Top 5 airlines serving from Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl to Vancouver Intl

Delay was not properly communicated. Service, plane, value of ticker were all great.

Excellent service and food in the Club Class. Warmly recommend. Much better than AC.

My new suitcase got busted when I arrived at Toronto , two of the wheels are broken and can no longer be used , I am very disappointed over this situation but the flight and service was awesome .

From what I saw there was no entertainment. Similar to my flight to London, I personally would like the attendants to be more interactive during the flight.

Air Transat left my luggage back in Montreal and it took them 5 DAYS to get it to Venice. Luckily I was still in town, or else their option was to send my luggage back to my house in CANADA. What a joke! Oh, and I had to find a way to go get it at the airport in Venice, they needed 72 hours more to get it to where I was staying.

I was pleasantly surprised. I booked the "club class" which was basically like Domestic First Class. The service was superior. Food was pretty good. Seats and cabin were comfortable. For the price I paid, I was very pleased.

Super unproffesional flight . Flight attendants were unproffesional. I could hear them gossiping about theor boyfriends the whole trip

The connecting flight lay over was 4.00 hours, the gate agent booked me on the next flight which was about to depart at no extra cost.

The ticket price was reasonable, food was okay, not the best. I would use the service again.

Actually the flight was on time. New plane, food was okay but not great.

Only packaged snacks were served. It was a flight at lunchtime and a hot meal would have been a great.

Reserve check-in was very slow compared to regular check-in. Internet was slow

Lavatories broke with an hour to go. At least we were on time.

Chaotic boarding, but mostly my issues are with Toronto airport

Flight delayed by half hour, causing rush to get to connecting flight in Toronto Pearson which doesn’t have good flow for managing immigration check and connections.

Service was amazing, and the plane was comfortable even for this long haul. But they could have more movies selections. But they were still a lot to choose from.

Due to mechanical problems it was delayed causing problems the actual flight. Was fune

Wish we had music during take off and landing like the last flight

First time with Porter and I can say this is best airline company in Canada. Great service, free WiFi, free snack and drinks (including beer and wine). Seats were super comfy on the Embraer jet and I appreciated the folding try table too. Staff were excellent both legs of the trip.

Crew is ok. They offered food n drinks. Had difficulty connecting to wifi on board.

I paid Premium class. Given that it’s double the cost, my expectations are higher. I left the flight beyond hungry because they would not give me another dinner, though I know there were several left as we do not pre-order between the two entrees. After this flight I decided the extra cost isn’t worth it.

If I wanted to leave on a Monday I would have booked to leave on Monday. Instead, thanks the west jet i spent another night in a hotel on my dime because they don’t even have a number you can call that works. It’s just says due to the high call volume we can’t take your call, that’s it. Our a Canadian airline industry needs an overhaul.

Let people know if carry on is free when you are checking luggage

Your questions don’t quite make sense. There was no food service as far as I know. Short 2 hour flight. Nice crew. On time. Older plane that looks to be ready for a tuneup. Sagging, stretched pockets etc. No entertainment system, screens etc, which makes sense on a short flight. Seat etc at the low end of the comfort zone which I’m sure you already know. Totally okay for a short flight. Sure would not to take a longer flight in the plane though.

Only 2 bathrooms at rear of plane for about 30 rows of passengers. Ridiculous! Long lines passengers alway waiting. On long trip a full can of beverage rather than a little cup would be appreciated and expected.

Delayed by 4 hours. Missed connection back to UK. Ended up 24 hours late with an overnight delay. Westjet offered hotel accommodation but when we got to the hotel they said it was fully booked. Terrible experience

Over an hour late. Lousy flight attendant who was just going through the motions in every aspect of her job. The Dash 8 aircraft is super basic (no entertainment system, small seats, limited storage). Carry on luggage doesn’t fit in overhead bins.

Did not realize this was a super budget airline - we even had to pay for a carry on!

All was good except that the option to purchase wifi for texting throughout the flight didn't work. My partner and I both tried via the app, Chrome and Safari, we tried all payment options. Nothing worked. He was able to get ok blonde with he full coverage option, but it's nice to what we wanted or needed.

Travelled with my mother in law and made sure she has wheelchair access. Very efficient travel. There was always someone waiting for her when she got off the plane

The plane for my second flight was reassigned. We had to wait for them to get a different plane out of the hangar and call in a crew

How slow the security process was and the fact that I had to do it twice - once in Victoria and again in Vancouver - even tho I didn't leave the airport

the flight was an hour late, which made us miss our connection to sacramento. we are having to spend the night in the vancouver airport and fly to san francisco instead. air canada says that since the late flight was caused by air traffic control and not a mechanical issue they won't pay for a hotel, so two senior citizens are going to have to sleep in the food court at vancouver airport tonight. NOT HAPPY!

Not happened yet. Still waiting in the long checking queue at 5:30 am as my flight yesterday was cancelled.

Pros: Convenient flight to Sydney Cons: Paying for headphones, paying to reserve a seat

Flight was cancelled 2 hours before we needed to leave. Spent 1.5 hours on hold trying to speak to an agent. Was given the option of travelling to Montreal and flying out of that airport rather than adding a full extra day to the trip. In flight entertainment did not work during the Montreal flight. "Snack" consisted of a single cookie. I would rather not book with Air Canada in the future. It's frustrating to not have choices as a consumer.

AC wouldnt allow the economy Passengers to select seats FREE of Charge during Check-in. I like the past years AC flights's system better than the passengers'New Check-in system(charge money apply for seats changes) nowadays.

The entreteiner was really old,no food for 6 hours fly

Boarding was late, but we still made it earlier than scheduled. I still can't understand how a national carrier doesn't offer food or snacks on flights and charge you for them. It's a national carrier of Canada, not some low-cost airline; this shouldn't happen. Friendly crew.

My flight from Montreal to Vancouver was fine, but on the flight from Vancouver to Seattle, the attendants forced me and my friend to check our small carry-on bags at the gate when others were able to carry on much larger bags. Then, when we arrived in Seattle, our bags didn't end up in baggage claim for over an hour and a half. The Air Canada baggage office was closed and locked, so eventually, after checking all the baggage claim carousels, we went to the Air Canada ticketing office...where they told us bags were just being dropped now. The almost-two-hour delay was absolutely unacceptable.

The flight was canceled. We only found out at the airport. We had to book another flight which cost us more then the whole trip booked through Kayak. Lynx took our email and was supposed to write us with an alternate flight. We never received an email. They talked about reimbursement which was to be explained in the email (which we never received).

The online system for Lynx air to pay for additional baggage is not satisfactory. I was charged 100+$ for my suitcase when I tried to explain that the online payment was not functional using the app and showed screenshots of the same. In the end I gave up and paid and went ahead.

No snacks, just water.... could have been better. The actual flight was good.

Flight delayed by 4 hours but no communication. With passengers until after the posted departure time became apparent the flight was not going to board even close to on time.

Flight was sent canceled. The absolute most useless staff I have ever witnessed. Utterly careless - literally could not care less. 100% never using this airline again.

Poor communication at the check in counter and boarding gates.

Other then the screaming baby the flight was fine, nothing special

Check in experience was smooth, and the flight attendants were courteous and friendly. Very positive experience overall, thank you all!

Flight arrived late but other than that everything else okay

Great price for a new plane. Only offered water which we knew.

Top 5 airlines serving from Vancouver to Montreal

West jet once again canceled the flight delaying my travel this is inexcusable they are not capable of running an airline

Needs to be clearer about baggage allowances upon purchasing tickets

We booked a ticket with Budget Air and the receipt said economy. My older teen daughter is neurodivergent and took a carry on bag since the ticket said economy, but she didn't see that it said no bags on her boarding pass. She has low attention. She managed to fly from Prince George to Calgary. At Calgary, she was preparing to board her last flight and the women said you can't get on. She said you can't board unless you pay for those bags. She had a small backpack, purse and carry on suitcase. She said you have to pay $160 +. My daughter has trouble understanding. She said can you step out of line to think about what you want to do. Then she said we have to leave you'll have to catch another flight. She called me in tears. I asked her to pass the phone to the agent. She said the agent was refusing to take the phone and ignoring her. I finally calmed her down enough to politely ask the woman to take my credit card. I told the woman of my daughter's challenges and need for extra helps. All she did was lecture me on how we booked ultra basic and we should have checked. She took my number and charged my card. Then I heard her push the phone back to my daughter and tell her to get on. My poor daughter was scared and confused and had to fly in tears. No apologies.

WestJet cancelled our flight back with very little notice. The options presented were poor...two other flights were offered but required overnight travel. We couldn't do that as my wife had to be at work on Thursday, the 15th, so we were able to book flights on United that got us home so that she could go to work. I am attempting to get a refund on the unused WestJet flights back from Vancouver. If you have any thoughts on how I can pursue this refund, I would appreciate it. We found that WestJet has a very bad reputation and I guess they proved it....

Flight was 1.5 hours late because the groceries for the flight did not arrive on time. Plane was new but basic low end seats. Very basic airline

Flight left on time. In flight entertainment options were good, but needed own device. Crew were polite.

West jet have lost my hold luggage and still haven’t contacted me.

Great assistance checking in & getting boarding pass in Vancouver. Flight delayed leaving MSP due to waiting to get 2 flight attendants.

Nothing could be better it was perfect!! Except for really bad turbulence going to Calgary from comox

Delayed by 4 hours. Missed connection back to UK. Ended up 24 hours late with an overnight delay. Westjet offered hotel accommodation but when we got to the hotel they said it was fully booked. Terrible experience

I have not flown a major airline in over 10 years. All 3 flight with Rouge were late leaving and arriving due to various issues. I was worried my suitcase would get lost because I checked it 3 hours prior to flight. The flight was over an hour boarding and leaving and they lost my suitcase in Montreal. Lined up for over an hour at YVR for baggage location and the line never moved. Had to phone it in and that took forever. I should have been gome by 1am and was not back until 5am. I had been up 23 hours. Bag was not delivered until two days later. Could not hear a word the stewardesses said over the engine noise. At Jean Lesage 2 Rouge flights were cancelled, 2 delayed, and 2 on time: not good stats. Terrible experience. Oh yes, and in the case lost were my mother's ashes. She passed in May and I was unable to attend her funeral as I have a disbled 22 year old who cannot fly. I was in Quebec to meet my birth family for the first time at my grandmother's 100th birthday. I spoke with and wrote my mother for the last 8 years. We have never met. It would have made a damning story for Air Canada on the news if that bag had not been found and returned.

Worst trip ever. We had a 3 hours delay due to mechanical issues on the plan

No vegan/ vegetarian breakfast (eggs and cheese are not a vegetable)

My flight from Quebec City to Montreal only had a 1 hour layover to catch my flight to Denver. We boarded the plane in Quebec City and sat on the tarmac for approximately 15 minutes and was told the Montreal airport did not open until 7:00AM - then why was the flight scheduled so early? Upon arriving in Montreal, there was a long security line, and my stress was compounded by being "chosen by the airlines" to have a detailed search further delaying my entry into Montreal. I had to literally run about 1-1/2 blocks in my stocking feet because I didn't have time to put my shoes back on to get to the gate while they are calling my name on the the loud speaker. I'm 67 years old and able to run but imagine many are not! I was disappointed in the petty charges for luggage and seat choice. Lastly, the communication fom Air Canada was disappointing as well, however I received loads of advertisements! Most likely I will not choose Air Canada again.

It was swiss air flight and they were very helpful and kind

My flight cancelled 3 time and rebooked. It was unexpected for me. Otherwise everything is perfect.

Excellent. Wonderful agents from check-in through the end of my flight. I’ll definitely fly them again.

No entertainment - although it was a small plane, short flight. Had to check my small carry on bag which was inconvenient - I DID like that I got text messages as it moved through the cycle of pick up and dispensation at the baggage claim area. It gave me piece of mind to know it was moving along. I've had too many experiences of lost luggage (not with Air Canada) that I always travel light and with a carryon when possible.

The plane was boarding at gate 50 and there was a flight to Toronto at gate 52 making the boarding are chaotic and busy.

Very poor. Flight was cancelled last minute to deploy the plane for another route

At over 4,500-kilometres, a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver takes around 48 hours. Key stops can include Lake Michigan, Seattle, Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, Chicago; or Manitoba, Kamloops, Rocky Mountains or Banff if you choose the Canadian Route.

There are so many places to visit on this trip between two of the largest oceans. Read on to discover the options you have available for this incredible journey.

How far is Vancouver from Montreal and how long will the road trip take?

The road trip from Montreal to Vancouver spans a minimum distance of 4,560 km (2,833 miles) and takes at least 48 hours to complete. That's if you were to drive nonstop along the route, without accounting for any stops along the way.

On a trip of this magnitude you will need at least 5 days to cover the distance. But with so many great stops along the way, including stunning wilderness to take in, you should really consider spending up to two weeks to complete the journey.

There are two obvious routes to take, one which largely remains in Canada, while the other cuts through the US. It's important to note that both cross the border and will require documents to prove your identity and visa (if necessary). A passport is usually recommended.

Best road trip route from Montreal to Vancouver

There are two great routes to take for a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver. The Canadian Route is slightly more direct and cuts straight across southern Canada and through its six largest, most populated provinces.

Our American Route is 420 miles longer but takes in some of America's most interesting states and gives you the opportunity to explore Seattle, Lake Michigan and Chicago. Both routes have impossibly beautiful views so choose the best one depending on your preference of stops.

How to drive from Montreal to Vancouver

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Montreal and Vancouver. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The American Route

The American Route will take you through the northern part of the United States. Begin by heading west on Highway 401 and through Kingston, a beautiful city on Lake Ontario.

Follow this road through Toronto and consider a stop at the capital of Ontario, before crossing the Ambassador Bridge into Detroit, on the American side of the border. From here you can explore Lake Erie as well as the city itself.

Next take Interstate 96 a short distance until it meets I-94 and follow this west, to Gary, Indiana, near the Illinois border on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Continue heading west on I-94 through Madison before arriving at Minneapolis. Consider taking a detour to explore Lake Traverse Reservation or Leech Lake Reservation.

Still heading west on I-94, you will pass several towns in North Dakota before reaching Montana. A worthy detour here would be to visit the stunning Yellowstone National Park and cities such as Missoula.

At Billings, take Interstate 90 west and continue on this road for the rest of the trip as you drive through some majestic scenery alongside New Perce Reservation and Kootenai National Forest.

When you arrive at Seattle, change to the I-5 north and follow it all the way to the Canadian border. Once in Canada the road becomes Highway 99, and you can follow this the remainder of the journey, to your destination in Vancouver.

Vancouver skyline, British Columbia, Canada at sunset with boats in the harbor and mountains in the far distance.

The Canadian Route

Our alternative route remains almost entirely in Canada. In fact, if you don't wish to cross into the US for some of the attractions along the border, this route never leaves the country.

Begin by heading north on Quebec Autoroute 20 and follow it to Sainte-Agathe-Des-Monts, where it merges with Route 117. You'll follow this to the Ontario border, before a very brief stint on the Trans-Canada Highway brings us to Highway 11.

Consider a stop to explore La Verendrye Wildlife Reserve for its lakes and beautiful walks, before continuing west to the town of Emo, on the US-Canadian border. Parts of the road will be labelled as Highway 17 and Trans-Canada Highway, as they follow the same route in places.

From here take Trans-Canada Highway north to Longbow Lake and then switch to Highway 17 heading west.

Once you pass into Manitoba, the road becomes Trans-Canada Highway 1, which you'll follow the entire way across both Manitoba and driving through Edmonton and Alberta - both of which would make fantastic stops.

Continue on Ab-16 and take in the sights of the stunning Jasper National Park Of Canada before arriving at Kamloops, in British Columbia.

All that's left now is to take Highway 5 south, until it re-joins Trans-Canada Highway 1, and continue following that south all the way to Vancouver.

Best places to stop between Montreal and Vancouver

With two very different routes to choose from for your road trip from Montreal to Vancouver, you're going to have to choose plenty of great places to stay along the way, to both break up the trip and give you plenty of time to see the sights.

With almost 10,000 kilometres of country between the two routes, it's impossible to point out everywhere worth staying and, quite frankly, discovering things on your own is often part of the fun on a road trip.

That said, here's a couple of our favourite locations and hotels, so be sure to make a longer stop at one of each of these:

American Route - Rapid City

Rapid City itself, while beautiful, is likely a location many people will be unfamiliar with, as it isn't exactly a famous city. However, some of the attractions in the surrounding area are considerably more well known.

Mount Rushmore, USA with the faces of former US presidents carved into the Black Hills, trees in the foreground on a sunny day.

Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Deadwood, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Wind Cave National Park are just a few of the famous locations located less than an hours drive from the city.

There are very few places in the entire country with so many famous, historic attractions in such close proximity, which is why this is an absolutely perfect place to have one of your longer stops along the route. It's also over halfway through your route, so ideally placed to rest.

Given the cities location to so many fantastic attractions, there's a great choice of nearby hotels. For convenience, comfort and style, a top choice would have to the Cambria Hotel Rapid City. As well as having the all-important indoor swimming pool, a must on a long road trip, the hotel is stylish, rooms for comfortable and generous and there are wonderful views from the restaurant and poolside.

Located just a short drive from South Dakota attractions, this beautiful hotel is the perfect stop for exploring and relaxing in equal measures.

Canadian Route - Banff

Some 950km from your destination on the Canadian Route and an ideal stop before arriving at Vancouver, Banff is a fantastic overnight stop.

Its growing reputation as one of the premier beauty spots in the entire world, located high up in the Rocky Mountains at about 90-minutes west of Calgary, Banff is home to some of the most picturesque views around.

Banff, Canada with a view of a busy street at winter with the mountain in the distance covered in snow on a sunny day.

From here you are spoilt with glorious surroundings - take a scenic walk through the stunning forests or enjoy a hot drink in one of the many beautiful lodges. Then, for the more thrill-seeking among you, there are world famous ski slopes or locations to go boating on its collection of gorgeous lakes.

However you want to experience it, if you're a fan of scenic, naturally beautiful locations, Banff is an absolute must visit location. For an equally breathtaking experience, we highly recommend a stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs.

Luxurious and historic, the Fairmont Banff Springs is a stunning hotel that offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The building, which is like a beautiful castle, has so much on offer. Indulge at the hotel's beautiful indoor pool or enjoy the spa facilities, before relaxing by the fire at its onsite restaurant and bar. You can also enjoy 360-degree views of Banff National Park and Canada's Castle in the Rockies. Wow.

Best time to go on a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver

Considering a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver takes two full days of non-stop driving, no matter which of the routes you select, you need to make sure that conditions are perfect so you can see and do everything you plan, both along the route as well as at your destination.

Considering the part of the world you will be travelling through and to, and that the majority of our attractions are outdoors, it leaves us with a relatively small window to work with, in order to ensure temperatures and weather conditions ideal.

We'd strongly recommend making this journey in either July or August when temperatures are around 65 Degrees Fahrenheit and rarely exceed 80, giving you the best weather at our destination of Vancouver as well as throughout the journey.

A trip during July would also give you the opportunity to arrive at our destination in time to experience the thrill of Vancouver's Honda Celebration of Light - a three-day festival showcasing incredible fireworks over the English Bay. There's also an International Jazz Festival held in the city for 12 days in late June and July - just plan ahead and book in advance as the city will get extremely busy during these months.

Coco Gauff begins her US Open title defense with an easy win after a two-match losing streak

NEW YORK (AP) — The chant rang out in cavernous Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday at the U.S. Open before Coco Gauff's first service game of her first match of her first Grand Slam tournament as a defending champion : “Here we go, Coco! Here we go!”

Coming to Flushing Meadows off a series of early exits at other events, Gauff already was down 1-0 to Varvara Gracheva, having dropped the match's initial game at love by making four groundstroke errors. What followed was a tough, tight game, featuring 14 points across eight minutes and three break chances for Gracheva.

The important part, of course, was that Gauff saved all of those break points, claimed that game, and suddenly was in complete control on the way to a 6-2, 6-0 victory that not only put the 20-year-old American in the second round but also told her — and everyone else — that her game is in better shape than it appeared lately.

“The last couple of weeks were tough, and I was like, ‘I have to do this and do that, but I don’t have to prove anything to anyone except myself.’ So ... (these) two weeks are just about proving all the expectations that I have on myself,” the No. 3-seeded Gauff said. “I have many more years coming back here and I'm not going to win every year. Just that perspective and just having the belief that I can — but not the expectation that I should.”

Day 1 at the year's last Grand Slam tournament went about as well as possible for Gauff and another young American featured in Ashe, 13th-seeded Ben Shelton, a semifinalist a year ago who beat 2020 champion Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 . It was the last U.S. Open match for Thiem, who turns 31 next week and is retiring after this season.

“Obviously she plays with a lot of passion,” Shelton, 21, said about Gauff. “You could tell that she cares out there. She’s into it every time that she’s on the court. I think that’s something that the people love.”

Gauff was not the only past U.S. Open champ on Monday's schedule: The night session in Ashe began with 2017 winner Sloane Stephens blowing a huge lead against Clara Burel and losing 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 after taking the first nine games, followed by Novak Djokovic — whose collection of 24 Slam titles includes last year's in New York — getting past Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 .

Seeded women's winners included No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, the two-time Australian Open champion who was the runner-up to Gauff a year ago in New York; No. 7 Zheng Qinwen, the women's gold medalist at the Paris Olympics earlier this month; No. 24 Donna Vekic, the silver medalist; No. 12 Daria Kasatkina; and No. 14 Madison Keys.

No. 9 Maria Sakkari stopped playing after one set because of an injured right shoulder. The highest-seeded man out of the bracket during the day session was No. 15 Holger Rune, who was eliminated by Brandon Nakashima of the U.S. 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

Among the men's seeds advancing were No. 4 Alexander Zverev, the runner-up to Thiem four years ago; No. 6 Andrey Rublev; No. 8 Casper Ruud, the 2022 runner-up at Flushing Meadows; No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov; and No. 12 Taylor Fritz.

Zheng is enjoying a breakthrough season that began with a run to the final at the Australian Open in January and reached a peak when she claimed China's first Summer Games singles gold. Monday was difficult at the outset against 2019 French Open semifinalist Amanda Anisimova, but Zheng eventually came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

“Everything starts at zero. You are not anymore the Olympic champion,” Zheng said. “Just be humble and try to work, fight every single match, because if you don’t fight, you have a big chance to lose.”

That mirrors Gauff's approach as she returns to the site of her greatest triumph so far.

If she was trying to start from scratch after early exits in three events at the Paris Games — not that she wants to forget about that trip to France; Gauff wore a necklace with the Olympic rings during Monday's match — followed by a two-match skid on North American hard courts, Gauff did a good job of it.

This wasn't surprising to Gauff. Not at all. She knew she didn't play great in Toronto or Cincinnati in recent weeks. But she also could tell she was hitting balls well in practice.

“Usually that first round for me can sometimes set the tone for a tournament, whether you’re playing well or not. ... I had a good mentality. Is this going to say I’m going to play great the next couple matches? Yes or no,” Gauff said. “But I think the mentality I have going into this week will be there, and hopefully the execution stays there.”

She only needed 66 minutes to win Monday, using some of her 10 aces to help erase all eight break points Gracheva accumulated, and compiling a 16-5 edge in winners.

“From the start, we kind of all knew that Coco was going to be an amazing player, and she’s incredibly mature and carries herself in a way that I wish that I carried myself when I was her age,” said Keys, 29, who lost to Stephens in the U.S. Open final seven years ago. “It's also very impressive how she’s been able ... through all of the pressure and all of the expectation that’s been put on her, continue to do as well as she has.”

Frugal Traveler

From Nova Scotia to Montreal: Driving Solo (and on a Budget) in a ‘Relocation’ R.V. Rental

When rental companies need to move their vehicles, they frequently offer one-way trips at a steep discount. Our Frugal Traveler snapped up a deal that took her through eastern Canada.

A vividly colored illustration shows an R.V. camper van parked in a clearing next to some orange and yellow rock formations. In the foreground are two Canada geese with black necks and heads and white throats. The sky is hot pink and in the background are silhouettes of trees and a pink and orange sky, with the sun just setting into an aqua sea.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

Quebec City was designed to be imposing. On a steep hill above the St. Lawrence Seaway, behind 17th-century ramparts, the city’s streets are narrow and cobbled — no place for a road-hogging, 21st-century recreational vehicle.

Or so I thought, as I planned an ambitious solo R.V. road trip across eastern Canada — from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Montreal — that would take me through one of the oldest European cities in North America.

Colonial streets weren’t my only mental roadblock when I set out in May to take advantage of a six-night “relocation” deal on an R.V. rental for 39 Canadian dollars a night (about $28) from the Canadian company CanaDream ; its trips normally start at 136 dollars nightly.

When R.V. companies need to move their vehicles to satisfy seasonal demand, they frequently offer relocation or one-way trips at discounted prices. The R.V. rental company Cruise America calls them “one way specials,” which recently included 75 percent off a trip in July from Las Vegas to Orlando. One-way sales from El Monte RV recently listed departures from 30 to 90 percent off.

Based in Calgary, CanaDream shuffles its fleet among seven locations across Canada. With relocation itineraries, the company stipulates the vehicle and departure and arrival dates. Renters pay for gas, food and campsite access in addition to the discounted vehicle.

Travel by R.V. took off during the pandemic as North Americans discovered the convenience and privacy of taking a home on the road. As someone who makes a living traveling light, I considered that style of travel freighted, sluggish and spontaneity-sapping.

What I got over six nights and nearly 800 miles on my maiden R.V. journey was an adventure in driving, a test of self-sufficiency and an introduction to slow-lane travel.

Driver’s ed

Before setting foot in Halifax, I had watched a video about my vehicle — the 22-foot-long Deluxe Van Camper — introducing the many indicators that monitor electricity, waste and water. My sense of responsibility only grew when I got the keys and set out on my journey.

While small for an R.V., the two-person Deluxe Van Camper was taller, longer and less nimble than camper vans I’d driven in the past, which you might expect from a vehicle that you can comfortably stand upright in (its interior height was 6 feet, 3 inches).

The apartment on wheels contained a bathroom with a hose extension on the faucet that doubled as a shower head; a galley kitchen with a microwave, stove and small refrigerator; and a sofa in the back that converted into a firm queen bed. Storage areas, cabinets and drawers contained removable window shades and amenities that seemed essential to me — namely bedding, towels and kitchenware, which cost 175 dollars. A roof hatch and ceiling fan kept air circulating overnight.

Setting out after stops for food and drinking water (the water on board is not potable), I was immediately met by what I came to consider the “R.V. Symphony,” a soundtrack of clattering dishes and tinkling utensils punctuated by the squeak of wood cabinets.

Aware of the extra space needed to brake in an R.V., I drove like an A student fresh out of driver’s training, distant from vehicles ahead, going under the speed limit and, when it was time to park, picking remote, traffic-free spots.

Though I would become more comfortable driving with each passing day, my pace was deliberate as I stuck by my instinct to never drive more than 90 minutes straight. Sightseeing breaks relieved the concentration required of driving.

Tidal adventures

Over the first two days, I skirted the Bay of Fundy, where the highest tides in the world vary up to 53 feet. A few hours from Halifax, I followed the signs to Joggins Fossil Cliffs (free), a UNESCO World Heritage Site where tides have exposed the fossil remains of a 300-million-year-old forest along cliffs roughly 100 feet high.

Crossing into New Brunswick, I continued along the north shore of the bay to a campsite at Ponderosa Pines Campground (70 dollars). It neighbors Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park , one of the province’s biggest attractions, with its tide-carved sea stacks.

My quiet lakeside campsite, like all the R.V. parks I visited, included power and water hookups, a fire ring and picnic table.

In the morning, awakened by honking Canada geese, I took a mile-long forest trail from the campground to Hopewell Rocks (admission 15.85 dollars).

High tide peaked just before the park opened at 9 a.m., surrounding the park’s more than 20 free-standing sea stacks — monoliths that had eroded from the mainland cliffs — in water. As the tide rapidly receded, a park interpreter pointed out the resemblance of the rock profiles to humans.

“There are a lot of native legends of people turned to stone,” he said, echoing the Indigenous Mi’kmaq legend in which an angry whale transforms runaway slaves into rock.

From Hopewell Rocks, a rural half-hour drive passed barns and fields in route to shoreside Alma just outside of Fundy National Park . Tiny Alma has a string of restaurants near its working marina. At Alma Lobster Shop , I savored a briny lobster roll and seafood chowder combo (29 dollars) from a bayside picnic table near sun-bleached whale bones.

With about three hours to visit Fundy National Park (admission 9 dollars), I stopped at the ranger station for advice on a speed tour. The staff seemed accustomed to the question, sending me first to Dickson Falls Trail to hike a nearly mile-long loop through a lush, fern-filled gully split by the stone-carving cascade. Farther down the shore, I followed the pine-shaded Shiphaven Trail along an estuary where shipwrights once built schooners on a gravel bar.

Back in the R.V., I settled in for a two-hour drive — punctuated by a few bird-watching stops — to my next campsite in the provincial capital of Fredericton . On the St. John River, Hartt Island R.V. Resort was quiet in spring, its water park still awaiting warmer weather (60 dollars). Several riverside sites away, my closest neighbors were a pair of backpacking cyclists from England.

I stoked a campfire with dried leaves and watched diving ospreys, soaring eagles and paddling loons as the temperatures dropped with the sunset.

Local encounters

A former British garrison, Fredericton is filled with intriguing 19th-century buildings that made me long for a ride that was a bit more agile on city streets. But I braved them the next morning to hit the city’s renowned Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market at 7 a.m. when parking was available.

The weekly Saturday event draws more than 200 vendors of everything from local produce to food-truck samosas. The best provisioning of the trip turned up aged Cheddar from neighboring Prince Edward Island (10 dollars), a loaf of sourdough (8 dollars) and spinach pies (2 dollars each) from a Lebanese vendor.

Before leaving town, I arranged to meet Cecelia Brooks and Anthony Brooks, a mother-and-son team who guide forest walks with an Indigenous point of view through their company, Wabanaki Tree Spirit Tours (60 dollars). We met at Odell Park , a 400-acre swath of old-growth forest just minutes from downtown and began by burning small amounts of sweetgrass in homage to the giant hemlocks, some of which are over 400 years old.

We meandered through the forest for more than two hours, stopping to discuss plants and fungi that were used by First Nations people as medicine or food and to sample the balsam fir tea and homemade acorn cookies that Ms. Brooks, who is Mohawk and Wolastoqiyik, toted along in a basket.

“The elders say the Creator gave us everything we need,” she said.

Quebec, plugged and unplugged

In Rivière-du-Loup , on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, a seasonal Christmas castle and its giant Santa sculpture came between my site at Camping du Quai (39 dollars) and the water.

In search of better views, I joined locals in camp chairs awaiting sunset at Parc de la Pointe , a boulder-filled beach park a 30-minute walk down the shore.

The next morning, I topped off the water tank and made the drive in a little over two hours (with a short rest break) to Quebec City and Bassin Louise RV Parking . I reached the public lot in Old Port near the city walls by skirting the traffic-knotted center of town.

Bassin Louise offers “ boondocking ,” or R.V. camping, without services like electricity and water. As a woman sleeping in her vehicle in a city, I closed the window shades for the duration. So did the occupants of dozens of R.V.s and vans around me. The lot seemed quiet, but having met the French Canadian couple in a truck camper next door, I knew that — if needed — help was a honk away (overnight parking costs 75 dollars, according to the lot’s website, but the on-site kiosk only asked for 16 dollars).

Short of spending 10 times more for a hotel within the walls, I couldn’t imagine a better location, just five minutes on foot from the tourism office where I joined a two-hour walking tour I booked through GetYourGuide ($26).

“I love my city,” said Hélène Lemieux, the guide who ushered our group of 12, most of them from the United States, among landmark buildings while relating the city’s history as of 1608 when the French explorer Samuel du Champlain arrived to set up a trading post.

The British took over after a pivotal battle in 1759 and Ms. Lemieux helped us distinguish French buildings — with small windows, rough stone facades and dormered roofs — from English ones, made with rectangular stones. She seemed to delight in leading us where other groups weren’t, including the rear of the 17th-century Quebec Seminary .

She ended the tour in a deserted alley, saying, “If you see a little passage, go inside!”

City traffic

The final frontier was getting the R.V. safely to Montreal, a roughly three-hour trip — with a break worked in — through rush hour. It was the last, stomach-churning challenge.

I didn’t miss the R.V. Symphony as I rode toward the airport in an Uber. But I missed my mobile home in the way you miss a great campsite. Taking all the conveniences of home — including a bed, bathroom and kitchen — on the road seemed indulgent. And it was; gas, which came to about $285, cost nearly as much as the vehicle, $290.

In total, the relocation offer saved more than $400 and the R.V. itself forced me to slow down, stop frequently and, possibly, see more.
