What is trip A and trip B in the car ? We think you’ve got the answer. But some categories of motor vehicles, including trip 1 and trip 2, are still confusing.

Are you wondering what function these 2 trips have? They are included in the driver information center (DIC). It provides information about the number of miles you have traveled since the last reset of the meter.

Not all vehicles are available for trip 1 and trip 2. If you want to know more information about them, you can open the Menu by pressing the menu button.

Fuel and mileage information will appear. You just need to scroll down to see trip 1 and trip 2.

What does trip A mean on a car ? Overall, it allows you to track the miles you have traveled after each refueling.

It will help you to know the total distance equivalent to your full gas tank. You will get a reasonable estimate when you are about to run out of gas to fill up.

Resetting Trip A and Trip B

Everytime I reset Trip B, it resets Trip A and the lifetime miles per gallon for the car. How do I change this so it will only reset Trip B, and not Trip A (or so they can be reset separately)? I have a Venza LE. Thanks!  

If Trip A is being displayed and you press and hold the TRIP button only Trip A should get reset if anything else is happening somethings wrong. Needless to say the same applies for trip B.  

On mine, when I press and hold Trip B, it resets the miles per gallon (not the actual miles) on the odometer and Trip A. I want to be able to set A and B separately, and also not reset the mileage for the lifetime of the car every time I reset A or B  

That is weird. RTFM again.  

I'm sorry. I didn't state that clearly. It does reset the miles, and the miles per gallon on all three. I want to be able to just reset A and/or B but do each separately.

Where is trip A and B on the odometer?

I have the 2019 Hybrid Rav-4 (Sol Trim) (I'm based in Ireland). I can't seem to find a way to display different trips (like Trip A and Trip B) on the odometer. It will only show the total mileage of the vehicle, but I can't seem to reset the trip, to be able to calculate accurate at the pump miles per gallon. Does anybody know where I could get the trip A and B to display?  

You really need to read the owner's manual if you want to know everything you need to know about the Rav4, on mine it's on the instrument cluster itself, it's a traditional stem "Odo trip switch" sticking out of the lower left pod as shown in the owner's manual instrument cluster section.  

Thank you Quickdtoo for the quick reply. Found the stem switch. Apologies, I've had the car now for just over three weeks and didn't even realize that switch was there. Hadn't even noticed it, until you pointed it out to me. Admittedly, most of my driving since I took delivery of the car has been in the dark, and the switch is quite concealed in the dark. I was also, probably a bit upset, when I wrote the post. I was looking for a quick reply, in order to be able to properly measure my fuel consumption. I did 450 kilometers with the new car and had to fill it with 44 litres of petrol. That's damn close to 10L/100km. That's even worse than my 20 year old Jaguar S-Type. And for a hybrid as well, that's really shocking. The dealer had filled the tank before delivery and the meter did read as full, but sometimes, you never know how full it really is. So I needed to accurately measure it. I have to say though, that even after I found the switch, it just allows me to reset the odometer for trip A and Trip B. It doesn't allow me to reset the whole travel info (average L/100km) for each trip (A/B), which is slightly annoying. It's not the end of the world. I just assumed it would be similar to my wife's Prius (2014 model) which allows you to reset the info for each trip (A/B), and is fairly straightforward, with a button on the steering wheel.  

If you would read the owner's manual as I suggested, you would see that holding the trip switch in will reset that setting. You should be able download the owner's manual at https://www.toyota.ie/tme?#/my-toyota/eManual I haven't used the paper copy of the manual yet, I always use the e-version on my PC, laptop or phone, much easier to use the search function.  

Thanks, Yeah, I understand the bit about pressing and holding the switch to reset. I get that, and had done it. My issue was that it only resets the mileage of the trip, but not the full trip info, as the L/100km. I have downloaded the manual, and it looks like it'll just be a matter of me having to reset the fuel consumption everytime I reset the trip (2 steps rather than one). It won't do it automatically when I reset the trip. I also prefer to have separate readings of fuel consumption as per overall, trip A and Trip B. Instead, looks like everytime I reset that info, I'll lose the overall consumption. I was probably spoilt with other cars making this very straightforward (including other Toyotas). I'll read further in the manual, and I hope I'm proven wrong.  

On the main fuel economy screen in the big center display that has the fuel economy charts, you can select “clip” to reset the fuel economy tracking and start a new “trip”. I do that when I fill up. You can also see the historical trips.  

Thanks Ordered Chaos, I'll try that tomorrow morning and see how that works. I'll let you know how that goes.  

On my previous Rav4s, a '15 Ltd and a '16 Ltd HV, the onboard fuel economy has always been optimistic by 1½-3mpg, so I don't go be that at all, I calculate fuel economy by miles driven divided by gallons used, using the onboard display as a fuel economy standard isn't real but it's always encouraging, but it's never matched actual fuel used, some here have reported it comes close, but the majority know it's optimistic at best. My display on the XLE Premium gas model has been showing 34-36mpg on any trip of 20-30 miles at speeds of 50-60mph, but I know that's not what I'm really getting, I won't be doing any long trips until April, so it will be a while before I know what it's really capable of, most of my driving this time of year is short errands with an occasional longer drive, plus I've used remote start several times which kills fuel economy.  

34-36mpg sounds very encouraging, especially for a non-hybrid. Even if it's off by 2 to 3mpg, still encouraging. My 10L/100km however, is the equivalent of 23.5mpg. All my driving so far has been like what you mentioned, short errands. So obviously it's worst case scenario. I'm hopeful, that as the engine beds in a bit and the weather gets warmer, I'll see some improvement.  

I wish the RAV4 kept track of fuel economy for each trip odometer. My last Subaru did that and was pretty nice.  

Exactly. I understand it's never accurate, but at least it gives you a reasonable idea of how things are going. What's more annoying, is that the feature is available on my wife's 2014 Toyota Prius. So obviously Toyota definitely knows how to do it. I had just assumed that if it were on an old Prius, then it would automatically be available on a 2019 Rav4. :confused  

Just a note on the fuel economy, I wouldn't judge it by that first tank, my first tank was terrible, first of all, it had 21 miles on it when I picked it up the day after it came off the truck, so I know it had been driven by either employees at the dealership or on test drives by customers, plus they had to drive it to refuel it, and for all I know it wasn't really filled completely, the gauge can be deceiving. And might have been fueled before they drove it the 18-20 odd miles after it arrived at the port, or how it was driven for that matter. I was also told that the service tech that did the initial programming took a while since it was the first he'd done on a '19, so a lot of time may have been spent just idling. So my first tank economy was just over 24mpg, the only highway miles I put on it were from the dealer home, about 25 miles and a 30 mile round trip to a nearby city for lunch, the rest was around town at 25-35mph. So don't be discouraged by the first tank economy, or lack of. :wink  

Thanks, That sounds encouraging. Especially the time spent idling bit. Mine had 8 kilometers on it when I picked it up (so roughly around 5 miles). I'll report back after the next fill up as I'll be able to get an accurate measure then. Thanks for your help and input @Quickdtoo  

My wife is always boasting about the display features on her '15 Prius and now her '18 Prius Prime, they show all kinds of info, she even programs in the cost of fuel and how much it costs her for each trip! I don't remember my '16 Ltd Hybrid having that feature if it did. FWIW, my first tank on it was 29mpg this time of year, it got better as the seasons warmed and I learned how to drive an HV, 34-38mpg was a more accurate average then.  

I wonder if the 4.5 HVs will have any of those trip info features or not. I still don't think there is an in-depth review out there yet, and probably won't be until it comes out.

India’s Modi likely to meet Zelensky in Ukraine after Russia trip

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi will make his first visit to Ukraine later this week, the foreign ministry confirmed on Monday.

He will likely fly to Kyiv between 21-23 August, about a month after he met Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Mr Modi will have talks with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. They previously met on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan in May and discussed trade and expanding ties.

They have also spoken by phone several times since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Mr Modi will most likely visit Poland as well, the foreign ministry said.

The visit to Ukraine is intended to reassure India’s partners in the West, who were apparently not too happy with Mr Modi’s visit to Moscow on 8-9 July.

Mr Zelensky said at the time, without naming Mr Modi, that it was a “huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day”.

Mr Modi’s visit coincided with a series of daytime Russian attacks across Ukraine, which killed 41 people and wounded more than 150.

New Delhi has adopted a carefully balanced policy on the Ukraine war, neither criticising nor condoning it, and has sought to increase trade links with Russia while building stronger ties with the West.

The Indian leader did, however, offer some veiled criticism of what was happening in Ukraine at the end of his meeting with Mr Putin. “Be it war, conflicts, terror attacks – everyone who believes in humanity is pained when there is loss of lives,” Mr Modi said. “But when innocent children are murdered, when we see innocent children dying, it is heart-wrenching. That pain is immense.”

He reiterated New Delhi’s position that Moscow and Kyiv should end the war through diplomacy. “Solutions are not possible on the battleground,” he said.

The South Asian country has offered to support measures to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Mr Modi’s upcoming visit to one of India’s oldest allies was aimed at improving bilateral trade and cooperation in areas ranging from nuclear energy to medicine, officials said.

India has traditionally had close economic and defence ties with Moscow and it has bought vast quantities of oil from Russia despite Western sanctions, explaining that it needed to secure its own interests first.

Kyiv, meanwhile, has asked New Delhi to help rebuild its economy, with Ukranian officials inviting investment from Indian companies at a business summit in January.

Using Trip Odometer - Setting Triggers for Trip A + Trip B

My vehicle is days old to me and I'm trying to set it up the way I like. I've been driving a 2016 Acura RDX and can't help but think the trip odometers would work similarly. However, the rep at the car dealer didn't know the answer... So, I ask you. For my RDX, I have Trip A set to trigger when I fuel the vehicle. My dealer set this up for the CRV for me. My Trip B is triggered every time I set the car. That way, I get to watch the fuel efficiency of every day's trips. I like this for work because I'm tracking mileage and I love to watch efficiency. Is there a way to set up Trip B's trigger? Thanks in advance!

Trip A and Trip B

Is it possible that those trip meter resest to 0 after 2000km? If yes why Honda did this? This is the 3rd time they came back to 0 but they kept the average l/100km.  

I suppose the simple answer is that they're only for short trips, but I've also experienced them "wrapping" around to 0 again on long road trips. I suppose they weren't thinking about North America when they put the 2000 KM limit. Just out of curiosity, what is the limit in miles? Bill  

Mine reset to 0 at 2000 miles, fuel economy didn't reset however. It was disconcerting as I was on a 2500 mile trip and initially thought there was an issue.  

This is bad because I wanted to use Trip B to calculate kms between oil changes.  

If you reset the MIL when you do your oil change the light will let you know when it's time to do it again. Interesting to know about the rollover as I'd never have seen it. Trip A is my tank mileage and Trip B for my daily trip. I don't think I'll ever see a 2000 mile tank.  

I've noticed the 2k mile turnover twice. As with the others, I observed that the mpg wasn't effected  

Are you sure about that? When I finished my NY-IA-WI-MI-DC-NY trip, I had 3050 (miles) on my Trip A. My car is an 01, but my dash comes from some other year vehicle. (I really don't know what year.)  

When I bought mine, I decided to use TripB as my personal lifetime MPG rather than reset the main lifetime MPG. I did this not knowing about the 2000 mile limit. I can confirm, though, that the mileage is still calculated correctly and is adjusting normally based on my usage. I track mileage the oldfashioned way with a logbook and it matches what the car tells me within a percent or two. Mine currently has over 24000 miles since I reset it. If I had to do it over, I'd have just reset the main one (and still may). I use the FCD toggle to track my daily trips since that gives me a 3rd independent timer.  

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I think resetting the LMPG is as dishonest as rolling back an odometer. Honda should not have made it possible.  

Huhh!!?? Did I miss something? Where in the book or on the dash does it state "LMPG"?? To me it says TRIP A or TRIP B...  

It's fairly common knowledge the cumulative total miles the car has been driven and the FCD figure for that distance are the LMPG, UNLESS it has been reset by someone without any scruples. The Trip A & B and FCD toggle are completely different entities from the odometer and it's LMPG.

So I suppose if you could easily reset the odometer to reflect your miles put on the car you would do that and thus misrepresent the cars true past?:angry7: Although a vehicle can be conferred a woman's gender a woman is not a vehicle, caddie.:headshake: "...and until avatars are provided":dunno:

wstander has a Gen 2, for which I don't know the answer. The topic has drifted and I think he was asking about lmpg reset? The FCD of course toggles the segment display and whatever Trip is showing at the time, Gen 1 anyway.

Indira's road trip with the president

Timor-Leste has had a pull over me since the 1990s. As the host of SBS TV's Late News, I reported on this fledgling democracy's tragedies and traumas, and the inspiring resilience of its people.

This visit, for ABC TV's Compass , will be the first time I'll set foot on Timorese soil. 

I want to know how the Timorese are faring after their traumatic past.

How is this largely Catholic nation navigating a volatile world post-COVID, with regional power shifts and the perils of climate change?

And what role should Australia be playing in its future?

One of our closest neighbours

I strap on my seatbelt with a mix of excitement and trepidation.

The propellers whirr into action as our Dash 8 buzzes along the runway and lifts off like a dragonfly seeking the sun.

Timor-Leste is not much more than a speck — just 15,000 square kilometres. To help visualise just how tiny that is, Tasmania is 4.6 times larger. That makes Timor-Leste one of the world's tiniest nations.

It's also one of the poorest. Forty per cent of Timorese live below the poverty line.

As I glance out the window, our plane makes a gentle turn and dips towards the sea.

We fly through a soft mist and emerge to see steep mountain peaks covered with dense jungles.

This is my first glimpse of Timor-Leste. It's breathtaking. It looks like a film set from Jurassic Park.

We glide over the port of Dili. It's electric with activity; a mishmash of moored cargo ships, rusting storage tanks, fishing boats, rickety wooden jetties and dusty streets buzzing with buses and scooters.

We skim over a row of palm trees and our plane lands on a runway.

Dili airport isn't much more than an airstrip with a large tin shed and several billboards welcoming visitors.

As the plane door swings open, I'm mugged by a blast of stifling humid air. Welcome to Timor-Leste!

My Compass TV crew and I are staying in downtown Dili, surrounded by street markets and rows of homes built with cement sheets, corrugated iron and tarpaulins.

They look makeshift but this is what permanent housing looks like in many parts of the country.

Meeting the president

One of my guides during this filming trip will be none other than my old acquaintance and current president of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta.

We meet at his compound, situated on a dusty road grandly named Robert F Kennedy Boulevard.

Ramos-Horta has offered to take me on a sightseeing trip through the streets of Dili in his bright blue Mini Moke. It has a canvas roof and open doors.

The restoration of this Moke has been Ramos-Horta's eccentric labour of love. This is not the type of vehicle you would expect someone who has survived an assassination attempt to drive.

His security team travel close behind us in dark-windowed SUVs.

As we zip along the potholed roads, locals beep their horns at us and small children run up to the Moke, cheering in the local language Tetun: "Bomdia, avo!" — "Good morning, Grandpa!"

A traumatic past

I first met the multi-lingual José Ramos-Horta in the late 1990s when he was a regular studio guest on my SBS news program.

At the time, he was an ambassador without a nation, passionate and erudite, travelling the world and raising awareness about the atrocities the Indonesian military was committing in his homeland.

The struggles of this former Portuguese colony date back to its murderous past.

A quarter of Timor-Leste's population of 1.3 million people was killed during a brutal 24-year military occupation by Indonesia.

Against all odds the Timorese finally did win their independence. In a referendum held in 1999, three-quarters of its people voted to throw off the shackles of Indonesian rule.

Sadly, the euphoria was short-lived. Australian peacekeepers were called in as the violence flared again when Indonesian-backed militia murdered thousands and destroyed much of the country's infrastructure.

Peace was eventually restored and Timor-Leste was officially declared an independent nation in 2002.

While his comrades fought their occupiers in the mountains, Ramos-Horta waged a charm offensive to drum up international financial and diplomatic support.

From the UN cocktail circuit to television news programs like mine, Ramos-Horta was a man on a mission.

His dedication garnered him a Nobel Peace Prize and soon afterwards Timor-Leste won the freedom that had so long eluded it.

Tackling malnutrition

The 74-year-old president may now be fully grey, but the fire hasn't left him.

He shares his disappointment with the slow pace of reconstruction in his country, blaming everyone from NGOs to a lack of international investors.

The presidential role is a largely ceremonial one and you can sense his frustration.

His greatest concern is the worsening poverty and malnutrition in Timor-Leste. Half the children under five are malnourished.

One of the ways this is partly being addressed is through the Kantina Matak, a canteen started on the presidential grounds by queer-rights activist and presidential adviser Bella Galhos.

Kantina Matak provides up to 500 free meals a day to local children. It is a drop in the ocean compared to the need, but the food kitchen is changing lives. The children's joy is infectious.

The next generation

Harnessing the potential of the next generation is clearly a tension point here.

Younger firebrands like Bella Galhos are hungry to lead, but the "Generation of 75", which includes resistance heroes such as Ramos-Horta and Xanana Gusmao, have a steely grip on power.

The age divide becomes clear when talk turns to what economic direction Timor-Leste should take.

Many younger people I speak to want climate-resilient solutions; the established leadership still embraces fossil fuels.

Much hope for future economic prosperity lies with the country's Greater Sunrise oil and gas fields.

Australia has recently offered some financial concessions to kick-start the stalled joint development.

With China expanding its influence in the region, Australia has been redoubling efforts to rebuild its relationship with Timor-Leste following the rift caused by the gas treaty spying scandal .

It was revealed that in 2004 Australia's spying agency illegally bugged the Timorese cabinet offices to secure an unfair advantage in negotiations. 

It's been a strain on our friendship ever since. 

A deeply spiritual country

Ramos-Horta wants to take me to one of his favourite parts of the country — Ermera in the Highlands.

So, the next day our film crew join the presidential convoy which will also be delivering some food aid — bundles of blankets, oil and rice to be shared among the neediest families.

We navigate bad roads with steep drops as we climb higher and higher, passing coffee plantations and roadside villages.

Huge crowds have gathered in Ermera to greet the president and our crew.

There's an elaborate ceremony featuring drummers and statuesque tribespeople wearing feathered headdresses.

We're presented with vibrant Tais – traditional woven cloths.

Locals recreate a marriage proposal ceremony where goats and pigs are offered as part of the bride's dowry.

Animist beliefs still form an important part of the culture. While once frowned upon by the local church, animism now sits more comfortably alongside catholic teachings.

Faith is a central tenet here. Even recent child sex scandals involving high-ranking priests, including Nobel prize winner Bishop Belo , have not received the widespread condemnation we would expect.

Belief in the infallibility of their war heroes is hard to shake, as demonstrated by the rockstar crowd gathering around the president today.

A banquet for 700 people has been prepared in the village community hall. Sharing what little they have is also a distinct Timorese trait.

This very traditional society is a difficult backdrop for many young LGBTIQ Timorese struggling to live openly.

This year for the very first time, a group travelled to Sydney to represent Timor-Leste in the Sydney Mardi Gras.

Resilience and hope

Back in Dili, we retire to a nearby beachside cafe to watch a dazzling sunset. I’m reminded of the beauty of this place and its people and the costly price the Timorese have paid for their freedom. 

Their capacity to forgive is truly inspiring. I have not encountered any talk of retribution or revenge for what they have suffered. 

And once-brutal occupiers the Indonesians are now valued neighbours and trade partners. 

The Timorese have much to teach us about resilience and the strength of community.

If faith and optimism — with a little help from good neighbours — can deliver a brighter future, Timor-Leste may well be on the right path.

How Offseason Tampa Trip Strengthened Bond Between Several Alabama Offensive Players

Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan described football as a game that rewards people that trust each other when talking about the relationship between a quarterback and his pass-catchers. Sheridan was a college quarterback himself at Michigan and has worked with quarterbacks at various jobs around the country, so he almost two decades of experience watching that relationship play out.

"The anticipation that's required to play and to count on one another when the wideout runs the route to be in a certain spot and the quarterback is going to throw it at the right time to the right location– I think that requires trust, and we're building that everyday," Sheridan said.

This offseason, seven Crimson Tide offensive players–– Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, Emmanuel Henderson Jr., Justice Haynes, Jaren Hamilton, CJ Dippre and Richard Young–– spent five days training at House of Athlete in Tampa, Florida to further build those bonds and prepare for the season.

"That trip was amazing," Haynes said. "It was a trip where we got closer as a brotherhood. We spent five days in Florida together. We were working out, but we had chemistry. We were learning the offense. We were learning things, helping each other, pushing each other just like we push each other here."

In the middle of summer break, it was an opportunity for those players to get out of Tuscaloosa and into a new environment, but still work on football. The guys were also able to have some fun shopping, eating together and hanging out. Haynes joked that there are a little better shopping options in Tampa than Tuscaloosa.

"We really went down there just to really build our connection with each other and build that relationship," Henderson said. "Get away from Alabama and do some things outside of here. It went really well.”

Henderson is entering his third season with the Crimson Tide at wide receiver and said he already had a good relationship with Milroe before the trip, but it grew stronger with both Milroe and Simpson.

"It’s improved tremendously from the spring," Henderson said. "We built a great connection— not only with Jalen, but Ty. Just practicing with each other has been going real great.”

If you've listened to any Milroe press conference or media availability over the last year, there's a good chance you've heard the phrase "getting 1 percent better every day." Whether he threw for four touchdowns or had multiple interceptions in a game, the messaging doesn't change much. Milroe is constantly focused on consistent, steady improvement. And that didn't slow down for the Alabama quarterback in the offseason.

"From that time when the offseason starts until now, there’s a lot of growth that happens if you have the mindset of 1 percent," Milroe explained.

As the returning starting quarterback, Milroe already has a good relationship with a lot of his teammates. He was voted a team captain in 2023. Kalen DeBoer has consistently pointed to Milroe as one of the guys who helped hold the team together during the coaching transition when Nick Saban retired back in January.

A quarterback is usually looked to as the leader of the offense and the team as a whole, and his work ethic can set the tone for everyone else. It was the second summer in a row that Milroe and a group of teammates went to train in Florida, and this trip helped strengthen the bonds that had been created last season.

"Jalen definitely works hard," Dippre said. "I went down to Tampa with him in May, me and a few guys. We trained. Just having another connection on another level that we definitely became closer. He’s become closer with a lot of other players on offense."

The connection is playing out as the Crimson Tide is in its third week of fall camp and just over two weeks away from the season opener against Western Kentucky..

It’s not a conundrum terribly many people would have to deal with: “I’ve just bought a disused psychiatric hospital, now what am I going to do with it?”

This is something two entrepreneurial Brits Les Bone and Vanessa Stanley-Johns must surely

have discussed back in 2016 after buying the old Charters Towers psychiatric hospital 140km

southwest of Townsville: a sprawling 80ha, 1950s-designed complex that once housed

300 to 600 patients.

It operated as Mossman Hall Psychiatric Hospital from 1954 until it was closed in 2001 due to a change in thinking in the treatment of patients where many were rehabilitated back in to society.

The size of the hospital is staggering, with its grand front office block, it’s bitumen roads, it barrack-style buildings in slow decay denoting what a monumental undertaking it was for two people to take on a project the size of a suburb.

My first question to Les, a former professional squash player and now enthusiastic asylum owner is: “Why did you buy a psychiatric hospital?”

“Well, we thought it was such a beautiful property, and being a Pom and used to old properties we thought it was a great opportunity to create something new and repurpose the old hospital,” he said.

Curiously Les and Vanessa both have a remarkable vision for the estate, now called Kernow – the Cornish word for Cornwall, from where Les originates – piece by piece converting the languishing old hospital into a first class resort with at present, fifteen fully furnished luxury apartments.

These apartments – in what are converted hospital dormitories – are indeed stunning, exquisitely designed and furnished by Vanessa, whose flair for interior design has created an individual theme in each unit,

“We wanted to do something different for the town” Vanessa tells me.

“We tried to do it as we wanted it to be when we were travelling – somewhere that was homely and smart – but not a cold hotel room…”

Indeed, the old hospital is now a popular venue for corporate business functions with a fully

operational conference centre and swimming pool – and shortly work will commence on a further 13 suites and construction on a three-megalitre lagoon.

Nevertheless, despite the exquisite work the pair have achieved in creating the apartments, Les

takes me on a tour of parts of the hospital they haven’t touched yet, venturing down a dark corridor in what was once called The Dalrymple Wing – a derelict concrete building where patients were once housed in tiny, bare rooms the size of solitary confinement cells.

“A typical room for one of the ‘cusp’ clients I think we call them ’ Les tells me, inferring to one the more unpredictable inmates who once inhabited the hospitable.

After all these years so much of the hospital’s original infrastructure is still sitting there intact – the clinical, communal bathrooms, laundries, kitchens – all a stark reminder of what this place once was and it’s not long before you’re envisaging Jack Nicholson receiving medication from Nurse Ratched.

But I have to ask Les the obvious question, do you call it a psychiatric hospital or an asylum?

He smiles, “Well I like to call it an asylum because I think it’s more amusing for people to say, I‘ve stayed overnight in my first asylum.”

TEL AVIV, Israel — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will use his ninth diplomatic mission to the Middle East since the start of the Israel-Hamas war to press for the quick conclusion of an elusive cease-fire agreement.

Blinken arrived in Israel on Sunday before what mediators have billed as a last push to reach a deal that will take place in Cairo later this week. He will meet with top Israeli officials on Monday before traveling to Egypt on Tuesday.

Late last week, the three countries mediating the proposed cease-fire reported progress on a deal under which Israel would halt most military operations in Gaza and release a number of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hamas.

A senior official traveling with Blinken said his arrival in the region comes at a “critical time” in the cease-fire talks and the secretary would will press all parties on the importance of concluding it quickly to end civilian suffering in Gaza and prevent the conflict from engulfing the region. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to preview Blinken’s travels.

Shortly before Blinken arrived in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a Cabinet meeting there are areas where Israel can be flexible and unspecified areas where it won’t be. “We are conducting negotiations and not a scenario in which we just give and give,” he said.

In addition to Netanyahu, Blinken will meet Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and President Isaac Herzog on Monday.

On Friday, the U.S. and fellow mediators Egypt and Qatar said they were closing in on a deal after two days of talks in Doha, with American and Israeli officials expressing cautious optimism. But Hamas has signaled resistance to what it called new demands by Israel.

The evolving proposal calls for a three-phase process in which Hamas would release all hostages abducted during its Oct. 7 attack, which triggered the deadliest war fought between Israelis and Palestinians . In exchange, Israel would withdraw its forces from Gaza and release Palestinian prisoners.

Officials said the U.S. has presented proposals to bridge all the gaps remaining between the Israeli and Hamas positions. Formal responses to the U.S. outline are expected this week and could lead to a cease-fire declaration unless the talks collapse, as has happened with multiple previous efforts to end the 10-month-old war.

U.S. President Joe Biden has seemed optimistic that a deal could be at hand, saying Friday “we are closer than we’ve ever been.”

Asked Sunday about a cease-fire, Biden told reporters: “We’re still underway. We’re not giving up. Still possible.”

Vice President Kamala Harris , campaigning in Pennsylvania, was asked if Netanyahu is ready to strike a cease-fire deal.

“I will not speak for him, but I will tell you that these conversations are ongoing and we are not giving up, and we are going to continue to work very hard on this,” the Democratic presidential nominee said. “We’ve got to get a cease-fire and we got to get those hostages out.”

The renewed push to conclude a cease-fire comes as the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has climbed past 40,000 since the war began, according to the Palestinian health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilian and militant deaths. Israel went in to Gaza after the Hamas surprise attacks inside Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians.

Since then, fears for a rapid and dangerous escalation to other parts of the region have ebbed and flowed. Those fears are once again elevated as Iran and its proxies threaten retaliation for the killings in Lebanon of senior Hezbollah commanders and in Iran of the head of Hamas’ political wing.

Russia has claimed to have taken control of the Donetsk town of Niu-York.

Moscow described the town as a strategically important logistics hub, in eastern Ukraine.

While Russia refers to Niu-York as Novgorodskoye - the Russian spelling of the settlement's Soviet-era name - Ukraine gave it back its original name in 2021.

In a statement, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have "liberated" the town.

Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian military said that heavy fighting was under way in the Toretsk sector, including in Niu-York.

Sky News has not verified Russia's claims, but if true it would show Moscow is creeping ever closer to the larger population centres in the region.

Over 122,000 Russians have fled the border regions amid Ukraine's Kursk invasion, according to Russian media.

Residents have left their homes in huge numbers following Kyiv's surprise counter-punch, TASS said, citing the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

Mr Zelenskyy has previously said that his forces have captured 1,250sq/km (480 square miles) and 92 settlements in Kursk so far.

Ukraine has a "wide-open" opportunity to seize more Russian territory in their Kursk invasion, but risks Moscow making more gains inside Ukraine, says military analyst Professor Michael Clarke .

After a "fairly static" period, Prof Clarke said the war in Ukraine had entered a new stage of "dynamism" on the back of the Kursk invasion.

"I think this Kursk [attack] might get quite big, quite quickly, because the area to the west is almost wide-open to the Ukrainians now they've taken down the bridges off the Seim River.

"I wouldn't be at all surprised if they [Ukraine] go westwards."

But he warned any move of the Ukrainian counterpunch west would require a larger commitment of troops and resources.

With this, they "take a bigger risk", Prof Clarke said, as Moscow continues to make gains in eastern Ukraine.

Most recently, Russia took the Niu-York settlement.

Prof Clarke warned the likes of Toretsk was in "grave danger" and could fall within a matter of hours as well.

Satellite images appear to show pontoons being used to replace destroyed bridges in the Kursk region.

Amid Ukraine's unexpected lightning incursion into Russia, launched on 6 August, Kyiv has struck three bridges in the now contested region since Friday.

Satellite images by Planet Labs, analysed by The Associated Press, show what appear to be pontoon bridges in two different positions along the Seim River.

The first bridge appeared between the town of Glushkovo and Zvannoe on Saturday, only to be gone in images taken yesterday.

On Monday, smoke could be seen rising along the banks of the river nearby - often a sign of a strike.

Another pontoon bridge was visible around 1.1 miles (1.8km) east of one of the bridges destroyed on the Seim, in other images taken since Friday.

The pontoons were likely built by Russian troops trying to supply forces battling against the Ukrainian advance south of the river.

Sky News has not independently verified the images.

A fire continues to rage at a Russian oil depot for the third consecutive day, after it was hit by Ukrainian drones.

Russian authorities continue to battle the massive fire in the southern Rostov region.

The fire has burned across an area of 10,000 sq/m (107,639 sq/ft) in the town of Proletarsk, according to Russian state news agencies.

Of the 500 hundred firefighters involved in the operation, 41 have been injured and taken to hospital, TASS said, citing local officials.

Five of the firefighters were placed in emergency care, Governor Vasily Golubev said on the Telegram messaging app.

Around 20 of the 74 storage tanks at the huge diesel depot are on fire, the RIA news agency said, citing local administration boss Valery Gornich.

Ukraine often says it is retaliating against Russia's attacks on its own energy infrastructure, while Moscow brands such drone attacks on its oil infrastructure as acts of terrorism.

Baza, a Telegram channel close to Russian law enforcement, also said that the fire is likely to continue for several days.

 The White House says its policy on Ukraine using its weapons to strike deeper into Russia has not changed.

The policy has become a point of contention between Ukraine and its allies in light of Kyiv's lightning incursion into Kursk.

Ukraine has publicly called for broader permission to use weapons in proactively attacking Russia, but some Western nations supplying them remain reluctant.

"What I will say is that our policy has not changed. I just don't have anything else to add to that," press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, when asked if the administration had given the issue any more thought.

US policy allows Ukrainian strikes into Russia where attacks are emanating from - a looser position than originally taken.

But the Biden administration still limits the use of its weapons for long-range attacks into Russia. It has not publicly defined "long-range".

But the Times reported the US was blocking a British request to back the use of British Storm Shadow missiles in Russia.

A US official, speaking to Reuters, admitted that Ukraine's Kursk incursion "complicates the policy the more they progress into Russia".

If Ukraine starts taking villages and other non-military targets using US weapons and vehicles, that could raise questions about whether it's within the limitations Washington has imposed, the official was quoted as adding.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously said the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk was a result of allies taking this position for fear of crossing Vladimir Putin's "red lines".

At a gathering of Ukrainian diplomats, the Ukrainian president said: "If our partners lifted current restrictions on the use of weapons on Russian territory, we wouldn't need to physically enter the Kursk region to protect our border communities and eliminate Russia's potential for aggression.

"But for now, we cannot use all the weapons at our disposal and eliminate Russian terrorists where they are."

Czech Republic has said it will use some of the interest from seized Russian assets in the EU to pay for ammunition for Ukraine. 

The country's defence minister Jana Cernochova said the move will let them buy "hundreds of thousands of much-needed large-calibre ammunition". 

The Kremlin called the plan "theft" and said it would take legal action against anyone involved in the decision.

EU governments agreed in June to use €1.4bn (£1.2bn) in profits generated from Russian assets to buy arms and support for Ukraine.

The Czech Republic-led scheme will use some of this money.

Ms Cernochova said: "The European Union decided on it. We can thus buy hundreds of thousands of much-needed large-calibre ammunition for Ukraine. 

"It is another proof of the allies' trust in the Czech Republic and in our ammunition initiative. 

"This is a unique opportunity to support Ukraine, to use resources originally belonging to Russia and to save the public finances of European countries."

Almost 20,000 people have suffered blackouts after a Russian strike on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

The overnight attack on the northeastern Sumy region left 18,500 people across 72 towns and villages without power, regional officials said.

The regions sits on the Russian border neighbouring the Kursk region.

For context: Bombing attacks on Sumy have increased since Ukraine's incursion.

Ukrainian energy facilities have also been a near daily target of Russian attacks over the past six months.

Power cuts are regularly announced during peak evening consumption hours.

Russia launched its fifth missile attack on Kyiv this month overnight, Ukraine's military has said.

Air defence systems successfully repelled the strike, it added.

While the full scope of the attack on Kyiv remains unknown, Ukraine said that the attack likely involved cruise missiles.

Witnesses heard blasts early this morning in what sounded like air defence systems in operation, on the outskirts of the city.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, air defence systems shot down three missiles and 25 drones.

The strikes targeted nine regions in the centre, north and south of the country, Ukraine's air force said.

Kyiv has been under air raid alerts 41 times this month.
