Interview with Jason Rockman, Vocalist of Slaves On Dope!
We were recently able to catch up with Slaves On Dope frontman Jason Rockman. If you aren’t familiar with the band you are probably under the age of 25 or you’ve been living under a large rock. The band stormed the scene in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and won fans over from their stomping ground in Montreal, Canada all the way across the U.S. They were slung in the nu-metal category with other bands of that time frame, but they aren’t really a band you can put in such a narrowly defined genre. I remember vividly buying the album “Inches from the Mainline” just because I thought the album art was cool. Sometimes back then that is how you bought albums, sometimes you won and sometimes you lost. This one was a major win. Slaves was different, they brought a lot of elements to their sound that made them stand out and that is why they still have fans addicted and eagerly awaiting new material.
Metal Nexus: So Slaves On Dope spent some time apart from around 2004 to 2009, What inspired you guys to reform? Jason Rockman: Kevin and i took some much needed space away from the band, and sorted out life after slaves..we both needed to reinvent ourselves, and we both agree it was the best thing we could have ever done for the future of slaves. we both came back to the table with renewed interest in writing and creating, and it shows in the music we have made since, and are continuing to make Metal Nexus: When you reformed was there an immediate chemistry or was there an adjustment period to get back in the rhythm with the band? Rockman: It was like no time had passed. We took to it like a fish in water MN: You released “Over the Influence” in 2012, How did that seem to go over? Rockman: The last album was a lot of fun to do. We had zero expectations, and gave zero fucks what people thought of it. We did it purely to please ourselves, and in the process, it ended up making our fans pretty happy. Just the fact that we were back at it was enough to please some, and being able to produce our own videos to accompany the songs was amazing! MN: We haven’t heard much from you guys as of lately, what has been going on with you, as well as the band? Rockman: I am really busy at CHOM and CJAD, and work with Heavy Montreal as a spokesperson for the festival. I am also very involved in Montreal and Ottawa Comiccons, and am developing a TV show about Geek culture. Kevin has a studio, and is a full time producer. He also plays a mean game of hockey MN: We have heard that you guys have been working on a new album, when can we expect another release from Slaves on Dope? Rockman: We are in the process or recording the next album, HORSE, and hope to have it out in late 2015 MN: I know you have played Amesia Rockfest the past 2 years and will be playing Heavy Montreal in the next couple weeks, How are crowds receiving you guys? Has anything changed with how you perform on stage? Rockman: It has been great! The crowds seem to really dig it. We are obviously older, but i think we do pretty well for a couple of middle aged men. MN: A lot of late 90’s and early 2000’s nu metal bands are making waves like Flaw and 40 Below Summer, Do you think nu-metal is making a comeback? Or do you think it never really left? Rockman: It is definitely starting to make a comeback. Let’s face it, it was a great time for bands in that era, and the aggression was there, It also had a groove to it that just doesn’t seem to happen in newer rock bands MN: Do you have any plans for a U.S. tour in the near future? Rockman: Fingers crossed, we should be stateside in 2016. I know the first city that will get a SLAVES U.S show will be Madison, WI..WJJO and the on air staff there are like family…we owe them big time. Randy Hawke and Ozz the bomb. MN: Also as most people may or may not know you are on the other side of the microphone now too. You of course have your own radio show called “Amped with The Rockman”. How has that been working on the media/radio side of things? Who has some of your favorite interviews been with? Rockman: I have the best job ever. I am in the position to help young bands get airplay, and really play a part in their development . I feel like SANTA when i am able to tell a band that we have added them to rotation. Some of the best interviews have been with U2, Peter Gabriel, Dave Grohl, Phil Anselmo, Ice T, Mastodon, The Offspring, Queens of the Stone Age and New Order
I’m sure Slaves On Dope fans worldwide are very pleased they are working on a new album titled “Horse”, as of July 27th Jason was laying down some vocals. Great to know as well that they are doing everything themselves and have 100% artistic freedom. I also want to add that Mr. Rockman celebrated a major anniversary recently. July 25th marked his 23rd year sober and we couldn’t be happier for him. We look forward to hearing the new album and hopefully seeing them on U.S. soil soon.

Slaves on Dope Featuring DMC, ‘Script Writer’ – Exclusive Video Premiere
Slaves on Dope are ready to rock once more. The band has a new album called [HORSE] due on Oct. 7 and they're teaming up with Loudwire to exclusively bring you the premiere of the video for their song "Script Writer," which features a guest turn by RUN-DMC legend Darryl "DMC" McDaniels .
The clip, set in a hospital, centers on a man (played by singer Jason Rockman) dealing with his inner demons in his drab environment, occasionally channeling his emotions through the projected existence of DMC. Meanwhile, the other Slaves on Dope band members can be spotted rocking out in the dimly lit white hallways.
Singer Jason Rockman tells us, "Working with Darryl was a dream come true for us. Being RUN-DMC fans since we were kids, he has always been someone we wanted to collaborate with. He came to Montreal prepared and later down his parts in three takes. A true pro. We bonded over our love of comic books and Public Enemy, and he came back in July for the Montreal Comicon, so we shot the video for the song while he was here. We can't wait for the world to hear what we created!"
The "Script Writer" clip was directed by JP Barcha Charlebois and provides the perfect complement for the anguish going on within the song and the mind of the central character in the video.
As stated, "Script Writer" appears on the [HORSE] album, which is due Oct. 7. The album also includes guest appearances by Mastodon's Bill Kelliher, Bad Brains vocalist H.R. and The Damn Truth's Lee-La Baum. If you want to pre-order the album, you can do so via Amazon and iTunes . You can also pre-order the album via the band's website . Catch Slaves on Dope on tour at these stops .

The first signing to Sharon Osbourne 's Divine Records label, SLAVES ON DOPE are a generic, tuneless exercise in by-the-numbers pimprock that never manage to establish a sound of their own, coming across instead like a second-rate variation of all the trendy sounds that are popular on the L.A. rock scene.
Originally from Montreal, California-based SLAVES ON DOPE are competent enough musicians, and their Thom Panunzio -produced album is certainly not lacking in the sonic department, featuring a production that is not a million miles removed from that of the DEFTONES Adrenaline CD. However, the group's testosterone-driven sound gets old very quickly, with vocalist Jason Rockman 's largely one-dimensional screaming only occasionally interspersed with a more melodic approach, adding a small dose of dynamics to what is an otherwise texture-deprived offering.
In the grand scheme of things, SLAVES ON DOPE is nothing but a minor-league player in an oversaturated scene that has been bled dry through the recent commercial success of the genre's forerunners. While I've heard much worse, Inches From The Mainline is simply not good enough to raise the band above the standards set by the bulk of their competition, and it doesn't bode well for SLAVES ON DOPE 's chances of survival once the ongoing pimprock explosion has finally (and inevitably) blown over.

Scheduled performer – 10th Annual LA Music Awards 2001
Slaves on Dope is a Canadian Nu metal band based in Montreal, Canada.
The band was formed in the 1993 by Jason Rockman, Kevin Jardine and Avrum Nadigel, highly influenced by the “Grunge” era. The original line-up also included Patrick Francis, and Lenny Vartanian. In 1995, the bass guitarist Francis and the drummer Vartanian were replaced by Frank Salvaggio and Robert Urbani respectively, beginning a new, heavier direction for the band.
At that time, the Canadian music scene had not embraced the Nu metal, so Salvaggio and Urbani decided to make a six-day trip by Greyhound bus from Montreal to Los Angeles, the center of Nu netal, to begin the process of making in-roads, contacts and securing showcases for the band. After a year filled with showcases the band secured a record deal through Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s Divine Recordings which released their full length album, Inches from the Mainline, in 2000.
The band also toured Ozzfest in 2000, and made an appearance on the SnoCore Tour. The album sold approximately 70,000 copies in the US.
After Divine Recordings lost their distribution deal with EMI’s Priority Records, the band was left without a label and returned to Montreal. Salvaggio once again returned to Los Angeles with the goal of securing another record deal. With the help of producers Jason Slater and Troy Van Leeuwen, a contract was signed with Bieler Bros. Records. Their second major album, Metafour, was released in 2003.
In March 2004, Rockman, the vocalist, left the band, prompting Slaves on Dope to disband. Salvaggio and Urbani are now part of the band Anew Revolution, with the ex-Unloco vocalist Joey Duenas. Jardine has become a producer in Montreal (Uplift Recording Studio), as well as forming his own band called The Monarchy (Disbanded).
In 2006, the band’s independent release One Good Turn Deserves Another was re-issued through Just A Minute Records. In 2009, Rockman and Jardine reformed Slaves on Dope and are now[when?] recording their third studio album. In a recent[when?] webisode, the band announced the name of the album to be Over the Influence. It was announced on webisode 18 that the recording had finished with 17 tracks. Rockman then[when?] said in a video on the band’s Facebook page that the album would be released in spring 2011.
In October 2011, it was announced that Slaves on Dope had signed to THC:Music/Rocket Science Ventures, the new label of the Corporate Punishment Records President, and early Slaves on Dope manager Thom Hazaert, who would release Over the Influence worldwide in spring 2012. They also announced the release of a digital-only EP, Careless Coma, in November 2011.
Slaves On Dope are currently writing their fifth full-length, due in 2015. slaves666 Kevin from Slaves On Dope • 3 yr. ago. I found that image for the cover of Klepto and found it fit perfectly with our band. We never had the intention of wearing them live, but when Steve Richards (RIP) who signed and managed Slipknot tried to sign us, he wanted us to wear them and tour together.
The year prior, Slaves on Dope independently issued the demo Klepto and the hype surrounding it led to gigs and support from bands such as Papa Roach and System of a Down.
