Top 5 airlines serving from Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl to Vancouver Intl

My new suitcase got busted when I arrived at Toronto , two of the wheels are broken and can no longer be used , I am very disappointed over this situation but the flight and service was awesome .

From what I saw there was no entertainment. Similar to my flight to London, I personally would like the attendants to be more interactive during the flight.

Air Transat left my luggage back in Montreal and it took them 5 DAYS to get it to Venice. Luckily I was still in town, or else their option was to send my luggage back to my house in CANADA. What a joke! Oh, and I had to find a way to go get it at the airport in Venice, they needed 72 hours more to get it to where I was staying.

I was pleasantly surprised. I booked the "club class" which was basically like Domestic First Class. The service was superior. Food was pretty good. Seats and cabin were comfortable. For the price I paid, I was very pleased.

Super unproffesional flight . Flight attendants were unproffesional. I could hear them gossiping about theor boyfriends the whole trip

The connecting flight lay over was 4.00 hours, the gate agent booked me on the next flight which was about to depart at no extra cost.

The ticket price was reasonable, food was okay, not the best. I would use the service again.

Actually the flight was on time. New plane, food was okay but not great.

Old plane, hard seats, 1.30 hours delay, while seating on the plane waiting for departure.

Great boarding. Everything was on time. Plane was a bit old and the crew could have provided better drink service.

Service was amazing, and the plane was comfortable even for this long haul. But they could have more movies selections. But they were still a lot to choose from.

Due to mechanical problems it was delayed causing problems the actual flight. Was fune

Wish we had music during take off and landing like the last flight

First time with Porter and I can say this is best airline company in Canada. Great service, free WiFi, free snack and drinks (including beer and wine). Seats were super comfy on the Embraer jet and I appreciated the folding try table too. Staff were excellent both legs of the trip.

Crew is ok. They offered food n drinks. Had difficulty connecting to wifi on board.

Tight transfer in Montreal. (15 min) However, we made it, as did my luggage.

Great. Porter is very efficient, welcoming, and organized. I fly Porter often.

Flight was smooth and comfortable. The crew were exceptional. Amanda, Nichole and Hershel were attentive to our every need. So friendly. My daughter and I were surprised at quality of service. Loved the double row seating. Snacks were delicious. We would definitely fly with Porter again. Flight PD 670 SFO to YYZ Thank you so much for the best flight experience we have had

The E195-E2 is a great aircraft! Leather seats, lots of legroom and SO quiet! The flight crew is terrific!

Check in was slow because of passenger ahead in Reserve line. Seats were somewhat uncomfortable.

Nothing. They are a perfect second hand airline for Southwest Airlines. Very tired planes.

Took 45 minutes to check into the flight as their web page keys crashing and was unbelievably show. First flight was cancelled at 10pm the night before a 6:30amd flight and I got a text saying they'd rescheduled me for *2 days later*. Given the trip was for meetings that didn't work so I spent over an hour and a half on hold and on the phone rescheduling. They tell me to check in online while on the phone. It crashes repeatedly. I can't check in. They say, "that happens, it'll probably be ok". Woke up to find the 2nd flight was delayed due to "lack of crew availability" enough that I'd miss my connection (30 minutes to change terminals, go through security and customs). Another 1.5 hours on hold and taking to support when I hear, "I think I have a solution" just before I get hung up on. Call back, another 45 minutes on hold. Previous agent had left no notes so had to start from scratch. Another hour and 45 on the phone. Only flights they could offer involved a 5 hour layover, get into LAX (not my destination) atfter 10pm, then find one of their agents to geta voucher for a hotel (they won't issue vouchers until you land), get to hotel, get about 4 hours sleep, catch a 6am flight to my destination. I gave up and cancelled. Never got to take my trip but spent well over 4 hours on their website and in the phone trying to sort out non-weather, fully in their control problems.

Flying is no fun anymore. Too little space. Too much carry on baggage slowing down everything.

Flight was delayed which caused us to miss our connection.

Our trip was booked to be 2 hours after arriving in Calgary but it was changed until the next morning forcing us to stay overnight in Calgary with no compensation

The on time performance and the ease of boarding are great. The crew were cordial. During landing the pilot made a hard landing with some swerve that was a bit rough but other than that everything else is as smooth as it can be.

1.5 hours late departing YVR for a 14-minute flight. Packed waiting area. Full plane. Families with tired, screaming kids. 40-minute wait for baggage at YYJ. For a Dash-8. Obviously there was some kind of breakdown but there was no communication from anyone. Most of this was not WestJet's fault but it was an unpleasant night overall. I fell asleep in a chair waiting for the luggage carousel to start.

Horrible, flight on the way to Vegas was delayed significantly and then on my way back my second flight was cancelled

Difficult to say. Over crowded but that is the fault of the airplane not WestJet

If they have a tv for movie or map during 5h flight could be better and the food can purchase on flight are ok with that.

The crew were on the job, most of the time. No grumpies in the bunch. Boarding is by group nimber - it works but they won't acknowledge Star Alliance status so we found ourselves at the end of the boarding line and possibly challenged for overhead space, but it worked out OK. Food was mediocre, but we go to restaurants for good food, right? It was OK

Flight attendants should learn something about customer service. About how to deal with people Very disappointed This only happens only in Air Canada

Poor ! Couldn’t cancel months ahead because no credit or refund was permitted !! But they still kept contacting us about check in for all flights in spite of our canceling this trip months ago . So disappointed on all fronts with this airline!!

First lag from Toronto to Vancouver. Cold as hell and there is no blanket to provide. Terrible crew and bad attitude

First flight was delayed and then they moved up departure time for flight - not ideal. made it but sprinted the entire time and messed up my ankle

6 hours late on departure from Vancouver due to crew schedules! Unacceptable

The flight was actually good the staff was all friendly, but I have to give it a bad rating because my luggage was damaged and I was not able to claim that it was damaged. I only realized it once I got to my hotel and when I tried to contact Air Canada it was almost impossible. The number give to make claims is only for US & Canada yet I was in Seoul, when I tried contacting the number for Seoul I was once again told to call the other number or to return to the airport (which was not possible at the moment). So very disappointed that there was no way to claim my damaged bag and now I have to try to get a new bag while on vacation.

Mess up with not assigning my husband a seat when our two tickets were purchased at the same time. They put us on standby. We were almost bumped off the plane at the gate before departure. Luckily someone volunteered to get a later flight.

The flight itself was ok the staff was great and so was the inflight food. The biggest problem was that my luggage was damaged (the zipper pull from both sides of the zipper where completely ripped out) and I didn’t notice at the airport but at the hotel and when I tried to make a claim it was not possible for me because I have to either call (which is difficult because I’m in another country) I tried to call every nombre given to me but the one that I need I was never able to contact and going back to the airport was not an option. So it’s basically impossible to make a claim if you are abroad. Very disappointed that there are no other ways to claim a damaged bag and now I need to buy a new luggage while on my trip.

The last minute change of planes, then putting us right beside the bathroom was a poor choice.

The flight was canceled. We only found out at the airport. We had to book another flight which cost us more then the whole trip booked through Kayak. Lynx took our email and was supposed to write us with an alternate flight. We never received an email. They talked about reimbursement which was to be explained in the email (which we never received).

The online system for Lynx air to pay for additional baggage is not satisfactory. I was charged 100+$ for my suitcase when I tried to explain that the online payment was not functional using the app and showed screenshots of the same. In the end I gave up and paid and went ahead.

No snacks, just water.... could have been better. The actual flight was good.

Flight delayed by 4 hours but no communication. With passengers until after the posted departure time became apparent the flight was not going to board even close to on time.

Flight was sent canceled. The absolute most useless staff I have ever witnessed. Utterly careless - literally could not care less. 100% never using this airline again.

Poor communication at the check in counter and boarding gates.

Other then the screaming baby the flight was fine, nothing special

Check in experience was smooth, and the flight attendants were courteous and friendly. Very positive experience overall, thank you all!

Flight arrived late but other than that everything else okay

Great price for a new plane. Only offered water which we knew.

Top 5 airlines serving from Vancouver to Montreal

20+imite delay on the plane with no air. Part of our group had no seats assigned and took a long time to get fixed. Again no wifi and snacks were sad

Don’t actually know how this flight would have been since we missed it.

Our flight was delayed 3.5 hours. Maybe next time make sure its on time as stated. The crew did the best they could, given the circumstances.

Westjet requires you to check in on your cellular. This takes about 5 minutes compared to when there were live humans doing check in. Ultimately the machine meant to spit out boarding passes and baggage tag went into the pinwheel of death. I also got a sternly worded email telling me I was ineligible to check bags, even though I’d checked one. The dude who eventually checked me in barely grunted at me and didn’t give me a baggage check. Had my luggage gone missing, I don’t know how it would have gone. And then there is the chaos as people jammed huge carry ons into small overhead bins. Westjet is a cattle car.

WestJet ran out of dinner meals on a transatlantic flight. Crappy to have a bun and a bit of lettuce for food on a long and not inexpensive flight. Flight staff did not look for options to resolve.

The back seats are crowded and at times uncomfortable. I guess that’s part of the price of paying less for a seat.

Airport monitors did not give the gate for our flight returning Detroit to Vancouver Juice served from glass storage containers are a far more healthy alternative for people. And would also minimize the need for recycling plastic or aluminum containers

Boarding, staff and flight great. A bit disappointed with no in flight online entertainment but I'll live. Landing was a bit of a jolt (more than usual) but hey everything else was smooth. LoL

I’ve been delayed for two days and I’m still stuck in Honolulu tired spending money

The plane was boarding at gate 50 and there was a flight to Toronto at gate 52 making the boarding are chaotic and busy.

Very poor. Flight was cancelled last minute to deploy the plane for another route

The first flight Seattle to Toronto was very poor. My seat was changed. The aircraft was changed. They were having issues with the meals. My second flight from Toronto to Quebec was fine. Short flight still no entertainment. My third flight Quebec to Montreal was very short seats are very uncomfortable, too old and way worn out almost like sitting on a bench. My last flight Montreal to Seattle was fine. Finally, they had some entertainment. Proper food was offered as advertised flight staff was accommodating and friendly, but once again, the aircraft seats are hard like benches.

This time my experience was superior! Much better and improved from after the COVID-19. I hope they maintain the same. Earlier, service (specially crew attitude) was awful and sometime rude, but this time, crew was very welcoming, respectful and ready to serve. I will definitely repeat :-)

I think Air Canada is the only airline I've flown where they don't give you at least a free cookie.

Fruit and cheese platter was dubious quality. The edges of the cheese pieces were dried, plastic looking. Old.

This was a fraudulent transaction. Kayak was at fault for accepting a stolen credit card. Kayak needs to change their verification process.

Airport staff super friendly. Even put us on an earlier flight because we arrived early.

Flight delayed. Thus connection to Paris missed. About 50 people were left alone in YUL for 22 hours. Extra fees involved. No back up from Air Canada. Then the next day issues with luggage (fee paid to Air Canada but flight transfered/ slided onto Air France) .

Air Canada are just not reliable …. Kept cancelling /delaying flights

There are two great routes to take for a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver. The Canadian Route is slightly more direct and cuts straight across southern Canada and through its six largest, most populated provinces.

Our American Route is 420 miles longer but takes in some of America's most interesting states and gives you the opportunity to explore Seattle, Lake Michigan and Chicago. Both routes have impossibly beautiful views so choose the best one depending on your preference of stops.

How to drive from Montreal to Vancouver

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Montreal and Vancouver. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The American Route

The American Route will take you through the northern part of the United States. Begin by heading west on Highway 401 and through Kingston, a beautiful city on Lake Ontario.

Follow this road through Toronto and consider a stop at the capital of Ontario, before crossing the Ambassador Bridge into Detroit, on the American side of the border. From here you can explore Lake Erie as well as the city itself.

Next take Interstate 96 a short distance until it meets I-94 and follow this west, to Gary, Indiana, near the Illinois border on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Continue heading west on I-94 through Madison before arriving at Minneapolis. Consider taking a detour to explore Lake Traverse Reservation or Leech Lake Reservation.

Still heading west on I-94, you will pass several towns in North Dakota before reaching Montana. A worthy detour here would be to visit the stunning Yellowstone National Park and cities such as Missoula.

At Billings, take Interstate 90 west and continue on this road for the rest of the trip as you drive through some majestic scenery alongside New Perce Reservation and Kootenai National Forest.

When you arrive at Seattle, change to the I-5 north and follow it all the way to the Canadian border. Once in Canada the road becomes Highway 99, and you can follow this the remainder of the journey, to your destination in Vancouver.

The Canadian Route

Our alternative route remains almost entirely in Canada. In fact, if you don't wish to cross into the US for some of the attractions along the border, this route never leaves the country.

Begin by heading north on Quebec Autoroute 20 and follow it to Sainte-Agathe-Des-Monts, where it merges with Route 117. You'll follow this to the Ontario border, before a very brief stint on the Trans-Canada Highway brings us to Highway 11.

Consider a stop to explore La Verendrye Wildlife Reserve for its lakes and beautiful walks, before continuing west to the town of Emo, on the US-Canadian border. Parts of the road will be labelled as Highway 17 and Trans-Canada Highway, as they follow the same route in places.

From here take Trans-Canada Highway north to Longbow Lake and then switch to Highway 17 heading west.

Once you pass into Manitoba, the road becomes Trans-Canada Highway 1, which you'll follow the entire way across both Manitoba and driving through Edmonton and Alberta - both of which would make fantastic stops.

Continue on Ab-16 and take in the sights of the stunning Jasper National Park Of Canada before arriving at Kamloops, in British Columbia.

All that's left now is to take Highway 5 south, until it re-joins Trans-Canada Highway 1, and continue following that south all the way to Vancouver.

Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada with Spirit Island in Maligne Lake in the foreground, tall trees beyond the lake and snow capped mountains in the distance under a blue sky.

Best places to stop between Montreal and Vancouver

With two very different routes to choose from for your road trip from Montreal to Vancouver, you're going to have to choose plenty of great places to stay along the way, to both break up the trip and give you plenty of time to see the sights.

With almost 10,000 kilometres of country between the two routes, it's impossible to point out everywhere worth staying and, quite frankly, discovering things on your own is often part of the fun on a road trip.

That said, here's a couple of our favourite locations and hotels, so be sure to make a longer stop at one of each of these:

American Route - Rapid City

Rapid City itself, while beautiful, is likely a location many people will be unfamiliar with, as it isn't exactly a famous city. However, some of the attractions in the surrounding area are considerably more well known.

Mount Rushmore, USA with the faces of former US presidents carved into the Black Hills, trees in the foreground on a sunny day.

Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Deadwood, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Wind Cave National Park are just a few of the famous locations located less than an hours drive from the city.

There are very few places in the entire country with so many famous, historic attractions in such close proximity, which is why this is an absolutely perfect place to have one of your longer stops along the route. It's also over halfway through your route, so ideally placed to rest.

Given the cities location to so many fantastic attractions, there's a great choice of nearby hotels. For convenience, comfort and style, a top choice would have to the Cambria Hotel Rapid City. As well as having the all-important indoor swimming pool, a must on a long road trip, the hotel is stylish, rooms for comfortable and generous and there are wonderful views from the restaurant and poolside.

Located just a short drive from South Dakota attractions, this beautiful hotel is the perfect stop for exploring and relaxing in equal measures.

Canadian Route - Banff

Some 950km from your destination on the Canadian Route and an ideal stop before arriving at Vancouver, Banff is a fantastic overnight stop.

Its growing reputation as one of the premier beauty spots in the entire world, located high up in the Rocky Mountains at about 90-minutes west of Calgary, Banff is home to some of the most picturesque views around.

Banff, Canada with a view of a busy street at winter with the mountain in the distance covered in snow on a sunny day.

From here you are spoilt with glorious surroundings - take a scenic walk through the stunning forests or enjoy a hot drink in one of the many beautiful lodges. Then, for the more thrill-seeking among you, there are world famous ski slopes or locations to go boating on its collection of gorgeous lakes.

However you want to experience it, if you're a fan of scenic, naturally beautiful locations, Banff is an absolute must visit location. For an equally breathtaking experience, we highly recommend a stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs.

Luxurious and historic, the Fairmont Banff Springs is a stunning hotel that offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The building, which is like a beautiful castle, has so much on offer. Indulge at the hotel's beautiful indoor pool or enjoy the spa facilities, before relaxing by the fire at its onsite restaurant and bar. You can also enjoy 360-degree views of Banff National Park and Canada's Castle in the Rockies. Wow.

  • Isle Royale National Park - With less than 27,000 annual visitors, this is the least visited national park in the contiguous US and 4th least overall. The largest island on Lake Superior, it is most famous for the study into the unique relationship between its wolf and moose populations, which has been ongoing for more than 50 years. It also has multiple shipwrecks and smaller islands located in the waters surrounding it.
  • Quetico Provincial Park - A wilderness area popular for canoeing and fishing, which makes up part of Quetico-Superior Country with Superior National Forest on the other side of the border.
  • Voyageurs National Park - A stunning park on the US-Canadian border, full of forests, islands, lakes and rock formations, which are home to numerous species of animals and birds.
  • Winnipeg, Manitoba - The capital and most populous city in Manitoba. Its early railroad history and position as the last major city in the east of the country have earned it the nickname “the gateway to the west”.
  • Calgary, Alberta - The largest and most populated city in Alberta, located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
  • Banff - Canadas oldest national park, Banff is world famous for its stunning collection of lakes, forests, mountains and ski resorts.

Best time to go on a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver

Considering a road trip from Montreal to Vancouver takes two full days of non-stop driving, no matter which of the routes you select, you need to make sure that conditions are perfect so you can see and do everything you plan, both along the route as well as at your destination.

Considering the part of the world you will be travelling through and to, and that the majority of our attractions are outdoors, it leaves us with a relatively small window to work with, in order to ensure temperatures and weather conditions ideal.

We'd strongly recommend making this journey in either July or August when temperatures are around 65 Degrees Fahrenheit and rarely exceed 80, giving you the best weather at our destination of Vancouver as well as throughout the journey.

A trip during July would also give you the opportunity to arrive at our destination in time to experience the thrill of Vancouver's Honda Celebration of Light - a three-day festival showcasing incredible fireworks over the English Bay. There's also an International Jazz Festival held in the city for 12 days in late June and July - just plan ahead and book in advance as the city will get extremely busy during these months.

The Ultimate Cross-Canada Road Trip: Montreal to Vancouver

round trip montreal to vancouver

Mortimer Hotton / EyeEm / Getty Images

Driving from eastern Canada to the country's west coast is a major undertaking, but a rewarding one that you will not forget.

Even Canadians are shocked by the diversity of the people and landscape when traversing the country. You'll be moving through a range of cultures, languages and dialects, provinces , time zones, and topographies that are all compelling and very Canadian. You likely will enjoy some places more than others, but the fact that they all comprise one nation is part of what makes the journey so appealing.

Especially if you're coming from Europe, which is a patchwork of different countries easily accessible to each other, Canada's expanse can be surprising.

The quickest way across Canada is actually heading south in Ontario and continuing through the northern United States. But that would hardly be the Ultimate Canadian Road Trip, now would it?

The stops included on this itinerary are mostly larger urban centers, assuming they will offer a wide variety of hotels with occupancy. If you have a trailer or RV, be sure to know where you can park it overnight . There are lots of campgrounds across Canada but reservations are recommended for the popular ones. In addition, Walmart Canada allows one-night parking free of charge in its parking lots.

Don't be overwhelmed by Canada's size: Embrace it and tackle it head-on with the Ultimate Canadian Road Trip, driving from Montreal, Quebec, west to Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Basics

  • Distance covered: 2,860 miles (4,600 kilometers)
  • Hours driving: About 54 hours, an average of 7 to 8 hours behind the wheel each day
  • Nights: Seven (This number can quite easily be reduced to four or five if you are willing to drive 10 to 12 hours per day. On the other hand, you could also stretch it out by adding more stops or spending more time in your favorite places.)
  • Time zones covered: Four (Beginning in the Eastern time zone, you'll move through Central, Mountain, and end up in the Pacific time zone).
  • Currency used: All provinces in Canada use the Canadian dollar, though some, especially those close to the U.S. border, may accept American money.
  • Safety: Canada is generally a safe country, with strict gun laws and a crime rate much lower than in the U.S. That said, keep your car locked when you're not in it and your valuables in a safe place. The emergency number everywhere is 911.
  • Speed limits: Highway speed is between 100 and 120 km/hour (about 60–75 miles/hour) depending on your province.

Start in Montreal, Quebec

Gregobagel / Getty Images

Steeped in history and infused with French culture, Montreal  is one of Canada's most popular destinations. Chances are you will want to spend at least a night or two here while you explore the unique culture and indulge in the delicious and rich Quebecois cuisine. Old Montreal , especially, is a special chance to stroll cobblestone paths and peruse 17th-century architecture.

Don't worry about your French here. Though many people here speak French, shopkeepers and restaurant and hotel staff pretty much all speak English.

The first leg of your journey from Montreal to Toronto is not a particularly scenic one if you take the quickest route, which is by Highway 401. Nevertheless, there are several nice pit stops along the way, which include historic Kingston or Prince Edward County .

Distance from Montreal, Quebec to Toronto, Ontario: 337 miles (542 kilometers), 6 to 7 hours

First Stop: Toronto, Ontario

Naeem Jaffer / Getty Images

Toronto is Canada's biggest city, its financial center, and the most popular destination for travelers. It is bustling and diverse with no shortage of things to do. But it is a city and if you're not up for tackling the crowds, continue north on Highway 400 past Toronto for about three hours until you arrive in Ontario cottage country, a region of lakes and forest. Here you can find camping or smaller scale motels or resorts in a pretty setting.

Another option is to reach Barrie, a mid-sized city that will reduce the following leg's drive by an hour and a half.

Recognize that Toronto traffic is a nightmare, so if you stay over, get on the road early in the morning or consider staying on the northern outskirts of the city so you can make an easy morning break for the highway. Highway 400 is the fastest route but if you're interested in seeing some of the pretty farmland north of Toronto, hit the more rural roads that run parallel.

Distance from Toronto, Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario: 435 miles (700 kilometers), 7 to 8 hours

Second Stop: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Barrett & MacKay / Getty Images

As you head north of Toronto, your nerves will relax as urban sprawl gives way to the rugged, forested landscape of the Canadian Shield. You'll eventually switch over to the Trans-Canada Highway, which stretches all the way to Vancouver. The route here hugs the giant coast of Lake Huron through Northern Ontario's biggest city, Sudbury, before winding up in Sault Ste. Marie, one of the country's oldest communities.

Sault Ste. Marie, known colloquially as "the Soo," is a riverside community that borders Michigan and you can even cross the International Bridge to reach American soil. If you see a freight ship coming through the canal, it's worth stopping to watch how the complex lock system moves the vessel across the river. Accommodation is limited to smaller-scale hotels and motels but you will see some familiar chains, like Marriott, Delta, and Super 8.

Distance from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Thunder Bay, Ontario: 437 miles (706 kilometers), 8 hours

Third Stop: Thunder Bay, Ontario

Walter Bibikow / Getty Images

There's not a lot to see along the 437-mile stretch between the Soo and Thunder Bay unless you stop at some of the lookouts, where you will witness the craggy beauty of the Canadian Shield. Northern Ontario is relatively unpopulated (most of the province's population lives in the "Golden Horseshoe" region around Toronto). Plus, those Great Lakes just get in the way of everything, making driving "as the crow flies" difficult.

You are now on the Trans-Canada Highway, which is generally single lane. Take care of the transport trucks and wait for passing lanes before overtaking them. Keep your gas tank above half-full as services are limited—especially between October and April—and try to get to Thunder Bay before dark, while always keeping your eyes peeled for moose and deer.

If you have time for sightseeing in Thunder Bay, the Fort William Historical Park is the most popular attraction of the city. It's a re-creation of the fur trading outpost that was in the same spot during the early 1800s and the frontier feel transports visitors to another bygone era.

Distance from Thunder Bay, Ontario to Winnipeg, Manitoba:  436 miles (703 kilometers), 7.5 to 8.5 hours

Fourth Stop: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Ken Gillespie / Design Pics / Getty Images

Continue on Trans-Canada Highway 17 from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg for the most well-worn route and services. But if you're looking for scenery—and way fewer trucks—take Highway 11, which runs south of and parallel to Highway 17. The scenic route adds about an hour to the drive, but you can even reduce that by cutting through Minnesota and back up to Canada.

You made it to Manitoba! The provincial capital of Winnipeg is a fairly populous city, but it's easy to get around and filled with friendly and down-to-earth locals. If you're visiting in the winter, make sure you are fully prepared with heavy jackets and layers; Winnipeg gets frigidly cold, even by Canadian standards.

There are lots of hotels in Winnipeg to suit any range of budget and thriving cultural and culinary scenes. The Forks is a huge cultural space with a market, shopping, restaurants, and more, and is a great place to start your exploration of the city. The must-see attraction of Winnipeg is the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, a powerful exhibition exploring human rights abuses across Canada and the globe.

Distance from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Regina, Saskatchewan: 356 miles (573 kilometers), 6 hours

Fifth Stop: Regina, Saskatchewan

Between Winnipeg and Regina, you're in the heart of the Prairies, meaning flat. Police have reportedly pulled over people for reading books while driving here. If you are looking to shave some time off of your trip, this may be a stop to eliminate if you want to get closer to Calgary. It's not that Regina isn't worth visiting, but if you're itching for the dramatic landscapes and picturesque views of the Candian Rockies, you'll need to drive a bit farther.

The drive through the Prairies is scenic albeit a bit monotonous, but you can break up the drive by stopping in some of the province's best sites that are easily accessible from the Trans-Canadian Highway. Moose Mountain Provincial Park and Qu'Appelle Valley are just short detours off the highway and really showcase the beauty of Saskatchewan.

Distance from Regina, Saskatchewan to Calgary, Alberta: 472 miles (760 kilometers), 7.5 hours

Sixth Stop: Calgary, Alberta

John E. Marriott / Getty Images

Like many cosmopolitan centers in Canada, Calgary is multicultural, safe, friendly, and in close proximity to abundant natural beauty. It's also a big city that some may wish to avoid, so you can consider carrying on to Canmore or Banff , both of which are pristine alpine towns with plenty of amenities for travelers. But as far as cities go, Calgary is one of Canada's most charming. The Stephen Avenue Walk in downtown is a pedestrian street with the best restaurants, bars, boutiques, and cafes in town.

For an interesting detour along the route, the town of Drumheller isn't far off the highway and is considered by some to be the dinosaur capital of the world. These rocky badlands are a drastic change in scenery from the rest of the route, and you can see Canada's largest collection of fossils in The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology .

Distance from Calgary, Alberta to Kelowna, B.C.: 382 miles (615 kilometers), 7 hours

Seventh Stop: Kelowna, B.C.

Michael DeFreitas / robertharding / Getty Images

By this point, you'll have already seen some incredible scenery. But the best has been saved for last, and the final stretch through British Columbia will blow you away. The shortest route along the Trans-Canada Highway is incredibly scenic through the towns of Golden and Revelstoke—home to two of Canada's best ski resorts—and perfect places to stop for lunch and photos.

This route departs from the Trans-Canadian Highway and stops in Kelowna , which is in the heart of the Okanagan Wine Region. If you're not wild about wine, skip it and stay on the Trans-Canada highway. The town of Kamloops is a picturesque town with plenty of options for accommodations and would make a great pitstop before the final leg of the trip.

Distance from Kelowna, B.C. to Vancouver, B.C.: 242 miles (390 kilometers), 4.5 hours

End in Vancouver, B.C.

Michael Wheatley / Getty Images

Get out the rain gear and put on your Birkenstocks. You made it to Vancouver, B.C ., Canada's answer to San Francisco and one of the world's most livable cities. Surrounded both by water and mountains, Vancouver is a big urban center with laid-back charm.

Though you deserve to put up your feet after the big drive, that's the last thing you'll want to do in Vancouver, where the people are always on the move, either kayaking, jogging the seawall, climbing the Grouse Grind , or any number of other ways to enjoy the city. You won't be at a loss for things to do in one of North America's trendiest cities.

Leeds 2024-25 fixture release: When are they announced? What is changing?

LEEDS, ENGLAND - APRIL 01: Leeds United players huddle in front of a tv camera before the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Hull City at Elland Road on April 01, 2024 in Leeds, England. (Photo by Ed Sykes/Getty Images)

It is nearly time to get the calendar down from the wall and start writing in football fixtures for the new season.

For the first time in a long time, Leeds United fans will be able to write a lot more of their matches in pen rather than pencil as the EFL ’s new broadcast deal brings stability to the fixture list.

When the 2024-25 season gets under way, a new bumper £935million ($1.17bn) domestic TV rights deal between the EFL and Sky Sports will bring about a raft of changes to kick-off times, fixture rescheduling and where fans can watch their team.

Domestically, iFollow — or in-house channels such as LUTV — is out and Sky Sports is the new home of the EFL. International fans will still be able to watch matches on iFollow or LUTV.

When are fixtures announced and what is changing?

The official fixture list will be published on Wednesday, June 26 at 9am. There will be a later announcement, anticipated to be sometime in July, confirming which matches have been selected for broadcast on Sky Sports along with any changes to kick-off times. This list should include all games running up to the January break for the third round of the FA Cup .

It will be a welcome change for Leeds fans to be able to plan so far in advance. Previous rules allowed for fixtures to be moved at five weeks’ notice although, in some cases, games have been moved with even less warning. Leeds’ healthy travelling support will benefit from more certainty over when games are being played and whether they will need to book hotels or be able to travel by train without the need to rearrange at late notice.

And there is more good news for regular matchgoers among the Leeds fanbase, who have made their dislike of Sky’s dominance over fixture rescheduling well-known in chants during recent seasons.

Leeds will be selected less often on Sky after Daniel Farke’s team were shown 33 times in 2023-24. As part of the new deal, the EFL has promised more parity for teams shown on TV, with a commitment for each of the 72 teams to be broadcast a minimum of 20 times. Championship clubs will be selected a maximum of 24 times.

round trip montreal to vancouver

A record 1,059 matches will be broadcast throughout the season. The majority will be Championship games (328) with League One and League Two getting equal air time (248 matches each).

All 15 play-off matches will be shown live at the end of the season — but Leeds will not want any part of that after last year’s final defeat to Southampton at Wembley continued their play-off curse.

Will kick-off times change?

With more games being shown live on Sky, but the traditional 3pm blackout remaining in place, it will mean a wider spread of kick-off times, which will likely affect Leeds. As part of the five-year deal, just 26 EFL games will take place in the 3pm slot on a Saturday — and therefore be protected by the blackout. Of these, seven will be in the Championship, with 19 in League One and League Two combined.

Five Championship matches will be shown in the UK over the weekend, along with five from Leagues One and Two. These could take place in an earlier 12.30pm kick-off on a Saturday, as well as frequent slots on Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes (12.30pm kick-off) as is common currently. Leeds could also feature in selected picks on Thursday or Monday nights as well.

This means there will be 11 games from the Championship shown on SkySports+ each weekend.

Most of the games shown on Sky are expected to be midweek games, broadcast in a similar way to the red button function used in recent years.

Every game on the opening day, the final day and Bank Holiday matches (Easter, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day) will be broadcast live.

Will Leeds benefit and will broadcast quality improve?

When iFollow first launched in 2017 for overseas fans and began streaming to UK viewers the following year, it was often a one-camera broadcast of limited quality. Over the years, those rules changed to a four-camera requirement for Championship games, although some clubs have more.

The new deal with Sky will see an improvement on this offering, with a minimum of six cameras at Championship games and four cameras for League One and Two games where the requirement was previously one camera.

round trip montreal to vancouver

Across the leagues, annual TV income will increase to £180million plus an additional £7m from domestic and a further £7m from international streaming.

What about cup games and fixtures after Christmas?

Every Carabao Cup match is included in the new broadcast deal, meaning 93 games will be shown live, as well as 127 Bristol Street Motors Trophy games.

By the start of November, an announcement will follow regarding the selection of Leeds’ fixtures to be shown live up to the start of March. After that period, decisions will be made on a four-week rolling basis from the start of February — which is closer to the current system.

vancouver-flights-yvr-verified-traveller-program

Travellers catching flights, ferries, or driving out of the Lower Mainland should brace for increased traffic over the Canada Day long weekend.

Traffic will be busiest leaving Metro Vancouver on Friday (June 28) and returning Monday, which is the Canada Day holiday. However, the weekend may see an uptick in travellers visiting from other areas.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) welcomed more than one million travellers across the Canada-U.S. border over the weekend in 2023.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) plans to welcome 7.8 million passengers over the summer and many of them plan to travel over the long weekend.

Air passengers who booked with WestJet should monitor their flights; some flights have been cancelled due to the strike action . The airline introduced flexible booking policies for flights and vacation packages for the long weekend.

Tips for driving across the Canada-U.S. border

The CBSA recommends that travellers cross the border at non-peak hours, such as the early morning. The agency says Mondays after holiday long weekends tend to be the busiest.

Drivers using a GPS application (such as Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze) to get to a port of entry, should check different navigation options (such as fastest and shortest routes) to determine the best route.

  • Check the border wait times web page before you leave : Travellers should check the U.S.  border wait times  well before they leave to see current conditions. Also, best to check the official CBSA  Directory of Offices and Services  for a port of entry’s hours of operation.
  • Have your travel documents handy : Whether travelling by land, air or water, you can help speed things up by coming prepared with your travel documents.
  • Special forms for dogs (and other animal pals) : Anyone planning to  bring a pet  on holiday or import one back into the country must complete the requisite forms.
  • Recommendations for travelling with children : When travelling with children, it is recommended that the accompanying adult have a  consent letter authorizing them  to travel with the child. Border services officers are always watching for  missing children . In the absence of the letter, officers may ask additional questions, to help them identify the relationship between the child and the accompanying adult.

Tips for flying in and out of the Vancouver Airport (YVR)

Travellers should check weather conditions several days before their flight in their departure city and destination. If your flight is in North America, monitor major storms across the continent.

If possible, booking a backup flight provides an option during peak travel times when cancellations are likely. Depending on the fare class you book, you can cancel the backup flight and use the credit for future travel.

Always book travel insurance with trip interruption, trip cancellation, medical for over $5 million, and comprehensive baggage loss and delay. Read the fine print closely.

Save time with   Advance Declaration

The CBSA advises travellers to save time passing through customs by making an advance declaration in the ArriveCan app. The advance declaration is admissible at the following airports: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg, Halifax, Quebec City, Ottawa, Billy Bishop, Calgary and Edmonton.

Using the ArriveCan app cuts a traveller's time at a kiosk or eGate by up to 50 per cent, according to CBSA data.

The pandemic-introduced app is also useful for travellers who need to make a  tight connection in another Canadian city  on the way to Vancouver. For example, if your first stop is at Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ), you must go through customs in Toronto before flying to YVR. Filling out your information in the app in advance will allow you to move through a priority lane.

Travellers should also check in with their airline before heading to the airport. This will speed up the process of checking in once they arrive.

YVR also offers  several tips to help travellers save time at the airport.

Book your spot for security screening in advance

Consider using  YVR Express  to reserve your spot in security screening. The tool is available for those flying within Canada or to the U.S. and allows you to pre-book your spot up to 72 hours before your flight, even during peak holiday hours.

Use YVR's 'Journeys' tool

YVR offers a tool that allows passengers to view a  step-by-step guide  through the airport based on their specific flight information.

Parking at YVR or using other forms of transportation

There are a few different options available for air passengers looking to take advantage of long-term parking at YVR. All of them are priced based on convenience, meaning the faster you can get to the terminal from your car, the higher the cost of keeping your vehicle at the airport. Have a look at the  pros and cons of these options.

Use your smartphone to speed up your time in line

Locals who plan to fly to the U.S. from Canada can submit their passport and customs  declaration information through a free, secure app  on their smartphone before they leave for a trip. It's called the U.S. Customer Customs Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app.

Tips for sailing with BC Ferries

BC Ferries says there is limited space available  for customers looking to book in advance with a vehicle on routes between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.

Thursday and Friday are expected to be the most popular times to travel from Metro Vancouver to Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. Monday will be the most popular time for travellers returning to the Lower Mainland.

If you plan to drive on board without a booking during peak times, arrive prepared for sailing waits. To avoid sailing waits, walk on board. If you’re planning to drive, travel on off-peak days (Saturday and Sunday) and times (early morning or late night).

BC Ferries says travellers should check the  current conditions  and  all routes at a glance  for the status of their sailing on the day of travel before they head out.

Here are a few more tips for BC Ferries passengers:

  • Arrive early for your trip : BC Ferries recommends arriving at the terminal approximately 45-60 minutes before their scheduled departure. Walk-on passengers should arrive 45 minutes before their anticipated sailing.
  • Ride-share, if possible : Customers are encouraged to carpool or travel as a foot passenger. Vehicle deck space fills up quickly.
  • Travel car-free : Take public transit to and from major terminals. For schedule information, visit  TransLink online .
  • Consider parking options : Parking lots at the major terminals fill up quickly during peak periods. If possible, choose public transit or arrange to be dropped off at the terminal to avoid traffic congestion.

2024 NBA Draft: Lakers select Bronny James, son of LeBron James, in second round

Bronny James talks to media during the 2024 NBA basketball Draft Combine in Chicago, Tuesday, May 14, 2024. (Nam Y. Huh / AP Photo)

It was the dream that LeBron James first floated a few years ago, the notion of playing in the NBA alongside one of his sons.

And it's a step closer to reality now.

Bronny James -- the oldest son of the NBA's all-time scoring leader and four-time champion -- was drafted Thursday by the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that his father has played for since 2018. Bronny James was taken with the No. 55 overall pick, deep in the second round and with only three picks remaining in this year's draft.

"Beyond blessed," Bronny James wrote in an Instagram post.

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories

Adding further intrigue to the move: LeBron James can become a free agent next week, which means he could choose to leave the Lakers and sign elsewhere.

"In the history of the NBA, there's never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court and that feels like something that could be magical," Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said. "We know, and have to respect of course, that LeBron has a decision on his opt-out ... but if it worked out that he was on our team next season, NBA history could be made. And NBA history should be made in a Lakers uniform."

The draft move doesn't guarantee that father and son will actually play in a game together, nor does it even guarantee that Bronny James will be on the Lakers' roster next season. But it certainly raises the possibility that it could happen in what would be an NBA first -- a father-son on-court duo in the league simultaneously as players. There have been about 100 instances in NBA history of players joining the league after their fathers played, but those always came at least five years after the father's career ended.

But LeBron James' incredible longevity -- he'll match Vince Carter for the longest career as an NBA player ever this coming season, which will be his 22nd in the league -- makes the father-son duo possible.

"With the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select Bronny James from the University of Southern California," NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said in announcing the pick, making the moment official for the 19-year-old, who was born just before the start of his father's second NBA season.

  • Top sports headlines, all in one place

It's possible that Bronny James' debut in a Lakers uniform could be July 12 in Las Vegas, in the franchise's summer league opener against the Houston Rockets.

Bronny James is a guard, one who was listed at 6-foot-4 on Southern California's roster but measured at six feet, 1 1/2 inches at the draft combine. That would make him one of the shortest players in the NBA, but his athleticism and defensive ability helped give him this opportunity.

"Bronny is, first and foremost, a person of high character," Pelinka said. "And second, he is a young man that works incredibly hard. Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental corps at the Lakers."

There will be cries of nepotism, cries that the Lakers did this only because of who LeBron James is. But Pelinka insisted that the Lakers will have a plan for Bronny James' development, that the organization sees his potential and that he personally has been impressed with the character Bronny James showed while growing up.

Pelinka and the Lakers staff, including newly hired coach J.J. Redick, made the call to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul before the pick was made and were able to speak with Bronny James moments before the selection was officially official.

"Coach Redick and I were able to welcome him to the Lakers family and let him know that this moment was happening mostly because of the work he's put into the game and because of the character young man that he is," Pelinka said. "That was what was expressed to him on the phone call."

Bronny James played one year of college basketball at USC and averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season. He played in 25 games, missing the start of the season after needing a procedure last year to fix what was diagnosed as a congenital heart defect, which was found after he went into cardiac arrest during a summer workout.

A panel of doctors cleared Bronny James for NBA play last month.

Nike, the shoe giant that LeBron James has had a business relationship with through the entirety of his NBA career, wasted no time in congratulating Bronny James by releasing a new ad -- "The journey continues. Welcome to the big stage, Bronny," the company wrote.

Day two of the draft saw 24 other players get taken before Bronny James, though none of them -- not even close, really -- got the attention that the No. 55 selection received, for obvious reasons.

The 55th pick rarely turns out to be a player who captures a slew of attention. The best 55th pick in NBA history would be current Miami Heat guard Patty Mills, selected in 2009 and someone who has scored 7,893 points in his 15-season career.

Some other notable No. 55 picks include Marc Iavaroni, Mark Blount, Kenny Gattison and E'Twaun Moore. There's never been a No. 55 pick that was an NBA All-Star, an All-NBA player, an All-Rookie team player or an All-Defensive team pick.

Last season's No. 55 pick, Isaiah Wong, scored exactly two points for Indiana as a rookie. Add up every No. 55 pick ever, and their NBA career scoring total is 28,364 points -- more than 12,000 points less than LeBron James has scored in his career.

"The biggest moments in sports happen with the Lakers," Pelinka said. "That's how we're built and we're excited to see this story unfold."

Flyers might have right pieces to trade for the Bruins’ Linus Ullmark before the NHL Draft

Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark goaltender could be on the move soon, and the Flyers have pieces to put a deal together.

F ive weeks after steering their Zamboni into Causeway’s summer storage shed, the Bruins now head to Las Vegas for what could be an impactful few days alongside the 31 other NHL clubs gathered for the Friday-Saturday entry draft at the dazzling Sphere entertainment complex.

For the Bruins, the draft itself portends to be a low-event affair as general manager Don Sweeney is without a pick to make until Saturday’s fourth round (No. 121). That could change, and dramatically, if Sweeney opts to move roster parts, including the long-rumored trade of goalie Linus Ullmark .

Ullmark has one season remaining on the four-year/$20 million pact he signed upon his arrival as a free agent in July 2021. With such a limited term left on his deal, it’s highly unlikely, though not out of the question, that a club would offer Sweeney a Round 1 pick for the Swedish stopper.

A year ago, when Ullmark was fresh off winning his Vezina and with two years left on term, would have been the most opportune time for the Bruins to deal for a high pick or a proven roster player. Even then, trade partners would have been restricted to cities Ullmark would approve in trade — all of which remains true today. Neither Ullmark nor the Bruins have revealed the teams he would accept as his new port of call.

Six clubs — Chicago, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Philadelphia, and San Jose — head to Vegas holding a pair of first-round picks apiece. Ottawa owns pick No. 25, the spot the Bruins wheeled to Detroit at the 2023 trade deadline to acquire Tyler Bertuzzi . The Red Wings subsequently dished it to the Senators when acquiring Alex DeBrincat .

Of those six clubs holding a pair of aces, the Flyers could be the most intriguing as a potential trade partner. If not for losing goaltender Carter Hart to his ongoing legal problems , the Flyers could have made the playoffs had he been available. The Flyers own Round 1 picks 12 and 32. Would it be worth it for Philadelphia to surrender No. 32 for that last year remaining on Ullmark’s deal? Looks like a no-brainer from here, but, again … Ullmark’s trade list of “yeas” and “nays” remains hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wickenheiser’s front porch.

The Flyers finished 4 points below the wild-card cut line in the East this season. Ullmark (31 in July) and fellow Swede Samuel Ersson (25 in October) would seem to be a fit nearly as perfect as the hug-hug-me-do brothers Jeremy Swayman and Ullmark. For that last pick in Round 1, the Flyers could accept the risk that Ullmark could walk after the one season, while also having him for all of 2024-25, hoping to sell him on an extension.

Word around the Flyers early this past week was that they want to move on from Cam Atkinson , the former Boston College star winger, now 35, whose production plummeted this season (13-15–28). Atkinson can play either wing and has displayed some power-play pop over the years (106 PP points).

If the Flyers would eat, say, half of Atkinson’s one year remaining at $5.87 million, he could be a bona fide Line 2-3 plug-in for the Bruins for a season, particularly now that it appears a fait accompli that forward Jake DeBrusk won’t be extending his stay on Causeway.

If the top of the draft order goes off as planned Friday, the Sharks will lead off by selecting Macklin Celebrini , the Boston University forward who just won college hockey’s top honor (Hobey Baker) as a freshman. He’ll turn pro right away and report directly to the Sharks’ top line or head to the Bay Area next spring after playing his sophomore season at the right end of Comm. Ave.

Be it immediately or in the spring of 2025, Celebrini is likely looking at a long, potentially torturous grind in San Jose, where the lowly Sharks have linked together five playoff DNQs. He will be stepping into a scenario reminiscent of that of Clayton Keller , another BU standout, who turned pro at 18 with the Coyotes in the spring following his freshman year with the Terriers.

Keller, a slick and impactful winger, was plucked at the No. 7 spot by the Coyotes in 2016. Eight years later, he’s on his way with the team to Utah, after playing in only nine playoff games since signing with the Coyotes. Had he remained at BU, he could have declared free agency after his senior year (summer 2020) and signed an entry-level deal with the team of his choosing. He already could have his name chiseled into the Stanley Cup once or twice. Instead, he’s off to Salt Lake, his first crack at free agency scheduled for July 1, 2028.

Following the Sharks, the next four picks are owned by the Blackhawks, Ducks, Blue Jackets, and Canadiens, all of whom look destined to finish again below the playoff cut line in 2024-25.

Including San Jose, those five also-rans have combined to post 21 DNQs over the last five seasons. Once down in the NHL, it’s a long, filthy climb out of the Original 32 dumpster.

A Swayman swap

An interesting thought.

Bereft of draft picks, and currently without a first-round pick for a third straight draft, the Bruins are not poised to be major players in Vegas this coming week. A Linus Ullmark deal could brighten the picture somewhat, but otherwise general manager Don Sweeney’s greatest tradeable asset is … hold on, Gallery Gods … Jeremy Swayman .

Unthinkable, right? Until you think it through a little.

Only 25, Swayman looks like he could be a franchise goalie here for eight years or more. He is also a restricted free agent, possibly headed again to the salary arbitration soul-sucking machine. Swayman is a rare commodity, one that could induce an acquiring club to pay him top-of-the-market money (led by Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky at $10 million per).

The return in a trade from Boston’s standpoint would have to include a franchise center and perhaps a No. 3-4 defenseman — the club’s two critical needs. Both players would have to be, like Swayman, mid-20s, and also under contract with numbers that work comfortably within the cap. Yes, a giant ask, but otherwise it would be managerial malpractice to wheel away a potential franchise goalie who is still maybe a few years from entering his prime performance seasons.

The follow-on step would be to extend Ullmark’s deal by three or four years, along with promoting untested Providence stopper Brandon Bussi , who turns 26 Tuesday.

Dealing Swayman would be, by far, the riskiest, most aggressive move Sweeney has made since taking control of the corner office in 2015. For potential impact, it would have the potential to rival the seismic deal of Nov. 7, 1975, in which GM Harry Sinden wheeled franchise icon Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais to the Rangers for a package that included Jean Ratelle and Brad Park . They were all big names, but also older names, which slightly diminished the overall risk. The Ratelle-Park combo helped the Bruins twice make it to the Cup Final and the semifinals twice more over the next four seasons during what was the height of the franchise’s glorious Lunchpail AC era.

Sinden’s other bold, big-impact moves included the acquisitions of Rick Middleton from the Rangers (1976) and Cam Neely from Vancouver (1986) — two relative unknowns, undervalued by the clubs that drafted them, who soon became franchise forwards with the Black and Gold.

Rarely do we see such impactful, franchise-shifting deals anymore in the NHL’s salary cap/free agency era. Transformations are more likely to occur the day free agency begins (a week from Monday, by the way), which is what happened here when the Bruins signed Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard in 2006.

Swayman’s profile, and the current state of a Boston franchise unable to win more than a first-round series the last five seasons, at least raises the question whether Sweeney could consider a landmark deal. Such opportunities are few, and fraught with huge risk — something that didn’t keep Sinden from making three of the best deals in franchise history.

Jeremy Swayman has the looks of a franchise player.

McDavid earned

His own hardware.

Connor McDavid’s point production in the Cup Final was somewhat muted out of the gate, at least by his otherworldly standards. He was contained to 0-3–3 in Games 1-3, before piling on with 1-3–4 in Game 4 and 2-2–4 in Game 5.

The Oilers will return to Sunrise for Game 7 Monday night with McDavid the clear-cut MVP candidate in the playoffs, Cup or no Cup. Only one non-goalie in NHL history, Reggie Leach , ever took home playoff MVP (Conn Smythe) honors while playing for the runner-up.

Leach, a Bruins draft pick, won the Smythe in 1976 with the Flyers, who were rubbed out by the Canadiens in a four-game sweep, Leach collecting four goals in the Final, finishing the postseason 19-5–24 in 16 games, including his five-goal heroics May 6 vs. the Bruins that clinched the semifinal series at the Spectrum.

McDavid, appearing in the Final for the first time, will enter Game 7 with a playoff-record 34 assists and points total (42) that ranks fourth all time. Wayne Gretzky set the one-season mark for playoff points during his Oiler halcyon days, connecting for 17-30–47 in 1985 and winning his first of two MVPs.

The four goalies to win the Smythe while backing the Cup runner-up were Roger Crozier (Detroit, 1966), Glenn Hall (St. Louis, 1968), Ron Hextall (Philadelphia, 1987), and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (Anaheim, 2003). None of the four ever repeated as Smythe winners.

Loose pucks

Just under three weeks after taking over the top spot in the Blue Jackets front office, Don Waddell canned Pascal Vincent as coach, making the 52-year-old the 12th bench boss firing of the 2023-24 season. The others sent packing: Jay Woodcroft (Oilers), Dean Evason (Wild), Craig Berube (Blues), D.J. Smith (Senators), Lane Lambert (Islanders), Todd McLellan (Kings), Lindy Ruff (Devils), Don Granato (Sabres), David Quinn (Sharks), Dave Hakstol (Kraken), and Sheldon Keefe (Maple Leafs). No word yet on Vincent’s replacement, who’ll be charged with hoisting the Blue Jackets back into the playoffs for the first time since they lost to the Lightning, 4-1, in the 2020 bubble games … Jay Leach , two years after leaving the top coaching job at AHL Providence for an assistant’s gig in Seattle, landed in Boston as one of Jim Montgomery’s assistants just days after Hakstol was kicked to the curb by the Kraken. Joe Sacco , 10 years after arriving here as one of Claude Julien’s assistants, also has been promoted to associate coach alongside Montgomery. It’s likely that Sacco, bench boss in Colorado over four seasons (2009-13), will handle some of Montgomery’s off-day workouts and will fill in for some of the daily media interactions — similar to the roles Barry Smith and Dave Lewis fulfilled for years working with Scotty Bowman in Detroit. Montgomery and Bowman are longtime pals and and the two likely exchanged ideas for a different day-to-day approach after back-to-back disappointing playoff runs for Montgomery and Co. … The Rangers on Tuesday put out a teaser when placing veteran center Barclay Goodrow on waivers (with three years/$3.64 million cap hit remaining on his deal) and the Sharks took the bait, easily fitting the former Shark on their payroll. Goodrow, 31, was poised to be cut free once the annual buyout window opened 48 hours after the conclusion of the Cup Final. Goodrow has never been a big producer, but he is a solid (6 feet 2 inches, 210 pounds) left-shot pivot capable of leading the bottom six and winning faceoffs (54 percent this season). At a reduced pay rate, he could have been a solid pick-up for the Bruins, who saw a lot of Goodrow during his days with Tampa Bay, where he won the Cup in 2020 and ‘21 … Reggie Leach’s five-spot in 1976, with Gilles Gilbert in net for the Bruins, tied what remains the record for goals in one playoff game. Montreal’s Newsy Lalonde was the first to do it in 1919, followed by the Habs’ Maurice Richard in 1944. Leach’s five goals came only two weeks after Toronto’s Darryl Sittler scorched the Flyers’ Bernie Parent for five of his own. Penguins superstar Mario Lemieux remains the last to do it, going 5-3–8 against Hextall and the Flyers in a 10-7 win April 25, 1989. Lemieux and New Jersey’s Patrik Sundstrom remain the lone NHLers to roll up eight in one playoff game … As of this fall, four of the five players the Bruins drafted last June will be playing college hockey, including Cornell forward Ryan Walsh , who posted a solid first year for the Big Red. Center Chris Pelosi spent the season with USHL Sioux Falls and now will head to Quinnipiac. Another USHLer, center Beckett Hendrickson will suit up for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. And Casper Nassen , a 6-3 Swedish forward, is headed to North America for the first time and will join the Miami University roster. The only member of the club’s 2023 draft class not playing in the NCAA will be Swedish defenseman Kristian Kostadinski , who’ll remain with Frolunda. It’s possible all five will be in Brighton for the July 1 start of the Bruins’ four-day development camp … Tennis legend Roger Federer , not a hockey guy, just days ago delivered a humorous, poignant commencement speech at Dartmouth. Some of his words, though framed around tennis, apply to all sports, and might resonate with the 18-year-olds who’ll hear their names called at this coming week’s draft in Las Vegas, as well as those left unchosen. Over his career, noted Federer, he won nearly 80 percent of 1,526 singles matches. “What percentage of the points,” he asked the Big Green grads, “do you think I won in the those matches?” Answer: 54 percent, which is also to say Federer lost 46 percent of all the points he chased around the world. The lesson? “When you lose almost every second point,” said the Wimbledon grand master, “you learn not to dwell on every shot.” Accept the failure, and move on. “Be relentless,” said the artful Roger. “Adapt and grow.” … The Sphere, located roughly a mile off the Vegas Strip, was built at a cost of $2.3 billion and looks like it fell out of the solar system and plunked right down there at 255 Sands Ave. in the Nevada desert. Rumors persist that the NHL hoped Al “The Planet” Iafrate would call out the names of the first round Friday night. Globe efforts to contact The Planet were unsuccessful.
