places to visit in jodhpur

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan (albeit pleasingly unspoiled by haphazard development), has a fascinating past. Located on the edge of the Thar desert, about 155 miles from the border with Pakistan, Jodhpur is, in fact, where the eponymous pants got their name from! These unusual pants were designed by the Maharaja of Jodhpur's son, Pratap Singh, and worn by his polo team when visiting the Queen of England in 1897. It is famous for its blue buildings, initially painted to signify that they were occupied by Brahmins, the highest caste in India.

This list of top Jodhpur attractions and places to visit will give you a diverse city experience. Jodhpur Heritage Walk conducts an immersive three- to four-hour guided tour through the city. If you have a spare day or two, visit nearby Bishnoi village or Osian, where you can see carved temples and go on a less-touristy camel safari.

Explore Mehrangarh Fort

Imposing Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the "Blue City," is one of the largest and most famous forts . As impressive as it is, as a well-preserved heritage structure, there's so much more to discover inside. The fort has been privately restored, and its museum has an outstanding display of royal memorabilia, including about 15,000 items from Maharaja Gaj Singh II's collection. It also has the only professional museum shop in India. The cultural performances that happen daily at various places inside the fort, as part of the particular focus on folk art and music, are another highlight. Plan your visit with this complete guide to Mehrangarh Fort .

Want a romantic evening dinner? The Chokelao Mahal Terrace restaurant serves traditional Rajasthani cuisine, which sparkles below. The Fort is also an evocative setting for music festivals. Don't miss the annual Rajasthan International Folk Festival in October and World Sufi Spirit Festival in February .

Ride the Jodhpur Flying Fox

Adventure lovers can't pass up the unique opportunity to zip-line with Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop. The circuit has six zip lines and takes around 90 minutes to complete. Groups of up to 12 people depart at appointed times. It's located on the north side of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Relax at Jaswant Thada

In honor of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, this intricately crafted cenotaph (empty commemorative tomb) was built in 1899. It features white marble lattice screens and whimsical domes, while the inside is adorned with portraits of Rathore rulers. It's a peaceful place to relax and enjoy stunning views of the Fort and city. Many a tired tourist sprawls on the front lawn to recuperate after sightseeing.

Wander Through Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was developed in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of a large rocky wasteland area next to the Fort. Neglected for many years, the park was overrun by an invasive thorny shrub. After the bush was eradicated, more than 80 native species of rock-loving plants from the Thar desert were grown there. The Park extends 70 hectares (around 200 acres) of rehabilitated land and has a walking trail. It's interesting to explore at different times of the year, as its foliage changes with the seasons.

Check Out the Clock Tower and Old City Markets

A trip to Jodhpur wouldn't be complete without visiting the bustling Old City. Many people choose to stay in this area, too, as some of the best budget hotels in Jodhpur are located there and have fabulous Fort views. The Old City's famous landmark, the clock tower, stands at the heart of it—and it's still working! Next to it, Sadar Market retains a traditional village bazaar feel. It's chaotic and colorful and sells almost everything, including handicrafts, spices, saris, and fabric. If you feel uncomfortable in crowds, you might prefer to take a walking tour rather than explore the market area yourself, as the congestion can be overwhelming. These walking tours offered by Jodhpur Magic and Virasat Experiences are two recommended options.

Dine Overlooking the Step Well

Travel and Still life photography/Getty Images

An exciting Urban Regeneration Project is being undertaken to transform the Old City into its former glory, but with a vibrant and hip spin. As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the new heritage boutique RAAS hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. The area has been turned into a contemporary square with cool cafes and shops, including a Good Earth home decor store and a branch of Jaipur-based Gem Palace. A secret door at the RAAS hotel will take you directly to Step Well Square. Step Well Cafe has the same owners as RAAS and provides the best view over the stepwell. It serves Continental and Indian cuisine, plus alcohol. However, its menu is quite limited.

Stroll Along the Streets of the Blue City

Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Don't miss spending some time leisurely strolling along its streets. It's also possible to go on a guided walking tour of the area to learn more about it. You can even stay amid the blue houses: Some of the top options in the area are  Singhvi's Haveli ,  Jewel Palace Haveli , Rani Mahal, and Jaswant Bhawan Homestay .

Tour the Area Around Gulab Sagar

Tim Makins/Getty Images

About 10 minutes walk north of Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell is Gulab Sagar. This 18th-century lake played an essential role in Jodhpur's traditional water management system. Not only does it provide a superb spot for photographing Mehrangarh Fort in the background, but there are also many interesting step wells and temples hidden in the lanes around it. They include Mahila Bagh Ka Jhalra step well and Kunjabihari Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. You can discover them on this Step Wells and Temples walking tour .

Marvel at Umaid Bhawan Palace

Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. Most of the remainder has been converted into a luxurious palace hotel, and unfortunately, it's off-limits to anyone who's not staying there. If you can't afford $600 or more per night for a room, you can still get a glimpse inside the palace by having a pricey dinner at one of its restaurants or visiting the museum. The museum mainly displays old photos of the Maharaja and his family. There's a vintage watch and car collection as well. If you're into that kind of thing, it's worthwhile going there. Otherwise, you may be disappointed as you'll get to see very little of the palace.

Take a Cooking Class at Spice Paradise

Spice Paradise is a spice shop run by a kindhearted husband and wife team (their unique masala chai blend has been refined and perfected over the years and is highly recommended). In their humble kitchen, they also conduct Indian cooking classes, which are hugely popular with foreigners. Along with delicious recipes, you'll get to meet a lovely family and gain priceless insight into Indian culture. If you don't have much time in Jodhpur, do book in advance as classes are often full.

Sample Some Indian Sweets

If you love not just Indian sweets but all kinds of Indian snacks, you'll want to visit the iconic Janta Sweet Home , renowned for making some of the best treats in Jodhpur. They're fresh and delicious, and the range is vast. Try the Mawa Kachori, a prestigious dish that originated from Jodhpur.

Shop at Sambhali Boutique

Sambhali Boutique is the perfect place to pick up some high-quality Jodhpur handicrafts and clothing in Indian and Western styles. All products are made by underprivileged women taught and employed by the Sambhali Trust. Items include silk and cotton camels and elephants, block-printed scarves and curtains, and shoulder bags. Custom orders can also be placed.

If you're looking for cheap accommodations, the Sambhali Trust operates from a very charming little guesthouse (the Durag Niwas Guest House ) that's a hit with backpackers. Long-term stays with all meals provided are possible.

Visit Mandore and Mandore Gardens

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded, but now it's in a neglected state. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! But be careful that they don't snatch your food!

Getting Around Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a small city that can be covered via foot. Almost all of the popular sightseeing places in Jodhpur such as the old city, Mehrangarh fort, Jaswant Thada, clock tower, toorji ka jhalra, etc are located in close proximity to one another. Nonetheless, in order to visit places like Umaid Bhavan palace as mandore gardens, you will need to hire a tuk-tuk for half a day. Moreover, there is uber and ola available in Jodhpur so there are various options available for getting around Jodhpur city.

Where to Stay in Jodhpur

When it comes to finding hotels in Jodhpur, I recommend staying close to the old city of Jodhpur which is in close proximity to the Mehrangarh fort. This way you will be close to the majority of sightseeing spots and you’ll get a majestic view of the Mehrangarh fort.

Zostel Jodhpur

Zostel Jodhpur view of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur Rajasthan

The view from the rooftop of Zostel Jodhpur

Zostel Jodhpur is a backpacker hostel that has dorms as well as private rooms. While there are so many wonderful things I can say about my stay here at Zostel Jodhpur, the best part was the prime location. Located right next to the toorji ka jhalra stepwell, Zostel Jodhpur overlooks the towering Mehrangarh Fort which is a mere 10-minute walk from the hostel. Moreover, the blue houses, Jaswant Thada, and the sunrise viewpoint are also all a 10-15 minute walk from the hostel.

Hotels in Jodhpur

In case you are looking for a hotel in Jodhpur, and not a hostel, in Jodhpur city, consider finding a hotel close to the Mehrangarh fort area. This will allow you to easily access all the places to visit in Jodhpur without having to take a tuk-tuk or cab. Also, try to prefer a hotel that comes with a rooftop overlooking the Mehrangarh fort because that's a view you're not going to want to miss. Believe me.

Jodhpur Itinerary - Best Places to Visit in Jodhpur in 2 Days

Day 1 of jodhpur itinerary for 2 days.

You will begin your Jodhpur trip by watching an epic sunrise over the blue city, exploring the blue houses, visiting palaces, and alluring gardens.

1. Pachetia Hill Sunrise Spot

Start day 1 of your two days in Jodhpur by waking up early for sunrise at the pachetia hill. This hill is commonly known as the Jodhpur sunrise spot for witnessing a panoramic view of the blue city. In order to reach here, you will have to walk through the blue houses of Jodhpur then take the stairs that go up to the hill. Try to reach here just a little before sunrise so that you can experience a magical sunrise over the blue city Jodhpur.

Open 24 hours

2. Blue City

Jodhpur blue houses in 2 day Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Even though Jodhpur is called the blue city, finding blue houses isn't an easy task. There is a specific area inside Jodhpur which is called “old city” or “blue city” where you will find the houses. The area is a 10-minute walk from the clock tower. Just ask any local for directions and they’ll be able to guide you. Moreover, if you’re going to pachetia hill, you will pass through the narrow lanes of the blue city to get there. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

3. Toorji ka Jhalra

Toorji ka Jhalra in Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Toorji ka jhalra is an ancient stepwell located in Jodhpur. It is actually a popular sightseeing as well as a hangout spot for locals and youngsters. Due to this reason, I recommend visiting the stepwell in the early hours of the morning before it gets too crowded with tourists and locals. Keep in mind that the stairs of the stepwell can be slippery so walk around carefully and try to stay in the upper section where there isn’t any moss or algae.

Open: 24 hours

4. Umaid Bhawan Palace

Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Umaid bawan palace is a famous place that has now been turned into a luxury hotel. Popularly recognized as the place where Indian actress Priyanka Chopra married the American sweetheart Nick Jonas, the palace is an opulent structure that is open to visitors. Tourists can pay a small fee to view the luxury car collection here and also to take a tour of a small section of the palace which is kept open to visitors. I was slightly disappointed that visitors could only access a couple of rooms that only had a few paintings and relics. If you’re short on time, I would advise skipping this palace out of all the other places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days. Do note that there is ample free parking available here.

Open: Mon-Sun 9 am to 5 pm

Entrance fee: INR 30 for Indians, INR 100 for foreigners, INR 10 for kids aged 5-11 years

5. Mandore Gardens

Mandore Gardens in Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Mandore is a collection of beautifully landscaped gardens, temples, and historical structures located not very far from the Umaid Bhawan Palace, and 9 km from Jodhpur city. The Mandore gardens are the perfect place to walk around and take pictures during sunset on day one of your two day Jodhpur itinerary for sightseeing.

Open Mon-Sun 8 am to 8 pm

Entrance fee: None for the garden; INR 50 for museum

6. Rooftop Dinner for Night View of Mehrangarh Fort

Night view of Mehrangrah fort from Zostel rooftop, Jodhpur Rajasthan

End your first day of sightseeing in Jodhpur by having dinner at a rooftop cafe or restaurant overlooking the majestic Mehrangarh fort. The fort is lit up between sunset till 9.30 pm in the night. Try to get a nice comfy seat at a restaurant before that, in order to enjoy your dinner with a breathtaking view. Since I stayed at Zostel Jodhpur, which had a two-level rooftop cafe with the most amazing view of the Mehrangarh Fort, I dined there itself in the night.

DAY 2 OF JODHPUR ITINERARY FOR 2 DAYS

On your second day in Jodhpur blue city, you will explore the grand Mehrangarh Fort, the clock tower area, indulge in some shopping and discover the secret sunset viewpoint.

1. Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Start the second day of your Jodhpur tour by visiting the striking Mehrangarh fort as soon as it opens in the morning. This iconic fort, which was built by Rao Jodha in 1438, defines the landscape of Jodhpur city. For this reason, spare at least 2 hours to walk around and explore all the sections of the fort. The best part about visiting the fort, though, is the entrance of the fort where local folk singers and music players sit there and perform. It’s a heartwarming start to the tour of the Mehrangarh fort. Inside the fort, you will get to see the way the royals used to live their life in opulence and wealth. Do not miss climbing up to the beautiful sheesh mahal (mirror room) and other grand sections of the palace. Visitors can also dine at and shop inside the fort.

Open: Mon-Sun 9 am to 5 pm

2. Jaswant Thada

Jaswant thada in Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Jaswant Thada is just a short walk from the Mehrangarh fort. This cenotaph or mausoleum, built by Maharaja Sardar Singh in 1899 in memory of his father, is also termed as the Taj Mahal of Mewar due to the white marble that was used for constructing the structure. Just like the Mehrangarh fort, there is a local artist who sits and performs at the entrance of Jaswant Thada. While you’re visiting this place during your 2 day Jodhpur itinerary, don’t forget to look back and notice the impressive view of the Mehrangarh fort against the city of Jodhpur.

Open: Mon-Sun 9 am to 6 pm

3. Statue of Rao Jodha

Statue of Rao Jodha in Jodhpur itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

Rao Jodha, also known as Jodha of Mandore, was a Rajput ruler of Mandore. He founded the blue city of Jodhpur in 1459 and named it after himself. The statue of Rao Jodha is situated close to the Jaswant Thada as well as the Mehrangarh fort. It looks particularly beautiful on a full moon night, lit up against the dark sky.

4. Clock Tower

Clock tower Jodhpur Rajasthan in Jodhpur Itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

The clock tower of Jodhpur is an iconic structure that is at the confluence of the new and old city. While you can go up the clock tower, what’s more exciting is the massive line-up of shops selling traditional clothing, jewelry, and curios along with the many little restaurants and street food stalls serving popular local food, snacks, and desserts. This area is always lively and the perfect place to indulge in some food binging as well as shopping sessions.

5. Jodhpur's Famous Omelet Stall

Jodhpur famous omlette stall in 2 day Jodhpur itinerary for Jodhpur blue city Rajasthan India

This may sound weird but there is a special famous stall in Jodhpur that sells the most delicious omelets. It is said that this little stall used to make a variety of dishes until Lonely Planet magazine featured their place in one of their guides for selling the world's best omelets. Since then, the demand for omelets grew to such an extent that this is the only dish that they prepare here. They have a wide variety of options to choose from. Each omelet comes with 4 pieces of bread, and two sets of omelets inside them. I particularly loved the Spanish masala cheese omelet.

6. Shopping in Jodhpur

Shopping in Jodhpur blue city

As mentioned earlier, the area surrounding the clock tower is the perfect place to indulge in shopping sessions and to find souvenirs to bring back to your friends and family. Here you’ll find traditional clothing items such as gota patti dupattas, bandhani skirts and sarees, jewelry, home decor pieces, and little curios ranging from fridge magnets to badges and stickers. There are countless shops to choose from.

7. Sunset Viewpoint

Jodhpur sunset viewpoint in Jodhpur Itinerary - best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

While this is a slightly controversial place, it would be unfair to exclude it from my Jodhpur itinerary for 2 days. This hilltop is located behind the Mehrangarh fort and is truly the best place to witness the sunset in Jodhpur. Now, when I visited this Jodhpur sunset spot, there were quite a few tourists and locals here. However, some people told me that on another day, the cops came here and asked people to vacate the area which is closed to visitors. It’s best to verify this information with your hotel or hostel before visiting.

Food to Try in Jodhpur

Rajasthan local food - Daal baati churma

Ah, the food! When in Rajasthan, you cannot miss trying the famous local delicacy daal baati churma. I also tried pyaaz ki kachori , samosa and a dessert called rabdi in Jodhpur.

Where to Eat in Jodhpur Rajasthan

There are way too many restaurants in Jodhpur to try local dishes there. Bhawani is famous for its Rajasthani food. There is also a famous omelet stall near the clock tower, which was featured in a lonely planet guide. Just ask any local to point you in the direction of the stall. Shahi samosa is a little restaurant also near the clock tower that serves the best kachori and samosa that I’ve ever tasted.
