PDC Darts: All the dates as Pro Tour, European Tour and Premier League return

Watch the World Matchplay on Sky Sports; coverage gets underway on Saturday, July 18

Comment & Analysis @paulprenders

Wednesday 1 July 2020 17:57, UK

Michael van Gerwen

Darts behind closed doors, players marking matches, and the hope of bringing crowds back to watch the biggest names in the PDC - with competitive darts poised to return, we take a look at the state of play.

After an epic six weeks of darting from home with the innovative PDC Home Tour, and a host of online tournaments, a five-day Summer Series will be followed by the World Matchplay - the year's second-biggest tournament - and, as things stand the Premier League, all by the end of July.

Questions still surround the Matchplay, with a decision on where and how the event might look expected by the end of the week.

The PDC are considering two options: a behind-closed-doors tournament at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena - which remains the most likely - but also a scenario that would see the event in its regular home, Blackpool's Winter Gardens.

PDC Calendar - July schedule

In preparation for that event, and following the suspension of all Pro Tour and European Tour action after Premier League Night Six in Liverpool in March, the Summer Series will kick off the sport's return to action for what looks set to be a busy second half of the year.

Summer Series

Nathan Aspinall beats MVG in Cardiff

With the sport halted, so has the Order of Merit - meaning qualification for the premier ranking events has been impossible. To reignite the competitive edge, and give as many of the Tour Card holders as possible the chance to return to play, the PDC announced the Summer Series in June.

Summer Series to signal darts return

With the announcement that prize money - which would have lapsed between March 16 and July 8 - has been removed, the field for the Matchplay will be confirmed at the conclusion of the Summer Series.

The five days of competition will take place behind closed doors and will involve losing players calling the next match on their allocated board. The two 'live' streaming boards will have a referee for their match.

Each day will have standard Players Championship prize money of £75,000, and all prize money counts towards the re-calibrated Order of Merit

Additionally, a place at November's Grand Slam of Darts is up for grabs for the player who tops the five-day Order of Merit for prize money accumulated and has not already qualified for the tournament later this year.

Five days of Players Championship events will get underway in Milton Keynes on Wednesday, July 8 through to Sunday, July 12, and the five days will represent the final qualification events for the World Matchplay.

World Matchplay

World Cup partners Rob Cross and Michael Smith contested this year's World Matchplay final

Blackpool's iconic Winter Gardens and the sunshine of summer is synonymous with the sport's second-biggest event, and the news that the tournament will go ahead on the scheduled dates was welcomed.

The draw will take place on July 12, and the quest for the Phil Taylor Trophy will then begin on July 18 and run through to a conclusion on July 26. Sky Sports will be there for every arrow thrown.

However, for the first time in its history, the prestigious event will not be held in Blackpool, but will go behind closed doors at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena.

Matchroom Sport have already seen successful hosting of the Championship League and the Tour Championship in snooker, and with an adjoining hotel, the Marshall Arena is set up to provide the most suitable alternative to the Winter Gardens.

The top-16 players from the Order of Merit will qualify automatically, and they will be joined by the top-16 players from a one-year Pro Tour Order of Merit.

Premier League

UNIBET PREMIER LEAGUE 2020.M&S BANK ARENA,.LIVERPOOL,.PIC;LAWRENCE LUSTIG.GLEN DURRANT V DARYL GURNEY.GLEN DURRANT IN ACTION.

As it stands, Birmingham on Thursday, July 30, will see the resumption of the Premier League, halted in Liverpool after Night Six.

The 17-night roadshow is perhaps the most difficult tournament to get up and running, with nights still scheduled for Northern Ireland, Holland, Germany, Scotland, and England.

With guidance differing from country to country, it remains to be seen whether it is possible to stick to the rescheduled plan that was released in June. That includes a double-header in Rotterdam, Judgement Night now at The O2, a trip to the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, and the Play-Offs scheduled for Sheffield in October.

Premier League Darts 2020 - Revised schedule

European tour.

Gerwyn Price

Behind the cancelled World Series, the burgeoning European Tour has perhaps been the hardest hit, with the calendar now reduced to just four additional events from an initial 13. Gerwyn Price was the Belgian Darts Champion, beating Michael Smith in February.

Four remaining events will now take place in Gibraltar, Germany, Czech Republic, and for the first time in PDC history, Hungary.

The 32-player European Championship remains in place, with the qualifying criteria an Order of Merit based on five events rather than 13. The event is due to take place in Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, from October 29 to November 1.

PDC European Tour

Rest of the year.

Peter Wright poses with the Sid Waddell William Hill World Darts Championship Trophy after victory in the Final of the 2020 William Hill World Darts Championship between Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace on December 31, 2019 in London, England

The caveat remains that all action is subject to change, as guidance to deal with the threat of Covid-19 changes, but the rest of the darting year is yet to be altered.

PDC chief executive Matt Porter told The Darts Show podcast that Players Championship events could be shoehorned into midweeks with players reliant on them for income, and once the Matchplay and Summer Series have played out, further announcements are likely.

The field for the Nordic Darts Masters, the sole remaining event of the World Series, will be made up of eight PDC players and eight local players, while the World Cup will now take place over three days in Graz in November rather than four in Hamburg.

PDC Calender: August-December

An announcement on the field for the World Series Finals is expected in the coming weeks while the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship Finals remain as scheduled and with qualifying criteria likely to mirror that of the Matchplay.

Finally, the World Championship, scheduled for December at Alexandra Palace, remains untouched - the hope being that by then, crowds may be allowed for sporting events and fans will be allowed to gather at the year's biggest Christmas party.

Darts returns to Sky Sports in July, with nine days of coverage from the World Matchplay getting underway on Saturday, July 18, and every day until the final on Sunday, July 26.

European Tour Kalender für 2025 veröffentlicht

Mittwoch, 28.

The Challenge and Development Tours will each return to unified tours of events featuring players from across the globe having been split into regions in 2021.

Following the conclusion of the 2021/22 World Darts Championship, focus moves to Qualifying Schools, which will be held in the UK and Germany from January 9-15, with two stages of play taking place at each venue.

Full entry details for Qualifying Schools will be published in due course.

The Premier League campaign will begin in Cardiff on February 3 and reach its climax with the Play-Offs in Newcastle on May 26.

The UK Open will return to Butlin’s Minehead Resort, with the popular annual festival of darts set to take place from March 4-6.

Amsterdam will once again play host to the World Series of Darts Finals from September 16-18, before the World Grand Prix returns to the Citywest Convention Centre, Dublin from October 2-8.

The top 32 players on the European Tour Order of Merit will travel to Dortmund for the European Championship from October 27-30.

Details of the final two months of the calendar, along with 2022 World Series of Darts event information, will be published in due course.

“It is with great excitement that we announce such a full 2022 PDC following the difficulties of the last two years,” said PDC Chief Executive Matthew Porter.

“In particular, it will be fantastic to see the popular European Tour return to full strength next year with a full 13 event campaign.

“We are also pleased to expand the Women’s Series, bringing it in line with our Challenge and Development Tours, as we continue to offer more opportunities to female players.”

Rob Cross ended his two-year wait for a PDC title in Salzburg on Sunday, defeating Michael van Gerwen in the final to win the Cazoo European Championship for a second time.

Cross claimed his fifth televised crown with an 11-8 victory over Van Gerwen in the final at the Salzburgarena, almost two years on from his last TV title win - which came in the same event.

Four-time European Champion Van Gerwen was on the charge for a fifth success in the event after picking up stunning victories over Gerwyn Price and Nathan Aspinall earlier in the day, but was let down by 27 missed double attempts in an edgy final.

Cross was on hand to take his chances and pocket the £120,000 winner's prize, which sees him move back up to 11th on the PDC Order of Merit, having faced the possibility of dropping out of the world's top 16 prior to the event.

"It's nice to win again after the last 18 months, which has probably been the hardest time of my life,"  revealed Cross, who also defeated Jose de Sousa and Joe Cullen on Finals Day.

"I have to dedicate this to my family, friends, management and sponsors who have stood by me and been incredibly supportive.

"I love playing in Austria, I've got a great record here. I love the people, I'd play here every week if I could.

"Granted, I didn't play my best tonight, and I'm thankful that Michael wasn't himself in the final. You have to take chances when they are presented to you."

The win also secures Cross' place in November's Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts, with the 31-year-old looking forward to a busy end to 2021.

Cross added: "I think this is going to be a turning point for me, with the confidence it's going to give me I know I'm going to get better over the next few months. I would love to win another World Championship."

Van Gerwen was seeking a first ranking title since November 2020 and a first European Championship success since 2017.

Despite coming up short in the final, the Dutchman showed signs of a return to his best with averages of 107.74 against Price in the quarter-finals and 103.41 against Aspinall in the semi-finals.

"When you play like I did in the final then you deserve to lose," Van Gerwen declared in an honest assessment.

"You can find a million excuses but I have to say I didn't show up in the final, it wasn't good enough and I can only blame myself.

"I am starting to perform a little bit better - except for the final - but I don't like picking up runner-up trophies. It doesn't count for anything, I'm a winner."

A repeat of the 2017 European Championship final saw Cross land the first break of throw with a 123 finish on the bull to move 3-2 up, only for Van Gerwen to land a 138 checkout to hit straight back.

Cross opened up daylight for first time at 5-3, and led 6-4 at the second interval before a 13-dart break of throw saw him move 7-4 in front.

The next two legs also went the way of Cross, before Van Gerwen sparked into life, winning the next three legs to move within touching distance of glory at 9-7.

But after the Dutchman missed five darts at doubles to move within a leg, Cross found double four to break throw and move to the brink of the title.

After Cross missed a match dart at tops for a 107 checkout, Van Gerwen found the same target to break, but his hopes were short-lived as Cross closed out victory in the next leg by checking out 81 in two darts.

Sunday saw the tournament reach its conclusion with the quarter-finals in the afternoon session, before the semi-finals and final in the evening.

Aspinall won through to his first European Championship semi-final after winning a thrilling sudden-death leg against Danny Noppert, and pushed Van Gerwen all the way in the last four after clawing back a 7-1 deficit.

"I played probably the best I've played in a tournament for two or three years," he said. "It's nice to get to the latter stages and I threw everything at Michael.

"You can't give one of the best players in the world a 7-1 head start, but I dug deep and I'm proud of myself to take it to the last leg. He had a fantastic last leg but I can take a lot of positives from this weekend."

Cullen, meanwhile, defeated Austrian crowd favourite Mensur Suljovic 10-7 to reach his second European Championship semi-final in an encouraging run.

"Considering the circumstances, I'd have snapped your hand off to reach the semi-finals but there's a lot of disappointment there," admitted Cullen, who went down 11-3 in the last four after Cross won the opening nine legs without reply.

"I played nowhere near my best in the semi-final. Rob punished me and he was the rightful victor. It's frustrating because I played steady all weekend and did the right things at the right times but got ironed out in the end."

Updated European Tour Order of Merit after five tournaments

Michael van Gerwen has extended his huge lead on the PDC European Tour Order of Merit with his third Euro Tour title of the season.

Van Gerwen won the title at the European Darts Open in Leverkusen on Sunday night by beating Dimitri van den Bergh 8-5 in the final.

After five Euro Tour tournaments, he has 84,500 pounds in prize money. That is more than Luke Humphries (31,500 pounds), Gerwyn Price (28,000 pounds) and Jonny Clayton (22,500 pounds) combined.

Van den Bergh after reaching the final is up to fifth, while Dirk van Duijvenbode is up to sixth on £19,000 after another good run.

Van Gerwen seals fifth European Darts Open title, third European Tour of 2022 with Van den Bergh final win

Later this month Euro Tour tournaments will be held in Prague (13-15 May), Stuttgart (20-22 May) and Zwolle (27-29 May) respectively.

At the end of the season the 32 best players of the final ranking will participate in the European Championship in Dortmund. This tournament is scheduled from 27 to 30 October.
