Most contracts last 6-8 weeks, though some travel jobs may be longer. Many contracts are renewed if the traveler and the hospital are in agreement. Some travel nurses extend multiple times, when the job is a perfect fit!

Do you provide insurance?

How long is the application process?

With TravelNurse your accommodations and travel are always pre-planned and pre-paid!

Accommodation arrangements vary from one assignment to the next. Shared accommodations are available close to each assignment facility, often within walking distance. Single accommodations and family friendly, pet friendly assignments are available at some assignment locations. In some cases you may also make your own arrangements for accommodations and travel and be reimbursed. Staying with friends or family or arranging a favorite hotel or B&B is always possible. We supplied furnished housing within walking distance to the healthcare facility whenever possible, smoke free environments with bedding, linens, towels and in most cases TV and Wifi services.

Whether you are flying or driving to your assignment, we are able to assist you along the way. All flights and travel are pre-planned. With in-house travel coordinators your itemized itinerary will be sent to you within 7 days of your assignment start date. If you are driving to your assignment, our travel department can assist you in choosing the best routes, booking interim travel and checking in with you along your way.

Become a Canadian Nurse Working in the USA

International travel nursing can be intimidating. That’s why we walk you through each step of the process.

What’s the timeline for travel nursing from Canada? The short answer is around six months (with Aya). That’s around half the time it would take you to do it on your own or go through other Canadian travel nursing agencies. Our experts walk you through the process and review your paperwork for errors before you submit. We get you there faster by removing the barriers that slow your application.

As a Canadian nurse moving to the USA, here’s what you’ll need:

VisaScreen certification through CGFNS

CGFNS evaluates your education/credentials and verifies that you can work in the US by granting the VisaScreen certification. If you qualify for our licensure project (see right) we'll reimburse your $540 application fee once you start working. And more good news ... we can take care of the following requirements simultaneously. Again, the ENTIRE process should only take six months.

US State License

You’ve applied for VisaScreen certification. Great job! Now you need a US state license (we’ll pay for this too if you qualify). This can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to be issued. Again, we can work on your license while you’re waiting for your VisaScreen certification.

Book a travel nursing job!

Now, you’re ready to go. Because you’re smart, you’re working with an experienced Canadian travel nursing agency. As we say in the US, “this isn’t our first rodeo.” We have deep relationships with facilities across the country. We know which healthcare facilities will book you with some of the paperwork pending.

Border crossing documentation

Congrats! You got a job and it’s time to join your fellow Canadian travel nurses in the USA! We’ll walk you through what you need to bring. Gather that documentation and cross the border within 10 days of your contract start date. Request TN Status (AKA the TN Visa for Canadian nurses) at the border. Again, we’ll help with this!

Apply for a US Social Security Number

Once you’re in the US, it’s time to apply for your social security number. This number allows you to work in any state. You should get your social security card in the mail in 4-8 weeks. This won’t affect your timeline. You can work at certain facilities while waiting for your social security card.

(Offices are currently closed due to COVID-19. This doesn't affect your ability to work.)

Head of New Brunswick health network defends big spending on travel nurse contracts

The head of New Brunswick’s francophone Vitalite Health Network launched a spirited defence today of the organization’s spending on travel nurse contracts.

Dr. France Desrosiers told a legislature committee that the decision to contract private firms to provide temporary nurses was a matter of “saving human lives by maintaining essential services.”

The province’s auditor general singled out the spending in a June 4 report, finding that between Jan. 1, 2022, and Feb. 29, 2024, Vitalite paid more than $123-million for travel nurses – including $98-million to Ontario-based agency Canadian Health Labs.

The prices charged by Canadian Health Labs under its contract with Vitalite, which continues until February 2026, were described as exorbitant by Health Minister Bruce Fitch.

Desrosiers says the network had little choice but to sign with Canadian Health Labs because the firm had a “monopoly” on bilingual staff.

Auditor general Paul Martin also said the network refused to give his office access to three internal audits, which Vitalite defended by saying those documents were shielded by a non-disclosure agreement.

Coming out of the pandemic, Canada’s health care system found many new challenges and many new nurses in hospital wards. This created a need for learning opportunities that The Michener Centre for Post-Graduate Nursing Education (Michener CNE) has stepped up to provide.

“With a more novice workforce, we see the impact of those seasoned nurses who had a lot of expertise and who have now retired from the field,” says Pam Hubley, Vice-President of Health Disciplines and Chief Nursing Executive at University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto.

“We need to invest in nurses to enable them to access the education that will help them develop the knowledge and skills to deliver high quality care,” says Hubley.

In response to the increased need for experienced practitioners, the Michener CNE was launched through Continuing Education at Michener to provide crucial continuous learning opportunities for nursing professionals.

Through a range of highly sought-after certificate and boot camp programs, Michener CNE helps nurses enhance their knowledge and specialized skills to prepare them to meet the challenges of today’s health system.

Former PC minister questions travel-nurse exemption granted by colleague

Mla ross wetmore says small social development contract 'ballooned' into $173m expense.

For the second straight day, a former Progressive Conservative cabinet minister has strongly criticized the PC government's handling of costly travel-nurse contracts.

Gagetown-Petitcodiac MLA Ross Wetmore suggested that Service New Brunswick Minister Mary Wilson should have taken a closer look in 2022 before signing an emergency exemption that allowed contracts to be awarded without a competitive bidding process.

"When funding came across my desk, I asked questions," Wetmore, a former minister of agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries, told reporters.

"If something was a million dollars and they asked for a minister's exemption, I'd be asking questions."

The exemptions were approved by the deputy minister of social development, using a regulation that allows departments to bypass normal procurement rules in an emergency.

But because the deals were worth more than $1 million, the exemptions required the approval of the minister of Service New Brunswick, which oversees contracting, before the contracts could be signed.

Former PC minister questions lack of legal advice on travel nurses

Wetmore said, during a meeting of the legislature's public accounts committee, that the two seemingly small contracts set the stage for the $173 million that taxpayers have now forked over for travel nurses — with more costs still to come.

"The door got opened with Social Development," Wetmore told the department's deputy minister, Jim Mehan, saying a $2.7 million agreement with Canadian Health Labs Inc. had "ballooned" and "snowballed" into the much larger sum.

"I'm sorry I'm picking on you," he told Mehan, "but … this is where it started."

Service New Brunswick did not acknowledge a request for an interview with Wilson about the exemption she approved, but spokesperson Jennifer Vienneau said in a written statement that "SNB only approves the exemption to the procurement process, not the contract."

She said Wilson's approval in 2022 followed regulations under the Procurement Act and was granted "in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic at that time."

A 'failure in process'

The travel-nurse contracts have become a major political headache for the Higgs government in the wake of a scathing report by Auditor General Paul Martin.

On Tuesday, former health minister Dorothy Shephard called the contracts — one of which is still in force and can be renewed automatically — a "failure in process."

Social Development signed the first two agreements in early 2022 with two companies that provided nurses and other staff to fill severe staffing shortages in long-term care homes, caused in part by COVID-19 outbreaks.

"Obviously we exhausted as many possible options as we could prior to that," Mehan told the committee.

He said based on "quick research," the department identified four potential travel-nurse suppliers, and Canadian Health Labs and another agency, Plan A, were "the only two at the time that could provide resources immediately. … We did what we had to do."

The result, he said, was that the department signed contracts drafted by the companies themselves. 

"These contracts did not favour GNB," he said.

He confirmed that he signed one of the contracts when he was acting deputy minister and the other was signed by Elizabeth Dubee, then the assistant deputy minister for seniors and long-term care. 

She had experience negotiating contracts and signed the Canadian Health Labs agreement without the benefit of legal advice, Mehan said — a fact that Wetmore said he found disturbing as a former cabinet minister from 2018 to 2020.

As a minister, he was not allowed to sign a contract worth more than $500,000 without additional layers of scrutiny, he told Mehan.

"I understand the sense of urgency, but I don't think we can use that as a legitimate reason or excuse. 

"Never once have I been able to go in, tell them 'this is what it is, take it or leave it,' and gotten a contract." 

Should have negotiated 'harder'

According to Martin's audit, Canadian Health Labs forced the province to agree to a bundled team of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and personal support workers at $9,995 per day for "up to" eight hours of work — even if they weren't all needed.

"I cannot understand the province of New Brunswick agreeing to CHL — I don't care how hard up we are — to take a bundle when we don't need everybody," Wetmore said.

As a cabinet minister and a business owner, he later told reporters, "never once have I ever gone in … and said, 'Listen, you don't want widgets, but you're going to get widgets whether you want them or not.'"

The veteran MLA, who is retiring this year after 14 years in the legislature, said he believes if the province had "negotiated a lot harder," it might have obtained better terms from the company.

Social Development's agreements ended in 2022, but the Vitalité health authority is still under contract with the company until 2026.

Vitalité's three contracts with Canadian Health Labs have cost a total of $98 million, Martin's audit revealed.

"What the [Social Development] department has done is opened up the door," Wetmore said.

"This has ballooned from when you folks started … and it hasn't stopped yet."

Officials from Vitalité are scheduled to take questions from the committee starting at 9 a.m. Thursday.
