8 – Kayak

Kayak Logo Design

Kayak is a well-known online travel agency founded in the United States in 2004. Since then, the company has expanded globally, and its website is now available in more than ten international languages.

Kayak's original logo was designed in 2004 and was only slightly changed in 2017. The original concept of the logo was so successful that it did not need to be changed significantly over time. The Kayak emblem consists of a word mark with each letter in white within an orange rectangle. The original logo used a soft, rounded sans-serif font and a thin horizontal line in grey to give the impression of an airport flight tableau.

In 2017, they updated the Kayak logo with a more vigorous and sharper typeface. The wordmark is now in a bold geometric sans serif typeface with straight, clean lines and traditionally cut edges and angles. The grey line that ran through the logo has been removed, resulting in a more uncluttered and minimalist design.

The Kayak logo's bright orange colour stands out and is instantly recognisable to customers. The colour is associated with excitement, energy and warmth, which is very fitting for a company in the travel industry. The simplicity of the design and the bold colour scheme convey the company's commitment to making travel easy and accessible for everyone.

9 – Transport for London

Transport For London Logo Design

Transport for London (TfL) is an integrated transport system in London that manages the city's public transport network, including the London Underground, buses, trams and rail services. TfL is known worldwide for its iconic and unique logo based on a roundel.

The roundel was first introduced in London Underground stations in the early 1900s to help passengers find their way around and locate their location and destination. Today it is a fundamental element of TfL's visual identity and is used across all modes of transport.

Each of TfL's transport divisions has its rondel representing its unique identity while providing a coherent and recognisable TfL brand. For example, the London Underground rondel is instantly recognisable with its red and blue colour scheme and a horizontal blue bar. In contrast, the London Overground rondel is orange and blue with a horizontal orange bar.

The roundel allows TfL to convey a sense of unity and consistency across all modes while communicating that each department has its purpose and identity. It is a testament to the power of strong visual branding and how it can help build trust and recognition across a diverse and complex transport network.

10 – Booking.com

Booking.com Logo Design

Booking.com is a renowned online travel agency belonging to Booking Holdings. Since its inception, the platform has offered various accommodation search and booking services, ranging from private budget accommodation to luxury hotels. In addition, the company provides transport and leisure options to its users so they can plan their perfect holiday.

Booking.com has a simple and minimalist visual identity, consisting only of the company name in a unique font. The brand has never had a solid background, and the colour scheme has changed slightly. The logo's simplicity is intentional as it is meant to be easily recognisable and memorable to users.

The font of the Booking.com logo is significant, with bevelled edges that tilt 23.5 degrees. This design choice represents the natural tilt of the Earth's axis, paying homage to the planet we all share. The bevelled edges of the letters give the typeface a unique and modern look, ideally in line with the company's mission to provide its customers with a unique and personalised travel experience.

TripAdvisor has changed to Tripadvisor, after undergoing several rebranding changes for the start of 2020.

The online travel company has launched a new logo, decapitalising a character in its brand name but most noticeably it has also given its owl mascot Ollie a new design.

Explaining the thinking behind the mascot modifications, Tripadvisor explained:

"We started by building on the shape of Ollie’s eyes, evolving his face from an oval to a circle and straightening out his ears and beak to make them pop,"

The line weight of the entire logo has been increased, aiming to make Ollie more recognisable in smaller sizes. Also, to help stand out from the brand name, Ollie has had a green circle placed around it.

Other than the changes to Ollie, the character"A" in Tripadvisor is no longer capitalised. "After 20 years, we are confident that people recognise our name and pronounce it as a single word. So whether you're reading about Tripadvisor in an article, using our app, or seeing the Tripadvisor logo as you travel, the brand now appears the same everywhere," the company said.

The new logo has now been placed across all international versions of Tripadvisor onsite and offsite. It will appear on all points of sale.

"Iconic brands build on their past, but evolve as the world does. Our new logo and visual identity is contemporary, accessible, and more reflective of the optimism and humanity that has made our brand what it is today," said Tripadvisor.

The Tripadvisor owl gets refined in rebrand by Mother Design

Marking its 20th year, the travel site now also has a bespoke typeface by Colophon and a set of pictograms, all inspired by the “circular nature” of its wise old logo.

Travel site Tripadvisor is 20 years old now, and though it still hosts 460 million visitors every month, the market for online holiday planning (see also the Skyscanner rebrand by Koto) is now crowded and worlds away from the landscape it was two decades ago. So, the anniversary gave the company the impetus to rebrand, enlisting New York studio Mother Design to rethink its brand identity for today. Starting out by refining its widely recognised owl logo, for both practical reasons and to add personality, this became the core of a whole visual refresh, including a new typeface, set of icons and colour palette.

“Our brief was to prepare the brand for the next 20 years by refining its most distinctive assets and introducing new ones, which would create a more cohesive visual identity,” explains Mark Sloan, head of design at the studio. “The previous logo had quite a bit more detail, and only worked when rendered in multiple colours – one red pupil, one green pupil and a yellow forehead. We kept its signature large circular eyes, built its ears and beak from a single triangle, and increased the line weight. By allowing the logo to live in one colour and reproduce well at all sizes, we’ve made it more flexible and less susceptible to misuse in the marketplace.”

The process of redesigning the logo is described as a reduction in complexity and amplification of character, the result being a simpler owl with a stronger personality.

Then, a typeface called Trip Sans was developed together with Colophon Foundry to echo components of the logo and its “circular nature,” as Sloan describes, channeling its approachable brand voice while also suiting the functional needs of the platform. “Establishing a range of weights will allow the brand to speak in its own typographic voice across surfaces — from the more expressive Ultra, which will be used primarily in communications, to the text weights which will handle long-form written reviews and the overall platform experience, and the Mono which provides a technical contrast to the family,” Sloan says.

To tie in with the typographic voice and provide useful symbols for use throughout the user experience, a set of icons has been created that Sloan says sit somewhere between functional wayfinding and more nuanced pictograms, allowing for “greater range of expression at a slightly larger scale”.

Starting with Tripadvisor’s original brand colour of green, a new palette has been developed too, the green given “a bit of brightening” and other accents such as Orchid, Salmon, Sand and Mustard contributing to a “fresher, more optimistic look overall”. The full rebrand will be rolled out over the coming year.

Top 10 Online Travel Website Logos

Sidestep.com.

SideStep Logo

SideStep is a meta search engine for travel: it searches and consolidates results from more than 200 travel websites. The site searches more than 150,000 hotels and 600 airlines in the United States and worldwide. The logo is slightly mysterious in the sense that it is made up a spherical icon with an upwards pointed arrow mark and an orange spot on the lower corner of the sphere. I can perhaps understand the upwards arrow to indicate travel, progress etc. But the orange spot eludes me. Perhaps it indicates either the origin or the destination of the traveler or the tourist.

Kayak.com Logo

Kayak.com is a travel search engine website based in the United States. Founded in 2004, it aggregates information from hundreds of other travel sites and helps users book flights, hotels, cruises, and rental cars. The logo shown here is a relatively new logo for Kayak.com. Previously it used to be an eye like shape (also similar to the outline of a kayak). This current logo looks more like airlines arrivals and destinations shown on the Arrivals/Departures board in airports.

LastMinuteTravel.com

LastMinuteTravel Logo

LastMinuteTravel is a premier online website for providing last minute prices on a variety of travel products from its portfolio of 15,000 plus Undercover hotels in 1,500 major cities worldwide. The logo looks like it was put together in a hurry at the last minute (pun intended). It has a “clip art like logo” of a clock and an old fashioned (circa 2000) style of gradient and Photoshop drop shadow for its name.

Expedia.com

Expedia.com Logo

Expedia is an Internet-based travel agency and a part of Expedia, Inc. based in the US with localized sites for 15 countries. It books airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages, and various attractions and services via the World Wide Web and telephone travel agents. Even though I am not too impressed by their offers, prices or service, I do like the logo. The Expedia.com logo is a web 2.0 style logo showing a glassy sphere representing the Earth and an (albeit clip art looking) icon of a plane swooping across the Earth. The plane has swoosh marks to give some movement to the logo and make it look dynamic.

Travel.com Logo

TRAVEL.com claims to bring together in one place a lot of the top booking engines worldwide, companies that wish to compete head-to-head for your business, providing the greatest array of travel products available. Yet again a very disappointing online travel logo with a sphere to represent the Earth and a couple of planetary ring like swooshes encircling the globe. This logo reminds me very much of the logos from around 1990. The worst part of the company name. From what I see on their website, the font used for the name is so common, it makes me feel sick.

Travelocity.com

Travelocity.com Logo

Travelocity is a leading provider of consumer-direct travel services for the leisure and business traveler. It markets and distributes travel-related products and services directly to individuals through Travelocity and its various brand Web sites and contact centers, and Web sites owned by its supplier and distribution partners. I do not get this logo. Paris-based Desgrippes Gobe, Travelocity’s branding agency, dubs the stars as the “guiding stars” and says that stars are the traveler’s natural compass.

HotWire.com

HotWire.com Logo

Hotwire is a discount travel website that offers low prices on airfare, hotel, rental cars, and vacation packages by selling off unsold travel inventory at a discounted price. The logo shows the name HotWire in a simple and common font with an icon inside the “O” depicting a small icon of an airplane on the red background.

Tripadvisor.com

Tripadvisor.com Logo

TripAdvisor.com is a free travel guide and research website that assists customers in gathering travel information, posting opinions of travel related issues and engaging in interactive travel forums. I am a big fan of this site and have myself contributed a few photos of the places I had visited. The logo shows an icon of an owl like image with just the eyes and the beak. The eyes also look like binoculars and the owl represents knowledge, since the site reviews places and more.

eBookers.com

eBookers.com Logo

ebookers.com is an online travel company based out of the UK and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Travelport, the former travel arm of Cendant which was bought in October 2006 by an affiliate of Blackstone Partners. The logo shown here is an older version of the eBookers.com logo. The new one is actually not a logo (in the traditional sense and is just a common font of the company name). The older logo shows the name eBookers.com with the two “o”s joining together and forming the base of a thought bubble. I am not sure what the intention behind that was and perhaps that is why it has been replaced.

FlyCheapo.com

FlyCheapo.com Logo

Don’t be put off by the name. This is a great website for learning about 45 low-fare carriers in Europe. However, FlyCheapo only shows you who flies where; for prices and schedules, you’ll have to visit the airlines’ own sites. The FlyCheapo.com logo is nothing to get excited about. It has the icon of airplane (at least partial visibility of the front and the back wings) which is cut off at the wing level to resemble a shark fin like image popping out of the water. The thin font used for the brand name does not help either.

Elements of Successful Online Travel Website Logos

If you have a travel related business, you need a travel logo that draws customers in. You are not just selling plane tickets or hotel rooms; you are selling a fantasy of faraway places and relaxing moments with loved ones. Because most travel companies are selling this mixture of escape and relaxation, there are a few common themes you will see in a online travel website logo and other media related to this industry. Bold Text One common theme you will see in online travel website logo design is bold, highly legible text. Many companies also use all capital letters. This makes the name easier to read, even from a distance, and also makes it seem more authoritative. People want their travel company to be in charge, so an online travel website logo that expresses this attitude will be more successful.

Abstract Graphics Graphic designers have to be very careful using globes, compasses, airplanes, and other travel related objects in their online travel website logo and ad design. These icons have been used to the point of overuse. The only way one of these objects can make an effective logo is if it is somehow changed to appear new and fresh again. Because that can be difficult to do, many travel companies have turned to logos that are entirely abstract. This makes the company seem more cutting edge and avoids being too obvious. However, with the right infusion of originality, a travel object can certainly replace the abstract graphics that have taken over the field of online travel website logo .

Location-Specific Color Scheme The color scheme of a online travel website logo will usually reflect the location being advertised. If you have a travel agency specializing in tropical vacations, the color palate will be bold and splashy. If the company focuses on Asian travel, colors such as red and gold are a more obvious choice. Blue and green are both relaxing colors for a company that offers less exotic vacations or one that covers many different locales. There is no set color choice for a online travel website logo , so you and your designer are free to choose the one that suits you and your destination the best.

Unusual Design There are a lot of travel options, so a company that wants to be successful must work to set itself apart from the competition. For this reason, travel brochures and ads tend to be the most innovative and unusual in the world of graphic design. Unique brochure design and eye-catching ad design dominate the field.

A Word of Warning Because the average travel logo tends to follow this set of rules, it is easy for a logo to be so unremarkable that it fades out of notice. However, a logo like this is worse than no logo at all. A travel logo that is boring or clichéd will not make customers want to trust their hard earned vacation time to your company. It will not build the brand recognition that your company needs to compete in an era when anyone can make reservations themselves on the internet. A online travel website logo is not just a pretty picture for your signs. Rather, it is a representation of your company and the type of services you offer. An original online travel website logo , a winning ad design and a unique brochure design are all selling more than a trip; they are selling a fantasy.

History of Omsk Oblast

Ancient people began to settle in the area of the middle reaches of the Irtysh River about 45,000 years ago. This region became the place of numerous migrations of different peoples, of interpenetration of forest and steppe cultures. In the Middle Ages, the territory of the present Omsk region was part of the Western Turkic Khanate and the Siberian Khanate. As a result, an ethnic group of the Siberian Tatars was formed. This region was also inhabited by Kazakhs and other peoples.

The history of the development of the Irtysh by Russians is connected first of all with the legendary Yermak. Although even before him, in the 15th century, Russian merchants from the Urals visited the Siberian Khanate.

In the early 18th century, major reforms carried out by Peter the Great required large expenses. The first Russian emperor turned his attention to the east. He sent a detachment of Cossacks under the command of the lieutenant-colonel I.D.Bukhgolts from the town of Tobolsk up the Irtysh River in search of gold deposits.

More Historical Facts…

The expedition failed because of resistance from the nomads Dzhungars. Russians were forced to take a step back. In 1716, they founded a fortress at the mouth of the Om River - future Omsk. Russian peasants began to settle in the land around the fortress. To the south of Omsk, a line of outposts was constructed for protection from the nomads.

In 1782, the fortress became a town. Omsk district was formed on the basis of the southern part of Tarsky district and, in 1785, the town of Omsk was given a coat of arms. Omsk became an important center for the study of Siberia and Central Asia. This region like other parts of Siberia was used as a place for political exile.

In the 19th century, the people exiled to Siberia were the Decembrists, Petrashevts, Narodniki, representatives of other revolutionary parties and organizations, participants of the Polish national movement. These people had a major cultural impact on the local population. The great Russian writer F.M.Dostoyevsky was one of the prisoners of the Omsk jail.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Siberia experienced significant changes. Large-scale migration of peasants led to the rapid growth of the local economy, especially agriculture. Due to its favorable economic and geographical location, at the intersection of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Irtysh River, Omsk rapidly turned into a large transport, trade and industrial center of Western Siberia, the largest city in Siberia.

During the Second World War, about 100 industrial plants were evacuated from the European part of the USSR to Omsk. They became the basis of the local engineering industry. In 1949, the first refinery in Siberia was constructed in Omsk. In 1954-1956, during development of virgin lands, several large agricultural enterprises were built in the southern part of Omsk Oblast. In the 1970s, Omsk oblast became one of the most economically developed regions of Siberia.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

travel logo owl

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

travel logo owl

Milhail Vrubel's painting 'Demon Seated in a Garden' (1890)

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
