make it drink? No. So unless the two belligerents want a ceasefire, a mediator can only help. A mediator cannot produce a ceasefire, you now? So let us see," said Fabian.

Ajit Doval's visit, according to Fabian, holds importance beyond just attending the meeting. He expects that Doval will discuss the Ukraine crisis with Russian NSA Nikolai Patrushev, his Russian counterpart, and other key officials.

"It is highly probable that Ajit Doval will discuss with his Russian counterpart, and also with other counterparts, how to end this war in Ukraine. There are two wars: one between Russia and Ukraine, and the other between Russia and NATO, led by the United States," Fabian said, emphasising the complexity of the conflict.

Fabian noted the extensive damage in Ukraine and stressed that ending the conflict is crucial. "We don't know how many thousands of human beings, whether military or civilian, have been killed. But we do know that a good part of Ukraine has been destroyed," he stated, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message of peace remains relevant.

"This has to end. As Prime Minister Modi has been saying, this is not the era for war."

After the West's unsuccessful talks to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, India steps up for the job. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NSA Ajit Doval is headed to Moscow for crucial talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

As the Russia-Ukraine war drags on, several world leaders have pinned hope on India to broker peace. During his visit to Russia, Ajit Doval is likely to hold discussions regarding peace process in the region.

NSA Doval's visit follows PM Modi's trips to Russia and Ukraine where he held talks with both leaders and reiterated India's stance. PM Modi emphasized the need for peaceful resolutions of conflict and said, 'India is not neutral and we have chosen the side of peace'.

Notably, Russian President Putin on September 5 said that China, India and Brazil could mediate potential peace talks against Ukraine. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also mentioned India as a probable mediator after meeting Zelenskyy. India has walked a diplomatic tightrope throughout the conflict, reiterating its stance and inching towards a position to broker peace.

Fabian also remarked on the changing dynamics of Western support for Ukraine, citing diminishing financial and military aid. "There are also limits to what the West can do in terms of both money and weapons," he said, noting that countries like Germany and Hungary have scaled back their support.

With declining aid, Ukraine could be more inclined towards seeking a ceasefire, but as Fabian pointed out, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also declared his intent to pursue victory.

In the broader context of BRICS diplomacy, Fabian highlighted Putin's strategic efforts to secure a favourable declaration from the upcoming BRICS Summit. "President Putin is playing his cards exceedingly well... He wants a declaration after the summit to include words on this conflict that are favourable to Russia," Fabian said.

Doval's visit to Moscow is viewed as a multi-dimensional diplomatic effort. Foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev highlighted that Doval's participation in the BRICS NSA meeting is just one aspect. He is also expected to carry a message from Prime Minister Modi to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This message could be pivotal in India's diplomatic approach to the Ukraine conflict.

Emergency medical care is provided free to all foreign nationals in case of life-threatening conditions that require immediate medical treatment. You will be given first aid and emergency surgery when necessary in all public health care facilities. Any further treatment will be free only to people with a Compulsory Medical Insurance, or you will need to pay for medical services. Public health care is provided in federal and local care facilities. These include 1. Urban polyclinics with specialists in different areas that offer general medical care. 2. Ambulatory and hospitals that provide a full range of services, including emergency care. 3. Emergency stations opened 24 hours a day, can be visited in a case of a non-life-threatening injury. It is often hard to find English-speaking staff in state facilities, except the largest city hospitals, so you will need a Russian-speaking interpreter to accompany your visit to a free doctor or hospital. If medical assistance is required, the insurance company should be contacted before visiting a medical facility for treatment, except emergency cases. Make sure that you have enough money to pay any necessary fees that may be charged.

Insurance in Russia

Travelers need to arrange private travel insurance before the journey. You would need the insurance when applying for the Russian visa. If you arrange the insurance outside Russia, it is important to make sure the insurer is licensed in Russia. Only licensed companies may be accepted under Russian law. Holders of a temporary residence permit or permanent residence permit (valid for three and five years respectively) should apply for «Compulsory Medical Policy». It covers state healthcare only. An employer usually deals with this. The issued health card is shown whenever medical attention is required. Compulsory Medical Policyholders can get basic health care, such as emergencies, consultations with doctors, necessary scans and tests free. It is standard practice for expats to visit private clinics and hospitals for check-ups, routine health care, and dental care, and only use public services in case of an emergency. Insurance companies can usually provide details of clinics and hospitals in the area speak English (or the language required) and would be the best to use. Investigate whether there are any emergency services or numbers, or any requirements to register with them. Providing copies of medical records is also advised.

Moscow hosts some Western medical clinics that can look after all of your family’s health needs. While most Russian state hospitals are not up to Western standards, Russian doctors are very good.

Several Russian hospitals in Moscow have special arrangements with GlavUPDK (foreign diplomatic corps administration in Moscow) and accept foreigners for checkups and treatments at more moderate prices that the Western medical clinics.

In a case of a medical emergency, dial 112 and ask for the ambulance service (skoraya pomoshch). Staff on these lines most certainly will speak English, still it is always better to ask a Russian speaker to explain the problem and the exact location.

Ambulances come with a doctor and, depending on the case, immediate first aid treatment may be provided. If necessary, the patient is taken to the nearest emergency room or hospital, or to a private hospital if the holder’s insurance policy requires it.
